After one time of giving in and doing cocaine, Fiona found herself in legal trouble and at risk of losing all of her younger siblings when the baby ended up overdosing on cocaine that Fiona was doing.

That defining moment of realizing how similar she was to her parents’ irresponsibility was enough to kick Fiona’s get-right into high gear.

She stayed sober, bought an apartment building, and moved into her own place. She eventually chose to live her own life and leave behind the responsibilities of raising her siblings.

D’arcy Bloom – Resident Alien

D’arcy Bloom (Alice Wetterlund) is your typical basketcase with repressed trauma she treats with booze, drugs, and promiscuity.

On Resident Alien, she leans too heavily on her best friend, Asta Twelvetrees (Sara Tomko), and she often crosses that thin line of obsession.

When Asta starts spending more time with Harry and keeping his alien secret, D’arcy’s downward spiral begins.

Her rock bottom happens when she decides to show how much she loves her best friend by taking Harry’s place as the one who places the weapon to stop the end of Earth.

Kevin Pearson – This is Us

Justin Hartley is currently stealing hearts as the elusive, closed-off tracker, Colter Shaw on Tracker. But before that and post-Green Arrow in Smallville, he played the troubled actor Kevin Pearson on This is Us.

As a kid, he had many issues that made this momma want to make some major attitude adjustments. Bravo to Mandy Moore for her patience.

Those narcissistic tendencies followed him into adulthood, leading to him becoming a pompous, self-centered a-hole who couldn’t manage his own life.

He held back his twin sister, Kate (Chrissy Metz), for years, leading to her developing serious weight problems and health issues.

His breakdown started when he turned 36 and had a meltdown on live TV that led him to quit his acting job as “The Manny.”

His spiral continued as he ended up addicted to pain pills after knee surgery, which led to getting a DUI in the second season. It was his rock bottom when he ended up driving drunk with his niece in the back seat.

He got sober for a while, but like most addicts, he relapses during times of stress. His drinking also impacted Kate’s high-risk pregnancy.

She required an ambulance to get her to the hospital during pre-term labor because he was too drunk to drive. His drinking led to several failed relationships.

Danny Perez – The Good Doctor

Fans of The Good Doctor are still mourning after the cancellation of The Good Doctor after seven seasons.

While we said goodbye to most of the cast at the end of The good Doctor, a few of our favorites left before the last episode, the death of Asher Wolke (Noah Galvin) was possibly one of the most traumatizing scenes of the season among all shortened seasons.

But before Asher died, we said goodbye to another of our favorite doctors. Danny Perez (Brandon Larracuente) was the show’s redemption arc, following the trope of a doctor struggling with addiction.

He arrived in the sixth season as a first-year surgical resident in recovery from an opioid addiction. We learned about his addiction when he and Dr. Jordan Allen fell in love.

His rock bottom happened with a heroin drug overdose that led to the loss of his job. Allen saved his life by discovering him in time, but it strained their relationship.

He spent time in rehab before earning his job back on probation. His character left the show after he was in a serious accident, and Jordan treated him with opioids despite his wishes, ruining his sobriety.

In the series finale, we saw him ten years in the future, and it turns out he and Jordan reunited and married. Happy endings do happen after bad things!

Hannah Asher – Chicago Med

Chicago Med is another show with the addicted doctor trope. This time, the doctor was a female and an OB/GYN.

Fans met Hannah Asher (Jessy Schram) on Chicago Med in the throes of her heroin addiction. She hid it well at first and only got discovered because Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) was moonlighting at a safe injection site where she was using.

It was a scary time watching her in active addiction while treating patients. Nightmares are made of doctors mishandling medical cases while under the influence.

It’s even more terrifying that she was dealing with mothers and their babies — often before they were unborn.

After an OD causes Hannah to come into the ER and everyone learns she’s an addict, she leaves Chicago to work on her recovery. Fans were thrilled to see her return after two years of sobriety.

She maintains her sobriety and has helped Sean Archer make amends with his addict son, which has helped keep him clean and sober.

David Rossi – Criminal Minds

Not all situations where someone hits rock bottom occur due to drug use. David Rossi (Joe Mantegna) is a brilliant yet tortured FBI agent on Criminal Minds.

But when you work on the cases he does, and you deal with the awful people he does, it’s expected that you have some mental trauma.

Rossi has been through a lot of stuff, from multiple divorces to losing the love of his wife shortly after remarrying her the second time.

Getting held hostage and nearly dying at the hands of a psychopath, Elias Voit (Zach Gilford), was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

And as if that isn’t enough to make any man a bit messed up, Voight is helping the FBI, particularly the BAU, by taking down an elusive killing organization.

We really saw Rossi break mentally in Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2 Episode 6 when the voices in his head turned into full-blown hallucinations. The entire season has put major emphasis on David’s PTSD.

It’s only going to get better when he addresses the issues. He’s made small steps, but we don’t know if he’ll recover fully.

Or if the strain of the BAU is too much after all these years, and he’s done like his predecessors Hodges and Gideon. Both former BAU agents experienced their own mental torments and mental struggles.

Gregory House – House

Gregory House (Hugh Laurie) is the doctor who started the trope of addiction. Sure, he had a bum leg, and that made it easy to score legally obtained pain pills.

This was the pre-opioid epidemic when doctors didn’t have such tight restrictions on how they prescribed powerfully addictive narcotics.

But even for the times, it seemed outrageously easy for House to score pills. Despite his brilliance, House had the worst bedside manner, making zero effort to comfort or educate his patients.

Under the guise of research and treatment for his chronic leg pain, House engaged in various self-destructive experiments, allowing himself to be a guinea pig as a form of self-punishment.

Due to his drug use and disregard for personal safety, House experienced cardiac arrest, overdoses, and frequent hallucinations.

Throughout the eight years the show was on the air, he had multiple rock-bottom moments, including going to prison at the end of Season 7.

In House Season 8, we saw him fake his own death to avoid going back to prison so he could spend time with his best friend, who was dying.

It was a total mess and over-the-top, troped-out narcissistic brilliance that would never happen in the real world. Making it great to get lost in the disbelieving scenarios.

Josephine Petrovitch – Chicago PD

If you’re up to date on Chicago PD, you know all about the crazy changes that have taken place recently.

Burgess is dealing with PTSD after getting shot. Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) left in Season 9, leaving behind a heartbroken Hailey (Tracy Spiridakos), who also left in the Chicago PD Season 12 finale.

Upton experienced some emotional trauma of her own as she had to keep Voight’s secret, cover a murder, and deal with the abrupt departure from her romantic partner without answers.

She punished herself through exercise, an addictive behavior profiled by the newest member to assist the CPD, Jo Petrovic (Bojana Novakovic).

Petrovic occupied more episodes as a behavioral analyst than some of our regular series characters, and the fans did not react warmly to her. She was offputting from the start, giving us the typical cop we love to hate.

Despite being good at her job, she had a problem with alcohol, a secret that was easy to spot from the start if you’ve lived the experience. Despite taking an oath to protect the city of Chicago, she often put them at risk by drinking and driving.

Her rock bottom happened when she crashed her car into a brick wall while drunk out of her mind and trying to respond to a case.

If Upton hadn’t found her at the scene and done some nasty coverup work, we have no doubt it would have been the end of Petrovic’s career. Even after Upton blackmailed Petrovic into rehab, she didn’t take treatment seriously.

Coming face to face with her destructive behaviors made Upton evaluate her life and see the similarities before she hit rock bottom, too. Although her departure from CPD might count as a life crisis to some.

JJ Deveraux – Days of Our Lives

JJ Deveraux (Casey Moss) arrived in Salem in 2013 as an angry kid who felt abandoned after getting shipped off to boarding school following his father’s death.

He started exhibiting destructive tendencies as a way to express his pain, often turning to alcohol and weed to cope.

Once his mom moved on with a new boyfriend, Dr. Daniel Jonas, he focused his anger on the intruder. His aggressive mannerisms continued to worsen despite interventions from those around him, landing him in jail for breaking a store window with a chair during an outburst.

He spent the night in the slammer because his mom wouldn’t bail him out. Things worsened a few weeks later when he started hanging out with Theresa Donovan as an act of rebellion against his mother.

When Theresa OD’ed on drugs, JJ had to rely on his mom’s boyfriend to save her life and keep himself out of trouble. In exchange for helping Theresa and keeping it a secret, Daniel requires JJ to get sober and stay out of trouble.

Sometimes, as seen here on Days of Our Lives, it takes someone who cares enough not to give an addict their way to make an actual impact.

Danny Cho and Amy Lau – Beef

In Beef, Danny (Steven Yeun) and Amy (Ali Wong) share a feud that unravels their lives and destroys relationships.

The two enemies meet through an unfortunate road rage incident, which sets a series of petty revenge attempts in motion as each person tries to get over the other.

Amy is a successful, self-made entrepreneur who is living her best life. Danny is less satisfied, going around with a massive chip on his shoulder.

Once his anger gets set on his opponent, neither becomes willing to call a truce that would end the absurd beef.

In the end, the pair reach rock bottom when they destroy themselves and each other’s lives.

Although darkly entertaining, the scenarios that led to their lowest points were immature and outrageous. But at least they hit rock bottom together as they discovered their true selves.

Jubal Valentine – FBI

FBI fans have loved Jubal Valentine (Jeremy Sisto) from the start, despite or maybe because of his various traumas.

We’ve seen several storylines revolving around Jubal’s personal life, from his struggles with alcoholism to having a chronically ill son.

The traumas are mostly ignored, only randomly popping back into play when they need some extra character drama.

Jubal’s rock bottom was especially hard to watch because he seemed like he had full control of his addiction enough not to relapse.

He threw away ten years of sobriety when he caved in from the stress of worrying about his son’s illness. Once he relapsed into drinking again, he started to do it on the job.

It’s another case of powerful government officials misusing their power position while under the influence. Luckily for fans, those around Jubal noticed his slip before any real damage could be done.

As a professional alcoholic, Jubal was able to reign in his addiction without having to go to rehab. He reached out to his sponsor, looped in his intimate circle, and returned to his AA support group.

Edmundo “Eddie” Diaz – 9-1-1

Throughout Eddie’s time on 9-1-1, he’s been the responsible single father to his son, Christopher. Before firefighting, Eddie (Ryan Guzman) served in the Army and came home as a decorated veteran.

Post-service, Eddie battles complicated feelings about his time in the military and what he experienced while deployed.

To say he has a touch of PTSD is an understatement. Despite that, he’s fantastic at his new career of firefighting. However, he resigned from being a firefighter during his rock bottom period.

After receiving devastating news about his former Army comrades, he, in an act of frustration, hits everything in his room with a baseball bat.

Having a strong best friend like Buck to talk through helped ease some of his guilt and trauma. And he enrolled in therapy to get rid of his demons and find inner peace.

Although he’s been on the mend, his recent actions with his dead wife’s doppelganger look-alike have led to destroying his new relationship.

It also caused problems with his son, who moved in with his grandparents in the 9-1-1 Season 7 Episode 10 finale.

Annalise Keating – How to Get Away with Murder

Annalise Keating (Viola Davis) is a powerful and badass criminal defense attorney and law professor with an enthusiastic group of law students willing to do anything to be just like her.

Things first start to go wrong when a group of four students become intertwined in a murder coverup.

Although the FBI and DA couldn’t prove it at the time, they suspect Annalise in several crimes, including the death of her husband, Sam Keating.

By the sixth season, Annalise has fallen far from her powerful perch, overindulging in alcohol and drugs after learning of the death of Emmett.

Her rock bottom occurred when she woke up in the hospital after her bender. After admitting she has a problem stemming from her recent life choices, she ends up in rehab.

On Station 19 Season 7 Episode 3, the firehouse fam attends a Pride parade to celebrate Seattle's LGBTQ+ community. For a full recap and review, check out TV Fanatic Jasmine Blu's expert take on True Colors!

During the Pride parade, a car backfires, the sound is mistaken for a gunshot, and chaos erupts. As painful as it is, this is an entirely predictable series of events because Shondaland loves to give marginalized communities a tragedy to rally around.

Don't get us wrong. We love this universe. Everything Shonda Rhimes touches turns to gold.

But we'd be remiss if we ignored the fact that sometimes it's hard to stomach some of the painful storylines vulnerable communities have to endure in the worlds she builds.

Looking back on the history of Shonda's television empire, it's clear that this isn't a new phenomenon. LGBTQ+ people aren't the only ones who tend to get shafted, either.

Throughout each of the series, Shonda and her team of writers have worked to integrate real-life issues into these shows. More often than not, vulnerable groups take the brunt of this effort. One that tends to suffer in Shondaland: women.

Sexual Assault in Shondaland

In Shonda Rhimes' primetime television history, there's never been a show that didn't include some sort of sexual assault storyline for a female character. Let's take a look at some examples:

How to Get Away With Murder Season 1 Episode 13 details a heartbreaking part of its main character's past with the revelation that Annalise was sexually abused as a child.

On Scandal, the shocking news that Fitz's father assaulted Mellie rocked the fandom.

Grey's Anatomy has dealt with the issue of sexual assault more than once in its two-decade long run. Patients and doctors alike have been victimized.

Private Practice's resident psychiatrist, Violet Turner, has a backstory that includes rape and a subsequent abortion. Charlotte is violently attacked on-screen, and more than one patient suffers in this way as well.

On Station 19 Season 5, Episode 15, Andy is assaulted outside a bar and forced to defend herself. She isn't the only Station 19 character with this pain in her past.

What is the reason behind all of these incredible women being forced to endure such horrific violence? Is it an attempt to make them relatable to the millions of women who have been through similar events?

It sends a strange message, frankly. Can women be written as strong characters without having to overcome an assault?

Even when it doesn't involve sexual violence, Shonda's leading ladies get brutalized.

A patient physically beat Meredith. Olivia Pope was kidnapped and tortured. Jo Wilson escaped an abusive marriage. Violet Turner was attacked while pregnant and her baby kidnapped by a patient.

At a certain point, we have to wonder: is this treatment of women designed to provoke an emotional response from a predominantly female fan base?

Shonda's Tragic LGBTQ+ Characters

Don't worry; women aren't suffering alone in Shondaland.

As if Station 19's shooting-that-isn't-really-a-shooting isn't bad enough, Maya (one of two LGBTQ+ women on the show) has to deal with finding out her brother is a homophobe who joins a group of protesters in intimidating parade attendees.

Not for nothing; non-straight characters in Shonda's universe take hits all the time.

As recently as Grey's Anatomy Season 20 Episode 2, an LGBTQ+ patient receives an HIV diagnosis (in a pretty terrible way) and has to deal with the aftermath.

In 20 years of Grey's Anatomy, the number of tragic (or just heartbreaking) endings for LGBTQ+ couples has added up to a staggering number.

Arizona Robbins and Callie Torres: divorced. Nico Kim and Levi Schmidt: broken up. Amelia Shepherd and Kai Bartley: broken up and separated by an ocean. Teddy Altman and Allison Robin Brown: separated by a tragic death.

And who can forget the very first gay kiss on Grey's between patient Darren Covington and his clandestine lover, Todd (which would have been great if Darren hadn't unceremoniously died shortly after that)?

Shonda's shows sometimes play into the Bury Your Gays trope, with notable LGBTQ+ characters meeting tragic ends:

Annalise Keating (How to Get Away With Murder), James Novak (Scandal), Bizzy AND Susan (Private Practice), Travis's husband, Michael (Station 19) — all dead.

Watching these shows — or even just the promos for episodes like Station 19's True Colors — can give the impression that there is a specific agenda and vulnerable groups are usually at the center.

Shondaland's big hits have addressed everything from racism to sexism to ableism, and to be entirely fair, these topics are usually handled with grace. Most of the time, the issues come up on screen when they're especially relevant in the real world.

Jack: I’m afraid to talk to anyone right now, not just you, to anyone. I’m afraid to talk to my best friend.

Diane: Miller.

Jack: I’m afraid I’m gonna get every word wrong or even one word. I know I’m not a racist…

Diane: Oh, you do realize ‘I’m not racist’ is kind of the club slogan of racists, and that’s because we live in a culture built on white supremacy. So the racism is baked in, and we can’t begin to undo it until we name it and own it.

Jack: OK, see this is exactly my point. I’m damned if I do and damned if I don’t. Cops take a knee, join the protests, they’re called hypocrites. And Dixon, he is a hypocrite. He is racist. But it can’t be that across the board?

Diane: You come to see me twice a month, so I have to assume that you like me, right? You like that I give you tough love and don’t pull punches, and you came in here today, looking for some clarity. So, here it is. I know what you mean when you say you aren’t racist, and I believe that you do not have the hatred in your heart, but you also aren’t damned, not even in the least bit. You’re blessed as hell. I know you grew up on the streets, and the system, and I’m not diminishing your hardship, but you are…

Jack: I’m privileged because I’m white, I get it.

From the perspective of an LGBTQ+ woman, it's easy to say that sometimes it would be nice to escape the real world for an hour. But there's a privilege in escapism, and perhaps spreading awareness of global issues is more important than getting a break from feeling marginalized.

Maybe Shonda Rhimes does target vulnerable groups, but her intentions are as much about making important statements on challenging issues as they are about getting views.

Far be it from us to tell Shonda how to do her job, but we'd love to see a gay couple get a happy ending or a woman rise to the top without having to be victimized first.

We'll hold our breath.

In the meantime, we'll keep watching Ms. Rhimes' work and getting our hearts broken over and over again.

Thursday nights on ABC were once the night that Shonda Rhimes built from start to finish, with Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and the aforementioned legal drama setting the interwebs on fire every week.

The series was a bonafide hit from the start and constantly had social media ablaze as viewers were thrust into murderous coverups and shocking twists every season.

It’s been over three years since the series signed off, and while we’re still reliving all the bloody mayhem during our various rewatches, the cast has moved on to other projects. And what projects might those be? Let’s look at what the cast of How To Get Away With Murder is doing now!

Viola Davis – Annalise Keating

Annalise Keating was the heart and soul of the whole ship.

We all remember that iconic walk into the classroom during How To Get Away With Murder Season 1 when she met her new group of students and introduced us to the premise for the iconic series.

EGOT winner Viola Davis appeared in all 90 episodes and was also a producer on the series. She won a Primetime Emmy for the role in 2015 as Best Leading Actress in a Drama.

Davis was a well-respected and popular actress on the stage and big screen before the series and had roles in hit films like Eat Pray Love, Prisoners, and The Help.

On stage, she won a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for her performance in King Hedley II and a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for her role in Fences.

During her run on the series, Davis also won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her turn in Fences (2016), where she reprised her role from the play that won her a Tony.

Since the series wrapped, Davis has appeared in hit movies like The Suicide Squad and The Woman King and will next be seen in the much anticipated The Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.

Billy Brown – Nate Lahey

The audience had a complicated relationship with Nate Lahy.

Nate’s allegiances seemed to waver at times, as his relationship with Annalise was about as up and down as it gets throughout the series. And while he walked away at the end a free man, he was one of the characters who got away with murder.

His portrayer, Billy Brown, had a lengthy filmography prior to his role on the show, with multi-episode stints on shows like Dexter, Sons of Anarchy, and Hostages.

Most recently, Billy Brown was in one episode of Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake, and while he doesn’t have any other projects currently in production, we wouldn’t be surprised to see him popping up in something else soon.

Alfred Enoch – Wes Gibbins

In a series filled with death, Wes’s death was perhaps the hardest one of all.

So much of the earlier seasons were seen through Wes’s eyes, and his untimely death during How To Get Away With Murder Season 3 changed the course of the series in various ways.

Coming into the series, the English actor was most known for his roles as Dean Thomas in the Harry Potter film series. Enoch appeared in all but one of the famed films.

Enoch also appeared in numerous plays throughout London, including The Tempest, The Seagull, Timon of Athens, and Coriolanus.

After his time on the series ended, Enoch returned to the stage in plays like What A Carve Up, The Picture of Dorian Gray, and As You Like It.

On the big screen, he could be seen in the Brazilian dystopian film Executive Order and the British comedy This is Christmas. Most recently, he had a recurring role on the Apple TV+ hit Foundation.

As for the future, Enoch will star in The Couple Next Door, a British six-part thriller currently in post-production. And we’re excited to see the talented actor back on the small screen!

Jack Falahee – Connor Walsh

One-half of the fan-favorite ship ‘Coliver,’ Connor was brazen and never afraid to speak his mind, which got him into trouble sometimes but also endeared him to the audience.

His relationship with Oliver Hampton softened him in many ways, though their relationship had a lot of ups and downs along the way.

Jack Falahee starred in all 90 episodes of the series. Before his turn as the devilish Connor, Falahee had a recurring role on the Avon Jogia-fronted teen drama Twisted. He also had a recurring role on the PBS medical drama Mercy Street while starring on the ABC drama.

Most recently, Falahee had a role in the dark comedy Hayseed, which was released in April 2023. The thrilling tale tells the story of a church congregation put on the hot seat when their reverend turns up dead.

Aja Naomi King – Michaela Pratt

Michaela Pratt was perhaps the most ambitious of the Keating 5, as she came to Middletown with high expectations and was always prepared to do whatever was necessary to get ahead and preserve her name.

The talented Aja Naomi King came into the series with a few credits to her name, including guest spots on Blue Bloods, Person of Interest, and The Blacklist, and a leading role on The CW medical drama Emily Owens, M.D.

While filming the legal drama, she had roles in films like Birth of a Nation and The Upside. And since How To Get Away With Murder ended, she’s continued her film career with Sylvie’s Love, The 24th, and Boxing Day.

As of 2023, she can be seen in the Apple TV+ miniseries Lessons in Chemistry alongside Brie Larson. And we highly recommend checking out the engaging series.

Matt McGorry – Asher Millstone

Who didn’t adore the ever-lovable Asher Millstone?

On a series so dark and twisted, Asher was often the comic relief much of the time, though he proved himself to be just as competent and competitive as his counterparts.

Standout Matt McGorry first came to prominence by portraying corrections officer John Bennett on the Netflix megahit Orange is the New Black and was starring in both that series and How To Get Away With Murder at the same time.

Most recently, McGorry starred in 8 episodes of Archive 81 in 2022 and an episode of Big Shot that same year.

Karla Souza – Laurel Castillo

Little did we know when the series began just how much Laurel Castillo’s family would become such significant players in the How To Get Away With Murder universe.

Souza was a regular through the first five seasons of the series and a guest in season six, logging 78 episodes overall.

On the small screen, Souza most recently starred in the 2020 Chilean drama El Presidente and the ABC sitcom Home Economics, which was canceled in 2023 after three seasons.

As of the fall of 2023, Souza has an upcoming title, Like It Used to Be, also starring Gina Rodriguez, that’s in pre-production. So, more Karla Souza is coming to a screen near you soon!

Charlie Weber – Frank Delfino

Frank Delfino was perhaps the most mysterious of all the characters in a series filled with characters harboring secrets.

Charlie Weber had a primary role throughout the series run. And before his turn on the drama, he had recurring roles on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Everwood, Underemployed, and 90210.

Since the end of the series, Weber starred in several television films, like Christmas Bedtime Stories and Mystery Island, along with the 2023 feature films Panama, The Locksmith, and Soul Mates.

Weber has certainly been keeping busy over the years!

Liza Weil – Bonnie Winterbottom

Liza Weil has the great fortune of having two very memorable performances under her belt.

Gilmore Girls enthusiasts will remember her as Paris Gellar, Rory Gilmore’s friend, during the run of the popular comedy-drama of the 2000s. And she even reprised her role during the 2016 miniseries Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.

But Paris Gellar and Bonnie Winterbottom, Annalise’s forever frenemy, aren’t the only roles fans know her from. She had a pivotal role as Amanda Tanner on Scandal Season 1 and currently has a heavily recurring role on FOX hit The Cleaning Lady.

Weil’s illustrious career also includes a bevy of movies, including the recent release The Passengers, alongside Kyle Gallner.

Conrad Ricamora – Oliver Hampton

The other half of ‘Coliver’ was Oliver Hampton, who joined the series as a recurring player throughout the first two seasons and parlayed that into a central role during the final four seasons.

Oliver was a groundbreaking character and one of the biggest fan favorites throughout the series, who not only liked watching the development of his and Connor’s relationship but also Oliver’s journey over the years.

An accomplished stage actor, while the series was airing and after it ended, Ricamora had roles in The King and I on Broadway and can currently be seen in Here Lies Love.

Coming up, Ricamora will be a part of the Hulu series How To Die Alone, a comedy series headlined by Natasha Rothwell.

A mainstay for six seasons, which nowadays is an awe-inspiring feat, it’s a show that took it’s audience by storm every Thursday.

It was bold, scary, and intense. Above all else, it was entertaining.

We’re taking a trip down memory lane and looking at some of the best moments throughout the series ninety episode run.

Best Character

This goes without saying when you have a megawatt movie star like Viola Davis at the helm of the ship.

Viola poured her heart and soul into Annalise Keating and allowed us to emphasize with this flawed character one second and be mad at her the next.

Annalise was complicated. You could never firmly put her in the bad column or the good column because she didn’t live her life that way. She made poor decisions at times and great decisions at other times, but even when she made her worse choices, she was still the smartest person in the room.

She was ambitious and ruthless while also showing kindness and regards to those closest to her. So many characters are one-dimensional nowadays and rarely exist in a gray area. Annalise was the personification of gray and will go down in history as one of the most significant television characters of all time.

Biggest Twist

The biggest twist of the series was also one of the saddest moments of the series. Perhaps the most tragic moment for some, depending upon how much you connected with this character.

From the beginning, Wes was the main male lead of the series. His relationship with Annalise was up and down and burdened by lies and deceit, but it was arguably the central relationship of the series.

So deciding to kill Wes during How To Get Away With Murder Season 3 was a truly shocking turn of events. All signs pointed to Nate being the dead body, as it got teased all season, but we were thrown for a loop when Wes’s body appeared on that slab.

As a character, Wes wasn’t always well-liked, but he was a crucial piece of the puzzle. And while the show soldiered on from there, and never missed a beat, his death always remained the most shocking death the show threw our way.

Best Friendship

This one is hard because there were a lot of friendships throughout the series that were special. But taking the whole journey into account, the best bond had to be the one formed between Annalise and Tegan during the later seasons.

They weren’t always on the same page, but they cared for one another, and during some of the darkest moments of her life, there was one person who never wavered.

In the end, we got robbed of potentially seeing the two navigate a romantic relationship, but I think it’s safe to assume they remained close confidants until the very end.

Best Romantic Relationship

There were many hookups and relationships throughout the series, but there was only one relationship that could be considered epic. And it was the pairing of Connor and Oliver.

Their relationship started under not-so-honest circumstances, but the two fell hard and fast for one another and never looked back. Through the ups and downs, they always leaned on their love for one another.

Connor grew exponentially over the years, and a lot of that growing up had to do with Oliver. We don’t know what happened during those years Connor spent in prison, but we do know that the two found their way back to each other.

And of course, they did. That’s true love.

Best Quote

Is this one even up for debate?

Not only is this quote the best of the series, but it’s a quote for the ages. Everything about the scene is perfect, from the nonchalance with which Annalise confronts her lying husband and the look on Sam’s face when the evidence got thrust in his face.

It’s still shocking all this time later.

Best Season Long Mystery

While DA Ron Miller’s death was a pretty good mystery, as was the whole of How To Get Away With Murder Season 2 and ‘Who Shot Annalise?’. The first season mystery was the first and the best one of them all.

The series was never better than in those early days, setting us up for Sam’s murder and the subsequent coverup. Back then, we were getting used to the format of the episodes, and as we got small pieces each week and formed our theories.

Everything about Sam’s death was a shock, and the twists never stopped coming.

The series continued to be a twisty, drama-filled dream, but it never reached the heights of the first mystery.

Best Villian

Picking a single villain is very hard. And calling them the "best" is even harder. 

The Castillo’s or the Governor would be the obvious choice, but there was someone else whose imprint was on the entire series. And the case of much of the pain.

Sam Keating was the real bad guy of the series. He was the embodiment of so much pain for Annalise, Frank, and Bonnie. None of that can get glossed over in the long run.

Time and time again, those around him told Gabriel that he was lucky Sam wasn’t a part of his life, and boy was that the truth.

Even though he was only alive during How To Get Away With Murder Season 1, his impact lasted throughout the entire run. That’s some evil energy.

Best Case of the Week

Nathaniel Lahey Senior’s case was more a case of the season than of the week, but it was by far the most compelling.

The case brought Annalise to Washington D.C. and the Supreme Court. Plus, we got the crossover of all crossovers when Annalise Keating and Olivia Pope went toe to toe.

The case was about justice and redemption, and it was Annalise at her absolute best. Putting in the work and delivering with the eyes of the world on her.

Annalise went up against that big giant beast of a justice system and slew the dragon.

How to Get Away with Murder Season 6 Episode 15 featured lots of death, trauma, and moving pieces to bring six seasons of thrills to a conclusion. 

While Frank's fate was sealed the moment he shot the Governor, the fate of his love interest, Bonnie, was left up in the air. 

If you watch How to Get Away with Murder online, you know she went into shock as Annalise tried to get her help. 

And while Bonnie was not seen in the future at Annalise's funeral, fans wondered whether she survived the shooting. 

TV Line interviewed series creator, Pete Nowalk, and he has revealed that Bonnie is definitely dead.

This means that both Bonnie and Frank died beside one another. 

They had tragic backstories, but Frank's death seemed like it was all about bringing the character full circle for viewers. 

"I felt like there had to be tragedy that resulted from all of the tragedy in the show If everyone was going to walk away with their life, then it wasn’t at all going to feel like a good story or a true story," Nowalk told the outlet. 

"And then it really started with Frank. I understood that he would sacrifice himself for Annalise. Even 10 years ago, I think he would have sacrificed himself for Annalise, and that was really because of his guilt that he was responsible for the death of her child."

"I don’t think he could ever forgive himself for that, and if he had the opportunity to save Annalise or do right by her, he was going to do whatever he had to do, even if that meant going on a suicide mission."

The decision to kill off Bonnie, however, was the topic of much debate among the writers, with Nowalk admitting that "most people were really on the side of giving her a more triumphant ending, as something that allowed her some happiness."

"There’s really no character who has suffered more than her on the show and had such a bleak life," he continued. 

"But I just felt like that wasn’t true, either. It’s not like everyone gets what they deserve in life, and I didn’t want that to also happen on the show."

"I wanted there to be some tragedy. And the only thing that made me feel OK about it was that her and Frank did really love each other, and it was like Romeo and Juliet for them to die together."

Indeed, it did feel very Romeo and Juliet, and we don't think Bonnie would have wanted to live in a world without Frank Delfino. 

All we can do is hope they are at peace wherever they may be.

We've reached the end of an era. And How to Get Away with Murder Season 6 Episode 15 gave us a finale to remember.

But will it be remembered for the right reasons?

Only you can decide how you feel about the finale, but I think we can all agree that they packed A LOT into the final hour of this iconic series.

For as big a focus as the trial was throughout the final set of episodes, it sure did get wrapped up quickly.

Nate's master plan to get Jorge to flip on the Governor was a massive failure, and the Governor's time on the stand only landed a minor win for Annalise's trial.

The Hannah recording was able to insert some doubt about the Governor's claim that she had absolutely no idea who Hannah and Xavier were, but it wasn't going to be enough to get the job done.

She needed more, and she got more from both Nate's testimony and her persuasive closing argument.

Nate finally decided to stop playing the martyr and acting like he was above it all. And all I can say is it's about time.

Nate's constant 'I'm better than everyone' act was getting old, and his decision to step up and tell the truth on the stand was his way of taking responsibility for his role in everything that has happened over the years.

When you think about it, he doesn't owe Annalise anything. Their relationship has been fraught with deception and pain, but he told the truth for himself. Nate's been a frustrating character for a long while, but at least he can sleep at night knowing he wasn't a pawn for the FBI.

Michaela and Connor can't relate.

Considering how much of this series revolved around those two, they were barely a factor in the finale.

While Connor was willing to lie on the stand, he's always accepted the fact that he deserves to be punished in some way. It would be somewhat admirable if he took the Nate route and told the truth.

But he didn't, and he was headed to jail, even after Oliver's hail mary.

Connor and Oliver's relationship has been a mess, like most everyone's relationships on this show. But to see Connor break Oliver's heart as a means of saving him was equal parts sad and confusing.

Connor: Oliver, thank you. Now I know how to love.

Oliver made some threats, but did anyone think he wasn't going to wait for Connor? He would have waited forever, but Connor deciding to let him go free didn't feel right or even necessary.

Perhaps it was a way to show Connor being selfless, which is something he's often struggled with, but I'm not sure it landed how it was intended.

Michaela stayed true to Michaela and had zero regrets about the things she did. Michaela's life has hard, and she struggled for a long time. She wasn't going to throw away years and years of hard work when she didn't have to.

You can understand her plight, but it still doesn't make perjury and slandering a woman who didn't commit a single murder okay.

In the end, Michaela walked away from the trial alone. And she had no one to blame but herself. She put her ambition above her humanity.

But back to the trial, Annalise won, and that was always the way that case should have gone. Annalise's closing argument was a long time coming and a chance for her to be free finally.

She freely admitted to her shortcomings while also highlighting her strengths. She's a warrior, survivor, and a teacher. She's never been a murderer.

Having the hour start with the gunshots ringing out was typical How To Get Away With Murder. As was the red herrings sprinkled throughout here (and the season for that matter).

We seemed poised to watch someone unload on Annalise outside of the courtroom, and see her pass away mere moments after winning the biggest trial of her life. But things went a different and tragic way.

I should have seen Frank and Bonnie's story ending this way, given the trajectory of the relationship during How To Get Away With Murder Season 6.

They had FINALLY reached a place of mutual understanding and love, and they both seemed like they were right at the door of happiness. But it all came crashing down when Bonnie told Frank about his parents.

Bonnie thought she was doing the right thing by telling Frank the truth. And can you be mad at her for that?

She knows Frank better than anyone, and while she had to know it would affect Frank in a slew of different ways, she never could have prepared herself for Frank's fast downward spiral.

One sharp criticism I have of the finale is how little time we got to sit with everyone's emotions. The biggest thing to ever happen to Frank got about three total minutes of screentime. And he only got a very brief goodbye with both Annalise and Bonnie.

This overarching theme of people trying to please Annalise has never been more true than in Frank and Bonnie's case. They've lived a considerable part of their adult lives trying to make Annalise happy. It's cost them their happiness, and in the end, it cost them their lives.

As soon as Frank showed up in the crowd outside the courtroom, it was like the air left my body. I knew he was going to die, and as Bonnie got closer and closer to him, it just felt like tragedy was moments away.

Killing the Governor in broad daylight was a suicide mission, and Frank knew that. But he had to make things right for Annalise.

He literally laid dying on the pavement, using his final words to make sure that Annalise knew he would die, making sure that he did right by her.

Bonnie's subsequent death was the real shocker, but Bonnie would have never been able to live without Frank. That doesn't mean there's anything bittersweet about them dying together. They were on the cusp of something neither one of them had ever honestly had the opportunity to experience.

And it's tragically ironic that one truth ended it all for them.

I almost wish the episode had ended right there because the twist at the end felt like we were being deceived and satisfied simultaneously.

Annalise Keating was indeed dead, but it wasn't the Annalise of the present day.

It wasn't all that shocking if we're honest, and it's sure to go down as a controversial decision on the part of the show.

Who killed Annalise was the driving force of the season, and the answer is presumably no one. Unless I missed something, she wasn't killed, but instead, she just died, after living out the rest of her days with love affairs and mentorship.

The decision to bring in literal Wes but have him be Christopher Castillo was a move I did not see coming. And frankly, it's hard to say whether it was a beautiful full-circle moment or a cheap one.

Knowing that Annalise was able to forge a bond with Wes's son and the child he helped bring into this world is an incredibly touching thing to think about.

Annalise loved Wes and always felt as if she had failed him. It's beautiful to think she took his son in and helped shape him into the man he became (which from what little we saw was most likely good).

But it also felt like one final gotcha moment.

Though the throwback to How To Get Away With Murder Season 1 with Wes's son bike riding onto campus and walking into THAT classroom as a teacher left me in absolute tears.

In the end, we can only hope that Annalise found some form of peace. That she was at ease with the woman she was, and that she was able to find happiness within herself.

It's what she always deserved.

Everything Else You Need To Know

• Seeing everyone older was a nice touch, but it really set in how many people were missing from that funeral, and never got to live a full life.

• Michaela becoming a judge was what she always set out to do, and was the way her story was always supposed to end.

• That Connor and Oliver reunited was expected and excellent. A love like theirs was meant to survive.

• I like to imagine Laurel and Annalise became close in the end and leaned on each other. They always had a deeper bond that got strengthened through Christopher, and it's nice to think that got rekindled.

• We missed out on seeing Tegan and Annalise try to be in a relationship. We got robbed!

• By my count, we got the answers to all the relevant questions. Was there anything we didn't get answered?

Never seeing another episode of this series doesn't feel real yet. It's been a staple for the past six years, and it will live on as one of the wildest nighttime dramas we've ever had.

Buoyed by the force of nature that is Viola Davis, this was an incredible series to cover, and I'm personally going to miss it tremendously.

Frank kidnaps Hannah’s lawyer and has him go through her safety deposit box.

Jorge gets on the stand at Annalise’s trial and says that he never worked with the Governor. Later, the Governor takes the stand, and Annalise plays a recording Frank recovered from Hannah that had a conversation between Hannah and Xavier discussing the Governor’s role in Nate Sr.’s death.

The FBI offers Nate twenty million dollars to make sure he testifies against Annalise.

Frank gives Gabriel a suitcase full of money and asks him not to testify against Annalise.

The FBI offers Connor a new plea deal with just probation. He later deduces that Oliver went to the FBI and planned to be a surprise witness in exchange for Connor’s deal.

On the stand, Nate calls out the FBI for trying to bribe him.

After closing arguments, Annalise is found not guilty. Outside the courtroom, Frank appears and shots the Governor dead. Bonnie tries to stop him, and she and Frank are both shot and killed.

A flashforward shows Annalise’s funeral, which is set in the distant future. Eve speaks, and Laurel, Connor, and Oliver are shown in the crowd, along with Laurel’s son, Christopher.

Christopher is shown to be a law professor at Middleton just like his mentor, Annalise.

How to Get Away with Murder Season 6 Episode 14 was the gift that kept on giving, and the perfect set-up to what is sure to be a riveting, can’t miss hour of the beloved series.

You guys better prepare yourselves now, because it’s obvious this thing is going to go out in a blaze of glory. 

Annalise’s trial has been looming over the back half of the final season, and things finally started rolling.

The lead up to the trail was brilliant, as we got Annalise’s voiceover walking us through what she would typically be telling her clients on the first day of trial. Except now, she was telling herself.

Annalise has tried insanely hard cases that she’s had no business winning, and she brought a case before the Supreme Court. But nothing could prepare you for her own murder trial.

Annalise: You’re Annalise damn Keating. You got this.

But as we were reminded multiple times, this is Annalise freaking Keating. She lost her lawyer on the first day and still swooped in with a killer opening statement, and a plan to break the very students she’s always set out to protect.

It’s crazy how unlikable Connor and Michaela have become so quickly.

Even when everyone was ranting and raving about Annalise and blaming her for every poor decision they ever made, they were still always on the same side. But that’s not the case anymore.

Connor and Michaela have accepted their fates, and they got up on the stand spewing lie after lie.

Sam’s death seems like ages ago, but the flashbacks were a good reminder of just how chaotic that night was. It spiraled out of control rather quickly, but in the end, everyone decided to cover up Sam's death.

Annalise wasn’t whispering in their ears. And she most certainly didn’t tell Wes to murder him.

It had to be torturous for Annalise to sit there and listen to the two of them just make up things. Then you add Laurel to the mix, and well, it was not looking good for Annalise at all.

Annalise was fighting back against Michaela and Connor with everything she had, but it was hard to see her winning any of those rounds. And Laurel’s testimony was liable to push things completely off the rails.

Laurel has been a frustrating character throughout the show. And her reappearance was met with a tepid reaction from me, as she was cleared deployed by Lanford to lie and lie some more.

The only one who could maybe get through to her was Frank due to their complicated past. After everything that happened between them, it felt almost wrong for Laurel to butter Frank up and tell him she missed him and what a great father figure he had been to Christopher.

Laurel did was she thought was best for herself and her son when she disappeared, and you can’t fault her for that. But she left a lot of people who cared about her behind, and she didn’t seem overly concerned about that.

Frank [to Laurel}: Don’t testify against Annalise. You owe me that.

It didn’t seem like Laurel was going to back out of her deal, but when she got on the stand she shocked the world by doing the right thing. Again, Annalise is far from innocent, but let us not pretend that she was sleeping with Wes and convinced him to kill Sam for her.

Even with Laurel flipping though, Annalise felt she needed to play her last remaining card; Hannah Keating.

After THAT shocking secret came out at the end of How To Get Away With Murder Season 6 Episode 13, you just knew Annalise was going to try to spin it in her favor.

By essentially blackmailing Hannah, she could get another witness on her side and bolster her defense that the Castillo’s and the governor were out to get her.

But because nothing ever goes according to plan, Hannah ended up very dead. And all preliminary signs point to Frank.

On the one hand, you can’t blame Bonnie for telling Frank the truth, because she loves him. Sure, his speech to her in the parking garage was god awful (pro tip; don’t start a conversation with the person you love by saying you also love someone else), but she didn’t want to lie to him anymore.

If they’re going to make an honest go of it than she should be telling him the truth as he did with her.

But this is Frank. He’s reactionary and emotional. Finding out something like that would send any sane person spiraling. And again, this is Frank.

We don’t know for sure that Frank pulled that trigger, but he has to be the number one suspect at this point.

Now without Hannah, where does that leave Annalise?

It appears Nate is trying to inadvertently help her by getting Jorge to flip on the governor, but who knows. He’s a complete wildcard, and if his master plan doesn’t work, he could easily get up on the stand and be another sheep for the FBI.

But maybe none of this matters, because Annalise is supposedly dead.

The #WhoKilledAnnalise subplot has largely been ignored as of late because there’s been so much going on. But there’s only one hour left, so we have to get some resolution on that front.

Does she even make it to the end of the trial? Does she fake her death for real and spend the rest of her days on a tropical island?

Whatever happens next, it’s been one hell of a good time these past six years. And I’m not ready for it to end.

Everything Else You Need To Know

• Both Michaela and Laurel negotiating probation and Connor not is pretty tragic. Of all the Keating 5, they were always the two who looked out for themselves the most.

• Gabriel came back for one last sad moment with Michaela, and it would have meant more if we’d seen anything from them over the last few episodes. I’d started to forget they were even a couple at one point.

• Tegan and Annalise have always had tremendous chemistry, and trying to showcase Tegan’s feelings now is disappointing. We could have had more time with them exploring something, and we were robbed of that.

• Christopher really grew up!

• One last time because I have to, WHERE IS WES? There are so many things to cover in the finale, and the Wes question better be more than just a footnote.

There’s been ups and downs throughout the six seasons, but overall this show has been high quality, relevant television that brought a lot of entertainment and conversation into our homes. Are you ready to say goodbye?

AUSA Lennox requests that Tegan be removed as Annalise’s counsel, as Laurel takes the stand against Annalise. Ultimately, Annalise accepts the request and becomes her own counsel.

Hannah agrees to testify but wants Annalise to sign an NDA. If Annalise tells anyone about Frank, she will be liable for 100 million dollars. She eventually decides to sign the deal, but Hannah comes back with another request that should Annalise win, she has to admit she killed Sam.

Nate goes to Jorge in prison and tells him he should testify against the governor.

On the stand, Michaela tells the court that Annalise ordered Wes to kill Sam because they were sleeping together. When Connor gets on the stand, he corroborates what Michaela said.

Frank meets with Laurel but is unable to convince her to not testify against Annalise. Later, she and Frank meet with her and beg her not to testify.

While on the stand, Laurel ultimately admits that she’s been lying and Lanford told her what to say on the stand.

Annalise decides to sign Hannah’s deal.

After Xavier’s body us found, Nate goes back to Jorge alleging that the governor was behind his death, and again asks him to testify against her.

Hannah is found dead, allegedly by suicide, and it is revealed Bonnie told Frank about Sam and Hannah being his parents.
