Unless you’ve been living on a secluded island or Amish country, adaptations of novels to screen is not a new concept to you.

It’s become one of the most common formulas for creating movies and TV shows.

From Netflix to Amazon, everyone wants a piece of the action.

While not every project is a knockout, audiences have seen some successful franchises flourish from this method.

Just off the top of my head are the Harry Potter movies, Twilight, Hunger Games, 50 Shades of Grey, and even the Bridget Jones movies.

And it’s not just the big screen. TV saw the opportunity and jumped on board with shows like The Vampire Diaries, Game of Thrones, Percy Jackson, and The Witcher.

We likely have the 1697 classic Cinderella to thank for our current state of adaptations. The fairytale was the first book to be made into a movie in 1950.

Although streaming services are the biggest adaptors, some apps take things too far.

Over fifty percent of Apple TV+’s shows in the last five years have all been novel-to-screen adaptations.

Jake Gyllenhaal in Presumed Innocent

Apple TV+ Doesn’t Leave Kids Out Just Because They Don’t Have Credit Cards

Because novels host a whole plethora of genres, the media has been a shortcut to stories for all age groups over the years.

So, it’s unsurprising that a streaming giant like Apple TV+ would have optioned kids’ books for families and young viewers.

While children aren’t exactly signing up for streaming services, kids can be a great motivator for parents. Who doesn’t love a family TV night?

First up, there is Amber Brown, based on Paula Danziger’s book series from the ‘90s.

The show follows Amber Brown, a multiethnic girl navigating the typical pitfalls of growing up while dealing with her parents’ divorce. It’s heavy stuff for kids.

Gary Oldman on Slow Horses
(Jack English/Apple TV+)

Then there is Surfside Girls, which is based on the graphic novels by Kim Dwinell.

The Apple TV+ series focuses on best friends Jade and Sam when they encounter a ghost who tells them about a pirate ship and curse surrounding the hidden treasure of Surfside.

They may be shows for children, but Apple TV+ knows how to cherry-pick some exciting stories for kids.

Comedy Is The Kind Of Genre That Flourishes When It Goes From Page To Screen

Still, the streamer’s catalog of shows for adults far exceeds that for its younger viewers.

If there is one thing every person on the planet can agree on, one of the best feelings is laughter.

Vince Vaughn
(Courtesy of Apple TV+)

Comedy can be tough to get across on the written page as tone can be challenging to nail down.

However, when an author gets it right, the humor usually translates and magnifies when the novel is adapted for the small or big screen.

Film and TV creators can flesh out projects and enhance the story through a multitude of visual elements and components.

If you’ve seen Palm Royale starring Kristen Wigg, based on the book Mr. & Mrs. American Pie by Juliet McDaniel, then you know a splash of color goes a long way in storytelling.

Even Vince Vaughn’s show, Bad Monkey based on Carl Hiaasen’s novel of the same name, makes sure the physical comedy and visual humor match up to the eccentricity of the book.

Novel-to-screen adaptations are also a great way to bridge language barriers.

Land of Women - S01E01 Season 1 Episode 1
(Apple TV+)

Land of Women stars Eva Longoria in a series based on Sandra Barneda’s novel of the same name, but in Spanish, and toes the line between English and the native language of its characters.

There are plenty of laughs from books to be had at Apple TV+, including The Big Door Prize, based on M.O. Walsh’s novel of the same name.

But these kids and comedy shows aren’t why we are concerned with Apple TV+’s obsession with adaptations.

Apple TV+ Is The Originator And Instigator Of The Drama

Have you ever heard the phrase “too much of a good thing?” Well, the same goes for any TV or film genre. And Apple TV+ seems to have its hooks in as many dramatic stories as possible.

Most of the streamers’ series fall under drama, and most of those shows are based on novels.

Kristen Wiig as Maxine Simmons - Palm Royale
(Apple TV+)

Let me clarify that every single streaming app develops stories from books, whether literary or graphic.

However, Apple TV+ seems to exclusively work with adaptations, at least in the last five years, with more on the way.

Still, it has to be said that the stories the executives are choosing offer an out-of-this-world level of entertainment.

Especially when that drama is introduced with comedic flair, profoundly dark undertones, or science fiction that makes you question reality.

The Rashida Jones sci-fi show Sunny, based on The Dark Manual by Colin O’Sullivan, has been a whirlwind of comedy, drama, and thriller action.

There’s actually a point to be made in favor of Apple TV+. Even though the app is shelling out show after show, a huge name is always attached to every project.

Natalie Portman
(Courtesy of Apple TV+)

Take, for example, Lady in the Lake, based on Laura Lippman’s 2015 novel of the same name.

It stars Natalie Portman as a Jewish woman who leaves her life behind when she pursues her dreams to be an investigative journalist after a local woman is found dead in a lake.

If you like visual fever dreams with a masterclass in acting and a mind-boggling story, this is the career-defining series for you.

And it’s not just that show, but a whole roster of one series based on a book of the same name after another. It’s a long list.

Defending Jacob, The Mosquito Coast, Lisey’s Story, Foundation, The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey, Pachinko, Shining Girls, The Essex Serpent, Five Days at Memorial, Shantaram, The Last Thing He Told Me, Silo, City on Fire, The Changeling, Lessons in Chemistry, The Buccaneers, Masters of the Air, and Dark Matter.

Whew!

Of course, we have to include the upcoming Cate Blanchett series Disclaimer, about a journalist who discovers she is the main character in a novel that reveals a dark secret from her past.

Just When You Think Apple TV+ Can’t Get Any More Dramatic, It Renews Its Library Card For More Intense Adaptations Starring Heavyweight Hollywood Names

Foundation Season 2 Key Art
(Apple TV+)

Wait, you didn’t think we were done yet, did you? Oh, gentle reader, we had a legitimate reason to be concerned with Apple TV+’s use of adaptations.

That said, some shows make us understand why the streamer would be so enthusiastic about the novel-to-screen method.

For one thing, it’s how we got the amazing series The Morning Show, based on Brian Selter’s 2013 book Top of the Morning: Inside the Cutthroat World of Morning TV.

Remember what I said about star power? The Morning Show boasts not one but two heavyweight Hollywood names.

Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon play journalists with contrasting personalities who bring their own set of baggage and issues to their news station.

Bradley's Investigation - The Morning Show
(AppleTV+)

Apple TV+ has always dished out award-winning shows. Even though some don’t always hit the mark, the streaming service is covering the walls with adaptation after adaptation.

Those include Truth Be Told, Slow Horses, Roar, Black Bird, The Crowded Room], Manhunt, Franklin, and Presumed Innocent.

So, whether Apple TV+ is obsessed with adapting novels to shows or has just figured out a sure-fire formula is anyone’s guess.

One thing for sure, though, is that the streaming giant has been making waves in quality television, so there may be a correlation.

Either way, you can count on me to be glued to my TV screen watching every perfectly packaged project Apple TV+ throws TV Fanatic’s way.

Which of the streamer’s many adaptations have you seen?

Will you be watching Cate Blanchett in her new miniseries, Disclaimer?

Our review of Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 8 reveals what happens when Lisey makes one final trip to Boo'ya Moon to finish her Bool hunt.

Who says Stephen King can't write a love story?

Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 8 proved otherwise.

The teleplay by King based on his favorite novel was, first and foremost, about the doomed romance between Scott and Lisey Landon.

Seeking Lisey -- Tall - Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 8
(Apple TV+)

But while that was the primary relationship in this limited series, the bond between Lisey and her sisters Amanda and Darla also was front and center as well. King was supposedly inspired by observing his wife Tabitha and her sisters.

Before any of the many loose ends could be tied up, however, a major irritant needed to be dealt with.

Final Fate - Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 8
(Apple TV+)

Yup. Jim Dooley.

Dane DeHaan has brought the necessary menace that any Stephen King work requires. He had been a major component of Lisey's Story thus far.

That's why it was a disappointment that he was dispatched so early in the finale. But at least he got a memorable death out of the deal.

Lisey's plan to do away with Dooley was as ill thought out as it seemed. She thought that the weirdness of Boo'ya Moon would disorient him, but a born predator will adapt to a new situation.

Horrified Lisey - Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 8
(Apple TV+)

Fortunately, the weapons that she had planted there came in handy. Her shovel helped her level the playing field against the stronger Dooley, and the ketamine injection set him up for his end.

Dooley was a loon until the end, right up through his final rant. Just as well that the Long Boy took care of him for Lisey.

The Long Boy was terrifying enough at a distance. But up close, it appeared to be composed of hungry, lost souls who wasted no time in tearing apart Dooley.

It was easy to relate with Lisey at that moment. Dooley had been brutal to her, but that end was too much for anybody, regardless of their crimes.

Worried about Lisey - Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 8
(Apple TV+)

Especially since Lisey had to clean up after the Long Boy, pulling the parts of Dooley out of her pool and disposing of them off the bridge.

It was surprising that those remains never became an issue later on, especially after the police chief expressed his doubts about Dooley's disappearance. Still, he said he was OK with Dooley meeting a bad end, so case closed.

With Dooley discarded, Lisey could move on to more important concerns, finishing her Bool hunt and determining what Scott meant by "Lisey's Story."

Unfortunately, her only source for information, outside of her unreliable memories, was Amanda, who knew more than she let on and less than Lisey needed her to.

Special Story - Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 8
(Apple TV+)

At least Amanda could explain who the shrouded ones are, and Lisey was able to determine that Scott might be one of them, still waiting to pass over. That must be why Lisey never seemed to be able to see Scott just sitting there by the pool.

So it was back to Boo'ya Moon for Lisey, as she had picked up on the last clue in Scott's Bool hunt. She followed the yarn from Good Ma's afghan to her prize: a box containing "Lisey's Story."

Finally, Scott's last and most gruesome secret was revealed: The final fate of his mentally ill (to be kind) father, Andrew, who didn't get any better after he put down Scott's homicidal older brother Paul.

Andrew never returned to work, which meant the two of them had to get by with the supplies that remained at their rundown home.

Conflicted Father - Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 8
(Apple TV+)

These glimpses back into Scott's childhood make you wonder why he didn't end up more screwed up than he was, that he was able to live a fairly normal adult life with only occasional strange occurrences, that he was able to find a woman who loves him.

I mean, first, his father kills his homicidal brother, who Scott adored, and then this?

First, it fell on young Scott to be the adult who keeps himself and his father alive. Then he had to protect the personnel director from Andrew's work, who comes to check in on him by slickly laying out a believable scenario for Andrew's extended absence.

Then his father did something nice, setting up a Bool hunt for him, just like Paul used to do so that Scott could do something remotely child-like.

Key Moment - Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 8
(Apple TV+)

But what was Scott's prize? He got to kill his father with a pick-ax after Andrew was too chicken to kill himself. Then Scott had to dump his body down the well because he couldn't cross over to Boo'ya Moon with Andrew.

That he was adult enough to walk away and not look back was entirely believable. Whatever future he was facing had to be better than his past.

Andrew did love Paul and Scott. Unfortunately, he was just the latest generation of a backward, messed-up family. Scott was able to break free of that.

Scott saw telling this story as necessary for Lisey to be able to move ahead with her life, to be able to leave him behind.

Facing a Monster - Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 8
(Apple TV+)

But that wasn't enough for Lisey, who had to see Scott one more time. She even stood up to the Long Boy, trading her shovel for that opportunity.

She barely made it, as Scott was in the pool departing when she arrived. It was heartwarming as she flashed back through their times together.

It was sweet when she sat down where Amanda had been, also watching her and her sisters play on the Hollyhocks.

In the end, Lisey was moving ahead with her life, although we were all watching to see what would come out of the pool next.

Our review of Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 7 reveals how Scott died and what happens when the Debusher sisters team up to tackle stalker Dooley.

Boo'ya Moon giveth, Boo'ya Moon taketh away.

Scott's greatest blessing turned into a curse on Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 7.

Scott's last big secret, how and why he died, was finally revealed. And his death deserved the half of the episode which it received.

Landon in the Limelight -- Tall - Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 7
(Apple TV+)

And like much of Scott's life, his death was a sad one.

Someone who survived being shot in the chest deserved better than that.

Wound Returns - Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 7
(Apple TV+)

Scott ended up becoming a victim of circumstance.

For decades, the pool at Boo'ya Moon helped the Landon brothers be fast healers. But like with Paul on Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 5, the pool failed Scott in the end.

The fallout from the scratch which Paul gouged into Scott's leg during his final days hadn't been explored. Until now, when it proved fatal after the Long Boy blocked Scott's path to the pool during his last trips.

Even Scott's fame couldn't save him from that part of his past.

Water Overflow - Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 7
(Apple TV+)

Even as Scott strolled into his final reading through a throng of his avid fans, he was wracked by coughing, a foreshadowing of what was to come.

You would have thought that someone who had been shot by a crazed fan would have been a bit more cautious. That thought was reinforced was the fan who appeared to be armed, only to turn over the magic-wand replica to Scott.

But that wouldn't have been Scott, who appeared to have taken what life threw at him with equanimity. After all, he had seen much stranger things than this world has to offer.

Naturally, when Scott started finding blood everywhere, he went back to Boo'ya Moon, which wasn't nearly as hospitable as it normally was.

Shocked Spouse - Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 7
(Apple TV+)

No, for some reason, the Long Boy was choosing just then to block the paths to the healing pool. Why such a mindless beast would choose to do certainly wasn't explained yet, although it must have had a reason.

Maybe it's because of that sarcastic redhead who keeps popping in uninvited.

But the show must go on, and Scott took the stage unhealed, which turned out to be an ill-conceived idea. Maybe he should have canceled at the last minute.

Based on his reading, Scott appeared to enjoy his interactions with his fans, so that probably was why he forged ahead regardless of how badly he felt.

Dying Husband - Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 7
(Apple TV+)

However, the pool water from Boo'ya Moon came spewing out of him and with it all the healing magic that he had enjoyed through the years.

It was little wonder that the doctor couldn't diagnose what was wrong with Scott, as all of his organs, no longer protected by the water, began to shut down.

Lisey had to know this day was coming, as being dependent on a magical cure was asking for trouble. If you can't explain it, you can't rely on it.

Still, it was heartbreaking as her strange soulmate expired of his wounds after magically bouncing back so many times.

Pain of Grief - Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 7
(Apple TV+)

Lisey was mired in grief, drifting through his funeral and reception. Her coping method seemed to be stripping down his office while talking to Scott as he took up a seat for his afterlife in Boo'ya Moon.

It was effectively revealed that present-day Lisey had been reminiscing about those horrible days while waiting for her showdown with her stalker Dooley.

At least she had backup in the form of Darla and Amanda, armed only with a hockey stick. It was laughable to watch that pair trudge through the woods in the rain. But at least they were there for Lisey in such a dangerous moment.

Lisey tried to get answers about Boo'ya Moon and doubles from Amanda, who you would have thought would have had more answers.

Helping Lisey - Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 7
(Apple TV+)

But all she had to offer was Scott's mentioning the importance of "Lisey's Story," which brought a blank look from Lisey herself. Maybe its purpose will become clear in the finale.

Pin Dooley down, and then Lisey will take him to Boo'ya Moon. Darla and Amanda were right when they declared that Lisey had a half-assed plan. When the recently catatonic woman tells you that you haven't thought things through enough, believe her.

Dooley continued to prove how dangerous he was, shooting Officer Beckman on his way into Lisey's house. Beckman should have paid more attention to his gut. And how did the sisters not hear that? Too busy arguing?

What was essential was that Lisey determined how to get into Dooley's head, piecing together that he and Scott's shooter had met at a mental hospital.

In Scott's World - Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 7
(Apple TV+)

Also, the miniature lighthouse finally played a role, blinding Dooley, who was wearing night-vision goggles.

However, expecting three housewives to take down a crazed stalker was asking too much, especially since they had a hardcover, a hockey stick, and a gun they didn't know how to use for weapons. They were overmatched.

The rains came just in time to keep Lisey from being choked out, and she was able to transport them both to Boo'ya Moon.

Now that she's got him there, her plan is sound. The loud Dooley is bound to attract the Long Boy. If not, Lisey has ketamine and a shovel as a fallback plan.

Were you surprised about how Scott died?

Did you expect the sisters to do that badly against Dooley?

Will the Long Boy get him?

Our review of Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 6 reveals what happens when Lisey figures out how to rescue Amanda and get rid of the threat of Dooley.

Lisey finally went from defense to offense after educating herself about Boo'ya Moon.

Her scouting mission to Scott's fantasy world paid off big time on Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 6.

On that visit, Lisey appeared to be setting up for a future trip, picking up a syringe full of ketamine and leaving there Scott's groundbreaking shovel, which had been determined to be important. It was almost like she has a plan.

Looking for Answers -- Tall - Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 6
(Apple TV+)

Best of all, Lisey discovered that Boo'ya Moon's healing waters really worked, largely erasing the beating inflicted on her by Dooley on Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 4.

The big question was, why didn't she do this sooner? Probably because she had been in shock and too busy processing all the repressed memories that were coming back to her.

Healing Water - Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 6
(Apple TV+)

Lisey's other mission while there was determining whether the real Amanda wanted to return from Boo'ya Moon.

Amanda had her answer cut into her arm: "Help me, Lisey." But Lisey was seeking help from Amanda because she had no idea how to accomplish that.

She went there after Scott on her first solo mission. But Scott was an experienced traveler to and from there and knew enough to discard Good Ma's quilt so he could leave.

One thing that Lisey did learn from that previous trip was to keep quiet so as not to alert the Long Boy. That was why she communicated by handwritten message.

Communication Method - Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 6
(Apple TV+)

Unfortunately, Lisey ended up returning home empty-handed, although she was healed. That was when she decided that she needed help that she could trust.

That was where sarcastic baby sister Darla, portrayed by the sparkling Jennifer Jason Leigh, came in.

Lisey resolved to introduce Darla to the world of Boo'ya Moon, with mixed results, even though Darla had read all of Scott's books.

Having Lisey vanish and reappear from a dying flower seemed to convince Darla, even though she remained confused.

Close Sisters - Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 6
(Apple TV+)

It's hard to blame Darla for not understanding this complex world of "the bad," "the gone," "anchors," and "doubles." I don't get it yet, three-quarters of the way through this limited series.

But like Darla, I'll roll with it because this has been an enjoyable ride thus far.

Fortunately, Darla had brought over Amanda's collections of personal protection weapons, even though she had tossed Amanda's gun in the river at Lisey's instruction. That would have been handy to have.

A great scene was when Lisey called Dashmiel to threaten them, to set up Dooley. That was vintage Stephen King dialogue, harsh and profane.

Trying to Return - Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 6
(Apple TV+)

When in doubt, go back to the source. In this case, Lisey and Darla went to visit Amanda.

What better way to get the solution than ask the catatonic sister? But, surprisingly, it worked.

So again, we got to see that bizarre mouth-to-mouth resuscitation with the healing water, this time performed by Lisey, to yank back Amanda from Boo'ya Moon.

Things got good once the three Debusher sisters were reunited. The interplay between them was priceless. If only we had gotten more of that, especially from the sardonic Amanda.

Armed Darla - Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 6
(Apple TV+)

First, they tag-teamed poor Dr. Alberness, with Lisey and Amanda offering up what may have caused her miracle cure and Darla distracting him from the back of his office.

Then, on the drive home, after Amanda had been caught up on all that had happened in her catatonic absence, the three sisters determined that Jim Dooley must die. After all, he had violated them all in some way.

The trio appeared so excited, dancing in the rain on a picnic table and screaming about Dooley's fate.

Lisey has set the trap well. Dashmiel did his tiny part, getting the police to call off Officer Beckman, who was guarding her house.

Spying on Lisey - Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 6
(Apple TV+)

The voicemail she recorded to lure him in was flawless. Lisey sounded like she was at her wits' end.

One possible flaw in the plan was having Amanda and Darla sneak back to Lisey's house through the woods. Neither strikes me as particularly stealthy.

The other thing that can't be overestimated is that Dooley is crazy. He felt disrespected just because the sisters shared a carefree laugh that had nothing to do with him.

Expecting him to wait until 10 p.m., as Lisey requested, is probably asking too much. Lisey will likely find herself facing him one-on-one once again. Hopefully, she'll have Amanda's toys in place long before that.

Home and Healed - Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 6
(Apple TV+)

Still, with the lighthouse in Scott's study reflecting the lighthouse in Boo'ya Moon, I think Dooley's fate will probably be sealed in that fantastical land.

Having been there before, Lisey definitely would have the upper hand, knowing her way around somewhat. The Scott existing in that land would likely find some way to help her out.

Lisey must not have noticed Scott garbed in that hood when she was there. Otherwise, wouldn't she have talked to him at least?

Dooley could be his own worst enemy in Boo'ya Moon. With his nonstop talking, wouldn't he attract the attention of the Long Boy, something anyone who knows better wouldn't want to do?

Lisey arrives at Boo'ya Moon. She retrieves the syringe of ketamine from Paul's grave. She sets down the shovel next to two RC Cola bottles. She immerses herself in and drinks from the healing waters. Amanda and Scott are there and see her. A healed Lisey spots them both when leaving the water. Lisey holds up a note to Amanda asking if she still wants to come home. Amanda says yes but Lisey is unable to bring home yet. Darla stops by with all the weapons she found at Amanda's house. Lisey tells Darla she could be an anchor and Lisey looks at her like she's crazy. Lisey vanishes back to Boo'ya Moon when Darla turns around. She picks a flower and returns as a demonstration for Darla, who is resistent. Lisey calls Dashmiel threatening to sue him unless he gets Dooley to come to Scott's study that night while telling the police Dooley has left town. She also leaves a message for Dooley on Scott's recorder. Lisey attempts to explain to Darla how Boo'ya Moon works without much success. They go to visit Amanda. Lisey figures out that Scott supplied water from Boo'ya Moon while kissing Amanda to bring her back last time. So Lisey does the same and returns her. The sisters hug. They convince Dr. Alberness to discharge Amanda. Amanda breaks down in the car. Lisey catches her up on the ride home. Darla realizes that Dooley was in Amanda's house when she visited. Darla threw Amanda's gun in the river. The sisters agree to kill Dooley. Dooley retrieves Lisey's message. He sees Lisey release Officer Beckman from guard duty. The sisters make plans for that evening. Dooley thinks they're making fun of him.

Our review of Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 5 reveals what happens after Lisey sifts through her repressed memories and realizes what Scott is trying to tell her.

The post Lisey’s Story Season 1 Episode 5 Review: The Good Brother appeared first on TV Fanatic.

]]>
Finally, Lisey allowed herself to understand what Scott wanted her to know.

She was still processing what to do with that by the end of Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 5.

What was most important was that after burying what she knew for the length of their marriage, Lisey had woken up and accepted that Boo'ya Moon, Scott's fantasy world, was real.

Locked in Memories -- Tall - Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 5
(Apple TV+)

Scott must be just shaking his head in Boo'ya Moon about how long it took for that to happen.

He shouldn't have been surprised. After he told her all of his dark secrets on their honeymoon, she told him as much: "The other stuff, the stuff about your brother and where we went, that never happened. Because I … I can't deal with it."

Troublesome Tale - Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 5
(Apple TV+)

To her own detriment, it appears. Her life, especially post-Scott, would have been easier if she had worked to understand Scott's world rather than deny it existed.

After Lisey's remembrance of Scott's grim childhood, it's a wonder he had as normal an adult life as he did. Granted, he had his writing as a form of therapy, so that must have helped.

Earlier in this series, we'd seen the loving relationship between older brother Paul and younger brother Scott. It had also been indicated that their father was mentally ill and put the boys through what appeared to be torture for their own good.

In this episode, it was revealed that while their father was indeed insane, there was a family history of either a homicidal mania (Paul) or deep catatonia (Scott). He referred to this as "the bad" and "the gone," the Landon family curse.

Well-Meaning Father - Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 5
(Apple TV+)

How their father periodically bleeding Paul was supposed to prevent "the bad" from invading him wasn't logical but must have been an old family remedy.

Unfortunately, the day came when "the bad" invaded Paul's brain, and he chased and attacked Scott just before their father knocked out Paul with a log.

What certainly wasn't clear from Scott's telling the tale to Lisey was why their father left Paul chained up to a tractor in the barn for three weeks as they went about their lives as normal.

Naturally, their father was one of those uneducated nutjobs who didn't trust the existing power structure, including traditional medicine. Otherwise, he wouldn't have been cutting his child for years, would he?

Infected Brother - Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 5
(Apple TV+)

Mostly, they were holding out hope for a change in Paul's condition, which never came.

Remembering their favorite playground, Scott suggested taking Paul to the healing waters of Boo'ya Moon to see if that could help him.

Naturally, that didn't work as Paul awoke too soon from the ketamine dose in his food to attack Scott, choking him, forcing their father to shoot and kill Paul.

With no resistance from Paul, Scott transported his body to Boo'ya Moon, burying it near the sweetheart trees where Lisey later found it.

Praying for a Miracle - Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 5
(Apple TV+)

After viewing this sad story, it's difficult to go along with Scott's assessment that his father did what he did out of love for his children. He would have exhausted all treatment possibilities if he loved them and not just depended on family lore.

Yet to be answered is what happened to Scott's dad since it appears unlikely that he reached a natural end based on the family history.

Paul's tragedy was only part of the memories that came flooding back to her. Finding Paul's marker was but a part of her first solo journey to Boo'ya Moon.

To bring Scott home, a frustrated Lisey felt she had to use her natural ability to travel to Boo'ya Moon to retrieve Scott.

Paul's Gravesite - Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 5
(Apple TV+)

After seeing the perils of Boo'ya Moon, it's simpler to comprehend why Lisey blotted it out of her memory. It was like a library with the world's strictest librarian.

Lisey didn't know the rules of Boo'ya Moon nor care. She did manage to get through to Scott and brought him back … yet again.

Which was likely the point of Scott's Bool hunt and Amanda's veiled hints, and the ghost of Scott intruding on a wounded Lisey's reverie.

Even though she has ignored it, Lisey has a special ability to help a loved one, in this case, Amanda.

Telling a Sad Story - Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 5
(Apple TV+)

Where the shovel enters into this scenario is difficult to say. She used it once to save Scott, knocking out his shooter. Maybe she will need it in Boo'ya Moon to bring back Amanda?

What's entertaining about Stephen King's teleplay is that viewers get to be confused right along with Lisey, or better yet, get a step or two ahead of her. That's especially true if they've read the novel already.

The biggest disappointment about this episode was that there was precious little Dooley. The only scene featuring him basically revealed that Dashmiel got to discover what kind of person he had turned loose on Lisey, one that he no longer controlled.

Lisey's ability to transport to Boo'ya Moon also may help her with her most dangerous problem: Dooley. Wouldn't Scott's biggest fan want to visit the land where he based all his novels? So what if there's a big hungry monster there?

Dooley leafs through the unpublished manuscripts he stole from Scott's office. He calls Dashmiel to let him know what he has found. Dashmiel tells him to stop but Dooley refuses. Lisey recalls overfilling a sink with water and being transported to Boo'ya Moon to rescue Scott. She finds the gravesite for Scott's brother Paul. On their honeymoon, Scott had told her about how Paul died. Infected with "the bad," Paul chased Scott but his father hit Paul in the head with a log. He kept the animalistic Paul chained up in the barn for three weeks. Scott wanted to take Paul to Boo'ya Moon to see if that would heal him. So his father mixed ketamine into Paul's food to knock him out. But Paul woke up and got on top of Scott, choking him, so his father had to shoot Paul. Now that Paul was dead and couldn't resist, Scott was able to take him to Boo'ya Moon. He buried Paul near the sweetheart trees, where the dirt was soft. In the present, Lisey realizes that the ghost of Scott is telling her that the shovel she used to slug his shooter is the key to her current problem. She remembers when she used her natural ability to go to Boo'ya Moon to retrieve Scott, who was gone there. While there, the residents warn her to be quiet or she'll attract the Long Boy. Scott says Good Ma's afghan is an anchor and tosses it and they escape just ahead of the Long Boy. In the present, Lisey texts Darla that she may have a way to help Amanda. Then she grabs the shovel and a bag of papers and walks into her pool to go to Boo'ya Moon.

Our review of Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 4 reveals what happens during and after Lisey's harrowing encounter with her psychotic stalker Dooley.

The post Lisey’s Story Season 1 Episode 4 Review: Jim Dandy appeared first on TV Fanatic.

Perhaps almost being killed may cause Lisey's eyes to be opened.

Sadly, that was still to be determined following Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 4.

That's because while Lisey accepted Scott's weirdness, she has repressed memories about conversations and events connected to it, for her own sanity.

Seeking Boo'ya Moon -- Tall - Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 4
(Apple TV+)

Only now insanity reigned all around her. It wasn't just Scott anymore, or her mentally ill sister Amanda. Her biggest problem lately was Jim Dooley, Scott's psychotic superfan.

Lisey was discovering that Hamlet nailed it: "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy."

Threatening Voicemail - Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 4
(Apple TV+)

Scott's Bool hunt had been causing Lisey to open her mind. But that has been something fun, a way to stay in touch with Scott with the prize possibly being something that could help the catatonic Amanda.

There is nothing enjoyable about Dooley. He's dangerous strange, not kooky strange.

Dana DeHaan has been mesmerizing as Dooley. He's courteous and soft-spoken one minute, then explosively violent the next.

Thus far, Lisey had made the big mistake of not taking Dooley seriously, even after watching his online rant praising Scott on Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 3.

Prized Possession - Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 4
(Apple TV+)

Part of that was that the police gave little credence to Dooley. Also, Scott always had downplayed his crazy fans.

Mostly though, Lisey was wrapped up in her own stuff, between dealing with the reminders of Scott and the sister drama with Darla and the institutionalized Amanda.

The self-important Dooley frequently had been laughed at during his life so he was hypersensitive to what he perceived as Lisey's disrespect.

The plastic bag Dooley pulled over her head should have been enough to convince Lisey to take him seriously.

Fighting for Air - Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 4
(Apple TV+)

But no. She insisted on trying to intimidate, then reason with, a man who was sure that no one knew more about Scott Landon, especially his wife.

The violence that Dooley rained on Lisey was brutal since he was certain that psychological torture wasn't going to be enough to force her to donate Scott's papers.

What was most frightening was that Dooley was convinced that Lisey was hiding some secret unpublished works, beyond which he had already found, which she was never going to be able to produce.

To show his threat against Lisey's sisters had teeth, Dooley next drove to Amanda's house, showing his presence by leaving a dirty plate and a stack of Oreos.

Time for a Snack - Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 4
(Apple TV+)

To further make that point, Darla walked past a hidden Dooley as she collected items for Amanda. That handgun is bound to make an important appearance later.

Maybe Lisey was in shock but she failed to make an obvious connection. Why shouldn't she go use the healing waters of the pool in Boo'ya Moon?

For that water, is there any chance that her steaming pool is connected to the waters of Boo'ya Moon?

You would think Lisey would know. But she's only slowly retrieving her memories of visits to Boo'ya Moon.

Badly Beaten - Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 4
(Apple TV+)

From what we've seen of Boo'ya Moon, it doesn't appear to be all that inviting. And are the versions of Amanda and Scott who are there the real things or doubles?

When it comes to Boo'ya Moon, there are a lot more questions than answers. That's because no one involved is any kind of authority.

Scott came the closest. He was most comfortable with Boo'ya Moon since he and Paul had journeyed to the healing pool after their father cut Paul to let "the bad" out.

But Scott admitted his knowledge was spotty and involved too much guesswork.

Surprise Appearance - Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 4
(Apple TV+)

Amanda only went to Boo'ya Moon when she was catatonic which makes her knowledge difficult to access.

That leaves Lisey, who up until now considers Boo'ya Moon an imaginary place.

Scott called her a natural when it comes to traveling to and from Boo'ya Moon. Unlike Scott and Amanda, she didn't have to be catatonic to go there. She could just picture the place and jump.

And yet, she's just now willing to entertain the possibility that it's a real land. The fact that she recalls being there twice (so far) should have been proof enough.

Going Away - Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 4
(Apple TV+)

She has managed to bring Scott back from there twice. So what's stopping her from hopping over and healing herself? Besides a fear of who or what she might find there.

Amanda has always told Lisey that she is the one who must keep Scott anchored to this world. Some version of Scott is stuck there now. Could Lisey possibly bring him back?

Amanda has to have more to offer Lisey than she has so far if only Lisey can determine how to get through to her.

Also, Lisey has seen the Long Boy once and can't want to run into that monster again. Maybe that's making her leery as well.

Captured by a Madman - Lisey's Story Season 1 Episode 4
(Apple TV+)

Another storyline that remained largely shrouded in mystery is Scott's childhood.

Their father appeared to love them, but he bled Paul and tried to keep Scott from being gone. Paul is dead but how did that occur? What happened to Paul's father?

Boo'ya Moon was something of a refuge for the Landons. But Scott said it's populated by broken people. Does that include him and Amanda?

Those answers may help to explain why Scott is now gone.
