Slashers on TV take things in a different direction, with the story being told over a longer arc.

That doesn't always work, but some slashers have delivered on their promise.

Because we're TV Fanatics, we've rounded up some of the best slashers to hit the small screen.

Check them out below.

Slasher

Slasher has had many homes during its time on the small screen.

It started its life on Chiller before moving to Netflix and currently airs on Shudder, where it enjoys continued success.

It promised lots of death and questions about the killer's identity.

It lived up to that promise.

However, we'd be remiss if we didn't recommend the original season and Guilty Party.

They're old-school slashers, whereas the following three seasons attempt to reinvent the wheel to differing results.

At least you can sample them all! You can catch the series on Shudder and Netflix.

Harper's Island

Harper's Island was way ahead of its time.

It promised a wedding on a remote island, where at least one guest would be killed off each week.

CBS ruined the momentum by banishing it to Saturdays just weeks into its run, leading to confusion from fans and many people missing out on the remainder of the series. That was a huge mistake.

It starred Elaine Cassidy, Christopher Gorham, Katie Cassidy, Cameron Richardson, Richard Burgi, Jim Beaver, and many more familiar faces.

It's a rarity that a slasher is perfect from start to finish, but with a compelling plot, three-dimensional characters, and lots of jump-scares, this one was a hoot.

The kills are comparable to Scream in terms of their creativity, which bodes very well for fans of that franchise.

We'd love a second season, but the first is the gold standard. It's just a shame Harper's Island doesn't get the recognition it deserves.

I Know What You Did Last Summer

While plenty of slasher series are deeply rooted in teen drama, I Know What You Did Last Summer took a more adult approach.

Yes, there was plenty of frothy drama, but the tone was far more mature than we expected going into the series.

The kills were also gruesome, and we were left with more questions than answers throughout I Know What You Did Last Summer Season 1.

Prime Video had plenty of potential to nurture this into a global hit because it managed to outshine many other slasher shows.

Given how it canceled The Wilds, Paper Girls, and more wonderful series, we believe this was a cost-cutting cancellation instead of driven by the quality.

Even if you're concerned about the show not getting a pre-planned conclusion, there's plenty of fun to be had by streaming the series.

The promise of a slasher series based on one of the most iconic movie franchises is a tough sell, but this show killed it — pun intended.

This is a Prime Video original series and is available to watch on the service.

Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin (Max)

Pretty Little Liars was long in the tooth when it ended its run on Freeform.

Spinoffs Ravenswood and PLL: The Perfectionists were canceled after their freshman seasons.

The franchise wasn't as sturdy as executives first thought.

When we first heard about a reboot from the people who brought us Riverdale, there was cause for concern.

Riverdale started strong but became something very different from Riverdale Season 1 to the point that the show was being ridiculed online by the time it ended.

Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin's strength was in its ability to reinvent the wheel.

Having a new crop of liars stalked by a serial killer reinvigorated the franchise and delivered a genuinely chilling entry.

It didn't forget what came before, with the girls visiting Rosewood and the series featuring several nods to the franchise.

Many people wrote Original Sin off, but we're sure they're eating crow right now because Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin delivered a near-perfect slasher series.

It reinvented what we loved about Pretty Little Liars and successfully challenged our expectations every step of the way.

We can only hope the next season is bloodier and more dramatic because it strikes us as the type of show that will only get better.

Scream: The TV Series

When Scream: The TV Series kicked off, it had a bit of an identity crisis.

It didn't know how to blur the lines between movie and TV series, but it gradually got better and hit its stride with Scream Season 2. The stakes were raised, and the killer set pieces were movie-worthy.

With a deadly two-hour Halloween special, we were led to believe there would be more of the Lakewood Six.

How could there not be? We got the ultimate tease for Scream Season 3, but all that came crashing down when MTV announced it would reboot the series with a new cast and plot.

That's great, but we're still awaiting a resolution almost seven years later.

With the Scream franchise delivering record numbers at the box office, it'd be the perfect time to delve back into the world of Emma Duvall, even if it's just a Paramount+ movie.

Knowing that the series reached its full potential by the second season and that it delivered on its promise to translate Scream to a different medium, we deserved more.

One season of this MTV original series is available on Prime Video, and all three are available for purchase online.

Chucky

By the time Cult of Chucky — the seventh movie in the Child's Play franchise — Chucky's presence in pop culture was waning.

Who would have thought that moving to a TV series would bring the franchise back to the good old days?

When Chucky Season 1 premiered in 2021, it took us to Hackensack, New Jersey, where Chucky kicked off a deadly rampage.

Many familiar faces from the movies were present, including Jennifer Tilly as Tiffany.

But the show also brought in a new cast, led by Zackary Arthur as Jake Wheeler.

The series promised to give us a cast of old and new faces, and it successfully blended them to create another chilling entry.

What else could we ask for?

The kills are over-the-top, and Chucky's commentary and breaking of the fourth wall deliver a comedic edge that sets the series apart from everything else.

You can catch this Syfy original airing weekly and on Peacock.

American Horror Story: 1984

We yearn for the days when American Horror Story was watchable.

The last great season was American Horror Story 1984, which focused on camp counselors being picked up one by one.

The cast featured Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, Mathew Morrison, Cody Fern, and more in a serial killer-inspired tale with all the conventions of a great slasher.

It's not a fresh concept, but it kept us on the edge of our seats as we tried to figure out the mystery surrounding Mr. Jingles.

It promised a good old-fashioned slasher over a longer arc, and it will be remembered for years.

Even if you haven't been a fan of the other entries in the AHS franchise, this might be for you.

We promise… this is a nod to the movies from the 1980s you loved.

Dead of Summer

Dead of Summer was another show that was way ahead of its time.

Had the show been a streaming original instead of airing on a dying network like Freeform, there's a good chance it would have secured more of a following.

This one was also a 1980s-set slasher about camp counselors, but there was much more of a mythology here that left us questioning everything until the final moments.

The cast was top-tier, with names like Elizabeth Mitchell, Elizabeth Lail, and Ronen Rubinstein.

The best part of Dead of Summer was its ability to deconstruct horror tropes and challenge our expectations.

The set pieces were breathtaking, and let's just say we were hiding behind the cushion for more than one scene.

Scream Queens

Scream Queens promised to deliver a comedic slasher, and it worked.

The horror-comedy focused on a college campus ravaged by a series of murders.

Far too often, these kinds of shows don't work, but the casting, script, and mystery kept this one going for another season.

The cast featured Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, Jamie Lee Curtis, and more familiar faces.

While the series secured a second season, it became a shell of its former self by shifting to a new location.

Unfortunately, the series ended on an almighty cliffhanger, leaving us to ponder the possibilities.

Let's hope the series gets to wipe the slate clean to return for a third — and final — season. We need to know what happened to Chanel Oberlin.

Spooky season is upon us, TV Fanatics.

Halloween is my favorite time of the year! Between the fun-size candy and endless horror movies, there's a lot of ghoulish treats topping the list.

Horror and spooky-themed TV shows, especially, make this month extra special.

Masked killers, witchy teens, paranormal ghosts from beyond the grave — there's a bevy of eerie TV shows to fill your Halloween hunger.

There are too many to choose from and a lot of options depending on what kind of horror sub-genre you're into it. Not sure where to start? We've got some tales for you.

Below, we've picked out a handful of fun, freaky and spine-tingling shows to get you into the Halloween spirit and kickstart your spooky season.

Author's Note: Only TV shows will be included below. TV Movies and movies on streaming sites won't be mentioned, so you won't see Netflix's Fear Street trilogy or Amazon Prime's Welcome To The Blumhouse on this list.

Slasher (Shudder, Netflix, Chiller, and Super Channel)

The name speaks for itself. Slasher is the perfect nod to the slasher genre of horror films.

This anthology series focuses on a new serial killer each season and a new set of hopeless victims trying to survive until the end.

Slasher is well-written and doesn't shy away from the gore. From the brainless jock to the resourceful Final Girl, each character feels like they're trying to avoid a bloody death at the hands of their killer.

Plus, every season highlights a new tone, and it's easy to jump into. Maybe give the recent season of Slasher Season 4 (titled "Slasher: Flesh & Blood") a shot?

American Horror Story (FX)

American Horror Story is another anthology series that will set your spooky season on fire.

American Horror Story helped to pioneer the format, and now halfway through American Horror Story Season 10, there's a lot of frights for you to catch up on. And just like any horror genre, you can pick the season that's right for you.

Haunted houses, bloody curses, dark asylums, and aliens are a few of the tropes awaiting each story.

The series is a tad inconsistent with delivering pure horror in the later seasons, but when it hits its stride, the eerie chills make it a fun time. Plus, with ten seasons and a spinoff, it's an excellent option for a binge-worthy fix.

Midnight Mass (Netflix)

Midnight Mass is the latest anthology series from the mind of Mike Flanagan.

The series takes place on a small island and focuses on a tight-knit community dealing with religious fanaticism and the supernatural. Chaos eventually threatens to tear everything (and everyone) apart.

Midnight Mass features many familiar elements from a Mike Flanagan-created show: interpersonal drama, a creepy aesthetic, and many "blink and you'll miss it" surprises hiding in the background. Religion plays a connecting thread through the plot and themes, so beware if that is a theme you're not interested in exploring.

Midnight Mass Season 1 is a quick binge with seven episodes, but the momentum rages like a wildfire once it gets going in the second half.

Scream (MTV)

Scream was an underrated gem dealing with the weight of the juggernaut that was the Scream movies.

Say what you will about movie vs. TV, but the adventures in Lakewood offered a suspense-filled slasher whodunnit with lots of fun to spare. The MTV series channeled its own meta-style and paid homage to the movies.

And the cast of characters was a great mix of classic horror archetypes mixed with new depth. (Brooke is a great example of growing beyond her mean girl trope.)

If you're in the mood for a modern take on the slasher genre, Scream would be a great option. Its reboot has its moments, but the first two seasons and Halloween special are the main draws.

The Haunting of Hill House (Netflix)

Just like Midnight Mass, The Haunting of Hill House is peak Mike Flanagan. However, you'll get unrelenting horror and ghostly terror in this mini-series.

The Haunting of Hill House Season 1 takes place within a (you guessed it!) haunted house filled with ghosts. The story focuses on the present and the past, centering on a family dealing with the trauma from their time living at Hill House.

Creepy jumpscares, ghosts hanging around in the background, terrifying twists … this anthology has it all. And, it has well-written characters performed by a talented cast; you can feel their connection and the tension between them as a family. If you're more into supernatural, this is the best of the three Flanagan series.

Make sure you have a light on if you're watching at night. But, don't say we didn't warn you.

Into The Dark (Hulu)

Into The Dark is an interesting entry on this list as it gives you the most horror movie-like experience as a TV show. Each episode is framed around a holiday but in an anthology setting.

A slasher for New Year's Eve? A haunted board game for Halloween? Corrupted killing dolls for Easter?

Into The Dark goes there and plays off the horror tropes we've come to love.

You don't need to watch every episode in chronological order to have a good time or follow the plot. Pick the holidays you feel like watching and jump around to get into the spooky spirit.

The Walking Dead (AMC)

Do you like zombies? Do you want A LOT of zombies? No?!

How about "walkers" then? I joke, but The Walking Dead is the titan for zombie apocalypse fair on TV.

Its spinoffs, Fear The Walking Dead and The Walking Dead: World Beyond, equally deliver that post-apocalyptic vibe you've been craving.

Though, if you're planning to start a series, try with the main entry first. The Walking Dead has many strong seasons, especially in the first half, and great characters like Rick, Glenn, Maggie, Michonne, and more are in the mix.

There are 11 seasons waiting for you if you get hooked on the zombie chaos and drama between the survivors.

Stranger Things (Netflix)

Stranger Things is the perfect nostalgia when you're in the mood for 80s adventures with a modern twist.

Set in Hawkins, Indiana, the series focuses on a ragtag group of kids battling the paranormal and trying to save their missing friends. In the subsequent seasons, the paranormal horrors grow to affect the town and the unsuspecting citizens.

Plus, there's a government conspiracy, equally strong plots with the adults and teens, and great special effects with its monster designs. Seriously, the monsters on Strangers Things would be frightening to face in real life.

There's a reason why this series became (and still is) a cultural phenomenon.

I Know What You Did Last Summer (Amazon Prime)

Just in time for spooky season 2021, we have Amazon Prime's latest horror entry on the list.

I Know What You Did Last Summer's name says it all. This series is the first TV adaptation inspired by the iconic 90s teen slasher film (and the Lois Duncan novel) of the same name.

The story, once again, focuses on a group of teens being stalked by a killer one year later after covering up a death caused by a car accident. Expect to see chills, thrills, and blood spills for your Halloween pleasure.

I Know What You Did Last Summer is perfect if you're in the mood to start a brand new series and join along weekly for each new terror that comes next.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer (The WB and UPN)

Instead of playing victim to the supernatural creatures, jump into the shoes of Buffy Summers and take them down.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer is an amazing cult classic that balances horror elements with witty comedy. The series focuses on a group of teen outsiders as they face everything weird and paranormal that affects their demonic town.

Plus, you have Sarah Michelle Gellar in her iconic role as Buffy, the one chosen slayer in all the world to hunt and kill the vampires.

Great writing, a strong cast, and emotional beats that will tug at your heartstrings. You might think it's a campy entry from its name alone, but the series is so much more. It's one of the best series coming out of the 90s.

True Blood (HBO)

HBO's True Blood is the perfect option if you want more drama mixed into your horror. And plenty of sex and excess to make you blush.

There are many reasons why True Blood became our guilty pleasure summer obsession during its 7-season run.

Between the supernatural elements and the captivating characters, the series kept us on our toes. It also had cheeky writing with characters ready to bite back with their words instead of their fangs.

And, new mysteries plagued the town to keep the seasons interesting, from werewolves to witches to a vampire conspiracy.

Harper's Island (CBS)

Not all horror has to be supernatural or extremely gory. CBS's mini-series, Harper's Island, channeled a classic mix of slasher and Agatha Christie's "And Then There Were None."

The series focused on a wedding party heading to the island to celebrate their big day. Similar murders happened in the past on the island, and as more people disappear, the guests can't help but wonder if the serial killer has returned to enact another string of killings.

Does anyone make it out of the wedding alive? Who is the killer?

You'll have to watch to find out.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (Netflix)

Bring on all the teen drama with a demonic twist!

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina gave a darker side to the classic Archie Comics character. Plenty of magic spells, gore, and darkness to fill your spooky season thirst. The aesthetic alone feels like it's ready for Halloween every episode.

And, it was a different take on the TGIF classic TV series, Sabrina The Teenage Witch.

If you want some witchy fun with a darker Riverdale twist, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina might be right up your alley.

Channel Zero (Syfy)

Think of Channel Zero like Slasher or American Horror Story, but the plots are about creepypastas.

It's another anthology series with self-contained arcs and lots of horror elements. You can choose which set of episodes to watch to follow the relatively short narrative.

Seriously, each season's plot only lasts six episodes!

Go right in with one batch of episodes or try all four seasons. Channel Zero delivered terror and chills with each arc that felt vastly different from the other.

The Twilight Zone (CBS)

Take a trip into the paranormal and explore the unknown in The Twilight Zone.

Whether it's the classic black and white series or the many reboots (like the recent CBS All Access series), The Twilight Zone has hooked viewers for generations. This is the show that has inspired many parodies and cartoon nods.

The Twilight Zone features a new mystery or case of the unknown each week. Sometimes the plot deals with sci-fi, or it's a paranormal oddity ready to deliver a harsh life lesson.

Once you're in, you'll wonder if you'll ever want to stop watching. But that's what happens when you venture into The Twilight Zone. (*Theme music intensifies*)

The X-Files (Fox)

A sci-fi classic that left its mark on the world like no other.

If you're not in the mood for killers, werewolves, or other horror tropes, a trip to a more scientific theme might be it. In this case, it's all about aliens and the paranormal.

Join FBI special agent Mulder and special agent Scully as they tackle cases to prove (or disprove) the truth of the paranormal.

Mulder and Scully are a great team, and they balance each other by providing a lot of truth or skepticism for each case. Plus, there's a fine mix of season-long arcs and one-off "monsters of the week" episodes.

Teen Wolf (MTV)

Teen Wolf is more than just ship-worthy couples and werewolf abs. (Don't get me wrong, it's a big part, but there's so much more!)

Look beyond the high school aesthetic to see a powerful story about small-town citizens fighting against paranormal entities and forming a new werewolf pack — lots of heart, zingers, and supernatural action.

Teen Wolf's special effects are one of its greatest strengths. The transformation from a teen into the wolf is still one of the best scenes for a teen horror show.

Plus, the horror tone comes out in full force, especially with its use of shadows, gore, and creepy music. Teen Wolf does a great job balancing spooky and action.

Ash vs. Evil Dead (STARZ)

Fan of the Evil Dead movie series? Well, we've got the show for you.

Ash vs. Evil Dead is a continuation of the films 30 years later. Ash Williams (the main hero) is back, and he's fighting the forces of evil as they corrupt the world.

This show is all horror-comedy. It doesn't take itself too seriously, so you'll get plenty of laughs in between all the gore and outlandish horror.

Plus, it'll bring back all the nostalgia of the films. Pair this with your Evil Dead movie night to keep the fun going.

Scream Queens (Fox)

Think of Scream Queens like a B-horror movie playing off all the sorority tropes. But there's so much more to the series than just pledge night and a masked killer picking off victims.

Scream Queens is filled with plenty of wit and one-liners to make you smile.

A great cast that includes Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, and Keke Palmer, to name a few, make their characters come alive. And Scream Queens delivers with the camp and horror nods.

There are only two seasons (the sorority massacre and the hospital bloodshed), but by the end of the final episode, you'll be wanting more of this cult classic.

Penny Dreadful (Showtime)

Penny Dreadful adds that dark gothic touch to your spooky season.

The series includes many elements of classic horror monsters and characters, like Count Dracula and Frankenstein's monster, but in a darker and stylish aesthetic. Full iconic horror mixed into a beautifully addictive story.

The plot of Penny Dreadful is one of the main draws as the narrative will hook you in. However, the twists, the bloodshed, and the creature effects bring this show to the next level.

Locke & Key (Netflix)

Want something spooky for you and the family?

Netflix's Locke & Key might be the right choice. Most of the story focuses on three young siblings discovering magical keys in their home that give them powers or uncover secrets.

Locke & Key will sometimes feel more like an adventure series, especially with its fantasy effects and sibling shenanigans. Though, as with any spooky show, there's always a sinister twist lurking within the tale.

It's a great one if you want less of the scares and more of the adventure.

Nancy Drew (The CW)

You might be wondering, "Why Nancy Drew?" And to that, I say, "Why not!"

Nancy Drew's current tale on The CW focuses on many cases that involve the supernatural or curses within the quiet town of Horseshoe Bay. During Nancy Drew Season 1 alone, there's a poltergeist haunting the main cast and pushing them to solve a murder.

We're not even getting into the other terrors, like a sea creature with a death curse or demonic demons.

Come for the paranormal cases, but you'll stay for the excellent writing and the chemistry between the Drew Crew.

What We Do In The Shadows (FX)

So much comedy. So many laughs. So many goofs.

What We Do In The Shadows is a well-acted and well-written horror-comedy. The laughs will keep coming as you follow the misadventures of these vampires living in the modern world.

Similar to some other entries on this list, a horror-comedy can be the perfect fix for your spooky season needs. It's not always about the haunts and terrors that go bump in the night.

What We Do In The Shadows might be just what you're looking for during spooky season (or beyond).

Goosebumps (YTV and Fox Kids)

If you're a 90s kid, Goosebumps will bring a warm flicker to your jack-o-lantern heart.

Watched the series before? Jump back in for a rewatch.

New to the series? Oh, you're in for a treat!

Based on the classic books by R. L. Stine, each episode of Goosebumps highlights one of the plots from his books. It's a great way to catch up on the novels if you don't have the time to read the Goosebumps books.

Plus, it's so deliciously nostalgic. The 90s kept us fed with horror shows for kids.

Are You Afraid Of The Dark? (YTV and Nickelodeon)

Another great horror kids show from the 90s. (Just like I said above, it was so perfect.)

The series focused on a group of kids called "The Midnight Society," as they met in the woods at night to tell scary stories. The tales would cover everything spooky, from vampires to ghosts to werewolves to scary clowns.

Are You Afraid Of The Dark? has two iterations you could choose depending on what you're in the mood for watching.

If you want something episodic to jump around, go for the original series from the 90s. Each episode will cover a new tale and offer something different per watch.

Though, if you want a connected plot, go for the 2019 or 2020 Nickelodean reboots. These mini-series cover one big mystery each season and include a new cast of characters in their version of The Midnight Society.

Supernatural (The WB and The CW)

Supernatural is a bit of a time commitment. We're talking 15 seasons of demon-fighting glory here!

However, you'll get a large selection of episodes to fill your horror-loving heart.

Supernatural is a simple show at its core: two brothers on the road together defeating demons and solving supernatural cases. Werewolves, zombies, vampires. If you can think of a horror monster, the Winchester brothers have probably faced it.

What you'll also get is well-written characters, plenty of action, and 15-seasons' worth of character development between the brothers. All the positives are there to balance out the commitment.

The Purge (USA Network)

Just like the movie series, The Purge TV show hits many of the same beats.

You'll get a night of bloody fun, plenty of action with people trying to kill each other, and an alternate world where this holiday exists. It's a great companion piece to the installments in the main film series.

Both seasons focus on two very different themes: The Purge Season 1 is all about the time while in The Purge, and The Purge Season 2 highlights the after-effects in the year leading up to the bloody night.

If you want more Purge in your life, add this into the mix to start the spooky season countdown.

Dead of Summer (Freeform)

Friday The 13th. Fear Street Part Two: 1978. Sleepaway Camp.

What do these have in common? They're all slashers set at a summer camp.

Dead of Summer captures the 80s vibe of a teen camp slasher. Think of it like a B-horror flick but extended for ten episodes.

The thrills are addictive, and the characters fit into all the cheesy horror tropes. It's an underrated gem that will give you all the slasher treats you want with your tricks.

Hannibal (NBC)

Brace yourselves, TV Fanatics. This might be the show that pleasantly surprises you based on its writing, editing, and overall aesthetic.

For many fans and audiences, Hannibal has been deemed one of the best horror TV shows. (No pressure with your expectations.)

Hannibal centers on FBI profiler Will Graham and his team-up with iconic horror villain Dr. Hannibal Lecter during his investigations. There's a fascinating balance between solving the cases and Hannibal trying to manipulate everyone around him to achieve his goal.

You never know what Hannibal (or the rest of the cast) will do next. The show has a way of keeping you on your toes.

Lovecraft Country (HBO)

Lovecraft Country only lasted one season, but it was a strong arc filled with gripping drama and monstrous terrors.

Set in the 1950s, Lovecraft Country Season 1 centered on a group taking a road trip searching for a missing parent. Along the way, the group deals with racism, small towns, and dangerous monsters that threaten to kill them.

If you're a fan of the works of H. P. Lovecraft and the Cthulhu vibe, Lovecraft Country might be for you. Many of the monsters and tropes were inspired by Lovecraft.

Plus, the terror alone will pull you in!

Van Helsing (Syfy)

Let me say this upfront: Van Helsing isn't the most consistent series on this list.

Between the vampire lore, the deaths, and a mix of magic, this post-apocalyptic series goes all over the place. But, it owns every minute of its outlandish action and drama.

Van Helsing doesn't take itself too seriously. Don't get me wrong though, the show has a serious plot, and the cast performs it amazingly. However, everyone involved knows exactly what kind of show they're making.

Van Helsing is an off-the-wall and thrilling horror drama that throws everything at you. Prepare for this to be your next cult classic favorite.

Sweet Home (Netflix)

Need a new obsession now that you're done bingeing Squid Game Season 1?

Try Sweet Home, an apocalyptic horror set in South Korea. The series focuses on a group of residents trapped within an apartment building as monsters try to wipe out humanity.

The terrifying creatures are some of its biggest draws. The monsters terrify and rip through the building, hunting down the residents to no end. But, it's a strong drama with well-defined characters too.

No need for music to join this monster mash.

Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated (Cartoon Network)

Yes, this is a cartoon. And yes, this is a cartoon aimed at children, so you won't get any blood or guts here.

On the other hand, what you will get is one of Scooby-Doo's best series to date.

Mystery Inc. is in peak form as the iconic members deal with new foes and iconic enemies terrorizing unsuspecting towns. Plus, this is a serialized show, which means the characters have overarching plots and developments.

This isn't like your typical Scooby-Doo cartoon. Every Scooby-Doo cartoon is amazing and loved, but if we had to recommend one, place this one higher on your list.

Freeform decided not to renew the horror drama for a second season.

While the US is watching horror unfold on election night, ABC is doling out bad news.

First we received word that Conviction is a goner. While they'll produce all 13 episodes, that will be the end of that.

Now we learn our fun in the 80s was one and done. 

Really, though, it's not a surprise. Not only were the ratings abysmal this past summer (dead was a great title), but there was a conclusion. That's a lot better than we get from a lot of shows.

If there had been a second season, it would have likely gone back to the 70s and checked in with Elizabeth Mitchell's character as a teen, so a whole new cast, etc.

And I really believe had the demand for a second season been there, it would have been granted.

33 TV Shows That Take Us Back in Time

I had the pleasure of taking at length with Freeform President Tom Ascheim at an event for their upcoming series Beyond during New York Comic Con on the day Stitchers was renewed. 

The efforts they're going through as a network to really listen to viewers and understand what series are hits and which are misses are impressive. All I can say is if you want your voice heard, make it heard.

Other series that didn't make the Freeform cut recently include Guilt, Kevin At Work and Recovery Road. Stitchers, as noted above, was recently granted a third season. 

Shadowhunters returns for its second season on January 2.

Beyond, a sci-fi entry with hints of Stranger Things, also premieres on January 2 and all episodes will be available binge watching on the Freeform app and Hulu on the same night.

Dead of Summer Season 1 Episode 10 found the campers all reunited, some in zombie form (the headless Blotter was a little too much, though), and had Jessie running for her life from Amy/Malphus, who couldn't leave as long as a part of Holyoke's soul lived in Jessie.

Below, TV Fanatics Yana Grebenyuk, Allison Nichols, and Caralynn Lippo discuss the killer finale, the fate of the survivors, their hopes for potential future seasons, and more!

React to Amy's killer game of hide and seek.

Yana: I was honestly worried for all of them. Her creepy killer antics never wavered and I was expecting them all to be killed. It was very American Psycho like which I appreciated. I also really enjoyed that we saw some familiar faces, I didn't know how much I needed that until they appeared. It's nice that they had an ending for each character, no matter when they were killed off. 

Allison: I enjoyed it. I wish we saw more of our fallen friends though. It could have been exciting to watch Cricket try to kill Alex, instead of just having Amy being the one to deliver the fatal blows. Also, why did Alex think a tiny knife would do anything to protect against an axe? Come up with a better plan, dude.

Caralynn: It was very tense! I was also expecting Cricket, Joel, and Deb to have more action since they reappears but they were basically just zombies which was disappointing. 

And then there were three. Jessie, Blair, and Drew. Did they really deserve to survive out of everyone else?

Yana: Yes. It made sense for certain characters to die, specifically Garrett because they needed someone to protect that camp and he was perfect for the job since the start. Jessie was the pure soul that had to save the town and that survivor girl always makes it.

What I liked most was that none of the survivors were white. It's that usual white savior trope that we have gotten used to when it comes to the slasher genre, so it was nice to see this change. 

Allison: I was a little surprised Blair and Drew survived, but I'm glad Jessie wasn't the only one left standing. I like Garrett ending up being the protector. I am curious if he ended up kinda like Keith where he can appear human from time to time or if Garrett's something else all together. I have a lot of questions about the lake people.

Caralynn: Like Yana, I really loved that they purposefully flipped the script with who typically survives these horror scenarios. It also made sense to me that Garrett died, given that his father's death haunted him and he's been in a protector role all season. When Blair and Drew showed up at camp at the same time Garrett reappeared,

I knew Garrett was dead and assumed Blair and Drew would also have been revealed to be dead in the end (like that Amy killed them offscreen when they returned), but I was pleasantly surprised that those two had a happy ending.

I didn't care about Alex so I figured he'd die. His sacrifice didn't redeem him for me though, what a silly way to go – fending off a demon with an axe using a switchblade.

What did you think of the episode's ending? Are further dark spirits lurking at Camp Stillwater?

Yana: Definitely. Both the light and dark spirits went back into the lake, order is restored but nothing was killed off. Just like in the beginning of the season everything is okay because no one is trying to bring back any of the spirits but there's always that possibility if somebody comes back with a motive, they can stir it all up again.

Allison: There are definitely dark spirits still lurking. Like Yana said, light and dark spirits went into the lake. Evil was defeated, for now, but it's not gone. I am very interested in Camp Stillwater, and how it became so supernaturally charged.

Caralynn; I was a little iffy on whether Malphas is dead or just re-banished to the lake. Whether it's Malphas or other dark spirits, Stillwater almost definitely still has secrets and dangers yet to be uncovered.

If Season 2 happens, what do you think is so special about Deb's year at Stillwater that they'd go back to 1970 and revisit it for the entire season?

Yana: That's when it all started, isn't it?  I'm not sure if it's official but I assume that's the year when someone started to dive back into this mysterious evil at the camp. But what struck me is that Deb was involved and yet can't remember? Something big must have happened and their memories were wiped away? How and why?

Allison: I feel like 1970 is a good time to go back because we're familiar with Deb and Keith. Also, there's already this mystery built in of what Deb got involved with back then. The Camp has probably always had evil and supernatural forces, even way back to its first year, 1924, because the lake is where the spirits come from, and the lake has been around way longer than the camp.

Caralynn: It makes sense to jump back to 1970 because like Allison said, we know Deb and Keith already (though I might find it hard to get invested in those 2 particular characters, given that we already know exactly how and when they die).

I've heard others mention that Deb might be Amy's biological mother, somehow, and the timeline does match up perfectly for Deb to have conceived a child while at camp that summer in 1970. So maybe we'll see the circumstances of that.

Final thoughts about the season?

Yana: I loved this show and this season from start to finish. It had real twists and turns, they took the tropes and flipped them on all of us.

They also made sure that we knew more about each character, and their backstory was never what we thought it was in the beginning. (Except for Blair. That one flashback just wasn't enough and I am still kind of pissed about that). 

The characters weren't one dimensional and the show had an aesthetic that I adored. I really hope they get picked up for seasons two and three, because the writers have some brilliant ideas going forward.

Allison: I enjoyed it. It had some issues, but overall it was a fun, campy show. I hope that they mix up the structure if they go forward because the flashbacks didn't always work for me.

Caralynn: The absence of Blair's backstory was glaring, to me, and a big problem I had with the season. He was important enough to be one of the three survivors and yet didn't warrant a flashback episode? Kind of silly, but I guess they only had 10 episodes ordered and needed to fit everything in somehow.

I also had an issue with some of the corniness (it was just too much sometimes) and laughably bad decision making. I also just simply never cared about several of the characters – Joel and Alex, in particular, never made an impact on me.

On Dead of Summer Season 1 Episode 10, Jessie is tasked with the most stressful game of Marco Polo she'll ever play in her life with Amy chasing after her with that crazed look and sharpened ax.

Amy: It’s no fun when you don’t play, Jessie. WHERE’S YOUR CAMP SPIRIT?

And then there were three.

After a summer of heartbreak, death, and betrayal, Camp Stillwater's desperate, dark, demonized version of The Hunger Games left three counselors standing.

Yet seemingly the two out of three were just filler characters for the summer.

Drew and Blair, after returning the children to safety, went back to Camp Stillwater after yielding a warning from Anton that their friends needed help. Unfortunately, only Jessie was able to be saved.

Alex: What are you talking about?

Amy: He put the last piece of his soul inside of you. So now I can’t leave until it’s destroyed.

Alex. Why did you have to play the hero now? Was it seeing Blotter's head as a makeshift tetherball that brought feelings of resentment and the need to prove yourself? Why couldn't you do that without taking an ax to the heart in a desperate attempt to save Jessie's life?

I'd say he more than made up for lacing Blotter's bottle with acid by inadvertently saving the entire world by saving Jessie's life. Alexi returned; he wasn't Alex Powell, strong and "American," in that moment. He was Alexi, his father's son, a son that his father could've finally been proud of.

And poor Garrett. His death led him to his father's arms once again, but now his mother is left behind without anyone, and his relationship with Jessie that was just beginning is gone.

Amy, my deadly, naive, evil favorite. Before this episode, I would've wished for Amy to find her happy ending and a life free of pain.

But Amy brought the pain upon herself and this episode proved how psychotic she really was before the blunt force trauma that killed her was administered. The deadliest camp game ever commenced, and Amy was running around killing people, including 4 police officers, with her ax.

She would've stopped at nothing to leave camp with Malphas in tow, which doesn't quite make sense considering she kept calling Camp Stillwater home. Wouldn't she have wanted to stay and build a life for herself there if that was the case?

Nothing is sadder than Cricket's death. Still. Nothing is.

Blair: It’s gonna be me and you forever, isn’t it?

Cricket: Pretty much. I hate to break it to you, but you’re stuck with me.

How we wish that Cricket and Blair could've gone on their road trip to find themselves and happiness after camp, but things don't always work out as planned. It's great that Blair and Drew survived, but they were two of the least developed characters all season. Blair didn't even have a flashback episode.

They weren't involved with any of the crazy ritual stuff, except the seance, but they survived out of everyone? Everyone besides Blotter would've made better candidates to stay alive because they actually had to do something to stay alive.

Joel. Sweet, camera-obsessed Joel that saved the day from the grave as his corpse was chasing Jessie around. His filming habits were quite perverse, especially at the beginning of the season as we thought he was recording inappropriate moments with Deb.

His camera ultimately stopped Malphas though, which is just a shock to everyone. In a way, Joel avenged his brother's suicide by taking down the demons that tormented him and drove him to that point.

Deb, what did you do?

Amy had something on you, or rather Malphas did, but what? Why is your time at Camp Stillwater as a counselor worth going back and revisiting as the entirety of Season 2? What darker secrets could this camp hold besides the dark spirits?

Many suspect Deb of being Amy's mother, her real mother, and that Amy was adopted which is why she didn't feel like part of that family that she murdered.

A good theory, but even better would be that Malphas was her father. That would explain the connection to the lake when she first arrived. Maybe Malphas possessed Keith on the night that they did the deed?

Could that be why Keith's spirit was at camp, even though he died miles away in a hotel room?

Garrett’s father: Nothing happens by accident.

Jessie's character development may be the most shocking twist of the entire summer.

Everyone hated Jessie from the moment we met her. The stereotypical bad girl act didn't do wonders for creating fans, especially as she was paired against "innocent" Amy. But the switch in their characters was stunning.

Who would've suspected Jessie to be the innocent one? The one to save the day and stop a demon that had been tormenting Camp Stillwater for over 100 years?

Jessie did what she had to do, again, and stayed alive, killed Amy, and killed Malphas. In the process, she lost Garrett, the possible love of her life, but she gained two lifelong friends that will always understand what she went through, and the strength to turn in her mother and take back her rightful place at university.

If given a Season 2, the show will follow Deb's time at Camp Stillwater in 1970, but even more interesting is the potential for Season 3. The producers mentioned that Season 3 would potentially take place in 2004 with one of these survivors taking over as Camp Leader.

Who do you think it would be? My guess would be not Jessie. Place yourself in Jessie's shoes and ask whether you'd ever want to return to the place where you died, were chased all around the grounds trying to stay alive, and killed someone with an ax.

More than likely it would be Blair coming back to reunite with Cricket in some way, just by being at the place that she died.

There's so much potential for the slightly cheesy, yet shocking horror television series to provide great stories and shocks if given more seasons, so let's hope that Freeform decides to give this series another chance to build up.

After all, it's an anthology, and if it's anything like American Horror Story, ratings usually get better as the series progresses and the writers settle down a bit.

Revealing Amy as the secret helper of Malphas, and the killer of Cricket and friends, was the biggest shock we've seen on television in a long time.

Below, TV Fanatics Allison Nichols, Yana Grebenyuk, and Caralynn Lippo discuss that shocking Amy reveal, the trajectory of the final episode, and whether Malphas can be stopped.

React to Amy being evil.

Allison: I really loved this twist. I didn't see it coming, and it made Amy a lot more interesting. 

Yana: Amy's story gained so much traction from that twist. And kudos to Elizabeth Lail who really sold it. 

Caralynn: Elizabeth Lail gave her best performance of the season during this episode. The whole "possessed person isn't actually innocent/pure" twist is one of my absolute favorites in horror, and it really worked to salvage the character of Amy, who was pretty lame and uninteresting all season.

Further thoughts on Jessie’s character progression?

Allison: I still have a lot of questions. Did Holyoke communicate with her because she was pure? I enjoyed watching her take charge of the purification/exorcism after Holyoke died. She held the group together.

Yana: I can't wait to see why Jessie plays this big a part in the exorcism and how she got to be the pure one. This trope switch between the girls was a pleasant surprise that I respect the writers for. It's about time that the roles were switched because this whole ''chosen and pure white girl'' isn't working anymore.

Caralynn: 100% what Yana said. I'm thrilled that they swapped the expected roles, making Jessie our unlikely hero and Amy our villain. It makes the story so much more unique and interesting. 

Can Malphas/Amy be stopped?

Allison: I'm honestly not sure. We haven't really looked into how to kill Amy/Malphas. We've only tried to save Amy's soul. There has to be something in Holyoke's book about killing Malphas. Side note: why did that girl from Amy's school suddenly show up to say that Amy isn't who she says she is? I don't understand what was going on with that. Why wait until now to say something?

Yana: Malphas maybe, but Amy is evil inside all on her own. It looks like Malphas taking over just helped her stay strong and she couldn't die when Garrett shot her, but take away the demon and she is still her. Amy wasn't possessed when she killed her family, her friend or the other campers so she could stay her murderous self even without being the vessel.

Caralynn: Malphas will probably be exorcised and sent straight back to hell, but I don't see him being defeated permanently. As for Amy, the season will probably end with her being killed after the others exorcise Malphas from her.

That, or maybe thrown into jail/a psychiatric hospital (if they want to leave open the option for Amy to show up in a future season as a Michael Myers-esque villain). Actually, I can totally see the latter happening if they skip forward to a present day season. OK, I'll stop fanfiction-ing now.

Final words for Deb?

Allison: Thanks for bringing all these kids to Camp Stillwater for a fun summer of blood and death. Seriously though, Deb always looked out for her campers and counselors. She was willing to sacrifice herself to save everyone else.

Yana: What's with the mask?! Why do you have it and what did you forget that Amy wanted you to remember? What happened in 1970? And thank you for saving the kids obviously.

Caralynn: Poor Deb! What an awful, sudden demise. I really what to know exactly what happened in 1970. I expect Deb had some kind of nefarious dealings with Malphas herself — otherwise how would Amy know what went down in 1970? It was definitely Malphas who knew, speaking through Amy.

What do you hope to see on the season finale?

Allison: I'm ready for a bloodbath. I'm talking Amy sauntering around camp with an ax ready to chop more people up. I can't wait to see when everyone realizes that Amy can't be saved and that, even without Malphas, she's murderous.

Yana: Amy running around with an ax, lots of blood and a chaotic hunt. The last episode ended on a very very high note so it's their responsibility to raise the bar even higher. I'd also like to see Blair's backstory once and for all, but it looks like he rode off into the sunset with Drew so I wouldn't count on it.

Caralynn: I, for one, would really like to see Drew and Blair actually be involved with the action. It's cool that they get the love story of the season and everything, but I just don't get why they've pushed those two to the side so much ever since Cricket's death. The whole camp-is-family thing would seem to necessitate that EVERYONE needs to come together to defeat Amy.

I'm hoping for literally everyone (including the deceased counselors) to make an appearance in the finale, banding together to defeat Amy/Malphas. Sort of like the ending of Thirteen Ghosts (spoilers for a decade-plus old movie, sorry, folks).

When Holyoke disintegrated, he placed the last part of his spirit into Jessie, the last bit of light, meaning that both Jessie and Amy could not leave the grounds until the other was dead.

A game of cat and mouse arises as Amy, who has Cricket, Joel, Deb, and Blotter on her side, chase Jessie, Alex, and Garrett around Camp Stillwater, ax in tow.

Only Jessie survives this deadly game, but not without the help of returning campers Drew and Blair, who help trick Amy into failing at her own game. The last bit of pure water was used to cage her and Jessie finished Amy with Holyoke's hymn (thanks Joel and his camcorder!) and Amy's ax to the head.

As the only three remaining campers, Jessie, Drew, and Blair leave to restart their lives outside of camp, but not without the memory of their fellow fallen campers that now reside in Lake Stillwater and look over the camp now. Jessie begins school after turning in her mother, and Blair and Drew go on the road trip that Cricket and Blair had planned.

All was well.

I think we can all say after Dead of Summer Season 1 Episode 9 that we will never trust a pretty blonde girl ever again, right?

Turns out, Amy wasn't possessed after all. At least her behavior wasn't. SHE was the person who killed Cricket, Blotter, and Joel for Malphus, and now, Deb, too.

Malphus/Amy: I guess I’ll have to do this myself.

That has to be one of the best plot twists in recent TV history. The girl that we all thought was innocent, that was unfairly being persecuted by Holyoke, was actually the one trying to summon Malphus. Who would've suspected her?

My disappointment stems from the fact that Amy was my favorite for all of the reasons that she decided to go down this dark path.

Amy didn't have a family, she didn't have a home. She was searching for that home, for people to call a family, and to feel whole inside. 

My relation to these feelings are what irritates me the most about this reveal, but nonetheless, it's a good reveal. For all of those reasons, Amy went down the path she did, and hurt the people she did.

Malphus was the family she had been waiting for her entire life; her role as the vessel probably resonated with her from a young age as she felt that missing part of her looking to be fulfilled.

She wasn't an innocent from the moment we met her.

Amy killed her family as a child for keeping her trapped, and when Deb wouldn't let her into Camp Stillwater, she killed her friend by letting go of her hand as she fell off of the roof. This girl has been a psychotic sociopath her entire life. Where are the Criminal Minds profilers when you need them?

Elizabeth Lail deserves all the awards in the world for her performance just in this episode. She played Malphus, "innocent" Amy, Amy possessed by Malphus, and crazed Amy, and there was a difference between all of them.

What was the girl that saw Amy kill her friend doing at Camp Stillwater? She warned Deb that Amy wasn't who she said she was, but she was weeks too late. Why now? What happened that caused her to warn them after weeks away?

Meanwhile, Deb, Blair, and Drew all attempted to save the children.

Deb: The second you get going, you don’t stop. Promise?

Too bad Deb lost her life in order to save the kids. But perhaps it was for the best, according to Keith's spirit. She allowed the vessel to enter Camp Stillwater and take control of Malphus.

Will Drew and Blair make it to safety with the kids? Speaking of which, why didn't we get a Blair flashback episode, yet we had two Amy episodes? Was Blair really just the token gay character for a Freeform show? Is there some other secret that's going to attack us in the season finale that will change Blair's character?

Poor Jessie. Nine weeks ago, I would've never sympathized with Jessie, but damn, this girl has had it bad. She saved Amy's life twice – a killer's life TWICE – and she died because of it.

She sacrificed herself to save someone that never wanted to be saved; someone that called Malphus from her corpse. Luckily, Jessie actually was the innocent vessel that could kill Malphus and withstand it. 

Malphus/Amy: Shut your mouth, bitch.

On Dead of Summer Season 1 Episode 10, it's all for themselves as Killer Amy is hunting them all down with her magic ax.

From the preview, it looks like The Hunger Games are taking place at Camp Stillwater, and Amy is winning. Will she kill all of the tributes before they find a way to rid Stillwater of Malphus?

Seeing as Dead of Summer will have a different story, time, and location if given a Season 2, this next episode is crucial. How are they going to wrap this up? Will the demon win?

Meanwhile, Deb, Blair, and Drew attempt to save the kids and get away from Camp Stillwater, but when a spirit stops them by blinding the bus with blood, the driver is killed, and Deb leaves the bus to be the kids' savior. But, after the kids are saved, Deb herself loses her life ot Malphus and his helper.

His helper being Amy, who was never really possessed in the first place. She invited him, she killed Blotter, Cricket, Joel, everyone, all of her own accord. After feeling trapped her entire life, she killed her parents and brother, her friend that we thought fell off of the roof when actually Amy let go of her, and she came to Camp Stillwater feeling drawn to the demon inside of the lake.

If only they'd listened to Holyoke and killed her.
