Lonestar was back this week and came fully prepared to reel in some more viewers. We got a little bit more character development, especially with Lindsay and her family, and some run ins with all our leading men.

On “One in Every Family,” Bob and Lindsay got back from their Vegas wedding. They decided to hold a real reception to please their family and friends. This allows for Lindsay’s sister, Gretchen, to join us for the hour. I couldn’t help but like her.

It seems like Lindsay was always the golden child and Gretchen the mess. She is obviously more intuitive than her sister, having suspicions about Bob after only a few days. How long has Lindsay and Bob been together and she never thought that something was up? No one can be that oblivious.

I loved that Gretchen had no worries about who was on phone in the car and didn’t hesitate to call the last number. It should only be a matter of time before she passes on her suspicions to her sister and things quickly unravel. Gretchen is definitely a character I wouldn’t mind seeing more of.

I couldn’t help feeling nervous having all of the men in the same location. The scene at the wind farm with Clint, Tram, Drew, Bob, and John was filled with testosterone and I was so worried that something was going to go wrong. Although John definitely carries some weight, I’m not sure he could handle a one on one with Clint. Jon Voight is just a force to be reckoned with.

Both father characters are ready to throw someone away for the chance to make more money. Ruthless and masculine – this will make for the perfect father face-off.

Drew Thatcher is on the top of my list of favorite Lone Star characters. He’s a charming underdog, not to mention gorgeous. He obviously has his flaws, what with his DUI and all, but he just wants to do well and make his father proud. You could even feel for him when he told Tram that he wasn’t sure Clint would notice if he wasn’t around.

My only complaint about tonight’s episode was the lack of screen time for Cat. My initial reaction was that Bob’s story with her family would be much more interesting than his life with Lindsay, and I am still pretty certain that is true. Although this week showcased the Lindsay storyline a little more, it is not as serious as his Dallas life. When Bob’s life with Cat comes crumbling down, it is going to be catastrophic.

So the Internet has been buzzing with rumors that Fox may pull the plug on Lone Star, and I am really hoping that turns out to be false. Before the premiere, the critics were all talking about how great this show is. After the premiere, tons of viewers fell in love with Lone Star, including me. Lets hope that the feeling catches on and Lone Star is here to stay.

In our critic's estimation, it very much lived up to the hype.

“Do you judge a man by what he’s done or what he wants to do?”

I am pretty sure I have just found my new guilty pleasure. Coming into this fall season, I was looking for a new drama, one with some substance, and one to fill the void Lost left inside me. If the premiere of Lonestar is any indication, it looks like I may have found my show.

Although some may be hesitant that this is another show dealing with Texas and oil, I have a feeling we’re going to get a lot more than that. For one, the characters are defined and played by a cast that shows great promise.

Even though Bob Allen is a con man stealing millions of dollars, you can’t help but like him. He makes you understand why he is doing cons and why he can’t just walk away. You could even see the sense of guilt he experienced throughout different parts of the hour.

He felt bad for the cashier at the gas station; he got nervous when speaking with Lindsey’s parents; and he was panicked after almost getting caught in a lie with Cat’s family. He wants to do the right thing and get away from the con business, he just can’t or doesn’t know how to get away from his father.

Is it just me or does James Wolk remind you of a young Kyle Chandler? They definitely have the same charisma.

Even after all of the movies Jon Voight has done, he still carries a presence that lets you know he is a leading man. I think that he is perfect for the role of Clint Thatcher and I can’t wait to see where he takes the character.

The brothers seem to have an interesting relationship. It is clear that Trammell is the leader and Drew the follower. It will be exciting to see what goes down between the two, considering that Drew seems to really like Bob.

I can’t even tell you how excited I am to see Adrianne Palicki in another television role. I was a huge fan of hers when she was on Friday Night Lights and I instantly liked her more than Bob’s girlfriend Lindsey. The character of Cat surprised me. Seeing that she is the only daughter of an oil tycoon who has plenty of money, I expected her to be prissy and snobbish. Instead, Cat felt relatable and I look forward to seeing the relationship between her, her family, and Bob.

I have been reading everywhere that Lone Star is the show to watch this fall. After seeing the pilot episode, I must say I agree. Just one hour of the show has me looking forward to the next episode. How about you?

I’ll leave you with a few of the best Lone Star quotes from the premiere:

John Allen: You are a con man son, this is what you do. | permalink
Clint Thatcher: This key opens up one door on the thirtieth floor, but if you play it right, it will open up more doors than you can imagine. | permalink
Cat Thatcher: People who believe they can have it all, they’re the ones who end up with everything. | permalink
John Allen: This is a house of cards. You don’t get to live in it. | permalink

On the second episode of Lonestar…

The episode opens with Bob and Lindsay in their airport after their Las Vegas wedding adventure. While Lindsay is in the bathroom, a man recognizes Bob. This man calls him Frank, stating that he stole $25,000 from him while tackling Bob to the ground. Bob tells security that he has never even seen this man before.

After getting home from Vegas, Bob and Lindsay meet with her parents to tell them the news. They are upset that they were not included, but are happy for their daughter. At home, Bob tells Lindsay that she deserves to have the real wedding and they should do it over. While doing some wedding planning with her mom, Lindsay realizes that Bob only has a few people on her list. Her mom also thinks its strange about the lack of information she has about her new husbands past.

This causes some curiosity with Lindsay, so she checks out some of Bob’s old stuff at the house. She looks through his yearbook, but is unable to find anything under Bob Allen. She decides to call his old high school to find out some more. The high school leaves a message that Bob hears. He explains to Lindsay that he never stayed in one place long enough to make it into the yearbook and thats why there was no record of him.

Bob meets with his father to discuss the wind farm con. He is adamant about doing things his way and John is skeptical. Bob claims that he has a plan that he’s putting into work. Bob heads to work at Thatcher oil where Clint and Tram are waiting for him to get off the elevator. Clint confronts him about investing one million of his money without consulting him. Bob tells Clint that he is not sure he belongs in a big corporation and maybe it will be better if they part ways. Meanwhile, John is working a con selling a foreclosure over and over in a restaurant.

Cat and Bob are in bed discussing why he up and quit Thatcher. They get a phone call from the jail to come get Drew who was picked up for a DUI. Cat works her powers of persuasion to convince them to let Drew off with a warning. Waiting for Cat, Bob talks with Drew about the wind farm deal and keeps him on board with the idea.

Tram and Clint go to the wind farm site to meet “John Gardner” who is really Bob’s father. Bob and Drew are already there, which causes Clint to get angry. Clint confronts Bob about trying to steal the idea and reap the rewards. Bob stands proudly with Drew claiming that it was Drew’s idea and he deserves to see it through. They talk with Clint about the opportunity who decides to go along with it and keep it in the family. This allows Bob to bring in his father to the company. After speaking with Clint, John argues with his son about why he chose to tell his father in law that his real father was trash.

Lindsay’s sister Gretchen comes to visit to help out with the wedding. Her and Lindsay do not have the greatest past. Bob tries to bond with her while getting ice cream. Lindsay asks her to be her maid of honor. During one of his usual switches of phones and wallets, Bob loses his work phone for his life with Cat. Gretchen finds his phone in the car and calls back the last dialed number – a John Gardner. He answers the phone and calls him son. Gretchen confronts Bob about the man, where Bob explains that he is a work associate who calls everyone son.

After work, Drew and John meet for drinks. After having a few to many, John takes Drew’s key to the office and goes in to review some papers. John then makes a phone call to a mysterious someone to explain that he is taking this con down alone.

On the premiere of Lonestar

The show’s opening scene is a man and his son sneaking out of a window while someone is banging on the door. This is our first glimpse into the world of conning.

Meet Bob/Robert Allen. Our main character is a con-man running jobs in Texas. He leads a double life, one with his Midland girlfriend, Lindsay and the other wife his wife Cat in Houston. He works in the oil industry conning investors.

Bob’s life with Lindsey is simple. He enjoys this life having bbq’s and acting like a normal working man. His life with Cat is different. Her father, Clint, is an oil tycoon. He run’s a business that both Cat’s brothers (Drew and Trammell) work at, and where he offers Bob an office.

Bob’s father, John, works with him in the con business. John has been doing it since Bob was a child, hence the opening scene of the hour.

Bob travels back and forth between his two lives, meeting people along the way. He is recognized by a passenger from one of his flights who invites him to her hotel room. He passes on the opportunity, telling her he can give two reasons why it’s not worth it.

Bob decides to take the position working with Cat’s family at her fathers business. He is getting frustrated with the conning and tells his father that he wants out. He says he wants to do the job for real and believes that he can do well at it.  John explains to him the he is a con-man, this is not his real life and he needs to remember that.

Deciding to take the job at Clint’s company, Bob ruffles some feathers with Cat’s brother Trammell. Tram and Drew speak about the situation and Tram says he will take care of the situation. Drew and Bob talk about a wind farm that Drew had discovered years earlier and make plans to look further into it, exciting Drew.

Still working his con, Bob and his father meet with investors posing as different people and collecting checks.

Back in Midland, Bob is holding a BBQ with Lindsey, her family and friends. He gets into a scuffle with her ex-boyfriend. After all of the guests leave, John shows up to warn Bob that politicians are suspicious of some of his properties and that he needs to get out of there and leave this con behind. In the middle of the night, Bob gets up to leave his life with Lindsey. He tells her that something has gone wrong with the wells and that it may be a while before he is back.

On his way out of Midland, Bob stops at a gas station. He watches a cashier deal with his father and tells him he understands how he feels. Bob has a breakdown in his car, crying and getting angry. He leaves his Midland cell phone and wallet behind in the trash.

The Thatcher’s are having a party at the office, where Cat is giving Bob notes about those in attendance. Trammell confronts Bob, saying that the hotel where he claims to stay at has no records of him. Bob admits he pretends to stay there to keep up appearances, but prefers to stay at cheap motels. Bob sneaks away and starts to panic. Cat reassures him that everything is great and he is going to do just fine.

Bob decides to purchase the land in Midland that was raising eyebrows with money from his new job. This way everything seems legit. We then see Bob walk into the room with Lindsay wearing a wedding dress.
