Families always stick together, which Helena proved when she protected Gavin and his family.

You’re not alone if you’re still shocked by La Brea Season 3 Episode 6 events, like those ingenious plans, deaths, or joyous reunions.

After three seasons, La Brea ended on an emotional and somewhat predictable finale after having high-stakes the rest of the season.

Harris Family Reunion - La Brea Season 3 Episode 6
(Arianna Fregoso (NBCUniversal ))

TV Fanatic enjoyed chatting with showrunner David Appelbaum to break down the finale and discuss some of the season’s twists, including Natalie Zea’s limited screen time and Izzy and Leya’s relationship.

Check out the interview below.

The Wisdom Tree - La Brea Season 3 Episode 6
(Arianna Fregoso (NBCUniversal ))

So, this was a very action-packed season. Thank you. Let’s talk about how Natalie Zea only appeared in the series finale. Was that planned that way?

We knew from the beginning of the season that we only had her for one day of filming and wanted to use those scenes we could accomplish on that day in the finale. So that was something that we planned for.

From the beginning of the series, I knew the ending would be the Harris family reuniting. So, we wanted to use that opportunity when we had her to be able to show that reunion. We knew that from the beginning of Season 3 and crafted the story for that ending.

Okay, and was 1965 always in the mix? Because I know several fans speculated that she may end up in 2076, where James created The Lazarus.

We went through several versions of what it could be. At the end of La Brea Season 2, you see all the different time periods coming up, and she could have gone to any of them. Ultimately, the way the story was created, we didn’t have much time to investigate the world of 1965.

Eve's Back - La Brea Season 3 Episode 6
(Arianna Fregoso (NBCUniversal ))

So, we didn’t want to make it too far from what our ordinary world would look like because of resources, and having to build a set from the year 2200 is more challenging than something from 1965. So, we wanted a different time, but not one that was so different from our own.

That’s fair. I know several people, myself included, have also discussed the fact that even though there was time travel, we didn’t see the aftermath of the stuff that the guys did in 2021. There were minor changes to the timeline, but we didn’t see the after-effects on a show like Timeless.

Getting into that makes the story a little baroque and confusing and detracts from the story’s emotion, getting caught up in the time travel rules and what would change.

I like those kinds of stories, but for a show on NBC, I think the audience is more interested in the emotional stories and less about the ramifications of what it means to change the past or the future.

The Dream Team - La Brea Season 3 Episode 4
(Mark Taylor/NBC)

If we were writing it on the Sy-Fy Channel, we might have delved into more of the fun science fiction component of it. Our audience is a little more interested in the emotional and character relationships.

That’s fair. Were you happy with how each character’s arc ended?

Yeah, definitely. The end of this show is emotional for all of them because we get to see how far they’ve traveled and how much they’ve changed since we met them in Season 1.

There are things and places that we had talked about bringing them that didn’t occur because of time and the limited number of episodes in Season 3.

But at the same time, we knew what the finale was and knew we had these six episodes to wrap it up. We were grateful we had the chance to do that because some shows never have that opportunity, and characters’ arcs might never feel complete.

Reuniting with Dad - La Brea Season 3 Episode 6
(Arianna Fregoso (NBCUniversal ))

Even if there are some places where we might have wanted to bring characters, we could still craft emotional endings for all of them and give the audience the sense of closure they deserve.

What was the purpose of making Leyla Maya’s accomplice? Was she ever really interested in Izzy, or was it all a game?

She was interested in Izzy. They connected, but we didn’t want to make it a simple story for them where they met, got along, and fell in love.

Right away, Izzy realizes that Layla is an imperfect person, and she has been scarred by the death of her brother and her father and has chosen to do something that she shouldn’t do.

New Connections - La Brea Season 3 Episode 3
(Mark Taylor/NBC)

So, it gives Izzy a moment of reflection and realization that not everything is perfect. It was a way to complicate their relationship and the story and give Maya another layer to her more extensive plan.

Many fans felt cheated by that because they initially thought it was a well-written, queer storyline, and they were hoping Izzy and Leyla would then end up being the queer, lesbian couple to root for.

Oh. It’s interesting how stories evolve. We wanted to give them a satisfying story, but many things entered into the storytelling process. Izzy’s character has come a long way from the show’s beginning.

She’s someone who, when we meet her, she’s a little naive and a typical teenager, but she has an opportunity to grow and challenge herself.

An Ingenious Plan - La Brea Season 3 Episode 6
(Mark Taylor/NBC)

Despite everything that happened, she has a lot of growth and understands who she is by the end of the series. That was our ultimate goal for the show and her character.

Do you think the only way Levi and Gavin’s friendship could heal was for Levi to sacrifice himself?

There was definitely a faster way to do it. It was a massive sacrifice because he has wronged Gavin several times by having an affair with his wife and taking away their opportunity to return home in Season 2.

This was part of his redemption arc, proving what Gavin meant to him and making amends. If Levi hadn’t died, they probably would have healed their relationship because Levi would have found another way to apologize to them. Gavin is forgiving, but it might have taken some more time.

Grieving Levi - La Brea Season 3 Episode 5
(Mark Taylor/NBC)

How will Petra heal after learning everything that her mother has done?

That’s a tough one. She’s definitely someone who’s been through the wringer, and having a parent like that can’t be easy.

She has formed a friendship with Scott in the season, and we tried to speak to that at the end of the show that Scott would look out for her, but it’s a traumatic period for a girl of that age.

We didn’t necessarily focus our story attention too much on her. While an important character, she’s not she wasn’t who we wanted to focus our emotional weight on at the end of the series.

No, but I loved how her storyline helped Scott grow this year. He had more of an arc than we’ve ever seen.

Scott's Growth - La Brea Season 3 Episode 6
(NBC)

He’s come into his own as a heroic person, as someone who has a purpose. It was reflected in that final scene when he found the woman he loved but could never propose to her. He shows her how he’s grown and how different he is.

So, he’s someone who’s come a long way. He’s someone who was governed by fear and had a dependence on marijuana at the beginning of the show but has overcome those things and becomes an adult and a man.

On that note, what are the chances of a follow-up movie so we can check in on Scott and his new girlfriend or Lucas and Veronica or the Harrises?

I would love to do that. I have ideas for where the characters would go. I have ideas for a different spin-off, where you would take some of the existing characters, bring in a new cast, bring them back to 10,000 BC, and go on another adventure.

Together Again - La Brea Season 3 Episode 6
(Arianna Fregoso (NBCUniversal ))

I would love the opportunity to do that. But for now, this is the end of this story. You never know what will happen in the future. Shows have a long life, and stranger things have happened.

I would love a follow-up. I would like to see the Harrises in therapy coping or see Lucas, Veronica, and Scott still hanging out. I’ve grown to love these characters over the last three seasons.

Were you happy with how La Brea Season 3 ended? Would you be interested in a La Brea follow-up movie or spin-off series?

On the series finale of La Brea, the survivors work hard to find a way home to their loved ones and unite together in the final battle. Our final review!

With that, we say goodbye to La Brea and the sinkhole survivors.

It was an action-packed and emotional finale, cramming too many reunions into La Brea Season 3 Episode 6. The series needed another few episodes to make some of these emotional scenes breathe better, but at least most of the characters got closure.

A few characters had to deal with the consequences of their actions, making it a bittersweet finale, too.

United - La Brea Season 3 Episode 6
(Arianna Fregoso (NBCUniversal ))

While La Brea was a sci-fi adventure series, it's always been a family drama, and almost every character proved how far they'd go for their loved ones.

In many ways, Sam had one of the best character arcs in La Brea Season 3 as he learned to cope without Riley, and he realized that he wanted to become an even better person and father when she recovered.

Reuniting with Dad - La Brea Season 3 Episode 6
(Arianna Fregoso (NBCUniversal ))

Sam had been so obsessed with finding Riley that it became his sole focus, making him afraid he let her down. It was a relief that he located her quickly at Cedars Hospital.

Sam: I’m sorry it took so long to find you.

Riley: You’re forgiven. It’s a bit of a trip from 10,000 BC.

🔗 permalink: You’re forgiven. It’s a bit of a trip from 10,000 BC.

As soon as Sam realized Riley was poorly injured, he became super doc. He brought to mind Thony De La Rosa from The Cleaning Lady since he also wanted to try an experimental technique on his child.

It doesn't matter how old your child is. If you're a medical doctor, you'll do anything in your capacity to save them, no matter the consequences. Thankfully, Sam was able to combine his medical skills with the prayers of a loving dad.

Sam: I’m going to be a different father, and if your mother will let me, a different husband. But none of this works if you’re not there.

🔗 permalink: I’m going to be a different father, and if your mother will let me, a different husband. But…

After all that Sam had been through, all he wanted was for his family to be reunited, but it wouldn't mean anything without his daughter.

Sam's Goodbye - La Brea Season 3 Episode 6
(NBC)

After not seeing Paara all season, Ty got a lead on his wife in the series finale after interrogating some guards.

This was one of the most brutal scenes because no one wanted to believe Paara was dead, and Scott and Lucas worked hard to comfort Ty.

Paara had changed Ty's life, and his trip to 2021 had cemented how important she was to him. It was a relief when Ty and Scott found her in an abandoned village.

The storyline showed that love conquers all, as cheesy as that sounds. It's a rare thing for a sci-fi adventure series to portray so many compelling love stories.

Locating Evidence - La Brea
(NBC)

The majority of the finale focused on the Harris family reuniting. Gavin's sister, Helena, has been a welcome addition, and she got along famously with Izzy, who loved being part of the mission.

More background would have been helpful here to understand why Helena understood Maya's plan or why the soldiers also captured Josh.

Izzy is her father's daughter, and watching her smash a military wagon to carry out the mission was fascinating. The last thing they expected to find was Josh inside.

Josh emerged as a genuinely sympathetic character. While Gavin and Izzy were happy to see him, with all the chaos happening, there was no time for an emotional reunion, such as the one that Sam shared with Riley.

A New Plan Hatches - La Brea Season 3 Episode 6
(Arianna Fregoso (NBCUniversal ))

Josh seemed like the kid who missed out on so much while Izzy got to have adventures with their dad. It's disappointing we didn't see many family scenes of them together.

That said, the action scenes of the entire Harris family together in the jeep with the T-rex chasing them were epic! Gavin knew that the dinosaur would destroy the military base, giving them a chance to grab the chip and survive.

It's only because of Helena that Josh survived. Maya was determined to get that chip and trade it for Josh's life, but Helena shot her, proving how loyal she was to her new family.

It's disappointing that we couldn't see Helena interact with the Harrises more, but they needed their own reunion with Eve.

Eve's Back - La Brea Season 3 Episode 6
(Arianna Fregoso (NBCUniversal ))

This was the first time Natalie Zea appeared as Eve in La Brea Season 3, and the writers made the most of it by showing her in emotional scenes with Gavin and the kids.

Gavin mentioned Eve's wisdom tree in La Brea Season 3 Episode 5, which was a pivotal part of the series finale. They celebrated milestones there, which led Gavin to believe that Eve would go there when they couldn't locate her elsewhere.

It was their magnetic connection that brought them back together in the end, and it was endearing that Eve and Josh ran to each other, and their reunion and embrace mirrored Eve and Izzy's from La Brea Season 2 Episode 3.

The Harisses literally walked out into the sunset together. It was the happy ending they deserved.

Together Again - La Brea Season 3 Episode 6
(Arianna Fregoso (NBCUniversal ))

After three seasons, we'll assume that the Harrises will stay lifelong friends with Sam and Riley, but it would have been nice to see the next steps for Josh and Riley. They were a young couple in love, and we were rooting for them.

And what about Izzy? The showrunner spoke about her maturing this season, but was it worth getting her heart broken? So many unanswered questions still.

At least Lucas and Veronica received a happy ending and are still friends with Scott. Lucas has changed so much since MaryBeth died. Becoming friends with Scott and falling in love with Veronica changed him.

He's finally confident that he can be the man his family deserves no matter where they live.

Lucas: Before all this, I was just an angry guy. I was confused all the time. I didn’t trust anybody. But then, I found my best friend, the woman I love, and I found myself. I’m scared, but with your help, I think I can be this guy anywhere we go.

🔗 permalink: Before all this, I was just an angry guy. I was confused all the time. I didn’t trust…

Scott's Growth - La Brea Season 3 Episode 6
(NBC)

Scott also matured and cared more about other people. Introducing Petra into his life helped him evolve. It was deeply satisfying to see Scott become a "surrogate uncle" to her.

He wouldn't let anything happen to her; she was still in her life when they returned to LA. Scott was finally someone he could be proud of, so he showed that to his former fiance, Emily.

It was an emotional and action-packed hour. Most characters received closure and happy endings, so it checked off the necessary series finale boxes.

However, parts of the episode felt rushed. Much of La Brea Season 3 felt that way with the shortened season and only six episodes. Many emotional arcs needed longer to breathe.

Father & Daughter Chat - La Brea Season 3 Episode 6
(Mark Taylor/NBC)

We would have liked to explore 1965 more in-depth and what Maya wanted with Josh.

Despite wanting a few more episodes, it was time for La Brea to end. You could drag out a rescue plan only so long before viewers lose interest.

While most of the characters got the closure they deserved, it would be wonderful if the showrunner developed a follow-up movie to update us on our favorite characters. You never know!

La Brea was a rare treat, combining a family drama with sci-fi adventure.

Harris Family Reunion - La Brea Season 3 Episode 6
(Arianna Fregoso (NBCUniversal ))

Audiences grew to love those characters over the past three seasons, and it was an honor to cover this show. I'll miss it.

Over to you, La Brea Fanatics. Were you happy with the ending? Were you excited to see Eve again? Which family reunion was your favorite?

What else do you wish was included in the series finale? Let us know in the comments below.

There's a flashback of Gavin and Eve by the wisdom tree. It's covered with notes and photos, including their first anniversary. She hands him an ultrasound photo off the tree, and he's so excited. He wants to learn about all future pregnancies that way as they embrace.

Then, we see Gavin and the group at a gas station in 1965. They're headed to one of Rysander's base operations to destroy the chip and find Eve. Sam returns with a lead. He thinks Riley is at Ceders Hospital. Helena says they have limited time and gives him the car, saying they'll find another.

In 10,000 BC, Ty informs the others that the blue aurora could return them home to 2021. Ruth offers to gather the others, but Scott refuses to go until they locate Petra. Scott, Lucas, and Ty interrogate the guards about Petra and find Paara's purse in the jeep, which makes Ty panic.

The guard admits they found some dead villagers about five miles east. The men comfort Ty and head that way to search.

Gavin knocks out a guard at the Pasadena Research facility but finds Eve's cell empty. Helena finds an order to relocate a prisoner to the base in 10,000 BC and thinks Maya is on to them.

Sam finds Riley at the hospital, but she's not in good shape. She has a torn diaphragm, and Sam wants to get her to a modern hospital, but she's having difficulty breathing.

In 10,000 BC, Scott, Lucas, and Veronica help Ty look for Paara. Scott tries to get Ty to talk, and Ty admits Paara changed his life. Ty also admits the 2021 version of Scott told him about his broken engagement, and he encourages Scott to fight for her.

In 1965, Sam is dressed as a surgeon and doing an experimental lap, which won't be done for another decade. He promises to be a better father, but she needs to pull through.

Back in 10,000 BC, while Gavin distracted the guards, Izzy crashed into a military vehicle. Both were shocked to see Josh in the back of the car. He had been in a cell with Eve before being transferred here.

They're confused about where Eve is, wondering if Helena found her when Sam arrives. Sam shares an emotional goodbye with Gavin when he explains he's taking Riley to 2021 for medical attention.

Lucas and Veronica have a long talk about how he's ready to return to 2021. She and Scott made a significant impact on his life. Veronica starts having cramps, and he reassures her the baby will make it.

Scott and Ty find Paara, and a beam is stuck on her. She knew Ty would come, and he reassured her this was home. Scott returns with another log for leverage to ease it off of her.

Another dinosaur arrives as soon as they do, so they run to Lucas's jeep.

1965 Helena arrives and says she and Eve fought them off, but more arrived. It seemed skeptical, but Eve wanted them to stop the war against Maya, so everyone returned to 10,000 BC again.

The entire group stands united as they send Veronica through the 2021 aurora. Gavin thanked Lucas for staying to help. They see a T-rex and decide to use it to their advantage.

The Harris family, Scott, and Lucas head toward the base in the jeep, with the dinosaur following them. They lead it right to it, so Maya and her guards are distracted. They make their move as soon as it breaks down the gate and attacks the base.

Scott sees Petra being interrogated by the guards, so he and Lucas race off to rescue her. The Harrises find the chip as the men and Petra return.

Maya stops them from leaving and demands the chip, but Ty and the fort tribe arrive with bows and arrows and shoot Maya. Chaos ensues as Scott and Lucas fight military soldiers.

One guard with a knife tries to attack Izzy, but Leyla saves her. Gavin interrupted their moment. The aurora disappears, so they need a new plan.

Just as the entire group is about to leave on Gavin's time machine, Maya arrives and pulls a gun on Josh. She demands the chip for his life. Gavin almost falters, but Josh screams not to. Gavin throws it in the air, and Helena shoots Maya.

What an exciting moment as the plane takes off. When they land, Gavin promises to keep in touch with Helena. They stop at the hospital so Josh and Riley can reunite.

Veronica and Lucas are checking her sonogram as Scott interrupts the moment. They're like family now. After that, he finds his old fiance, proves that he's changed, and asks for another chance.

Sam reunites with the rest of his family, and runs into Gavin at the hospital. Gavin remembers where Eve could be.

Gavin leads the kids to the wisdom tree, and after hours, Eve finally arrives and embraces Josh first, and then Izzy and Gavin. The reunited family walks off into the sunset.

More than one traitor was revealed. Read our review of La Brea Season 3 Episode 5 to learn how their actions affected the search for Eve and the tragic consequences.

This should have been titled "Traitors and Suspects."

While Gavin strived to locate Eve, most of La Brea Season 3 Episode 5 focused on discovering who betrayed him. Every time we were sure we figured out who the culprit was, another suspect popped up.

However, we were shocked by the second traitor. They weren't even on our radar.

Showdown - La Brea
(Mark Taylor/NBC)

We're nearing the end of La Brea, and I still have more questions than answers. It's been such a fast-paced season that could have used a few more episodes to flesh out some character arcs.

It was evident that Maya was the ringleader after Scott's confrontation with her on La Brea Season 3 Episode 4, but her motives were still unclear. Was she just over-ambitious and wanted to control time machines? Would she really risk her daughter's safety to get it?

The Ruse - La Brea Season 3 Episode 4
(Mark Taylor/NBC)

Gavin: Maya, what are you doing?

Maya: I’m taking back what’s mine.

🔗 permalink: I’m taking back what’s mine.

While Maya thought she had control, she underestimated Gavin and his friends. They had already proven they would do anything to reunite their families.

Even when the soldiers followed Maya's orders and chaos ensued, the men were rescued again.

I figured we would see Helena again but wasn't expecting her to make such an entrance, shooting the soldiers and rescuing Gavin and his friends.

It's too bad we don't have more background on Helena and Maya. While seeing Maya betray people was tiring, flashbacks of them working on this black ops project would have explained why Helena distrusted Maya and learned of her true nature.

Helena: We have to stop her. We have to get to that base now.

Protecking Helena - La Brea Season 3 Episode 5
(NBC Promo Screenshot)

Unexpectedly, I fell for Helena. In her eyes, Gavin betrayed her by letting her take the heat for everything. He disappeared instead of introducing her to his family. It's understandable why she's so angry.

It's impressive that she still saved him and wants to help him find Eve. While she wasn't ready to forgive him, she was trying to work together. Helena wasn't at all like James portrayed her to be. She may resent Gavin, but not for destroying their father.

Gavin: I can’t imagine how difficult that was for you.

Helena: For years, I was on the run. You had your family. I had no one. I’ve never had a real family, so when you promised to include me in yours, it was big.

Gavin: Hey, I’m sorry. I was a different person then.

🔗 permalink: Hey, I’m sorry. I was a different person then.

When an alligator attacked and Helena went overboard, Gavin proved his loyalty to his sister. He didn't hesitate before jumping in and saving her, while Sam's gun skills also proved helpful.

While they still have some progress before they become a happy family, Gavin shows that Helena is important to him, and he's eager to show her off to the rest of their family.

Girl Talk - La Brea Season 3 Episode 5
(Mark Taylor/NBC)

It's heartbreaking that La Brea waited until the end for Izzy to build some relationships. Of course, Veronica lacked some gal pals with Riley gone, too. Izzy wanted some happiness with Leyla, but she didn't know how. She felt overwhelmed by family responsibility.

Veronica: Izzy, if you both like each other, I’m sure you’ll find the right time to go stargazing.

Izzy: What if there isn’t a right time? How do you and Lucas make it work down here?

Veronica: We figure it out one day at a time. That’s all you can do.

🔗 permalink: We figure it out one day at a time. That’s all you can do.

We got cheated. So many fans wanted to watch Izzy and Leyla's relationship develop on screen. We haven't seen them since they almost kissed by the fire.

When we saw them again, it didn't feel romantic. It felt like Leyla had an agenda. She said everything to keep Izzy distracted and even offered to help locate Gavin, but something was off.

Who would have guessed, though, that Leyla was the other traitor? Initially, it looked like Joseph was the culprit, but he had always respected Gavin and Sam, which seemed fishy, too. Ruth would only cover for someone she loved.

Veronica's Suspicions - La Brea Season 3 Episode 5
(Mark Taylor/NBC)

How could Leyla have believed Maya? Did Leyla ever really care about Izzy, or was Izzy part of the mission to distract her so Maya could get closer to Gavin?

Initially, it seemed that the writers had done a well-written queer storyline, but now, we question Leyla's motives and if any part of their relationship was genuine.

While it hurt seeing Izzy's young heartbroken, they still had more complicated issues. While Leyla attempted to fix things by letting them listen in on the Air Force radio, was it too late? Did her actions lead to the devastating consequences near the base?

Since Levi got captured in La Brea Season 3 Episode 1, it seemed possible that he was working with Maya. You couldn't blame Scott for distrusting him. It was refreshing to see that Scott supported Gavin and a relief that Levi was a double agent and, ultimately, Team Gavin.

Scott: So that helicopter was saving you, not capturing you?

Levi: Yes.

Scott: And they put you in that cell to get information out of you?

Levi: Because they still believe I’m on their side, which I’m not. My allegiance is to my friends, and that includes you.

Scott in Jail - La Brea Season 3 Episode 5
(NBC Promo Screenshot)

Poor Scott. That beatdown Levi gave him was harsh but ultimately convinced Maya that Levi worked for her, not his friends. Thankfully, Maya underestimated Levi too because he and Scott escaped and were on their way to rescue Eve when the trouble started.

Izzy is great, but she always shows up at the worst times. Levi loved Izzy as part of his family, so he was most concerned about protecting her as soon as she arrived. That left the guards open to attack other people.

Levi only wanted to prove to Gavin and the others how much he regretted blowing their chances to get home and wrecking Gavin's family.

Levi was willing to sacrifice anything to prove himself. While he died a hero, he should have repaired those relationships before parting.

Levi's Plan - La Brea Season 3 Episode 5
(Mark Taylor/NBC)

We suspected some important characters wouldn't survive the finale. Levi's death isn't even that much of a surprise, but it crushed Izzy and Gavin. He's still family, and Izzy will suffer from guilt because she didn't shoot her bow in time.

Over to you, La Brea Fanatics.

With the La Brea series finale nearly here, will Gavin and the others be able to save Eve with Levi's information, or did their friend die in vain? Do you think there'll be more deaths in the series finale?

Gavin and Ty are at Eve's favorite spot, the wisdom tree. Gavin is relieved to have the chip but is distrustful about who's on the other side of the computer. Ty also suspects Eve's capturer is related to the secret project.

Izzy talks to Veronica about her new relationship with Leyla and how to priortize everything in 10,000 BC. Gavin needs Izzy, and he shows her and Ty the latest message, which says to bring the chip to Cavenga Peak before sunset.

He and Ty tell Maya the message, but Gavin needs time to think.

Sam finds Lucas in the woods. He thought Lucas was about to run off and find Scott alone. While Lucas is angry and worried about Scott, he wants a few minutes to tell his mom about the baby.

Maya follows Gavin. When he announces he is going to destroy the chip, she pulls a gun on him. Chaos ensues as Ty and Sam arrive with guns. Gavin says she overplayed her hand when she insisted on the trade and realizes she only cared about the memories of the chip.

When Veronica drops something in the council room, she finds a secret passageway, and inside is an Air Force radio. She and Lucas suspect there is a traitor within the fort.

As Scott is thrown into a cell, he sees that Levi is there and alive. Levi mentions they keep interrogating him about Gavin. Scott informs him that Maya is a traitor, and Levi urges him to think of something that might help with their release. The guards come for Levi again.

Soldiers arrive to help Maya with Gavin, Sam, and Ty, who fight back. Someone shoots at the soldiers. It's Helena who arrived through the aurora. She's angry that Maya got the chip and tells the guys Maya plans to sell her plan to the highest bidder.

Ruth wants to address these kidnappings, but Joseph doesn't care because the "sky people" are putting the fort in danger. Ruth defends Veronica, and then Veronica accuses one of them of betraying them, citing what she found.

Ruth calls for a recess, but when Veronica and Lucas try to talk to her, they learn she left abruptly.

Izzy thanks Leyla for getting to go hiking. They share a moment until they find dead soldiers, and Izzy panics, worried about her dad. Leyla comforts her, saying she is an excellent tracker.

When Maya returns to the base, a cute guard greets her and brings out Levi. It almost looks like he's working for her.

Levi returns to the cell with the chip, and Scott is suspicious. Levi tells him he joined Rysander because it was the only way to return to 10,000 BC, but he's not on their side.

Scott doesn't trust Levi, but Levi needs him to play along as Maya arrives. Levi interrogates and tortures Scott about his paper and suggests moving him to the long-term detention center.

Gavin tries to apologize to Helena, but she's mad that she took the heat for everything and she never met his family. An alligator attacks and Elena goes under. Gavin jumps in, too, and saves his sister.  She's grateful, and he promises she will meet the family this time.

Sam finds tire marks, so they are near the base.

As Lucas and Veronica confront Ruth, they realize she's covering for someone. Leyla takes Izzy to the double aurora because she wants to start a new life with her in 2021, but Izzy is suspicious and doesn't want to leave their families.

Veronica, Ruth, and Lucas arrive, revealing that Leyla was working with Maya and Maya lied. Leyla said that Maya swore no one would get hurt. Lucas and Ruth beg her to fix this, so they spy on the radio and hear that the military has acquired four targets.

Levi and Scott start towards the detention center. Levi tells Scott that Eve is being held there. Izzy spots Levi and Scott. A guard tries to shoot her, and Levi attacks him while another kicks Scott.

Chaos ensues. Another guard pulls a knife on Scott, but Lucas arrives and attacks him. Izzy tells them about Gavin, but Levi won’t let her come because these are trained soldiers. He kisses her and runs off.

Levi spots the soldiers and shoots them, giving his friends a chance. Another shoots him, and Izzy tries to stop it with her bow, but the gunshot gets through. Gavin and Izzy struggle to say goodbye. In his final moments, Levi tells them where Eve is.

The entire crew finds the double aurora and realizes Eve, Josh, and Riley are in 1965. Sam, Gavin, Izzy, and Helena head there to find them and destroy Maya's infrastructure.

Now, that was an emotional hour of television.

La Brea Season 3 Episode 4 was one of the season's most poignant and action-packed episodes. It intertwined multiple timelines and explained the urgency of retrieving that microchip.

Let's discuss how several members of the team worked together in multiple timelines to save the day and how all this time-jumping might affect the future.

Fire Near the Fort - La Brea
(Mark Taylor/NBC)

Intertwining timelines made this a fast-paced episode and brought back the message in the bottle method that worked on La Brea Season 1 Episode 5 when Gavin and Izzy received Eve's letter revealing that she was alive.

This time, Sam suggested sending a message to Gavin in 2021 to find the microchip that would save Eve's life. It's difficult to tell if the voice behind the computer was playing games with the men, but no one wanted to risk Eve's life by doubting it.

An Adventurous Plan - La Brea Season 3 Episode 4
(Mark Taylor/NBC)

I appreciated how they had Scott intercept the letter in 2021, even if he was afraid he was in a darker place. Scott needed to be visited by Sam and Ty and sprinkled with some positive vibes.

The Scott in 2021 had given up on life and trusted no one and nothing, least of all these strangers who believed in time travel. It was almost amusing how determined Ty was to get Scott to trust him by preparing his favorite lunch because he thought Scott needed a friend.

Scott was suffering in 2021 as badly as Gavin was. His brother had just died, and he had just lost the girlfriend he had planned on proposing to. It made sense that he'd given up, but Ty needed him to see that he still had people who cared about him.

Sam: Scott, clearly, people haven’t given up on you. They sent you that message from 10,000 BC because they believed in you and were your friends.

Ty: I know it’s hard to see, but we are your friends. You can trust us. Please let us see the message.

I had initially hoped that Scott and Maya would be allies as they searched for Petra, but Maya appeared more shady as Scott's place in this plan was revealed.

Digging into Maya's Secrets - La Brea Season 3 Episode 4
(Mark Taylor/NBC)

After Gavin had another memory revealing Scott's research paper at the base, Scott soon realized Maya had given it to Gavin.

While I love Scott, he should not have confronted Maya alone. That was a disaster waiting to happen. It was easy for her to pretend that the military guards attacked and kidnapped Scott and appear innocent.

Gavin had his own problems when he met his estranged sister, Helena. Helena made quite the first impression, wielding a gun as she kidnapped her brother. While I ended up softening towards her, I first disliked her since no one was allowed to hurt Gavin.

Gavin: Okay, what exactly is this? Who are you?

Woman: I’m the woman you’re going to follow out the back door. Move now!

Gavin: And if I say no?

Woman (pulling a gun): I don’t think you will.

🔗 permalink: I don’t think you will.

Since Gavin had been drunk so often, he didn't remember her or the secret project. He couldn't believe he'd ever hurt people.

Gavin: I’m not that kind of person.

Helena: You are when it’s the only way to stop something worse from happening.

It soon became obvious that Helena worked diligently to get Gavin on the time-traveling project so they could dismantle it together. I don't blame Gavin for not believing her since he was still handcuffed.

It was so overwhelming for Gavin to learn he had more family. We must consider that this was before he met James, and he's suddenly hearing about James's ruthless plans to use this project.

Using Gavin's thumbprint to get the microchip was similar to how Gavin activated James's portal with his handprint in La Brea Season 2 Episode 8. There were many Harris family throwbacks throughout the episode.

Helena: Gavin, I’m your sister.

Gavin: You’re kidding me?

Helena: Half-sister, technically. You’re the only family I have in this world. Our father wasn’t a parent to either of us. What he really cared about was his work.

Once they'd obtained the microchip, the excitement began. Helena and Gavin found dual auroras. She wanted to take him through the red one to 1965 when the project originated.

(NBC Promo Screenshot)

But Ty and Sam arrived, begging Gavin to give Ty the microchip so he could return to 10,000 BC and save Eve.

Helena sounded similar to James when she reminded Gavin that the project was bigger than his family.

Ty: She might be your family, but after what we’ve been through, I’d call us family, too. Deep down, you know I’d never lead you astray. Please give me the chip and let me bring it back.

🔗 permalink: She might be your family, but after what we’ve been through, I’d call us family, too. Deep…

I was relieved he gave the chip to Ty, but I don't think we've seen the last of Helena.

Sadly, the microchip wasn't the only problem. A massive fire broke out near the fort, which affected Sam more than most. He and Lucas led the rescue mission to get everyone closer to safety, but Sam was on edge for most of the walk.

We even saw the return of Lucas the Animal Whisperer. While Sam wanted to leave the injured wolf pup they had found, Lucas carried it with him and made everyone swoon.

Sam's Prayer - La Brea Season 3 Episode 4
(NBC (Promo Screenshot))

However, Lucas soon realized that Sam was off his game, and it was refreshing to see him support Sam. These two have such a strong bond, but usually, Sam acts like a father figure toward Lucas, so it was nice to see the support reciprocated.

Lucas: Dude, I don’t know anything about fire.

Sam: None of us do. It’s completely unpredictable. It takes whoever and whatever it wants.

🔗 permalink: None of us do. It’s completely unpredictable. It takes whoever and whatever it wants.

As someone who also experienced a house fire, I related to Sam's trauma. It's something you don't forget, even if you manage to save everyone. Sometimes, it's by sheer luck and instinct since fire is blinding.

Even with how he felt about fire, when the wolf pup ran after the worsening fire, Sam chased after it. When Lucas caught up to him, he questioned why Sam would risk his life for the dog.

The wolf pup reminded Sam of the family dog he couldn't save in the house fire years ago. Sam still felt guilt about letting Riley down all those years ago, even though Lucas assured him he would only let her down if they died.

Into the Fire - La Brea Season 3 Episode 4
(NBC (Promo Screenshot))

Lucas has evolved so much. Was he wrong not to show support to Veronica? Absolutely. But it made sense why was concerned about her and the baby during the massive fire.

Veronica proved herself to everyone when came up with the idea of shooting Sam's gun at the dam to loosen the logs so it would loosen and flood the area and save the fort.

When Veronica found Lucas, Sam, and the pup, it only mattered that everyone was safe. Lucas and Veronica's argument was over. While that pup was initially Lucas's, he was now glued to Sam's side.

After a hard day, things became better when Ty returned and reunited with Sam and Gavin. But an enemy lurked nearby. How much danger is everyone in?

Protecting Their Own - La Brea Season 3 Episode 4
(Mark Taylor/NBC)

Key Points That Changed in 2021

While the men successfully retrieved the microchip, Ty or Helena divulged information Sam and Gavin weren't aware of yet. Since I covered some changes on La Brea Season 3 Episode 3, these are all new.

  • Ty reassures Sam that his relationship with Riley is much better.
  • Ty and Sam tell Scott he has a better life with friends who support him.
  • Elena fills Gavin in on their family history, who doesn't know anything about James yet.
Izzy & Gavin - La Brea Season 3 Episode 4
(Mark Taylor/NBC)

Sometimes, knowing about the future can affect it. We're praying that everyone still exists. Knowing that the red aurora sent people to 1965 gives the men a hint that Josh and Riley were probably transported there, and they have a viable lead.

Hopefully, now that the dream team is back in 10,000 BC, we'll see them find Eve, Josh, and Riley. While I enjoyed the time-traveling arc, I'm ready for everyone to be back in one timeline working together.

Over to you, La Brea Fanatics. What has been your favorite part of the final season? Were you excited to see Scott in 2021? Did you enjoy learning more about Sam's backstory?

On La Brea Season 3 Episode 4, a massive fire starts near the Fort: Sam and Lucas lead a rescue mission. Gavin is kidnapped by a woman connected to his past.

In 2021, Sam and Ty are nervous because Gavin's contact is late. Suddenly, a blonde woman enters and sits down. He remembers something as she mentions she's the only one meeting him.

She pulls a gun on him and orders him to follow her out the back door. Ty and Sam try to follow them, but she nearly hits them with her car.

While Sam examines Gavin in 10,000 BC, the computer beeps, so Gavin responds they know that Sierra is Maya Schmidt. Of course, the computer plays more mind games and taunts they have Eve, and they'll trade it for the computer chip he remembered.

Sam returns with Maya and decides they need to send a message to Gavin in 2021 through the tarpits to say they need it. While Gavin thinks it's insane, they agree to try it. Just then, Izzy arrives, panicked, and shows them an explosive fire only a few miles away.

Sam helps people evacuate and tells Lucas that Gavin took Maya, Izzy, and Scott with him to the tar pits. He needs Lucas and Judah to help him.

Gavin tries to send a message in a bottle at the tar pits, but Scott fears being the recipient in 2021 since he was in a dark place then. Scott tells Maya what a great kid Petra is and how he hated losing her. He also inquires why she wanted to meet with him initially.

Lucas finds an injured wolf pup as the group walks to safety. While Sam wants to leave it, Lucas carries it as they continue on.

Back in 2021, Ty and Sam put an alert out for Gavin. Ty wants to get back to Paara. Sam wonders if his relationship with Riley has improved, and Ty assures him it has come a long way. 2021 Scott calls Gavin's phone, and Ty answers.

Scott has difficulty believing in time travel and doesn't like that no one can find Gavin. He refuses to give them the message, but Ty is determined to get Scott to trust them by preparing his favorite lunch.

Lucas finds Sam praying and is worried about him. He realizes after talking to him that Sam has been in a massive before. Sam tells him that he barely got his family out of a house fire when Riley was a child, and Lucas reminds him that he did save them.

Veronica shoots the dam, and after a few shots, it loosens and begins to flood.

Elena takes Gavin to the double aurora. One goes to 10,000 BC, and one to 1965, when the project originated. Ty and Sam arrive wanting to take the chip back with Ty. A fight ensues, with Gavin torn. Eventually, Ty gets the chip and goes through the blue aurora.

Scott sees the scars on Maya and confronts her alone. She returns to Izzy and Gavin, saying Scott was captured.

Veronica is scared she can't find Sam and Lucas, but she finally finds them in a cave. The dog has bonded with Sam. Ty has an emotional reunion with Sam and Gavin while Maya watches.

After they return, Ruth mentions the winds have changed direction, which could damage the fort. Ruth mentions a river and a dam nearby that could flood it. The men don't like this idea, but they agree to help when Veronica volunteers.

Gavin and his group watch the animals flee the fire. He has trouble breathing because of the smoke. Scott suggests soaking some of the extra t-shirts as filters. He and Maya go ahead as Izzy guides Gavin to rest.

She grows concerned as Gavin has another vision — this time of Scott and a research paper written by him.

Back in 2021, Gavin demands to know who the mystery woman was. Her name is Elena, but she won't divulge how he knows him. She only reveals that the secret mission was to turn pilots into time traveling machines, and she ensured he was on that mission.

Elena explains once they were both on that mission they planned to destroy it together, but he's skeptical.

Back in 10,000 BC, Gavin questions Scott about the term paper, saying he had a memory about it and that the person who showed it to him had scars on their arm. The fire is worsening, so Scott goes to find Maya.

Elena takes Gavin to a safety deposit box and needs his thumbprint to help open the box. The microchip is inside.

Back in 10,000, Sam realizes the dam is broken, so Veronica suggests using Sam's gun to destroy the support beam and loosen the dam. The fire worsens, and the pup takes off in that direction. Sam chases it, and Lucas follows them.

2021 Scott remains rude to Ty, even after he prepared his favorite lunch. Ty remembered Scott confiding in him that he was messy and read comic books after his brother died, so he made his favorite grilled cheese as a comfort.

The guys recognized the flowers and realized Scott was mourning a break-up, and Scott was going to propose and now given up on himself and others. Ty and Sam convince him that he still has friends and they really need his help.

The note reads they need to find the microchip to save Eve. While it seems odd, Ty believes it's important.

Meanwhile, Elena tells Gavin that they are siblings, and he's overwhelmed.

In 10,000 BC, Sam rushes into the fire to save the wolf pup. Lucas wonders why he did that, and Sam admits he never saved the family dog in the house fire years ago and felt he let Riley down. He still feels like he is, but Lucas says he only will if they die.

Gavin faced his past in multiple timelines as Maya Schmidt helped him remember the secret mission. Ty changed history and got closure with his ex-wife. Our review!

Facing your inner demons can set you free.

Gavin, Ty, Izzy, and Leyla faced their pasts on La Brea Season 3 Episode 3 and either started new journeys or got closure to move on.

Were these journeys beneficial, or did some of them alter history? Will we see the effects of these decisions before the series ends?

Remembering His Past - La Brea
(Mark Taylor/NBC)

The Gavin of 2021 had just as much difficulty believing Ty as Sam did, but the stakes were higher because they needed Gavin to access info on the Air Force base. He didn't remember anything about the secret project in either timeline.

Ty: I can’t explain the gaps in your memory, and I understand why this is frightening, but if you explore this with us, it will be worth it. The lives of the people you love depend on this.

🔗 permalink: I can’t explain the gaps in your memory, and I understand why this is frightening, but if you…

Since Gavin was in such a bad spot, he bailed. He couldn't deal with the responsibility of helping others yet when he could barely take care of himself. Even though Sam and Ty had their issues, they focused on recentering Gavin.

Ty's Inner Demons - La Brea Season 3 Episode 3
(NBC Promo Screenshot)

While Ty was great at giving advice, he needed help regarding relationships. He always felt guilty about the way he left things with his ex-wife, Sophie, who then died in a drunk-driving accident.

Returning to 2021 allowed him to make amends with her and try to save her, but at what cost? How much of history would be altered because Ty needed closure?

Of course, Sophie was unaware of all of this, and she was still furious at Ty for wanting a divorce and how worthless he made her feel as a wife and writer.

That only made Ty feel worse since he only wanted to push her away because of his cancer. He didn't want her to feel unsure of herself or turn to alcohol for comfort.

Sophie: What part of I don’t want to talk to you, don’t you understand?

Ty: Soph, wait. Tonight, you’re going to make a mistake you can’t undo unless you make a change.

Sophie: Mistakes are the only thing I’m good at.

🔗 permalink: Mistakes are the only thing I’m good at.

Ty's Past - La Brea Season 3 Episode 3
(Mark Taylor/NBC)

I love that when Sam and Ty found Gavin drunk at a bar, Ty used reverse psychology on Gavin. Instead of preaching to him, Ty shared his problems and talked about Sophie's issues with alcohol.

Ty admitted that unless something changed, Sophie would die in a drunk driving accident that night. He hoped that gave him the nudge to face his fears and change for friends and family.

That was a huge burden to place on Gavin, but it worked since the three men arrived at the same AA meeting that Sophie attended.

I suspect this was during the time that Gavin felt all alone. It was after his accident, his visions were beginning, and Eve and Levi spent more time with each other than with him. Gavin needed some friends to believe in him.

Sobering Up - La Brea Season 3 Episode 3
(Mark Taylor/NBC)

It's why Gavin's speech was so inspiring. He was fueled with anger and felt broken until these new friends kept looking for him and gave him a purpose.

Gavin: Everyone in this room needs someone that gives a damn because none of us can do it on our own.

🔗 permalink: Everyone in this room needs someone that gives a damn because none of us can do it on our own.

That resonated with Sophie, too, and she agreed to listen to Ty. While I didn't want them to reunite, I'm relieved the two got closure because her death weighed on Ty. Hopefully, he'll forgive himself now.

Meanwhile, in 10,000 BC, Gavin and Sam were determined to find the Air Force base, thinking they'd get answers about Maya Schmidt. Little did they know they'd encounter both a rhino and an exploding minefield before meeting soldiers at gunpoint.

Maya Schmidt - La Brea Season 3 Episode 3
(NBC Promo Screenshot)

In a move that reminded me of Snow from Once Upon a Time, a woman cut Gavin and Sam down from the tree they're tied up against and rescued them. While Sam remained suspicious, Gavin and the woman recognized each other.

Gavin: Sam, I think we should go with her.

Sam: Why would we do that?

Gavin: Because that’s Maya Schmidt.

🔗 permalink: Because that’s Maya Schmidt.

The computer voice leading them to Sierra, aka Maya Schmidt, was too good to be true, and she didn't know anything about Eve. She only had information about the secret time-traveling project and how she erased his memories of it.

Maya felt awful about it at the time and even worse when they captured her and her daughter when she tried to spill the details about the project. She agreed to help him try to recover his memories but cautioned the mushrooms were dangerous.

While under hypnosis, Gavin remembered a safe and soon realized that Eve's capturers wanted the info inside his head. What had they got themselves into?

Tending to Dad - La Brea Season 3 Episode 3
(Mark Taylor/NBC)

The B story focused on the developing relationship between Izzy and Leyla. NBC wasn't subtle when they began the enemies to friends to lovers trope. While we only have six episodes, I would have preferred a slow-burn approach and not to be hit over the head with it.

Since we never knew much about Izzy's sexuality or dating life, except that she felt misunderstood, it's easier to believe she and Leyla would bond faster. They often think they have something to prove, such as Leyla killing her first boar.

Neither of them has ever fit in well, and they both think the only person to understand them is their brother.

It seemed like the ideal bonding experience — working together to save Leyla from the La Brea Tar Pits and the hungry boar. I even appreciated Leyla using Izzy's baby powder to feel girly in the shower. She's more of a tomboy but was making an effort for Izzy.

Leyla: It’s really nice having someone who cares. You do feel that way, don’t you?

Izzy: I do.

Leyla: I thought so.

🔗 permalink: It’s really nice having someone who cares

New Connections - La Brea Season 3 Episode 3
(Mark Taylor/NBC)

These two were really cute. Hopefully, we'll see their relationship expand more, and they'll have a happy ending.

Key Points That Changed in 2021

We've been tracking all the events that changed since Ty arrived in 2021 in La Brea Season 3 Episode 2.

  • Ty and Sam befriended each other and then befriended Gavin when he needed a support system the most.

  • Gavin agreed to get help and attended an AA meeting.

  • Ty ran into his ex-wife, Sophie, made amends, and managed to stop her from getting into a drunk driving accident.

While these are positive changes, they could still affect history, even erasing someone from history. We saw how Lucy's sister was erased from history on Timeless when the Time Team altered history. We don't want that to occur in La Brea.

However, time travel has risks, and in most sci-fi series, usually, an important character dies in the finale. So, we're still in for some emotional rides.

Over to you, La Brea Fanatics.

Are you enjoying the arc of Gavin's past? Do you want the men to change anything else in 2021 or keep it the same?

Ty and Sam try to convince Gavin about the sinkholes, who think they should warn people. Ty explains that Gavin worked on a top-secret project at the Air Force base, and they need his help getting more info on that first, but Gavin doesn't remember any secret project.

That memory is blocked. He disappears into the restroom. Sam is worried about Gavin's drinking, while Ty is concerned Gavin is afraid of facing his issues. They have bigger issues because Gavin disappeared again.

At the Fort, Gavin remembered he used to deliver milk to that base after looking at the map. While Sam thinks it'll look different in 10,000 BC, Gavin maintains the mountains look the same. The guys want to get info from Maya but promise Scott they'll rescue Petra and Levi the next time.

Sam is worried about Gavin, but Gavin maintains there's something about his past leading him to this base.  A rhino approaches, and they run. Then, there's an explosion, and they're by a minefield right by the base. A soldier holds a gun on them.

Back in 2021, Ty and Sam split up to search for Gavin. Ty runs into his wife, Sophie, who's still furious at him since she never wanted a divorce and hates that now he wants to talk. He tries to apologize, saying the cancer made him cruel.

But she only remembers feeling like she failed at being a wife and a writer, even though he reassures her she's a great writer. He tries to warn her about stopping a mistake that night.

Gavin and Sam are tied to a tree when a woman with a knife releases them. Sam is suspicious, but she and Gavin recognize each other. It's Maya Schmidt.

She takes the men to the rocks and says she's looking for her daughter. They agree to help her find Petra, but Gavin has some questions first.

Maya didn't know Eve was missing. When the men persist about the secret project, Maya jokes since they all landed in 10,000 BC, it was a time-traveling program. She admits he was one of the first test subjects and that it was her job to erase those memories.

She also admits she now understands those consequences since when she was ready to reveal to the program, she and Petra were kidnapped. While they escaped, they are now separated.

She offers to help bring back some memories if it will help.

Izzy helps Leyla with hunting food. Leyla is becoming more rebellious like Izzy and says screw it to fitting into a mold. Leyla gets upset the hunting party left without her, but she's determined to get her own boar.

One comes, and Leyla pushes Izzy out of the way, but then Leyla ends up in the tarpits. Izzy grabbed a branch to try and pull her out, but the branch broke.

Veronica tries to plead Lucas's case to Ruth about wanting to be on the leadership council, but that only shows Ruth what a good person Veronica was.

Izzy tries to light a fire so someone will find them. Leyla admits she never shot a boar and is afraid she'll never be a warrior. She says the only person who understood her was her twin brother.

In 2021, Sam found Gavin. Ty gets a drink, does some reverse psychology on Gavin, and tells him about his problems and how Sophie had issues with pills and alcohol, and unless something changes, she'll die from a drunk driving accident that night.

When violent pterodactyls attacked the Fort, it worsened the relationships between the two tribes. Ty convinced Sam to help him in 2021. Check out our review!

Was anyone clamoring for new characters in La Brea's final season when we only have six episodes to wrap up existing storylines for an already massive cast?

I wasn't, but in La Brea Season 3 Episode 2, we added two more characters, Ruth and Leyla. Ruth is the new leader since Paara (Tonantzin Carmelo) is no longer a series regular.

Leyla, her daughter, longed to be a fierce warrior and butted heads with Izzy, who also only wanted to be understood.

Tensions were high at the Fort since the Clearing survivors moved in, and things got worse when a murder occurred. Joseph, Paara's righthand man, was the only one who trusted them, and Ruth was the most suspicious, making Lucas fear for their home.

The two tribes were divided, and Sam only worsened things when he tried to escape, wanting to get to Riley. Sam was the ultimate Papa Bear and took no prisoners punching anyone in his way.

Sam's Determination - La Brea Season 3 Episode 2
(Mark Taylor/NBC)

The problem was that it landed him and Gavin in jail and only proved to Ruth that the "sky people" solve problems with their fists and not as a community.

Having served in the military and as a doctor, Sam was used to being in control, which made it ironic that he would lose his cool so fast, but his daughter was often the one who kept him calm since he lost his anxiety medication in La Brea Season 1.

Once Gavin heard the pterodactyls attacking outside their cell, he rightfully blamed Sam for getting them in this predicament. When the guards hauled Gavin off with Sam, Izzy had never looked more betrayed. Now, she was all alone again.

Gavin: Will you stop? You’ve caused enough problems today. Try not to make it worse.

Sam: I was trying to get to my daughter!

Gavin: Now I can’t get to mine. That turned out great, didn’t it?

Gavin and Sam were good men overall. However, they often reacted emotionally, and they had both lost their loved ones recently, so they acted rashly to protect those left.

Ruth - La Brea Season 3 Episode 2
(Mark Taylor/NBC)

With two new leaders in charge, it made sense that they disagreed. Initially, I disliked Ruth for how cold she was towards Gavin and Sam, but Sam's behavior earned that mistrust. He reacted with his fists.

As the new Clearing leader, Lucas had his work cut out to get those two released. You would think that when Ruth saw pterodactyls drop another man from the sky, she'd know the Clearing survivors were innocent of murder.

Not quite. She worried Gavin and Sam would only be a distraction, meaning Lucas and Scott had to form a plan and save their friends.

Lucas and Sam truly made a wonderful team. Scott's science genius struck again when he realized the pterodactyls were nesting near the Fort, and they needed to redirect them elsewhere.

Bizzare Markings - La Brea Season 3 Episode 2
(Mark Taylor/NBC)

I've never seen Scott more excited than when he handled that dinosaur egg. He was like a little kid on Christmas Day.

This was the closest you'd get to feeling like you were working on Jurassic Park and saving people.

Scott: I never imagined myself holding a dino egg. Why isn’t there a camera when you need one?

Gavin: Hey, we can make a TikTok later. Put it in the bag, and let’s go.

🔗 permalink: Hey, we can make a TikTok later. Put it in the bag, and let’s go.

The stunts and the CGI were so well-done as they shot off flares to scare off the dinosaurs.

You really felt like you were watching a sci-fi movie.

Stopping the Dinosaurs - La Brea Season 3 Episode 2
(Mark Taylor/NBC)

While I love Izzy, I'm unsure if we needed an arc for her. It was a rough time for Izzy since she lost her mom and brother again, and she was arguing with her dad.

She was growing up and needed to become her person.

Izzy: Yeah, I have issues. I just lost my mother and my brother, and today, your mother locked up my dad. Back home, I was as lost and misunderstood as anyone else, but at least I had people to talk to. Here, all we have time to do is survive.

🔗 permalink: Yeah, I have issues. I just lost my mother and my brother, and today, your mother locked up…

I wish we had longer to explore this since I think it will rushed in the five remaining episodes. It's not about Izzy learning archery. It's about her feeling useful and heard.

That's why she and Leyla clashed initially. They both appeared stronger but were vulnerable underneath.

Rivals - La Brea Season 3 Episode 2
(Mark Taylor/NBC)

In some ways, Izzy and Leyla reminded me of school girls fighting on a playground, and Ruth had to mediate. They both knew better than to brawl like that.

How many times have rivals become best friends?

It certainly seemed like Izzy and Leyla were forced to work together and take a hard look at their motivations for helping people.

We're finally seeing Izzy grow up, state her own needs to Gavin, and pull her weight. It will be fun to see.

Meanwhile, Ty's storyline arc reminded me of a combination of Timeless and Back to the Future. He knew he had a mission, but playing with space and time was dangerous.

While I stated that Lucas and Scott saved the Fort, Jon Seda was the actual episode MVP. He provided such layered performances in both timelines, and Sam's disbelief when he heard that the sinkholes were arriving was priceless.

Like any doctor, he thought Ty was crazy, but that became more difficult as Ty threw hard truths in his face that only a close friend would know. Who was this guy? How did he know these family secrets?

Sam: Who the hell are you?

Ty: I’m your friend, just like the many friends we need to try and get back. I can’t do that on my own.

🔗 permalink: I’m your friend, just like the many friends we need to try and get back. I can’t do that on…

What makes this storyline so fun is watching Jon Seda and Chiké Okonkwo build up their friendship a second time. They were close friends in 10,000 BC, but now the actors have to find commonality in a new way and solve this mission.

Dynamic Duo - La Brea Season 3 Episode 2
(Mark Taylor/NBC)

What about that cliffhanger? We have just met Gavin at rock bottom. Can Ty and Sam save him from his demons, and will he even believe them?

While I'm excited to see these three work together, as Eoin Macken mentioned it in his interview with TV Fanatic, I also have concerns. What is their plan? If they stop the sinkhole, Gavin and Eve may never meet, and Izzy and Josh won't exist.

La Brea's final season is exciting, but so many questions remain.

Over to you, La Brea Fanatics. What's been your favorite storyline so far? Are you happy Izzy has her own arc? What's our bet for when Eve will pop up?

Discuss below.
