When it comes to TV, nothing grips us quite like a well-crafted psychopath.

From cold-blooded manipulators to charismatic killers, these unforgettable characters worm their way into our nightmares — and sometimes our hearts — by showing us just how terrifying the human mind can be.

Whether they’re charming, ruthless, or hiding their darkness behind a perfect smile, these villains kept us glued to the screen, wondering what horrifying move they’ll make next.

So, let’s dive into the chilling world of TV’s most unforgettable psychopaths.

And here’s a word of warning: you might want to leave the lights on for this one!

Leland Townsend (Evil)

(Elizabeth Fisher/Paramount+)

Evil’s Leland Townsend is the kind of psychopath who gets his kicks from playing with people’s darkest instincts. He’s not your typical knife-wielding villain — oh no, Leland’s much sneakier.

He shows up as a charming, harmless guy, but underneath? He’s a full-blown vessel of pure evil.

One of his creepiest moments comes when he casually convinces a young boy to embrace his violent tendencies, all while keeping that unnerving smile plastered on his face.

But Leland doesn’t stop there — he’s got his sights set on Kristen’s mom, Sheryl. He seduces her and slowly pulls her into his twisted world, using her as a pawn in his larger scheme to torment Kristen and dismantle her family.

(Elizabeth Fisher/Paramount+)

The way he plays Sheryl, exploiting her insecurities and isolating her from her daughter, is classic Leland.

He’s a master at turning people against each other while maintaining the appearance of a caring, concerned partner.

What makes Leland so terrifying is his ability to make evil look almost reasonable. He doesn’t need a weapon — he’s got words, manipulation, and charisma to cause destruction.

Leland’s real power is psychological, and he uses it to wreck lives, especially Kristen’s, one twisted move at a time.

Lucy Butler (Millennium)

Lucy Butler
(Fox/Screenshot)

Lucy Butler is one of the most underrated TV psychopaths ever. Her obsession with Frank Black on Millennium goes far beyond mere torment — she’s determined to break him.

Testing his morality and pulling him into the darkness, Lucy doesn’t just kill — she corrupts. Her psychological torment warps reality, leaving her victims trapped in a nightmare, especially Frank.

Whether she’s posing as a grieving mother or shifting into a sinister form, Lucy’s blend of manipulation and supernatural menace makes her unforgettable.

In one of Butler’s most brutal moments, she murders Lt. Bob Bletcher in Frank Black’s own home. What makes this scene particularly chilling is the way she first appears as an unassuming woman, standing calmly at the top of the stairs.

As Bletcher approaches, she suddenly transforms, taking on a demonic form that leaves him paralyzed with fear before finally killing him shortly thereafter.

Lucy isn’t your typical psychopath. Instead, she’s a master manipulator and shapeshifter, slipping between seductive charm and pure evil with ease. She doesn’t just bring horror — she is the horror that lingers long after she’s off-screen.

Jerome Valeska (Gotham)

Jerome Valeska
(Fox/Screenshot)

Jerome Valeska made his unforgettable debut on Gotham Season 1, and from the moment he stepped on screen, it was clear we were dealing with a special kind of psychopath.

Played with chaotic brilliance by Cameron Monaghan, Jerome first appeared as a seemingly harmless circus worker.

But when he revealed his true nature — after murdering his mother, no less — the transformation from an innocent facade to a chilling, gleeful maniac was jaw-dropping. That creepy grin and maniacal laugh? Instant classic.

Jerome’s psychopathic tendencies were rooted in his love for chaos and destruction. He thrived on creating disorder and fear, often toying with his victims as if life itself were a twisted game.

Unlike some villains with grand schemes or personal vendettas, Jerome simply enjoyed watching the world burn (which is why everyone thought he was the Joker).

His unpredictability made him all the more terrifying, as he could switch from a calm conversation to violent hysteria in the blink of an eye.

Jerome Valeska
(Fox/Screenshot)

His penchant for violence wasn’t driven by logic or even personal gain — it was pure entertainment for him. His psychopathy was raw, untamed, and dangerous, making him one of Gotham’s most electrifying villains.

His first major act of psychopathy was orchestrating an escape from Arkham Asylum and then going on a killing spree just for the thrill of it.

Jerome lived for the shock value, loving the fear and confusion he could evoke in others.

And it wasn’t just about killing — he had a flair for theatrics, whether hijacking a live broadcast to terrorize Gotham or leading a cult of followers who worshiped his madness.

Jerome embodied the chaotic, anarchic side of the Joker archetype. He wasn’t a master planner; he was a ticking time bomb, always ready to explode in ways no one could predict.

Villanelle (Killing Eve)

Villanelle Praying in The Bathroom - Killing Eve Season 4 Episode 1
(Anika Molnar/BBCA)

Killing Eve’s Villanelle is the kind of psychopath who makes murder look like an art form.

With her killer fashion sense and an even deadlier grin, she moves through life with a chilling detachment from human life.

Who else can kill a man with a poisoned hairpin while still looking like she’s ready for a night out?

Her charm is part of what makes her so terrifying. Not only does Villanelle kill, she enjoys it, like a game where she’s always in control.

Her playful psychopathy is on full display in her “relationship” with Eve, who she toys with like a cat batting around a mouse.

She can go from flirting to stabbing in the blink of an eye, and her obsession with Eve adds an extra layer of craziness. Even her handler isn’t safe from her whims — she’s equally likely to blow him a kiss or blow him away.

Hannibal Lecter (Hannibal)

Hannibal
(NBC Universal Media)

Can you imagine if Hannibal Lecter hosted Gordon Ramsay for dinner? Would Ramsay marvel at the “bold flavors” or call it a culinary disaster, unknowingly signing his death warrant?

And would Hannibal reveal his secret ingredient? Spoiler: it’s human flesh.

Hannibal is the most elegant psychopath to ever grace the screen — a refined psychiatrist, gourmet chef, and cold-blooded predator. His victims? Often served up as the main course at his lavish dinner parties.

Guests sip fine wine and savor dishes, completely unaware that their entrée was once someone’s neighbor.

One of Hannibal’s most chilling moments was when he served Abel Gideon his own leg, perfectly cooked and plated (on a lotus leaf!), all while maintaining his signature icy composure.

Hannibal
(NBC/Screenshot)

It’s not just the act that’s horrifying; it’s the way he turns murder into an art form, with his clinical detachment making the scene even more disturbing.

What makes Hannibal truly terrifying is his ability to blend in. As a respected psychiatrist, he manipulates the people around him, turning trust into a deadly trap.

With a charming smile and a beautifully crafted meal, Hannibal turns dinner into a nightmare — securing his place as one of TV’s most unforgettable psychopaths.

Joffrey Baratheon (Game of Thrones)

Joffrey Baratheon
(HBO)

Joffrey Baratheon from Game of Thrones is the ultimate TV psychopath, a king whose cruelty knows no bounds. Drunk on power and with an unchecked thirst for violence, Joffrey’s reign is one of sadism and terror.

From the moment he gleefully orders Ned Stark’s execution, it’s clear Joffrey is not just ruthless — he’s psychopathic.

He takes pleasure in the suffering of others, especially when forcing Sansa Stark to stare at her father’s severed head on a spike, smiling as she’s emotionally shattered.

But Joffrey’s cruelty isn’t just limited to political enemies. His twisted mind revels in tormenting for sheer entertainment, particularly when he tortures prostitutes for fun.

Joffrey Baratheon
(HBO)

In one of his most disturbing moments, Joffrey orders the execution of Ros, a young woman with a crossbow, grinning as she dies in agony, her body left as a grisly display.

This scene is the perfect example of Joffrey’s complete lack of empathy and his delight in cruelty. He doesn’t just want power — he wants to dominate and humiliate everyone around him.

Joffrey’s psychopathy isn’t about calculated power moves; it’s about the pleasure he gets from causing pain.

Watching Joffrey’s descent into darker, more sadistic acts makes him a character who embodies everything terrifying about unchecked power in the hands of a true psychopath.

Brady Hartsfield (Mr. Mercedes)

Brady Hartsfield
(AT&T Audience Network)

Brady Hartsfield from Mr. Mercedes may look like your friendly neighborhood ice cream man, but behind that innocent smile lies a dangerous and disturbed mind.

Brady uses his seemingly harmless job to get close to his victims, especially retired detective Bill Hodges, all while masking his dark obsessions.

His ability to blend into the everyday world while stalking Hodges is chilling and it makes his twisted cat-and-mouse game even more unsettling.

Brady’s real talent lies in his tech-savvy genius. He uses technology to hack into Hodges’ devices, leaving taunting messages and psychological traps that push the detective to the edge.

What makes Brady truly terrifying is how he enjoys breaking his victims mentally; he’s not just looking for blood; he wants to control them.

Brady Hartsfield
(Peacock/Screenshot)

Another layer to Brady’s disturbing character is his complicated and unhealthy relationship with his mother, which adds depth to his psychopathy.

It’s this twisted family dynamic that further shapes Brady’s dark persona, making him even more dangerous.

The contrast between Brady’s friendly, harmless appearance and the evil lurking beneath is what makes him stand out. He’s a manipulator and killer who turns ordinary moments into nightmares.

Be careful the next time you hear that catchy jingle, you might be getting more than just a tasty treat.

Norman Bates (Bates Motel)

Norman - Bates Motel Season 5 Episode 8
(Cate Cameron/A&E Networks LLC)

Norman Bates may seem like the quiet, awkward kid next door, but underneath that facade lies one scary dude.

His deeply dysfunctional relationship with his mother, Norma, mixed with his pre-existing mental illness, is the perfect storm that drives Norman into a full psychotic breakdown on Bates Motel.

From the start, it’s clear Norman has serious issues, and Norma, despite knowing something is wrong, never seeks professional help for him.

Instead, her possessiveness and control only tighten the grip on Norman’s fragile mind, leading him to dissociate and take on her personality.

As Norman’s mental state deteriorates, he begins killing women he believes are coming between him and his mother, like his teacher, Blaire Watson, and his high school crush, Bradley Martin.

In Norman’s twisted mind, “Mother” is the one committing these murders to protect him from “bad” influences, but it’s really Norman in a delusional state, completely unaware of his actions.

A New Discovery - Bates Motel
(Cate Cameron/A&E Networks)

Norman’s final break with reality comes when Norma starts a relationship with Sheriff Alex Romero. Unable to cope with the thought of sharing his mother, Norman orchestrates a murder-suicide by tampering with the gas in their home.

While Norma dies, Norman survives — and from that moment, his transformation is complete. He keeps his mother’s corpse in the house, dresses in her clothes, and continues his killing spree, convinced “Mother” is still in control.

Even Romero, who loved Norma, becomes one of Norman’s victims, proving that no one could come between him and his “Mother.”

Norman Bates is a tragic mix of obsession and delusion, making his descent into madness both heartbreaking and terrifying.

But beneath that calm exterior is someone far more dangerous. His obsessive, controlling nature emerges as he stalks those he fixates on and eliminates anyone who gets in the way of his “perfect” relationships.

One of Joe’s most chilling moments comes when he murders his girlfriend, Beck, after she discovers his hidden box of trophies from past victims.

In Joe’s warped mind, he sees this murder not as an act of violence but as something necessary to protect their love.

His ability to justify these heinous acts to himself, convincing himself he’s doing it out of love or protection, makes Joe especially unsettling.

Nurse Ratched (Ratched)

Mildred is Nice - Ratched Season 1 Episode 7
(Netflix)

Nurse Mildred Ratched is the epitome of a cold, calculating psychopath who hides her dark nature behind the mask of a caregiver.

In her pursuit of power, she manipulates, tortures, and kills anyone who threatens her control, all while maintaining a veneer of compassion.

Her most disturbing actions often come under the guise of treatment — whether it’s forcing a lobotomy on an innocent patient or using electroshock therapy as a method of punishment rather than healing.

What makes her truly terrifying is her ability to rationalize her cruel actions as “helping” her patients. She doesn’t see herself as a villain but rather as someone who is justified in her methods, no matter how brutal.

Her icy calm and meticulous approach to manipulation make her especially chilling — she can smile while planning someone’s destruction.

Mildred’s quiet, methodical cruelty is a chilling reminder that sometimes the most terrifying monsters are the ones who hide behind a mask of care and authority.

Bev Keane (Midnight Mass)

Bev Keane
(EIKE SCHROTER/NETFLIX © 2021)

Bev Keane from Midnight Mass is a walking nightmare wrapped in a church dress. No fangs, no claws –her weapon is blind faith, and she wields it with terrifying precision.

Bev is a cold, calculating force hiding behind a pious smile, twisting scripture into a tool of control.

Whether she’s casually suggesting mass poisonings or standing smugly as chaos erupts, Bev’s moral superiority makes her even more dangerous. She doesn’t flinch because, in her twisted mind, she’s not the villain — she’s the savior.

The scariest part? Bev truly believes she’s on a divine mission, which means she’s capable of anything. While others on Crockett Island face supernatural horrors, Bev sees herself as the righteous judge, jury, and executioner.

Her fanaticism knows no bounds. When Bev condemns you, it’s with the certainty that she’s delivering you to salvation – even if that salvation comes in the form of death.

She’ll smile sweetly as she leads you to your doom, which makes her all the more terrifying. Bev Keane isn’t just preaching the end — she is the end.

James March (American Horror Story: Hotel)

James March
(FX/Screenshot)

James March, one of American Horror Story: Hotel’s most terrifying characters, is the perfect mix of charm and sadism.

A serial killer with a love for the macabre, March designed the Hotel Cortez to be his personal murder playground, complete with secret passageways and hidden rooms where he could trap and torture his unsuspecting guests.

But it’s not just the elaborate murders that define March — it’s the gleeful way he goes about them. He doesn’t just kill; he turns each murder into an art form, taking pride in the intricacy of his methods.

What makes March truly horrifying is the way he balances charisma with pure evil. Played masterfully by Evan Peters, March exudes a twisted kind of charm, delighting in his own wickedness.

One of his most chilling moments comes when he hosts a dinner party for some of history’s most infamous serial killers, including John Wayne Gacy and Aileen Wuornos.

James March
(FX/Screenshot)

This nightmarish gathering sees March casually swapping murder stories over dinner as if discussing the weather, his nonchalant attitude making the scene all the more disturbing.

Whether he’s tormenting guests or reminiscing about his kills, March’s sophistication and savagery blend into one of TV’s most unforgettable and terrifying characters. His evil lingers long after you leave the Hotel Cortez.

Homelander from The Boys is the ultimate wolf in sheep’s clothing — America’s golden superhero with the heart of a psychopath.

Behind that perfect smile and patriotic suit lies a volatile, power-hungry monster who doesn’t just demand respect — he expects worship.

His sense of entitlement is terrifying, and when things don’t go his way, he doesn’t throw a tantrum obliterating anyone in his path.

Whether he’s casually murdering innocents with his laser vision or threatening his own team with a smirk, Homelander thrives on control and destruction.

Homelander
(Prime Video/Screenshot)

What makes him truly frightening isn’t just his god-like powers but his complete lack of empathy. He doesn’t see people as lives worth protecting; to him, they’re disposable tools or obstacles to crush.

His charming speeches and faux heroism only mask the true predator lurking underneath, waiting for the perfect moment to unleash his brutality.

Homelander doesn’t just kill — he dominates, manipulates, and terrorizes with gleeful ease, leaving a trail of destruction in his wake.

And the worst part? He believes he’s always right, making him not just dangerous but unstoppable. With Homelander, the real terror is knowing he can do whatever he wants — and no one can stop him.

Her calm, almost flirtatious demeanor when discussing murder is enough to send chills down your spine. One minute she’s flashing a charming smile, and the next, she’s hinting at the dark, twisted thoughts lurking beneath the surface.

Alice’s obsession with Luther and the mind games she plays make her especially dangerous. She’s not just a killer; she’s a master manipulator who finds joy in every ounce of chaos she creates.

With Alice, it’s never just about the murder — it’s about control, power, and enjoying the game. You never know what she’s going to do next, but one thing’s for sure: she’s always ten steps ahead, and that’s what makes her so terrifying.

The worst part? Kilgrave doesn’t see himself as the bad guy. He strolls through life with a twisted sense of entitlement, convinced the world — and everyone in it — exists for his amusement.

Whether he orders someone to leap off a building or torments Jessica with mind games, his nonchalant attitude only makes him more terrifying.

Kilgrave’s charm is as dangerous as his power. He can make you feel safe one second, then rip away your free will the next, all while acting like he’s doing you a favor.

His total lack of remorse, combined with his god-like control, makes every encounter a chilling reminder that with Kilgrave, there’s no escape.

The Trinity Killer (Dexter)

Arthur Mitchell/The Trinity Killer
(Randy Tepper/©Showtime)

Arthur Mitchell, better known as the Trinity Killer on Dexter, is the kind of psychopath that gets under your skin and stays there.

This guy isn’t your typical serial killer — he’s a chilling blend of calculated ritual and terrifying unpredictability.

With his twisted, meticulous killing cycle tied to traumatic events from his childhood, Trinity isn’t just hunting victims — he’s reliving his pain over and over again, dragging others into his nightmare.

One of the most terrifying aspects of the Trinity Killer is his ability to balance two lives: as a loving father and charitable community leader while secretly being a cold-blooded murderer.

But don’t let the nice guy act fool you. This is a man who ritualistically murders to “cleanse” himself of his inner demons, each kill performed with almost religious precision.

Arthur Mitchell
(Showtime/Screenshot)

His confrontation with Dexter is the stuff of nightmares — especially when Dexter realizes just how deeply disturbed Arthur really is.

Trinity’s calm, methodical demeanor makes his sudden, brutal violence even more horrifying.

And unlike other killers Dexter encounters, Trinity leaves a lasting scar, both on the show and on the audience. His blend of charm, control, and sheer madness makes the Trinity Killer one of TV’s most bone-chilling psychopaths.

One of his most chilling moves? Manipulating meek Lester Nygaard into killing his own wife, all with a devilish whisper and that unsettling smile.

Malvo never needs brute force; he plants the seeds of violence and sits back to watch the carnage unfold.

What makes him even scarier? He kills not because he has to but because he loves watching people crumble. Whether he’s tormenting FBI agents, obliterating crime families, or dropping philosophical bombs before his next kill, Malvo is a storm of destruction.

This is a psychopath who doesn’t just take lives — he dismantles them, piece by piece, with chilling delight.

Whether he’s staging betrayals or pulling strings behind the scenes, Ben doesn’t just outthink his enemies — he outmaneuvers them at every turn.

The Reaper – Criminal Minds

George Foyet
(CBS/Screenshot)

George Foyet, better known as The Reaper, is one of the most terrifying killers on Criminal Minds. Unlike many of the show’s “unsubs,” Foyet doesn’t just kill for satisfaction — he enjoys the game of it all.

His reign of terror began with a series of brutal murders, but it’s his relentless, personal vendetta against FBI Agent Aaron Hotchner that truly sets him apart.

Foyet manipulates, stalks, and tortures with chilling precision, and his ability to outsmart the FBI for so long makes him all the more dangerous.

One of Foyet’s most horrifying moments is when he fakes his own death, a twist that leaves everyone, including the FBI, believing he’s gone.

But the real nightmare begins when Foyet resurfaces and brutally attacks Hotchner’s family, culminating in one of the series’ most gut-wrenching episodes when he murders Hotchner’s wife, Haley, while forcing Hotch to listen on the phone.

Foyet’s cruel mind games and sadistic pleasure in watching his victims suffer make him not just a killer but a true embodiment of terror.

Negan (The Walking Dead)

Negan
(AMC)

Negan from The Walking Dead is the kind of psychopath who doesn’t just command fear — he revels in it. Armed with his trusty barbed-wire bat, Lucille, and a twisted sense of humor, Negan is all about power and control.

When he first saunters onto the scene, he makes sure everyone knows who’s boss by delivering one of the most gut-wrenching moments in TV history: brutally bashing in the heads of two fan-favorite characters.

His swagger, combined with his sadistic charm, makes him both terrifying and oddly captivating.

Negan doesn’t just kill — he delivers speeches, plays mind games, and somehow makes you laugh right before he commits unspeakable acts of violence. The worst part? He’s always smiling while doing it.

His whole persona is designed to break people mentally and physically, leaving them too scared to even think about rebelling.

He’s a master manipulator who can make you think you’re in control, all while tightening the noose around your neck.

Maggie vs. Negan Again - The Walking Dead: Dead City

There are a lot of devilish characters out there.

You know the ones. Those who have relished in the evil coursing throughout their souls and won’t apologize for it.

Some of the best characters of all time are the multi-layered villains we’ve loved to hate over the years.

But some characters are just simply eviler than others.

Here’s a look at some of the wickedest of them all.

Armand, Interview with the Vampire

Armand Sulks - IWTV S02E08 - And That's the End of It. There's Nothing Else - Interview with the Vampire Season 2 Episode 8
(Larry Horricks/AMC)

He used up every last bit of sympathy and empathy, and what have you in the season finale.

Related: Interview with the Vampire Season 2 Episode 8 Review: And That’s the End of It. There’s Nothing Else

He’s always been suspicious (especially if, like Daniel, you’ve never forgiven him for lying about being Rashid), but the true depths of his evil coming out at the back end of this season make him unforgivable — even for a vampire!

That’s how bad he is. Super hot, but bad.

James Ulster, Will Trent

Gloating - Will Trent Season 2 Episode 1
(Disney/Matthew Miller)

We really hope he is just messing with Will Trent and isn’t actually his bio dad.

Ulster is the serial killer who keeps on giving: he almost killed Angie and, even behind bars, somehow managed to turn a prison break into a power grab.

Worst of all, he continues to play with Will’s emotions and his hunger for family.

Princess Mary, My Lady Jane

Kate O'Flynn (Princess Mary)
(Jonathan Prime/Prime Video)

In this Tudor-era fantasy tale, the sister of King Edward believes the throne is hers when Edward is reported dead but is thwarted when his will names his cousin Lady Jane as the rightful heir.

Mary (aided by her evil accomplice/lover, Lord Seymour) rises to spectacular villainous heights as she schemes to rid England of Jane and all Ethians (shape-shifters).

Sir, Found

Sir Emerges from the Shadows- Tall - Found Season 1 Episode 12
(Steve Swisher/NBC)

Despite the fact that Mark-Paul Gosselaar plays him and he has a twinge of charisma, Sir is a true monster for what he did to Gabi and Lacey.

And it doesn’t end, as the nerve-wracking season finale showed; he’s selfish enough and sadistic enough to take out anyone who gets between him and Gabi.

Although the twists and turns may be surprising throughout the series, Sir’s terrifying nature is to be expected at this point.

Rosalind Dyer, The Rookie

A Serial Killer - The Rookie Season 2 Episode 10
(ABC)

Gone but not forgotten, Rosalind is one of, if not The Rookie’s, greatest villains, and that goes for both the character and the incredible actress who portrayed her.

Related: The Rookie Season 2 Episode 10 Review: The Dark Side

She wreaked total havoc, a brilliant serial killer who took pride in every kill and relished outsmarting and outplaying everyone at every turn.

The woman was cold-blooded, but with a smile, she happily made Nolan and Lucy’s lives a living hell.

The Cigarette Smoking Man, The X-Files

Smoking Cigarettes - The X-Files
(Fox)

Sometimes, evil doesn’t rant and rave and threaten unspeakable violence. Sometimes, it just sits back in a cloud of Marlboro fumes and quietly manipulates the world around you until you’re powerless to fight back.

The writers of The X Files never even revealed the Cancer Man’s real name and the mystery surrounding him like a haze of secondhand carcinogens makes him so terrifying.

Adding to the terror is the fact that a guy like him is operating within every powerful government in the world at this very moment.

Leland, Evil

Cheers - Evil S04E02 - Werewolf
(Elizabeth Fisher/Paramount+)

Forensic psychologists and Midwestern insurance adjusters aren’t the first to come to mind when we think of evil. But if there’s any character on Evil who embodies the show’s title, it’s Dr. Leland Townsend.

The guy is literally working for demons to bring about the antichrist. He’s using the eggs of his nemesis to create his own Rosemary’s Baby situation. Plus, he’s a master at pulling other people’s puppet strings.

Related: Evil Season 4 Episode 8 Review: How to Save a Life

Sometimes, the most sinister villains are the ones who convince others to commit evil acts on their behalf. With his skillful manipulations of his naive victims, Leland makes Charles Manson look like Charlie Brown.

Cersei Lannister, Game of Thrones

Cersei Awaits the War - Game of Thrones
(HBO)

Cersei repeatedly made a case for herself as the most evil of them all on a show with no shortage of villains.

In the very first episode of Game of Thrones, a kid becomes disabled as a result of Cersei’s incestuous affair with her brother, and by the end of the season, she’s (allegedly) spearheading the conspiracy to have her husband murdered.

Throughout the series, Cersei suffers mightily due to her misdeeds—the loss of several children, her infamous march of shame, etc.—but her misfortunes only seem to exacerbate her cruelty.

Hannibal, Hannibal

Hannibal looking smug - Hannibal Season 3 Episode 12
(NBC Universal Media)

When you look up “evil” in the dictionary, the definition should be accompanied by a photo of one of Hannibal Lecter’s many screen incarnations.

Fans of the franchise might never agree on which actor offered the most chilling portrayal of Thomas Harris’ liver-loving psychopath. However, for sheer terrifying intensity, it’s tough to beat Mads Mikkelsen’s depiction on Hannibal.

This villain will keep a smile on his face while he tells you what sort of wine he plans to pair with your pancreas. And nothing is more frightening than a charismatic sociopath.

Constance Langdon, American Horror Story

Jessica Lange as Constance
(Ray Mickshaw/FX)

Few actresses can pull off a sinister glare, as well as Jessica Lange, and few people are more evil than those who use their religious faith to justify their bigotry.

Constance is one of the most disturbing characters on this list, largely because most of us have had the misfortune of encountering someone like her.

She was a villain for the ages.

Christopher Pelant, Bones

Pelant
(Fox)

No list of villains would be complete without at least one evil tech genius.

As we enter the age of AI, deep fakes, and killer drones, it becomes more and more clear that the most evil deeds of the future will be committed not with knives and guns but with lines of code.

Related: Bones Creator Stuns Fans, Teases Revival

Even house arrest couldn’t stop Christopher Pelant from wiping out his enemies. And while some of his computer-aided misdeeds might have seemed outlandish when he debuted on Bones in 2011, today, they feel all too plausible.

Elias Voit, Criminal Minds: Evolution

Elias Voit Outside - Criminal Minds S17E04 Kingdom of the Blind - Criminal Minds: Evolution
(Michael Yarish /Paramount+)

The BAU spent the first season of Criminal Minds: Evolution hunting a criminal mastermind called Sicarius. They believe the man behind Sicarius is serial killer Elias Voit.

The BAU apprehended him in the first season, and he’s returned for the second season to help uncover the secrets behind Gold Star, a new threat. Voit nearly killed FBI Agent Rossi in the first season, leading Rossi to get PTSD in the second season.

Rossi and the rest of the team must stay on guard as they deal with the evil reincarnate, which leads them on wild goose chases and taunting their every move.

Homelander, The Boys

Homelander at God U - Gen V Season 1 Episode 8
(Prime Video (Screenshot))

Homelander is the definition of a supervillain.

He’s selfish, intense, unforgiving, and sadistic, and as the leader of an Avengers-level superhero team, that makes him the scariest person in The Boys universe.

Related: The Boys Season 4 Episode 7: The Insider

Homelander has a unique brand of evilness, and he wields his power in truly terrifying action whenever given the chance. He’s cemented himself as one of the greatest TV villains of all time.

Klaus, The Vampire Diaries and The Originals

Klaus Staring Off - The Originals
(The CW)

There were many, many bad guys throughout The Vampire Diaries run, and Klaus was simply the baddest of all.

In hindsight, there are many moments where Klaus showed his humanity, but there were also many moments along the way when he showed little mercy, often with a smile on his face.

Klaus may be a fan-favorite, but you can’t deny the ancient vampire was wicked when he wanted to be.

While some of TV's best characters could do a great job in the Oval Office, there are also characters that should never step foot in the White House.

Imagine a world where your most beloved television characters could run for president. Sounds like a great idea, right? Now, consider some of those characters actually being in office.

Part of what makes certain television characters so enticing is their flaws, but those flaws could translate badly in positions of power.

Some are hilariously incompetent, while others are downright dangerous and power-hungry. Either way, it's not the best mix.

While it would be hilarious to imagine some of these characters running the United States, some of our top picks are a real horror show when it comes to how they use their power and influence in their own respective universes.

Let's take a look at some of the worst presidential picks from our favorite shows!

Kendall Roy – Succession

Kendall on the Road - Succession Season 4 Episode 9
(Macall Polay/HBO)

Kendall Roy is one of many complex characters from Succession, but a few things are certain about him.

He's a deeply flawed character with substantial daddy issues and a yearning for power, as are all of his siblings.

But what truly sets Kendall apart is his substantial lack of empathy. While he might appear to be a great visionary with a few issues here and there, his unethical behavior, drug use, lack of a moral compass, and volatile personal life could get in the way of running a country.

Plus, let's not forget that he killed a guy. Or just left him to die. It depends on your perspective.

Joffrey Baratheon – Game of Thrones

King Joffrey with a Sword
(HBO)

There are few characters from any franchise that are hated quite as much as Joffrey. For this Game of Thrones character, the hate was well-deserved. Joffrey was an excellent example of an absolute sociopath in a position of political power.

Throughout his arc on the show, Joffrey displayed all of the traits of a dangerously deranged prince.

He was cruel, sadistic, and immature. He enjoyed using fear and punishment over diplomacy and justice, and he completely lacked regard for human life.

It's scary enough to think about what the world would look like if he were the last one standing on Game of Thrones, but quite terrifying to think about him launching his candidacy for president of the United States.

David – The Last of Us

Listening - The Last of Us Season 1 Episode 8
(Liane Hentscher/HBO)

David is well-known as one of the worst, most vile characters on The Last of Us. He's also a great example of what happens when dangerous people are put into positions of power.

David is a preacher who leads a group of survivors post-outbreak, using his manipulative tendencies to unite them under shared religious beliefs.

When food begins to run out, he convinces the group to engage in cannibalism.

He uses manipulation, the desperation of others, religious beliefs, and cruelty to secure his place as the group's leader. Imagine someone like that being president of an entire country. Scary stuff!

Hannibal Lecter – Hannibal

Hannibal looking smug - Hannibal Season 3 Episode 12
(NBC Universal Media)

Mads Mikkelsen absolutely kills the depiction of the famous cannibalistic psychiatrist in the television series Hannibal.

This character's quiet nature and quick thinking are what allow him to commit countless murders unchecked.

Those qualities could also be quite terrifying in a presidential leader. Hannibal Lecter uses psychology to his advantage in order to manipulate those around him to avoid suspicion.

If someone like Hannibal were in control of an entire country, he would delight in the veil of power and diplomacy that could cover up his heinous, people-eating habits.

Tedros – The Idol

Tedros Drugged Out - The Idol Season 1 Episode 5
(Eddy Chen/HBO)

The Idol may have been a major flop, but there's no denying how easy it is to hate Tedros, the show's antagonist, and how scary it would be to imagine as a president.

Tedros is extremely abusive, sleazy, creepy, and also happens to be a cult leader.

Those are not the best attributes for a presidential leader. He clearly had a thing for manipulating and abusing unwell young artists, but that wouldn't fly with the US as a whole.

All these traits, coupled with an incredible desire for fame and wealth, could prove disastrous for a nation with someone like Tedros in a position of power.

Joe Goldberg – YOU

Unhinged Joe -tall - YOU
(© 2023 Netflix, Inc.)

It's pretty obvious why Joe would make a terrible president. Being a serial killer isn't high on anyone's list of valuable assets for public office. Joe's tendency toward obsession and Machiavellian personality traits could bring an entire nation to destruction if he were in a position of power.

Joe lacks a moral compass, showing no remorse (except in some notable circumstances) for those that he stalks and kills under the deluded guise of love and a need to "protect."

YOU's leading man is also a pro at living a double life and is profoundly dishonest, which realistically could make it quite easy for him to campaign for president of the United States.

That's a scary thought.

Connor Roy – Succession

The Eldest Son - Succession Season 4 Episode 2
(Macall Polay/HBO)

We absolutely had to include the eldest Roy sibling in this list, mostly because he very seriously tried to run for president in Succession.

Connor is hilariously naive and aloof in the show, and his rich kid childhood has clearly done a number on his ability to look at his circumstances realistically.

Connor has a serious sense of entitlement and a need to be recognized. Whether that need is for his father to see him or the whole world to see him (or both) is unclear.

What is clear is that he really believed he could make it in the world of politics with absolutely no political knowledge or experience. Fortunately for the United States, his campaign was a major flop.

Michael Scott – The Office

The Devil Wears Prada - The Office
(NBC)

Michael Scott is the lovable and incredibly unprofessional regional manager at Dunder Mifflin's Scranton branch, and that is where he belongs. There are few entries on this list more unqualified to be president than Orville Tootenbacher himself.

Michael lacks professionalism, makes terrible decisions, and doesn't quite have the mental capacity to understand complex issues.

And, of course, he tends to create chaos on The Office through sheer ignorance and immaturity.

This makes for great television, but it does not make for a good presidential leader. However, he would make a hilarious one.

Octavia Blake - The 100

What are your top picks for people who must steer clear of the Oval Office?

Well, other than the people actually running, that is.

Drop your thoughts on characters who are totally unsuitable for the job below!

Mads Mikkelsen is speaking out about the possibility of revisiting Hannibal, eight years on from its cancellation. Get the details right here.

I think we can all agree that Hannibal is one of the shows most deserving of a revival. We recently named it one of the shows that had a lot of life left.

Almost eight years after its abrupt cancellation at NBC, Mads Mikkelsen is speaking out about possibly bringing the show back to the air.

"There's always a chance. It's all about finding a home for it," Mikkelsen told Deadline while promoting Indiana Jones & the Dial of Destiny.

The actor noted that bringing a TV show back after cancellation is no easy feat but recognized that timing would be the biggest hurdle.

"Of course, we're running out of time. We can't wait 20 years, but in the next couple of years, if somebody finds a home, I think we are all ready to take it up again," he explained.

Mikkelsen starred as Hannibal Lecter, a brilliant forensic psychiatrist, and gourmet, who is also secretly a serial killer and a cannibal, known as the Chesapeake Ripper.

Hugh Dancy played adversary Will Graham, a gifted criminal profiler and hunter of serial killers.

He visualizes himself committing the murders he investigates to understand the killers' behaviors.

There truly was nothing else on TV quite like it, and it's sad to think that had it premiered now, it would have probably landed at Peacock.

Many viewers believed the show would have thrived at another destination, but NBC did give the show a chance to find an audience across three seasons.

Unfortunately, the axe swung in August 2015, leaving fans with many questions unanswered.

Dancy reflected on why the show hadn't scored a revival in a recent interview with Collider.

"I'm not exactly surprised because essentially, first and foremost, somebody has to write a fairly sizable check," he told the outlet.

"I'm not talking about me being paid. I'm talking about the cost of making a season of television."

"For a while, it seemed like the streamers were gonna be everybody's savior, in that respect, but now there's been a cutoff there," the actor added.

"There are shows that are watched by millions of people that don't make it past a second season. So, I have no idea what that calculation is," the Law & Order star concluded.

The good news? It sounds like everyone associated with the show is enthusiastic about it staging a comeback.

Ready for the chills, thrills, and bloody spills? Spooky season is upon us! To kickstart your Halloween mood, we've picked out some horror TV recommendations to start.

The post 33 Horror TV Shows To Kickstart Your Spooky Season appeared first on TV Fanatic.

October brings on all the chills, sweater weather, and gorgeous fall leaves. But more importantly, it's only a few more weeks until Halloween.

Spooky season is upon us, TV Fanatics.

Halloween is my favorite time of the year! Between the fun-size candy and endless horror movies, there's a lot of ghoulish treats topping the list.

Horror and spooky-themed TV shows, especially, make this month extra special.

Spooky Favorites - Tall
(MTV, Netflix, AMC)

Masked killers, witchy teens, paranormal ghosts from beyond the grave — there's a bevy of eerie TV shows to fill your Halloween hunger.

There are too many to choose from and a lot of options depending on what kind of horror sub-genre you're into it. Not sure where to start? We've got some tales for you.

Below, we've picked out a handful of fun, freaky and spine-tingling shows to get you into the Halloween spirit and kickstart your spooky season.

Author's Note: Only TV shows will be included below. TV Movies and movies on streaming sites won't be mentioned, so you won't see Netflix's Fear Street trilogy or Amazon Prime's Welcome To The Blumhouse on this list.

Check out the list below!

Saadia Jalalzai in Slasher: Solstice
(Netflix)

Slasher (Shudder, Netflix, Chiller, and Super Channel)

The name speaks for itself. Slasher is the perfect nod to the slasher genre of horror films.

This anthology series focuses on a new serial killer each season and a new set of hopeless victims trying to survive until the end.

Slasher is well-written and doesn't shy away from the gore. From the brainless jock to the resourceful Final Girl, each character feels like they're trying to avoid a bloody death at the hands of their killer.

Plus, every season highlights a new tone, and it's easy to jump into. Maybe give the recent season of Slasher Season 4 (titled "Slasher: Flesh & Blood") a shot?

Angelica Ross as The Chemist - American Horror Story
(FX)

American Horror Story (FX)

American Horror Story is another anthology series that will set your spooky season on fire.

American Horror Story helped to pioneer the format, and now halfway through American Horror Story Season 10, there's a lot of frights for you to catch up on. And just like any horror genre, you can pick the season that's right for you.

Haunted houses, bloody curses, dark asylums, and aliens are a few of the tropes awaiting each story.

The series is a tad inconsistent with delivering pure horror in the later seasons, but when it hits its stride, the eerie chills make it a fun time. Plus, with ten seasons and a spinoff, it's an excellent option for a binge-worthy fix.

The Sheriff
(Netflix)

Midnight Mass (Netflix)

Midnight Mass is the latest anthology series from the mind of Mike Flanagan.

The series takes place on a small island and focuses on a tight-knit community dealing with religious fanaticism and the supernatural. Chaos eventually threatens to tear everything (and everyone) apart.

Midnight Mass features many familiar elements from a Mike Flanagan-created show: interpersonal drama, a creepy aesthetic, and many "blink and you'll miss it" surprises hiding in the background. Religion plays a connecting thread through the plot and themes, so beware if that is a theme you're not interested in exploring.

Midnight Mass Season 1 is a quick binge with seven episodes, but the momentum rages like a wildfire once it gets going in the second half.

Slasher - Scream Season 1 Episode 10
(MTV)

Scream (MTV)

Scream was an underrated gem dealing with the weight of the juggernaut that was the Scream movies.

Say what you will about movie vs. TV, but the adventures in Lakewood offered a suspense-filled slasher whodunnit with lots of fun to spare. The MTV series channeled its own meta-style and paid homage to the movies.

And the cast of characters was a great mix of classic horror archetypes mixed with new depth. (Brooke is a great example of growing beyond her mean girl trope.)

If you're in the mood for a modern take on the slasher genre, Scream would be a great option. Its reboot has its moments, but the first two seasons and Halloween special are the main draws.

The Bent-Neck Lady - The Haunting of Hill House
(Netflix)

The Haunting of Hill House (Netflix)

Just like Midnight Mass, The Haunting of Hill House is peak Mike Flanagan. However, you'll get unrelenting horror and ghostly terror in this mini-series.

The Haunting of Hill House Season 1 takes place within a (you guessed it!) haunted house filled with ghosts. The story focuses on the present and the past, centering on a family dealing with the trauma from their time living at Hill House.

Creepy jumpscares, ghosts hanging around in the background, terrifying twists … this anthology has it all. And, it has well-written characters performed by a talented cast; you can feel their connection and the tension between them as a family. If you're more into supernatural, this is the best of the three Flanagan series.

Make sure you have a light on if you're watching at night. But, don't say we didn't warn you.

Treasured Pet
(Hulu)

Into The Dark (Hulu)

Into The Dark is an interesting entry on this list as it gives you the most horror movie-like experience as a TV show. Each episode is framed around a holiday but in an anthology setting.

A slasher for New Year's Eve? A haunted board game for Halloween? Corrupted killing dolls for Easter?

Into The Dark goes there and plays off the horror tropes we've come to love.

You don't need to watch every episode in chronological order to have a good time or follow the plot. Pick the holidays you feel like watching and jump around to get into the spooky spirit.

Dary Looks - The Walking Dead Season 11 Episode 6
(Josh Stringer/AMC)

The Walking Dead (AMC)

Do you like zombies? Do you want A LOT of zombies? No?!

How about "walkers" then? I joke, but The Walking Dead is the titan for zombie apocalypse fair on TV.

Its spinoffs, Fear The Walking Dead and The Walking Dead: World Beyond, equally deliver that post-apocalyptic vibe you've been craving.

Though, if you're planning to start a series, try with the main entry first. The Walking Dead has many strong seasons, especially in the first half, and great characters like Rick, Glenn, Maggie, Michonne, and more are in the mix.

There are 11 seasons waiting for you if you get hooked on the zombie chaos and drama between the survivors.

The Shock of Her Life - Stranger Things Season 3 Episode 4
(Netflix)

Stranger Things (Netflix)

Stranger Things is the perfect nostalgia when you're in the mood for 80s adventures with a modern twist.

Set in Hawkins, Indiana, the series focuses on a ragtag group of kids battling the paranormal and trying to save their missing friends. In the subsequent seasons, the paranormal horrors grow to affect the town and the unsuspecting citizens.

Plus, there's a government conspiracy, equally strong plots with the adults and teens, and great special effects with its monster designs. Seriously, the monsters on Strangers Things would be frightening to face in real life.

There's a reason why this series became (and still is) a cultural phenomenon.

I Know What You Did - I Know What You Did Last Summer
(Prime Video)

I Know What You Did Last Summer (Amazon Prime)

Just in time for spooky season 2021, we have Amazon Prime's latest horror entry on the list.

I Know What You Did Last Summer's name says it all. This series is the first TV adaptation inspired by the iconic 90s teen slasher film (and the Lois Duncan novel) of the same name.

The story, once again, focuses on a group of teens being stalked by a killer one year later after covering up a death caused by a car accident. Expect to see chills, thrills, and blood spills for your Halloween pleasure.

I Know What You Did Last Summer is perfect if you're in the mood to start a brand new series and join along weekly for each new terror that comes next.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer (The WB and UPN)

Instead of playing victim to the supernatural creatures, jump into the shoes of Buffy Summers and take them down.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer is an amazing cult classic that balances horror elements with witty comedy. The series focuses on a group of teen outsiders as they face everything weird and paranormal that affects their demonic town.

Plus, you have Sarah Michelle Gellar in her iconic role as Buffy, the one chosen slayer in all the world to hunt and kill the vampires.

Great writing, a strong cast, and emotional beats that will tug at your heartstrings. You might think it's a campy entry from its name alone, but the series is so much more. It's one of the best series coming out of the 90s.

Making Money - True Blood
(HBO)

True Blood (HBO)

HBO's True Blood is the perfect option if you want more drama mixed into your horror. And plenty of sex and excess to make you blush.

There are many reasons why True Blood became our guilty pleasure summer obsession during its 7-season run.

Between the supernatural elements and the captivating characters, the series kept us on our toes. It also had cheeky writing with characters ready to bite back with their words instead of their fangs.

And, new mysteries plagued the town to keep the seasons interesting, from werewolves to witches to a vampire conspiracy.

Abby Mills in Harper's Island
(CBS/CHRIS HELCERMANAS-BENGE)

Harper's Island (CBS)

Not all horror has to be supernatural or extremely gory. CBS's mini-series, Harper's Island, channeled a classic mix of slasher and Agatha Christie's "And Then There Were None."

The series focused on a wedding party heading to the island to celebrate their big day. Similar murders happened in the past on the island, and as more people disappear, the guests can't help but wonder if the serial killer has returned to enact another string of killings.

Does anyone make it out of the wedding alive? Who is the killer?

You'll have to watch to find out.

Salem - Tall - Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Season 2 Episode 15
(Diyah Pera/Netflix)

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (Netflix)

Bring on all the teen drama with a demonic twist!

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina gave a darker side to the classic Archie Comics character. Plenty of magic spells, gore, and darkness to fill your spooky season thirst. The aesthetic alone feels like it's ready for Halloween every episode.

And, it was a different take on the TGIF classic TV series, Sabrina The Teenage Witch.

If you want some witchy fun with a darker Riverdale twist, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina might be right up your alley.

Masked Skeleton - Channel Zero
(Syfy)

Channel Zero (Syfy)

Think of Channel Zero like Slasher or American Horror Story, but the plots are about creepypastas.

It's another anthology series with self-contained arcs and lots of horror elements. You can choose which set of episodes to watch to follow the relatively short narrative.

Seriously, each season's plot only lasts six episodes!

Go right in with one batch of episodes or try all four seasons. Channel Zero delivered terror and chills with each arc that felt vastly different from the other.

Eye of the Beholder
(CBS (Screenshot))

The Twilight Zone (CBS)

Take a trip into the paranormal and explore the unknown in The Twilight Zone.

Whether it's the classic black and white series or the many reboots (like the recent CBS All Access series), The Twilight Zone has hooked viewers for generations. This is the show that has inspired many parodies and cartoon nods.

The Twilight Zone features a new mystery or case of the unknown each week. Sometimes the plot deals with sci-fi, or it's a paranormal oddity ready to deliver a harsh life lesson.

Once you're in, you'll wonder if you'll ever want to stop watching. But that's what happens when you venture into The Twilight Zone. (*Theme music intensifies*)

Cracking A Case - The X-Files
(Fox)

The X-Files (Fox)

A sci-fi classic that left its mark on the world like no other.

If you're not in the mood for killers, werewolves, or other horror tropes, a trip to a more scientific theme might be it. In this case, it's all about aliens and the paranormal.

Join FBI special agent Mulder and special agent Scully as they tackle cases to prove (or disprove) the truth of the paranormal.

Mulder and Scully are a great team, and they balance each other by providing a lot of truth or skepticism for each case. Plus, there's a fine mix of season-long arcs and one-off "monsters of the week" episodes.

The First Transformation - Teen Wolf
(MTV)

Teen Wolf (MTV)

Teen Wolf is more than just ship-worthy couples and werewolf abs. (Don't get me wrong, it's a big part, but there's so much more!)

Look beyond the high school aesthetic to see a powerful story about small-town citizens fighting against paranormal entities and forming a new werewolf pack — lots of heart, zingers, and supernatural action.

Teen Wolf's special effects are one of its greatest strengths. The transformation from a teen into the wolf is still one of the best scenes for a teen horror show.

Plus, the horror tone comes out in full force, especially with its use of shadows, gore, and creepy music. Teen Wolf does a great job balancing spooky and action.

The Mighty Chainsaw - Ash vs Evil Dead
(STARZ)

Ash vs. Evil Dead (STARZ)

Fan of the Evil Dead movie series? Well, we've got the show for you.

Ash vs. Evil Dead is a continuation of the films 30 years later. Ash Williams (the main hero) is back, and he's fighting the forces of evil as they corrupt the world.

This show is all horror-comedy. It doesn't take itself too seriously, so you'll get plenty of laughs in between all the gore and outlandish horror.

Plus, it'll bring back all the nostalgia of the films. Pair this with your Evil Dead movie night to keep the fun going.

Zayday Williams - Scream Queens
(FOX)

Scream Queens (Fox)

Think of Scream Queens like a B-horror movie playing off all the sorority tropes. But there's so much more to the series than just pledge night and a masked killer picking off victims.

Scream Queens is filled with plenty of wit and one-liners to make you smile.

A great cast that includes Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, and Keke Palmer, to name a few, make their characters come alive. And Scream Queens delivers with the camp and horror nods.

There are only two seasons (the sorority massacre and the hospital bloodshed), but by the end of the final episode, you'll be wanting more of this cult classic.

Terror At Night - Penny Dreadful
(Showtime)

Penny Dreadful (Showtime)

Penny Dreadful adds that dark gothic touch to your spooky season.

The series includes many elements of classic horror monsters and characters, like Count Dracula and Frankenstein's monster, but in a darker and stylish aesthetic. Full iconic horror mixed into a beautifully addictive story.

The plot of Penny Dreadful is one of the main draws as the narrative will hook you in. However, the twists, the bloodshed, and the creature effects bring this show to the next level.

Penny Dreadful isn't like those childish fairytales you heard as a kid.

Hiding Spot
(Netflix)

Locke & Key (Netflix)

Want something spooky for you and the family?

Netflix's Locke & Key might be the right choice. Most of the story focuses on three young siblings discovering magical keys in their home that give them powers or uncover secrets.

Locke & Key will sometimes feel more like an adventure series, especially with its fantasy effects and sibling shenanigans. Though, as with any spooky show, there's always a sinister twist lurking within the tale.

It's a great one if you want less of the scares and more of the adventure.

On the Case - Nancy Drew Season 2 Episode 13
(Colin Bentley/The CW)

Nancy Drew (The CW)

You might be wondering, "Why Nancy Drew?" And to that, I say, "Why not!"

Nancy Drew's current tale on The CW focuses on many cases that involve the supernatural or curses within the quiet town of Horseshoe Bay. During Nancy Drew Season 1 alone, there's a poltergeist haunting the main cast and pushing them to solve a murder.

We're not even getting into the other terrors, like a sea creature with a death curse or demonic demons.

Come for the paranormal cases, but you'll stay for the excellent writing and the chemistry between the Drew Crew.

Nadja on the Prowl - What We Do In The Shadows Season 1 Episode 3
(Copyright 2019, FX Networks. All Rights Reserved.)

What We Do In The Shadows (FX)

So much comedy. So many laughs. So many goofs.

What We Do In The Shadows is a well-acted and well-written horror-comedy. The laughs will keep coming as you follow the misadventures of these vampires living in the modern world.

Similar to some other entries on this list, a horror-comedy can be the perfect fix for your spooky season needs. It's not always about the haunts and terrors that go bump in the night.

What We Do In The Shadows might be just what you're looking for during spooky season (or beyond).

Slappy
(Fox Kids)

Goosebumps (YTV and Fox Kids)

If you're a 90s kid, Goosebumps will bring a warm flicker to your jack-o-lantern heart.

Watched the series before? Jump back in for a rewatch.

New to the series? Oh, you're in for a treat!

Based on the classic books by R. L. Stine, each episode of Goosebumps highlights one of the plots from his books. It's a great way to catch up on the novels if you don't have the time to read the Goosebumps books.

Plus, it's so deliciously nostalgic. The 90s kept us fed with horror shows for kids.

Ghostly Enemy
(Nickelodeon)

Are You Afraid Of The Dark? (YTV and Nickelodeon)

Another great horror kids show from the 90s. (Just like I said above, it was so perfect.)

The series focused on a group of kids called "The Midnight Society," as they met in the woods at night to tell scary stories. The tales would cover everything spooky, from vampires to ghosts to werewolves to scary clowns.

Are You Afraid Of The Dark? has two iterations you could choose depending on what you're in the mood for watching.

If you want something episodic to jump around, go for the original series from the 90s. Each episode will cover a new tale and offer something different per watch.

Though, if you want a connected plot, go for the 2019 or 2020 Nickelodean reboots. These mini-series cover one big mystery each season and include a new cast of characters in their version of The Midnight Society.

One Last Mission - Supernatural Season 15 Episode 20
(Cristian Cretu/The CW)

Supernatural (The WB and The CW)

Supernatural is a bit of a time commitment. We're talking 15 seasons of demon-fighting glory here!

However, you'll get a large selection of episodes to fill your horror-loving heart.

Supernatural is a simple show at its core: two brothers on the road together defeating demons and solving supernatural cases. Werewolves, zombies, vampires. If you can think of a horror monster, the Winchester brothers have probably faced it.

What you'll also get is well-written characters, plenty of action, and 15-seasons' worth of character development between the brothers. All the positives are there to balance out the commitment.

Purgersize - The Purge Season 2 Episode 4
(Alfonso Bresciani/USA Network)

The Purge (USA Network)

Just like the movie series, The Purge TV show hits many of the same beats.

You'll get a night of bloody fun, plenty of action with people trying to kill each other, and an alternate world where this holiday exists. It's a great companion piece to the installments in the main film series.

Both seasons focus on two very different themes: The Purge Season 1 is all about the time while in The Purge, and The Purge Season 2 highlights the after-effects in the year leading up to the bloody night.

If you want more Purge in your life, add this into the mix to start the spooky season countdown.

Campfire Tales - Dead of Summer
(Freeform)

Dead of Summer (Freeform)

Friday The 13th. Fear Street Part Two: 1978. Sleepaway Camp.

What do these have in common? They're all slashers set at a summer camp.

Dead of Summer captures the 80s vibe of a teen camp slasher. Think of it like a B-horror flick but extended for ten episodes.

The thrills are addictive, and the characters fit into all the cheesy horror tropes. It's an underrated gem that will give you all the slasher treats you want with your tricks.

Hannibal Mask
(NBC)

Hannibal (NBC)

Brace yourselves, TV Fanatics. This might be the show that pleasantly surprises you based on its writing, editing, and overall aesthetic.

For many fans and audiences, Hannibal has been deemed one of the best horror TV shows. (No pressure with your expectations.)

Hannibal centers on FBI profiler Will Graham and his team-up with iconic horror villain Dr. Hannibal Lecter during his investigations. There's a fascinating balance between solving the cases and Hannibal trying to manipulate everyone around him to achieve his goal.

You never know what Hannibal (or the rest of the cast) will do next. The show has a way of keeping you on your toes.

Going Back to Ardham -- Tall - Lovecraft Country Season 1 Episode 10
(Eli Joshua Ade/HBO)

Lovecraft Country (HBO)

Lovecraft Country only lasted one season, but it was a strong arc filled with gripping drama and monstrous terrors.

Set in the 1950s, Lovecraft Country Season 1 centered on a group taking a road trip searching for a missing parent. Along the way, the group deals with racism, small towns, and dangerous monsters that threaten to kill them.

If you're a fan of the works of H. P. Lovecraft and the Cthulhu vibe, Lovecraft Country might be for you. Many of the monsters and tropes were inspired by Lovecraft.

Plus, the terror alone will pull you in!

Joining The Darkness
(Syfy)

Van Helsing (Syfy)

Let me say this upfront: Van Helsing isn't the most consistent series on this list.

Between the vampire lore, the deaths, and a mix of magic, this post-apocalyptic series goes all over the place. But, it owns every minute of its outlandish action and drama.

Van Helsing doesn't take itself too seriously. Don't get me wrong though, the show has a serious plot, and the cast performs it amazingly. However, everyone involved knows exactly what kind of show they're making.

Van Helsing is an off-the-wall and thrilling horror drama that throws everything at you. Prepare for this to be your next cult classic favorite.

The Darkness Inside
(Netflix)

Sweet Home (Netflix)

Need a new obsession now that you're done bingeing Squid Game Season 1?

Try Sweet Home, an apocalyptic horror set in South Korea. The series focuses on a group of residents trapped within an apartment building as monsters try to wipe out humanity.

The terrifying creatures are some of its biggest draws. The monsters terrify and rip through the building, hunting down the residents to no end. But, it's a strong drama with well-defined characters too.

No need for music to join this monster mash.

Monster! Scream!
(Cartoon Network)

Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated (Cartoon Network)

Yes, this is a cartoon. And yes, this is a cartoon aimed at children, so you won't get any blood or guts here.

On the other hand, what you will get is one of Scooby-Doo's best series to date.

Mystery Inc. is in peak form as the iconic members deal with new foes and iconic enemies terrorizing unsuspecting towns. Plus, this is a serialized show, which means the characters have overarching plots and developments.

This isn't like your typical Scooby-Doo cartoon. Every Scooby-Doo cartoon is amazing and loved, but if we had to recommend one, place this one higher on your list.

Never Trust a Pretty Girl with an Ugly Secret - Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 1 Episode 1
(The WB)

"Hello, Clarice." Is that line of dialogue familiar because you've seen The Silence of the Lambs, or have you watched too many TV shows spoofing the movie?

The post TV Is Too Obsessed With The Silence Of The Lambs appeared first on TV Fanatic.

It has been 30 years since The Silence of the Lambs premiered on the silver screen.

Since then, the film has been tremendously influential on pop culture — especially TV.

You may have never seen it, but chances are you know everything about The Silence of the Lambs just from watching your favorite TV shows.

Hannibal!Dwight - The Office
(NBC)

Clarice (a TV series about what happened to the protagonist of The Silence of the Lambs after the film's events) just premiered.

Less than 10 years before Clarice began airing, Hannibal (a prequel series about the infamous Dr. Hannibal Lecter) ran for three seasons on NBC.

Even when a TV series doesn't directly connect to The Silence of The Lamb, many have taken inspiration from it.

The Silence of the Lambs popularized the idea of consulting a convicted serial killer to catch another serial killer. Just about every investigative procedural has done that plot.

Transport Chair - The Rookie Season 2 Episode 10
(ABC/Kelsey McNeal)

The Rookie Season 2 Episode 11 and The Rookie Season 2 Episode 20 had Nolan and the others turn to serial killer Rosalind Dyer for help catching the serial killer who abducted Chen and then Armstong.

NCIS Season 3 Episode 3 had Gibbs working with a serial killer he previously collared to capture a copycat killer.

Some shows go even further than just borrowing the film's general ideas. Betty Cooper's storyline has been one long remake of The Silence of the Lambs since Riverdale Season 2. Spoofing The Silence of the Lambs became a recurring theme during Angie Tribecca Season 3.

Don't think it's just procedurals or mystery shows referencing The Silence of the Lambs.

Star Trek with the Lambs
(CBS)

On Star Trek: Deep Space Nice Season 3 Episode 25, the scene where Dax confronts Joran, a murderer, was shot much like Clarice's first encounter with Hannibal Lecter.

A later episode, Star Trek: Deep Space Season 7 Episode 13, had Dax consulting Joran to catch a murderer, making it an episode-long homage to The Silence of the Lambs.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine isn't the only science fiction TV show to reference The Silence of The Lambs.

Stargate SG-1 Season 4 Episode 15 took inspiration from it too. O'Neill had to seek help from the incarcerated ex-colonel Maybourne. Maybourne then escaped and called O'Neill from a tropical location, just like Hannibal Lecter.

Saturday morning cartoons have gotten in on the act. Fillmore Season 1 Episode 1 was a Silence of the Lambs spoof — with vandalism substituting for murder and cannibalism.

Fillmore
(ABC)

Many shows have recreated or spoofed key sequences or images from the film.

Less than a year after The Silence of the Lambs came out in the theaters, Parker Lewis Can't Lose Season 2 Episode 4 parodied the of image Hannibal in a restraining wheeler.

On Monk Season 3 Episode 3, Monk's climactic scene wearing night-vision goggles to track the villain of the week in his apartment was an homage to The Silence of the Lambs sequence where Jaime Gumb uses night-vision goggles to stalk Clarice in a dark basement.

The homage is even more notable because actor Ted Levine starred in both The Silence of the Lambs and Monk.

Stottlemeyer
(USA Network)

When Barney tries to avoid getting slapped on How I Met Your Mother Season 5 Episode 9, his speech to Robin spoofs Hannibal's speech to Clarice.

When Dwight sliced off a dummy's face and put it on like a mask on The Office Season 5 Episode 13, he looked just like Hannibal. To complete the impression, he said, in a very Hannibal-like voice, "Clarice."

Speaking of quoting from the movie, TV characters quote, paraphrase, or reference lines from it all the time.

"Quid pro quo. I tell you things; you tell me things." Dean paraphrased the line on Supernatural Season 5 Episode 11.

Dean Has a Beer - Supernatural Season 15 Episode 19
(Bettina Strauss/The CW)

"I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice bottle of Chianti." Jake references the quote on Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 6 Episode 11

"It rubs the lotion on its skin, or else it gets the hose again." This quote seems popular with TV doctors. Dr. George O'Malley mentioned it on Grey's Anatomy Season 2 Episode 10, and Dr. Perry Cox mentioned it on Scrubs Season 1 Episode 12.

The list above is only a fraction of The Silence of the Lambs' references to grace TV screens. It's not hard to see why TV is obsessed with it.

It's a great movie (although not without controversy). Hannibal Lecter is one of the most terrifying and mesmerizing villains of all time. Plus, the images and dialogue are iconic.

Hannibal Lecter - Clarice
(CBS)

As revered as The Silence of the Lambs is, it might be time to let it go. So much of it has been repeatedly referenced or spoofed; it's hard to imagine any TV show (even great ones) coming up with a fresh take on the material.

There are so many other horror and thriller films for TV to riff from. Poor Clarice may never stop hearing the lambs' scream, but TV should move on from The Silence of the Lambs.

Over to you, TV Fanatics! Is it time for TV to say good-bye to The Silence of the Lambs references?

How does it all end? Can Will use Hannibal to catch the Red Dragon? Read on to find out in this review of Hannibal Season 3 Episode 13, the series finale.

The post Hannibal Season 3 Episode 13 Review: The Wrath of the Lamb appeared first on TV Fanatic.

]]>
Well, there we have it, folks. This was the series finale, Hannibal Season 3 Episode 13. It was a good episode, but I wanted it to be great.

Earlier during the week, I had been in correspondence with a friend of mine who watches the show, and I said to her, "I'm half expecting Will to break Hannibal out of jail and run away together." I'm not taking any pleasure in being right. I wasn't really surprised by much, and that disappointed me.

Let's set aside for a moment the fact that this was a series finale, or even a season finale. On its own, this would have been a decent episode of Hannibal, but not a great one. Apart from the final few seconds with Bedelia, the whole episode was predictable, and not just because I knew the book.

I found myself wondering why characters were making certain choices. Why on earth would Jack and Alana trust that everything would have gone according to plan, especially after knowing how Will had 'inadvertently' set Chilton up? Knowing Will's history with Hannibal? How was there not a contingency plan?

Even the story between Will and Hannibal was entirely predictable. The burning stag in Dolarhyde's house was some serious foreshadowing of Hannibal's death.

When Will said goodbye, I knew he'd be back. They were practically seducing each other during the episode: Hannibal telling Will to think of him, Will saying please and telling Hannibal he needed him, Hannibal pulling over with a playful "Going my way?" after the breakout.

When Will put the plan in motion, I knew Hannibal would actually escape. When they looked romantically at the cliff as Hannibal reminisced about all the now-dead people he had brought there, I figured that cliff would be their end. Honestly, I just wanted to be surprised. I wanted to be at the edge of my seat.

More than that though, I wanted to believe that, somehow, we'd find out Will Graham was a better and stronger person than the creature of dependency that Hannibal molded him into. I wasn't expecting Will to be a big damn hero. I wasn't even expecting him to be able to go home.

However, after everything he'd been through at the hands of Hannibal, as a victim, I wanted to know that he at least had the strength to do something better. I had hoped that whatever small light he had, whatever tiny beacon that anchored him to do right, would have been triumphant over Hannibal's manipulation.

Will once said that killing someone was "the ugliest thing in the world." However, here he was, having a grand time, killing the hell out of Francis Dolarhyde with his murder husband Hannibal. Which, by the way, was an absolutely stunning scene, and one I will rewatch for a long time.

Hannibal: See, this is all I ever wanted for you Will. For both of us.

Will: It’s beautiful.

🔗 permalink: It’s beautiful.

I suppose taking Hannibal over the cliff with him was Will's final act of righteousness. It also seems that the cliff dive was the only way Will knew to end both his dependency and Hannibal's cruelty. Those both make sense for who his character was, and I do really like the finality of this ending as well.

Honestly though, part of me would have preferred if he had just taken a gun from one of the prison transport guards and shot Hannibal in the head. Crude, but effective.

The MVP of this episode was Bedelia Du Maurier, whose loss of composure and poise was almost palpable when she heard Will's plan. She knew her days were marked if Hannibal escaped.

Will: I’d pack my bags if I were you, Bedelia. Meat’s back on the menu.

Bedelia: You righteous, reckless, twitchy little man. You might as well cut all of our throats and be done with it.

Will: Ready or not, here he comes.

The only thing that surprised me was that she was left alive, and only lost a limb. Did Will talk his murder husband down from completely killing her to just amputating a leg? Was Hannibal planning on coming back to have that meal?

The Red Dragon scenes were all pretty fantastic, and Richard Armitage delivered as he always does. I quite enjoyed his pow-wow with Will and his last scenes with Reba. He convinced me every single time he was on screen. I could have used a little more Dragon.

Also, Lecter's speech to Alana was absolutely chilling. He made no light of the fact that he wanted to kill her and that he was going to do so. Part of me kind of wanted to see how he would have made that happen if he had gotten the chance to.

I also quite enjoyed Frederick Chilton's appearance. I liked that he called Alana out on her bad decisions and on her self-preservation, and I liked how bloodthirsty he was for Hannibal's death, wanting to wear his skin. All of Hannibal's disfigured victims literally want a piece of him.

One of the things that was spot on was the humor of the episode. This may have been one of the funniest episodes there was this season. The forensics team was hilarious (and I really wish we had gotten more of them this year), and Hannibal had some impressive one-liners.

This may seem like a harsh review, but it's really not. I do actually think it was a good episode. I like the finality of the ending, I liked the humor, stunning visuals as always. The story, though predictable, was told well.

It just wasn't a GREAT episode, and that's what I was hoping for. It seems even less so when considering that this is the last episode of the show we will ever see. Last season's Mizumono gave us a season finale that left us on the edge of our seat, with surprises and twists. This series finale barely raised my heart rate.

Other notes:

 • Hannibal Lecter has worn some interesting suits, but that one in the first church scene? That was definitely not my favorite.
 • The visual of the night would be Dolarhyde's blood forming The Dragon's wings. Given the duality of the character, it was fitting that both would be seen in his death.
 • Here we are, folks, the final favorite quote. The cannibalism joke Will made with Bedelia was close, but the final quote of the week goes to the titular character, Hannibal Lecter.

Hannibal: You didn’t just say goodbye. That little extra bit at the end, what was it you said?

Will: You’d never have turned yourself in unless I rejected you.

Hannibal: Yes, that extra bit. I believe that’s what they call a ‘mic drop.’ You dropped the mic, Will.

So there we have it. The final episode of Hannibal. What did you guys think of the ending? Did you think it was a great episode?

Remember you can relive this series finale as often as you like when you watch Hannibal online.
