Final Girls aren't just for horror movies; they're on TV shows too! Here, we discuss and review 29 TV characters who survived their scary storylines.

The post 29 TV Final Girls Who Conquered Their Horror Story appeared first on TV Fanatic.

When you think of horror movies, this popular trope most likely comes to mind: a masked killer hiding in the darkness which is picking off unsuspecting victims one by one. Then, our main hero (usually a young woman) fights the killer and walks away victorious.

That protagonist is our "Final Girl."

She is one of the surviving characters in the movie to see another day. (Or, it's fighting an evil spirit, a zombie army, supernatural creature. You get the idea.)

Viewers are typically pulled through their POV to root them on.

(Copyright 2019, FX Networks. All rights reserved.)

While this archetype is known more for horror movies, Final Girls are a staple on TV too!

Though, there are some noticeable differences. Like, their battles aren't confined to a single night of terror. Sometimes it'll spread across multiple TV plotlines or an overarching season.

This means we get more time to meet our Final Girl, learn about her backstory, and see her develop before fighting the villain.

Each Final Girl is different, but what connects them is their resourcefulness, their inner push for good, and their bravery in the face of evil. And, in rare cases, they have a weird connection to the killer or supernatural ability.

Whose Blood Is It? - Scream
(MTV)

Below, we've picked out TV's best Final Girls who dominated the small screen and conquered the evil that came their way.

Author's Note: Spoiler warning! Details discuss plots from the series and what the characters faced. Also, some shows are still airing, so while the character's final fate might still be up in the air, the character fits the archetype and survived significant parts of their journey.

Check out the list below!

Emma Returns - Scream
(MTV)

Emma Duval of Scream (MTV)

Emma is the closest you'll get between a horror movie series and a TV Final Girl.

She faced three serial killers who targeted her for varying reasons. The killers tormented her, picked off her friends one by one, and even tried to finish her off in the climactic "killer reveal" scene. Even when her friends were targeted, all roads led back to Emma.

Much of Scream's first two seasons (and Halloween mini-arc) focused on Emma's story. And similar to the film series, her connection to the killers became a main plot point.

Emma was inquisitive, risked her life to save her friends, and showcased her resourcefulness to defeat the killers.

While Audrey and Brooke also survived the ordeals, they aren't the Final Girls due to how much Scream was heavily narrated around Emma. Audrey fits more of the "horror movie fan" and "rebel" archetype while Brooke is the "rich/popular girl." Based on horror movie rules, they were more likely to be fodder.

Brooke Thompson - American Horror Story Season 9 Episode 1
(FX Networks)

Brooke Thompson of American Horror Story: 1984 (FX)

Brooke is the epitome of the Final Girl in American Horror Story.

She fits some of the clearcut tropes that were present during '80s slashers: tormented backstory, naive virgin, chase scenes, and she's the main target of the serial killer. (Well, at least two of them.) But, what earned her the title was her redemption storyline to seek justice against the killers who wronged her.

When push came to shove, she mustered the bravery to fight the killers directly. This wasn't even a single instance; we're talking years of build-up before Brooke got her finale moment.

Even the characters directly in the show called her the Final Girl!

Brooke fits the role. (Who are we to disagree with Donna?)

Nina Looks Shocked
(The CW)

Elena Gilbert of The Vampire Diaries (The CW)

Elena's journey as a Final Girl stretched across two phases in his life. The first was during her time as a human, and the second was when she became a vampire.

In both instances, Elena's inquisitive personality brought her deeper into the supernatural world. And when you consider that she always jumped into action to protect her friends, Elena spent a lot of time putting herself in danger.

Katherine. The Originals. Werewolves. Vampires. These were just some of the enemies she had to face who wanted her dead.

The Vampire Diaries, at its core, dealt with rooting on Elena's survival as she encountered evil.

That is, also, to the love triangle plot and the storylines of her friends. (Regardless that Nina Dobrev left the show after The Vampire Diaries Season 6.)

Buffy's Stake - Buffy the Vampire Slayer
(The WB)

Buffy Summers of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (The WB & UPN)

Buffy breaks the mold for what you'd expect a Final Girl to be. Instead of cowering away from the monsters in the dark, she sought them out and fought them head-on.

The trope of the horror icon is flipped on its head.

Buffy Summers has faced it all, from vampire lords to demonic gods. Let's not even forget the iconic meeting with Dracula! If you can think of a horror story, she has seen it all.

Even though Buffy died twice during the series, fates brought her back into the fold to fight another day. When it all came down to it, she stood victorious as her greatest enemy's plan (The First Evil), and the town of Sunnydale crumbled to the bottom of the Hellmouth.

Buffy changed the game for Final Girls, and she stands as one of the leading examples of a horror (and empowerment) icon from TV.

Grace Screaming - Scream Queens Season 1 Episode 10
(FOX)

Grace Gardner of Scream Queens (FOX)

Scream Queens is an interesting show on this list because characters who would've typically been killed off in horror movies ended up surviving and/or becoming the main focus on the show.

Scream Queens kept the final survivor rate pretty high. Though, even amid the changing body count, there still emerged characters who fit a few key archetypes. Like, the mean girl, the nerd, and of course, the Final Girl.

Upbeat sorority pledge Grace was the main Final Girl of Scream Queens Season 1.

As with many examples on this list, the Kappa Kappa Tau plot connected to Grace's main narrative. Sure, the Red Devil killers were going to enact their murder spree regardless, but in true horror fashion, the main character coincidently had a backstory that tied to their revenge plot.

Grace used her resourcefulness and investigative skills to expose the killers' backstories. Plus, her fate at ending up at a mental asylum fits right at home with many of her '80s Final Girl counterparts.

Bloody Doctor - Scream Queens
(FOX)

Zayday Williams of Scream Queens (FOX)

Zayday's journey as a Final Girl spread across two seasons, from her early days at the Kappa house to working at the hospital.

Beyond the Chanels, Zayday is one of the constant characters who helped to push the plot forward and conquer the killers. Even when she got captured (both times!), Zayday found a way to break free and ensure her survival. But it's her tenure during Scream Queens Season 2 where she assumed full Final Girl status.

Without Zayday's constant vigilance and investigative skills, the killers' plot wouldn't have been revealed. She cared more about helping people and stopping the killers once and for all, which is a noble trait many Final Girls hold to their hearts.

As compared to the Chanels, Zayday never felt like fodder. Chanel #1, #3, and #5 always seemed to be at the killers' mercy and made decisions to put their survival first, regardless if it killed someone in the process.

Prom Night Chaos - Tall - Riverdale Season 3 Episode 20
(Dean Buscher/The CW)

Betty Cooper of Riverdale (The CW)

Come on, Betty Cooper is THE Final Girl of Riverdale!

Betty has faced serial killers, solved murder-mysteries, investigated crimes, and dived deep into the darkness of the town. Plus, she also explored her own supernatural/mental connection to the darkness that threatened to ruin her life.

When Betty became the target of both The Black Hood and The Farm, she cemented her status as a horror icon.

The narrative was focused through her eyes as she discovered body-after-body, and the killer tormenting her with her grief. As the evil grows around her, Betty is resourceful and finds a way to survive.

Riverdale High dances will never be the same again.

Sarah Bennett in Slasher: The Executioner
(Netflix)

Sarah Bennett of Slasher: The Executioner (Netflix, Chiller, and Super Channel)

Slasher Season 1 had a look and feel that tied closely to a slasher movie. A large number of suspects, the bloody body count, and a faceless killer with a creepy mask made up the mystery. At the core of this killing spree was Sarah Bennett.

Sarah is an artistic and conflicted character who has a dark backstory involving the killer.

Once she moved back to town, the killings started happening again, and she became the main focus. Sure, The Executioner targeted sinners first, but the history of the crimes stemmed from Sarah's backstory. It was only a matter of time before the killer sought to kill her to finish off the plan.

Sarah used her wits to survive at every encounter, she explored deeper into the mystery, and she eventually took down the killer. Plus, she walked away with a greater understanding of herself and the secrets of the past.

Saadia Jalalzai in Slasher: Solstice
(Netflix)

Saadia Jalalzai of Slasher: Solstice (Netflix)

Saadia's Final Girl status didn't emerge from the get-go like her Slasher Season 1 counterpart. Her journey took a few episodes and victims before the narrative switched to her plight for survival.

The Druid picked off people in the apartment building to mark the horrors of the previous year. But, Saadia is an introverted and kind character who kept to herself; the story of sneaking out to the rave is an opportunity pushed by her friends.

So, how was she connected to it all? Barely, that is. Saadia could've avoided it all had she stayed to herself; however, her horror role wouldn't let that happen.

Saadia searched for clues about the killer, encountered bodies, and tried to save everyone from death. And once both her friend and love interest were revealed as the killers, she mustered the strength to fight and win.

Spencer Hastings, Hanna Marin, Aria Montgomery, and Emily Fields of Pretty Little Liars (ABC Family / Freeform)

The four main leads of Pretty Little Liars each have countless stories of blackmail, torment, and instances where they've explored creepy locations. And let's not forget the many times they've fought against "A" or one of their accomplices!

Much of the chaos stemmed from the lies that The Liars told, and the extents at which they went to keep their secrets hidden.

It's hard to choose between any of them as the Final Girl of PLL because they're all the Final Girls.

The journey focused on each of them, and when faced with A's evil plans, they survived. This also includes whenever the mysteries lead to a pivotal moment where someone tried to kill them.

Spencer, Hanna, Aria, and Emily did what they could to defeat A, even when their secrets got released in the process.

Bitchin' - Stranger Things
(Netflix)

Eleven of Stranger Things (Netflix)

Eleven is an interesting case on this list. She isn't the type of Final Girl who was thrown into the chaos by happenstance or developed the power to defeat the enemy over time. Eleven had the ability within her all along.

She sought out the evil corporation and the enemies of The Upside Down instead of cowering away from them.

Think of her position like Buffy Summers: she dived deeper into the mysteries, became stronger as she came to terms with her role/powers, and defeated the monsters with her inner ability. Plus, she knew when to run away and play it smart whenever the situation threatened to harm her loved ones.

Nancy Wheeler could also be deemed a Final Girl on Stranger Things, but her intentions tend to be self-serving at times. She's cared more about her romantic relationships, writing news stories, or overcoming her guilt about Barb's death.

Abby Mills in Harper's Island
(CBS/CHRIS HELCERMANAS-BENGE)

Abby Mills of Harper's Island (CBS)

Abby Mills survived not just one serial killer encounter, but two instances in her life. Both of them plaguing her birthplace on Harper's Island, a quiet, idyllic fishing island off Seattle.

After surviving a near encounter during her teens that killed her mother, Abby returned to the island years later for her best friend's wedding. And, in typical horror fashion, a killer starts picking off the wedding guests one-by-one.

Abby is introverted, kind, and brave, but she's also sullen due to her past trauma.

Abby takes matters into her own hands by rallying the guests for survival, albeit with a few questionable solo adventures. She jumps into each situation to fight the killer, especially after deducing her connection to the murder spree that took place years prior.

Searching Sookie
(HBO)

Sookie Stackhouse of True Blood (HBO)

Sookie is the curious and inquisitive voice that pushed many of True Blood's plots. Right from True Blood Season 1 Episode 1, the lure of the supernatural world pulled her in, much to the dismay of her friends around her.

Vampires, werewolves, witches, fairies, cult members, and of course, a serial killer were par for the course of Sookie's history.

If something terrible happened in Bon Temps, there's no doubt Sookie would be close behind to inspect. Or, the story would find its connection to Sookie.

On a high body count show like True Blood, there was always one constant: Sookie would survive. Even when her friends, enemies, and strangers were being killed, Sookie would be the last one standing.

Plus, it also helped that Sookie would go out of her way to save people when she could.

McKenna Brady & Alex Portnoy
(Hulu)

Alex Portnoy & McKenna Brady of Light as a Feather (Hulu)

A simple game of "Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board" shouldn't have amounted to the terror it did. But, that's what happens when the supernatural is brought in to deliver a deadly curse.

Both McKenna and Alex fell victim to Violet's manipulation by playing the game and becoming targets in the curse's hit list.

They lost friends along the way and eventually survived their first encounter with the curse. Unfortunately, they jumped back in to play the game yet again when the curse affected new victims. McKenna's life was threatened, Alex was hunted by a killer, and new schemes were afoot that nearly took their lives.

While McKenna's traumatic past was explored more during the series, both faced harrowing evils before they eventually conquered their horror story.

Have they truly survived the curse? Time will tell, but for right now, they're free to live another day.

Concern - Teen Wolf Season 6 Episode 16
(Scott Everett White/MTV)

Lydia Martin of Teen Wolf (MTV)

Lydia had one of the biggest character developments throughout Teen Wolf's run. She started as the typical shallow popular girl before growing into a self-sufficient hero that can stand on her own to help the heroes.

It wasn't until Lydia encountered her biggest enemy that her true strength and abilities emerged.

Starting with Teen Wolf Season 2, her path toward embracing her banshee side led her into caring more about others, owning her intelligence, and stepping in to help when the group needed. She wasn't the best fighter compared to the werewolves and hunters, but her abilities made a huge difference and aided in plenty of plots.

Plus, Lydia experienced many of the standard horror moments you'd expect where a horror victim would die. However, she pushed through to make it to the end.

Sabrina Red Riding Witch - Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
(Diyah Pera/Netflix)

Sabrina Spellman of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (Netflix)

Just like Elena, Sabrina's path as a Final Girl covered two phases of her life: (1) before she signed the Book of the Devil, and (2) after she signed the book. From evil witches to supernatural demons, everyone had it out to kill or corrupt Sabrina.

Sabrina made the ultimate sacrifice to save the town, but even after assuming her full witchy powers, the horror story continued around her.

Sabrina Spellman is a great Final Girl because she adapts to every changing situation around her. Even though some of her decisions are questionable, they come from a genuine place with the intent to help everyone. She wants to keep doing good and save her friends, regardless of her demonic responsibilities.

Though, the few times where she has accepted her dark side, it hindered her heroic legacy. Like, faking killing Agatha or becoming Queen of Hell.

It's a complex situation that isn't so cut and dry. (She is the daughter of the Devil, after all!)

Glancing Upward - Veronica Mars
(Michael Desmond/Hulu)

Veronica Mars of Veronica Mars (UPN, The CW, & Hulu)

Veronica Mars is one of the few characters on this list who doesn't appear on a horror TV series. The show is more crime-noir episodic and involves her solving crimes in her affluent town. Though, the situation has turned deadly on many occasions.

Veronica faced criminals, blackmailers, and, most importantly, a few killers during her tenure.

Thanks to her resourcefulness and wit, she took down Lily Kane's murderer, the bus crash bomber, and the Hearst College rapist, to name a few. She made bold moves to hunt down the criminals, and she carried the narrative throughout each case.

But even in the thick of things, Veronica knew to play it smart, albeit with a solo and cavalier attitude.

When it was time to run, she ran like hell to put space between her and the killer. And, we rooted her on for survival whenever she found herself trapped in a dangerous situation with the Big Bad nearby.

Making a Sacrifice - Shadowhunters
(Freeform/Ben Mark Holzberg)

Clary Fairchild of Shadowhunters (Freeform)

Clary falls into the same group as Buffy and Eleven. Her Final Girl status is filled with many supernatural enemies and heroic victories in battle.

Her original pursuit of being an art student got turned upside down when she discovered that she was a Shadowhunter. After that moment, she got thrown into battle and had to face a growing army of enemies. Like, her evil father, an evil sibling, and demons from hell.

Clary used her fighting skills and a sense of justice to save her life.

The plot didn't always work out in her favor; the villains got the upper hand a few times in their battles. And she did lose her memory at the cost of making a powerful move. However, when presented with a big decision to stop an evil enemy, she chose what would help the greatest number of people.

Clare in The Stranger
(Quibi)

Clare of The Stranger (Quibi)

Clare's run as a Final Girl took her through a night of hell. While the other entries on this list covered a few days, each episode of Clare's journey spanned an hour of panic and fright.

The horror started with a rideshare encounter, but the cause of the terror was a stalker turning things deadly.

Part of Clare's experience was her inconsistent narrative. Many clues given were led to believe that we shouldn't trust Clare and that Carl E. might be a figment of her imagination. But, even with that season-long mystery hanging over our heads, the threat of a potential killer was still high.

Clare conquered and defeated (a very real) Carl E. to live for another day.

Donna Hayward in Twin Peaks
(ABC)

Donna Hayward of Twin Peaks (ABC)

Donna doesn't have the most conventional story in her horror experience. Which makes sense when you think about how unconventional Twin Peaks is as a TV series.

Her best friend Laura Palmer gets murdered, her new friend gets murdered, and more suspects are increasing around town. Agent Cooper and the sheriff's station are on the case, but Donna can't help only standing by as the killer runs free.

Part of Twin Peaks' story follows Donna as she, Maddy, and James search for the truth about Laura's murder.

Donna is a resourceful, intelligent, and caring person. Her curiosity leads her to explore many of the town's dark secrets and hidden corruption.

What cements her place on this list is her close encounter at almost being a Twin Peaks victim.

She narrowly avoided being murdered by Leland Palmer, and she dodged many of the nefarious actions of the town's corrupt citizens. Without Donna's help, the mystery wouldn't have been solved.

Clueless - Tall - iZombie Season 5 Episode 9
(Jack Rowand/The CW)

Liv Moore of iZombie (The CW)

Liv may be undead, but we were living for her story.

Being a zombie didn't deter Liv from living her life or trying to find a cure. She utilized her new special ability wherever she could, from solving cases to saving lives to finding a cure for the zombie curse. Liv threw herself into the mystery to get the job done.

The cases sometimes put her at risk against dangerous criminals, but she embraced each new mystery to do some good where it counted.

The zombie apocalypse might've ravaged Seattle and cost thousands of lives. However, Liv eventually got her happy ending and overcame anyone who worked against her.

Diana Bishop of A Discovery of Witches (Sky One, AMC, & BBC America)

Diana's complete horror story is far from over, especially since there is a second and third season coming for the series. Though, just from A Discovery of Witches Season 1 alone, Diana has survived A LOT!

The bewitched manuscript that bestowed untold power on Diana opened the floodgates of evil upon her life. She became the target of everyone seeking power and a malevolent fight between witches/vampires sparked in its place.

Part of it is also due to the forbidden romance between her and the handsome vampire Matthew Clairmont. (Seriously, Matthew Goode is so sophisticated and charming! It is well worth the price to pay.)

Diana is brave, a scholar in her field, and capable of fighting her own battles. Regardless of what evil vampires and witches have thrown her way, she has succeeded to live another day. If she can make it through that, the odds are in her favor.

Vic McQueen - NOS4A2
(AMC)

Vic McQueen of NOS4A2 (AMC)

Victoria "Vic" McQueen is a reluctant Final Girl on this list. Similar to Diana, her story is far from over, but based on NOS4A2 Season 1, she proved to be a capable hero against the immortal villain, Charlie Manx.

Her aspirations to be an artist (there might be a theme here…) were put on hold as life got in the way. The biggest concern with that was a supernatural kidnapper holding children hostage and feeding off their souls.

Plus, with her supernatural ability, she's developed a strange connection to Charlie and can track him down.

Vic would've rather gone to school to be an artist, but she channeled her strength to fight Charlie in the hopes of saving the missing children. She is brash, a loner, and cares for others all at the same time.

Vic conquered her first horror story with Charlie, but with more episodes on the way, their sequel could be more intense than the last.

Velma & Daphne
(Cartoon Network)

Daphne & Velma of Scooby-Doo (Cartoon Network and many iterations)

We couldn't forget Daphne and Velma from this Final Girls list! Before horror found a scary place on TV, the Mystery Machine was driving around and solving crimes before bedtime.

Daphne and Velma have seen it all, from ghosts to vampires to zombies and more. Sure, many schemes were petty criminals trying to steal money or gain power using urban legends. But, there were instances where the legends turned out to be true.

The two leading ladies of Mystery Incorporated each have their strengths within the team. Velma has a knack for capturing the baddie while Daphne plays bait or puts her investigative skills to good use. Along with Fred, Shaggy, and Scooby, they've put an end to many scary cases.

Both Daphne and Velma faced the supernatural and won.

Zayday Williams - Scream Queens
(FOX)

May is Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders Heritage Month.

While AAPI actors and characters are still underrepresented, the TV landscape is making strides when it comes to all different types of diversity onscreen, including representing AAPI characters and showcasing them well.

Many of these characters have broken grounds, subverted common racial tropes, and are the wonderfully complex, lovable, and/or positive portrayals that we need.

We wanted to commemorate this month by compiling a list of some of our favorites.

Check it out, and feel free to add your own below.

Miggy – Single Parents

Miggy - Single Parents
(ABC)

Miggy is the youngest parent on the tragically canceled Single Parents, and he had a knack for stealing a scene. But it was such a refreshing change of pace to have the Asian-American male as the lovably dimwitted, fashionable, tatted up, and coolest character out of the bunch.

He's hot, kindhearted, and often requires the guidance of others, but he's so in tune with his emotions, and in so many ways, he subverts some of the more traditional depictions of Korean men on TV. Miggy is a total hipster dudebro, and on him, the trope looks hella good.

Devon – The Resident

Devon's Agenda - The Resident Season 2 Episode 17
(Guy D’Alema/FOX)

The beauty of Devon Pravesh, outside of his actual attractiveness — the man is gorgeous, is that he's a multifaceted character as a doctor, friend, and romantic partner.

His identity as a first-generation Indian-America is part of his characterization without him getting reduced to that, and it realistically crops up throughout his daily life as one of Chastain's finest.

He's allowed to be messy, and flawed; he's a compassionate, smart, and funny character, and even though his romantic life is a hot mess when it's shown, there's still value and importance in actually depicting him as romantically viable.

He's a very real, grounded character with dimension.

Katherine – A Million Little Things

Sweet Katie - A Million Little Things Season 2 Episode 17
(ABC/Bettina Strauss)

Katherine Saville is a perfect example of a series starting off depicting a standard racial trope and then slowly turning it on its head. Initially, she came across as a stoic, unfeeling Ice Queen. However, as the series progressed, Katherine was revealed as a layered, complex, wonderful character.

Grace Park gives one of the most compelling and nuanced performances of the series. Katherine's emotional journey as she copes with the loss of a friend, isolation from most of her peers, her husband's infidelity and love child, and motherhood while working a full-time demanding job is a wonderfully complex depiction of womanhood.

And the series manages to infuse all of that with hints of how her culture influences her. From the casual use of Korean when speaking to her mom, to unpacking why she compartmentalizes feelings or strives for perfection, or how her identity affected her experiences at work.

Katherine is such a relatable and aspirational character.

The Huangs – Fresh Off the Boat

Huang Family - Fresh Off the Boat
(ABC/ Andrew Eccles)

Fresh off the Boat is a groundbreaking series for the mere fact that it exclusively focused on a Chinese-American family and primarily starred Asian-Americans. It joined the ranks of other ABC sitcoms showcasing the everyday life of a family with a specific identity and culture.

Via FOB, viewers could not only relate to another American family, but better understand aspects of a culture they otherwise didn't belong to or relate, and in the end, conclude that while there are many differences, we all aren't that dissimilar after all.

Travis – Station 19

Travis getting ready - Station 19 Season 3 Episode 8
(Richard Cartwright/ABC)

Sadly, there are still so few AAPI queer characters on TV, so it's something special when we can acknowledge the handful of them that exist and move us.

Travis is heroic, as a firefighter, it comes with the job, but it's a natural instinct for him that predated his days of fighting fires and treating others. He's an EMT with a compassion that will move you to tears towards those he saves.

He's a widow who lost the love of his life and is still making space in his life for the potential of loving someone again. After his origin story revealed his struggle to deal with his parents accepting his sexuality, it made you love him more and appreciate the importance of stories like his being told.

Joan Watson – Elementary

Taking the Lead - Elementary Season 6 Episode 11
(CBS/Best Possible Screen Grab)

Lucy Liu is a legend, and most of her characters are equally as iconic. Joan Watson is no exception. Not only does she play a gender-bent version of Sherlock's partner, Watson, but she's an Asian-American, and both aspects of her identity help make this rendition of Watson fresher and a standout.

Joan's shift from a medical doctor to an exceptional investigator is such an aspiring journey, and she carved out a place and name for herself all the way earning the respect and utter devotion of a classic misanthrope.

Joan Watson is all the goals.

White Rose – Mr. Robot

Whiterose - Mr. Robot
(usa network)

Whiterose is one of the most radical, provocative characters on this list. It's suitable that she belongs to a series that is very much the same and some.

On a series that reshaped what it means to explore identity, Whiterose is a unique character who captured an experience you seldom see for any community, let alone the AAPI one.

While a villainess, she was so complex and rich. And her motivations and desires made for captivating storytelling, especially when the series explored how dueling identities as a trans woman and an Asian person intersected and diverged.

Cristina Yang – Grey's Anatomy

Sandra Oh as Cristina Yang Pic
(ABC)

Can you even have a list celebrating some of the most influential and important AAPI characters and not include Cristina Yang? It would be akin to blasphemy.

In some ways, she's arguably more popular than Meredith Grey herself, appealing to millions of fans as the ambitious, dedicated, headstrong, snarky, and dark surgeon.

Her unwavering, and unapologetic ambition and power, are unparalleled.

Ravi Chakrabarti – iZombie

Mad Brain Scientist - iZombie Season 4 Episode 1
(Bettina Strauss/THE CW)

Dr. Tall, Dark, British, and at times partially zombie, is the most beloved character on iZombie. He's the most tried and true, loyal character.

Ravi is an innovator and pioneer, but also the comedic relief and has so much heart. He had a way of occupying so many spaces without ever getting pigeonholed into one designated position. And one of the most inspirational characters on the series.

Alex Parrish – Quantico

Priyanka Chopra made history as the first South Asian to lead an American series. While there were questionable choices, particularly in making the lead, a brown woman, a suspect in a terrorist plot — the first season's initial premise, the history-making series was a hit.

Alex Parrish is fierce, determined, and relentless. Her devotion to a country that was accusing her of being a terrorist was both surreal and poignant. And it was amazing to watch the savvy, beautiful FBI/CIA agent fight crime, conspiracy, and terrorism, like an action heroine.

Howie/Chimney – 9-1-1

Chatting Over Beers - 9-1-1 Season 3 Episode 14
(Jack Zeman/FOX)

Howie/Chimney may just be the heart of the team, in addition to being a fan-favorite. We're accustomed to seeing AAPI characters as doctors, so it's refreshing to see a character who is helping others and saving lives but as a first responder instead.

And Chimney's journey toward becoming one of the house's most beloved firefighters was an illuminating one when the series gave us a centric episode of his backstory rife with highs, lows, hardships, discrimination, love, friendship, and perseverance.

We see him battle life and death situations and experiences, he's the most supportive friend, and the epitome of boyfriend goals. And one of the most well-rounded and developed characters in the 9-1-1 franchise.

Kira Yukimura – Teen Wolf

Kira's departure was one of the most disappointing things to happen in the series. It left a bad taste in some fans' mouths that they shuffled her off, with no closure, after her familial history and its connection to the latest mythological villain was complete.

However, the usage of Japanese mythology led to one of the series' best storylines, and Kira's discovery that she was a kitsune made her a lovely addition to Scott's pack. Her romantic relationship with Scott almost rivaled that of his first love and was beautifully depicted as well.

And Kira was a smart, sweet, awkward badass character who learned how to wield her power and embrace her heritage.

Mateo, Sandra, & Cheyenne – Superstore

Mateo and Sandra - Superstore Season 5 Episode 3
(Trae Patton/NBC)
Cheyenne - Superstore Season 5 Episode 13
(Evans Vestal Ward/NBC)

Superstore is one of the most authentically diverse series on the air. Each of their characters feels, looks, and acts like real people that you'd encounter every day.

Mateo shines as a gay former undocumented Filipino immigrant. There are only a couple of Filipino characters on American TV, so his portrayal is instrumental in creating a space for others to seen and represented beyond a punchline.

Sandra is a scene-stealer as the awkward, soft-spoken, plus-sized employee whose sweet and almost naive demeanor is endearing, and Cheyenne as the fun-loving ditz will make you smile.

Vijay Kapoor – New Amsterdam

Kapoor's Service - tall - New Amsterdam Season 2 Episode 7
(Zach Dilgard/NBC)

Who doesn't love Kapoor? He's the purest character in the series. As the eldest doctor of the core group, he's often depicted as someone who treats patients at his own pace and in his own way. But he brings wisdom and efficiency to New Amsterdam that only he could pull off.

He's a proud man of faith, and his Hinduism is incorporated into the series in unexpectedly delightful ways. Kapoor isn't reduced to his heritage and culture, but it's organically weaved into the series in such a realistic manner that it's touching.

Lucy Chen – The Rookie

Lucy Looks at Ease - The Rookie Season 2 Episode 13
(ABC/Christopher Willard)

You will not find a more kickass character on The Rookie than Lucy Chen. She's a pint-sized force of nature and one of the best of the rookies. She's confident, smart and savvy, and strong-willed.

She's also vulnerable, emotionally open, and she's a survivor. She's given room to have an emotional range, and it's something that's notable and appreciated.

Josh Chan – Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

He Got the Call - Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Season 2 Episode 13
(The CW)

Another one of the only few Filipino characters on American TV, Josh got to operate the coveted titled of romantic male lead for the main character.

It's something that you rarely see. One of the most notable installments of the series was where Josh spent the holiday with his family, and the series normalized the depiction of a Filipino family and their culture being shown on TV.

Josh as a character who is strong in his Catholic faith and the values his parents instilled in him. He's personable, charming, and handsome. He has a natural charisma that draws people in, but it doesn't get more amusing than the realistic portrayal of how families like his coddle, cater and spoil him.

Joanna Chang – Burden of Truth

Joanna Defends Her Need To Defend - Burden of Truth Season 3 Episode 2
(© 2020 Cause One Productions Inc. and Cause One Manitoba Inc.)

Joanna is a strong-willed and hyperfocused lawyer who pours her heart and soul into her work. She could easily come across cold and distant, as she has the vibe of most who are emotionally repressed, but Kreuk brings parity to her character.

It results in Joanna being an underrated and complex character leading a series that falls criminally below the radar.

Mary Hamilton – Batwoman

Doctor Mary - Batwoman Season 1 Episode 15
(Shane Harvey/The CW)

An engaging member of Team Batwoman, you can argue that she's every bit as vital and heroic as Batwoman herself, and she barely gets the credit for it.

She's brilliant, quick on her feet, and motivated. Mary running an underground medical center to treat those who would otherwise slip through the cracks tells you everything you need to know about her and why she's one of the greatest characters.

May & Daisy – Marvel Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D has not one but two prominent AAPI characters, both badass women in their own right who have had incredible arcs throughout the season.

May comes across on the rigid, tacit side, but she has such a maternal presence on the series that softens her up from the stereotypical non-feeling fighter, and Daisy's arc is a convoluted, fascinating arc that has driven the series.

Devi – Never Have I Ever

Devi is the perfect teen-heroine who happens to be of South Asian descent, and the importance of that is not on viewers. She's smart, nerdy, and ambitious, but she's also bold and larger than life.

The balance of something as traditional as the nerdy role with such a confident, young woman who knows what she wants and goes after it makes her an engrossing and unique character.

Edrisa – Prodigal Son

Malcolm's Fangirl - Tall - Prodigal Son Season 1 Episode 20
(David Giesbrecht/FOX)

Keiko Agena is an icon. Period.

She steals the heck out of her scenes as the lovable, winsome medical examiner, Edrisa Tanaka. She's bubbly, positive, nerdy, and wonderfully weird.

She's such a quirky character, but she's one with depth, and it's in her serious moments that reveal a woman who is passionate about her work, deeply philosophical, and humane.

She has a wisdom and slight jadedness beneath her cheerful exterior, and it makes her a more complex character than what initially meets the eye.

Henry Higgins – Selfie

John Cho is another legend, and it came as no surprise that he was the first person to break a glass ceiling for Asian-American representation on TV.

The tragically cut short Selfie was the first American series with an Asian male as the romantic lead. Henry's chemistry with Eliza was off the charts, and on the surface, he seemed as if he was an uptight, stuffy character, but it turned out he was much cooler than he let on.

Henry was a bit of a nerd, but he also knew how to have a good time, and there was a nuanced approach to his character that was surprising for a half-hour comedy.

Alice – Good Trouble

Out and Proud - Tall - Good Trouble Season 2 Episode 3
(Freeform/Eric McCandless)

Quirky, delightfully awkward, funny, and the quintessential mom friend, Alice is the one person at the Coterie that everyone loves. She makes it hard not to adore her.

She's also one of the few queer AAPI characters on TV, and she has one of the best ongoing arcs exploring her sexuality with relationships dealing with typical ups and downs of any couple and queer issues too.

Alice coming out to her traditional, conservative parents was quality viewing. And her earnest quest to pursue a stand-up comedy career is a delightfully original premise.

Monty – The 100

Monty and a new haircut in space - The 100 Season 5 Episode 3
(Diyah Pera/The CW)

Monty is an intelligent character who puts his intellect to good use by helping those he cares about. His display of humanity and nonviolence within a series where it's prevalent makes him stand out from many of the others.

As an intuitive, loyal, and likable character with a protective streak, he's some of the most positive representation on the series.

Audrey Lim & Alex Park – The Good Doctor

Waiting for News - The Good Doctor Season 3 Episode 20
(ABC/David Bukach)
Everything Changes - The Good Doctor Season 3 Episode 16
(ABC/Liane Hentscher)

Audrey Lim is a total BAMF. She's not only one of the best doctors at the hospital, but she is also the person who runs it. Fierce, no-nonsense, and bold, Audrey is a real leader. The series even allowed her to balance out her personal and professional life, and she has agency and is allowed to be powerful and feminine in equal measure.

Park is a character with many layers to him as well. He's not the standard doctor trope; as someone who made a career shift from law enforcement to medicine, he often has a unique outlook that sets him apart from others. He's allowed to be pigheaded, unlikable, and flawed while still interesting.

Ellie Chu – The Half of It

Studious Ellie - tall
(Netflix / KC Bailey)

This Netflix movie caught many people's attention by showcasing a different type of love story.

The quiet complexity of Ellie's character is some of the most extraordinary work. As an immigrant with a father who highly-skilled father who barely spoke English, she captured the trials and triumphs of immigrant kid taking on responsibilities at a young age.

She's an acerbic, poetic, smart, and socially challenged lesbian teen whose growth made for one of the best coming of age stories in decades.

Glenn Rhee – The Walking Dead

Glenn Rhee Photograph
(AMC)

Glenn Rhee will forever go down as one of The Walking Dead's most beloved characters. He was kind, loyal, and brave. He was one of the most honorable and moral characters in the series, and he never lost that during his entire tenure of the series, even if the face of unspeakable tragedies and trials.

Glenn is the character that others looked up to and aspired to be. He left such a lasting impression on anyone he encountered, and the importance of his goodness isn't lost.

Jason & Tahani – The Good Place

Jason and Tahani - The Good Place Season 2 Episode 8
(Colleen Hayes/NBC)

Jason and Tahani are two totally different types of characters, but that versatility is part of why their representation is so necessary in the first place.

Jason is another example of the dudebro that you don't typically see portrayed onscreen. He's almost childlike in his depiction, and a bit of an eccentric as well. But that's all part of what makes his character absorbing.

Tahani is one of the most overtly good characters on the series, and that is as meaningful as it is positive in regard to representation. She's equal parts beauty and brains, but she balances it out with being a genuinely decent, alluring person as well.

George – Nancy Drew

George - Nancy Drew Season 1 Episode 14
(Kailey Schwerman/The CW)

A devoted sister who will stop at nothing to protect those she cares about, outspoken, secretive, and a bit of a tomboy, George is a prototype you don't exactly see often for most AAPI characters on TV, and that's what made her a perfect candidate for this list.

She's an imperfect character whose life is a bit on the messy side, but she puts up a good front. And she has a pivotal role in Nancy's Drew crew.

Gordon Katsumoto – Magnum P.I.

Katsumoto is a Gem - Magnum P.I. Season 1 Episode 18
(CBS/Best Possible Screen Grab)

Gordon is a gem of a character, and he's a fan-favorite of the series. He has worked like hell to get to his position and is often depicted as a confident, hardworking individual who knows how to get what he wants.

He's a by the books cop, and it causes him to clash with Magnum often, but it's also why he's so pivotal to the series. He balances him out, and they make an effective team as a result.

Sun Bak & Kala Dandekar – Sense8

Sense8 had some of the richest, most diverse, and compelling characters on TV. The global series had characters from all walks of life linked together as one, with a beautiful message about unity and oneness.

Sun is a character who could've come across one-note, once again as the stoic woman who doesn't allow herself to feel, but she's protective, loyal, and has a strong sense of honor and duty.

Meanwhile, Kala is such an inspiring character as she perfectly encapsulates what it means to be a person of science and faith. She's compassionate and passionate, and both women are like two sides of the same coin.

Ethan Choi – Chicago Med

After the Reveal - Chicago Med Season 5 Episode 18
(NBC/Elizabeth Sisson)

Ethan is a man of honor and duty. He lives to serve, something that came up when he served in the military and does now as he serves others as a doctor.

He's as compassionate as he is self-righteous. He's reckless and always willing to put his life on the line for the betterment of others. He's not a perfect character, but those imperfections are what make him so distinctly human and relatable.

Lara Jean Covey – To All the Boys I've Loved Before

Bubbly, sweet, and enthusiastic, Lara Jean Covey is another character who nails the coming of age story for young girls. But what set hers apart from most is how her culture was expertly woven into her story from holidays, to customs, to food and beverages, and other traditions.

Lara Jean has the classic Girl Next Door vibe. It's something not traditionally shown for young Asian-American girls, so from her hobbies to her love life, and her friendships, and family experiences, Lara Jean is a wonderful representation and she resonates with many.

Lane – Gilmore Girls

Arguably the most relatable teen of the series, Lane was the originator of the Asian teen girl on network TV. Her character paved the way for many after her, including some of the girls who are on this list. Lane was a warm, funny, likable character and a breath of fresh air particularly during a time when it was rare to see characters like her.

Lane's mother had a bit of a hold on her, and she grew up in a household with a traditional, strict mother, and her experience felt real and relatable.

It was also gratifying to see this young woman grapple with her identity and expectations — torn between what her mother wanted for her and what she would have preferred for herself.

Saya – Deadly Class

A dedicated student who excelled at a school of assassins, Saya was a product of the Yakuza and highly-skilled. However, despite an environment that fostered rivalry and tension amongst the students of all walks of life, she was loyal and always willing to fight and protect those close to her, despite their conflicting affiliations.

She was a bit of a teacher's pet, savvy, strong, smart, and a force to be reckoned with, but beneath her tough exterior, there was a softness to her as well. She was another nuanced and complex character.

Eve Polastri – Killing Eve

Confrontation Time - Killing Eve Season 3 Episode 6
(Des Willie/BBCA)

What an utterly complex and captivating character, yes? Sandra Oh is a gift that keeps giving which is why her role on Killing Eve is worth mentioning as well. Eve is a woman who slowly comes to grips with her dark side, and she takes viewers on the ride with her.

Her twisted obsession with Villanelle leads her down a dark, exciting path where she gets to explore her baser instincts and better understand herself, and it's such an unconventional and awe-inspiring role.

Our Favorite Big Bads of the Decade https://www.tvfanatic.com/our-favorite-big-bads-of-the-decade/ https://www.tvfanatic.com/our-favorite-big-bads-of-the-decade/#respond Tue, 31 Dec 2019 15:00:00 +0000 https://www.tvfanatic.com/2019/12/31/our-favorite-big-bads-of-the-decade/ Thinking Well - Tall - iZombie Season 5 Episode 13

It's time to take a look at the best big bads of the decade. Did your favorite make the cut for this round? Read on to get up to speed, TV Fanatics.

The post Our Favorite Big Bads of the Decade appeared first on TV Fanatic.

]]>
At the center of every great TV series, is a villain that viewers love to hate. These villains help propel the narrative forward as they introduced new obstacles for the other characters.

Some of those villains made it to the list of our favorite big bads of the decade.

Please remember that with have almost two dozen favorites lists that we couldn't showcase every show on every list, so we parsed them out a bit to make it more fun.

And these lists are not in any particular order. They're in the order the entries were received by TV Fanatic staff, so don't read into them!

To qualify, a show that began in another decade had to be airing during the decade, run a larger number of seasons from 2010 through 2019 if it started before 2010 or run the entire decade. Here we go!

Red John, The Mentalist – CBS (2008-2015)

No one who watched The Mentalist will ever forget Red John, the sadistic serial killer who murdered Patrick Jane’s wife and daughter and then, as with all of his other victims, left a smiley face on the wall above them drawn in their own blood.

Red John had his own personal flair, using the William Blake poem, “Tyger, Tyger” as his calling card. From the very first episode, Red John drove the series as he tormented Jane and outwitted law enforcement.

The mystery surrounding Red John’s identity was at a fever pitch by season 6 when his identity was finally revealed.

With so many fan theories over six seasons, some still argue whether the “real Red John” was Sheriff MacAllister, but whether you agree with the final outcome or not, the Red John saga won’t easily be forgotten.

Gustavo Fring, Breaking Bad – AMC (2008-2013)

It can be argued that Walter was the true villain of the show, but given that he was the protagonist I will guess we will go with his main adversary instead.

What made Gus such a great villain was how layered he was. The man had two faces, which is ironic given his demise. To the rest of the world, he was the charming, albeit dorky, entrepreneur who created a chain of fast-food chicken restaurants.

Who would have ever guessed he was a drug king-pin who developed a distribution network that made him virtually untouchable, even to the Mexican cartel.

Throughout the majority of his time on the show, you were left questioning if he was really all that bad. It was only in his most desperate moments where his true dark side came out.

The Mind Flayer, Stranger Things – Netflix (2016-present)

While Stranger Things has featured creatures such as the Demogorgon and Demodogs, the Mind Flayer is the real mastermind behind the chaos imposed on our favorite group of kids.

The Mind Flayer has been plotting for years on how to take over the real world as it hides in the Upside Down and has been the indirect cause of some of our favorite characters deaths (though we still believe Hopper is alive).

Who knows what the Mind Flayer has in store for Hawkins residents next, all we know is that as long as they have Eleven, the Mind Flayer will never win.

Jerome Valeska, Gotham – FOX (2014-2019)

There were many villains on Gotham who could have made the grade for big bad of the decade, but Jerome Valeska was the most memorable and scariest of the bunch.

When we first met Jerome, we knew he was special. Everything about him reeked of insanity and although he left our screens for a short time, when he returned full force, he made a huge impact on Gotham's world — and not in a good way.

He was played to perfection by Cameron Monaghan and despite his evil nature, quickly became a fan favorite. Jerome was at his prime as leader of the Maniax who wreaked havoc on the citizens of Gotham — from hijacking a bus full of high school cheerleaders to corrupting Barbara Kean to killing a beloved police commissioner, Jerome had everyone on edge.

His first death at the hands of Theo Galavan was shocking and devastating, but he later returned thanks to experiments by Hugo Strange. Then, he became a more evil, calculating nightmare setting his sights on Bruce Wayne and Jim Gordon until his ultimate demise.

Katherine Pierce aka Katerina Petrova – The Vampire Diaries (2009-2017)

Elena Gilbert’s doppelganger was her polar opposite. Katherine popped up and caused carnage before slipping off into the night for a few seasons.

Her return on the series finale, after becoming the Queen of Hell was the perfect arc for her. The person she loved the most taking her down was the icing on the cake to complete this plot.

Fiona Goode – American Horror Story FX (2011-Present)

Fiona is the supreme for a reason. She is a bad-ass woman, and one would not recommend getting on her bad side. Her reign of madness, in an effort to keep her abilities, made Fiona such a delicious character to watch on screen.

Her power, sharp tongue, and complete selfishness puts her in the category of a great baddie, but she also had a great vulnerability and fear of death that made an audience empathize with her choices.

Those choices being to kill several witches and send another with a vodoman in an effort to remain the supreme. We can’t all be perfect.

I’d even say she could be considered a character to the decade.

Killgrave – Jessica Jones Netflix (2015 – 2019)

The power of persuasion is one thing, but this villain was on another level. His ability to get anyone to do anything he said was terrifying.

He had such unlimited capabilities because he could control almost anyone with just a word. Add to that his complete lack of responsibility for his actions, he was really a loose cannon.

He killed his parents. Granted, his parents did cause this by experimenting on him, but still. His poor mental state definitely puts him higher in the terror range.

Thinking Well - Tall - iZombie Season 5 Episode 13
(Jack Rowand/The CW)

Blaine DeBeers – iZombie – The CW (2015 – 2019)

As much as Liv Moore was the lovable protagonist of iZombie, the series wouldn’t have been the same without the undeniable talent of David Anders as Blaine De Beers.

He took a character who could have been a one-note evil villain and added layers and textures to him, and somehow made a child killer an endearing character. The fascinating part of Blaine was how he managed to flow in and out of being a villain, antagonist, and an anti-hero throughout the course of the season.

He was mostly self-serving from beginning to end, but at times, his interests would align with the supernatural scooby-doo gang, and he would become a begrudging ally. Blaine’s villainy had depth, and he was witty, sarcastic, and fun to watch. A villain you hated to love and loved to hate.

BD Wong as Whiterose - Mr. Robot Season 4 Episode 3
(Elizabeth Fisher/USA Network)

White Rose – Mr. Robot – USA (2015-2019)

White Rose and the Dark Army proved to be a formidable opponent for Elliot.

The reach of which she had made her menacing and ever-present. She via the Dark Army could reach anyone, anywhere, at anytime, which put many people in her crosshairs, and left a trail of bodies through the course of the series.

She had power, prestige, and she was as much of a mental opponent as she was a physical one. She used every tactic in her repertoire with success to reign terror down upon Elliot and his allies.

Keeping along with the theme of this series being groundbreaking and radical in everything it has done and explored, White Rose also had a depth and was an interesting character study as a powerful transgender woman who while terrorizing Elliot to the best of her abilities was not devoid of the pressures and pitfalls of a transphobic society who doesn’t embrace her.

Her vulnerability made her a compelling villain despite what she was doing, and BD Wong was exceptional in the role.

Lucious Talks Cookie Around - Empire Season 6 Episode 9
(FOX)

Lucious Lyon – Empire – FOX (2015- Present)

As the head of the Lyon family, Lucious more often than not was the Lyons worst enemy. He’s greedy, conniving, manipulative, and self-serving.

He was emotionally abusive to those around him, and he stopped at nothing to get what he wants. He was relentless and had no limits.

When he’s on your side, he’s the best type of ally, but when he’s against you, he’s a hell of an opponent. Every Lyon has experienced both sides of Lucious. The list for Decade “Big Bad” wouldn’t be complete without him.

Victoria & Conrad Grayson – Revenge – ABC (2011-2015)

For ABC’s soapy and intriguing drama Revenge to succeed, we needed a ruthless villain to root against as we cheered on Emily Thorne. That villain turned out to be the dastardly married pair of Victoria and Conrad Grayson.

The Graysons were the final goal in Emily’s long-standing revenge plan of returning to the Hamptons. They were responsible for framing Emily’s father for the plane crash and they purposely ruined her life when she was still Amanda Clarke.

In addition to that, Conrad and Victoria were both cold-hearted people who would easily destroy anyone who got in their way of happiness. Conrad utilized more of a business approach while Victoria played the coldest mind games.

It may have taken seasons, but we cheered on when Emily/Amanda could finally get the opportunity to sharpie their faces from her hit list. These are two big bads that have earned their spot on the list!

Jamie Moriarty, Elementary- (2012- 2019)

Natalie Dormer absolutely killed the role of a female Moriarty, Sherlock's infamous nemesis on Elementary.

She was alluring, mysterious, and sexy. She had a fascinating hold on Sherlock — manipulating him into falling in love with her — that made her a worthy adversary with dimension.

Getting stopped, interrogated, or arrested by cops usually isn't anyone's idea of a good time unless the sheriff's and detectives are like the ones we've seen on television.

You know, the caring ones who look damn good in a uniform. Most of the TV cops on this list solve crimes, take down the bad guys, and keep their fictional towns and cities safe from danger. Not to mention, they'd jump in to protect you without hesitation.

We wouldn't mind getting arrested by these men and women in uniform, just don't get on their bad side unless your goal is to end up in handcuffs.

Budd – Bodyguard

Budd, a veteran of the British Army, has years of training, is loyal to a fault, and would risk his own life to protect yours. Plus, he's not opposed to getting involved in a physical relationship with the person he's been tasked with protecting.

On iZombie Season 5 Episode 13, the gang has one last fight as they race to make the zombie cure and stop a zombie-human war. Read our final iZombie review inside!

The post iZombie Season 5 Episode 13 Review: All’s Well That Ends Well appeared first on TV Fanatic.

It's the end of an era.

We had to say goodbye to the lovable, quirky, witty zombie series, and iZombie Season 5 Episode 13 did its best to tie up the series in a bow.

The series finale settled on giving all of our heroes a happy ending.

Coming to a Head - Tall - iZombie Season 5 Episode 13
(Jack Rowand/The CW)

If there was only one word to use to describe the series finale as a whole, it's quaint. In an age where series' cancellations happen all the time without a proper sendoff, one can only be grateful when a beloved series has the time to give fans a conclusion.

The majority of iZombie Season 5 has felt as though there was no real plan on how they wanted to end the series. It felt as though the season carried on as usual and then in the last hours remembered time was up, and it needed to come to an end.

Winner, Winner - Tall - iZombie Season 5 Episode 8
(Bettina Strauss/The CW)

Many of the crucial portions of the series have dragged on so long without them being fully-fleshed out that bringing it together after skimming over them felt empty.

We've heard about this cure for so long that I expected the payout to be bigger than it was. We never saw the effects of anyone of importance taking it onscreen.

Enzo: It seems your friend Major has escaped. Perhaps you would like the chance to beg for your life.

Hobbs: Perhaps you can kiss my —

🔗 permalink: Perhaps you can kiss my —

We never saw how Seattle changed after the distribution of it. We barely saw Ravi creating it, let alone him mass producing it. For something the entire series hinged on for multiple seasons, it didn't have the grand impact one would expect.

Related: iZombie Season 5 Episode 12 Review: Bye, Zombies

Overall, it's how the entire finale felt.

We didn't build up to anything spectacular. It came down to gunfight and a fakeout. For some reason, Dolly — a generic villainess who could've been excluded — was in the wind after killing her child.

Plotting a Zombie Terrorist Attack - Tall - iZombie Season 5 Episode 1
(Robert Falconer/The CW)

The takedown of Enzo was anti-climatic, and a painful reminder of how someone so cartoonish and one-dimensional should have never lasted this long.

Blaine's downfall was incredibly anti-climatic and lackluster.

Related: IZombie: Villain, Antihero, Antagonist, Why Blaine is Irredeemable, and That's OK

He tormented the gang for half a decade; his misdeeds are the most despicable of the series. He's a murderer (of actual children), a smuggler of people and drugs, and the list goes on.

He needed to meet his maker, but for such a grand character, one would expect an actual death in spectacular form. Don E of all people pushed him into his well.

Thinking Well - Tall - iZombie Season 5 Episode 13
(Jack Rowand/The CW)

It was barely worth a reaction. Don E was the most likely person to pull off of a redemption arc, but he ended matters still up Blaine's ass when he had no reason to be.

Then Liv shoved him into the well too. It's a shame that two of the most notable characters, Blaine, in particular, didn't have an emotional death scene like at least three of Liv's ex-boyfriends who had shorter tenures and impact.

Peyton: Blaine smothered a girl with a pillow.

Don E: Well, we all have our hobbies.

Peyton: She was wearing a wedding dress. She was calling out your name.

🔗 permalink: She was wearing a wedding dress. She was calling out your name.

While killing someone, Blaine included, would have been too much for the likes of Ravi, Major or Liv should have at least had the honor of it.

It also became evident early on that the gang would make it out of the hour alive. The end of iZombie Season 5 Episode 12 had Peyton and Major's lives on the line, and the threat was real.

Jane and Rafael - Jane the Virgin

The stakes were not high during this installment. Peyton was shot, and we already knew Blaine would scratch and turn her. Major would put his life at risk, but we knew someone (Ravi) would have a backup plan since Major being reckless is predictable.

Related: iZombie Season 4 is Poised to Be the Best Yet

Peyton's brief stint as a zombie was amusing. She also got to be the hero sacrificing her life to save the zombie kids. It's the most Peyton has had to do in the entire series.

Mrs. Chakrabarti? - Tall - iZombie Season 5 Episode 12
(Diyah Pera/The CW)

Major's storyline was the strongest of the hour. He was able to play an action hero, which has always been him in his element.

From his tactics to gain access to Max Rager to his public takedown of Enzo, to getting the kids to safety, he was on a roll.

Peyton: How funny would it be if now I knocked you in?

🔗 permalink: How funny would it be if now I knocked you in?

Meanwhile, Clive had the happiest moment making it for the birth of his baby girl who he named after Liv. It's the cutest Babimoore thing to happen in the series.

Clive deserves nothing but happiness, so I'm thrilled he had a chill presence during the finale and the big ending of him and his wife both being captains at a San Francisco police department, made me smile.

Clive Clooney - Tall - iZombie Season 5 Episode 12
(Jack Rowand/The CW)

The ten-year time-jump was strange. As with the others, it was never a doubt Liv survived the last explosion. Who was responsible for it anyway? Did Michelle die? If so, that was pretty damn crappy.

Related: How Good Trouble Mastered the Slow-Burn 'Ship

Does that also mean Vampire Steve and Jimmy the sketch bitch are dead? Otherwise, I would wonder why they didn't make at least one appearance in the show's sendoff.

After years of wanting to have a cure, Liv gave it up again so she could settle down with Major and take care of zombie orphans. They became an instant family that never aged, so in a way, they're frozen in time.

In Limbo Again? - iZombie Season 5 Episode 8
(Jack Rowand/The CW)

Why couldn't the children take the cure and go into the system or get adopted? Many of them were young teens; it wouldn't have been long before they were old enough to take care of themselves.

The world thinks Liv is dead, and she and Major have a beautiful house where they reside with their zombie children.

Major: Hey Liv it’s me. I’m about to do something, but if it works big if, it could save lives. Basically what I’ve been asking myself before any big decisions is what would Liv Moore do? Whatever happens, know this. It’s always been you. I always loved you, and I always will. Take care of yourself. Bye.

🔗 permalink: Hey Liv it’s me. I’m about to do something, but if it works big if, it could save lives….

We knew they would always be endgame, but it sucked how they spent the majority of the season shown zero romantic interest in each other when they did interact, and then a kiss in the penultimate episode that came out of nowhere put them back on the path of being each other's endgame.

Related: Good Trouble Season 2 Episode 7 Review: In the Middle

Pairing them up again was an afterthought.

It's unfortunate how the friends don't see each other often. They're in different parts of the country leading separate lives.

Closing Deals - Tall - iZombie Season 5 Episode 8
(Bettina Strauss/The CW)

Liv and Major have chosen to keep the zombie life, so they don't age, but they tease the others about scratching them if necessary.

Ravi is back at the CDC and running it. Who knows? Maybe Charlie works with him.

Related: Veronica Mars Creator Responds to Fan Petition

Peyton is back to practicing law. I'm assuming they're married, but it's too bad we didn't get to see a wedding. The time jump means we missed out on a lot of things.

Liv Is Renegade

It was a cheat move fast-forwarding a decade and glossing over loose-ends.

Given the fact that the series went into their final season knowing it was their final one, the series finale felt like an aimless afterthought.

Related: Veronica Mars Season Finale: Are You Cussing Kidding Me?!

Nevertheless, you can't help but be grateful for the chance to say goodbye to this show and these great characters. Fresh off of Rob Thomas' other series, we know it could have gone a whole lot worse.

Ravi: Hey buddy.

Major: Miss you too.

Ravi: Remarkable. It’s like you’re preserved in amber.

🔗 permalink: Remarkable. It’s like you’re preserved in amber.

IZombie was one of the best and most underrated series on the CW, and it had one of the best cast. I'm going to miss it: the stories, the brains, the characters, and cast — all of it.

After a rocky final season with much to be desired, the final installments of this series are coming in strong.

No doubt about it, iZombie Season 5 Episode 12 was the best hour of the season. It played out like a movie, and not solely because of the heist and Ocean's 11 vibes involving Clavioli or the action movie vibe coming from Major and to a lesser degree Blaine.

I'm going to miss this show a lot, aren't you?

A Devastating Discovery - Tall - iZombie Season 5 Episode 12
(Jack Rowand/The CW)

The problem with the season overall was it took too long to get to the point. The season didn't play out as if it was leading up to a series finale, and it felt as though it was biding its time until the final few installments to pull off a grand finale.

Related: iZombie Season 5 Episode 9 Review: Fresh Princess

It felt like the series forgot it was the final season until now, and they're cramming all the good stuff into the last few episodes. It's noticeable, and I lament the time wasted, but damn if this hour wasn't great anyway.

It's nearly the end of the world as we know it, and Liv and the gang made one last-ditch effort to save humans and zombies alike by stealing the utopium needed for a mass cure from the CDC.

Pick Pocket Brain - Tall - iZombie Season 5 Episode 12
(Jack Rowand/The CW)

The hour had me at "heist." There is nothing like a group of skilled individuals coming together for a heist, and no matter how you break it down, it will be peak entertainment.

The timing was perfect with Ravi on his monthlies; he could consume the necessary brain to pull off the mission along with Liv. She wouldn't have had anyone else to help her pull it off.

Liv: We’re zombies. We don’t need Ocean’s 11 to do this job. We just need the right brains.

🔗 permalink: We’re zombies. We don’t need Ocean’s 11 to do this job. We just need the right brains.

But while Ravi on Russian hacker brain was an absolute delight and Rahul Kohli tapped into my sentimental side by existing during this hour, the real star of the hour was Clive.

Damn right Clive is the Clooney! He's the straight man, the Dad friend, and he keeps their circus running smoothly. The Clavioli scene where Clive, ever the worried dad out of their bunch, struggled to say goodbye to Liv and Ravi triggered allergies.

Clive Clooney - Tall - iZombie Season 5 Episode 12
(Jack Rowand/The CW)

He loves Liv and Ravi so much; he didn't have to say the exact words, but it came out through his fretting and body language. He was worried sick about them going on a mission which could've cost them their lives.

Related: Good Trouble Season 2 Episode 6 Review: Twenty-Fine

He always made it his responsibility to keep them in line but also safe. Somewhere along the way, he assumed responsibility for the two nerds, and he never relinquished it.

Blaine: Acrobat brain, huh? New man in your life? I’ll take that glare as a no. You’re not so good with the boyfriends, no? Speaking of acrobats, how’s Peyton.

🔗 permalink: Acrobat brain, huh? New man in your life? I’ll take that glare as a no. You’re not so good…

What's beautiful about the relationship between Clive and Dale is she knows how much his friends mean to him, and she encouraged him to accompany them on their mission instead of getting upset about it.

Bozzneaux Baby! - Tall - iZombie Season 5 Episode 1
(Bettina Strauss/The CW)

All he needed was her blessing, and he was on his way. Clive Babineaux is a gosh damn gift, and he always has been on this series. Episodes where they showcase how valued he is, are the greatest.

It's a blessing to the fandom when Malcolm Goodwin shows off his many skills. Is there anything he can't do? He played the honeypot and dazzled Gladys with his weird cat skill and those incredible dance moves.

Rumpshaker - Tall - iZombie Season 5 Episode 12
(Jack Rowand/The CW)

Everything about Clive in that ballroom was a delight and left me giggling nonstop. Gladys was a tiger, but he handled it well, and Liv kept getting distracted while on pickpocket/grifter brain, but he handled her well too.

Related: Pearson Season 1 Episode 2 Review: The Superintendent

They captured the different roles and unique personalities of a heist team well. Clive was also hilarious when he breezed past the racist guard who assumed all black men looked alike. Clive and the janitor he was portraying looked nothing alike!

Liv: The rotting brain of a dead pickpocket. This is the nicest thing anyone has ever did for me.

🔗 permalink: The rotting brain of a dead pickpocket. This is the nicest thing anyone has ever did for me.

Ravi and Liv on the ninja warrior brain were cute because of them working together. It was shocking to see Ravi go full Romero on the CDC guy though. It was the closest Ravi ever came to damn near killing someone.

The mission was a success for the team, and they all survived it, but no one is out of the woods yet, and all hell broke loose back in Seattle.

Cooking Up a Master Plan - tall - iZombie Season 5 Episode 12
(Diyah Pera/The CW)

At the moment, the two main characters who are in the most jeopardy are Peyton and Major. Peyton's task was simple; she was in charge of taking care of the zombie children while Liv was away.

It should've been an easy task, but Blaine's intel revealed Ravi was the one who took his Freylic shipment. It's disappointing that Peyton didn't catch on she was being tailed. She led Blaine and Don E right to the hideout, and the coyote Blaine killed led them in the door.

It used to be a time where Blaine even considering killing Peyton was unbelievable. His feelings for her were real. However, Blaine is a full-blown villain now.

Mrs. Chakrabarti? - Tall - iZombie Season 5 Episode 12
(Diyah Pera/The CW)

I'm happy the show is committing to Blaine's villainy. At this rate, most of us are actively rooting for his demise. Blaine has never been a redeemable character, but they at least knew how to tease the idea.

Redeeming Blaine would've been a cop-out, but the buildup from Blaine the ambiguous, charming antagonist to Blaine the hardened, asshole, evil villain was abrupt.

Peyton: Take care of Ravi please, I’m probably going to marry the guy.

🔗 permalink: Take care of Ravi please, I’m probably going to marry the guy.

He didn't ease into the cold-hearted, evil antagonist; it was a blink and you missed it transition which happened somewhere between the installments where he was missing, and it gave me whiplash.

Money Man - Tall - iZombie Season 5 Episode 1
(Bettina Strauss/The CW)

Related: iZombie: Villain, Antagonist, Antihero — Why Blaine is Irredeemable and That's OK!

He came in hot trying to goad Liv and Ravi, he killed the coyote, and God only knows what he might do to Peyton. Killing her is a possibility for him, and it's something that wouldn't have been on the table two seasons ago.

Peyton is a beloved character who often struggled to have decent storylines. If she died, it would be sad, but it also would be a plausible narrative choice. Plus, she mentioned marrying Ravi, and I wouldn't put it past this series to rip our hearts out like this.

Recon and Plotting - iZombie Season 5 Episode 12
(Diyah Pera/The CW)

There is also a chance Major could die. The hour ended with him in a dire position. The Deadenders, CHIC, and Enzo have succeeded in starting a war between humans and zombies. Enzo has gotten the FG soldiers to turn on Major for good.

Related: 19 TV Couples Who Could Kill Each Other

He's on his own, injured, and he's about to go on a suicide mission for Liv and to save the city. I don't want Major to die; it would devastate me.

Major: I’m really glad we’re at this place in our relationship where we can dig up a grave without having to talk.

🔗 permalink: I’m really glad we’re at this place in our relationship where we can dig up a grave without…

It's an ending which would fit his character though. He's always the guy who runs toward the action, not away from it. He's always jumping headfirst into danger without a second thought.

Heavy is the Head - Tall - iZombie Season 5 Episode 2
(Michael Courtney/The CW)

He would sacrifice himself a million times over to save the people he cares about or people in general. It's who he is. Major Lillywhite is and has always been the action star of the series.

He's prime for dying a hero's death. And if he died saving people and completing his mission, he would die a happy man.

Cheers to Family
(The CW (iZombie Official Twitter))

The season didn't do the best job building the romantic portion of his relationship with Liv back up. For most of the season, they barely crossed paths long enough to hint at romance, and when they did, the romantic tension wasn't there.

However, their moment digging the grave together was their best of the hour. It was a cute scene of them reminiscing on the ups and downs in their relationship and recognizing how much of a rollercoaster it has been.

He kidnapped her, and she turned him into a zombie to save him. They were engaged once. They have been through it all.

Clive: We are in the south now. You don’t put stolen jewelry in a black man’s pocket.

Liv: It’s not in your pocket.

🔗 permalink: It’s not in your pocket.

Their kiss was the icing on the cake. Although, when you think about Blaine making the crack about Liv's boyfriends, it's hard not to take it as ominous given how the hour ended.

If Major dies, you can rest assured, I will not be OK!

It's the Beginning of the End

This is really it, you guys! Only one more episode of this underrated series left, and I'm a mess thinking about it. How about you?

Did you love the heist? What are your thoughts about Blaine's turn to unrelenting villain with no charm? Who do you think the series will kill off?

On iZombie Season 5 Episode 9, Liv falls into some '90s nostalgia while investigating the death of a beauty pageant contestant, and Peyton and Ravi team up. Read on!

It was rude and disrespectful to remind us that the '90s were 20 years ago!

Although, iZombie Season 5 Episode 9, did make up for it by playing the Spice Girls and giving us a bemused Clive enjoying Liv on '90's teen girl pageant brain.

It was cute, and the rest of the hour gave us a heaping dose of Pavi and a glimpse of Evan. Cool beans, right?

Clueless - Tall - iZombie Season 5 Episode 9
(Jack Rowand/The CW)

The issue here is as enjoyable as Rose Mciver is flexing her skills by playing a different version of one character every installment; it's the final season.

I had to double check the episode order for this final season. It's 13 episodes; we just wrapped the ninth installment. We still don't have any direction on how the series will end.

Related: iZombie Season 5 Episode 8 Review: Death of a Car Salesman

It makes the previous installments, some of which are enjoyable aimless. Where are we going with this? Peyton and Blaine, more often than not, were sidelined most of the season.

PR Managing - iZombie Season 5 Episode 2
(Michael Courtney/The CW)

Blaine's entire presence during the hour was sitting in the dark in the basement apartment of Don E's mom's house being a snarky asshole to Peyton and Ravi.

It's as if he's there, idle, waiting for the time when he bites the bullet and pays a long-term consequence for his litany of offenses wracked up over five years.

It was a decent hour for Peyton in regards to having actual screentime, and she and Ravi were a cute team investigating Beanpole and the Utopium (and it was cool seeing the Cobra gang leader again), but anything of substance happened offscreen.

Martin: My daughter seems to have a lot of friends in high places, a private military commander and the mayor herself.

🔗 permalink: My daughter seems to have a lot of friends in high places, a private military commander and…

The city council fired her as mayor, but we didn't see any of the politics there, and it was due to her using the funds to create Hi, Zombie, which has yet to play a significant enough role for us to care about it.

Related: Good Trouble Season 2 Episode 2 Review: Torn

All this time wasted with Peyton not having much to do, and it's something her character has struggled with for more than one season now.

Ravi's quest to create a mass zombie cure has been the most dragged out storyline of the series, and the most irritating thing about it is how little it's shown or fleshed out.

Winner, Winner - Tall - iZombie Season 5 Episode 8
(Bettina Strauss/The CW)

Where is Dr. Collier? Why is it the last time they showed her it was because of her needing to send Ravi on another senseless fool's run to find her twin sister? Ravi laments the manhunt for Freylich kids, but they don't have him do anything about it.

They pick up and dust off his zombie quest once every blue moon and then stick him on his zombie monthlies for the laughs. He throws out a quip about how much he hates Blaine and reminds us of how awful Blaine is and how overdue he is for his comeuppance, and then it's back to investigating random victims.

Ravi: We don’t bargain with kid-murdering, cure-thieving pieces of sh-

Peyton: Done.

🔗 permalink: We don’t bargain with kid-murdering, cure-thieving pieces of sh-

It's valuable time wasted; it feels like we're biding time waiting for the grand conclusion with no buildup. If nothing is making much sense now, will it be satisfactory in four episodes? Doubtful.

Where are all the zombie kids? What does Liv do with them? Who watches them while they're cooped up in hiding? Why are we supposed to care about them?

Will Dale be on bedrest this entire time? Why did they bring Michelle back?

Bozzneaux Baby! - Tall - iZombie Season 5 Episode 1
(Bettina Strauss/The CW)

We get all those sweet Clive moments where he looks at his friends and colleagues fondly and paternally, which I suppose is to hammer home how ready he is and great of a father he'll be, but we knew that already. Clive has always been the Dad Friend.

What's going on with Liv and Major's relationship? Are they not going to discuss if they are together or not? Are they together or not?

In Limbo Again? - iZombie Season 5 Episode 8
(Jack Rowand/The CW)

Their tension from being on opposite sides of matters during all of iZombie Season 4 feels unresolved, and now they're orbiting around one another on occasion, but nothing is happening.

What is Blaine even doing anymore? Do we know? Shouldn't he have a court case coming up or something? What are his plans with the Freylich brains?

Has he found ways to acquire them? Are he and Don E on the outs for good? What's going on with Mr. Boss or his niece for that matter?

Interview with a Zombie - Tall - iZombie Season 5 Episode 4
(Jack Rowand/The CW)

Everything about Major leading Fillmore Graves feels like they're stuck in limbo waiting. They're waiting for the Deadenders to do something stupid, or the CHICS leader who disappears for installments at a time and somehow, stupefyingly hasn't been caught or killed.

Dolly's plans aren't even imaginative. She's vocal about her stance on zombies. She does things out in the open.

How hasn't she been brought in for questioning more or investigated more? How isn't she not suspected when things happen?

Hello Dolly - Tall - iZombie Season 5 Episode 1
(Bettina Strauss/The CW)

It doesn't make sense how she has done as much as she has been able to do right under everyone's noses.

Only a couple of people could be responsible for Sloan's disappearance. It was either going to be Martin or Dolly. There are no prominent DeadEnders for them to factor in.

Dolly's plans are as transparent as glass, so it wasn't a surprise when she shoved Sloan and her boyfriend into a portapotty until they became full-Romero and unleashed them on innocent humans.

Ravi: What is this? She eat the cast of Clueless or something?

Clive: Nineties pageant girl brain.

🔗 permalink: Nineties pageant girl brain.

Dolly wants to start a war, and she's spent a few times this season doing something big and terrorizing humans and zombies alike to make it happen.

Major being forced to put a bullet in Sloan's head didn't carry much emotional weight at all. Most of the time I forgot about Sloan, so if it was meant to be heartbreaking, it missed the mark.

But this is a season that somehow took a more familiar character (Justin) and made his death blase too.

The End is Near - Tall - iZombie Season 5 Episode 8
(Bettina Strauss/The CW)

Sloan was the last bargaining chip Major had with the General to keep Seattle from being bombed, but little does he know, it doesn't matter anyway. Martin and Dolly are two sides of the same coin hoping to start chaos and war until either humans or zombies are the victors.

It's almost to the point where I want the government to nuke New Seattle already; get it over with, I say!

Evan: Who the hell is this guy and what the hell is his rug?

🔗 permalink: Who the hell is this guy and what the hell is his rug?

It doesn't feel right complaining about Evan's reappearance when we waited this long to see the kid again, but everything about Eva and Evan's reappearance this season feels like they threw them in to appease fans who we were questioning where they were all this time.

I'm grateful, and I understand they did the best they could, but it's unsatisfying. Evan and Liv barely shared screentime. Liv found out her little brother had cancer and needed to get out of the country in one fail swoop with no time to react.

Mommy Troubles - Tall - iZombie Season 5 Episode 9
(Jack Rowand/The CW)

They dumped Martin's identity on Evan, and it was over with just as fast. Next thing you know Liv is ushering her sick brother she hasn't seen or spoken to in years and her mother whose attempt at reconciliation was half-assed at best through the smuggle door.

Eva expressed no guilt, concern, or anything other than mild disdain for Liz and inconvenienced by her zombies. They never had any fuzzy, warm moments. Eva hasn't given a crap about her daughter all of this time and only mustered pleasantries because of her needing Liv's services to help the child she does give a damn about.

Liv: U-G-L-Y, Gayle ain’t got no alibi.

🔗 permalink: U-G-L-Y, Gayle ain’t got no alibi.

Did she have a right to be pissed off about Liv reaching out to her birth father when she cut Liv off, deprived her of family, and has an open distaste for zombies?

However, it's annoying how Liv takes Martin at face-value when everything about him is weird. She should be more guarded, but she has unfurled her entire life to this man without knowing much of anything about him. Liv being this gullible is inexplicable, especially when Peyton tracked down Beanpole with the few clicks on the computer.

Helping Martin Quit - iZombie Season 5 Episode 9
(Jack Rowand/The CW)

Liv's father is the Utopium druglord and father of zombies. Are you surprised?

Martin does seem to care about his children. He wanted Evan to be scratched; he's mostly anti-human, although he liked Peyton. He also wants Liv to join him whenever he enacts this plan he's putting into motion.

He has discovered Liv is hopeful, decent, and not a homicidal nutbag, so I don't know what he expects.

Martin: You are just the best daughter that I can imagine, Liv. Truly. I want you to promise that if the time should come that you and I should have to choose sides that you’ll let me take care of you.

🔗 permalink: You are just the best daughter that I can imagine, Liv. Truly. I want you to promise that if…

But shoutout to Don E who has been a gem this season. It was hilarious how he and Darcy screwed up Major's investigation and tried to good news/bad news how they tracked her down but chased her to her death.
