Some actors have mastered the art of comedy, cementing their character in fans' minds as someone with a distinct sense of humor.

It can be difficult to stand out as a character known for your sense of humor, given the fact that everyone has a different idea of what is funny.

There is your standard comedian who can tell a joke and think on their feet. Other times, the comedy comes from a certain type of stupidity where it is so dumb it is funny.

Some thrive because of their dry sense of humor or cynicism, and physical, witty, observational, self-deprecating, sarcastic, and satirical humor all have homes, too.

There are the ones who try to be funny and the ones who don’t, who might be meant to be laughed at rather than with, and all leave impressions.

Regardless of the type, the one thing distinguishing a character for their sense of humor is their delivery, which has to be believable. It is not just what you say but also how you say it that resonates with audiences.

And these characters, in no particular order, have certainly defined themselves as obtaining a unique sense of humor.

Charlie Kelly – It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia

From bashing rats to being an illiterate who knows German to huffing paint to knowing how to play instruments and coming up with songs on the spot, Charlie Kelly (Charlie Day) is a prime example of absurd comedy.

Charlie has “Gone America All Over Everybody’s Ass,” proved he isn’t white trash by the motility of his jean shorts, put on his Nightman Cometh musical, has to be told not to try to swim to Europe, and has a real cheese addiction.

There is also the great moment when Mac and Dennis try to help him set up a dating app profile.

His likes? Little green ghouls. Hobby? Magnets. Favorite food? Milk steak. Dislikes? People’s knees. I mean, cover your knees up if you’re gonna be walking around everywhere…

What does he pretend his career is on the date? Well, he tries to say philanthropist, but the words “get blocked up in [his] mouth and [he] don’t say it no good,” so “full-on rapist” is what ends up coming out.

Larry David – Curb Your Enthusiasm

Larry David is “pretty, pretty” hilarious. His obscure opinions on society’s norms and taboos lead him to say and do things that scream cringe.

Larry David plays a fictionalized version of himself on Curb Your Enthusiasm.
(HBO/Youtube Screenshot)

This fictional version of himself is brilliant, unconventional, opinionated, and easily hated, yet there will be moments you find yourself agreeing.

We all put people in our phones using a one-word identifying descriptor, pick up hookers to use the carpool lane, wear MAGA hats so no one wants to have any social interaction with us, pretend to be an Orthodox Jew to get our best friend a kidney faster…

Related: How Technology Changed TV Tropes Forever

The show is unscripted and ridiculous, and no one could ever dream of recreating Larry David’s sense of humor.

Gregory Eddie – Abbott Elementary

Abbott Elementary has a deep talent pool, and there is no shortage of humor on the hit sitcom.

Tyler James Williams as Gregory Eddie on Abbott Elementary whose character is known for his side eye.
(ABC/Youtube Screenshot)

However, Gregory Eddie’s (Tyler James Williams) subtle humor is underrated.

His facial expressions, timing, and consistency are top-notch.

His effortless and simple facial expressions are what set his character apart.

The way he takes Ava’s crude and flirtatious comments leaves fans cracking up.

His side eyes and how he looks into the camera do not go unnoticed. It is physical comedy at its finest.

Lucille Bluth – Arrested Development

The Lucille Bluth lines are endless…

“I wanna cry so bad, but I don’t think I can spare the moisture.”

Lucille Bluth is the matriarch with a blunt sense of humor in Arrested Development.
(Fox/Youtube Screenshot)

“Your wrist is testing the tensile strength of that bracelet.”

“It’s one banana, Michael, what could it cost, 10 dollars?”

Her drinking problem is also an amazing center of her humor, ordering vodka on the rocks with a piece of toast for breakfast, winning a drinking contest while in rehab, saying people hate hospitals because there aren’t bars in them.

Jessica Walter delivers all her lines flawlessly, beautifully, and with genius.

Everyone else could only hope to master the art as well as she has.

The comedic gold she has left behind is historic, and Lucille Bluth is undoubtedly an Arrested Development fan favorite character because of her sense of humor.

Leon Black- Curb Your Enthusiasm

J.B. Smoove's character in Curb Your Enthusiasm is Leon Black whose sense of humor is unique.
(HBO/Youtube Screenshot)

Yes, Larry David may be the show’s star, but Leon Black’s (J.B. Smoove) sense of humor stole the spotlight the second he got in front of that camera.

He is proud of his ability to “brings the ruckus to the ladies,” comparing himself to “Barack Obama, motherf*****! I’m the president of hittin’ that a**!”

Without Leon, fans would never know the nickname “long-ball Larry” or the term “lampin’.”

He is not shy either, admitting to shooting a porno constipated, and his natural skill to handle Larry’s unusual behaviors with quick-witted one-liners is brilliant.

His entry into the show was even top-tier comedy.

His whole family left the David household, and despite having no reason to stay, he told Larry he was “going upstairs to eat this f***in’ Chinese food in my f***in’ room.” He has been a staple in the HBO hit ever since.

Phil Dunphy- Modern Family

(ABC/Youtube Screenshot)

Of course, the first thing that comes to mind when fans think of the Modern Family Dunphy father figure is one thing— his book of “Phil’sosophy.”

Always look people in the eye, even if they are blind. If you get pulled over for speeding, tell the police officer your spouse has diarrhea.

Watch a sunrise at least once a day. Marry someone who looks sexy while disappointed.

Related: Unforgettable Narcissts of the Small Screen

Phil’s childish behavior, novelty, and awkwardness distinguish him from the other cast members.

His dad jokes and goofiness are played out perfectly. It is hard to do dumb humor without it being a bit cringe-worthy, but Phil is a wizard at it.

April Ludgate- Parks & Recreation

April Ludgate (Audrey Plaza), a Parks and Recreation favorite, is a brilliant contrast to Leslie. She is detached, shrewd, and loves ravens — a beacon for dark comedy fans.

Aubrey Plaza as April Ludgate in Parks and Recreation who has a dark sense of humor.
(NBC/Youtube Screenshot)

Her head is a “terror dome,” and may or may not have a giant needle on hand if someone tells her secrets and thinks going insane is fun!

Her interest in national parks may stem from them being the best places for a full-moon werewolf transformation, but at least she is fighting for them!

Plus, she makes a very solid point — all wine tastes the same. If you spend more than $5 on it, then you are very stupid.

Her deadpan manner, obvious boredom, sarcasm, and dry sense of humor are praiseworthy and have garnered her character much-deserved comedic attention.

George Lopez- The George Lopez Show

George Lopez's character is a fictionalized version of himself.
(ABC/Youtube Screenshot)

Like Larry David, the titular comedian George Lopez plays a fictionalized version of himself in the ABC sitcom of the same name.

His childhood is the center of a lot of the comedy because his mother was a hedonistic alcoholic.

This leads to many hilarious one-liners because now he is a helicopter parent. This family dynamic and Lopez’s humor create a relatability and lighten up a rough childhood.

Related: Heavy On The Rizz: The Most CHarismatic Leading Men on TV

For example, when his mother complimented him on always being independent, crossing the street alone when he was 2, Lopez responded, “I was looking for food!”

He teaches life lessons in unique ways, playing “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and queuing it up to the educational part, hoping that watching scary stuff would make his son more careful of the dangers in the world.

Lopez also has a repertoire of catchphrases, which are always delivered beautifully and in a way that never gets old.

He does not hide his disdain for people and loves to mess with anyone who tries to offend him.

George Lopez uses his ruthless sense of humor to encourage people to dunk him.
(ABC/Youtube Screenshot)

When an in-law asks what he has been up to, knowing they don’t think highly of him, he responds that he just got off of parole due to stabbing someone when they looked at his wife in the wrong way.

Licked the knife clean, too, because that is how he rolls, fool!

Creed Bratton – The Office

Creed also plays a fictionalized version of himself on The Office.

The real-life former Grass Roots musician plays a hippie and homeless man with a strange sense of humor who is employed at Dunder Mifflin.

The show has a long list of talent, but everything that comes from Creed’s mouth is hysterical. He may not be the main character, but it will surely be an unforgettable moment when the cameras focus on him. The fact his golden nuggets are sporadic only adds to the intrigue and comedy.

Offended by homosexuality? Not Creed.

In the ’60s, he “made love to many, many women, often outdoors, in the mud and the rain, and it’s possible a man slipped in. There would be no way of knowing.”

Creed Bratton's character on The Office is a fictionalized version the real-life Grass Roots musician.
(NBC/Youtube Screenshot)

He has a mysterious way of never being fired despite not actually knowing what is going on, and his literal grassroots is obvious when he says, “The copier did tricks on the high wire. A lady tried to give away a baby that looked like a cat.

“There was a Dwight impersonator and a Jim impersonator. A strongman crushed a turtle. I laughed, and I cried. Not bad for a day in the life of a dog food company.”

As fans, we go along with his nonsense. Of course, he understands pirate code but can’t speak it, though. Need a worm dealer? Creed’s got you.

He thinks Jim is gay but tries to set him up with his daughter. Points out you can only ooze two things: sexuality and pus. And, if he can’t scuba, then what’s this all been about? What is he working towards?

Jim Lahey – Trailer Park Boys

Famous for being a drunk trailer park supervisor, Jim Lahey (John Dunsworth) may be best known for his line, “I am the liquor,” talk of the winds of shit, and constant failure to take down whatever illegal activity Julian, Ricky, and Bubbles are conducting.

He is absurd, and his sense of humor is heightened when he is “on the liquor,” telling stories of shitfish, shitnets, and shitpower because “when you are in a man’s power, you must do as he bids you.”

Jim Lahey's sense of humor when he is on the liquor is unparalleled.
(Netflix/Youtube Screenshot)

Lahey’s struggle with alcohol leads to the most quotable moments of TPB, like, “Alcoholics go to meetings. I don’t go to meetings; therefore, I’m not an alcoholic.”

Before Dunsworth unexpectedly passed away, he coincidentally said at some point while shooting the show, “When you’re dead, you’re dead. But you’re not quite so dead if you contribute something.”

He undoubtedly contributed moments on the screen that will live on through memes and fan’s hearts.

Kimiko Miyashiro – The Boys

Kimiko Miyashiro (Karen Fukuhara) may be a largely nonverbal character, but her sense of humor shines in other forms, such as sign language and text messages.

She is quick-witted and sharp-minded and keeps Frenchie and the other boys alert with her clever insults and callouts.

She can grasp fans uniquely, which speaks a lot about her character.

Even though she may be a little more reserved, guarded, and tougher than your average character known for their sense of humor, she still stands out among the rest of The Boys cast.

Terry Jeffords – Brooklyn Nine-Nine

The Brooklyn Nine-Nine lieutenant is another character based on the actors themselves.

Terry Jeffords (Terry Crews) may physically be huge, eating 10,000 calories a day to maintain his size, but he is really a softy.

His size has played into many of the best moments on the show, like when he attempted to get a vasectomy.

The doctors had to stop the surgery because they didn’t realize before that they didn’t have enough anesthesia for the procedure due to his size, which forced them to pause the operation.

In his state of delusion, he utters numerous hilarious lines, like commenting on how small Jake Peralta’s head is and asking him where he keeps his brain.

His obsession with yogurt and his frequent use of the third person add a layer to his sense of humor that makes him unforgettable.

Tormund Giantsbane- Game of Thrones

The Game of Thrones Free Folk leader is by far one of the funniest characters. His vulgarity, brute nature, and directness lead to some of the show’s best banter and comedic lines.

His facial expressions are on point, and his obsession with Brienne of Tarth makes for some of his most iconic moments.

His words were quite literal, like when someone referred to the Queen.

He wasn’t sure if they were talking about Cersei or Daenerys, so for clarification, he asked, “The one with the dragons or the one that f**** her brother?”

Or his advice on how to survive the cold, “You have to keep moving; that’s the secret. Walking’s good, fight’s better, f******’s best.”

Tormund Giantsbane has a vulgar sense of humor which made his character unforgettable.
(HBO/Youtube Screenshot)

Giantsbane’s sense of humor is a series highlight and makes for some epic memes.

Willie Jack – Reservation Dogs

Reservation Dogs is a revolutionary FX show hailed for depicting Native Americans through an Indigenous perspective rather than a white perspective.

Although it is centered around a tragic event, it has its hysterical moments.

Willie Jack (Paulina Alexis) is tough, fierce, loyal, and unafraid to call someone out when needed. She is known for her memorable digs and clever sense of humor, which feels natural.

Even if her moments are just tiny sections of her lines, she makes them count.

Just the way she thinks of learning the wizard ways as not being sure if it’s a wax-on, wax-off situation, so she just shuts up and goes with it, creating a laughable and memorable moment.

Her facial expressions also make fans crack up, and there is something special about a character’s ability to evoke laughter from simple reactions.

Samantha Jones – Sex and the City

Samantha Jones left her mark on the industry with her brilliantly hilarious moments in Sex and the City. She does not care what anyone thinks about her, lives life to the fullest, and never stifles her passion or personality.

She always wants to have a good time, obviously, when she says, “I don’t believe in the Republican party or the Democratic party. I just believe in parties.”

She is also not afraid to tell a man she loves them but loves herself more.

She knows who she is and is not afraid to flaunt it. Her delivery and willingness to make her presence none makes for some of the most quotable TV moments.

(HBO/Youtube Screenshot)

“Yeah, I am harsh. I’m also demanding, stubborn, self-sufficient, and always right. In bed, at the office, and everywhere else.”

Grandma Huang – Fresh Off the Boat

Grandma Huang (Lucille Soong) is the comedic relief on Fresh Off the Boat.

Fans love her attitude and sense of humor, both verbal and physical. Her facial expressions and wheelchair make for the best parts of the show.

With the looming threat of Y2K and Emery’s idea to live it up, instead of following the public’s panic, she decides to pour a can of soda on the carpet because there is no need to worry about consequences with the crash of computers on the horizon.

Using the same reasoning when Emery and Evan tell her not to sign up for a credit card because she has no way of paying it off, she tells them, no need to worry, you pile up the debt and wait until January when bank records get erased. Y2K. Her way of living it up.

Grandma Huang is known for her sense of humor in Fresh Off the Boat.
(ABC/Youtube Screenshot)

In her free time, she likes to take pennies from the public fountain, and she loves Garfield.

She loves free things from the bank, and after the disappointment of learning the pen she wanted was chained to the desk, she takes a potted plant instead.

Supposedly, she has also knitted a cape for Evel Knievel in the past, and she watches “Twins” because she is attracted to Danny DeVito.

Grandma Huang’s delivery is flawless, and her humor is unparalleled.

Chandler Bing – Friends

Chandler Bing’s (Matthew Perry) sarcastic sense of humor and ability to “say more dumb things before 9 a.m. than most people say all day” certainly established him as a character known for his humor.

He also uses comedy as a defense mechanism and a way to cope with his rough childhood upbringing, which started after his parents split up.

This makes him a relatable character, as this tends to be a way for many people to cope.

Chandler is also a comedian who uses his self-esteem issues as the center of jokes, and quitting often becomes the joke.

He always delivers the best zingers and witty comments, but he tends to mess up often, which only adds to his comedy.

His natural humor is extremely effective and has created infamous humor throughout Friends.

Dr. Gregory House – House

Dr. Gregory House has a dry sense of that resonates with fans. He is intelligent and crude, but in the most captivating way that made his sometimes insensitive remarks absolutely hilarious.

When someone asks him if he minds if they come in his place, he responds, “Not at all. Do you mind if I leave?”

How could fans not crack up when he said, “I cared for eight seconds. Then got distracted,” or “The good news is he won’t be bitching about losing his hand if he can’t breathe”?

Dr. Gregory House is known for his sarcastic sense of humor.
(Fox/Youtube Screenshot)

He doesn’t care what people think of him and calls it as it is.

He also has his own unconventional way of caring for people, like when he knocked on Wilson’s door and said, “I know you’re in there. I can hear you caring.”

The star of House brought humor to a hit show that otherwise is not considered a comedy.

Red Forman – That ’70s Show

Red Forman of That ’70s Show is an icon of bitter humor, sarcasm, and edgy jabs.

He is irritable and grumpy but not actually a cruel person, which makes an interesting contrast and his comedy even better because, you know, at his core, he isn’t truly hateful.

Red Forman's will always be known for his bitter sense of humor.
(Fox/Youtube Screenshot)

He is blunt and has an irreverent tone and manner that fans cling to and enjoy.

He is the king of insults and is always looking for someone’s ass to put his boot up. He also wants to be buried facedown when the time comes so anyone who doesn’t like him can kiss it.

His deadpan humor makes him an icon for the ages.

Constance Wu is speaking out about controversial tweets she made about the renewal of Fresh off the Boat. The star said they were triggered by on-set abuse.

Constance Wu is speaking out about her time working on the hit ABC comedy series Fresh Off the Boat.

In 2019, the actress took to social media to express her dissatisfaction about the series being renewed.

"No it’s not," she wrote in response to a fan saying the pickup was great news.

She wrote “F—king hell” and “So upset right now that I’m literally crying. Ugh. F—k.”

The star subsequently followed up that she was “so grateful”about the renewal, before revealing later that week she had to pass on “another project I was really passionate about" as a result of her commitment to the series.

Wu went public recently about sexual harassment and emotional abuse from a producer on the series.

On Monday night, the star revealed that her upset about the renewal was due to what transpired behind-the-scenes of the series.

Wu also referenced the producer’s “inappropriate touching, the telling me to wear short skirts, the intimidation in the interview with Seth Meyers.

The actress recalls the abuse from the unnamed producer most occurring during the first two years of the series, revealing that she "felt a little bit of job security" and started "saying no."

These actions are said to have "infuriated" the producer, and the star wanted to stay silent about her time on the series.

However, Wu said that her reaction to the renewal in 2019 was a way for her to vent about what had happened.

“I feel like I was never able to really be myself on set, because I’d see my abuser being buddy-buddy with everybody else, knowing what he had done to me,” she shared.

“The thing I learned is that bad feelings and abuse don’t just go away because you will it to. It’s going to come out somewhere. People didn’t understand the context of those tweets.

“Thank you for not making fun of [the tweets], because it led me to a really dark time,” Wu told Seth Meyers.

“I decided to include [the tweet controversy] in the book because I think it’s important that we engage in curiosity and empathy before we go straight to judgment."

"Because if somebody does something out of character for them, it usually means something’s going on in their life.”

Earlier this year, Wu opened up about the backlash to the tweets from 2019 and how she tried to end her life as a result.

"When a few DMs from a fellow Asian actress told me I'd become a blight on the Asian American community, I started feeling like I didn't even deserve to live anymore," Constance wrote.

"That I was a disgrace to AsAms, and they'd be better off without me. Looking back, it's surreal that a few DMs convinced me to end my own life, but that's what happened."

"Luckily, a friend found me and rushed me to the ER." Wu said that the "scary moment" made her reassess "a lot in my life." "For the next few years, I put my career aside to focus on my mental health," Constance added.

Constance Wu, the star of Fresh Off the Boat, has revealed she tried to end her life after backlash from tweets about the show's Season 6 renewal.

The actress, now starring on Prime Video's The Terminal List, opened up in a social media statement Thursday after a three-year hiatus.

"Tbh, I'm a little scared but I'm dipping my toe back in to say I'm here and while I was gone I wrote a book called Making a Scene," she began.

"The next part is hard to talk about…but I was afraid of coming back on social media because I almost lost my life from it."

"3 years ago, when I made careless tweets about the renewal of my TV show," she continued.

"It ignited outrage and internet shaming that got pretty severe."

The star said she felt "awful" for what she did.

"Luckily, a friend found me and rushed me to the ER."

Wu said that the "scary moment" made her reassess "a lot in my life."

"For the next few years, I put my career aside to focus on my mental health," Constance added.

"AsAms don't talk about mental health enough. While we're quick to celebrate representation wins, there's a lot of avoidance around the more uncomfortable issues with our community."

Constance said her tweets became "so touchy that most of my AsAm colleagues decided that was the time to avoid me or ice me out."

"I'll admit it hurt a lot, but it also made me realize how important it is to reach out and care for people who are going through a hard time."

The Crazy Rich Asians star says she's here "to reach out and help people talk about the uncomfortable stuff to understand it, reckon with it, and open pathways to healing."

"If we want to be seen, really seen…We need to let all of ourselves be seen, including the parts we're scare of or ashamed of—parts that, however imperfect, require care and attention."

Many ABC shows look uncertain for renewal as we head into the spring, but which will not survive to the 2020-21 season? Get all the details.

Now that we're into 2020, the broadcast networks will be making renewal or cancellation decisions in the coming months.

But one show on the network you can count on not returning for a second season is Emergence.

The Alison Tolman-fronted mystery thriller is failing to live up to the hype in the ratings, making it a strong contender to be canceled after just one season.

Scroll down for a look at all of ABC's scripted line-up and what decision we think ABC will make on them based on most up to date ratings and network politics.

Cristina's Package - Tall - Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 9
(ABC/Kelsey McNeal)

Grey's Anatomy – Renewed

Grey's Anatomy continues to be a solid option for ABC, with Grey's Anatomy Season 16 averaging 6.1 million viewers and a 1.3 rating. The series continues to be the network's highest-rated and most-watched scripted series.

It also gets a big boost in delayed viewing, so it will really be on the air for as long as Ellen Pompeo wants to play Meredith Grey. ABC has already locked Pompeo in for next season because the series has been renewed.

There's no telling what the future holds beyond that. Fans reacted negatively to the news of Justin Chambers' exit. Could that be the thing that leads to fans tuning out for good?

Time will tell.

Getting Their Drink On - The Conners Season 2 Episode 9
(ABC/Eric McCandless)

The Conners – Certain Renewal

Despite never reaching Roseanne's level of success, The Conners is a success story for ABC. It is the network's highest-rated and most-watched comedy series, coming in at 5.7 million total viewers and a 1.1 rating.

The fans seem to agree that it is different enough from its predecessor and manages to stand on its own very well. It is a magnet in the DVR department, but it doesn't enjoy the level of success as some other series abroad.

Being a domestic success will be enough to keep this show on the air for the years to come.

Mitch Got This! - Modern Family Season 11 Episode 5
(ABC/Tony Rivetti)

Modern Family – Ending

Modern Family Season 11 is averaging 4.2 million viewers and a 1.0 rating, and the series will sign off for good later this year.

Go Big - The Goldbergs
(ABC)

The Goldbergs – Certain Renewal

This hit comedy is down somewhat from last season, losing 25% in the demo. It is currently averaging 4.1 million viewers and a 0.9 rating, so it is performing well enough to stick around.

It boasts strong increases on the DVR, so there's no reason to suggest it will be winding down any time soon.

(TALL) Severe Swelling - The Good Doctor Season 3 Episode 12
(ABC/Jack Rowand)

The Good Doctor – Certain Renewal

This medical drama has continued to erode in its third season, which is currently averaging 5.7 million viewers and a 0.8 rating.

It has always been a solid performer on the DVR front and remains a top 5 series for ABC, so it will be renewed.

Saville Family Fun - Tall - A Million Little Things Season 2 Episode 10
(ABC/Jack Rowand)

A Million Little Things – Certain Renewal

This ABC drama has been relatively steady, averaging 4.5 million viewers and a 0.8 rating. Like many shows, people watch it post-airdate, meaning that it's looming move back to 10/9c shouldn't have much of an effect on the ratings.

It will be back for a third season.

Paul is making an entrance - mixed-ish Season 1 Episode 3
(ABC)

Mixed-ish – Likely Renewal

This second spinoff of Black-ish has been pulling in passable ratings. Currently averaging 3.3 million viewers and a 0.7 rating in the demo. It also scores well in delayed viewing.

It should be back for a second season.

Schooled – Likely Renewal

This spinoff of The Goldbergs is averaging 3.2 million viewers and a 0.7 rating out of the mothership series. That's a decent hold, and the show should score a renewal unless the ratings drop considerably in the second half of the season.

Bless This Mess – Likely Renewal

Bless This Mess is the only ABC scripted series to rise in the demo year-to-year. It is averaging 3.7 million viewers and a 0.7 rating. Despite dropping a lot from The Conners, it is still a solid performer.

Single Parents – Could Go Either Way

This comedy series is down almost 25% in the demo year-to-year and is averaging 2.7 million viewers and a 0.7 rating in the demo. The series does not get the critical love of Bless This Mess or the same DVR bump.

It could go either way at this stage.

Black-ish – Likely Renewal

Even with diminished on-air ratings, there's no way ABC would cancel black-ish without a pre-planned final season. It is pulling in 2.8 million viewers and a 0.7 rating, but the show has won several awards and kick-started two successful spinoffs.

American Housewife – Likely Renewal

ABC is partly to blame for the downturn in this show's ratings. After moving to Fridays, it slipped to 3.4 million viewers and a 0.6 rating. The network wants to move the show to Wednesdays, and it should perform well enough to stick around.

A Serial Killer - The Rookie Season 2 Episode 10
(ABC)

The Rookie – Likely Renewal

The Rookie moved to Sundays and dropped in the ratings, but 3.6 million viewers and a 0.6 rating, coupled with strong returns on the DVR front means this Nathan Fillion-led series will be back for a third season.

A Recording - Stumptown Season 1 Episode 11
(ABC/Eric McCandless)

Stumptown – Could Go Either Way

Stumptown regularly doubles its Live+SD ratings on the DVR front. Stumptown Season 1 is averaging 3.1 million viewers and a 0.5 rating, but it regularly tops a 1.0 rating in Live+7.

It garnered a back 9 order, so ABC has faith in the series. If it can remain stable, it should be back for another season.

Fatal Exception - Emergence Season 1 Episode 8
(ABC/Patrick Harbron)

Emergence – Likely Cancellation

Emergence started its life as an NBC pilot, and ABC swooped in to pick it up because it believed in the series. However, Emergence Season 1 is averaging 2.8 million viewers and a 0.5 rating.

It does get a minor boost on DVR, but not enough to think it will be on ABC's schedule next season.

Shocking Discovery - How To Get Away With Murder Season 6 Episode 9
(ABC/Eric McCandless)

How to Get Away With Murder – Ending

This long in the tooth drama is averaging 2.3 million viewers and a 0.5 rating in its final season.

Jessica letter writing - Fresh Off the Boat Season 6 Episode 10
(ABC/ Mitch Haaseth)

Fresh Off the Boat – Canceled

Constance Wu can breathe a sigh of relief because this comedy is ending after its sixth season. It is currently averaging 2.3 million viewers and a 0.4 rating.

Louis tries to help Jessica, turning her Christmas dream into a nightmare on Fresh Off the Boat Season 6 Episode 10. And the boys find themselves on the naughty list.

On the midseason finale of Fresh Off the Boat Season 6 Episode 10, we were whisked away to Jessica Town.

The split reality between real life and Jessica's dream world acts as a parallel between her current situation and the lessons she needs to learn.

Jessica got caught up in her own world with Christmastime and making everything perfect from stunning calligraphy to the most intricate gingerbread house.

It acts as a message to a lot of people during the holiday season. We get so wrapped up in the commercialization of the holidays that we let the important stuff fall by the wayside.

Jessica's Town - Fresh Off the Boat Season 6 Episode 10
(ABC/ Mitch Haaseth)

Louis simply wanted to spend time with Jessica ice skating, but she couldn't seem to set aside her long list of to do's.

Meanwhile, Honey confided in the boys to take care of Marvin's Christmas present, a Maritime Nutcracker.

One expensive Maritime Nutcracker, might I add.

Evan and Eddie destroyed it in an attempt to test its cracking abilities, and instead of confessing to Honey, they decided to enlist Emery in working as an elf at the mall.

Eddie and Evan Nutracker - Fresh Off the Boat Season 6 Episode 10
(ABC/ Mitch Haaseth)

The irony of the boys forcing Emery to do them a favor because they are family is clear after they wouldn't even help him run lines for his acting class.

After visiting the mall, Evan noticed how disheartened Emery was by his job and thought to pull a Robinhood of sorts.

Evan: And I don’t meet the age and height requirements for elf duty, which feels backward, but hey, rules are rules.

🔗 permalink: And I don’t meet the age and height requirements for elf duty, which feels backward, but hey,…

He decided to steal the Nutcracker rather than having Emery continue working a job that he hated so much.

I'm confused by the lack of discipline that was implemented after the Nutcracker was stolen. There was only one on display and how did Evan easily walk away with it?!

The boys in Jessica Town - Fresh Off the Boat Season 6 Episode 10
(ABC/ Mitch Haaseth)

I'm surprised Jessica didn't find out, she's usually an all-knowing entity.

Louis attempted to help Jessica with the letter-writing, and when Jessica saw his handy work she was floored by the sloppiness.

Jessica: I mean look at this calligraphy. It could have come straight from the Vatican.

🔗 permalink: I mean look at this calligraphy. It could have come straight from the Vatican.

She reprimanded him for his supposed carelessness and took over.

After he expressed his frustration with her ridiculousness, she offered him a chance to redeem himself by giving him the responsibility to construct a lifesize gingerbread house for the neighborhood.

Gingerbread making - Fresh Off the Boat Season 6 Episode 10
(ABC/ Mitch Haaseth)

Jessica's controlling personality and perfectionism is not only her strength but an equally, if not greater weakness.

It's amazing that she wants to do everything perfectly, but when it comes to the expense of family time and Louis' feelings, she needs to take a look at herself and the real reason for the holiday season.

Louis: I give you three of vacation days a year, that’s pretty easy. And I’m easy on the eyes! That’s two easies.

🔗 permalink: I give you three of vacation days a year, that’s pretty easy. And I’m easy on the eyes!…

Louis expressed these sentiments after she degraded his gingerbread house, which I admit, definitely was not great.

Although, the thought and hard work he put into it was quite admirable.

Jessica letter writing - Fresh Off the Boat Season 6 Episode 10
(ABC/ Mitch Haaseth)

Jessica came to the realization in her alternate reality that in Jessica Town, she's ruling it like a dictatorship, but once Louis became mayor, sure things weren't as beautiful or pristine, but people were happier and things ran smoother.

She loosened the reigns and came to an understanding that her overbearing presence made for an unpleasant holiday season.

Jessica: Fun-fact, I’m good at everything I do.

🔗 permalink: Fun-fact, I’m good at everything I do.

Family was the common theme among both storylines, and it came perfectly for the holiday season.

The holidays aren't the only time for us to be grateful and appreciative of family, but it is one of the rarer times a majority of people get time off of work to spend time at home.

Jessica and the boys - Fresh Off the Boat Season 6 Episode 10
(ABC/ Mitch Haaseth)

Most immigrant families are in the service industry where they don't get that time off, and that's something in America that is flawed.

Of course, everything can't get shut down, but it should be a time of rest and rejuvenation surrounded by friends and family.

The boys, too, learned this lesson about the importance of family after Grandma Huang vouched for them and gave Honey the stolen Nutcracker. Shh, she will never know.

But Grandma Huang didn't let them off so easy. She required payment in Taco Bell gift cards. It was sweet seeing Eddie and Evan working together.

Grandma Huang present - Fresh Off the Boat Season 6 Episode 10
(ABC/ Mitch Haaseth)

Eddie has really matured over the past few seasons, and I think this is the first time he has been a thoughtful brother ready to take the fall for Evan.

Additionally, the Victorian-style dream was gorgeous and made it seem like a Christmas episode. It truly contrasted with the scenes of the Orlando sunny weather.

It added a magical touch to the episode, and I guess that's a wrap until next year. We're looking to the final few, bittersweet episodes of the show.

Additional Side Notes:

  • I don't think I've ever seen a Nutcracker actually used to crack a nut before this episode. Incredible.

  • Emery, or Jingles, looked more like a jester than an elf.

  • Grandma Huang's fascination with Garfield is so pure. Does anyone remember where her obsession comes from?

  • Did anyone else miss Lao Ban Santa? Although, I am grateful there was at least a small mention of her. I love the running theme that's carried on throughout the seasons.

  • I love every time they showcase Constance Wu's voice. When's she dropping her next single?

It's Christmas season on this episode of Fresh Off the Boat, aka the day after Thanksgiving. Jessica's already in the holiday spirit and has her long list of Christmas to do's stretching her thin.

In an attempt to alleviate her stresses so they can finally go ice skating, Louis tries to help. Although, Jessica is very particular on her Christmas decorations and traditions.

Louis' help becomes a stressor and instead ruins her Christmas.

Meanwhile, Honey confides in the boys to take care of Marvin's Maritime Nutcracker and they end up breaking it.

Evan and Eddie get Emery to work as an elf at the mall to try and make money to buy a new Nutcracker.

After Evan sees how much distress the new job puts on Emery he decides to steal the Nutcracker instead.

The scenes split between Jessica's dreamland, Jessica Town, and reality. In Jessica Town, she's the mayor and makes all the rules. The butcher, Louis, does everything differently, but somehow appeals to everyone.

This dream world parallels the lessons Jessica is learning in her own life as she learns that Christmastime isn't about being perfect, but spending time with her family and enjoying it no matter what might go wrong.

You may be unfamiliar with her name and her face, but you sure know her work and the faces she's made.

Cindy Miguens is the hand and artistic mastermind behind the Makeup Department for Fresh Off the Boat.

During her 25 years as a TV makeup artist her most notable TV shows include Pretty Little Liars, Faking It, Famous In Love, The OC, and many more.

Huang Family - Fresh Off the Boat
(ABC/ Andrew Eccles)

She initially joined the industry after receiving her Cosmetology license and decided to move to Los Angeles to work with big names and big faces.

She received training under Joe Blasco from the Joe Blasco School, one of the most renowned and prestigious makeup artists in the industry.

It's a hard industry and the path to success is through connections and who you know.

Miguens said the person who gave her her first job is now a coworker on Fresh Off the Boat. Things truly come around full circle.

Jessica Huang PR - Fresh Off the Boat
(ABC/ Bob D’Amico)

Her work on Fresh Off the Boat primarily pertains to Constance Wu and Randall Park. When creating Jessica Huang's character she specifically tries to "stay true to the 90s look" as the show is based in the '90s.

Jessica's character is a housewife who dabbles in her kids' school, realty, and eventually seeks to become a school administrator.

To match this, Miguens puts Wu in a brown smokey eye and plum lip, something very reminiscent of the 90s makeup trend and what makes Wu feel the most comfortable.

Miguens described Wu as "very respectful, sweet, and very professional" saying she is more wonderful in person than her character is portrayed on the show.

Constance Wu - Fresh Off the Boat
(ABC/ Andrew Eccles)

Wu's makeup routine is done in a speedy 30 minutes. So, to all you makeup gurus, it is possible to look flawless in a short amount of time.

Miguens attributed the speedy routine to the help of lash extensions which cuts down the amount of time dedicated to lash curling, mascara application, and all the tedious extra work.

While Randall Park's makeup takes only about 20 minutes and most of the makeup routine is dedicated to covering up his tattoos. You heard it here folks!

Park has the names of his daughter and wife on his arm.

A sweet sentiment, but one that doesn't fit with Louis Huang's character. It's easy to forget that makeup isn't entirely about the face, but also includes body makeup as well.

Randall Park - Fresh Off the Boat
(ABC/ Andrew Eccles)

We're used to hearing of the long 12+ hour workdays actors put in, but oftentimes we forget about the makeup artists, costume designers, and behind the scenes agents who also put in the time to create the sets and characters we're so used to seeing come together effortlessly on-screen.

The true magic behind these huge productions.

A typical day, Miguens revealed, starts around 5 am and ends around 7 pm.

She said there's hardly any downtime to sit around, between getting characters ready for the next scene and quick touch-ups.

But when there is a rare moment to breathe, it's usually dedicated to paying bills and other necessary chores, nothing too glamorous.

Huang Family - Fresh Off the Boat
(ABC/ Andrew Eccles)

It's very much an environment dedicated to professionalism in order to create smooth transitions.

Miguens expressed that an actor's personality is the element that makes the makeup process either easy or difficult. As long as the actor trusts in the makeup artist's abilities, then it's an easy flow.

Her favorite actor to work with has been Janel Parrish, Mona Vanderwaal from Pretty Little Liars.

She stated, "I love when people are just into looking how they're supposed to look for the character. I do what the director wants, what the producer wants, and then also what the actor wants, but mainly I have to please the Network."

Although makeup is an artistic process and one that allows the artists to be creative, they are still working for a Network and must stay within the guidelines that the Network envisions.

As for what's next for Miguens following the sad adieu after Fresh Off the Boat Season 6, she does not know.

Currently, her agent is knocking on doors looking for her next gig.

Longevity is the key and most desirable outcome for anyone in the industry, so she hopes to work with a show that can offer her a stable future.

Fresh Off the Boat Family
(ABC)

Her dream would be to work with a period piece.

Specifically set in the '70s in which she was raised because, in her words, "The '70s is cool, man."

Makeup is what she loves, and she expressed how grateful she is to have found something she loves to do.

In her eyes, that's the most important thing in life, "to just find what you love."

Cindy Miguens PLL - Pretty Little Liars
(Disney Style)

She mentioned the possibility of a spin-off for Fresh Off the Boat, following the story of an Indian family that will be introduced in the coming episodes.

Preity Zinta and Vir Das are set to star in the spin-off. Both of whom are well-known actors in the Bollywood scene.

One of the writers for Fresh Off the Boat, Rachna Fruchbom, will be writing the spin-off. So if you're a fan of Fresh Off the Boat you know you'll love the spin-off as well.

Miguens' notes if you haven't seen the most recent Christmas episode of Fresh Off the Boat you really should.

The makeup for the episode is especially intricate hailing from the Victorian Era. If you haven't seen it, don't forget you can always watch Fresh Off the Boat online here via TV Fanatic.

Louis starts to fantasize about passing Cattleman’s Ranch down to Eddie on Season 6 Episode 9 and Jessica still struggles to get on board with Emery’s new acting hobby.

It's a fusion of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and Fresh Off the Boat Season 6 Episode 9 after Louis made it as a contestant on the show.

Jessica, Eddie, and Emery were in the audience of the taping, while Grandma Huang and Evan were on the couch ready for Louis' lifeline call.

Amidst Louis' contemplation of the answer choices, flashbacks were provided of previous interactions that helped him figure out the right answers to Regis Philbin's questions.

Most of the interactions revolved around Louis chatting with Eddie about handing down Cattleman's Ranch to him.

(ABC/ Mitch Haaseth)

Eddie had many suggestions of items to add to the menu, but Louis was especially against his Asian fusion idea of the cow-bao.

Originally Eddie thought it was just because of Louis' need to control everything, but later learned it was because he didn't want to be a stereotype.

Eddie: I have a photographic tongue. I remember every taste.

A common challenge among many American immigrants is how to balance the American culture and their original culture.

Louis and Eddie - Fresh Off the Boat Season 6 Episode 9
(ABC/ Mitch Haaseth)

Louis said it wasn't that he was ashamed of being Chinese or about the Chinese culture, but it was the stereotyping and microaggressions he experienced with the restaurant seller that made him strongly averse to adding anything other than strictly American to the menu.

Microaggressions are so common and as the term would suggest they may be so small and slight that they may not be recognized as racist.

But they are entirely hurtful and racist, and most of all unnecessary.

The American Dream holds such precedence in especially Asian American families and this is a common theme found within the Huang family.

Regis Philbin - Fresh Off the Boat Season 6 Episode 9
(ABC/ Mitch Haaseth)

Their idea of money and success is based on their struggle to come to America in order to make a new life and provide more for their family.

Jessica: The Wheel takes physical skill, Millionaire is just knowing lots of stuff.

🔗 permalink: The Wheel takes physical skill, Millionaire is just knowing lots of stuff.

Jessica's opinion on acting not being a suitable career are valid, and truly any parents concern, but her strict guidelines and hopes of Evan and Emery one day becoming doctors or scientists lie all in her desire for them to be successful.

Success is a completely subjective idea, but in an immigrant family, it seems to remain the same. Making money and a name for yourself.

And the point of the game show fit perfectly within the Asian American's concept of success.

Emery and Eddie successfully point out that their family has acclimated to the country and culture and should not see it as China versus America, but instead as a fusion.

Combining both cultures eliminates the possibility of forgetting their Chinese culture, but still accepting their current culture.

We missed out on a classic lesson from Grandma Huang, but a lesson from Regis Philbin wasn't too far off, either.

Jessica: Don’t worry Louis, money isn’t everything.

Emery: Acting?

Jessica: Acting.

🔗 permalink: Acting.

Eddie and Louis came to a compromise, and Jessica got on board with acting after realizing that although she may not understand Emery's love for it, he does love it.

FOB- Emery Huang - Fresh Off the Boat Season 6 Episode 2
(ABC/Eric McCandless)

Any mother will understand that when it comes to their child's happiness, that's far greater than any passionless success will ever be.

I will give it to Jessica. When she started explaining how her father's persistent lying was the real reason she hated acting, I almost felt bad.

If I'm not mistaken, that was one of the first times we really heard about her parents.

Emery: Honestly Mom, I’m surprised you’re not more on board with acting. It’s basically manipulation.

🔗 permalink: Honestly Mom, I’m surprised you’re not more on board with acting. It’s basically manipulation.

There needs to be an episode that provides backstory to how Jessica was raised and why she is the way she is. Sometimes, I want to know who hurt her!

FOB S6E3 - Jessica - Fresh Off the Boat Season 6 Episode 3
(ABC/Jessica Brooks)

It's important that Fresh Off the Boat tackles these questions and challenges specific to immigrant families.

Albeit, every family can trace their lineage back to immigrants, a lot of people of color have more recent family ties to immigration.

It's an especially important topic in this political climate when immigration has become a point of contention.

Recently the discussion of whether or not Asians can be considered an ethnic minority has seemed to be growing, and I would say that this show does a strong job of offering insight into answering that question.

Louis and Regis - Fresh Off the Boat Season 6 Episode 9
(ABC/ Mitch Haaseth)

This wasn't necessarily an exciting episode since most of the scenes were focused on Louis on the game show, but it did contain many subtleties.

Additional Side Notes:

  • It is ironic watching Jessica talk poorly about acting when she's a character being played by an actress.

  • If "ass" is allowed on the show, but they censor most things Grandma Huang says, it makes me even more curious to know what she could possibly be saying.

  • I wonder if some of those questions were recycled from actual episodes of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. Specifically the computer question, it seems like it could have been a plausible scenario in the early days of computers.

  • How have cow-baos not been invented already?! Somebody better get on that now!
  • Trent is not only his work wife but his lifeline as well. And, of course, Trent would be the one to use the full term of lateral epicondylitis over tennis elbow.

Louis starts to fantasize about passing Cattleman’s Ranch down to Eddie on Season 6 Episode 9 and Jessica still struggles to get on board with Emery’s new acting hobby.

Louis made it on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and is on TV with Regis Philbin.

Eddie, Jessica, and Emery were in the audience but Jessica and Emery got locked out because of re-entry problems.

Louis thought about passing down the restaurant to Eddie, but tried to control the menu options. Eddie worked on adding a new Asian fusion twist on Cattleman's Ranch, but Louis didn't like the idea.

In between Louis' episode of the game show, while he thought back to past memories to answer the questions, we were presented with flashbacks of moments that help him figure out the answers.

Eddie believed Louis was just controlling and being picky about the menu options but realized it was actually because Louis didn't want to be stereotyped into offering Asian cuisine.

Regis paused the show in order for Louis to make up with Eddie and also reminded him that Asian fusion was open-minded and celebrated both cultures.

So Louis concedes and adds cow-bao to the menu.

Meanwhile, Emery taught Jessica how to act in order to get them back into the studio and she came to an agreement that acting was an ok choice of career if it's what he loved.

If you were ever curious about the harsh realities of being a mom, look no further. Fresh Off the Boat Season 6 Episode 8 has you covered.

The days Jessica had always dreaded finally crept up on her. The boys have grown up and would rather spend time with each other than with her. I had no idea siblings went through a phase that allowed them to enjoy each other's presence for more than a few seconds!

Jessica's dose of reality hit when she witnessed the boys walk in after an entertaining grocery store turkey throwdown, without her.

Parents are always warned that the days go slow, but the years go fast, and you never think it'll happen to you until it does. The babies that once couldn't leave your side for even a split second, suddenly want nothing to do with you.

The days Honey is enduring now as a new parent are the days Jessica can't believe have passed.

Honey: At the end of the day children are like silverware. You don’t have to clean them that well, just get the food off.

While Jessica's learned her new role in parenthood, Louis figured out his new role as a consultant.

At the neighborhood meeting, Louis announced his new business, with the name still pending.

The women of the neighborhood didn't hold back when criticizing Louis' lack of success for a business that he thought of not only a few episodes ago.

Though, they did have important criticism and initially helped him jumpstart the business. They used too many terms and concepts leaving me as clueless as Louis.  #womeninSTEM

Their comments and mockery sent him spiraling to try and pick up the pace of his business. He trapped Honey into being his first client and with the fast-growing success of her mommy blog, cleverly named "TMi: True Mommy Insights," he pushed her into becoming a sellout.

A truth about the patriarchy and capitalism? The CEOs of big businesses are men who weren't praised enough by their mothers or wives and seek to fulfill this emptiness by filling their pockets instead.

All jokes aside, Louis' business helped Honey explore a new passion and an outlet that not only allowed her to vent and find her sanity among the trials and hardships of motherhood but also to connect with other parents and put forth a relatable and conversational point of view.

The friendship between Louis and Honey is so pure and I only hope we see more of their dynamic in the future.

Honey: I lost a Ricola in my hair a week ago.

Louis: I saw it fall out yesterday.

🔗 permalink: I saw it fall out yesterday.

Meanwhile, Jessica had lost the battle against the Piazze del Eastview.

Jessica: Why are you all dressed like European hobos?

🔗 permalink: Why are you all dressed like European hobos?

Maybe Jessica needs more friends if her sons are the only other people she's looking to spend time with while her husband and best friend are busy building a blog and a business.

Grandma Huang has been killing it with the advice-giving these past few episodes. To Jessica's dismay when everyone else is taken, her only other choice is to sit on the couch and spend time with Grandma Huang.

Their dynamic is always entertaining because in between the jabs is love and respect. It's their way of communicating with each other since they're too similar for Jessica's own liking.

With the help of Grandma Huang and Louis, Jessica learned that the boys are finding their own interests and in order to spend quality time with them she needed to get off her high horse and connect with their own interests.

Louis and Honey learned a lesson of their own, that it's not good to mix personal life and work.

And now that Louis realized consulting is all about the client's needs and desires he's ready to take on the world of consulting. Here's hoping Louis finds more clients because he's quite successful with the whole business growth model.

Louis: Hey Jessica, brought you some baby food. Thought you might be hungry, but not want to chew.

🔗 permalink: Hey Jessica, brought you some baby food. Thought you might be hungry, but not want to chew.

Seeing Jessica come around in her own way was heartwarming, and I hope the boys find that they will always cherish spending time with her.

Because parenting is all about learning and recovering from mistakes. This is something Jessica will always be learning, that even she can make mistakes.

Additional Side Notes:

  • The self-inflicted view counter conundrum is still something I struggle with today. You'd think that algorithm would've been fixed years ago!

  • Louis' dad puns are so bad they're good. Some honorable mentions include "All About Lou Consulting," "Louinversal Consulting," and "C.S. Louis at the Chronicles of Consulting."

  • I did a double-take every time Louis used Honey's name. For a split second, I forgot he wasn't just using "Honey" as a pet name.

  • The Huang's certainly didn't help the stereotype of bad Asian drivers.

  • Honey looked more like the stereotypical anchorwoman than the actual anchorwoman.

  • We need more people like Honey's in the world. More integrity, less greed.

As the ending of the show nears, I can only hope for the Huang's to end on a great note. I hope Eddie gets into college, Louis' business continues successfully, and Jessica becomes a principal of a school.
