Fox Orders More Lethal Weapon: Is Damon Wayans Returning?

Another day, another twist in the Lethal Weapon tale.

Lethal Weapon Season 3 will last longer than initially planned. Fox has placed an order for two additional episodes, bringing this season's tally to 15 installments, according to Deadline

What's more, series star, Damon Wayans is on board for these bonus episodes. News of his involvement is quite the surprise given that he dropped a bombshell on his cast, crew, and fans everywhere that he was quitting the series after the initial 13 episodes were produced.

"I’m going to be quitting the show in December after we finish the initial 13,” the actor said during an interview with Electric Urban Report.

“So I really don’t know what they’re planning, but that’s what I’m planning. I’m a 58-year-old diabetic, and I’m working 16-hour days.”

“You have to look yourself in the eye and ask, who are you? It can’t be all about work," Wayans continued.

"I’m from a big family, a loving family. All the family gatherings, I haven’t seen them. I’m too tired or I can’t because it conflicts with work."

Deadline states that Wayans has met with producers, and there have been adjustments to the shooting schedule, and with the addition of diabetic meals being available on set, Wayans agreed to continue for the two episodes.

It's unclear at this stage whether these episodes will bring the story to a close or if they will end on a cliffhanger, setting up a potential fourth season.

Through three installments, Lethal Weapon Season 3 is averaging a 0.8 rating. This is on par with its spring average, but it is tied with The Gifted as Fox's lowest-rated scripted series.

More worrying is that Fox does not own the series, so if the ratings are not where they need to be, the network will not hesitate to swing the ax.

Given all the bad press the show has received since Clayne Crawford was fired, it wouldn't be out the realm of possibility that Fox wants to give this show and ending and move on.

Keesha Sharp who plays Trish Murtaugh shared the following on Twitter after the extra episodes were announced:

Yay! We get more episodes this season to continue the story! Damon’s not going anywhere 😉 🙏🏾 To our #LethalWeapon fans: THANK YOU so much for supporting us! Our numbers are great (in a tough time slot!) & DVR numbers are stellar! WE ♥️ U!!
