TV is full of memorable characters with lots of unique characteristics. Our favorite characters stand out amongst others.

This list of TV’s most unshakable optimists presents the most upbeat, positive people on television. These optimists are known for their bubbly disposition, happy thoughts, and obnoxious perkiness.

No matter what life throws at these eternally optimistic TV characters, they refuse to lose their positive outlook.

Feeling Hopeless - New Amsterdam Season 5 Episode 7
(NBC/Ralph Bavaro)

Check out our top unshakable TV optimists, and then jump into our comments section and tell us your favorite optimistic TV character.

How We Spot TV’s Most Unshakable Optimists

Characters with unshakable optimism always find the silver lining in the clouds and the bright spot in the bad.

Happy, upbeat, and sometimes neurotic optimists often try to spread their positive demeanor to others. Happy people love to be around them, and cranky people love to hate them.

But loved or hated, optimistic people live their lives to the fullest and never give up.

They inspire others and us to find the good in every situation and never stay down too long. Check out our selection of TV’s most unshakable optimists.

Jess Day – New Girl

Jess Day is an annoyingly perky elementary school teacher with an envigorating thirst for life on New Girl. Her quirky personality, crazy dance moves, and bold, colorful clothing make her endearing to her close friends and roommates.

Jess Needs to Impress - New Girl
(FOX)

She also proves that people of the opposite gender can have a strong, successful platonic relationship.

Day’s eternally optimistic outlook rubs off on her four male roommates and snarky best friend, helping them through tough times.

Jess kept a positive outlook, no matter what crisis she went through — from her cheating boyfriend to losing her job to having to live with her (annoying AF) ex (that becomes her current at the end) BF.

Luther Hargreeves – The Umbrella Academy

Luther Hargreeves is also affectionately known as Number One to his adopted father and family of seven adopted children who had unnatural abilities.

Luther Hulk Moment - The Umbrella Academy Season 2 Episode 6
(Netflix)

Number One was half man, half ape, thanks to a life-saving serum given to him by his father. Despite Reginald causing the massive physicological malformation, Luther kept a deep, unwavering loyalty to his father, Sir Reginald Hargreeves.

When all the other children left their abusive, morally compromised father and the Umbrella Academy, Luther stayed out of misplaced family duty.

Despite physical deformities, spending time alone in space, and massive family dysfunction, Luther retains a happy, positive attitude.

Even when he and the other members of the Umbrella Academy team faced the destruction of all life, Luther stayed optimistic and always tried to find the positive.

Betty Suarez – Ugly Betty

From Be-Shure
(ABC)

Ugly Betty follows the life of Betty Suarez, a uniquely different “internally beautiful” ugly duckling amid a world of beauty.

Her nerdy looks often get her dismissed and insulted by her co-workers. But she never lets it get to her.

She finds a way to look past the ugly of people’s personalities and see the good within them, no matter how vile they behave.

Betty’s optimism and friendliness are fresh air in a world of yucky people. Her willingness to overlook being dismissed for her appearance rather than valued for her personality makes her optimism unshakable.

Phil Dunphy – Modern Family

The Godfather - Modern Family Season 4 Episode 13
(ABC)

Phil Dunphy is one of those annoyingly unapologetically positive people, a complete contrast to his snarky, bitchy wife and brash father-in-law.

Dunphy is very in touch with his inner feelings and isn’t afraid to wear his emotions on his sleeve — good or bad.

He’s very optimistic and uber-excited about everything. His general joy of life and nails on a chalkboard voice are great in small quantities on Modern Family.

Frequently, his over-exuberant personality rubs everyone in his family the wrong way, although strangers don’t seem to mind his too muchness.

Janine Teagues – Abbot Elementary

Janine in a Turtleneck - Abbott Elementary Season 3 Episode 9
(Disney/Gilles Mingasson)

Janine Teagues (Quinta Brunson) is a second-grade elementary school teacher at Abbott Elementary who is on a mission to improve the lives of her students.

Her plucky positivity inspires her students and some of her co-workers. She stays happy and keeps a bright outlook, while the rest of the staff becomes jaded from the hustle and bustle of the school’s inner workings.

Ms. Teagues embraces and inspires her students to be their best, even when everyone around them gives up and punches the clock.

Her optimism was infectious, and a bright spot in an otherwise blah school system to keep the show entertaining and the audience captivated.

Max Goodwin – New Amsterdam

New Amsterdam gave viewers a new spin on the traditional medical series. It had the same complex medical cases, an expansive group of talented doctors, and memorable patients.

Things Come to Light -tall - New Amsterdam Season 5 Episode 12
(Ralph Bavaro/NBC)

But what stood out amongst its relatives was that the show focused on medical cases in a public hospital, meaning no insurance didn’t mean no care.

Max Goodwin was a different kind of doctor. He cared about his patients and his hospital staff. When problems came up, he created solutions, no matter what it took.

Even while he was battling life-threatening cancer and single parenthood, Max stayed optimistic about things working out.

He was the best hospital administrator because instead of worrying about how much medical care a person could afford, he cared about what treatment the patient needed and how to get it to them.

Glenn Sturgis – Superstore

Glenn - Superstore Season 5 Episode 8
(Tyler Golden/NBC)

Glenn was the high-pitched, devout Christian co-manager of a large superstore with an optimistic disposition.

Between his religious beliefs and his naive, push-over nature, Glenn often finds himself at odds with his assistant manager over expressing his Christian views at work.

Despite the stress of having eleven foster children with his wife, Glenn stays happy and keeps a positive outlook.

Erin Hannon – The Office

The Office was full of memorable characters, from the often inappropriate manager, Michael Scott (Jim Carell), to the chirpy receptionist, Erin (Ellie Kemper).

Erin Hannon
(© NBC Universal, Inc./Chris Haston)

Erin took over the position from Pam Beesly, replacing the snarky older receptionist with her happy, silly, and often childlike demeanor.

While Pam despised her job and many of the people she worked with, Erin adores her co-workers, including the exceptionally annoying antics of Michael and Dwight.

Erin often participated in office shenanigans, giving in to having fun at work. While the rest of the staff had become jaded to the work environment, frequently acting snarky and miserable at work, Erin thrived in her positivity.

Ray Palmer – Legends of Tomorrow

Ray Palmer - DC's Legends of Tomorrow Season 5 Episode 7
(Dean Buscher/The CW)

Brandon Routh portrays the playful, overly positive Ray Palmer in Arrow and the Legends of Tomorrow.

Brilliant and cheerful, Palmer made everyone around him want to do the right thing and be a better person, including the villain who fell in love with him.

Even while he and his gang of good guys travel through time to stop uber-bad guys from committing heinous events, he finds a way to look on the bright side.

No matter what timeline he’s in or what situation he’s dealing with, Ray finds the silver lining and inspires those around him not to give up.

Ella Lopez – Lucifer

You don’t expect humor, honor, justice, or perkiness when watching a show about the Devil. But then again, you don’t expect to see the Devil be a good guy.

OMG Ella - Lucifer Season 5 Episode 7
(Netflix)

Lucifer was a series that put an awesome spin on an overdone trope. We didn’t just like the devil. We loved him, as did everyone except criminals.

Including devout religious forensic scientist Ella Lopez. Ella saw spirituality differently than others, including how she viewed the devil, Lucifer Morningstar, as he called himself.

Ella’s sweet demeanor and bubbly persona make her a delightful breath of fresh air amid death and evil.

The Lucifer series tackled religion, crime, justice (vengeance), romance, and more in a light, comedic yet entertaining dramedy. Most of the bright spots in the darkness came from Miss Lopez, the ray of sunshine.

Elsbeth Tascioni – Elsbeth

Elsbeth (Carrie Preston) isn’t just unconventional in her wardrobe, obsession with one too many bags, and all things NY touristy.

Elsbeth in pink hat - Elsbeth Season 1 Episode 10 - A Fitting Finale
(Michael Parmelee/CBS)

She’s also a brilliant attorney who uses her keen sense of perception to help the Chicago PD solve casts alongside her partner and best friend, Officer Kaya Blanke (Carra Patterson).

But Tascioni isn’t meant to solve cases. She was sent to Chicago as a spy to determine whether the police captain, C.W. Wagner (Wendell Pierce), was a corrupt cop on the loose.

Elsbeth maintains a positive disposition even when confronted with criminals, horrible crime scenes, or heinous illegal activity. It’s admirable — if a bit creepy — how she confronts killers and crooks in such an off-handed, optimistic way.

Kimmy Schmidt – Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

The premise of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (Ellie Kemper) turns a horror story — living with a cult — into a comedy as she starts over in New York City after escaping her kidnappers.

Ellie Kemper - Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
(Netflix)

She faces dozens of trials and tribulations as she tries to get on with her life post-cult. Kimmy has to overcome her lack of exposure to the outside world and delve headfirst into all that life offers.

From normal, everyday activities like getting a job or going outside to more advanced life adventures like having a love triangle and going to court.

Everything was a source of bewilderment and amazement as Kimmy embraced living independently and exploring the world.

Throughout it all, she had the most amazing optimism and an inspiring way of overcoming severe traumas without letting them affect her future.

Leslie Knope – Parks & Recreation

Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) is the Deputy Director of the Pawnee, Indiana Parks and Recreation Department and a dedicated public servant.

Leslie Knope at the Park - Parks and Recreation Season 1 Episode 1
(NBC (Peacock screenshot))

She aims to become the first female President and, as part of her civic duty, sits on multiple action committees for her town.

Despite having a lot on her plate and huge political ambitions, Leslie stays upbeat and optimistic about everything in her life.

She feels a deep loyalty to those she considers her friends and fellow townsfolk, and she strongly desires always to do the right thing.

What Do You Think About TV’s Most Unshakable Optimists?

While there are many different TV characters tropes, optimists are the ones we tend to remember the most. Happy, perky people tend to catch our eyes, whether because their optimism is infectious or their cheerfulness is annoying AF.

Are you the type of TV viewer who likes cheerful, optimistic characters, or do you prefer the relatable grumps and their disdain for people?

When we watch TV, we tend to gravitate toward a favorite character, often due to a quirk or mannerism.

You understand what we mean if you’ve watched The Big Bang Theory or the recently canceled Young Sheldon. And it’s not just the intro song.

Characters who rock the dance floor seemed like the perfect compilation of our favorite TV shows. Some are still ongoing, while others are nostalgic memories.

([Justine Yeung/NBC/Lionsgate], [Michael Courtney/NBC/Lionsgate], [Courtesy of Netflix], [Courtesy of Netflix], [Courtesy of CBS], [David Giesbrecht/USA Network])

We’ve included characters who set a trend with their own dance moves (who hasn’t done the Carlton?) and rounded up those who just love to boogie down for a good time.

Related: The Age of Nostalgia: Why Young Audiences Are Seeking Out Old TV

But we haven’t included everyone. So, after you’ve checked out these selections by your friends at TVF, tell us your favorite dancing character in the comments.

Max – Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist

Max NYC - Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist Season 2 Episode 13
(Justine Yeung/NBC/Lionsgate)

When you’re watching a show about a woman who hears people’s thoughts in song form, you expect some dancing to occur.

The cast of Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist did not disappoint. Of particular note for his belty lyrics and swag dance moves was Max, played by Pitch Perfect alum Skylar Astin. You may also recognize him as the lead of So Help Me Todd.

Zoey saw Max as the fun, opposite-gender best friend. But he saw her as his number-one love interest. A fact that he often expressed in musical form every time the two were in close proximity.

With the singing, Max also busted some serious dance moves during his declarations of love, unbeknown to him.

Luckily, Zoey overcame her hang-ups and gave the good guy a chance instead of keeping him in the friend zone.

But the show didn’t last long enough for fans to know if their relationship withstood the passing of time.

They did release a movie, “Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas Trailer Teases a Musical Conclusion.”

Janelle and Tal – Step Up High Water

While the ’90s were all about family values and sports shows, Y2K brought the dance trend. It started with the teen classic movie Save the Last Dance, starring Julia Stiles and Sean Patrick Thomas.

By 2006, the uber-talented Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan launched a franchise when they starred in the teen cult film Step Up. What followed was a six-movie saga that inspired a series spinoff.

Step Up High Water was a three-season teen dance dramedy that followed twins Janelle and Tal as their family moved to Atlanta.

Twins Tal and Janelle arrive at the Atlanta airport after an unwanted move.
(Starz/YouTube Screenshot)

There, they enroll in High Water High, a performing arts school known for its intense competitiveness.

As is the Step Up anthology tradition, Tal (Petrice Jones) and Janelle (Lauryn Alisa McClain) are obsessed with dancing.

While others on our list just love to dance for fun, the twins live for it, often making sacrifices in their personal lives for their art.

Peter Burke – White Collar

Swearing to Secrecy - White Collar Season 6 Episode 2
(David Giesbrecht/USA Network)

Lately, I’ve been on a binge-watching marathon of completed series I haven’t seen, and most recently on the list was White Collar.

It was just in time, too, given that they just announced that White Collar will soon be returning for a reboot.

I dreaded how it ended after developing such a fondness for Moz and Neal. I’d hate to have been sitting with that annoyance for years if I’d watched it when it first came on.

Related: White Collar Reboot Starring Matt Bomer, Tiffani Thiessen in Development

Watching it was also a bit nostalgic for a Xennial who grew up with Tiffani Thiessen and Mark-Paul Gosselaar as Zack and Kelly for three decades. Especially since we can get our “Zack” fix on Found as Mister. Who knew he could be so sinister?!

Thiessen played the enchanting Elizabeth Burk, affectionately known to Moz as Mrs. Suit. Throughout six seasons, Beth was the supportive wife of FBI agent Peter Burke (Tim McKay).

What Happened to Mozzie?
(David Giesbrecht/USA Network)

Peter was tight-laced and buttoned up, always going by the book, despite the many escapades of his charge and eventual friend, Neal Caffrey, played by Matt Bomer.

While he was all work when he was on duty, he was a suave romantic outside the office who loved spoiling his wife. And who would have guessed he has some serious moves on the dance floor?

It’ll be great to see if he still has his fancy moves when the reboot airs, sadly without everyone’s favorite conman best friend, Theodore “Mozart” Winters.

Willie Garson passed away in 2021, but his legacy is said to live on.

Lucifer – Lucifer

Chloe Saves the Day - Lucifer Season 2 Episode 14
(FOX)

When you think of Lucifer, you may picture the stereotypical red guy with horns, a pointy tail, and a trident.

But when I hear it, I think of the sinfully sexy Lucifer Morningstar, portrayed by Tom Ellis for six seasons. The voice, that accent, them eyes, those cheekbones, and OMG, that body.

We would expect the king of Hell to be charming and debonair, but we didn’t expect him to be a good guy.

Related: Heavy on the Rizz: The Most Charismatic Leading Men on TV

Seriously, the whole show is about him helping an LAPD police division solve crimes while being in love with his police partner, Chloe.

He was caught in multiple love triangles, like his relationship with his therapist, who became his sister-in-law.

Subdued Lucifer Season 5 Episode 7
(Netflix)

And his relationship with Chloe, who has a child with Daniel, who is often partnered up with Lucifer.

Sticking with being a version of the devil we’d never expect to see on our screens, we got more than one occasion of Lucifer doing a gig.

His talents extended past dancing to being a hell of a piano player and a stand-out bluesy singer.

His trademark phrase, “What is it that you truly desire?” spoken in that hypnotic lyrical voice, was enough to make the most crooked criminal crack.

And it made the most prude females — and often males — swoon at his feet. No one could resist his swag.

Klaus – The Umbrella Academy

Klaus in the Car - The Umbrella Academy Season 2 Episode 10
(Netflix)

Every family has that one person who acts out against the norm. You may call them the black sheep, the outcast, or the screwup. I call it me.

But for The Umbrella Academy, “that” guy was Klaus Hargreeves (Robert Sheehan).

Of the seven infants adopted by conspiracy buff billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves, Klaus was the most unpredictable of the “heroes.”

Related: TV’s Most Complicated Father-Son Relationships

Tormented by his uncontrollable ability to speak to the dead, Klaus often turned to mindless partying as an escape.

Pile on his daddy issues from being the adopted son of Sir Reginald Hargreeves. Reg viewed the seven adopted infants as future saviors of the world due to their powers.

So much so that he named them Numbers One through Seven. Klaus was Number Four.

Cult Leader Klaus - The Umbrella Academy
(CHRISTOS KALOHORIDIS/NETFLIX)

With all that on your plate, plus being able to time-travel (uncontrolled) and basically not die, there’s no surprise that Klaus often lost himself in music and dance.

Dancing goes hand in hand with intoxication, which Number Four often was throughout the three seasons the show ran.

BTW, if you’re a fan like this chick, be ready in August, as we’re getting The Umbrella Academy Season 4 after two long years! Woot woot.

After battling the Guardians who were here to destroy Earth, it will be great to see Klaus’s fantastic wardrobe, snarky attitude, and anguished soul.

Urkel – Family Matters

Do the Urkel Dance starting with pulling up your pants.
(ABC/YouTube Screenshot)

Urkel is a signature part of growing up in the ’90s, a right of passage, and an iconic legend that paved a path for the equality of nerds after Revenge of the Nerds passed on the baton from the ’80s.

Known for his high-waisted pants, suspenders, glasses on a string, and squeaky voice, Jaleel White united the world with one trademark phrase, “Did I do that?”

It became the icebreaker we needed after an awkward or humiliating encounter. But even more, Urkel gave us the courage to be our true selves despite the opinions of those around us.

Related: ’90s Value-Oriented Series That Deserve a Second Look

So what’s that got to do with a list of characters who rock the dance floor? If you were around in that time period, you probably did the signature Urkel dance at least once.

It wasn’t a hip, cool dance to do like the Running Man, Vogue, or the Crisscross. But it was all the more fun because it didn’t require losing your breath to hit the steps.

Really, there were no steps at all. Just a goofy shuffle of the hips and a wild waving of the arms. It was fun and foolish and easy enough for the whole family to do for a TGIF night.

Barney – How I Met Your Mother

Barney Drinks In Style - How I Met Your Mother
(CBS)

Barney Stinson is a core member of the five friends of How I Met Your Mother. ’90s teen heartthrob Neil Patrick Harris plays him.

He’ll forever be known to this xennial as child doc Doogie Howser (no, not the Disney Hawaiian remake, although that one is pretty cute).

RIP to the legen — wait for it — dary (IYKYK) father of Doogie, actor James Sikking, who passed July 14, 2024.

Throughout the show’s six seasons, we often admired Barney’s sharp fashion sense, over-the-top exaggerated talking style, and impressive ability to pick up chicks. But, his womanizing ways often led him to become a major prick.

But despite his pigheaded conceit and annoying nuances, Barney was known to cut a rug a time or several over the show’s run.

It’s no surprise if you know the actor behind the character. This multi-Tony and Emmy award-winning star doesn’t just work on screen. He’s also done live Broadway shows and off-Broadway musical numbers,

JD – Scrubs

J.D.
(ABC via Getty Images)

Although Scrubs has been off the air for some time now, fans still have a nostalgic affection for the cast.

Scrubs revolves around the life (and often mental status) of Dr. John Dorian. JD (played by Zach Braff) is quirky and often annoying, but he’s got this dopey goodness that we can’t help but love.

JD has an abnormal obsession with his on-screen best friend and fellow doctor, Christopher Turk (Donald Faison).

Related: Is It a Mistake to Cancel So Help Me Todd?

It provides hilarious and awkward comedic relief in a normally tense, dramatic medical universe and situations.

It’s common for JD’s mental montages to encompass musical moments and random dance moves. But he would also get down with his white-boy awkwardness in real life.

Carlton – Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

Carlton tries to talk his way out of getting caught doing the Carlton dance by Will
(NBC/YouTube Screenshot)

If you were around in the ’90s, you either knew about or danced the Carlton at least once. It wasn’t the coolest dance, like The Tootsie Roll or The Butterfly, but it was pure, fun, and oh so nerdy.

Carlton was the whitest black guy on the block of Beverly Hills, a fact that his cousin the Fresh Prince, Will, loved to point out.

But when you’re raised rich, privileged, and attending a mostly white school, it’s to be expected that you’re a bit on the dry, preppy side.

While Will and his younger cousin, Ashley, were often seen boogieing it up to popular hip-hop songs from the time, Carlton preferred to throw down to a different melody.

The music legend Tom Jones is known to an entire generation, albeit an older one. But The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air made the song cool when Carlton (Alfonso Ribeiro) busted a move to the tune of “It’s Not Unusual.”

Alfonso made magic happen when his “that white” black character gave the most white dance possible, sparking a trend we still enjoy three decades later.

You give a little snap of the fingers and a swing of the arms. A sway of the hips and a shift of the feet.

Alfonso Ribeiro does the Carlton dance on Dancing with the Stars for the show finale
(BBC Studios/YouTube Screenshot)

Add a big grin and a goofy head bob, and you’ve got The Carlton. Get up and give it a go! It’s tons of fun.

Ribeiro isn’t just a dancing fool on Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. He’s also not only starred on but totally kicked ass and won Season 19 of Dancing with the Stars in 2014.

He and partner Witney Carson stole the show with a voracious Cha Cha Cha.

Carlton must have gotten his rad dance moves from his mom, cause Aunt Vi had some funk of her own!

Mel – Virgin River

Mel Spots the Wildfire - Virgin River Season 5 Episode 4
(Netflix)

Mel Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge) traded a life in the big city for the slower pace of Virgin River, California.

She became a nurse practitioner at the practice of Vernon Mullins, although it took a few seasons before he really saw her as an equal partner.

The move was a desperate effort to escape the pain of losing her fiance, Mark, and her miscarriage.

Whenever Mel needed to relax or let go of stress, she would put on music and dance her feelings away.

And if she was lucky enough to have her hunky new partner Jack around, she tried to make it a family affair. But don’t expect to see her getting funky without wanton when she has eyes on her.

Her dance therapy is a solo affair, done in the privacy of her quaint cabin in the woods rather than on the town dance floor.

Jess Day – The New Girl

Trying To Destress - New Girl
(FOX)

New Girl captured the quirky platonic relationship between opposite genders: Jess Day (Zooey Deschanel) and her male roommates Winston, Schmidt, Nick, and Coach (on random).

After catching her boyfriend cheating, Jessica moves into an empty room with Nick, Winston (who just returned from Latvia as a pro basketball player), and white-collar narcissist Winston Schmidt (Max Greenfield from The Neighborhood).

Day is an eccentric elementary school teacher obsessed with crafting and color. She often has less emotional maturity than other people in her twenties, which leads to problems with romantic relationships.

Related: Unforgettable Narcissists of the Small Screen

Jess’s zest for life and fun often leads to embarrassing yet endearing dance moments. While we wouldn’t give her an award for her skills, we would give her a participation trophy because she makes it look so fun.

No matter the occasion, Jess isn’t scared to spontaneously throw out a goofy dance move, often inspiring those around her to join in.

Cristina Yang – Grey’s Anatomy

Mer and Cristina Scene
(ABC/Danny Feld)

Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) will forever be the smartass, conceited, brilliant-minded doctor and best gal pal of Meredith Grey.

Yang captured our hearts at the beginning of Grey’s Anatomy, along with the OG crew of first years struggling to find their place at the hospital.

While she was serious and overly confident to the point of cruelty at work, when she was off-duty, we could expect Yang and Mer to rock around the house to work off all the stresses of being a doctor.

Fans loved the impromptu dance parties — living room style — that gave us a different view of Cristina’s personality. One of the great parts of the early seasons was seeing her deep connection to her best friend as they boogie down and become carefree.

Michael Scott – The Office

Michael with Pam - The Office
(NBC/Screenshot)

The mockumentary method of off-humor comedies like The Office fulfills a vacancy fans have available for TV niches.

Among the multiple procedurals, family dramas, and reality shows on TV, The Office gave us a unique touch. The show focused on a group of office workers throughout their daily lives.

Related: The Office Sequel Series Casts Domnhall Gleeson, Raises Questions About Whether This Show Should Exist

We saw them getting along, fighting, having romantic entanglements, and lots of inappropriate behavior. None of their actions would actually last in the real world, which might be why we love it so much as fiction.

Perhaps the most inappropriate worker is the boss, Michael Scott, played by the talented Steve Carell. Scott often uses his love of dancing to lighten the mood, celebrate a milestone, or impress his staff.

Michael Scott Says No - The Office
(NBCUniversal/Peacock Screenshot)

His awkward dance moves are full of commitment and enthusiasm, even if there’s zero skill or coordination.

Perhaps the most memorable Scott dancing event was his hilariously cringeworthy Scarn dance, part of his self-made movie, “Threat Level Midnight.”

Throughout his time on The Office, Scott struggled to connect with his colleagues. He was overly concerned about being liked and often made misguided efforts to do it.

Elaine Benes – Seinfeld

Elaine Benes stares at Seinfeld as they have a conversation in the kitchen.
(NBC/YouTube Screenshot)

Julia Louis-Dreyfus portrays the awful dancer Elaine Benes in the family comedy Seinfeld. If white boys can’t jump, white women can’t dance. At least this white woman couldn’t.

But it was hilarious to watch her unique and horrible dancing routine of erratic arm gestures and uncontrolled kicks.

Her failed, flailing dance moves are legendary in TV history, providing endless and timeless amusement to Seinfeld fans across the generations.

Related: Does the Death of Syndicated Reruns Mean the End of Catchphrases and Cult Shows?

The complete clusterfluck of her dance moves, fully displayed in “The Little Kicks,” is iconic. It encourages viewers to let loose and have fun.

Despite the criticisms of hearing that her dancing is a “full-bodied dry heave set to music,” Elaine unapologetically gets down with her bad self whenever the mood strikes.

Tina Belcher – Bob’s Burgers

Tina with Jeff The Ghost - Bob's Burgers Season 5 Episode 2
(FOX/Michael Stack)

Tina Belcher is the eldest daughter of the Belcher family, beloved for her awkwardness and proneness to daydreaming.

Above all else, Tina (voiced by Dan Mintz) loves to dance like no one is watching, even when they are.

She never lets an opportunity pass without breaking out into her signature dance, the “butt shaker” when she’s lost in her thoughts or thinking of a crush.

Her quirky, heartfelt dance moves reflect her character’s unique personality as she struggles with the awkward adolescent transition.

She becomes a standout character on Bob’s Burgers for her unwavering confidence and dance obsession.

Poussey Washington – Orange is the New Black

Poussey Destroys Inventory

Samira Wiley will forever be associated with the LBGTQ prison comedy Orange is the New Black for her role as Poussey Washington.

Poussey is known in the women’s prison for her vibrant spirit and for her deep love of dancing.

Throughout the show, we see numerous flashbacks and scenes in prison where Washington dances around joyfully.

She’s a shining light of happiness in a grim, depressing place with little color or personality. Everyone in the place is negative and miserable.

Every dance scene shows Poussey’s inner joy and strength in the face of her character’s trials, and she becomes an endearing, memorable member of the show.

Several people from the P&R show had a thing for dancing, making a comedic show that much more entertaining.

First, April Ludgate was known for her brazen sarcasm and deadpan humor. But despite her hard edges, April (Aubrey Plaza) often exhibits cutting loose with enthusiastic dancing.

Her best dance scene happened with Andy Dwyer to the tune of “Time After Time.” Fans loved seeing the pure joy from her core when her guard came down on those rare occasions.

It gave us the perfect balance of contrast to display her personality’s complexity and the warmth buried within.

Another dancing character from P&R is Tom Haverford. Aziz Ansari is the man behind the ambitious, self-proclaimed “baller” of the show with the best fashion.

He never skips an opportunity to rock the dance floor, especially at a club where he can get attention for his flashy, over-the-top dance scenes.

His enthusiasm for dance and his over-exaggerated self-confidence means he’s not scared to show up and show out with hilarious moves.

The most notable episode for Tom’s larger-than-life dance routines is best summed up with the episode “Snake Juice.”

And finally, Rob Lowe‘s character, Chris Traeger, rounds out the dancers on the Parks and Rec crew.

As a health-conscious city manager, Chris has a love of life that often encompasses his passion for dancing. We often see his energetic, upbeat dance moves at personal celebrations and city events.

Chris has relentless optimism, exuding constant positive vibes and fun, uplifting dance scenes that infect those around him with happy energy and a love of life.

The best mystery shows walk a fine line between cases that keep us guessing but also feel somewhat solvable.

Sometimes, we want to see if we can solve the mysteries before the protagonists do, but other times, we just want to sit back and marvel at their brilliance.

Either way, according to our TV Fanatic team, here are some of the best shows to watch if you like solving mysteries.

Lieutenant Columbo Solves a Case - NBC/Peacock Promo Screenshot
(NBC/Screenshot)

Columbo (Tubi)

Columbo (1971-1978 and 1989-2003) featured the quintessential American gumshoe of the same name, played by Peter Falk.

Few people can make an old rumpled coat and a cigar an iconic look, but actor Peter Falk pulled it off beautifully, and the show became a classic detective series.

There was no disputing the mild-mannered detective was at the top of his deduction game, and he stayed that way through several decades of TV episodes and movies, albeit sporadically aired, with all of us along for the ride.

Related: 17 Shows That Achieved Unprecedented Success

One thing that made the series one of the best mystery shows was its use of a “howcatchem” approach. It usually revealed who committed the crime early and followed Columbo as he found a way to catch the culprit. It was nontraditional, but it was still intriguing.

The mystery was trying to figure out how Columbo’s mind worked, what made him connect the dots the way he did, and why he asked certain questions along the way. Each episode was a real brain teaser in a unique format.

The series also doesn’t tell us outright what Columbo’s first name is, so that’s a bonus mystery to try to solve as we watch.

Perry Mason always gets his man. NBC/MeTV Promo Screenshot

Perry Mason (Freevee)

Another detective series that ran somewhat sporadically was Perry Mason (1957-1966 and 1985-1995) starring Raymond Burr.

The character was created by novelist Erle Stanley Gardner originally, and Burr was not the first to play Mason. Radio and film adaptations came before.

Nevertheless, Burr is the one most people think of when they picture Perry Mason because he played the iconic lawyer so well and for so long.

He first starred on the 1957 — 1966 CBS series and then reprised the role for the NBC Perry Mason movies. Although, he only appeared in 26 of the 30 films before passing away in 1993.

The great thing about the Perry Mason series and movies is that they were quite detailed, and viewers could potentially solve the mysteries the same way Perry and his friends did.

The main cast of Matlock, season 1
(Viacom)

Matlock (Pluto)

Andy Griffith, as Ben Matlock on the original Matlock (1986-1995, brought another iconic TV detective to life.

With his sweet southern nature and quick thinking, Matlock could solve any crime.

It was an added bonus that he wasn’t just a detective but an attorney, so we got to see him get the bad guys convicted Perry Mason-style, bringing back the Raymond Burr vibes.

The show is a favorite of many mystery buffs, myself included, but there is some debate over how easy its mysteries are to solve.

Related: Nine Mysteries We Should Have Been Able to Solve

Some fans claim they are solvable with good deductive reasoning skills.

Others think that’s a stretch and that many solutions are impossible to know until the end.

You can judge for yourself when you watch it, and then check out the Matlock reboot coming in fall 2024.

Jessica Fletcher always has a clue. - CBS/Hallmark Mysteries Promo Screenshot

Murder, She Wrote (Roku)

Murder, She Wrote (1984-1996) was an absolute juggernaut for CBS.

The late Dame Angela Lansbury played former school teacher Jessica Beatrice (J.B.) From the fictional picturesque town of Cabot Cove, Maine, Jessica became a mystery writer and crime solver.

She was a person you’d expect to see baking cookies in her kitchen and was on the town’s refreshment committee in the premiere episode.

Yet, within that first hour, we all quickly discovered she wasn’t just a cookie baker but a sharp cookie herself, like these strong female characters.

In the days before smartphones and other newfangled gadgets, she used her eyes, ears, and common sense to puzzle things through, allowing us, as viewers, to do the same.

Little clues like shaving cream, binoculars, buttons, and outfit changes helped her and us identify the guilty parties, making Murder, She Wrote always a fun watch.

Adrian Monk works a case on Monk. - USA Trailer Screenshot
(USA/Screenshot)

Monk (Netflix)

To this day, Monk (Tony Shalhoub) is everyone’s favorite “defective detective,” but he’s so much more than that.

Monk (2002-2009) represents a turning point in television history.

It was the first major mystery show to feature a character with neurodiverse characteristics, and Adrian Monk quickly became one of the most loved TV characters ever.

Related: How Monk Paved the Way For Neurodiverse Characters on TV

With his OCD, germaphobia, and lack of social skills, he was immediately awkwardly endearing to those of us who love mysteries.

Monk’s superpower was the ability to be grossed out and totally tuned in at the same time, which is what made the show so fun.

We all became attached not only to each mystery but also to watching how Monk got through daily life between solving the crimes.

Shawn and Gus sit and talk about a case at the police station. USA Promo Screenshot
(USA/Screenshot)

Psych (Peacock)

What do you get when you combine a pharmaceutical salesman, a fake psychic, and the Santa Barbara Police Department?

The answer is Psych (2006-2014), which originally aired on USA and received the highest ratings of all basic cable premieres that year.

Every episode features Shawn Spencer (James Roday Rodriguez) and his best friend, Gus (Dulé Hill), using Shawn’s photographic memory and their observational powers to solve crimes while pulling one over on Jules, Lassie, and the rest of the SBPD.

The pair of best buddies often argued but always came together when it counted, including in three movies that followed the series.

If finding all the clues along with Shawn and Gus isn’t enough fun for you, you can also watch for pineapples and pineapple references hidden in every episode.

House Listens
(FOX)

House

We can’t talk about the best mystery shows without discussing at least one show about medical mysteries.

Originally called House M.D., but better known simply as House (2004-2012), this drama delves into medical mysteries from the perspective of one of the most unique characters ever created.

Dr. Gregory House is a jerk. There’s no way around that, but he’s a brilliant jerk.

Related: 21 Characters Who Are Just Jerks

He is allowed to get away with unethical choices and abuse of prescription medication because the hospital needs his mind to solve some of the most difficult medical mysteries in the world.

The mysteries don’t stop with the medical cases.

Often, House also has to deal with the mysteries behind his own actions and the actions of the other doctors in his charge.

House is abrasive, often rude, and almost always far too blunt, but he sucks us in because we all want to see how he’ll solve the next medical puzzle.

The Gang Sitting Together - Riverdale CW Promo Screenshot
(CW/Screenshot)

Riverdale (Netflix)

Riverdale (2017-2023) doesn’t pull any punches regarding being mysterious.

The whole thing starts with the death of local high schooler Jason Blossom and gets more intriguing with each passing episode.

As his death, initially thought to be an accident, is gradually determined to be a murder, other Riverdale teens find themselves working as investigators.

Together, they work to uncover not only who killed Jason and why but also the mysteries behind many other strange events and interactions between people in town.

Based loosely on the Archie Comics series, the characters are familiar and not at the same time because the show is a lot darker and edgier than the comics ever were, which is what’s so great about it.

The Drew Crew - Nancy Drew Season 4 Episode 13
(Colin Bentley / The CW)

Nancy Drew (Max)

Taking a page from Riverdale’s book, the CW’s Nancy Drew (2019-2023) definitely brought the spook factor.

Based on the classic teen mystery characters created by author Carolyn Keene, this version portrays the adventures of Nancy and her Drew Crew like never before.

They’ve got more depth, more spunk, and a whole lot more problems to solve, often of the supernatural variety.

Related: 19 Inspiring TV Characters We Admire

It’s great to watch them try to puzzle out the mysteries of the fictional town of Horseshoe Bay.

How did certain people die? Who is related to each other? Why is the town a supernatural hotspot?

Those are just some of the mysteries, and then there’s the mystery of who Nancy Drew herself really is, which definitely threw us for a loop.

Tyler and Kinsey stand in the kitchen. - Netflix Trailer Screenshot
(Netflix/Screenshot)

Locke & Key (Netflix)

Based on the comic book series of the same name, Locke & Key (2020-2022) was an entirely too short-lived Netflix series.

It followed the adventures of the Locke family and brought together elements of fantasy, horror, drama, and mystery.

After the family patriarch’s death, his wife decided to move with her three kids into her husband’s former familial home.

The kids then start finding mysterious keys all over the house.

What does each key do? Who created the keys? Why are the kids in charge of protecting them, and how can they stop them from falling into the wrong hands?

Those are just some of the many intriguing mysteries and storylines seamlessly entwined throughout the show’s three-season run.

Add to that elements of teleportation, time travel, ghostly encounters, and more, and it’s easy to see why the series was a hit with Netflix viewers.

Only Murders In The Building - Trio with Turkey Season 1 Episode 4
(Hulu)

Only Murders in the Building (Hulu)

A big hit for Hulu, Only Murders in the Building (2021-Present) takes a unique mystery-solving approach.

Three strangers with true crime obsessions live in the same large apartment building and suddenly find themselves in the middle of a murder investigation.

The strangers are played by Selena Gomez, Martin Short, and Steve Martin, the latter of whom also co-created the series.

Related: Lifetime True Crime Movies That Hit the Mark

They use their love of true crime to try to solve the murder (and subsequent murders) themselves.

Throughout the process, they also had the bright idea of broadcasting their investigations on a podcast that quickly gained a following.

The balance of humor and mystery is refreshingly different, and the series even has one of the most memorable TV opening title sequences.

Entering Twin Peaks Population Sign - Showtime Promo Screenshot

Twin Peaks (Paramount+)

Even the tagline for Twin Peaks (1990-1991) was intriguing enough to captivate audiences: Who Killed Laura Palmer?

The cult classic series from the 90s (which was revived in 2017 for a third season) kicks off with a massive mystery: the shocking murder of a beautiful and popular teenage girl in a small town.

The FBI sends in reinforcements in the form of Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLaughlin) to help the local sheriff’s department get to the bottom of the brutal crime.

David Lynch’s unique storytelling, while often unsettling, provided fans with a dark and mystifying masterpiece.

The show left us with more questions than answers most of the time, but that’s why we loved it.

At High School - Stranger Things Season 4 Episode 2
(Netflix)

Stranger Things (Netflix)

Who doesn’t love a good dose of nostalgia with their mysteries?

Stranger Things (2016-2025) transports you back to the 80s, where long summer bike rides and marathon Dungeons & Dragons tournaments rule, and parents drool.

There’s something sinister going on in town, and it’s up to a group of kids, a grumpy drunk sheriff, and a single mom who everyone thinks is nuts to find out what’s going on.

Related: 13 Television Characters With Evil in Their Veins

There are tons of little clues building up to every climax on Stranger Things, so the audience can participate by following along and guessing what’s going on.

Can you solve the mystery? If so, great, but if not, you can at least enjoy the trip back in time to the days before technology took over.

It's Not A Game Anymore - Sherlock Season 4 Episode 3
(BBC (Sherlock Official Facebook Page))

Sherlock (Hulu)

Sherlock (2010-2017) is a British series originally broadcast on BBC and also broadcast in the United States on PBS.

Now available to stream on Hulu, the captivating series based on the beloved fictional detective creation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is widely regarded as one of the best Sherlock Holmes shows produced so far.

It’s easy to get lost in the Sherlock world, with mind-blowing deductions and exhilarating chases.

Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as Dr. John Watson take us on some exhilarating adventures and truly test our brain power.

This modern twist on the classic detective tale is packed with clever writing, gripping mysteries, and unforgettable characters.

Laboratory Visit - Elementary Season 7 Episode 11
(CBS/Best Possible Screen Grab)

Elementary (Hulu)

If watching Sherlock doesn’t scratch your Sherlock Holmes itch enough, the solution is, as Holmes would say, elementary. Just add Elementary (2012-2019) to your viewing list.

In this modern version of the classic detecting duo of Holmes and Watson, Holmes is played by Jonny Lee Miller, and Lucy Liu plays the reimagined female Watson.

Another major change on Elementary is that the pair don’t solve mysteries in London, England. Instead, they’re based in New York City.

Related: 23 Characters Who Prove That the Mind is the Best Weapon

It’s refreshing to watch a new take on characters we’ve all known and loved for many years.

The different setting, gender dynamics, and modern feel bring Holmes and Watson off the page and into present-day life, which any Sherlock Holmes fan will likely enjoy.

At the morgue - CSI: Vegas Season 2 Episode 21
(CBS Promo (Screenshot))

The Entire CSI Franchise (Paramount+)

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation became a massive phenomenon during its original 2000-2015 run.

It’s the first series that introduced us to crime procedurals and solving the crime of the week.

While they were gruesome, many episodes played out like a whodunit murder mystery, with Gil Grissom (William Peterson), Sara Sidle (Jorja Fox), and Catherine Willows (Marg Helgenberger) leading the cast.

Besides weekly mysteries, CSI specialized in season-long arcs, particularly the Minature Killer storyline, which affected both Grissom and Sara.

CSI has spawned several spinoff shows, including CSI: Vegas, which was canceled in 2024.

However, according to Deadline, a new CSI series is supposedly in the works, and if it’s anything like the last several, we’re dying to see it.

Ride-Share Death - NCIS
(CBS/HIGHEST QUALITY SCREENGRAB AVAILABLE)

The Entire NCIS Franchise (Paramount+)

In 2003, three years after the first CSI premiered, NCIS (Naval Crime Scene Investigative Services) kicked off, and its creators have never looked back.

The show about Navy investigators solving crimes became incredibly popular, largely thanks to its eclectic original cast, which included Pauley Perette as the goth-dressing forensics expert, Abby and David McCallum as medical examiner Donald “Ducky” Mallard.

Related: NCIS Old vs. New — Which Cast Reigns Supreme?

Early episodes, like the infamous NCIS Season 2 Episode 13: The Meat Puzzle, let us know the show was going to explore the worst humanity was capable of.

However, the team also always showed us the best of what humanity could do, as they pulled together to solve each crime and give navy members and their families a sense of closure.

The original show is still going strong, with season 22 premiering in October 2024; four spinoffs have been added to the franchise over the years, and a fifth, NCIS: Tony & Ziva, started filming in 2024.

Hands Up - Will Trent Season 2 Episode 7
(ABC Promo Screenshot)

Will Trent (Hulu)

Will Trent (2023-present) became a fast success since the series uses a dyslexic Georgia Bureau of Investigations (GBI) agent to solve cases.

The weekly mysteries on Will Trent vary from kidnappings to murders, and it is entertaining to watch the GBI and Atlanta Police Department (APD) join forces to solve these cases.

During Season 2, more of the cases touched the team’s personal lives, and there were some longer mystery arcs.

They included solving who was stalking Amanda, deciphering why Will was having visions of his past and how it affected a current case, and why there was a serial killer killing sex predators.

Rust Cohle Looking Frustrated - True Detective
(HBO/Screenshot)

True Detective (Max)

True Detective (2014-present) allows viewers to dive into a dark, atmospheric world, where each season brings a fresh, nail-biting mystery.

The first season of True Detective, starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, is a masterclass in storytelling with its intricate plot and intense character drama. The two make quite a memorable pair.

Viewers couldn’t help but get sucked in by their riveting portrayals of Rust and Marty.

The latest season, starring Jodie Foster and Kali Rees, builds on the previous season while increasing the uneasiness in Alaska’s brutal cold darkness.

Elsbeth and Blanke Work Together - Elsbeth Season 1 Episode 1: Pilot
(CBS (Promo Screenshot))

Elsbeth (Paramount+)

Elsbeth Tascioni (Carrie Preston), a unique, colorful attorney with a shrewd eye for details, is the main character on Elsbeth (2024 -present).

Intended to supervise the NYPD to ensure proper conduct, Tascioni shares her talents with the police to solve multiple cases.

Known for her bright, clashing clothing, eccentric hats, and carrying more bags than anyone needs, Elsbeth keeps the police honest and on their toes.

She becomes endearing to everyone except the criminals she helps catch.

The Devil is presented in an entirely different light on Lucifer (2016-2021).

Here's who we're inviting to our 4th of July party!

Richie – The Bear

Richie at a Table - The Bear
(Courtesy of FX)

Right off the bat, Richie understands the concept of "play cousin" so well that he'd literally fit right in because of that alone.

He's brash and uncouth, sure, but he's also just a damn good time and pure entertainment.

He can fit into any environment and have some of the best conversations or debates about movies, music, and books, all the while making fun of people for their hot dog condiments.

Whether we get off the books Richie, who knows how to party with the best of him, or Professional Richie, who knows how to organize the event and ensure that everything runs smoothly, you're getting the best of Richie! (Jasmine Blu)

Bobby Nash – 9-1-1

Cruise Bobby - 9-1-1 Season 7 Episode 1
(Disney/Chris Willard)

Captain Bobby Nash is both the leader at the 118 and the resident chef.

Known for whipping up one hell of a meal for his team, Bobby’s also known at home for manning the grill whenever there’s a party.

Considering that neither the team nor his family ever has any complaints about his talents in the kitchen, he’s the #1 person you want to call to marinate the meat and make sure everything is cooked to perfection at the 4th of July barbecue! (Whitney Evans)

Beth Dutton – Yellowstone

Beth Stays Classy - Yellowstone Season 5 Episode 1

Beth's fierce and unapologetic attitude would bring a bold and fiery energy to the party.

The Yellowstone favorite's sharp wit and take-no-prisoners approach to life would make for some intense and interesting conversations.

Beth may be intense, but when it comes to letting her hair down, she’s rarely outmatched. (Carissa Pavlica)

Clark Kent/Superman – Your Pick!

Any Clark or Superman will do, but I've always been most partial to Dean Cain from Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman myself.

Superman has always represented an American protector who stands for "truth, justice, and the American way."

If you watch The Way Home, you know the likelihood that Alice may disappear in the middle of the celebration or return to it later inexplicably soaking wet is high.

However, Alice loves a good social event and she gets along with pretty much everyone.

She may even pull out the guitar and give us a little performance. (Jasmine Blu)

King Alfred – The Last Kingdom

King Alfred - The Last Kingdom
(Netflix (Screenshot))

I love history, especially the history of England, from the Celts and the Roman takeover all the way through to the end of the Tudor line. My choice would be King Alfred from The Last Kingdom.

From a historical standpoint, I’d want to know more details about several of the battles that took place during his reign, and more about the relationship between Wessex and Mercia.

From the fictional standpoint, I’d want to understand the logic of placing so much trust in the priests around him and so little in Uhtred despite Uhtred coming through for him time and time again.

It has absolutely nothing to do with Independence Day and the July 4 celebration, but, in its own way, England was coming together as a country, much like America would do centuries later. It took politics, power, and war for both.

Not very fun for a party, but I’m done with those days unless there’s some single malt Scotch in the house, preferably a 14-year Glenlivet! (Thomas Godwin)

Lucifer Morningstar – Lucifer

Who is He? - Lucifer Season 3 Episode 26
(Fox)

For Lucifer, partying is a way of life. He’s willing to put all seriousness on the back burner to entertain others.

He’s quick on his feet and always has a sarcastic quip to keep the conversation going.

Even better, he’s an ace on the piano and a singer to boot. He can be our entertainment! (Carissa Pavlica)

Leon Black – Curb Your Enthusiasm

He is absolutely hilarious, knows how to have a good time, calls it as he sees it, and definitely has an abundance of entertaining stories worth hearing. (Eve Pierpont)

Ted Lasso – Ted Lasso

Ted on the Pitch - Ted Lasso Season 2 Episode 8
(Apple TV+)

Ted Lasso's infectious positivity and charm would surely brighten up any gathering.

His ability to connect with people and create a sense of camaraderie would make the party feel inclusive and joyous.

He’s at his best when spirits are high, and we’d like to think he’d get as much from the party as he would give. (Carissa Pavlica)

Barney Gumble – The Simpsons

An outdoor party in the middle of summer? Yeah, I’m not worrying about the scintillating conversation and witty bon mots. I want guests who are there to rage!

And when you invite Barney Gumble, you’re inviting a guy who’s sure to show up with a case of Duff and leave with a lampshade on his head.

We don’t often get to see the auteur behind Pukahontas blackout in environments other than Moe’s Tavern, so a backyard barbecue could make for an interesting change of pace.

Are TV showrunners giving the audience too much power? If audience feedback is reshaping the story on screen, what's the point of creative storytelling?

The post How Much Should Showrunners Rely on Audience Reaction For Their Storytelling? appeared first on TV Fanatic.

Storytelling has been a facet of social behavior since the days of fingerpainting on dimly lit cavern walls.

Hopefully, the grunting, scratching cave audience didn't bludgeon the artist to death with makeshift clubs when a bad story resulted.

Modern fans can get downright mean over aspects of their favorite series.

Sometimes, the showrunners acknowledge the outcry — sometimes, they don't.

Netflix's The Witcher and Amazon Prime's Rings of Power are perfect examples of what happens when writers ignore the fans, with both seeing a drastic drop in viewership.

The Rings of Power ended the season with only a third of its original audience.

Then again, for every failure, there is a success story.

For the most part, Shogun stuck to the books and never had to face the wrath of the fans.

It doesn't take much to reason the rest of the way through this balancing act, with millions of dollars often on the line.

The Rise of Fan Power

When soap operas hit the scene in the 1970s, modern-day TV storytelling began to take shape.

These shows have multiple plots that take place over several episodes.

Fans were less influential, and ratings, along with critic reviews, were the only indicators of a show's success.

There was no such thing as going viral, what with only a mailbox and a rotary telephone to communicate with.

The Age of Nostalgia: Why Young Audiences Are Seeking Out Old TV

Then came the internet and social media, derailing the typified relationship between showrunners and fans.

Before, fans voted for their favorite shows by viewing them.

Now, a small departure from the source material is enough to burn down the internet, infecting the algorithms and ginning up enough animosity to generate major entertainment news headlines.

Sometimes, the showrunners and crew have responded with angst, feeding the beast and growing the moment's chaos.

If the townsfolk are marching on Frankenstein's creator, it's best to avoid handing out additional pitchforks and torches.

However, there are instances where fan reactions have changed things for the better.

The Expanse was a dead horse, done and finished well before the creative vision behind it was through. As a Sci-Fi original, it was on the chopping block for cancelation.

The Blue Bloods Cancellation Is Still Infuriating: Will Fans Be Consoled by a Satisfying Conclusion?

Fortunately, the outrage was enough to capture the attention of Amazon's top brass.

The Expanse finished its run on Prime, which came with a happy infusion of money from a studio that could afford it.

Similar scenarios played out with the Family Guy, Lucifer, Veronica Mars, and even the original Star Trek (it took a lot of letter writing, stamps, and runs through the post office).

Again, we see the formulation of a balancing act somewhere between the rage of disillusioned fans and the success stories of some of TV's most popular franchises.

The Showrunner's Dilemma

Creative integrity is the beating heart and soul of the storyteller.

So, how to balance creativity with fan appeasement? For starters, no one will ever appease all of the fans.

There will always be that boisterous bunch of names, followed by a random string of numbers, in various X (Twitter) feeds.

That doesn't mean showrunners should eschew the fans altogether.

Deep Blue Eyes - Game of Thrones
(HBO (Screenshot))

The darkest episode in X-Files history was "Home", which was pulled after brutal fan reactions, though you can still watch it today if you purchase the show or catch it on a streaming platform.

Memorable TV Relationships That Were Worth The Wait

Roseanne redirected its focus after fan backlash over the sitcom leaned away from the Connor family and toward Steve Urkel.

Due to negative fan response, Wil Wheaton's character, Wesley Crusher, was written out of Star Trek: TNG.

On the flip side, Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead both avoided capitulation and went on to complete their respective series' as originally envisioned by the showrunners.

It's well-known that narrative complexity, coherence, and complex characters make a show great.

Showrunners must balance their creative vision with fan response while not corrupting the former in favor of the latter.

Creative Storytelling in a Changing Landscape

The entertainment industry is marching headlong into the waiting arms of the reboot, remake, and adaptation.

Originalism is decreasing across the board. There are many reasons behind this, but suffice it to say, there's no coming back until it's played out.

There is a problem and an advantage with this.

The advantage is the built-in fan base. The problem is the built-in fan base. Many showrunners are learning this the hard way.

Some deviations from the source material, especially when translating books to film, are understandable, even if they cause the occasional grumble.

However, fans will not tolerate a wholesale abandonment of the source material.

Rick Is Determined - The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live Season 1 Episode 4
(AMC)

This leaves the showrunners with a simple choice:

They can take enormous liberty with the material, deviating in favor of personal, creative inspiration, or bow to the whims of the fan base.

The choice is simple, while the balance is complicated.

A united fan base, wielding social media tools, can burn a project to the ground.

Westworld went from hero to zero thanks to the efforts to appease fans rather than retain the complex mystery of the first season.

Elsbeth Backlash: Has CBS' Lighthearted Murder Mystery Lost Its Way Already?

Some showrunners, instead of listening to fans or embracing their own vision, actively attacked fans, even incorporating their ambivalence towards the fans into their shows.

The polar opposite approaches clearly do not work, especially with existing and highly popular source material.

The consequences of audience-driven storytelling are just as dire as that of ignoring the fan base altogether.

Westworld Poster

Preserving Balance and the Unpredictability of Stories

Yes, it's a tall order. It's not easy to fully embrace one's creative imagination and balance it against lofty fan expectations.

It's perfectly understandable to ignore that small segment of bots and trolls that will never be satisfied.

On the other hand, ignoring the entire fanbase is done at the peril of the showrunner's sanity and project.

It's enough to make one wish we could go back to the days of Lost and The Sopranos.

Fans love nothing more than a huge mystery, especially one that's rife with multiple subplots and sensible cliffhangers.

Cliffhangers That Made Our Jaws Drop to The Floor

Showrunners who give the audience too much power risk taking the path of Westworld.

It's much easier to create a masterpiece and lightly incorporate audience feedback.

The Future is Past - Outlander
(Courtesy of Starz (Teaser Screenshot))

These adaptations, however, are more difficult.

Showrunners tasked with adapting a popular IP should look to Shogun, Dune, and Outlander.

It wouldn't hurt to study some of the classic adaptations, like Roots, Lonesome Dove, and even 1967's The Forsyte Saga.

Peter Jackson's original Lord of the Rings trilogy didn't do so well because it was a carbon copy of the books.

It did well because it fully embraced Tolkien's spirit, only making narrative changes where it made sense for the film.

These gems from yesterday contain valuable lessons; lessons showrunners would do well to learn and incorporate into their own sagas.

What's your opinion? Should showrunners seek a happy medium, cast aside fan reactions, or wholly embrace them?

The end is nigh for Lucifer, which has cheated death on countless occasions.

Netflix on Tuesday dropped the first official trailer for Lucifer Season Season 6, and it's good!

Here's the official logline from Netflix:

End of Days on Lucifer
(Netflix)

This is it, the final season of Lucifer. For real this time. The devil himself has become God… almost.

Why is he hesitating?

And as the world starts to unravel without a God, what will he do in response?

Amenadiel's Home - Lucifer Season 5 Episode 5
(Netflix)

Join us as we say a bittersweet goodbye to Lucifer, Chloe, Amenadiel, Maze, Linda, Ella and Dan. Bring tissues.

The trailer teases Lucifer and Chloe in a lot of trouble when they are witnesses to a murder.

Lucifer wants to become a God in the footage, which sets up the last hurrah very well.

How will his plan change things for everyone going forward?

Lucifer and Trixie Season 5 Episode 4

We also get to see the arrival of a frog, a rebellious angel, and so much more.

During the recent Comic-Con @ Home panel, series star Tom Ellis and executive producers Joe Henderson and Ildy Modrovich spoke about previous events, including the death of Dan, played by Kevin Alejandro.

“Kevin Alejandro actually pitched us him dying because he’s like, ‘It’s the last season, and everyone has grown to love this character."

We were in early goings-on and it sort of stuck with us as we went on. So it’s Kevin’s fault, really,” Henderson said.

Lucifer vs Maze Season 5 Episode 8
(Netflix)

Added Modrovich, “Yeah, he said he wants to go out in a fiery blaze of glory, so he did.”

They also said that Lucifer would be heavily involved with cases during the final season.

“Oh, I think it’s in his DNA now,” Ellis explained.

“There may be the odd thing to solve, but he’s got a lot of mysteries to solve, to be honest, in Season 6.”

Added moderator Luke Cook, “Lucifer had a lot of growing up to do before becoming God, and he was really wrestling with the pain in his life and the pain of other people’s lives watching Dan die. Is he going to continue this maturation, or is he going to be charming and immature?”

Check out the final season trailer below, and be sure to stream the last-ever episodes when they drop September 10.

Well-known for bringing to life iconic characters on Van Helsing, Lucifer, & Battlestar Galactica, Tricia Helfer talks about turning her own dreams into reality.

The post TV Goddess and Down-To-Earth Angel: Tricia Helfer Discusses Her Missions On-Screen and Off appeared first on TV Fanatic.

]]>
Since making her riveting entrance as the Number Six Cylon on Ronald D. Moore's rebooted Battlestar Galactica series in 2003, Tricia Helfer has made portraying powerful, complex, and capable women her trademark.

Whether as a high-powered lawyer (Alex Clark, The Firm), or a Texas Ranger (Molly Parker, Killer Women), or a once-super-powered special agent (Angela Lange, Powers), Helfer never fails to create characters with depth and nuance.

What is even more impressive is her ability to portray multiple versions of a character. For example, as Number Six on BSG, she played no fewer than five notable variants to her central "Caprica-Six" persona.

Caprica Six
(Syfy/Justin Stephens)

More recently, she has once again demonstrated her versatility by first playing Mom/Goddess and then the very mortal Charlotte on Lucifer and both Dracula and the pre-Dracula Olivia on Syfy's Van Helsing.

Speaking with TV Fanatic by phone from her home in Los Angeles, Helfer is circumspect about this pattern of multiple characters she has been called upon to create and how she approaches the challenge.

"I keep finding myself in these situations. With all three of [these roles], I actually didn't know, signing on, that I was going to be playing multiple characters.

"With Lucifer, I was just signed on to play Mom, the Goddess, in the second season. And then they extended and did the Charlotte storyline the next year. But originally, I was only booked for one season, so I had no idea.

Supreme Goddess - Lucifer
(Brendan Meadows/Fox)

"And it was the same with Van Helsing. I was on to play Dracula, and then I was psyched to hear that we were going to do the Slovakia episode and do Olivia and Dracula's backstory and everything.

"Even with Battlestar, I mean I had an inkling, but I didn't really know to the extent that it was going to be.

"I think in terms of strategies, I just take each situation and treat it individually.

"With the Sixes, to me, I likened it to the idea of identical twins that were raised separately or who have a lot of similarities but have their own soul and ideas on things and what their mission is.

Faces of Six
(Syfy)

"What their job was and how much interaction they had with humans affected their outlook and what was happening. So each situation is different.

"With The Goddess and Charlotte, Charlotte was coming out of a four-month blackout, basically. Not knowing what had happened to her.

"We joked it was like a four-month vodka blackout. [She had] absolutely no clue what happened, and she just kind of wakes up, is having these horrendous nightmares, and her life has fallen apart.

"For a very strong-minded woman, the fact that she may be having a mental breakdown or something — which is all she can attribute it to at that point before she knows the truth — is one of the worst things that can happen to her, so she's trying to hide the fact and keep going."

Shirley Monroe - Lucifer Season 5 Episode 4
(Netflix)

How does Helfer go about creating distinct and individualized characters when playing these roles?

"I certainly try to find the differences of how they would physically be. With Olivia and Dracula, Dracula was very shoulders back, powerful moves with purpose.

"And while Olivia was still a countess — she was still a very powerful woman in her time — she was the embodiment of good and kind and love. And so, I purposefully wanted to make her softer.

"I think I always try to find a little bit of vulnerability even in the omnipotent or powerful roles as well because I find it more interesting. And certainly, if playing a human, I try and find the different facets of what makes that person who they are.

"You say everything through your eyes. And the eyes are the windows to the soul. You're not just trying to say your lines; you're trying to embody who that person is.

"It actually works against me in real life, in auditions and things. If I'm having a bad day, I have a hard time leaving it in the room. I come into the room; people can see there's stuff going on behind my eyes. Maybe my eyes betray me sometimes too much.

"It can be a benefit in acting, sometimes, when you can portray a lot with your eyes of what the character's thinking. And with film and television, the camera gets right in there.

"So a lot of times, the less you do is more powerful because it comes through your eyes, what you're thinking, what a character's thinking. Not what Tricia's thinking, what the character's thinking."

Tricia Helfer Hands in Pockets - Lucifer
(Manfred Baumann)

Recognizing that film and television requires different skills from live theatre performance, has Helfer ever had the chance to "tread the boards," as they say?

"I actually have not. That's something I've not done. I would love to try it sometime. I can't say if I'd be good at it or not.

"My only experience has been in acting class back in 2000, 2001, before I started acting. That wasn't actually on a stage; it was just in the acting class, scene study.

"The closest thing I would have to it is multi-cam. When I've done some multi-cam work, you're in front of a live audience, so it has that audience feel at least. It's just not, obviously, a Broadway show.

"I definitely need to have that experience and try it. Certainly, this last year and a half have not been good for a newbie in that department trying to start out. Hopefully, I will get there one day."

Tricia Helfer B&W in White Close-Up - Lucifer
(Manfred Baumann)

Helfer's next television appearance will be on the dance-centered drama, Step Up: High Water as Fulton County's District Attorney, Erin Howard.

The series is based on the Step Up film series and began as a YouTube Red original, airing on the streaming platform for two seasons before being canceled.

Starz has since picked up the series for a third season and is currently airing the first two in anticipation of the as-yet-unknown third season premiere.

While her filming in Atlanta has wrapped, Helfer was still doing some ADR for the show when we spoke.

"I'm in the majority of the third season. I'm introduced in the first couple [episodes]. Enrique Murciano comes in as the defense attorney to my District Attorney, so we play off each other a lot."

And while we won't get the chance to see Helfer herself execute any dance numbers for the show, she can assure audience members that the change of network has not changed the focus of the series.

"There is a lot of dancing. They somehow managed during all the COVID protocols and everything to stay true to the show. A lot of dancing. A lot of performances. Returning fans will be very happy to know that that is still the main element of the show.

"But there is also an added storyline element of Sage's prosecution/murder trial. It's really a stage for Sage learning a lot about himself, what he's contributing, how he's growing in his life."

Helfer has long been a strong advocate for animal rights and supports many rescue organizations and anti-cruelty initiatives.

Since she grew up on a farm in Alberta, Canada, was her love of animals instilled by her upbringing?

"Yes and no. I can't really say yes because it was a grain farm. We had chickens, but they were for consumption. It wasn't a chicken farm, but my parents raised enough chickens to have eggs, and then they would slaughter the chickens and cut them up and eat them over the winter.

"So I wouldn't say my love of animals came from there. The love of the land and the love of nature certainly came from there.

Tricia Helfer Poolside - Lucifer
(Manfred Baumann)

"I have always loved animals. We had farm cats who I always felt a massive affinity to. It's just something that's grown over the years. I feel a real connection to animals, their innocence, and their love. Personally, I just don't think they should be eaten.

"I wouldn't necessarily say that it stemmed from the farm, per se. We didn't have horses. I grew up driving tractors and fixing farm machinery and things. And I had to partake in the slaughtering of the chickens, unfortunately.

"I perfected the scalding method. I couldn't be around when they were killed, and I couldn't cut them up. I perfected something where I could wear gloves and be on the periphery of it.

"Even back then, it bothered me. Even though I didn't know anything else at that point in my life."

Helfer's love of animals extends beyond monetary support and endorsements. Well beyond.

"I currently have seven cats. I have had many rescues, and I have had up to thirteen for many years.

"I've taken on some old cases, and I've lost to old age about five in the last couple years. I currently have seven. One old guy, I don't know how much longer I'll have with him."

Her commitment to caring for animals doesn't end with opening her home and heart to them. She has very recently taken steps to realizing a dream she's held close for many years.

"I haven't told anyone this yet, but I have already bought [a property], and I'm moving to the country. My goal is to rescue a few more animals. Maybe some goats and some cows and some pigs and things.

"That is my future over the next couple years. I'm going to be building my little, small farm sanctuary.

"I just closed on it last week while I was in Italy, filming. I'm still going to be traveling a lot for work, so it's going to take some time to put in some goat pens and things. I'm obviously not just going to be like, "Oh, bring me a bunch of animals!"

"I need to set up the infrastructure, find people who can help when I'm away.

"It's always been a dream of mine to have a sanctuary. I'm not a big people person. I would rather contribute to other, bigger sanctuaries and just have a small one myself, one that I can handle myself with one farm manager that I need.

"I'm not looking to have a big, massive thing but just a small, kind of little family one for me. That's my focus. It's always been my back-of-my-mind dream."

Helfer credits the time she had on her hands because of the COVID crisis with spurring her to take steps to make her dream a reality.

"Even though I was fortunate enough to do the fifth season of Van Helsing and do the third season of Step Up, I had a lot of time, and I just kind of went, 'Why am I waiting? I keep saying, In the future, in the future, in the future. Well, we don't know what's going to happen in the future. So, why am I waiting?'

"And that's sort of what prompted me. This place found me. I would never have guessed I would buy where I've bought, but I kind of feel like the goal was there, and then the right place found me."

When she and her fellow Van Helsing star, Aleks Paunovic, found themselves filming separate projects in Atlanta at the same time, they had the opportunity (while watching Van Helsing Season 5, of course) to discuss their respective passion projects.

In Paunovic's case, he is working towards establishing a film production studio in his hometown of Winnipeg, something he spoke about with great warmth when he chatted with TV Fanatic in March. Helfer has that same fervent enthusiasm about her sanctuary.

"Aleks and I are getting to the age where we're all starting to kind of go, 'Now's the time to do all those things we said we were gonna do!' "

So what was Helfer up to in Italy when she closed on her dream property? Hmm?

"I was in Italy, playing a very small, kind of cameo role in an independent film. Jeff Baena and Alison Brie wrote this comedy script, Spin Me Round.

"I'm playing such a silly, silly role. I will NOT tell you what I do in it because it will ruin the culmination of the movie.

"I get to play Fred Armisen's wife. I've always just loved him. I just had the best time. He's one of the sweetest, nicest, funniest people. I adore him, so I had a really nice time."

(Spin Me Round is still listed as in production and stars — in addition to Brie and Armisen — the likes of Aubrey Plaza, Zach Woods, Molly Shannon, and Tim Heidecker.)

It's not Helfer's first foray into comedy. She had a recurring role on Two and a Half Men; has voiced characters for animated comedies like Rick & Morty and Robot Chicken; and has appeared on Key & Peele, Community, and Franklin & Bash.

Through it all, she is grateful for her supportive fans, many who first knew her as Number Six but who have cheered whenever they've caught her in her many and varied roles since. In these difficult times, she shares some simple truths.

"First off, thank you, if you're fans of mine, for being loyal and following and checking out the things I've done.

"[With] COVID and the harsh reality we all and the world has faced and is continuing to, we don't know exactly what's going to happen yet and in the future. I don't think we're out of the woods yet.

"I think we just need to be kind. Everybody, even if it doesn't look like they've gone through hardship, has gone through some form of change and hardship.

"Myself, I can let my temper flare right now because we're all on edge, and we're all beaten up and tired and scared. Sometimes, I just need to take a step back and think about it before I say something and [ask myself], 'Would it make it better if I said that?'

"I think it's important that we be kind to each other right now."

Don't miss Helfer in her role as D.A. Erin Howard on Step Up: High Water Season 3, premiering later this year on Starz.

The gates of hell will be closing for good when Lucifer Season 6 debuts on Netflix.

Before we get to that, however, we still have the second half of Lucifer Season 5, and the full trailer dropped Friday afternoon.

There's a lot to look forward to in these final episodes of the season, including the arrival of God in the flesh.

He was already featured in a previous episode, but Dennis Haysbert (24) will be taking on the role.

It's been a tumultuous few years for fans of Lucifer.

It enjoyed a successful run on FOX, but the network pulled the plug after three seasons.

(Netflix)

Netflix saved the day by picking up a fourth season, and then it was renewed for a fifth — and supposedly final — season.

Then, Netflix changed course and picked up a sixth season. We think it's fair to say that fans have been through the wringer, but at least they're getting an epic conclusion.

The series recently wrapped production on its final season, which probably won't air until late 2021 or early 2022.

The cast paid tribute to the impressive run of the series.

Maze star Lesley-Ann Brandt shared a message with her followers in which she said goodbye to the series one last time.

"Here we are, at the end of our journey you and I. We have laughed and cried , loved and lost and now we say goodbye, you and I," she wrote on Instagram.

"Ever faithful to your story, ever faithful to your journey, your body, your heart. Never more to speak as you speak but never without your words," the star, who has been with the series since the start, added.

"Grateful am I for seasons. Grateful I am for lessons. Grateful I am for challenges. Grateful I am. Blessed are the memories we share, you and I. Your skin was my skin. Your heart IS my heart."

(Netflix)

"To the fans, none of it was possible without you. You embraced us and a demon with heart. I love you. Simply and deeply, with my all, thank you," she wrote.

Aimee Garcia, who plays Ella Lopez, shared behind-the-scenes videos from the set.

"So it’s our last day of filming today. Some people are more emotional than others. I won’t say who the cry babies are! Thank you to all of your fans and our family," she said.

Tom Ellis shared an Instagram photo of a lighter with his first and last day on-set engraved on to it, alongside the following message.

"Thank you to every single crew member who has helped bring the story of Lucifer to life. What a ride."

After six years, it's the end of the line for Netflix's Lucifer.

While fans still have 18 episodes to watch, the series has wrapped production on its sixth and final season on Monday.

As expected, the cast took to social media to pay tribute to the little show that could.

The final day of filming took place on the day Netflix revealed when fans would be able to feast on Lucifer Season 5B.

The series returns May 28 with eight new episodes, but fans will have to wait longer for the final 10 episodes.

To say Lucifer has had an impressive run would be a huge understatement.

It was canceled after FOX after three seasons, only for the fans to rally to demand more episodes.

Netflix agreed and picked up a fourth season. The streamer then ordered a fifth season that was to wrap up the series.

But it then changed course and picked up an additional season, so the show has been through a lot.

At least fans will get to say goodbye this time.

Will you miss the series? Do you think it's time to say goodbye?
