Mary Meehan, producer and host of GodTalk, a TV series on cable-access stations,
and author o feighteen books including Praying with Women of theBible and
Praying with Visionary Women, interviews teens from different religions and
faith traditions:
In recent years the media has focused on problems teenagers in our society
face such as peer pressure, drugs, gangs, and violence. Scant attention is
given to the role that religious faith plays in the lives of youth- The Latin
word "credo" can be translated "that for which I give my heart." Encounter
11 teens from different religions who share the yearning of their souls for
God. In this program Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Mormon, Baptist, and Roman Catholic
youth discuss their understanding of God, and the beliefs and values that
strengthen them on their spiritual joumey.
They
do not seek to win converts to their religious views, but rather to share
the impact faith has in their everyday lives. In a world where prejudice is
often based on a lack of understanding of another's religious beliefs, these
conversations are a powerful example of young people engaging in open, respectful
interfaith dialogue. This kind of forum can be used in schools, churches,
and other institutions to foster awareness of the impact of the 'faith factor"
on the lives of young people and to examine the role that religious beliefs
can play in promoting greater harmony, justice and peace in our world.
Here
are a few of the questions these teens answered.
How
would you describe God?
Where is God?
What role does your faith/religious tradition play in your life?
For what values do you give your heart?
If you had one day to live, how would you spend it?
In what ways does your religious beliefs give you strength in the challenges
you face?
What are the most important values you learned from your faith tradition?
If
you were asked these same questions, how would you respond?
