Ghosted has been ghosted by Fox. The comedy series has officially been canceled after one season, and the network might not be airing the other three episodes!

Fox is sticking the fork in Ghosted.

In one of the least surprising moves of the season, the network has opted to cancel the series after one season.

What's more, the remaining three episodes may never see the light of day on the network since it has opted to pull the show from the Sunday schedule.

The series followed a skeptic and a genius who were recruited by an organization called The Bureau Underground to investigate unexplained activities in Los Angeles.

Ghosted Season 1 debuted in October with 3.6 million viewers and a 1.4 rating among adults 18-49. It benefited from inflated lead-ins thanks to football.

In fact, one episode even secured a 1.6 rating in the demo, which is a robust number for any network on the night. The show was placed on hiatus in January.

The reason for the hiatus is that Paul Lieberstein was drafted in to replace showrunner Kevin Etten midseason after it emerged that the network was not impressed with the direction of the series.

After a six month hiatus, Ghosted returned earlier this month, but without the big lead-ins, the series collapsed. The four June episodes averaged 1.2 million viewers and a 0.4 rating.

Fox has been changing focus of late, and there are even questions about whether the network will be airing scripted series in a few years.

Thursdays will be given up to Thursday Night Football in the fall, and the network has also snapped up WWE SmackDown for Fridays nights effective from October 2019.

Ghosted joins The Exorcist, The Mick, LA to Vegas, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Last Man on Earth, Lucifer, and The X-Files as the shows canceled by Fox.

What are your thoughts on this cancellation?

Ghosted and LA to Vegas have not been renewed or canceled by Fox, but is there hope for either series? Fox execs weigh in on when to expect news.

Ghosted and LA to Vegas are still awaiting word on whether they will return during the 2018-2019 season at Fox.

With the network confirming its fall schedule earlier this morning, and also revealing what's on tap for midseason, fans of the two comedy series have been on tenterhooks to find out whether the above shows will be back.

Leroy Believes - Ghosted

Thankfully, Fox has offered an update on both series, and while they're not yet renewed, they're not canceled either.

“We haven’t made a decision,” said Fox boss Dana Walden during a press call ahead of the network's upfront presentation.

Related: Fox Fall Schedule: What's on the Move?

She went on to confirm that Ghosted Season 1 will return to the schedule in July. Paul Lieberstein replaced Kevin Etten as showrunner of the series back in November.

The series is currently averaging 2.9 million viewers and a 1.2 rating among adults 18-49. Those are solid results, but it is inflated due to sports propping the numbers up.

As for midseason entry, LA to Vegas, it is still very much in limbo.

We “wanted to make decision if we have place to allow the show to grow,” Walden said, adding that the potential of Season 2 will be revisited when everyone returns to Los Angeles.

“If we can’t find a way to make noise, we won’t do it,” Walden said.

Related: The X-Files: Canceled?

LA to Vegas is averaging a meager 2.3 million viewers and a 0.7 rating, so the show's future has never been certain. News should come out about the shows in the next few months.

Fox recently felt the ire of the internet for canceling Brooklyn Nine-Nine after five seasons, but NBC swooped in to save the series.

What do you think of the decision to leave both series in limbo?

Do you watch either series? Do they deserve to stick around?

On Ghosted Season 1 Episode 9, Max pulls double duty trying to hunt down a killer creature and impress Annie who gets invited to tag along with Leroy and him.

Trying to accomplish a work trip when you ask your crush to come along is not easy, but Max seemed to have made it work.

For the time being at least, he and Annie still haven't moved beyond saying they like each other, so maybe Leroy needs to give them another push.

On Ghosted Season 1 Episode 9, Max was caught in a weird situation when Annie tagged alone with Leroy and him on a new mission, and he was focused on impressing her in the process. Meanwhile, Barry got more than he bargained for when he tried to help Ava in her love life.

Tagging Along - Ghosted
(FOX)

Max had a lot to handle this time around, and he found success in all of it.

He and Annie getting somewhere in their relationship was worth exploring even if it did take a bite out of the mission. The way his little journey was set up was promising because it showed more of who he was without tipping too much into just his work or romantic life.

Hopefully, Max and Annie get to a stable place in their relationship because so far they are still not together.

There is that mutual understanding that they like each other, but what now?

25 Shows to Binge If You Love New York

Annie has — or had — her boyfriend, and Max has — or had — a wife. Who can even keep up anymore?

Neither of their significant others are exactly big parts of the story, and Max's wife plot seemed to have fizzled out as quickly as it was brought up. As much as it mattered in the beginning, Max's wife wasn't actually a driving force for him to stick around.

It would be great to see that wrapped up either with Max letting the past go or finally coming face to face with her. Odds are she will appear again at some point to stir up some drama when Max and Annie start to get more serious.

Max: It looks like I murdered a Smurf.

🔗 permalink: It looks like I murdered a Smurf.

Leroy didn't had as big of a part to play which makes sense.

Focusing back on his story though would be important though because sometimes it feels like we know more about Max than Leroy.

I probably brought this up before, but I have to again. Leroy had a connection with his partner's son that we never see anymore. It was there for one episode and then it was like that wasn't as vital anymore.

I'm not saying that boy should appear again, but it would give some more insight into who Leroy is.

Maybe when Leroy and Max go on their next solo mission something can bring up Leroy's past as opposed to the focus shifting to Max.

And I'm not saying it is bad that we know this much about Max, as it makes sense for his story to be more forthcoming since he shares plenty while Leroy doesn't.

Max: You mean you’ve seen the Wizard of Oz?

🔗 permalink: You mean you’ve seen the Wizard of Oz?

The mission this time around didn't grab my attention. There were scarier monsters with a much richer backstory so focusing on this snatcher was hard when Max's personal life was much more interesting.

Not every new mystery has to be as engaging if the personal story of Max and Leroy holds up, and this time it did.

Leroy and Max had more of a shift in their partnership, and Max and Annie connected on the romantic front.

All I am holding out for now is more alien mythology to come up on future missions because this is how the show was introduced, and it would be nice to see that return even for a little while.

Barry: Open up that chest cavity and let me see that heart.

🔗 permalink: Open up that chest cavity and let me see that heart.

Barry and Ava got to bond in the strangest way, and it really stood out.

I'm not sure if it was good or bad, but I'm leaning towards good because they don't always have their own things going on, so this was a nice reminder that they can.

Ava revealed so much, and I am still left wondering why. She doesn't share much about herself, and Barry specifically doesn't seem like the coworker she would think to talk to.

But in a way, that was unlikely and made it way more comedic than it would have been if it was Ava talking to Annie or someone we weren't properly introduced to.

And to be honest, Barry should be the next one to tag along with Max and Leroy.

Leroy: You saw Batman?

What did you think of the episode?

Should Max and Annie move faster in their growing relationship? And what should be explored in Leroy's life to not feel like he has a small part in the process?

They get to the woods and Max sees the monster about to attack a son and father so he rushes in. Leroy and Annie follow Max but they end up lost in the woods.

The group runs away from the monster in a cabin and Max runs out to get the backpack that the dead guy in the cabin left behind. Annie volunteers to carry the dead guy out as bait for the monster only for it to take the body with an explosive attached which seems to work.

Annie admits to Max that she was happy to hear that he liked her. She thinks they have to figure some things out first but afterwards maybe they could

Sometimes you just need to see Adam Scott try to eat two cheeseburgers in a limited amount of time before things actually turn supernatural.

It also helps that this is all part of the fun back and forth between Leroy and Max, everything works so much better when their partnership is the focus of the episode.

On  Ghosted Season 1 Episode 8, Max and Leroy need to figure out if a haunted hayride has a paranormal problem or is just guilty of pulling off a successful prank to make more business. While trying to get to the bottom of it, the team deals with some issues amongst themselves.

An Undercover Hayride - Ghosted
(FOX)

Max really is starting to come into his own with the paranormal leads that he follows with every mission.

Making Max think that he was in charge was probably the best thing that could have happened because it made him push more. He didn't let his ideas be pushed off to the side because they don't sound like they could actually happen.

Leadership also allowed Max to take steps to figure things out even if he had to do it alone and that only helped them deal with the issue quicker.

It makes sense that only one half of the team can believe, but as the audience we know that everything isn't going to be a prank and it will never have a normal explanation. Following along with Max gets more and more promising every time he is right and Leroy can't exactly deny that truth.

Also, Max and Leroy need to make their morning rides to work a daily thing. From the car games to the 6AM burgers, nothing can match that kind of familiar entertainment.

Leroy: Real games have points so I can rub the score in my opponent’s face after I win.

🔗 permalink: Real games have points so I can rub the score in my opponent’s face after I win.

Leroy continues to be the voice of reason that isn't exactly the one that is actually right in the end.

But he did realize that Max was right about something and didn't hesitate to help bury the corpse which has to mean progress. Leroy doesn't have to be open minded to every idea but it would probably help them come to conclusions quicker if both of them were considering every option.

It is also great to continue to see Leroy's fun side when it comes to Max, especially since those two are only getting funnier together.

It has been some time since we have seen Leroy's personal life, specifically the kid we met in the pilot. He was the son of Leroy's old partner and it sounded like there could be more of a story there.

It might be possible to even bring him into the Bureau and watch the bond those two have while Leroy tries to keep his job a secret.

Max: I got us cheeseburgers.

Leroy: It’s 6:30AM.

🔗 permalink: 30AM.

The mission at the haunted hayride was exactly the adventure for those people that are still not over Halloween. It explored an activity I was always fascinated by, and I liked that, in a way, both Leroy and Max were right about it.

There was the chance to fit possession and a spirit in one go, but it brought up the never ending reminder of having more time.

These stories have the chance to be drawn out more, maybe even in a way that shadows The X-Files but with more humor holding it up.

When there are is a story that has to be created before the characters can explore it, the end portion feels rushed. Leroy and Max need to first figure out what to do before they actually get to do it, and there never seems to be enough time for both.

During the paranormal, part I end up thinking about how much I would love to see them spend more time there.

A shorter time frame does allow for the mission not to get boring, but I have faith that if there was a chance for Ghosted to expand, they could mix humor and the paranormal missions into something very intense but hilarious.

Barry: I rather send my kid to a circus than an American public school.

Max gets told he is in charge but then Leroy gets a text that says the same thing. Neither knows that the other thinks they are in charge and continue to bicker about if this is a fake prank or a paranormal incident.

They talk to the girl that was taken and she only manages to say one phrase to them, and she continues to act very weird. They then dress up and go to the hayride as workers, they see some workers playing pranks on the people so Leroy assumes it has to be nothing serious.

Max and Leroy figure out that they were both told they were in charge. Max gets taken deeper into the woods by an unknown force. Leroy tracks him down and clues him into what he learned from Barry about a guy who owned the property before but was killed in the woods. They see the spirit of the guy and Max figures out that they need to put his bones back in the grave to stop him from haunting the area.

The other dimension just doesn't seem as exciting when you have Adam Scott sporting a fake ponytail the entire time.

But the very familiar TV show aspect was a reminder of why Ghosted continues to be such an entertaining show, especially with the way the characters and the humor balance out with the mystery of the week.

On Ghosted Season 1 Episode 7, Leroy was dealing with a slight work adjustment where he doesn't get to enjoy what comes from his job when technically the job doesn't even exist. Meanwhile, Max and Leroy deal with a pair of actors working on a show that uncovers paranormal activity.

Paranormal TV - Ghosted
(FOX)

The case this time around was strong enough to keep the story interesting without falling back on the characters too much.

It just so happened though that the characters also managed to have arcs that were captivating and really funny. This made the episode one of the best, and it would only have been better if there was more time to focus on the other dimension.

It all had the potential to be much scarier, and it was a world that could be explored for a while before it felt boring.

Out of all the weird adventures that Max and Leroy went on so far, a dimension where they can't find their way out right away and where murderous shadows lurk is pretty much the winner.

Also, this show that explored all these hauntings sounds like something worth checking out if only for the ''spot the fake effects'' game.

Leroy: Name a pizza place.

Max: Domino’s

🔗 permalink: Domino’s

Leroy had a refreshing issue of a new job where he is accomplishing so much but can't exactly have anyone else know that. It did come off as selfish at first with all perks that he kept describing.

It wasn't until he shared what it felt like working as a mall cop that it made sense. The Bureau and all that it does is important, yet nobody will ever know that except for the people working hard every day to make sure nothing strange harms the world.

Leroy's past as a cop focused on helping others but that was more exposed, and there is nothing wrong with him liking that people knew what he did. Leroy is doing great and has gotten far, being proud of that is not shameful and is actually very relatable.

Max: Sounds like they are really in trouble. Should we help them or…?

🔗 permalink: Sounds like they are really in trouble. Should we help them or … ?

Max probably had other stuff going on, but I will never get over that hair that I was meant to pretend I didn't see standing out the way it did.

Seriously though, a ponytail is far from a disguise when it looks like the way it did on Max.

His student reappearing in his life when he is posing as a crew member on a show is a step down for sure. I didn't understand why Max's student made it seem like he hit rock bottom because he was working behind the scenes on his own show.

Being a professor is important work too, but if Max wasn't undercover and actually decided that his passion was something else, so what?

Although having two stoned dudes that don't even know half the time what is real and what isn't set up a great backdoor excuse for everything that happened.

Why George Costanza is the Secret Protagonist of Seinfeld

In a way, there weren't any witnesses to worry about, and those guys got themselves an experience worth describing on their show.

Max: Wait a second, you watch Doctor Who?

Leroy: I watched one by accident when I was flipping channels.

🔗 permalink: I watched one by accident when I was flipping channels.

Barry disappointed me with the way he tried to get his chair. The woman told him she would try to make it happen, but it wouldn't fit into her schedule that exact day.

Barry decided to order her around, and he got exactly what he deserved. If he had asked nicely, maybe he would have gotten an upgrade and not ended up in a bean bag chair with everyone disliking him.

The bean bag chair was a great idea though and should have been an option from the start. There is nothing softer than stretching out on the floor; Barry might even be the luckiest guy in the office now.

Jon Returns to The Wall - Game of Thrones Season 5 Episode 9

But really, going forward it would be great to see more of Barry but not in a mean way. He is at his best when he is his funny and helpful self instead of bossy and unaware of the trouble he caused himself in a matter of seconds.

Max: Something touched it.

Leroy: What was it? The Devil?

Trusting artificial intelligence programs is always when everything goes wrong, yet the mistake is made over and over again.

The real question though is how did almost everyone turn on Max so quickly? They have worked with him for a while but still were easily swayed to think he was a person that was nothing but evil.

On Ghosted Season 1 Episode 6, Max ended up the villain for a while thanks to a not so friendly A.I. named Sam. Meanwhile, Max and Leroy were struggling a little in their friendship.

Artificial Intelligence - Ghosted
(FOX)

Sam is shady and he was the absolute worst thing to happen to the Bureau, but he was also played by Dax Shepard which somehow made it all okay.

Trusting an A.I. from the very beginning was such a risk, and Barry being one of the few people who wasn't onboard with it made me wonder. Then again, I am too aware of how technology continues to take a slightly terrifying turn so I might have been expecting that more than someone like Annie was.

Sam got away with turning everyone against Max, something I'm still questioning because of how quick that decision seemed to be. Regardless, the person behind this creation is the real mystery and I have no guesses to who that could be.

This could be something worth revisiting but it might not hold as much interest as the introduction of Sam did. The horror that comes from an A.I. can only last so long after they are revealed to have a dark side.

Plus we would have to be really invested in the person specifically. If they are bland or don't have enough of a motive, then they lose all interest right away. Unless it is an alien. An alIen would be fantastic and highly unlikely for now.

Leroy: Also I’m finding it difficult to watch you mush your peas on your plate like a toddler.

🔗 permalink: Also I’m finding it difficult to watch you mush your peas on your plate like a toddler.

Max got the short end of the stick again, but this time around it was even more shocking.

The entire group is still new to one another and yet I still can't see myself getting behind the idea that they would so easily trust a computer system over a coworker.

Leroy especially is Max's partner and should have guessed sooner that Max isn't that jealous to do all of this.

The same goes for Annie, those two are meant to like each other and then she questions his entire participation in the missions.

New and Returning Shows

Annie has seen how committed Max is to the Bureau and how successful he has been at helping them. Why turn on him now as if you didn't witness all of that yourself?

I was waiting for that moment when we found out that Annie and Leroy were truly brainwashed somehow but it turns out they are just easy to fool when it comes to Max.

Good for Leroy though for focusing on Max's annoying habits enough to be able to identify him. That is the partnership dream.

Max: Get a room you two.

Leroy: He is a room. He is all the rooms.

🔗 permalink: He is a room. He is all the rooms.

Leroy and Maz's relationship really took a hit, maybe not in their eyes but in mine. This is a great reminder that they are still not that close but why does it feel like Leroy couldn't be bothered to make an effort?

Max doesn't come off as pushy as Leroy sees him sometimes, and then Max still seems to be the one struggling to form a connection.

Why is Leroy not willing to spend time with Max? They have fun on missions and they get along, there has to be some disconnect that we are missing.

The Exorcist - FOX

It would be wonderful to see that Leroy and Max issue shine more going forward, especially if those two try to work on their relationship directly. Their time in the field just isn't transfering over to their personal time and that should be resolved.

The core of the show continues to be the interactions between Max and Leroy, it can only thrive as much as their friendship does. An intense shift though where Max pulls back more would be interesting.

Leroy is always the one taking a step back, but if Max did it it might be off guard enough for those two to come back to one another better and closer.

Max and Leroy get assigned to the set of a TV show where none of the paranormal activity that the actors explore is real until they visit an abandoned hospital.

They go undercover to make sure these actors don't do anything stupid or get involved with something paranormal. One of the actors turns out to be Max's student and things get awkward. Leroy and Max struggle with their current jobs in different ways, with Leroy thinking he deserves more perks.

The actors get trapped in another dimension and Max and Leory end up going in to save them. Leroy gets a shirt as a perk and Max/Leroy get played by other people on the show.

Meanwhile, Barry wants a chair but is warned beforehand about asking the woman who controls the budget. He pushes for an expensive one to be delivered the same day and to get back at him she pulls thinks like coffee, toilet paper, and other necessary portions of the office. She also makes sure the whole office knows that Barry is at fault for that.

In the end Barry is happy with his new bean bag chair instead because the office isn't happy with what he caused because he was selfish.

Max and Leroy complete a mission and then have lunch where Max says they should hang out that night but Leroy says he doesn't feel like it.

Meanwhile, Annie is left in charge while Captain Lafrey isn't there and she introduces the office to AI named Sam. He is meant to handle everything or be able to assist but he isn't all friendly for long. He tells Max to get him specific codes to the system or else, and then when Max tries to warn the rest of the office no one believes him.

Sam creates an online narrative that shines a bad light on Max. He also sets it up so Max overhears that Leroy is friends with another guy in the office, even lying to Max when he spends time with him instead.

Annie and Leroy buy into Sam trying to destory Max's reputation until Leroy sees that Sam is playing a fake video for them. He goes to interrogate Max but really tries to figure out a way to talk to him without Sam hearing. Annie pieces it together too and Captain Lafrey comes back just in time to contain the situation.

Annie tries to resign but is told how much she is needed there. Now the team needs to figure out who set up Sam.
