Who says comedies don’t have substance anymore?

Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 7 had a lot of heart. It perfectly blended comedy and drama while telling an emotional and relatable story.

Even better, it gave Connor something more to do than pass through the kitchen, making quirky demands that everyone rolled their eyes at. He’s not the butt of jokes anymore — he’s finally a full-fledged character with hopes, dreams, and frustrations with his relationships with his parents.

I’m not exactly sure why Georgie and Jim decided to take a road trip.

It had something to do with that Mustang they were trying to fix, but I missed what it was.

Whatever their mission was, they didn’t accomplish it on-screen, but that’s okay. The point of the road trip was for Connor to discover an ally in Georgie.

I could relate to Connor’s frustration with his parents.

Jim hadn’t tried to steer Connor toward a job or career path that might interest him; he just assumed that because Connor is different (aka neurodivergent in the 1990s), he’d never be able to support himself.

The good news for Connor is that the Internet revolution is just around the corner, which will lead to all sorts of jobs that weren’t possible before, so he may be able to carve out a career path by the time he’s in his mid-30s.

Of course, if he’s working from home online, his parents might not have any idea what he’s doing and continue to worry about what will happen to him after they’re gone, but at least he’ll have options that he doesn’t have now.

I totally get where they’re coming from, but I also strongly relate to how Connor felt.

I’ve been on the receiving end of conversations like that.

Even though the people who are worried are well-meaning, the inadvertent message is that you’re broken in some unnameable way because you aren’t able to do things the way you’re “supposed” to.

(2024 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc./Troy Harvey)

In the 1990s, Connor’s parents may have been aware he was different in some ways, but it’s unlikely they’d realize he was autistic or otherwise neurodivergent.

That makes it even more frustrating. When you’re expected to understand things that you just don’t understand because your brain is wired differently, you feel like there’s a code to success that you can’t crack and begin to wonder what the hell is wrong with you.

(This is also likely why Young Sheldon had Sheldon be evaluated and determined to be neurotypical when he very clearly is not — there wasn’t nearly as much awareness about autism then, and anyone who was able to communicate verbally was assumed to be neurotypical even if they were “weird.”)

Connor wanted so badly for his father to be proud of him or at least happy with him that he took his instructions to get a job literally and tried to become the busboy in the diner they stopped to eat at. Then, he was confused about why that wasn’t an acceptable solution.

Georgie’s Acceptance Of Connor Came From Growing Up With Sheldon

Georgie had a rough time growing up with Sheldon. He was pegged as the “stupid brother” while everyone made a big deal out of Sheldon’s intelligence, so it’s natural that he didn’t try to understand what it was like for Sheldon to be so different than most people.

He told Mandy he regretted not trying to understand, and though he didn’t want to pick up the phone and rectify that situation, it made him try harder with Connor.

That was why Connor shocked Audrey by saying that Georgie was a “great person.”

Georgie didn’t think Connor wearing headphones to block out the world while on the road trip was weird or unacceptable. While Jim saw that as yet another reason Connor was impossible to relate to, Georgie saw that was just Connor being Connor.

Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 7 Made It Clear What Audrey’s Real Problem Is

The scenes with Audrey and Mandy helped humanize Audrey.

She doesn’t like Georgie for the same reason that All In The Family‘s Archie Bunker didn’t like his son-in-law: she sees Georgie as an obstacle to her child having the life she deserves and a loser who can’t support his family on his own.

Audrey’s surprising dream of getting involved in politics never came true, so she wants Mandy to have the freedom to make her own dreams into realities. Having a baby young and being tied to an even younger father wasn’t supposed to be part of the plan.

Ironically, Audrey didn’t understand why Mandy wanted gender-neutral decorations for CeeCee’s nursery even though Mandy only wanted CeeCee to grow up to realize she could become whoever and whatever she wanted to become.

Audrey and Mandy have this in common, but Mandy is so busy resisting Audrey’s ideas about what her life should be like, and Audrey is so busy imposing her opinions that neither one of them realizes it.

Despite Heavy Themes, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 7 Was Hilarious

The best thing about “An Old Mustang” was that it had heart and substance without losing sight of the fact that it’s supposed to be a comedy.

Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 7 had several hilarious moments.

Audrey: The first night you slept in your own room, I cried.

Mandy: You did no.

Audrey: Of course I did. You were my sweet little angel and I loved you. Then you learned to talk and ruined everything.

There were some great one-liners and jokey conversations, but my favorite was the sequence in which Georgie negotiates a higher price for the water pump than Jim had planned on paying, unaware that the “other guy” he is competing with is Jim.

The two of them screwed themselves out of the original, low price with all that unnecessary negotiation, and I couldn’t stop laughing about it.

Random Thoughts

  • It really is a shame that Georgie and Mandy will eventually break up. Georgie seems such an important part of the McAllister family that I feel Jim and Connor should get him in the eventual divorce.
  • No Ruben on Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 7. I didn’t miss him.
  • The laugh track/studio audience seemed muted today, which made it much more tolerable.
  • I almost forgot this takes place in the 1990s and was confused by Audrey’s description of Friends until I remembered.

The worst thing about Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage is knowing the central relationship is doomed before the series even begins.

The Big Bang Theory locked in Georgie’s two divorces, so sooner or later, the young couple will implode.

That foreknowledge dampens the humor because it is impossible to miss the hints of heartbreak to come. On Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 6, we got a huge insight into what will go wrong.

Georgie And Mandy Avoided A Trope-y Trap While Missing The Real Problem

The sitcom could have easily fallen into tired TV tropes once Georgie met an attractive woman who needed a flat tire.

There have been thousands of variations of sitcom plots involving cheating, even though it’s not a funny subject.

Early sitcoms could only feature the humorous misunderstanding version of the cheating trope, of course, but ever since Archie Bunker slept with that waitress on my least favorite episode of All In The Family, most sitcoms followed suit.

Fortunately, Georgie and Mandy didn’t do that. It wouldn’t have made sense for Georgie to cheat on Mandy when he’s so committed to making this marriage for the sake of the accidental baby work.

Plus, he probably knows how George Sr and Brenda’s fling on Young Sheldon hurt his parents’ marriage, which would make him not want to repeat the same mistake.

I’m equally thrilled that Mandy never once thought he was cheating.

It was so refreshing for an overworked wife who barely has any time alone with her husband to trust him when he said he wanted to go to church instead of assuming he was having an affair or trying to stop him from doing what he wanted to do.

(CBS/Sonja Flemming)

I wouldn’t have blamed Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 7 if they had gone the misunderstanding route.

The idea of Georgie acting like he’s having an affair (dressing up, going to “church” every chance he gets, spending time with an attractive woman who he claims is only a friend) only for Mandy to discover he’s handing out business cards at a church group would have been pretty damn funny.

Still, that trope wore out its welcome about 200 sitcom appearances ago, so I’m glad that “A Regular Samaritan” skipped it.

Georgie using the church as a networking group was ridiculous, which was what made it so fun.

After all, what church would allow a member to use Bible study group as an opportunity to encourage everyone to buy tires from his shop?

Valerie comes into the tire shop where Ruben likes her on Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage Season 1 Episode 6
(CBS/Sonja Fleming)

Additionally, he turned the tables on the so-called prosperity church he was attending when he did that.

These churches are often scams. Parishioners are encouraged to show their faith by donating all their worldly possessions to the church and are promised they will receive back what they put in tenfold.

In these types of churches, the only one who gets rich is usually the leader, who lives large off all those donations while the givers go without necessities because of their sacrifice.

But this prosperity church was all about letting Georgie fleece them instead, which was deliciously ironic.

(CBS/Sonja Flemming)

I used to think that the reason Georgie and Mandy’s marriage doesn’t last is that the age difference is insurmountable in the end.

Mandy is often embarrassed by her younger husband or thinks his behavior is immature, while Georgie jumps at the chance to be with people his own age despite his loyalty to Mandy.

No matter how much they love each other, they stay together in part out of obligation to the new life they created, and that’s always going to create doubt and resentment, at least to an extent.

However, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 6 demonstrated that that wasn’t the biggest problem the young couple faces.

The issue for them, as it is for many couples, is money — or, more specifically, not having enough of it.

Money was the reason that Mandy had to take extra shifts at the restaurant and Georgie had to answer towing calls in the middle of the night.

Georgie helps Valerie with a flat tire on Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage Season 1 Episode 6
(CBS/Sonja Flemming)

It’s also the reason Georgie wanted to go to church in the first place. He was promised monetary blessings, and he needed more than the $11 he could win off Jim playing cards before Jim gave up.

(As a side note, Jim should have known better since Georgie has beaten them all at cards in other episodes.)

Of course, the money problems and other relationship problems for these two are intertwined.

Having a baby out of wedlock means that CeeCee was born before the young couple was financially ready for her, and Georgie’s job options are limited because he didn’t finish high school.

The financial situation means they have to live with Audrey and Jim, which is a constant source of stress and conflict because Audrey hates Georgie and Georgie gives as good as he gets.

(CBS/Sonja Flemming)

No wonder both of them will do whatever they have to for money! But that means limited time together, which can be a relationship killer.

All of these taken together leads to the relationship implosion, but hopefully not for a long time,

First we need to milk as many laughs as possible out of the situation the couple finds themselves in.

Odds And Ends On Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 6

(CBS/Sonja Flemming)
  • Weirdly, Connor was not part of this episode, which is too bad. It would have cut the tension on Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 6 for him to make one of his random comments during a tense moment.
  • While I don’t condone violence in real life, Mandy punching Valerie in the nose was incredibly satisfying
  • I thought it was strange that Audrey was so desperate for CeeCee to be baptized that she secretly did it (pulling an Archie Bunker!), yet didn’t want to go to church.
  • I’m glad Ruben spreading rumors about Georgie and Valerie didn’t seriously damage anything. If Jim hadn’t believed Georgie when Georgie said he was only interested in Mandy, that could have been a serious problem.

TV is a powerful medium for breaking stereotypes. We've found 11 characters changing the narrative. Are there more?

Television is one of the most powerful mediums available for social change.

Through characters and stories we love, we can help heal the divide and show people that we are all human and all want similar things.

That may seem like small comfort at a time when racism, homo/transphobia, sexism, and anti-Semitism are at an all-time high. Even so, let’s celebrate characters changing the narrative and helping make a better, less prejudiced world.

FBI’s Omar Adom “O.A.” Zidan Is The First Egyptian-Born Lead Character on A Police Procedural

OA holds a gun
(Bennett Raglin/CBS)

When I think about characters changing the narrative, O.A. is always the first one that comes to mind.

Unfortunately, many peace-loving Muslims get blamed for terrorist activity related to conflict in the Middle East, and that’s been reflected in our television shows for a very long time.

Before O.A. was introduced on FBI Season 1 Episode 1. there were few Muslim characters on TV who were not either guilty of terrorism or being accused of it based on credible evidence.

Sure, Law & Order: SVU had a couple of episodes about Muslim women who were raped and killed because they didn’t subscribe to radical Islam, but guess who was always the culprit? Their Muslim fathers or brothers.

That changed seven seasons ago when O.A. was introduced. He is the first and so far only Middle Eastern-born Muslim character to be a leading man in any show, and he’s also an FBI agent.

His loyalty to the United States is never in doubt. Before becoming a field agent in an office that specializes in counter-terrorism, he served in the Army and did two tours in Iraq that left him with PTSD.

OA at dinner
(Bennett Raglin/CBS)

Like so many of our veterans, he has PTSD because of his experiences, though he has kept it under control enough to become one of the best, most trusted agents in the New York Field Office.

We won’t talk about his relationship with Clay on FBI Season 7, which is leading him in the wrong direction because it’s beside the point.

OA is one of the strongest characters who changes the narrative of the division and hatred that encompass the United States and the world.

It’s sad that even within the confines of the fictional FBI on TV, OA sometimes has to prove that he’s equally loyal to his country or equally capable of being objective when the targets of investigations are Muslim extremists.

Still, he defies stereotypes simply by continuing to exist and offers some much-needed representation.

Heartstopper’s Elle Argent Is One Of The Characters Changing The Narrative About Transgender Women Of Color

Elle in a flowered crop top with her hand in her short pocket on a beautiful college campus on Heartstopper
(Netflix/Samuel Dore)

LGBTQ+ representation on TV is in decline precisely when we need it not to be, and that’s doubly true for the transgender community.

It’s especially important to showcase Black transgender women and other transgender women of color who experience the intersections of transphobia, racism, and misogyny.

I’d like there to be more American transgender people of all races and gender identities on TV, but in the meantime, the UK series Heartstopper‘s Elle is my favorite example of how transgender characters are changing the narrative about who they are.

Elle is a transgender teenager who is mostly accepted as the woman she is.

Elle and Darcy having fun outside on Heartstopper
(Netflix/Samuel Dore)

Throughout Heartstopper’s three seasons, she has grown from a shy loner who was afraid cis girls in her new school wouldn’t accept her to an out and proud transgender artist who has friends both in and outside of the transgender community.

Sometimes, Heartstopper gets criticized for showing LGBTQ+ kids being happy and mostly free of hate-fueled drama, but we need stories like these.

We need characters like Elle who are supported by their parents and friends and who want to be seen as more than a statistic or a label.

Elle sends the message that you CAN be happy if you’re transgender despite all the hate in the world.

Transgender kids have an unacceptably high suicide rate. They NEED hope. Elle gives it.

Yes, she was upset during Heartstopper Season 3 when a podcast host asked her for an interview about her art and then bombarded her with questions about whether trans girls should be allowed to use the women’s restroom and other transphobic nonsense.

She struggled with that a bit and needed her friends’ help to overcome the depression and keep moving on. But even that was a positive message, showing that in reality, it doesn’t HAVE to be over because of setbacks like this.

Good Trouble’s Davia Moss Explored How Fatphobia Affects Plus-Sized People (And Formerly Plus-Sized People)

Sassy Davia- Tall - Good Trouble Season 5 Episode 12
(Disney/Troy Harvey)

Good Trouble is no longer on, but it deserves an honorable mention anyway.

This show did so much good in terms of characters changing the narrative around all sorts of identities. I could fill this list with almost everybody on it.

I chose Davia because there is not enough discussion of plus-sized women and the prejudices they face on TV.

The body-size movement began when Camryn Manheim first came onto the scene as a proudly plus-sized actress who did not intend to lose weight to get roles, but Davia is the most modern example I can think of.

Wine and Tears - Tall - Good Trouble Season 5 Episode 20
(Disney/Carlos Lopez-Calleja (Freeform))

Davia experienced body shaming both as a plus-size person and later when she lost weight.

When formerly plus-sized people become not-so-plus-sized, they experience a different flavor of prejudice, with people constantly telling them how good they look and commenting on their weight loss without knowing the details.

It’s annoying and, in some cases, upsetting if the person loses weight because they have a serious illness that they don’t want to broadcast to the world.

People should not be commenting on others’ body size, period, especially strangers, and Davia demonstrated why that is hurtful whether or not you’re a plus-sized person.

Additionally, she demonstrated that there is a lot more to a person than how big they are or aren’t. She was one of the most well-rounded characters on Good Trouble, with a lot of flaws but a big heart and the intention to help others.

The Irrational’s Alec Mercer Is A Black Role Model And Trauma Survivor

Alec sitting behind a desk wearing a hat on The Irrational Season 2 Episode 2
(NBC/James Dittiger)

The Irrational is busy offering characters changing the narrative all over the place. It was a hard choice between Alec and his sister, Kylie, who is a strong representative of Black queerness.

Alec is one of my favorite characters in television history for many reasons. I find his commitment to rationality over emotion inspiring and his determination to live his life to the fullest despite the trauma he’s suffered even more so.

I’m also stoked about Alec because he is a Black college professor and consultant to the FBI.

The consultant part has been done before, but we all know that Black men are underrepresented in teaching across the board, on TV, and in reality.

Marisa and Alec sitting together at a meeting with someone on The Irrational Season 2 Episode 2
(NBC/James Dittiger)

Alec is a successful Black man who teaches and inspires others.

His college classroom is always full, and he uses interesting and creative experiments to make points about neuroscience, which isn’t always the easiest topic to understand.

Alec is also a trauma survivor and is changing the narrative on that, too.

Like many survivors, he is very strong in some areas of his life and not very functional in others.

It’s doubly powerful to have him as a representative of trauma survivorship because he knows the human brain inside and out and understands the ways that he sometimes fails him, yet he is powerless to do anything about it when flashbacks or other aspects of trauma hit him.

Found’s Bella Dismantles Stereotypes Around Nonverbal People

Bella cries while reading the "interview" with Gabi on Found Season 2 Episode 6
(NBC/Screenshot)

Trauma can cause people to become selectively mute. That means that they are unable to speak in some or all situations.

That’s not usually what trauma looks like on TV, but Found is different.

This season contains flashbacks of Bella (who chose the name Lacey as an adult) struggling as a seven-year-old child who had recently escaped Sir’s clutches.

Among other things, Bella does not speak.

I love this story because I am passionate about confronting and eliminating the ableist belief that verbal ability has ANYTHING to do with intelligence or competence.

Bella with headphones on while her mother talks to Gabi on Found Season 2 Episode 6
(NBC/Screenshot)

Bella communicates non-verbally very well.

Her facial expressions and other body language are so perfect that an autistic person like me, who struggles with interpreting body language, knows exactly what she is feeling at any given moment.

She can still read, write, draw, and think. She simply cannot speak.

Bella grows up to be a woman who has reclaimed her voice and refused to lose it again, but that doesn’t change the fact that she is one of a very small number of characters changing the narrative around nonverbal children, if not the only one.

Brilliant Minds’ Oliver Wolf Is The Best Of Several Characters Changing The Narrative Around Neurodivergence

Dr. Wolf's Greenhouse-Brilliant Minds Season 1 Episode 1
(Rafy/NBC)

There are many more autistic and other neurodivergent characters in TV Land than there used to be, but that doesn’t mean there’s a hell of a lot of accurate representation.

Brilliant Minds‘ Oliver Wolf is the best neurodivergent representative. He is a doctor who is respected by some and seen as a nuisance by others.

He has face blindness, which is a neurodivergent condition in which a person cannot recognize people by looking at their faces.

This is far different from the usual neurodivergent character. There is a lot more to neurodivergence than autism and ADHD, not that those conditions are generally portrayed properly, either.

Wolf’s neurodivergent traits are carefully interwoven with his past trauma and his fear of intimacy because of that trauma.

That’s also an important distinction because far too many shows are interested in the question of “Will this person succeed even though they are neurodivergent?” rather than showing the character as being more than a diagnosis.

Nichols and Wolf on a case.
(Rafy/NBC)

Wolf does double-duty representation-wise because he is also gay.

Neither of these identities is centered to the degree that we lose sight of him as a unique, fascinating individual who has compensated for his difficulties as best as he can to create enormous professional success.

I also appreciate how his sexual orientation and neurodivergence likely contributed to his trauma.

No one could predict his dad’s mental illness and subsequent death, but Wolf would have experienced some trauma even if those things hadn’t happened because of who he is and how he sees the world.

Blue Bloods’ Jamie Reagan Demonstrates That Men Can Be Empathetic and Sensitive

Jamie Gets a Dressing Down - Blue Bloods Season 14 Episode 9
(CBS / 2023 CBS Broadcasting)

At first glance, it might seem strange to choose a Blue Bloods character as an example of changing the narrative.

Blue Bloods skews more conservative on the political spectrum than most shows, so an argument can be made that it changes the narrative around conservatives all being evil and selfish, which is also important in these divided times.

Jamie has always been my favorite, with Henry as a close second. He not only went into police work for the right reasons but is especially good at building rapport with witnesses and suspects.

In the early seasons, Jamie demonstrated more than once that he had a gift for helping talk down people who were having a mental health crisis.

Jamie and Joe Share a Beat - Blue Bloods Season 14 Episode 9
(CBS / 2023 CBS Broadcasting )

One moment that sticks in my mind is when an autistic man began causing trouble at a store, throwing things around and generally being belligerent, and Jamie was able to peacefully subdue him by using his understanding of the man’s thought processes.

This was a man with limited verbal skills who respected Jamie and wanted to be like him, so Jamie got him to put his hands behind his head by modeling it, and the man cooperated.

He was arrested without the use of force, which would not have happened had Jamie not been there.

Jamie uses this type of sensitivity and empathy on the job all the time, though, in later seasons, he is in a higher position and doesn’t work with the public as much.

His empathy changes the narrative about what it means to be masculine and demonstrates that cops don’t HAVE to be modern-day cowboys.

Law & Order: Organized Crime’s Jet Slootmaekers Shoots Down Stereotypes About Female Coders

Stopping the Drug Trade - Law & Order: Organized Crime Season 4 Episode 9
(NBC / Virginia Sherwood)

Jet has been my favorite on Law & Order: Organized Crime since it began.

Jet is a computer expert, but she is far from a nerd.

She’s smart, sardonic, and seemingly fearless. She’s a cop and a computer expert, and she knows how to use a gun better than almost anybody.

In short, Jet would fit in on any modern Western… except she also knows computers.

Jet Causes Tension - Law & Order: Organized Crime Season 4 Episode 2
(NBC//Will Hart)

Jet’s one weakness, if you can call it that, is that she struggles in relationships.

That’s understandable. Women who are as bright and assertive as her often have a hard time finding love, and in her case, she’s too afraid of commitment for it to work.

That’s worse in the later seasons because Jet falls hard for two men who die. That’ll screw anyone up.

Still, few female characters change the narrative of what women in traditionally masculine careers are like as much as Jet does.

Homicide: Life On The Street’s Tim Bayliss Is Still One of The Best Representatives of Bisexual Men 30 Years Later

Bayliss argues with Pembleton on Homicide: Life On The Streets
(NBC/Screenshot)

Look, this might be an old show, but Homicide: Life on The Street is on Peacock, so you can still watch it.

It also has the first bisexual male character on TV. Starting with Homicide: Life On The Street Season 6, Bayliss explored his sexuality after realizing he was attracted to a male suspect.

Bayliss tried dating both men and women, struggled with the question of whether he was straight or gay, and ultimately concluded he was neither.

That was radical then and equally radical today when we still have people insisting that bi characters are really in-the-closet gay characters.

Homicide’s final season wasn’t worth watching in most respects, but Bayliss’s determination to be openly bisexual, even though the police department thought that was “unprofessional,” made up for a lot of other non-interesting stories.

Chicago Med’s Hannah Asher Changes The Narrative On Drug Addiction

Hannah helps a patient on Chicago Med Season 10 Episode 6
(NBC/George Burns, Jr)

Drug addiction stories are a dime a dozen on TV.

Far too often, though, it’s treated in a stereotypical manner. Whether someone is addicted to alcohol or hard drugs, the most popular storyline for them is the relapse story, followed by the overzealous AA meeting attendee story.

Addiction is a far more complicated issue than that, but you wouldn’t know it from most TV shows.

Chicago Med‘s Hannah Asher is different.

Hannah asking a patient where it hurts on Chicago Med Season 10 Episode 3
(NBC/George Burns, Jr)

Hannah recently went through something that could have easily triggered a relapse.

She lost a patient soon after the baby was delivered and blamed herself. Guilt, shame, and pain are powerful emotions that often drive people back toward addictive behavior.

Add in the fact that Hannah’s relationship with her new boyfriend was falling apart, and there was a chance she could lose her job because Lenox thought that it was unnecessary to employ a full-time OBGYN, and you have a recipe for spiraling out of control.

However, Hannah didn’t relapse. There aren’t any better examples of characters changing the narrative around addiction than that!

Hannah’s addiction is part of who she is but doesn’t define her, and unlike most of the people with addiction issues on TV, she is self-aware enough to realize when she’s at risk and take action to protect herself.

That makes her a role model and dismantles the stereotype that relapses “just happen” and nobody can do anything to prevent them.

Georgie And Mandy’s First Marriage’s Georgie Cooper Dismantles Stereotypes About Country Boys In An Interesting Way

Georgie reading to Cici on Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage Season 1 Episode 4
(CBS/Robert Voets)

Throughout Young Sheldon, Georgie was depicted as the “stupid” (or at least ignorant) brother.

However, there is a lot more to Georgie than that, and now that he’s gotten his own show (Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage), it’s easier to see.

Georgie was never book-smart. School wasn’t his thing.

But he has a head for business and is gifted mechanically, skills that were never emphasized when he was growing up in the shadow of his younger brother.

Georgie standing with his hands outstretched in confusion on Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage Season 1 Episode 3
(Warner Brothers Entertainment/Troy Harvey)

We need characters to change the narrative of what intelligence is.

There are many kids who fall through the cracks because they would shine in trade schools or in the arts but are not academically minded.

This doesn’t mean that people don’t need to learn the basics, but not everyone needs advanced degrees, and that should be okay.

As a bonus, Georgie’s intelligence in areas other than academics also dismantles the idea that Southerners, particularly Southern men, are all idiots, which can only be a good thing in this overly divided country.

Georgie and Mandy’s relationship is always going to be challenging, and not just because we know that it ultimately implodes.

One of the things this series excels at is being funny while exploring the reasons their marriage doesn’t last, making some of their conflicts painful even though the specifics are hilarious.

Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 4 tackled the couple’s need for a social life and the problems that come with their age difference. Well done!

Many First-Time Parents Could Relate To Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 4

Georgie and Mandy dealt with a dilemma that hasn’t changed much for parents in 2024: how to have a social life outside the house when they have a young child at home.

I almost forgot this is a nostalgia piece because other than Mandy not having a smartphone to check in with Georgie, the story could have taken place in the present day.

Interestingly, Georgie didn’t mind staying at home and hanging out with Mandy’s parents. It was only Mandy who was going stir-crazy at first.

Mandy: I can’t believe I spent all night playing bridge with my parents. That makes me 100 years old.

Georgie: I guess that makes me 89.

Playing games with Mandy’s parents makes Georgie feel accepted even though we all know Audrey still disapproves of him and sees him as a little boy compared to her daughter.

Plus, playing bridge is one way Audrey can indulge her competitive side, which makes her more prone to appreciate Georgie instead of being annoyed by him.

Mandy puts her hand on Georgie's shoulder in a bar on Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage Season 1 Episode 4
(CBS/Robert Voets)

But Mandy needs time away from being a wife and mother, and Audrey gets on her last nerve, which intensifies her need for space.

I felt bad for her when she realized that her new bestie had a son the same age as Georgie. It only reinforced her awareness of their age gap and made her feel awkward.

That’s going to be an issue until Georgie passes the 25-year-old mark. By then, the age gap won’t be as noticeable, and nobody will care that he’s several years younger than his wife.

But at this stage, Audrey isn’t the only one who sees Georgie as far younger and not quite an adult, and that’s doubly true if other women Mandy’s age have sons Georgie’s age.

Of course, Mandy isn’t THAT much older, so her friend likely had a baby young and should be able to relate to Mandy’s accidental pregnancy.

(CBS/Robert Voets)

Still, Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 4 nicely illustrates how awkward the age difference makes socializing.

Many people find it strange, and Mandy is embarrassed by the entire situation, which makes it more awkward whenever it comes up.

To her, Beth having custody of her teenage son after a messy divorce seems far more “normal” than getting pregnant with the child of a 17-year-old who you thought was older and then marrying him when he came of age.

Georgie’s Role As A Father Puts Him In A Different Stage of Life Than His Peers

Socializing was just as difficult for Georgie but for a different reason.

He wasn’t much older than Todd and his friends, but he’s been forced to be a lot more responsible because of his daughter’s birth and the death of his own father.

That made him young enough to want to ride dirt bikes with his friends, leading to a hilarious but poignant exchange with Mandy, who felt it was too dangerous.

Georgie: Todd invited me to ride dirt bikes with him tomorrow.

Mandy: You have a child! It’s too dangerous.

Georgie: So I’ll wear a helmet.

Mandy: You’re not doing it.

Georgie: Todd’s mom lets him do it!

That exchange reinforced the difficulties of the age difference more than anything else, but after Georgie insisted on going out with Todd, his responsible side kicked in.

Georgie’s insistence on the kids not drinking and driving on Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 4 was right.

That was a great example of a public service announcement that doesn’t overwhelm the audience with its message.

It came naturally out of Georgie’s exchange with the kids. It also showed that he couldn’t quite relate to them because he was a father as well as a teenager.

When he took the kids home, he had to tell them not to call him “Mr. Cooper,” which was a poignant reminder of the stage of life he’s in that they aren’t.

Georgie’s situation puts him squarely in the middle between the world of adulthood and that of teenage life, making it harder for him to find his place.

Finally, A Connor Story That Makes Sense

Thank you, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 4, for a reasonable Connor subplot.

Rather than being the punchline to a joke, Connor had an entire amusing storyline. It wasn’t anything serious, but it was great.

He insisted on playing 20 Questions, and in typical Connor style, counted questions such as “Are you sure we’re going to have any idea what you’re talking about?” as one of the 20 questions.

This side story gave him more depth than he had before, which is a big win, even if it was annoying that he never revealed the identity of the mystery object he was thinking of.

It’s weird rooting for a couple you know from the outset will fail.

Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage is a brilliant family comedy, but even the title reveals that this marriage is doomed.

Every episode mixes in more clues as to what goes wrong with the comic situation of the week, and Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 3 gave the biggest hints yet.

Mandy’s Credit Card Debt Secret Was A Symptom of Problems To Come

The episode’s focus on Mandy’s credit card debt was a fairly typical plot that both sitcoms and drams us and always have, going back to classics like I Love Lucy.

However, this one went in an atypical direction.

Instead of the story being about Georgie getting in trouble with his credit card or Mandy running up a bill on it without telling him, his getting the card was a vehicle for the big revelation that Mandy had $12,000 in credit card debt — and some of it came from an ex-boyfriend’s medical bills.

As an aside, were medical bills as bad in the 1990s as they are now? Apparently, that huge debt came from a sprained wrist.

Anyway, Georgie fumed that Mandy had not told him this before they were married, and in a sense, he had a point.

Getting married could make him equally liable for Mandy’s debt, assuming it wasn’t more than seven years old. (Yes, thirty years ago, we had the same laws stating that credit card debt was supposed to be expunged from your record after seven years.)

Still, Georgie’s anger that Mandy and her parents hadn’t told him about this debt was out of proportion to the offense. There was no reason this should have been so important to him that he got Ruben involved!

The guy’s Georgie’s worst enemy, so if he can find a way to use this against Georgie, he will.

Fortunately, so far all he did was ask if Mandy’s secret is that her sister is really her mother. She doesn’t have a sister, so we’re safe there.

Confiding in Ruben was only the first bad choice Georgie made on Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 3. He browbeat Jim into secretly giving him the name of Mandy’s ex so he could collect the money, and the two of them agreed not to tell her.

Jim: If I tell you, it has to be a secret.

Georgie: I won’t say a word. Cross my heart and hope to die, stick a needle in my eye.

Jim: This ain’t the playground. Just say you promise.

Considering Georgie and Mandy agreed not to keep any more secrets before lying down with their backs to each other and panicked-stricken looks on their faces, it’s safe to say this issue is going to come back to bite them at some point.

The other big problem, of course, is the age difference.

As people get older, age gaps matter less.

Still, the number of jokes about Georgie being so much younger than Mandy, the repeated refrain of someone stating he’s just a kid compared to her, and even the ex-boyfriend thinking Georgie looked awfully young suggest that their being in different stages of life will eventually do them in.

Hopefully, that won’t be for a long while because the show can’t continue if they get divorced, and Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage just got a full season order.

Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 3 Proved The Series Can Work Without Young Sheldon Characters

This was the first episode without any crossover appearances from Young Sheldon, though there was a reference to that stupid Season 7 storyline about Meemaw getting in trouble for running an illegal gambling ring.

I missed Missy, but the episode worked fine without any Coopers, and that’s a good thing.

Spinoffs need to be able to stand on their own.

It’s good to have familiar characters in the first few episodes, but if a show depends on those characters to be watchable yet is supposed to be about other people altogether, there’s a huge problem.

In this case, everything flowed smoothly, the jokes were funny, and the episode kept my interest, so Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 3 passed its first major test.

Georgie’s Visit To Mandy’s Ex Might Have Been A Mistake, But It Was Funny

Georgie wasn’t going to get any satisfaction from Mandy’s ex, nor was he ever going to get a penny of that money back.

I knew the check would bounce, and the guy’s idea that he could get the repayment money back by robbing the bank was silly, even if we did get a cameo from Days of Our Lives‘ Julie Dove just a month after she wrapped up her run there.

The interactions between Georgie and Mandy’s ex were some of the best comedy of the hour, though.

I especially liked the guy being a “recovering alcoholic” who still drank, but only beer, and how easily he fell for Georgie’s lie that Georgie and Mandy lived out of state.

Jim and Audrey in bed on Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage Season 1 Episode 2
(CBS/Robert Voets)

Those scenes also offered some more insight into why Audrey is so skeptical of Georgie.

The guy before was not very bright, drank too much, and ran up Mandy’s credit card debt, so Mandy’s choice to marry the high school dropout with whom she accidentally conceived a child must seem like more of the same.

Georgie isn’t stupid, but his strengths are not academic, and the fact that he didn’t finish high school makes it seem even more to Audrey that Mandy is repeating the mistakes of the past with a different but similar guy who will never amount to much in the world.

Connor Is Starting To Be More Well-Rounded

Connor’s appearance on Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 EPisode 3 was much improved (except for the part about him wanting to eat his food standing in the corner, which was a quirk for the sake of having one.)

Connor makes a request on Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage Season 1 Episode 2
(CBS/Robert Voets)

Connor writing to Jay Leno because they share a birthday and he is interested in Leno’s band gave him something more substantial to his character than just saying and doing strange things.

The answering machine message was a nice touch, too. That was funny without making fun of Connor for being different.

He also displayed some empathy for Georgie after Georgie and Mandy’s fight, even if he didn’t fully know what was going on, which dismantled the idea that he was just weird and lost in his own world.

Still, it’s clear he’s supposed to be a replacement for Sheldon, and even these improvements don’t make that work.

He needs to be developed as a character in his own right rather than being Sheldon 2.0.

There’s a big win for the latest show in The Big Bang Theory franchise.

Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage just scored a full-season order from CBS, which means that the latest spinoff will be on our screens all the way through May.

CBS hasn’t told us yet exactly how many episodes they’ve green-lit, but their enthusiasm for the show is great news.

Georgie And Mandy’s Success Wasn’t Guaranteed, But It’s a Huge Hit

CBS took a risk with Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage that I wasn’t sure would pay off.

Although both The Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon were smash hits for the network, it wasn’t clear how much Sheldon Cooper had to do with that.

Young Sheldon was developed as a prequel about the socially awkward genius. It detailed his childhood in Texas, and his interactions with the family that loved him but didn’t understand him were a huge part of why that show worked so well.

Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, however, was the first show in the franchise to not feature Sheldon at all, as Sheldon had gone off to CalTech in the Young Sheldon finale. I loved Sheldon, so I wasn’t sure how interesting a show that didn’t feature him would be.

And if everyone else felt the way I did, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage would be the first Big Bang Theory spinoff to flop, as people would turn it off quickly. But I was wrong, and despite a rough start to the premiere, the show is funny, heartfelt, and well worth watching.

It’s also been a phenomenal success, with 10.6 million viewers watching the premiere across platforms and the series’ ratings for online views being up 72% from Young Sheldon’s final season premiere.

CBS’ Enthusiastic Response Is Good News For The Future of Georgie And Mandy’s First Marriage

Most of Young Sheldon Season 7 was a backdoor pilot to Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage.

That was annoying, but it paid off because it got everyone super excited about the spinoff.

The only thing missing so far is some news about what happened to Meemaw’s boyfriend, Dale, but now that we have a full-season order, I’m hopeful they’ll address that.

Still, ratings success isn’t always a guarantee that networks will keep shows on the air.

CBS canceled several of its most popular shows in 2024, breaking a lot of people’s hearts by canceling Blue Bloods.

(CBS/Robert Voets)

However, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage got an enthusiastic response from CBS that makes me feel it’s safe for a long time to come:

With the resounding success of The Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon, we were instantly on board when Chuck, Steven and Steve brought us the idea to further explore this world through Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage. The enthusiastic audience reception has demonstrated the enormous appeal of these characters and we can’t wait to see all of the hilarious fun this season will undoubtedly deliver.

– Amy Reisenbach, CBS President

.This type of enthusiasm from CBS could mean it gets an early renewal like Matlock did, now that it’s gotten over the first hurdle and received a full-season order.

The full season order also means that the series will have plenty of time to establish and explore the family dynamics on Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage.

We know that the couple will ultimately divorce, but with a full season — and hopefully many more — the writers won’t have to rush through the story of how their marriage implodes and can continue planting seeds for Georgie and Mandy’s ultimate breakup while delivering heartfelt, stellar comedy.

Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage Season 1 Episode 2 came much closer to what we expected from the latest Big Bang Theory spinoff. Our review!

It’s still not Young Sheldon, and it can’t be, but Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 2 was a lot closer to what I’ve been missing.

Maybe it was the Missy subplot or Georgie talking to George’s grave, but the second installment of this new spinoff felt a lot more familiar and comfortable.

I still think live laughter diminishes rather than enhances the show, especially when the audience laughs at more serious material, but we can’t have everything.

Georgie & Mandy’s Second Episode Was More Serious

I love it when a comedy can make me laugh and cry in the same episode.

All the great classic comedies, like All in The Family and The Mary Tyler Moore Show, did that. So did Young Sheldon.

Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 2 found the perfect balance between emotionality and comedy.

I wasn’t for the idea of George Sr. dying so close to the end of Young Sheldon because I was afraid it would make the ending too depressing, but without it, we couldn’t have had the subplots we had in this story.

Georgie talking to his father’s grave made for strong opening and closing narration, so much so that, at first, I wished every episode would frame itself that way.

It would turn into a tired TV trope quickly if they really did that, but it did work well for this episode.

Missy’s Subplot Was Georgie & Mandy Season 1 Episode 2’s Emotional Heart

Missy was always my favorite on Young Sheldon. She was bright and sassy but always lost in the shuffle because of all the attention everyone paid Sheldon.

I know what it’s like to feel like you’re growing up in a sibling’s shadow, forever compared to them.

Even though our situations were completely different, I always identified strongly with Missy’s feelings and was disappointed there wasn’t a lot of her in the final season.

Georgie standing at the intake desk at the hospital looking scared on Georgie & Mandy Season 1 Episode 2
(CBS/Robert Voets)

It’s not surprising that after her father’s death, she became a rebellious troublemaker. Missy was headed in that direction before that, but as she said, she had no one to stop her from going off the rails now.

Missy: Now that you’re gone and Sheldon’s gone, I’m alone a lot. It’s a lot easier to get away with stuff now, but it sucks.

For me, a beat meant to be one of Georgie & Mandy Season 1 Episode 2’s funniest moments was its most painful.

Telling someone you’re there for them and then being called away the second they start pouring their heart out is an old joke, and I never find it funny.

It’s not cool when someone feels invisible and alone and acts out because they have no other way to communicate the pain they’re in, and someone who is supposed to be there for them pulls the rug out from under them.

Missy broke my heart when she finally cried at her father’s grave.

I can guarantee, though, that this is only the beginning of her rebellious behavior, and not just because we know from The Big Bang Theory that Missy didn’t find much success and happiness as an adult.

And that sucks. Georgie is right that she has a good head on her shoulders that she needs to use.

I can understand her not wanting to listen to him, though.

Not only is he her brother and not her father, but he dropped out of high school after learning Mandy was pregnant with his child, so he’s not the best person to advise her to stay in school and do what she’s supposed to do.

Georgie and Mandy Already Have Cracks In Their Foundation

The seeds have already been planted for Georgie and Mandy’s breakup.

Though Audrey is wrong that Georgie being little more than a teenager is the entire problem here, the young couple is already showing signs of not being able to weather life’s storms together.

Georgie’s panic attack was well done. It was understandable that he’d be afraid of having one early in life after losing his father the way he did, although I recognized what it was before he did.

The studio audience didn’t agree, but I thought his exchange with the doctor was as hilarious as it was poignant. Only Georgie would try to convince the doctor that it “don’t sound right” when the doctor tells him his heart is fine.

I also liked that Jim acknowledged the difficulty many men have with emotions. His self-deprecating joke about eating right and exercising to deal with stress while holding a piece of bacon in his hand was perfect.

This is a serious problem in reality, but sometimes the best way to address a social issue is with humor, and Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 2 did that perfectly.

(CBS/Robert Voets)

Connor Shouldn’t Be The Butt Of The Joke

Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 2 did a great job of dealing with mental health issues… except one.

It’s clear that Connor is autistic, or at least autistic-coded and probably meant to be the replacement character for Sheldon in this spinoff.

But too many of his scenes were about Mandy and her mother arguing about whether Connor was “normal,” and it felt like the underlying message was that the quirks that came with his neurodivergence deserved to be mocked.

Big Bang Theory did that with Sheldon to an extent, though it didn’t feel as mean-spirited.

Connor approaches Mandy and Audrey with another odd request on Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage Season 1 Episode 2
(CBS/Robert Voets)

Even though the adult version of Sheldon was often annoying, his sole purpose wasn’t to be the butt of jokes.

His friends loved him despite his self-centeredness and annoying habits, and he was the lead character.

So far, Connor’s only purpose in Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage is to come in, say something weird, get laughed at, and leave.

I hope this changes soon. If Connor isn’t going to be a major enough character to have a storyline beyond being strange, then he needs to be written out of the show.

Random Thoughts About Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 2

A few additional thoughts:

  • It would be awesome if Missy’s storyline was the set-up for Paige’s return. She’s been going down a similar path for years, and Missy got in trouble with her before, so this would be the perfect time to bring her back.
  • Audrey is still too hard, and her constant jokes about Georgie being too young for Mandy need to stop
  • Besides the awful Connor jokes, if I could wave a magic wand and delete one part of the show, it would be Reuben, who adds nothing.
  • The situations in this episode were so relatable I almost forgot this is supposed to take place in the 1990s and not in the digital age.

I have a few bones to pick with the pilot in this Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 1 review, but overall, it turned out to be a better show than expected.

Pilots are always tricky to judge because the show hasn’t fully found its voice yet, but Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage had potential once it got past its first five minutes.

Getting to know Georgie better made the show work, though there were a few things that needed to be ironed out.

Georgie stands up to Audrey, literally, at the breakfast table on Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage Season 1 Episode 1
(CBS/Troy Harvey)

More of Georgie, Less Stupid Meta Comedy, Please

The opening was rough because the series insisted on sticking in an unnecessary meta joke about laugh tracks in the first scene.

I don’t like laugh tracks, so I didn’t need commentary on how great it was that this show had one.

Georgie: Fraiser is a laughing show. I like laughing shows.

Audrey: What are you talking about?

Georgie: Some shows are laughing shows. Others aren’t. Like Wonder Years. Is it funny? No one knows cause no one laughs.

Disappointingly, the episode circled back to the same point at the end, with Jim admitting that Georgie was right about laugh tracks.

Georgie hugging Jim on Georgie& Mandy's First Marriage Season 1 Episode 1
(CBS/Troy Harvey)

It’s too bad because in between those two annoying scenes, there was both comedy and dramatic gold, along with a relatable situation for Georgie and Mandy.

This series is supposed to take place in the early 1990s, only a few months after Georgie’s father dies at the end of Young Sheldon, but far too many people today can relate to wanting their own place but not being able to afford to escape their parents’ home.

That tiny house that Georgie and Mandy ended up in temporarily was especially good comedically.

The train gag would have gotten old after a while, but the moment when the train drowned out Audrey’s apology was easily the funniest in the pilot.

I wish Georgie and Mandy had stayed in that tiny apartment. It could easily have been their home for the rest of the season without interfering with the couple’s interactions with their families.

The idea of a young couple only moving out for an episode is such a tired TV trope, and the too-tiny apartment was so good for physical comedy.

(CBS/Troy Harvey)

It could have been like the classic screwball comedy Green Acres with its running gag about the doorknob falling off of the farmhouse door, and that train gag could have been almost as good as the flushing toilet on All in The Family.

Sadly, moving out was just a plot point, which loses points in this Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage review because of all the fun we won’t get to have in that too-small space now.

Creating A Big Bang Theory Spinoff Without Sheldon Was Risky

In order to write a fair Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 1 review I had to divorce this show from its predecessors.

Sheldon Cooper became a phenomenon in The Big Bang Theory, which was why he got a prequel.

Jim puts his hand on Georgie's shoulder as he encourages him in the tire shop on Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage
(CBS/Troy Harvey)

This show is the first one in the franchise not to feature Sheldon, and there was no guarantee that Georgie and Mandy would generate the same interest without the boy genius to play off of.

However, the show’s focus on Georgie rather than Sheldon is exactly why it worked. In Young Sheldon, Georgie is often the punchline because of his ignorance of basic facts or his conformity to stereotypes about guys who live in rural areas.

It wasn’t until near the end of Young Sheldon that Georgie became more of a well-rounded character, and even then, it was irritating because most of Young Sheldon Season 7 was a backdoor pilot for Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage.

Georgie’s conversation with Jim was one of the first times we got to see Georgie’s family dynamics from his perspective.

Jim: How’s the new place?

Georgie: It’s okay. It’s small and its temporary, but its ours.

Jim: Look at you putting a positive spin on things.

Georgie: Maybe it’s a side effect of being dumb.

Jim: She didn’t mean that.

Georgie: It’s okay. It don’t hurt my feelings. With a brother like Sheldon, I’ve been the dumb one all my life.

In Young Sheldon, we knew that Missy always felt like she got lost in Sheldon’s shadow, but Georgie was off doing his own thing.

(CBS/Troy Harvey)

It was never clear how being the older brother affected him (other than not wanting to sit with Sheldon at lunch in the high school cafeteria during Young Sheldon Season 1).

Georgie’s comments about feeling like he was always the dumb one were as relatable as they were painful.

Georgie has always been the poster child for the type of kid who needed vocational classes in high school.

Comedies don’t always work when they try to address social justice issues, but Georgie’s feelings about his upbringing underscored the point about people being judged only by their academic abilities without diminishing the funnier aspects of the show.

He is brilliant mechanically but wasn’t academic. It’s not that he’s not intelligent; it’s that he has a different kind of intelligence that was never accepted, especially because Sheldon kept showing him up intellectually.

(CBS/Troy Harvey)

I was also moved by Georgie’s declaration that Jim reminded him of his father sometimes.

Comedies don’t have to be devoid of substance. They don’t need drama for the sake of drama, but they can have heart, and this one does.

Our Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 1 Review Of Mandy’s Parents

I liked Jim a lot, but sometimes he was too much like George Sr.

Georgie being reminded of his dad is one thing, but Jim’s mannerisms and personality seemed too on-the-nose at times, which was distracting.

Conversely, Audrey is too unlikable. Some of the comedy is supposed to come from the friction between her and Mandy and Georgie, but right now, she’s all hard edges.

Rachel Bay Jones does irritating and controlling characters well. I hated Salen on The Good Doctor for many of the same reasons, but I can’t stand Audrey right now.

It’s fine for her to be a thorn in Mandy’s side and to hate her son-in-law, but these types of antagonists work best if they have a sympathetic layer so that they seem more human and less like people who make trouble for their own sake.

Meemaw and Mary’s Cameo Should Have Come Earlier In The Episode

Before closing out this Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 1 review, I need to point out how good it was to have some familiar faces.

Meemaw was one of my favorite Young Sheldon characters, and her and Mary’s reactions to Georgie and Mandy’s new home were great. I especially liked Meemaw’s deadpan remark after a train-quake that the kids hated Mary so much they’d rather live here.

Still, I wish they could have been present in an earlier part of the episode. A first scene with characters I already knew would have helped me ease into Georgie and Mandy’s world instead of wasting time with that laugh track joke.

Big news from the world of The Big Bang Theory!

According to a new report from Deadline, the upcoming untitled TBBT spinoff has added three beloved cast members from the original series.

Kevin Sussman, Lauren Lapkus, and Brian Posehn will all make their returns to the Big Bang-iverse in a sequel series that’s otherwise shrouded in mystery.

On the original series, Sussman portrayed comic book store owner Stuart Bloom, who quickly developed into a fan favorite.

Lapkus and Posehn played Denise and Bert Kibbler, respectively, so it’s safe to assume that the spinoff will center around that trio of characters.

More casting announcements are sure to follow, but it seems that locking down the key three was producers’ top priority.

This is the first indication of the new show’s focus since it was first announced back on April of 2023.

Insiders say no script has been written, and the project has yet to receive a greenlight from CBS.

But since this is a Chuck Lorre production stemming from one of the most successful franchises in network history, it’s safe to assume that this thing will eventually see the light of day.

If you’re a fan of the original TBBT, then you know what fertile ground it’s been for spinoffs.

Young Sheldon wrapped its successful seven-season run in May.

(The show might well have continued for several more years were it not for the fact that titular star Iain Armitage was beginning to age out of the role.)

Lauren Lapkus attends the premiere of Netflix's "Between Two Ferns: The Movie" at ArcLight Hollywood on September 16, 2019 in Hollywood, California.

And that series spawned Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, which is set to premiere on CBS on October 17.

So yeah, barring anything short of a complete disaster, the mysterious third spinoff will hit your screen soon — possibly as early as fall of 2025.

And there’s been talk of additional TBBT spinoffs, including one centering on Kunal Nayyar‘s Raj character.

So it looks like the TBBT universe will continue to expand for the foreseeable future.

You can’t keep a good Cooper down. Young Sheldon may have seen its final episode, but that doesn’t mean audiences are done enjoying every bit of the family that bore a “bazinga” loving Sheldon. Say hello to Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage!

This time, however, the focus is on the eldest son as he navigates the adult world while starting a family with his wife, who is twelve years older than the tire entrepreneur in the new show Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage.

Obviously, as a spinoff of a spinoff, there are bound to be some familiar faces returning from either of its sister series, but for now, CBS is keeping the cast and characters close to its chest with a core four.

As it stands, it seems like the series will be all about the McAllisters, with Mandy’s parents in tow to help out with her small, budding family.

Either way, we have everything you need to know about these lovable and funny characters before they hit the small screen everywhere this fall with our Cast & Character Guide for the series!

Montana Jordan

Role: Georgie Cooper

It can’t be easy having a little brother who is a certified genius in a small Texan town, not to mention one that enters the same grade as you in high school, which certainly explains his animosity towards the young Sheldon Cooper.

But if it weren’t for Georgie, his other two siblings might not even exist, as his out-of-wedlock conception is the whole reason Mary and George Senior got married in the first place. And if it could work for them, it can most certainly work for Georgie, right?

(Bill Inoshita/CBS)

Sure, he dropped out of high school his senior year to be a salesman, but some people have a calling to be one of Texas’s most successful tire store chains.

This rock music-loving budding entrepreneur has a heart of gold. He was the one to take care of Mary and Missy after their father sadly passed away.

With so much backstory laid out in The Big Bang Theory, it’ll be interesting to see how the writers weave together his tale of his transformation from salesman to twice-divorced titan of tires.

Montana Jordan has only been in the television industry for eight years, with just a few acting credits under his belt. Still, in just that short time, he has made an impression on audiences everywhere as the lovable, hardworking Texan he is.

The nonprofit Young Artist Foundation even nominated him for Best Performance in a TV Series.

Emily Osment

Role: Mandy McAllister

She may not be the inspiration for the Barry Manilow classic, but Mandy McAllister has done a great job lighting a spark under Georgie Cooper to step up as a husband and father.

(Bill Inoshita/CBS)

The only question now is how will she handle a child-like husband while having her own child.

She has a lot to thank Georgie for, considering she was estranged from her family until he stepped in and brought them all back together.

It’ll be interesting to see how the dynamic will work since she’s twelve years older than the eldest of the Cooper kids, having entered her thirties just as Georgie has legally become an adult.

What’s likely on everyone’s minds is how long this ship will stay afloat, knowing that Georgie and Mandy will eventually call it quits. As the series title suggests, this is only the first marriage.

The writers have some time on their hands, considering it was never established how long their first marriage lasted or what happened between them after the divorce since the child they have together will keep them in each other’s lives.

Emily Osment has been gracing the small screen for twenty-five years. She gained prominence on the Disney channel as a child actor and won a Teen Choice Award for TV Showkick for her role in the hit kids show Hannah Montana.

Some could say her entry into the entertainment industry was inevitable, considering how prolific her older brother, Haley Joel Osment, was in his younger years.

Will Sasso

Role: Jim McAllister

It takes a strong man to admit the pants in the house are squarely worn by the missus, but that’s the kind of good-natured man Jim McAllister is.

This loving father and husband always seem to see something worth smiling or hugging for, making him all the more lovable.

Sadly, he has found himself caught between the crossfire of his stubborn wife and pregnant daughter, but someone must be the glue that keeps the family together.

As the owner of the local tire shop, it’s a solid assumption that he will play a large part in steering Georgie’s career in the automotive industry and will hopefully help ease the pain of George Senior’s death to help the young Cooper cope.

There are some faces that pop up on the TV screen that you know you’ve seen somewhere but are just not sure of, and you don’t look into them because you have a feeling you’ll see them again. That’s Will Sasso.

The man has been showing up in and out of movies and television shows for over thirty years with enough acting credits to overwhelm even the most avid boob tube watchers.

The man has been in over seventy shows and more than twenty-five films!

Rachel Bay Jones

Role: Audrey McAllister

Don’t let that sweet smile fool you. Texan women are just bred differently.

The Longhorn State seems to produce some strong women who know how to put down their feet and use their voices to be heard.

Audrey - Rachel Bay Jones - Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage
(CBS (Screenshot))

That’s precisely Audrey as the matriarch of the McAllister clan; she is a no-nonsense woman who sees things with a black-and-white mentality that could give Mary Cooper a run for her money.

Although she did not take the news of Mandy’s pregnancy well, she did manage to turn a corner in the seventh season of Young Sheldon and become a more respectful and kind mother.

Viewers are likely in store for a heaping helping of Audrey’s opinions this fall as one of the series’ main characters.

Overbearing mothers with opinions about newborns are a dime a dozen, but this mama will likely put them all to shame.

CBS certainly hit gold when they cast Rachel Bay Jones as Mandy’s mother since the Broadway actress is only one award away from landing herself the illustrious EGOT achievement.

With an Emmy, Grammy, and Tony to boot, she needs an Oscar to win the American entertainment award bingo.

Audrey - 2 - Rachel Bay Jones - Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage
(CBS (Screenshot))

That’s quite the feat, considering her roots are in the theater, and this Broadway thespian has only been in the film and television industry for eight years.

Honestly, the clock is just ticking away until Jones lands herself a little golden bald man to put on her shelf next to the gramophone, spinnable medallion, and winged woman.

Though the list is small, we suspect there will be quite a few familiar faces from The Big Bang Theory franchise who will make their way over to this humble little show to remind audiences why they fell in love with these characters and their stories.

Are you excited for Georgie and Mandy to take their first stab at this crazy thing called marriage?
