Amani wants Damien to go to Kelly's funeral. Damien isn't too keen on the idea, and his reasoning is sound.

Everyone seems to know Damien is here. By "he," I assume they're all saying the antichrist. They have one of the 7 daggers of megito. "Strike where the heart should be," isn't exactly comforting. They use the "if you could have killed Hitler before he unleashed all the horrors on the world" crap, which I've decided I don't like.

Father drops dead in the confessional, clutching his glass prescription bottle.

Ann Rutledge is at Kelly's funeral where Damien gets sick and vomits.

Ann has also bought Damien's entire library of photos and oh by the way, his contract is over. Hmmm.

Damien tells a priest at Kelly's after party that God is a sadistic prick. Of course, it's after a discussion about what happened to Kelly, being a great, caring person being swallowed up by the street. God's plan?

A little girl with one eye sewn shut seems to be following Damien around, writing 666 in moist windows and playing in abandoned parking lots.

With her is a dude in a hoodie.

While Damien is tussling with Hoodie, a cabbie is driving by. He has a crucifix in his car, sees a rottweiler and swerves to crash into hoodie. Oh! Hoodie one of the 7 daggers. I didn't remember him being such a bum.

Amani and Simone find Kelly's notes on Damien. They thought, at first, she was working on a religious story. Nope!

The cop thinks it's pretty weird Damien wasn't hurt in not one, but two accidents. Up pops Ann Rutledge, council. Weird things just happen to Damien. Gotsta get him home!

Ann shares the true circumstances of Damien's birth with the boy.

Ann has one of the 7 daggers in her photography room full of disturbing "art."

Downstairs? All of Damien's stuff, including the bike he rode around in The Omen. This seems to clue Damien into who she is, but it doesn't clue me in to who she is at all. She says Welcome Home Damien as if it means something.

I've only seen Damien Season 1 Episode 1, but so far, so good. It's got my attention. There isn't any doubt who Damien is. He's the kid from The Omen. I not only recognize him from his previous journey, but want to know what's next. 

That link between the story that was and what will be makes it interesting. Mind you, I have no idea if the setting is supposed to be 2001, when Damien would have really been turning 30, or if we're just skipping around to present. I don't care. I'm still on board.

Bradley James makes Damien worth watching. The character is an enigma. He claims to have had a dark cloud around him forever, yet doesn't believe it could be related to God or the devil. By the same token, he doesn't appear to believe in either, but doesn't hesitate to go to church to lay some questions at Jesus' feet. Interesting.

When he cries out at the end of the premiere, it is painful. I don't hate the antichrist (as usual). What makes him tick? What do we find out straight away? Not too much.

He has close friends and fellow photojournalists, Amani and Kelly, who care for him deeply. Amani got him an extravagant gift for his birthday and Kelly traveled around the world to be with him after what went down with the old lady. 

He was kicked out of many schools. So he's troubled, but we don't know why as of yet. He's been on the radar of the Catholic church and there is a special knife in in their possession to kill him, but they think they're too late. 

Kelly's sister, Simone, didn't think much of him, but she didn't push him away after Kelly was killed. 

As Damien's memories began flooding back, he was shocked to recall his governess saying to him on this 5th birthday the same thing the old lady did to him on his 30th, "Damien, I love you. It's all for you!"

I thought for sure the lady was killed when she was standing before Damien, and he became baptized in her blood. Apparently not. (Or was she??) She sure left an impression. It took the entire episode for him to tie her into his whole life, but it was a cool reveal.

The way the show is tying in The Omen as memories Damien has from his past works really well for me. It was done the same way on Ash vs Evil Dead this past summer (another series that asked us to forget two other franchise films) and those walks down memory lane only make the present take more appealing.

When Damien met Ann (Barbara Hershey, who will play a larger role going forward), she told him:

Ann: The key is to always maintain a presence, without them knowing you’ve always been there the entire time, right over their shoulder the entire way.

That's essentially what the old lady had done, as well. She had been at every photographically worthy event in Damien's life. Not only would that make you feel violated, but you'd have to feel manipulated, too. Was someone trying to guide his life into a certain position?

If he could shake her, could he shake the darkness? I have no idea if he'll be thinking that, but I sure would. We think we know he's going to eventually embrace the darkness, because that's his destiny, but before he gets there, what will he do to try to thwart it?

If he struggled with the darkness and kept people at arm's length all of his life, then he wasn't ready to announce to the world he's the antichrist. I'm interested to see how he'll deal with those around him, who he'll let in and who he'll keep out.

He seems intelligent and almost too rational, though. Since he doesn't have a deep belief in God, it's not as if he'll lean on the good to right his path. He could be just as interested in hearing the pleas of both sides before he comes to any decision.

Wouldn't merely listening to the darkness be the devil's way in? That's what I always thought. 

At first it was Kelly who was leading Damien to answers he wasn't sure he wanted to know. With her death, finding the old lady in the photos and the deluge of memories, he's going to start seeking them for himself, and that will lead to the rising of the antichrist.

He'll be more eager to have answers than to protect himself against what knowing them might mean.

Now, Damien is all grown up, and he's wondering about the darkness that's followed him his entire life. He's going to have to make a decision about where he goes from here. Bradley James (Merlin, iZombie) is the titular character, not only an anti-hero, but the antichrist.

Last week, I had a chance to speak with James about the role, the resurgence of religiously themed programming and more. Carry on for the full interview, below!

Were you familiar with The Omen when you first considered the role of Damien?

I had certainly seen it when I was younger and wasn't able to understand what it was about. We have a very popular reference in England to Damien, because one of the most popular shows in English history is a show called Only Fools and Horses. It's about these two brothers who try to wheel and deal their way to make their fortune.

One of them had a son they named Damien. And every time the uncle sees Damien, the ominous kind of operatic score kicks in and the little baby looks directly at Rodney and it became this running gag of Damien Trotter who was this little hell child, but only Rodney, the uncle, could see. So, there's a very large awareness of Damien and The Omen.

Then we watched the film a year ago and I got a much better appreciation for it. It was on the other night, as well, and it's just such a good film. I love it! I can understand why it's got such a following.

How does it feel to be playing such an iconic role, picking it up 40 years later?

That sort of aspect of it isn't really addressed right away. I guess that comes into it when you see people's reactions to it later. As an actor, you getting a character on a page and you bring him to life. You're doing the same fundamentals as you would with any character, but it's fortunate enough to have such a following already.

There's nothing special you can do to make sure this works any more than any other character. You're doing the work to piece him together and to try to relate to the humanity within him. There is still that sort of straightforward working hard and making sure you get the fundamentals right.

You mention his mentality, and since his family's death, that's pretty much what he's been, is living a normal life. What's the mindset of the character going to be as he starts to remember his earlier life?

He is a normal guy in extraordinary circumstances, really. He has a darkness that seems to follow him around that doesn't seem to happen to everybody else. He's not really clear why that is. He's led as normal a life as he's been able to, but by being on the run from that darkness.

He gets to the stage where he can no longer outrun the darkness, it's sort of catching him up and that is where our journey starts. We see how he reacts to extraordinary circumstances as one of us.

There's nothing particularly exceptional about him as a human being, he is one of us, so we have that opportunity to put the audience in the thinkseat of what they would…thinkseat? [laughs] I think I just created that out of thin air…to put them in the position of thought, to try and think what they would do if they were in that position.

I've only seen the pilot, but I noticed that he does go to God as things begin to happen to ask for guidance. Will there be characters on both sides of the spectrum guiding him? For example, those who believe in God and those who are a bit more nefarious, which is how I imagine Barbara Hershey's character.

Well, you used a very apt word there, in the case of using the word spectrum. I think there will be people all the way through that spectrum, so I it won't be an all out, you know, one side or the other, good and bad, but would be various shades of gray, which is how I describe Damien.

I think that summarizes a lot of characters in the show. You would take Barbara's character, and perhaps say she's many more shades of gray darker than the other characters, but it's not always sort of a cut and dry black and white situation where each character falls.

I'm picturing Damien, as the series starts, to be at the very middle, because then it would be more interesting for viewers to watch struggle as he falls into that darkness. Kind of the ultimate tug of war. Is that correct?

Well, I think it's certainly in the right ballpark. We all have that within us, how honest we are about that is a different story. But we all have that good and evil within us. That expresses itself in our choices, and I think that tug of war that goes on through the show is in the choices that Damien makes, and sometimes he makes what people would construe as the wrong ones, and sometimes he makes decisions when he's backed into a corner and feels like he can't do anything else.

I think it's the combination of all those choices that builds people's perceptions of a man and is probably the case with life. As I suppose the pressure cooker builds with this ominous destiny, you know, those decisions just become harder and harder. And with that the threat of going further and further along that spectrum to the darker side of it.

And plus, he has that weird 666 on his head, so you start to think, I might as well just make the decisions anyway! It's my destiny!

There is that, yes. [laughs] There is that rather unfortunate moniker on the back of his head, which explains why he's always had long hair, or long enough, never had a buzz cut. He's not showing that off.

There seems to be a resurgence of religiously themed shows at the moment. Lucifer paved the way and is doing well, Fox will have the Exorcist and now Damien. What do you think is going on?

I think the general social consciousness has grown. We've learnt as a society that it's not as straightforward as being good and bad, and we look for that depth in characters now on television because we're aware of it in ourselves and we're aware that it's in others as well. You know, it's certain barriers that didn't get broken down in our understanding of people.

What that opens up is exploring characters that, in the past, people would have seen them as evil, nowadays they're much more open to the idea of that not being the case. It's not cut and dry like that. Now they get these stories of characters like Damien, like the Devil, and people are prepared to accept different angles about these people and accept that there are different sides to every story.

Obviously, you get the slightly more hardcore people who just won't accept it, but their is a blurring and we're learning more about ourselves and it's a continuous journey. We're becoming a more informed society and it allows us to not be ignorant to things being just black and white.

Did you ever imagine playing Lowell on iZombie would touch so many people?

Again, something that was I just read, and it looked like a lot fun. I kind of had an idea of what I wanted to do with it and was allowed to have a bit of a play, and once I got up there and met the cast, and they were such a fun cast both on and off the set. It was just such happy times in Vancouver, and along with that came the opportunity to play such an enjoyable character.

I think it's more credit to the show, because of what Rob Thomas has been doing, he's a storytelling star, which has really paid off with iZombie, and I was really fortunate to be a part of it and really fortunate to have free license to have fun with it. So very fun, very happy memories being a part of iZombie.

So, would you ever name one of your kids Damien after this experience?

Noooo! I think that would be quite narcissistic, actually, to name a child after one of my characters. I don't want to be playing too many iconic roles and crossing too many off the list, I'll have to make up names if I'm not careful. [laughs] But, no. I think Damien one to maybe avoid. I certainly don't say that for everybody, but for myself? No. I don't think I'll cross that line of narcissism.

Damien in the Christian Quarter of the Old City, Damascus, Syria. His friend gives him a camera for his birthday. He's turning 30. He's a photojournalist and takes a photo of a particular old woman who doesn't seem pleased about it. He gives her a wave and moves on.

An army truck moves in. He photographs what's happening around him and the soldiers try to take kick them out. He sees his friend Kelly nearby. They all talk. There is going to be a massacre. The relocation turns into a fight. Guns shooting, smoke bombs go off. The old lady holds his face in her hands, her eyes go white. "Damien, I love you. It's all for you." She is shot and goes down and they're separated. He has memories of his childhood, his nanny hanging herself saying the same thing. He freaks.

Damien tells his friend, Amani, what happened to his head, just before all photojournalists are kicked out of Damascus. 

Later, Damien calls Kelly to ask her to try to find the old lady. She heard the entire exchange and is only too happy to help.

While he's trying to find help elsewhere, he runs into Ann Rutledge, who saw him last at his father's funeral. She tells him it's a whole new world, the seals been broken, the trumpet blown. He'll start remembering more about his past. She runs down his school expulsions and wonders why they didn't see he was a boy so obviously gifted.

She's very coy. 

Damien sees a rottweiler. 

Kelly has news about what the lady said. The exact same words John the Baptist said on Jesus' 30th birthday. Kelly notes he was essentially baptized in the old lady's blood. Damien tells Kelly about the time his Governess killed herself at his 5th birthday. 

He has always felt a dark cloud hanging over him, and when the old lady grabbed him, it was like it was inside him, growing. Kelly's sister, Simone, comes in. She's not pleased to see Damien.

While Damien and Amani are looking for photos of the old lady, Kelly appears. Damien shuts down their conversation. 

Instead, Kelly and Damien go to see a man who was working a priest at the time the events went down. Professor Reneas. Damien wonders why his father was seeking out a biblical scholar, since he wasn't a god fearing man. He wanted information on the beast, who was to be worshipped like a king before his true nature would be revealed. He'd plunge it into its darkest days. The word antichrist was never used in Revelation, but they believe the beast and Revelation to be the same.

Damien says the number 666 means nothing to him, but you can tell he's unsettled. 

The professor begs him to accept Christ as his savior. He may not be fire and brimstone, but the devil does exist. He lurks in the dark corners of the heart.

There's that rottweiler again. At the professor's door. A whole bunch of them. They're hungry.

Just after Damien says he doesn't believe in God or the devil, Kelly gets a call that Reneas was killed. By an animal. Damien knows it's because of him. He wants her to go. Leave him alone. He sends her packing. In tears, she leaves.

Kelly's car is stuck. She cannot move. She begins to get sucked under the car. She's screaming and Damien gets there just in time to watch her and the car get sucked under the ground.

Simone needs to believe that death isn't the end, but Damien doesn't believe in anything. 

An old Cardinal and priest are talking. "He visited Igor Renaes last night." What did he say? "He's dead." He is to rise from the holy land, but it goes through Damascus. They uncover a knife. They waited too long.

When Damien goes into church, a heavy winds blows him back from the crucifix, all of the votive candles go dark. He takes out the rosary. What did he ever do to him? His mother, his father. How many more? Why her? Why?? Answer me. Answer me!! He touches the crucifix and he sees so much. It crumbles to pieces before him and memories flood back. Please daddy, no!

He runs out to see the old woman. Who is she?? She grabs his hair and pulls out a clump. Onlookers pull him away. Get away from her!

At home, he's looking, again, for proof of her in photos. Suddenly, she's everywhere, in every photo from every bit of his life. He looks at his head where she tore the hair out and sees 666. He throws up.
