It's the end of the line for Legion at FX. The cable network has confirmed that the upcoming third season will be the final one for the series.

Legion is coming to a premature end.

FX revealed during its turn at the Television Critics Association winter press tour that the low-rated Marvel TV drama wrap with its forthcoming third season.

FX boss John Landgraf maintains that the show has not been “canceled,” claiming that it was always planned to span three seasons.

(Michelle Faye/FX)

“Noah Hawley had always considered Legion to be a three-season show,” FX CEO John Landgraf told reporters, “and he has confirmed that he’s going to stick with his plan. This will be the final season.”

In addition, it was also revealed that that Season 3 of Legion will debut in June.

It's hard to imagine FX letting go of the show if it did not freefall in the ratings. Legion Season 2 averaged a mere 430,000 viewers and a 0.19 rating in the demo in live + same day results.

The show was down almost 60 percent in the demo vs. Legion Season 1. As such, was somewhat surprising that it even secured a renewal for a third season.

Marvel is known for wheeling and dealing to keep its shows on the air, so that could be attributed to the renewal.

“Legion has redefined the superhero drama and exceeded all expectations as the intensity and revelation build through the second season,” FX co-President of Original Programming for FX Networks and FX Productions Eric Schrier said last summer when the renewal was announced.

"We are also grateful for the contributions of our executive producers, John Cameron, Lauren Shuler Donner, Simon Kinberg, and Jeph Loeb with Marvel Television, as well as our outstanding cast and crew of this groundbreaking show.”

Legion follows a man who has struggled with mental illness ever since he as a teenager. Diagnosed as schizophrenic, David has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for years.

But after a strange encounter with a fellow patient, he’s confronted with the possibility that the voices he hears and the visions he sees might be real.

Legion's flashy, heartbreaking second season ends with a bang on Legion Season 2 Episode 11, which sees David make a choice he may never come back from

Legion's second season finale was a reminder that its titular character is not a hero.

In fact, Legion Season 2 Episode 11 made it very clear that, despite what David himself may think, he's this story's villain. As this season has progressed, David's actions have been more morally compromised.

The lies and secrets that he promised not to tell have piled up, so much so that Syd and the rest of his friends feel obligated to save him from himself.

Finale Time - Legion Season 2 Episode 11

That final scene, one which sees David take a step toward villainy that he may not be able to come back from, is so powerful because, for perhaps the first time, we get a sense of just how far gone David is.

He's lost touch with reality almost completely and instead is telling himself a story about what is true and what isn't, and about who is and isn't a hero.

Related: Legion Renewed for Season 3 at FX!

Sydney, the person he wants so desperately not to lose, is slipping away from him, and instead of letting her go, he uses his power to keep her trapped.

Legion works because of this relationship, and because, although the show is not exactly easy to follow, it always grounds its bizarre tangents and honest emotional stakes. This show is about the battle for David's mind, and Sydney's inability to save him.

Sydney: What if you’re not the hero? What if you’re just another villain?

🔗 permalink: What if you’re not the hero? What if you’re just another villain?

The show has given time to its supporting players throughout the season, but here the show focuses almost exclusively on David and Syd and the relationship between them.

Dan Stevens gets the lion's share of the honors for his wonderful work on this show, as he should. He played three different versions of David in this episode with aplomb.

Kristen Bell - The Good Place

Stevens' role may be flashier, but Rachel Keller's performance is so nuanced and emotionally complex that she's often the most captivating thing this show has to offer. This episode was focused on Syd's realization that the man she's in love with is not who she thought he was, and Keller sells that tragedy wonderfully.

Farouk: It’s really sick, what you’re doing to her. Don’t you think?

🔗 permalink: It’s really sick, what you’re doing to her. Don’t you think?

The episode's opening sequence, which depicted the battle between David and Farouk with stylish animation, was suitably surreal, but the episode was characterized by interactions between its characters.

In fact, this finale was one of the more straightforward episodes of Legion's entire second season, in part because it attempted to be a summation of all of the ideas that creator Noah Hawley and his writers had thrown out in the previous ten episodes.

Related: Atlanta Renewed for Season 3 at FX!

Not all of those storylines completely track. Farouk's trajectory is still slightly muddled — he may not end the world like David is supposed to, but why exactly does that mean he's allowed to do whatever he wants?

Sydney: David, you drugged me and had sex with me.

🔗 permalink: David, you drugged me and had sex with me.

Even so, Legion works because it's willing to play with complicated characters.

Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of Legion's second season was the dichotomy that it established between villainy and heroism. David wants so badly to see himself as a hero and Farouk as the devil, but Legion doesn't work that way.

Dragons in Battle

David can stop Farouk and still be on the wrong side. He can be a mutant with incredible powers and be mentally ill. If Legion Season 2 Episode 11 was anything, it was a rejection of the idea that humans are only one thing.

Ultimately, it's David's insistence on relying on his own worldview that leads him to completely abandon the people who are trying to help him.

David: I’m a good person. I deserve love.

🔗 permalink: I’m a good person. I deserve love.

The show remains one of the most stylish on television, in part because it is often hugely self-indulgent, unwilling to deny itself any impulse. This episode is fairly straightforward, but it still features an extended opening sequence set to The Who's "Behind Blue Eyes."

Legion is fascinating because it seems to lack any self-control, but that also makes the show a sprawling, messy saga of one man's battle against his psychosis. The stark tragedy of this episode is that it reminds us that this is not a battle David is going to win.

The difficulty the show has always had is that, while Stevens is compelling, David is a confusing, complicated character who often feels unknowable. He's charming and sweet, but he also clearly has a fondness for torture and murder.

Related: Enjoy UNLIMITED access to thousands of Movies and TV shows with Amazon Prime Video

Now, Legion has taken a step towards suggesting who David is, and all of the sweetness that Stevens played through its first two seasons may prove especially crucial now that David has decided that he doesn't need Syd nor any of his other friends at all anymore.

Sydney: What do we do now?

Clark: Now we pray.

🔗 permalink: Now we pray.

David's power may be inherently corrupting. The show seems to continually be asking whether anyone that powerful can even be blamed for bending others to their will. How do you know what is right if you consider yourself a god and not a human? Why should you have to play by other people's rules?

Through its first two seasons, Legion has asked us to sympathize with a villain who wants to be a hero. Now, it seems he may have finally given up on trying to be something he's not.

The show is all done for the year, but when it returns, be sure to watch Legion online.

Do you think Legion Season 2 ended well? Do you think it did enough to justify all the strange tangents taken? Let me know in the comments below!

FX was the latest network to take to the Television Critics Association winter press tour, and the panel for Legion came with the exciting news that Legion Season 2 will debut in April!

That's a little later than many expected, but it's not too far away.

In addition to the premiere month being confirmed, creator Noah Hawley revealed that Navid Negahbanis is replacing Said Taghmaoui as Ahmal Farouk.

Yes, that's the Shadow King. If you watch Legion online, you will know he was the villain who immersed himself in the psyche of David Haller.

With the villain being out in the open, there's no telling just how terrible things will get for the characters when the show returns.

Aside from the Legion goodies, FX CEO John Landgraf confirmed that Fargo Season 4 is pretty much a go and that it all came down to Hawley's availability because of his schedule.

“Noah, who’s become quite a busy bee, not only with Legion [but with novels and features, too] has told us that he has an idea, which excites me enormously, for a fourth cycle,” Landgraf told reporters. “The plan is to have that ready for 2019.”

Given that Fargo is one of the most critically acclaimed shows around, the news is hardly surprising. It was always a matter of the availability of the creative forces behind it.

Finally, Landgraf was quick to point out to reporters that Better Things will continue to flourish without the influence of Louis C.K.

He noted that he had "extraordinary confidence" in co-creator Pamela Adlon continuing the journey alone.

“It’s Pamela’s show,” he confirmed. “These are her stories. This is her life. Louis was her co-writer. She’s going to have to write them all herself or find another co-writer. I’m optimistic and confident that the third season will be great.”

Legion is one of the best new cable dramas of the year, so it makes sense that fans are eagerly anticipating the show's sophomore season.

Legion Season 1 found David Haller suffering an identity crisis. He thought he was suffering from mental illness, and spent most of his life trying to find a treatment that helped him.

Nothing could prepare him for the revelation that he's one of the most powerful mutants on the planet.

Looking ahead to Season 2, the cast and crew of the FX drama made their way to San Diego Comic-Con, and they came armed with a whole lot intel for the new season.

The biggest news, of course, is that the series will span ten episodes. That's up two hours from the first season, so we're excited for some more from the intricate world that Noah Hawley created for fans.

Lenny Revels in her Power - Legion Season 1 Episode 6
(Michelle Faye/FX)

A big question heading into the new run was about who was going to be the main antagonist, and we now have some insight into the character.

Saïd Taghmaoui has been cast as Amahl Farouk, aka the Shadow King. If you watch Legion online, you will know that's who took control of David's brain.

The villain already appeared in the form of Aubrey Plaza’s character Lenny throughout Season 1

Farouk has a longstanding feud with David's dad, and it looks like he's intent on making David pay for it.

Hawley was quizzed about how he settled on Farouk as the central villain for the series going forward.

"They're taking something that should be action and turning it into something so much more interesting," he said.

"That always stuck with me: Xavier defeated this guy, went off and had a kid. It always seemed to me that it was an interesting thing we could build into where at first you think it's Division 3 and it's the plucky rebels against the empire."

"And as we're getting ready to fight the empire, we see David's memories and learn he's not mentally ill. The real enemy was within him. I thought that was very subversive."

Jean Smart as Melanie Bird - Legion
(FX/Michelle Faye)

At the panel, Rachel Keller was asked whether her character, Syd was going to feel more proactive.

"It's all about an exploration of who am I and what am I capable of, and how do I reckon with something I thought was wrong and made me sick, but I can now use to help people and deepen a relationship she feels strongly about," said Keller.

Noah Hawley also opened up about whether David and Syd will continue to be romantically linked in future episodes.

"This is an epic love story between two people who can't physically be together. If season one was the honeymoon, in season two, we're going to explore how this actually works."

David is in Bad Shape - Legion Season 1 Episode 2
(Michelle Faye/FX)

Fans wanted to know about whether they would see more of David's back story and Hawley had the best response.

"We know his story pretty well now, but we don't know everybody's story really well now, so I think there are other people we may see where they came from and how it brought them to this moment."

With David's mind back to normal, it seems that he could be set to make some bad decisions.

A Looming Threat - Legion
(FX/Michelle Faye)

"Now he has to face up to the fact that without that thing in him, he's like everybody else — he has good ideas and impulses, bad ideas and impulses. It might be interesting to see his hubris: 'I'm a hero, so everything I do is heroic,'" Hawley revealed, while Dan Stevens concurred: "There are still a number of issues inside this man's head."

“More than a new series, Legion is a wholly original take on the super hero genre. Our thanks to Noah Hawley for taking the creative risks and shattering expectations. It’s a privilege to work again with Noah, his producing partners, the outstanding cast and our partners at Marvel Television on another season of Legion.”

"We are thrilled there will be a new season of Legion. Noah's spectacular take on David Haller and all the other characters he brought to life makes us ache for more. In Legion Season 1, Episode 5, David finds a way to bring Syd into his mind via the astral plane, but their happiness is short lived when an old adversary endangers them both.

David and Syd make a Rainbow Connection, but they don't get a pot of gold at the end. The color is more yellow, if you get my meaning.

In Legion Season 1 Episode 5, David comes back from the astral plane, but he isn't the same guy who left. We now know that Yellow Eyes is mind wrestling for control of David and his immense power, and guess who has the upper hand?

It all starts out cool enough since David has found a way to finally get together with Syd.

I'm glad the writers came up with a solution for them to have a proper romance because the whole "not touching" thing was getting old.

The astral plane creation suggestion by Ollie is pretty easy for David, and he creates a white room love nest for his boo Syd.

David: I think I know what I am.

Syd: You do?

David: I’m the magic man. It’s OK. It’s OK. Just want you to know-I found a way for us to be together.

🔗 permalink: I’m the magic man. It’s OK. It’s OK. Just want you to know-I would a way for us to be together.

It doesn't take long for our lovebirds to make sweet, sweet love, but wouldn't you know it, Lenny/Yellow Eyes crushes the mood.

Yellow Eyes has only one thing in mind: rescuing Amy. At least that's what he tells David to convince him to go to Division 3.

The REAL reason for Yellow Eyes' need to go to D3 is to get some killing done. What better way to test your powers, right?

Syd: Are we really going to D 3 tomorrow?

David: It will be fun. Kick some ass. Save the girl. Get a snack.

Syd: They’ll kill us. You know that, right?

David: They’ll try.

🔗 permalink: They’ll try.

It's obvious to me, what with the Jack Nicholson "Shining" crazy gleam in his eyes, that David is not himself. Syd doesn't see, but Melanie thankfully does.

Syd is in love, but Melanie has her own agenda.

She knows that David talked to Ollie, and she is convinced that he can bring him back into the real world.

Melanie: He saw him, Cary. Oliver-in the astral plane.

Loudermilk: He told you?

Melanie: He can bring him back. I know it.

🔗 permalink: He can bring him back. I know it.

This puts Syd and Melanie at odds. Syd is only looking out for her man, and can't see that he's not the same.

Melanie only cares about getting Ollie back and endangers the entire team with her obsession. Ain't love grand?

Of course, everyone out there would probably do the same thing, right?

People are inherently selfish when push comes to shove, and will do what's in their self-interest over anything else.

Melanie: We can’t lose him.

Ptonomy: Why? Because you think he’s going to bring Oliver back?

Melanie: No. Because he’s too powerful.

🔗 permalink: No. Because he’s too powerful.

I don't buy that for a second. She realizes that he is very powerful, and doesn't want him on the other side, but getting Ollie back is most important to her right now.

When the Summerland gang followed David to D3, the carnage left in his wake is very shocking: limbs strewn everywhere, people half submerged in walls and the ground (just like Lenny/Benny/whoever in Clockworks), everything blew up real good.

But if you thought that was gnarly, then the CCTV footage showing David gleefully vaporizing D3 soldiers was creepy as f*ck!

David mugging for the cameras and killing with such enjoyment was hard to watch.

But the main reveal, of course, was when we saw the infrared footage, showing Yellow Eyes as the culprit, wearing David's meat suit. Dayum!

We knew this was coming, but to finally see it as a real event was a first for this show. The "unreliable narrator" way of telling the story is finally being pared down, and it makes the whole deal much easier to follow.

I. for one, am happy they are doing a more linear strategy as far as storytelling goes.

Loudermilk: I mean split mind. This monster isn’t David. It’s a parasite of some kind. You see, another consciousness inside him.

Melanie: What does that mean?

Loudermilk: This thing burrowed into David’s brain when he was a boy, maybe even a baby, and has been there, feeding off him ever since.

Ptonomy: The memories?

Loudermilk: Memories, exactly! Every time David sees this thing, or realizes it’s there, this creature makes him forget-rewrites his memory.

Melanie: Is that why we couldn’t see it?

Loudermilk: I think so.

🔗 permalink: I mean split mind.

Ollie told David this in Legion Season 1 Episode 4, but the explanation by Loudermilk was a good move here.

David still has some life left inside his noggin and can get messages to Syd in the white room from time to time. Or is Yellow Eyes allowing it, so he can get them where he wants them? Hmmm.

One such occurrence is when Syd gets a flash that David has taken Amy to their childhood home.

David uses this opportunity to question Amy about his real past.

When that doesn't work out, Yellow Eyes emerges into the real world in the form of Lenny, to scare the living crap out of Amy.

Mission accomplished!

Lenny is Evil - Legion Season 1 Episode 5
(FX/Michelle Faye)

David plays with Amy, like a cat stalking a mouse. Then he sends Lenny in to close the deal.

Lenny transforms to Benny, then the invisible dog King, to scare Amy into a confession.

It works.

David: My whole life is a lie. I just need to know-who am i?

Amy: You were adopted.

🔗 permalink: You were adopted.

They have never shown the face of David's adoptive dad, and maybe this is why.

We know from the source material that David is the son of Charles Xavier, big daddy of the X-Men, so the fact that we now know his adoptive dad isn't Professor X makes perfect sense.

Making the Summerland crew unable to communicate when they descend on Casa David is a cool way to handle that scene, building the tension to a decent level.

Lenny sucking face with David while speaking in the voice of Yellow Eyes was very creepy indeed.

A very vulgar display of power, huh?

Head of Division 3: So much power. It wears a human face. Be careful, he wears a human face.

🔗 permalink: So much power. It wears a human face. Be careful, he wears a human face.

And just when you thought David and Syd were safe in the white room, here comes the big ugly, with sadistic intent.

When David went nuclear at the end, I thought it was his last resort way to protect the crew from Yellow Eyes, by sending them back to the nut hut Clockworks.

But that doesn't explain why Lenny is now the head shrinker, and why was The Eye there as a patient?

Does this mean Yellow Eyes put them all there in a sort of prison world? We'll find out, hopefully.

I loved this episode! The story is barreling forward, and the plot is much easier to follow. I can't wait to see how they escape Clockworks, and if the contraption Loudermilk came up with can help David regain control.

That's my take. Give me your theories. Is Yellow Eyes totally in control of David now? Did David send the crew to Clockworks for protection, or did Yellow Eyes send them there to control them?
