The Yellowstone universe continues with a star-studded cast in the modern day spinoff, The Madison. We have all the details!

Taylor Sheridan has built a television empire with his Yellowstone universe. Now, he’s adding to it with a modern-day spinoff, The Madison.

Sheridan already blessed us with two Yellowstone prequels to satisfy our Western-series cravings: 1883 and 1923.

With the future of the original series Yellowstone up in the air because of Kevin Costner’s departure, The Madison will be able to keep the Yellowstone universe going even without John Dutton, sadly.

It would have been cool to see Kevin Costner pop up in The Madison, but it’s not to be. But anything is possible in Hollywood these days, so you never know.

But The Madison will be anything but lacking in star power. Here’s what we know so far!

An Ominous Threat - Yellowstone
(Emerson Miller / Paramount)

What is The Madison About?

The Madison is set in the modern day. It follows the story of the Clyburn family who uproots from New York City to Montana after suffering a horrific tragedy.

Paramount describes the series as “a heartfelt study of grief and human connection following a New York City family in the Madison River valley of central Montana.”

The series was originally called 2024 before the title changed to The Madison.

Who is Behind The Madison?

Of course, the guiding force behind The Madison is Taylor Sheridan, the genius behind the Yellowstone universe.

Sheridan is also behind the utterly enjoyable Tulsa King as well as Mayor of Kingstown, Special Ops: Lioness, and the upcoming Landman, all on Paramount+.

Aside from Sheridan, other executive producers named on The Madison include series star Michelle Pfeiffer, David C. Glasser, John Linson, Art Linson, Ron Burkle, Bob Yari, David Hutkin, Christina Voros, Michael Friedman, and Keith Cox.

It’s being produced by MTV Entertainment Studios, 101 Studios, and Bosque Ranch Productions.

How Does The Madison Fit Into the Yellowstone Universe?

The Madison is set in the present day. It’s not clear yet if any of the Duttons will appear in the series, so right now, we can consider it a standalone spinoff.

Yellowstone has used scenes from characters from the Yellowstone prequel and Dutton origin story, 1883, but it’s unclear if any of that will happen with The Madison.

Of course, that could change as production progresses.

Who Stars in The Madison?

The series already has plenty of big names joining the cast, and although details are slim, we do have some goodies to share.

The iconic Michelle Pfeiffer will star as Stacy Clyburn, whose story the show centers around.

Although not too many details have been released about Stacy, what we do know is that she has a tragic story.

After her husband and brother-in-law are killed in a plane crash, she leaves New York City for Montana.

We won’t rehash Pfeiffer’s massive list of movie credits, but the last time she appeared on TV was in the 2022 Showtime drama series, The First Lady.

Matthew Fox is the most recent addition to the cast of The Madison. He plays Paul, a self-reliant bachelor who loves the outdoors.

The actor is most known for his roles in Party of Five and Lost.

Fox has been relatively quiet on the television front, so it’ll be nice to see him back on the American small screen. He most recently starred in the 2023 Australian television comedy series C*A*U*G*H*T.

Patrick J. Adams will play Russell McIntosh, Paige’s husband. Russell is a young investment banker who has followed the life path set before him from the start.

(Photo by Mat Hayward/Getty Images for iHeartRadio)

Of course, Adams is best known for his role as Mike Adams on Suits. He most recently starred in the Canadian drama series Plan B.

Beau Garrett plays Abigail Reese, Stacy’s daughter. Abigail is a recently divorced mother of two who is a resilient and sardonic New Yorker.

Garrett has several TV credits to name, including a lead role in the 2021 Netflix series Firefly Lane with Kathryn Heigl and the 2014 Bravo series A Girlfriend’s Guide to Divorce.

She also appeared in The Good Doctor, The Rookie, and Longmire.

(Photo by Theo Wargo/Getty Images for AHA)

Elle Chapman will play Stacy’s other daughter, Paige McIntosh. Paige is a somewhat self-centered woman who indulges in a luxurious New York lifestyle provided by her parents and her husband, Russell.

This is Chapman’s first major role on American television. Previously, she starred in the Spanish series The Girl in the Mirror (original title, Alma), which is now airing on Netflix.

She also appeared in the 2022 film A Man Called Otto, starring Tom Hanks.

When Will The Madison Premiere?

No premiere date has yet been announced for The Madison. Cast members are still being added, so production has yet to begin.

However, filming is reportedly set to begin in late August 2024 in Montana, NYC, and Texas.

Where Can I Watch The Madison?

There are no official details on which network The Madison will air. But some reports state it will air on Paramount rather than Paramount+.

If it does premiere on Paramount, it would make sense to premiere the series in conjunction with Yellowstone Season 5b, but we’ll have to wait to see if that’s how things play out.

How Many Episodes Will The Madison Season 1 Have?

There is no word yet on how many The Madison episodes we’ll get to enjoy, but we expect there will be between 10 and 12 based on other shows in the Yellowstone Universe.

Is There a Trailer for The Madison Season 1?

Since the show has yet to begin filming, there isn’t a trailer yet. Boo!

But be sure to watch this space for updates on any new developments.

For a franchise as secure in viewers’ hearts as the Yellowstone universe and the Dutton family have become, you’d think it would be easier to understand the varying levels of spinoffs and prequels spinning around.

It’s not.

Even with insider subscriptions to well-connected minds, things get muddier by the day.

An Ominous Threat - Yellowstone
(Emerson Miller / Paramount)

Rumors have been swirling about Michelle Pfeiffer’s involvement with Sheridan for a while. About a week back, TV Line reported another offshoot titled Madison, starring Pfeiffer, Kurt Russell, and Patrick J Adams.

Today, Paramount officially revealed the title. So, let’s break things down and see what we know and how we know it. Whether we can make sense of it for longer than an hour is worth the experiment, right?

Couldn't Dream of a Better Death - Yellowstone Season 5 Episode 6
(Paramount Network)

The Yellowstone Flagship

Yellowstone

We all know this one! This is the grandbaby of them all, which is confusing since it spawned all of the others.

In the familial sense, it’s the granddaddy, but Beth Dutton and her brother Kacey and their adopted brother, Jamie, are very far down the line of other Dutton characters we’ve come to know.

Was Jamie ever truly adopted, or was he just raised as a Dutton? That’s about as clear as the Yellowstone universe lineage.

Yellowstone’s story hinged on everything the Duttons created after arriving in Montana in 1883.

Kayce Cutting - Yellowstone Season 4 Episode 7
(Paramount Network/Cam McLeod)

The crux of the series is that John Dutton was working hard to stave off anybody and everybody who wanted to claim or reclaim Dutton land, whether by old Native American laws or Federal or State laws, to be written or manipulated to do the job.

John was a respected father, but there was a significant lack of it between his children.

The Dutton relationships are not touchy-feely but anchored in generational pride and determination not to lose sight of promises made to the land and each other. They are over a century in the making.

It’s good, dramatic, soapy stuff that strums every string on our emotional guitars.

For reasons recounted elsewhere on this and other sites ad nauseam, Yellowstone will begin to grind to a halt this November.

While Sheridan often surprises with his scripts, we’re going in blind, so the final episodes will be a trip.

Yellowstone Prequels

1883 (Concluded)

Elsa Battles a Fever - 1883 Season 1 Episode 10
(Emerson Miller/Paramount+ (C) 2022 MTV Entertainment Studios. All Rights Reserved.)

This one is easy. 1883 was Yellowstone’s first prequel. It followed John Dutton’s ancestors, James and Margaret Dutton, and their children, Elsa and John Sr.

The prequel featured married stars Tim McGraw and Faith Hill as James and Margaret Dutton, and ended after one beautifully tragic season.

This wasn’t a closed-end story, though, as we learned of the family’s fate through a Yellowstone flashback. These shows can be as interconnected as they are hard to navigate.

The series also starred Sam Elliott and LaMonica Garrett as their characters joined the Duttons and many others on a Wagon Train north.

1923 (In Production)

Home at Last - 1923 Season 1 Episode 3
(Emerson Miller/Paramount+)

This 1883 sequel and Yellowstone prequel carries on the story in 1923 Montana.

James and Margaret have both died and their sons, John Jr. and Spencer, along with John’s family, live at the Dutton Montana homestead with their uncle Jacob Dutton (Harrison Ford) and his wife, Cara (Helen Mirren).

Spencer and Jack are the characters relative to the Dutton line we know on Yellowstone.

Both are now married to strong, passionate women with love stories that should be passed down through generations. I say should be since we’ve never heard about them on Yellowstone.

The connective tissue flashbacks on Yellowstone that featured 1883 stories are not present with 1923.

1923 Season 2 will conclude the chapter. We do not know when that chapter will continue.

1944 (In Development)

Two of the Dutton Men - Yellowstone Season 2 Episode 10
This is a screenshot from the season finale of Yellowstone. Yellowstone Season 2 Episode 10 is titled, “Sins of the Father.” (Paramount Network)

We have no details about the next Yellowstone prequel and 1883 and 1923 sequel, 1944; however, it seems logical that this will involve John Dutton’s father’s story.

We met him briefly as played by Dabney Coleman on Yellowstone Season 2 Episode 10.

From what I can recall, we have not had any further brushes with him, even when John is played by Josh Lucas as a younger man.

We have no further information on timing, cast, or storyline.

Yellowstone Sequels

6666 (In Development)

Jimmy With a Horse - Yellowstone Season 4 Episode 9
(Paramount Network)

During Yellowstone Season 4, the story shifted quite a bit toward Jimmy Hurdstrom (Jefferson White), a ranch hand and bearer of the Yellowstone brand.

When Jimmy failed to heed John’s advice, John sent him to a ranch in Texas to find himself. Sheridan’s interest in the ranch came when he purchased the actual ranch on which 6666 is based — The Four Sixes Ranch.

The series description follows:

Founded when Comanches still ruled West Texas, no ranch in America is more steeped in the history of the West than the 6666.

Still operating as it did two centuries before and encompassing an entire county, the 6666 is where the rule of law and the laws of nature merge in a place where the most dangerous thing one does is the next thing…

The 6666 is synonymous with the merciless endeavor to raise the finest horses and livestock in the world, and ultimately where world-class cowboys are born and made.

There hasn’t been any chatter about the series in a while, so as far as we know, it’s still on track.

Madison (Formerly Used Working Title 2024)

This is where it gets confusing.

There has long been talk about a present-day offshoot of Yellowstone, but since it was first revealed at about the same time talks between Sheridan, Costner, and Paramount+ broke down, it was believed to be a sequel.

Matthew McConaughey’s and Michelle Pfeiffer’s names were attached. However, it’s not the Yellowstone continuation with the Dutton family but another story altogether.

Paramount+ shared that the series is a heartfelt study of grief and human connection following a New York City family in the Madison River valley of central Montana.

“Michelle Pfeiffer is a remarkable talent who imbues every role with emotional depth, authenticity and grace,” said Chris McCarthy, Paramount Global Co-CEO and President/CEO, Showtime & MTV Entertainment Studios.

“She is the perfect anchor to the newest chapter of the Yellowstone universe, Madison, from the brilliant mind of Taylor Sheridan.”

This release makes no mention of the Dutton family or the stars TV Line reported to be attached.

Untitled Yellowstone Continuation

Happily Married Couple - Yellowstone Season 5 Episode 1
(Paramount Network)

Apparently, there is still another series in the offing that will carry on the Dutton saga with stars Kelly Reilly, Cole Hauser, and Luke Grimes said to be thisclose to locking down contracts.

Maybe it’s just me, but this is the story I’m most interested in following.

Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler give love stories a good name, and Kayce Dutton offers a balance to their passions for each other and life.

Until the press release for Madison, it seemed that Madison and 2024 were two different shows. The press release cleared that up by noting that Madison had previously been announced as 2024.

Given the nature of the other prequels, we assumed that 2024 would be a Dutton offshoot of some kind. So, we have no idea what this unnamed series might be called or how it’s referenced. We only know that sources are fairly certain it will come to pass.

And the latest news is that this untitled continuation is already titled YELLOWSTONE! That’s right. Instead of canceling the show and starting another, they are considering continuing Yellowstone.

This is surprising, but not because you wouldn’t think they’d carry on without Costner. The surprise is that Yellowstone’s streaming rights go to Peacock, so creating a new show in his absence would allow Paramount+ to stream the continuation of Paramount+.

This is a developing story, so we’ll keep this space updated!

Where Does Matthew McConaughey Fit In?

AUSTIN, TEXAS - APRIL 25: Matthew McConaughey attends the 2024 Mack, Jack & McConaughey Gala at ACL Live on April 25, 2024 in Austin, Texas. (Photo by Amy E. Price/Getty Images)
(Photo by Amy E. Price/Getty Images)

While McConaughey’s name was attached to one of these series initially, he might not fit in at all.

Puck News has been closer than any other source to what’s happening here, and after the Madison announcement, they practically closed the door on his involvement in any way.

McConaughey could have been scared off by the long negotiation process and the very public dispute between Sheridan and Costner. While many stars have found a home with Sheridan across multiple projects, McConaughey is known for being laid back and introspective.

Perhaps he thinks it’s not a good fit. That’s sheer speculation on my part, of course.

I can’t think of anyone more suited to stepping into the Yellowstone Saga than McConaughey, so we’ll keep our ears to the ground with any potential news on that front.

Other Taylor Sheridan Series

Mike talks on the phone as he walks up to the crime scene to see the aftermath of a wreck that killed 12 girls
(Dennis P. Mong Jr./Paramount +)

Of course, none of this speaks to the myriad other shows Sheridan now produces.

Of those already airing, we have Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, and Special Ops: Lioness.

Billy Bob Thornton’s Landman premieres in conjunction with Yellowstone Season 5b on Sunday, November 17.

You can find past seasons of Yellowstone on Peacock, and new episodes on Paramount Network. All other series are on Paramount+. If you ever consider selling your soul for a fast buck, consider how much Paramount regrets selling the streaming rights to Peacock.

It may have been bad for their business, but it’s excellent for us — it spawned an entire universe with Sheridan.

The title of the article says it all. We’re trying to make sense of the sequels and prequels, and it’s not easy.

TV is in its Prequel Era and it seems we're okay with that: Why are we continually satisfied with a TV landscape that contains no surprises?

The post Prequel Problems: Why Are TV Execs So Fixated on the Past? appeared first on TV Fanatic.

"The most important things to remember about backstory are that (a) everyone has a history and (b) most of it isn't very interesting." — Stephen King, On Writing

Sequels used to be the way film franchises were created, but these days, prequels are the preferred mode of extending a TV series.

It's almost as if TV audiences explicitly asked for stories set in the past of their favorite shows at some point.

Unexpected Interruption - 1923 Season 1 Episode 7
(Emerson Miller/Paramount+ © 2022 Viacom International Inc. All Rights Reserved.)

Whether they were asked or not, TV executives are banking on audiences who want to know how every story ends before it starts.

Where did this prequel trend come from, and why has the TV industry embraced it so thoroughly?

Playing with Light
(Amazon Studios)

Is it solely about money, or is there a more significant cultural reason keeping our collective gaze focused on the rearview?

Prequel vs Sequel

Movie sequels as a concept stretch back to the beginnings of cinema, and movie series (or franchises) are not particularly new either, as seen with the James Bond films that started in the 1960s.

The 1970s brought us into the age of "numbered" sequels, i.e., films that keep the original's title and add a number, like Jaws 2.

These sequels rarely advanced the story, and they usually just remixed the original in a worse way.

The Mandalorian Season 2 Episode 8: The Rescue photo 8
(Disney+)

However, sequels maintained a timeline that moved forward, whether they were set just moments after the previous film ended or after a time jump.

Aside from the odd stealth prequel (like Temple of Doom in 1984), the concept of filling in the backstory of an existing film is a relatively recent phenomenon.

The biggest modern influences were the Star Wars prequels, with their galaxy-spanning lore, and the rise of movies based on comic books, where origin stories are hugely important.

Related: The Acolyte Premiere Gets Blasted By Star Wars Fans: Abject Bigotry or Legitimate Criticism?

These digressions into the past somehow became the norm in the TV series format over the past couple of decades, to the point where most "new" shows now are offshoots of previously existing ones.

The Appeal of Prequels

One downside of traditional sequels is that they keep a franchise tied to the original actors.

The New Normal - Stranger Things Season 4 Episode 9
(Netflix (Screenshot))

This can be an instant audience draw for future installments.

Still, it can also create scheduling and creative difficulties if the original cast isn't available or actors have aged out of their roles.

Another downside is the need to keep creating installments of a continuing story even after the initial premise or source material has been exhausted.

Prequels, on the other hand, use the beginning of the original story as an ending to work toward.

This provides a great deal of freedom in choosing the timeframe of a prequel and allows the opportunity to use a completely different (younger) cast for an established set of characters.

No Longer a Vision - 1883 Season 1 Episode 9
(Emerson Miller/Paramount+ (C) 2022 MTV Entertainment Studios. All Rights Reserved.)

Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan used this freedom to great effect by setting the show's prequels at very specific years in the Dutton family history.

1883 marked the beginning of the Dutton saga, with the journey out West of their original ancestors.

Related: Elsbeth Backlash: Has CBS' Lighthearted Murder Mystery Lost Its Way Already?

This series also has the distinction of being truly limited to one season, both by Sheridan's expressed wishes and some pretty hard-to-undo events in the finale.

1923, on the other, hand is returning for a much-needed second season that will bring prodigal son Spencer Dutton back home from overseas to defend his family's ranch from the army led by strongmen Banner Creighton and Whitfield.

The world of the original story also helps form a retroactive template for any prequel spinoffs.

Jacob Doing Ranch Work - 1923 Season 1 Episode 8
(Emerson Miller/Paramount+ © 2022 Viacom International Inc. All Rights Reserved.)

Knowing a story's future history combines the satisfaction of puzzle-solving with the comfort of not having to worry about which characters survive because that's a known quantity.

This is where the widespread popularity of prequels becomes confusing.

Is Spoiler Culture a Factor?

We've entered the Golden Age of people who read the last page of a book before buying it.

If The Twilight Zone TV series and M. Night Shyamalan's films represent one extreme of the surprise twist spectrum, then we are living at the farthest opposite end.

Eye of the Beholder
(CBS (Screenshot))

Prequels are not the only indication of this.

There has also been a recent resurgence of Columbo-style detective shows like Elsbeth and Poker Face, in which the audience knows the killer's identity from the start.

Elsbeth's Season 1 finale cleverly strayed from this pattern for solid narrative reasons.

Related: The Bear, Which Demands Discussion, Is Dropping All Episodes at Once. Here’s the Case for Episodic Drops for New TV

If art reflects the societal conditions it's created under, then uncertain times might indeed explain an outsized desire for predictability.

There is also the real possibility of spoiler fatigue.

With entire seasons of shows dropping all at once, it's become virtually impossible to avoid headlines announcing huge plot reveals the second you go online.

Samantha Jones Cameo - And Just Like That...
(Max (Screenshot))

Surrendering to the inevitability of spoilers might have been the only real choice for those who wanted to continue enjoying TV shows.

However, one could argue that we'd been moving toward our current era of prequel saturation even earlier than that.

After all, if the criterium is knowing how a story ends, then the 1997 film Titanic could technically be considered a prequel, and it did pretty well at the box office.

What Do We Want From Prequels?

It should be easy by now to guess why TV execs love prequels: they offer brand recognition, a guaranteed audience, and unlimited potential for expansion.

Sheldon - Young Sheldon Season 6 Episode 18
(Sonja Flemming/CBS)

Why do *we* keep watching them, though?

Beyond the comforts of connecting the "canon" dots of our favorite IPs, there would seem to come a point where enough of a show's history has been sifted through to satisfy even the most diehard of fans.

Related: House of the Dragon: Will a Nearly Two-Year Hiatus Leave Fans Uninterested In a Return to Westeros?

Young Sheldon was a wildly successful prequel partly from residual goodwill for the adult character from The Big Bang Theory but mostly because it was an engaging story setup on its own, as it followed a genius child growing up in a conventional family in Texas.

This was exactly what the prequel genre was made for, where a character's history deepens and expands our understanding and enjoyment of them and their world.

We all contain multitudes, as do our most beloved TV characters.

Mr. Spock - Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 Episode 10
(Michael Gibson/Paramount+)

However, those characters weren't always with us.

They were once part of an entirely new fictitious world that we entered without centuries of backstory.

And we fell in love with them just the same.

We might consider leaving room for original stories so we're not reliant on prequels and don't have to do weeks of homework viewing to watch and enjoy a TV show.

Culturally, this prequel trend could be an attempt at a version of community, a way to narrow our exponential online choices into a more manageable group of shared stories.

Or, it could just be a natural business response of the entertainment industry to go all in on prequels since they've been the most successful form of film and TV projects over the past two decades.

Corlys Listens - House of the Dragon Season 1 Episode 7
(Ollie Upton/HBO)

What's Next?

Prequels have benefited from TV audiences' taste for binge-viewing.

The urge to click "Next Episode" repeatedly blurs the ends and beginnings of a show's seasons and softens the narrative passage of time.

Bingeing also lowers any resistance to introducing new characters, actors, and settings since, with prequels, they still inhabit the familiar world of the original show.

Related: Based on a True Story: The Best TV Created from Real-Life Events

It's not as jarring an experience as starting a completely different series that requires a brief acclimation period.

However, viewers might want to examine the impulse to constantly return to our previous entertainment choices, especially if it's just to avoid the slight discomfort of the unknown.

Good stories don't start at the very beginning; they start at a point of change.

Amy Checks Sheldon's Work - Young Sheldon Season 7 Episode 14
(Warner Brothers Inc / Bill Inoshita)

Prequels ask the wrong questions of an original show.

They demand linear, cause-and-effect explanations for current character traits and both literal and metaphorical roadmaps for places that were never meant to be named.

Plus, there's no chance of ruining the pristine memory of an existing original show if you never move beyond it in time; you only play with what events might have happened before.

If we'd only set ourselves free from the dominance of prequels, there are so many new TV shows we could enjoy (such as the hundreds of historical romance novels aside from Bridgerton that could be adapted).

Queen Charlotte on Netflix - Bridgerton
(LIAM DANIEL/NETFLIX)

It isn't easy to imagine a TV landscape like that when there aren't many new shows to choose from.

But making a point to watch a new show every now and then might help increase the variety of TV content in the future.

Lawmen: Bass Reeves was initially announced as an 1883 spinoff, but that will not be the case when the show premieres this weekend. Get the details.

The creator of Lawmen: Bass Reeves is setting the record straight about whether the show is a spinoff of 1883.

When the show was initially ordered, it was billed by Paramount+ as a spinoff of the first Yellowstone prequel.

Chad Feehan, the creator and showrunner of the highly-anticipated new drama, is opening up about what changed to TV Line.

Making the show a spinoff of the critically-lauded 1883 "was an idea we briefly talked about," Feehan explained to the outlet.

"But for me, once I learned some of the things I didn't know about Bass' life, and decided where we wanted to start the story and where we wanted to end the story, it preceded 1883," he added.

David Oyelowo as Bass Reeves - Lawmen: Bass Reeves
(Sarah Coulter/Paramount+)

In a separate interview with TV Insider, Feehan said the idea to make it a spinoff was talked about before he was hired.

"There was conversations about a tie into 1883 before I was hired, and when I was hired I was given the freedom to craft the most compelling story that I could alongside the other writers," Feehan says to TV Insider.

"I was given the opportunity, if there was a place to tie it to 1883, that was OK, but there was no obligation to do so.

"And so, we landed where we landed, which was our story takes place from roughly 1862 to 1877.

Donald Sutherland as Judge Parker - Lawmen: Bass Reeves
(Sarah Coulter/Paramount+)

"And Bass primarily operates in [Native American] territory, which is modern day Oklahoma and Fort Smith, Arkansas.

"And so it didn't feel natural or organic to bring in any of the 1883 characters to the story."

It's certainly interesting because there's a good chance many fans of 1883 — and the wider Yellowstone franchise — will be going into the series thinking it will be connected to the franchise.

But it is refreshing that the creatives have separated it to benefit the story being told.

Dennis Quaid as Sherrill Lynn - Lawmen: Bass Reeves
(Sarah Coulter/Paramount+)

"Revealing the untold story of the most legendary lawman in the Old West, Lawmen: Bass Reeves follows the journey of Reeves (Oyelowo) and his rise from enslavement to law enforcement as the first Black U.S. Marshal west of the Mississippi," the logline teases.

"Despite arresting over 3,000 outlaws during the course of his career, the weight of the badge was heavy, and he wrestled with its moral and spiritual cost to his beloved family."

"Lawmen: Bass Reeves is an all-new, standalone anthology series and future iterations will follow other iconic lawmen and outlaws who have impacted history," Paramount+ affirms.

In addition to Oyelowo, the series stars Lauren E. Banks, Demi Singleton, Forrest Goodluck, Emmy Award winner Barry Pepper, Honorary Oscar recipient Donald Sutherland, and Emmy Award nominee Dennis Quaid.

Created for television by executive producer and showrunner Chad Feehan, Lawmen: Bass Reeves is also executive produced by Oscar nominee Taylor Sheridan, Oyelowo, David C. Glasser, Jessica Oyelowo, David Permut, Christina Alexandra Voros, Ron Burkle, Bob Yari, and David Hutkin.

The series is produced by MTV Entertainment Studios, 101 Studios, Sheridan's Bosque Ranch Productions, and Oyelowo's Yoruba Saxon and is distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution outside of Paramount+ international markets.

It looks like Paramount Network's decision to air 1883 Season 1 is off to a winning start.

The cable network re-aired the first two episodes of the Yellowstone prequel Sunday night, and the numbers don't lie:

3.8 million viewers tuned in when replays and simulcasts are factored in.

The series has been available on Paramount+ for over a year, so these numbers signal that many viewers didn't follow the show to the streaming service after its short-term launch on the cabler in December 2021.

At that time, 1883 Season 1 Episode 1 launched on Paramount Network with around 5 million viewers. It also set a record on Paramount+.

Paramount Network notes that the 3.8 million viewers marks the #1 scripted series premiere on cable in three years.

Even more impressive:

1883 Season 1 Episode 1 and 1883 Season 1 Episode 2's numbers were four times the time period average.

It highlights the desire of fans to watch more of Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone expansive universe.

First Blood - 1883 Season 1 Episode 3

It also could be that fans are clamoring for more from the franchise as Yellowstone Season 5 remains on a lengthy hiatus.

Also on an extended hiatus is 1923, the latest chapter in the Dutton family saga.

1923 Season 1 wrapped earlier this year, and production on 1923 Season 2 was supposed to be well underway by now.

However, NBC Montana recently reported that the series had been grounded due to the WGA strike.

(Emerson Miller/Paramount+ © 2022 Viacom International Inc. All Rights Reserved.)

When 1923 was ordered, many thought it would span one season like 1883, but Sheridan realized while writing that the show would benefit more from a limited, two-season run.

Given the healthy ratings for the series, Paramount+ followed Sheridan's lead and ordered an additional season of the Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford drama.

But there's no telling when it might return, and we're certain Paramount Network will be bringing over 1923 Season 1 to the network at some point.

We recently reported that CBS was considering shoring up its fall schedule with Paramount+ originals like SEAL Team.

Remember when 1883 Season 1 launched on Paramount Network out of Yellowstone?

At the time, a handful of episodes aired before viewers had to stream the rest of the episodes on Paramount+.

It caused a lot of commotion amongst fans who did not have the streaming service.

Thankfully, those fans are getting their wish and will be able to watch all episodes of 1883 this summer on Paramount Network.

1883, the Yellowstone Origin story, will air weekly on Paramount Network beginning Sunday, June 18 at 8 PM ET/PT.

The good TV news doesn't stop there, either.

The special broadcast will include extended featurettes at the end of each episode, meaning 1883 fanatics can get an inside look at how the episodes were made, among other things.

1883 follows the Dutton family as they embark on a journey west through the Great Plains toward the last bastion of untamed America.

It is a stark retelling of Western expansion, and an intense study of one family fleeing poverty to seek a better future in America's promised land — Montana.

Sam Elliot plays cowboy Shea Brennan.

The cast is rounded out by Isabel May, LaMonica Garrett, Marc Rissmann, Audie Rick, Eric Nelsen, James Landry Hébert, and Noah Le Gros.

The initial episodes of 1883 broke premiere records for Paramount+ and the series was met with a warm reception from fans and critics alike.

It's rare for spinoffs to get off the ground running, but 1883 Season 1 will go down as one of the biggest spinoffs ever.

It set the stage for a Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford-led follow-up, 1923, which premiered in December.

The show has been renewed for a second season.

Bass Reeves is based on the true story of the titular lawman.

"Reeves, known as the greatest frontier hero in American history, worked in the post-Reconstruction era as a federal peace officer in the Indian Territory, capturing over 3,000 of the most dangerous criminals without ever being wounded," the official logline reads.

Pepper is set to play Esau Pierce, who is described as "the leader of the 1st Cherokee Mounted Rifles and a battle tested warrior himself."

Pepper has an impressive list of credits, including Saving Private Ryan, The Green Mile, and 25th Hour.

Oyelowo is set to play Bass Reeves, while Quaid is on board as Sherrill Lynn, a Deputy U.S. Marshal.

1883 was a roaring success for Paramount+, scoring strong viewership and a great response from critics, so Bass Reeves has a lot to live up to in the new series.

Initially, 1883 was renewed for a second season, but the end of the season wrapped up all of the storylines at the center of the show.

It was later clarified by Sheridan that 1883 was only set to span one season.

"I created this peek through time to show you this one specific journey," Sheridan told Deadline in 2022.

"I'm not someone who likes to tie everything up in a bow and explain how everyone lived happily ever after, or didn't… for me, as a storyteller it feels close-ended."

"I'm going to peek through the window of a different era and see what I see then."

Yellowstone is currently on a midseason hiatus, and the show might be ending due to alleged unrest between Kevin Costner and production.

But 1923 is airing now on Paramount+, and a spinoff titled 6666 is also in the works.

"Known as the greatest frontier hero in American history, and also believed to be the inspiration for The Lone Ranger, Reeves worked in the post-Reconstruction era as a federal peace officer in the Indian Territory, capturing over 3,000 of the most dangerous criminals without ever being wounded" reads the official description.

There was a lot of confusion about the future of 1883 when it was picked up for a second season, but the first wrapped with most of the characters dead.

Sam Elliott, Faith Hill, Isabel May, and Tim McGraw are among its stars.

However, franchise overlord Taylor Sheridan revealed that the show had only been envisioned as a one-season drama from the jump.

"I created this peek through time to show you this one specific journey," Sheridan told Deadline in early 2022.

"I'm not someone who likes to tie everything up in a bow and explain how everyone lived happily ever after, or didn't… for me, as a storyteller it feels close-ended. I'm going to peek through the window of a different era and see what I see then."

1923 follows 1883, picking up with Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren starring as a new generation of Duttons.

That show premiered to solid ratings in December and is planned to run 16 episodes.

The mothership series, Yellowstone, is currently on hiatus and is expected to return in the summer with the back half of Yellowstone Season 5.

The franchise has grown exponentially, and the viewership has also staged an upswing.
