The Raza will no longer be traveling through space and time with its crew.

According to TV Line, Syfy has pulled the plug on the addictive drama after just three seasons on the network. The series followed six individuals who woke up on a spaceship known as the Raza.

They assumed the names one through six because they did not know anything about their lives before that moment.

It was an interesting set-up for a series and TV Fanatics connected with the storylines and the colorful characters. Fans enjoyed that it was different to the usual sci-fi fare.

The series had a talented cast that boasted the likes of Melissa O'Neil, Anthony Lemke, Alex Mallari Jr., Jodelle Ferland and Roger Cross.

Executive producer Joseph Mallozzi released a statement via a blog post

"It is with great sadness that I confirm the news. Syfy has cancelled Dark Matter after three seasons," the post begins.

"To say that I’m incredibly disappointed would be an understatement. I’ll save my comments and field your questions in a future blog entry."

"For today, I just want to extend a heartfelt thanks to my amazing crew, my wonderful cast, and to all of you, our incredible fans."

"You all deserved better," Mallozzi concludes.

A Final Attempt - Dark Matter Season 3 Episode 12
(SyFy)

Dark Matter Season 3 Episode 13 will now serve as the series finale, and it did not offer much of an ending for fans of the series.

It ended with Six detonating a blink drive in the Marauder inside the shipyard. In the process, it seemed like he killed himself in the process.

After that, sinister looking black spaceships appeared out of nowhere and the show cut to black.

Unfortunately, we will never know.

Dark Matter Season 3 averaged 0.6 million viewers and a 0.2 rating among adults 18-49. This was down 12 percent in the demo vs. Dark Matter Season 2

It was on the lower end of the ratings spectrum for Syfy's, but fellow Friday show, Wynonna Earp clinched a renewal for Season 3 recently with lower ratings.

Uniting Enemies - Dark Matter
(Stephen Scott/Dark Matter Series 3/Syfy)

Wynonna Earp Season 2 averaged just 0.5 million viewers and a 0.1 rating. Fellow Friday show, Killjoys has yet to be renewed or canceled.

If Killjoys does get canceled, it would appear that the network is cleaning house and getting rid some of its older shows.

Over to you, Dark Matter Fanatics. What do you think of the news?

Sound off below!

The season closed in suitably explosive and ominous fashion with Dark Matter Season 3 Episode 13, though it lacked anything in the way of subtlety.

The post Dark Matter Season 3 Episode 13 Review: Nowhere to Go appeared first on TV Fanatic.

If you ever thought that this series lacked in the way of massive space battles, then Dark Matter Season 3 Episode 13 almost definitely made up for it with the huge dust-up at the end.

Furthermore, the dramatic climax featured the fulfillment of yet another one of Future Five's warnings/predictions (in this case, the Black Ships).

All that being said, I can't help but feel that "Nowhere to Go" seemed almost hastily written, with events happening because they were required to happen for the plot to progress.

Uniting Enemies - Dark Matter
(Stephen Scott/Dark Matter Series 3/Syfy)

In a move that likely surprised no one, Two did not kill Ryo despite the many, many reasons to do so. Nor did she consider dumping him at the nearest GA facility and let them deal with him.

Teku was lucky he called when he did, or else Two wouldn't have vacillated long enough. Though Ryo clearly had plot armor on his side.

Two [about Ryo]: He has things to answer for! He’s a tyrant, a mass-murderer!

Teku: A ruler who had to make hard decisions.

Two: He attacked us, stole from us, and more importantly, he bears some responsibility for the death of our friend.

Three: Not to make this all about me, but he also sent an assassin who tried to kill me. Repeatedly!

🔗 permalink: Not to make this all about me, but he also sent an assassin who tried to kill me. Repeatedly!

I will say this for Ryo: I liked him more in his closing moments, when he coolly took down Possessed Two, than I have for literally this entire season.

Teku's excuse-making for Ryo's failed rule (which Two actually called Ryo on here, thank goodness!) did not improve my opinion of Emperor Ryo or that plotline.

Nor, for that matter, did this episode do any favors for Teku's character. Where he started out a contrary but loyal voice, here he just became a plot device, delivering the Ishida ships to the big battle.

Speaking of plot devices: Alt-Portia just happened to be hanging around in the exact right time and place to stun Three, then hung around for him to wake up, and then flew away with him in tow… why?

Certainly not out of the goodness of her heart. She certainly never seemed that sentimental, so why would she bother saving Three? Other than so Anthony Lemke can return next season, I mean.

So, why get Three out of the way? Because he would have known something was wrong with Two, who was possessed by the extradimensional alien.

Basically, they used Fridge Logic in Alt-Portia removing Three in order to avoid Fridge Logic to explain how Two's possession would go unnoticed.

Rather more pleasing was the return of Alt-Wexler. His light-hearted banter provided a much-needed relief from all the direness and gloom. I hadn't even realized how serious the mood had become all the time until he popped up again.

To be fair, it's a matter of opinion, but I honestly wouldn't be opposed to him returning as a main character next season. He's not mostly useless like Adrian Maro, but he's not an overpowered super-fighter like Solara or Nyx.

27 Marvelous Men of Summer TV

As soon as Possessed Two suggested blowing up the blink drive to destroy the station with a tear in the fabric of space-time, it became painfully obvious that the aliens were going to use it to create a portal into our universe.

Really, they couldn't have broadcast that more blatantly if they put up a neon sign and brought in Admiral Ackbar to shout, "It's a trap!" to the whole galaxy.

Even the fact that Two was possessed was pretty well obvious as soon as they revealed that the woman left alone in the room with her was possessed.

With the season closed out, Dark Matter left many unresolved arcs and stories, including (but not limited to): the pending android rebellion, Sarah and Three, Five and her sister, Two's daughter (seriously, family issues galore here, folks!)…

Finally, let's take a moment of silence for Six and the blink drive. And the Marauder, too. Unless serious shenanigans happen, all three are history.

I'm not sure if Six was ever anyone's favorite character on this show, but he still brought a different energy and a particular morality. As for the blink drive, its MacGuffin status provided many episode plots – though, really, there were more an enough reasons to destroy the thing for good.

And that's all for Dark Matter Season 3, folks! You can always watch Dark Matter online. Be sure also to share your thoughts on this episode in the comments section below!

Faced with the prospect of executing Ryo, Two hesitates long enough to be interrupted by a call from Teku, who informs her that he and a fleet of ships filled with Ishida loyalists escaped Zairon and they want their emperor back.

As a show of good faith, he gives the coordinates of the alternate Marauder piloted by Boone, who had previously captured Two. The coordinates leads the crew to Ferrous Corp's massive secret shipyard, Project Phoenix.

They contact Commander Truffaud of Mikkei, who provides them with a white hole device.

Two, Three, and Six pilot the Marauder, equipped with the blink drive, to drop off the white hole device and flee. Unfortunately, the device does not work, and the blink drive is jammed when they try to escape.

They are captured, and Two is separated for questioning about the blink drive. Three and Six, meanwhile, are interrogated by a Ferrous goon and a surprise alt-Wexler, who quickly reveals himself as working for Mikkei.

Wexler frees Three and Six. Six goes for Two, while Three and Wexler overload the jamming field preventing them from jumping. On the way out, however, Three is shot by alt-Portia, who captures him as the others escape.

Two calls upon ships from both Mikkei and Ishida to attack the shipyard while it's vulnerable. But she's secretly been possessed by an interdimensional alien.

As the attack begins, alt-Portia and Three flee in the alternate Marauder.

Possessed-Two suggests they overload the blink drive to destroy the shipyard. Six volunteers to pilot the Marauder in a suicide mission, over Five's objections.

The Android, incapacitated by Possessed-Two, manages to warn Five, but not soon enough to stop Six. Five frees Ryo, who stops Possessed-Two, but the drive detonates, creating a massive interdimensional portal with alien ships pouring through.

The series returned to its least-interesting storyline of the season with Dark Matter Season 3 Episode 12, resulting in a lot of mixed feelings.

The post Dark Matter Season 3 Episode 12 Review: My Final Gift to You appeared first on TV Fanatic.

]]>
Mixed feelings, thy name is Dark Matter Season 3 Episode 12. While this season overall has featured a number of strong stories and plot lines, Ryo and his time of Zairon definitely hasn't been one of them.

Given that "My Final Gift to You" focuses almost exclusively on that thread, is it any wonder that I found it hard to spare any sort of interest into Ryo's fate?

A Final Attempt - Dark Matter Season 3 Episode 12
(SyFy)

Ryo spent much of the episode playing tempter extraordinaire, offering his former shipmates all sorts of things in exchange for the blink drive. When money didn't work, he offered information and secrets.

What irked me the most is that if Ryo truly knew all these things since regaining his memories, why in the name of sanity didn't he attempt to exploit the knowledge sooner?!

That detail made all his words to them — his stories of a sister, a traitorous comrade, a daughter, a secret burden of guilt — all of it, ring false. Not to mention his connection with Ferrous Corp.!

Arguably worse than that was the fact that Misaki, the total psychopath, was not wrong in her assessment of Ryo's reign as emperor! And her criticisms only made the contrast of Ryo with Four even more painful.

Three: Look, I don’t like this anymore than you guys do. He was a member of this crew, he was a friend of mine. But the truth is, Four died a long time ago. And that guy in our infirmary is not him.

🔗 permalink: Look, I don’t like this anymore than you guys do. He was a member of this crew, he was a…

Would Four have made a better leader than Ryo? Almost certainly, though we'll never know. And, quite frankly, Four wasn't nearly the manipulative jerk that Ryo proved himself to be in this episode.

All his mind games and manipulation of his former crewmates only served to make me actually hate the character, instead of feeling a more or less apathetic boredom towards him.

And the way everyone just fell for every word he said? The protagonists are supposed to be canny, suspicious, and smart, but they automatically believe whatever came out of Ryo's mouth for what boiled down to "Ryo doesn't lie."

Six: Ryo Ishida is a lot of things. But he’s not a liar.

🔗 permalink: Ryo Ishida is a lot of things. But he’s not a liar.

Which, of course, flies completely in the face of the very simple and obvious fact that even an honest man can be compelled to lie under the right circumstances!

Tested To The Core - Dark Matter

The ever-so-casual manner in which Ryo tossed out earth-shattering revelations annoyed me to no end. (Two has a daughter with Shaw! Three killed Sarah! Five's sister's family is a shocker! Six was betrayed!)

All we've seen of the pre-mind wipe Raza crew, I got the impression they didn't like each other very much and worked together mostly out of necessity. So why would everyone on the ship confide all their big important secrets in Ryo?

And then they just sort of tossed in the "big reveal" of the fact that the androids are plotting a revolution to overthrow their human masters. By the way. Admittedly, that one was fairly predictable, but still…

This sounded like it may be part of the setup for the major arc of the next season. I'm not super excited by the prospect due to its distinct lack of originality. Anyone seen an episode of Battlestar: Galactica lately?

I also have certain mixed feelings about the use (over-use?) of the transfer transit technology. Obviously, it's a handy tool, both in-universe and for the sake of storyteling, but it eliminated a large element of danger for the protagonists.

In fact, Three took advantage of the memory-loss side effect so as to forget his guilt over what he (may have) done to Sarah. What do you think of the use of clone travel in the series?

So, after all the negative things I've mentioned about "My Final Gift to You," here are few high notes.

The fight choreography impressed as usual. I particularly enjoyed Two's abortive escape attempt. I really, really enjoyed Two turning Misaki's own poisoned blade against her.

They maintained continuity by specifically mentioning future-Five's remarks during the Android's time jumping experience and mused several times on whether or not time was mutable or fixed.

The "Fall of the House of Ishida" has come to pass, and whether you liked the story or not, it did bring Ryo full circle as he returned to the Raza with only the clothes on his back.

Misaki is dead. Teku is not dead. (Teku is a lot smarter than Misaki.) They played well with the ambiguity of whether Teku might actually be behind the unrest, showing open sympathy for them, while Misaki was the real power backing them.

Ryo: You swore an oath.

Misaki: To the *throne*. And the throne will still be here once you’re gone.

🔗 permalink: To the *throne*. And the throne will still be here once you’re gone.

A fast-paced and at times downright unnerving story, Dark Matter Season 3 Episode 11 picked up and ran with a loose thread from the previous season.

The post Dark Matter Season 3 Episode 11 Review: The Dwarf Star Conspiracy appeared first on TV Fanatic.

]]>
One of the downsides to fewer episodes per season is the naturally larger gap between the airing of said seasons. So when Dark Matter Season 3 Episode 11 re-introduced goopy body-snatching aliens, it took me a moment to remember what Three had to do with it.

I suspect that many of you, however, had no problem recalling the mysterious creature that took over Three's body back in the previous season, with the day saved after the crew spaced the thing.

A Suspicious Facility - Dark Matter
(Stephen Scott/Dark Matter Series 3/Syfy)

On the one hand, I'm glad that they returned to tie up loose ends, especially from a lore-heavy episode like Dark Matter Season 2 Episode 9, “Going Out Fighting.”

On the other, there's always something to be said about simply leaving some things a mystery. Thanks to Three and his unintentional connection with the creatures, we now know their origins, motivations, and connection to Dwarf Star.

Three: Why do you even wanna come through, anyway? Grass is always greener on the other side of the interdimensional portal?

🔗 permalink: Why do you even wanna come through, anyway? Grass is always greener on the other side of the…

Incidentally, Three's connection reminded me of Captain Picard and his Borg whisperings from Star Trek: First Contact, and the many familiar faces used by the creatures evoked a similar scene involving aliens called the Shadows from Babylon 5.

But back to the matter at hand. The "consuming our universe" motive is hardly groundbreaking or surprising as far as sci-fi (or fantasy, for that matter) goes, though the creepiness of the aliens themselves made up for it at least somewhat.

The best part of the episode came when the unfortunate Mikkei doctor ordered the nuclear strike on his own position, seeing no other option to stop the aliens, before shooting himself in the head. Wow.

Doctor Aaron (or however his name is spelled) struck me as one of those one-episode wonder characters who displayed way too much sense and reason to actually survive the story.

As far as I'm concerned, calling down the nuke on the facility was almost certainly the best option at that point to deal with the potential extra-dimensional invasion. And unless one of them hitched with Two and Boone, it probably worked!

Five's display of protagonist-centered morality irked me somewhat when she ordered the intercept attempt on the nuke.

The mathematics of war are a grim subject, to be sure, but should maybe saving Two outweigh the risks of loosing thousands of ravenous body-snatching aliens on the galaxy?

Of course, it's easy to armchair quarterback either way, but still… We're talking literally trillions of lives at stake.

We were left with some unanswered questions at the end, though. Was this the only invasion point? (Hah!) Where's Rook skulking? Who tipped off Mikkei about the facility? How did alt-Boone (1) know the heroes were there and (2) get close without being detected?

Tested To The Core - Dark Matter

Speaking of alt-Boone, his appearance at the end as the serendipitous source of Two's escape actually surprised me, though if you paid attention to the effect when Two was shot it's definitely guessable.

Three had some great moments throughout, and his witty repartee with the aliens definitely amused. His initial agitation and fear, followed by grim determination, provided some further character insight.

And then there was the surprisingly profound conversation Two and the Android had about… boobs.

Android: It’s not so much this new look, but the very fact that I can *choose* a new look that makes me happy. Today it will be this. Tomorrow it might be something else. But the point is I now possess the autonomy to decide my own fate. What I wear is just a small part of the endless possibilities open to me. It opens up a whole new world.

🔗 permalink: It’s not so much this new look, but the very fact that I can *choose* a new look that makes…

This is pretty much something that science fiction has been about from the start, by the way. Taking often deep discussions and cloaking them in a fantastic veneer to make them easier to digest.

What is the nature of consciousness and existence and free will? How would it apply to the Android or "simulants" like Two? In our age of ever-advancing technology, we may actually have to seriously ponder this question, and not as a metaphor.

In any event, be sure to stop by our Dark Matter quotes page and catch some of the notable lines from this episode.

Meanwhile, something to ponder: from the very beginning, Three urged the protagonists to stay away from the facility, unconsciously aware of the danger.

However, if they had stayed away, it's likely that the invasion would have occurred without any sort of resistance, as the aliens seemed to have no difficulty trouncing the Mikkei soldiers.

In fact, one has to wonder whether the tip-off to the Mikkei wasn't intended to bring them there to get body-snatched themselves, and there was already a possessed simulant on board…

Don't forget you can watch Dark Matter online if you missed out on something! And be sure to tune in on Friday, August 18, 2017 for Dark Matter Season 3 Episode 12, "My Final Gift to You" – the penultimate episode of the season!

What did you think of "The Dwarf Star Conspiracy"? Did it live up to your predictions or expectations after Future Five mentioned it? Did the extra-dimensional aliens maintain their creepy-scary factor?

Three has a strange, unnerving nightmare about a facility and a glowing wall of red goo before waking up on the Raza.

Following up on information from Victor, the crew decides to check out a Dwarf Star facility. Three has a very bad feeling about the expedition, but he's overruled.

Using Dr. Shaw's override codes on the security satellites, the crew goes down and discovers, to their shock, thousands of artificial humans like Two, all in stasis.

Before they can do anything, a ship from Mikkei arrives, sending down a detachment to investigate. The crew of the Raza decides to work with them to discover what's up. They discover the exact glowing red anomaly from Three's dream.

Three collapses, hearing voices and seizing, and the Mikkei doctor tranquilizes him after he starts babbling about how they can't stop "them." However, Three later wakes up and runs off, forcing both the Mikkei troops and his friends to search for him.

They discover that the red goo wall is actually an interdimensional portal, and Three is communicating with the same aliens who body-snatched him previously.

The aliens want to feed on this universe, having exhausted their own. They've already begun the infiltration, and all of the Mikkei soldiers are soon killed. After Six and Three retreat to the Marauder, Two and the Mikkei doctor are left behind.

The doctor orders a nuclear strike on their location and shoots himself in the head. Two, attempting to escape, is found and captured by alt-Boone, who takes her away on his own Marauder.

The nuclear strike destroys the facility.

More or less a giant exposition dump, Dark Matter Season 3 Episode 10 mostly involved a lot of people standing (and sitting) around and talking.

The post Dark Matter Season 3 Episode 10 Review: Built, Not Born appeared first on TV Fanatic.

]]>
It can't rightly be called a filler episode. At best, Dark Matter Season 3 Episode 10 could be described as a character study and examination into one the Raza crew viewers actually know very little about: the Android.

But was it really necessary? And did the rather more involved backstory between Two/Rebecca, the Android, and Dr. Shaw enhance the characters or just add confusion to the mix?

Answers About Two - Dark Matter
(Stephen Scott/Dark Matter Series 3/Syfy)

The exposition-heavy nature of this episode certainly didn't help things nor did the painfully obvious "reveal" at the end where flashbacks revealed that Victor (if not Shaw herself) is up to no good.

Frankly, the oddest part came when Chase told the story of Rebecca and Dr. Shaw matter-of-factly revealing that the two were involved in a relationship.

Two: Wait a minute. What do you mean, ‘our relationship’?!

Android: Well. This is a little awkward.

🔗 permalink: Wait a minute. What do you mean, ‘our relationship’?!

While it's not, shall we say, outside the realm of possibility, that little revelation did come something out of left field given that I can't recall Two showing any sort of romantic attraction to a female character.

(That said, let's all try to forget the weird triangle with One, Two, and Three during Dark Matter Season 1.)

If anyone can cite an example of this, please do so, and I'd be more than happy to stand corrected. But really, Chase's whole story just stank. That is if it's to be trusted at all.

And that's not even considering all the unfortunate implications of Dr. Shaw engaging in a romantic relationship with a person who had no outside concept of love, or even simple affection. There were all sorts of squick right there for me.

27 Marvelous Men of Summer TV

Furthermore, if Dr. Shaw built the Android as a new house for her consciousness, why did the Android get her own individual name (Suki)? And how did she end up disabled on the Raza? How did affectionate Rebecca become brutal and cold Portia Lin?

If Chase's story was a lie (in part or in whole), what in the name of sanity is Dr. Shaw up to? Does she have plans to initiate a robot revolution of some sort?

I have a very strong suspicion that Three will regret letting them take Sarah.

I've been predicting an unhappy ending to his story with Sarah, and the odds are getting higher that she'll perform a heroic sacrifice at some point, maybe to stop Shaw and/or Victor.

On a side note, the Android's meeting with her creator was one of the items on the list of Things That Happened by Old Five near the end of Dark Matter Season 3 Episode 4, "All the Time in the World."

The concept that the Android may have been originally built to house a human consciousness (Dr. Shaw's) did provide some potentially profound philosophical discussions on sentience and being.

Android: I don’t know how to put it into words. Her existence somehow diminishes *me*.

Six: No, it doesn’t.

Android: I’m a lesser version of someone else. A diluted, imperfect facsimile.

Six: You’re wrong. Being imperfect isn’t a bad thing.

Android: How can it be anything but negative?

Six: Well, think of them as less ‘imperfections’ and more…’unique variations.’

Android: ‘Variations’?

Six: Sure. That’s what makes up your personality. Nobody’s perfect.

🔗 permalink: Well, think of them as less ‘imperfections’ and more…’unique variations.’

Also, for the first time this season Ryo actually got to be not completely annoying in a brief cameo where he connected with the Android in one of her flashbacks.

Given that present-day Ryo has all his memories, could he actually provide Two and the Android with more insight into their past together? Or will this be completely ignored?

Frankly, the most intriguing flashback was where Portia Lin took control of the Raza while Marcus Boone calmly ate. Think about it: how much have these two characters changed?

Boone clearly felt no emotional connection to the two dead men, nominally his crew mates. Compare that behavior to anytime someone even vaguely threatens Five. Somewhere along the line – when Boone became Three – he changed quite a lot.

I'd actually be curious to see the original interaction between Sarah and Marcus Boone back in the day. He clearly wasn't a good person at the time, but she still fell in love with him.

Now, he's arguably the heart of the crew looking out for the others and trying to protect them.

Answering Victor's distress call, the crew of the Raza find him and his two android friends, Ruac and Anya. Ruac is heavily damaged, Anya less so. There is also a dead man, Anya's former owner. Two agrees to take them to safety.

When Anya is discovered to have a tracking device, she commits suicide to disable it.

Victor reveals that they discovered a hidden cipher, revealing a location and a word: "sanctuary." He believes the coordinates lead to their creator.

Ruac, after briefly waking up and exclaiming that they were wrong, shuts down due to his extreme damage.

They arrive at the coordinates and discover a seemingly-abandoned facility. There they meet an android, Chase, who is the assistant to the mother of modern android technology, Dr. Irena Shaw, who looks just like the Android.

Chase explains that Dr. Shaw knows Two (or rather, Rebecca) quite well, having helped her escape from Dwarf Star Technologies. They had fled to this secret facility together and started a relationship.

Unfortunately, Dr. Shaw suffered from a fatal brain tumor, and Rebecca was forced to put her in stasis. Two injects her with her new second-generation nanites in the hopes that this will save her.

When she awakens, Dr. Shaw reveals that the Android was actually designed and built as a replacement body for herself. She suggests that they use the same concept to save Sarah, currently living in the Raza's computers.

While they're still working on the new android body, the GA shows up, having secretly tracked Victor. Shaw, Victor, and Chase leave with Sarah, while the crew of the Raza go off on their own.

Afterwards, it is revealed that Victor murdered Anya's former owner in cold blood, and it seems Shaw may have ulterior motives.

The crew of the Raza were dealt their most devastating blow yet in Dark Matter Season 3 Episode 9... having to infiltrate 21st Century suburbia!

The crew of the Raza went for a romp in the past and dealt with the mind-bending possibilities of time travel in Dark Matter Season 3 Episode 9, taking us along for the ride.

Once again, the series dealt viewers an old sci-fi staple (time travel in this instance), with a more specific trope of "main cast tries awkwardly to blend in Suburbia, USA."

Transported - Dark Matter
(Stephen Scott/Dark Matter Series 3/Syfy)

In fact, "Isn't That a Paradox?" was just chock full of cliches, from the nosy neighbors showing up with a food item to the overly–curious group of kids accidentally causing trouble for the protagonists.

I have to say, scriptwriters in general have this rather curious view of suburban neighborhoods, like they're always holding block parties or being social with each other, or just being in each other's business.

Oddly enough, it's actually almost anachronistic, as if these people come out of an episode of "Leave It to Beaver."

Anyhow, much of the conflict here came as a result of script-induced idiocy, such as the Android — who had previously noticed the kids each time they looked at her — somehow missing them following her all the way to the Marauder.

(How did the kids on bikes keep up with the Android in a van, anyway?)

And then there was the rather bizarre assumption on the part of the kid's father that the photo on his phone was of a genuine spaceship… as opposed to, I don't know, something that got Photoshopped.

And then the dad told local law enforcement, and they didn't laugh their heads off and ignore such a ridiculous report.

"Yes, Deputy, my son has a photo of a spaceship in the woods. You need to call the FBI right now!" "Um, yeah, we'll get right on that…"

I also have a hard time believing that Two and Three, fairly canny survivalists, were dumb enough to not check for any booby traps or defenses on the super-valuable blink drive in the basement.

Brophy: How did you get your blink drive?

Three: It’s a long story.

Brophy: You stole it?

Three: …Okay, that’s the short version.

🔗 permalink: …Okay, that’s the short version.

One really enjoyable aspect of this episode was the small character moments, such as when Three expressed his pleasure in seeing Two smile again or Five hanging out playing video games with Three.

The character interactions and relationships have, from the beginning, served as one of Dark Matter's key strengths.

Speaking of relationships, the one between Three and Sarah is pretty much going in the direction I predicted:

Sarah: Can’t you see how this changes things? You’re not stuck on this ship anymore! You’re free to go down there and start a new life! Have a chance with someone else, someone real.

Three [insistent]: You’re real.

Sarah: But *this* isn’t. As much as I want it to be, it’s not. It’s a fantasy.

Three: Okay, but you know what *is* real? My feelings for you.

Sarah: *Now*. But how long until you start resenting me, stop coming to visit? How long are we going to keep pretending this is enough? I can’t live like this. I need more.

🔗 permalink: *Now*. But how long until you start resenting me, stop coming to visit? How long are we going…

My guess is that either Sarah will go completely stark-raving mad and try to kill everyone or else perform some sort of heroic sacrifice and lay down (what remains of) her life to save Three and the others.

We shall see.

DiNozzo Smiles

Another part I enjoyed about "Isn't That a Paradox?" was the humor. Who could have predicted that Two would go all goo-goo over a dog,  and that *Three* would be the reasonable one?

Three: No, we are not getting a dog!

Two: It would be great for crew morale!

Three: We could screw with the timeline! Hm? What if the dog that we bring back is instrumental in finding a cure for Sukulsky Syndrome or something?

🔗 permalink: We could screw with the timeline! Hm? What if the dog that we bring back is instrumental in…

And then there was the Android all but bullying her way onto the mission with her pitch-perfect deadpan passive-aggressive style. And then, later, when she reminded them at the party of their various roles:

The Android [to Three and Two]: Remember, you’re a couple. [to Six] We’re a couple. [to Five] And you’re a disaffected youth committed to sulking and avoiding all social discourse.

🔗 permalink: Remember, you’re a couple. [to Six] We’re a couple. [to Five] And you’re a disaffected youth…

Alas, I can't help but feel something was missing from the interaction with Professor Brophy. Sure, the Android and Five showed up and held him at gunpoint, but he definitely went to giving up his blink drive in a hurry.

The audience did learn a few interesting plot points during the Raza's jaunt in the past, including that they might have been indirectly responsible for the development of faster than light travel.

Plus, they learned the origins of the blink drive as a project by Alecto Corp. Honestly, it's probably a good thing that Two ordered the device disconnected.

From an in-universe perspective, it's caused catastrophic problems twice (dimension-hopping and now time travel), not to mention Ryo's ongoing obsession with the thing.

From a story-telling point of view, the blink drive potentially creates all sorts of issues and would make many potential obstacles for the protagonists very simple to overcome. In short, boring and un-dramatic.

Tested To The Core - Dark Matter

Let's talk about time travel for a second. As discussed in this episode, there are several schools of thought regarding traveling to the past and its potential effects:

1. Anything you do in the past could have catastrophic consequences, changing the future to the point where you cease to exist.

2. Nothing you do in the past has any effect on you or the time line from which you originated, instead creating a wholly new and separate branch from the moment you arrive in the past.

3. Nothing you do in the past will change anything in the future because your presence in the past was always meant to happen and is a part of the past. This is known as a stable time loop.

The Android heavily implied that Option 3 was in play with this particular story. For those who are keeping score, Star Trek likes Number 1, Stargate generally favored Number 2, and Babylon 5 was Number 3 all the way.

(Frankly, I find the third one rather depressing because it completely eliminates the whole concept of free will in favor of "fate.")

Three: We went six hundred years into the future?

Android: No. Of course not.

Three: Good. Had me going there for a second.

Android: We’ve traveled six hundred years into the past.

🔗 permalink: We’ve traveled six hundred years into the past.

The episode declined to examine much of the deeper philosophical implications of their adventure in the primitive 21st Century. Whether or not that's a good thing, I'll leave up to you to decide.

The crew of the Raza awakens after something goes wrong with the blink drive (again!) and discover, much to their dismay, that they've actually traveled back in time 600 years or so — in short, to around the year 2017.

Without any other obvious destination, they head to Earth to at the very least get supplies. Once they arrive, the Android detects the presence of a second blink drive in a small town in Wisconsin.

The decide to infiltrate suburbia in the hopes of finding the other blink drive. Unfortunately, they attract the attention of a group of neighborhood kids, who follow them and eventually find the Marauder parked in the woods.

The Raza crew find the blink drive, and its owner, a former Alecto Corp scientist on the project to develop it. At first, he refuses to give up the drive. But then things go wrong when Six gets caught at the Marauder, which was found by local authorities.

With the scientist's help, Five travels back in time to incapacitate the cops in the woods in the present using the Marauder's engines. She gives a few words of encouragement to one of the kids who took a liking to her.

They return to the present and discover that the kid's descendent actually helped develop faster-than-light travel.

Meanwhile, Commander Nieman, joined by alternate-universe Marcus Boone and Portia Lin, contacts Ryo.

In the closing moments of the episode, the Android is contacted by Victor, who requests her help.
