The network made the decision to cut the series prior to the upfronts next week.

Though the series debuted to solid ratings, there just wasn't enough of an audience to secure a renewal. 

Other series canceled today by ABC include Resurrection, Forever and The Taste.

The answer seems fairly obvious, but when your boss is Trent Culpepper, the decision may be a little harder than you think. Cristela is faced with a difficult decision on Cristela Season 1 Episode 16, as she has to decide between attending Henry's Confirmation or helping Trent out of an uncomfortable situation. 

It was Henry's Confirmation this week and he asked Cristela to be his sponsor. It was a sweet moment for aunt and nephew and Cristela was genuinely excited about it, even though she wasn't exactly sure what she would be doing. 

Natalia had some great one liners once again and every little dig she took at Cristela for not exactly being the most religious person was funny. Although, Henry may get the line of the night, as he was trying on his Confirmation suit.

While Cristela was excited about the Confirmation, she was also in charge of planning the walk-a-thon at work. When she found out the Confirmation and the walk-a-thon would be on the same day, she figured she would find a way to make it to both. Unfortunately, that was looking nearly impossible once Trent found himself in hot water. 

Trent makes off-color jokes all the time, but he happened to make one to Cristela that was inadvertently caught on tape by Maddie. This lead to Trent being called a racist and him begging Cristela to help him do damage control at a press conference. 

Now is it really Cristela's problem that you're being labeled a racist, Trent? No. So, I didn't like how rude he was being about her choosing a big family event over Trent's problem. Confirmation is a big deal and it would have been nice if Trent was a bit more understanding, but then again, I guess that wouldn't exactly be keeping with his character.

It was nice that Trent and Maddie got a brief chance to really act like father and daughter, with Maddie calling him out for being an absentee father. I've never been the biggest Trent fan, but he does have his moments. And, I think this may have been one of the first times I actually felt the connection between the two of them. 

In the end, Cristela ditched the walk-a-thon and meet the family at the church and in a very sweet moment, Henry revealed his Confirmation name was going to be Chris. 

Cristela: You picked a name after me? Even though I almost didn’t make it here?

Henry: Yeah, because you always look out for me. And I know it sounds corny, but I feel safe when you’re around. It’s part of the speech I’m gonna give.

Awe! I was right there with the audience! You just can't help but love this family.

Trent gets caught up in a PR nightmare when Maddie uploads a video that shows Trent in the background making an off-color joke to Cristela. Trent asks Cristela to accompany him to a press conference before the walk-a-thon, to prove he is not a racist. 

Cristela chooses to attend the press conference and when she tells her family, they seem okay with her decision. They explain that they're used to her not being around as much due to her work schedule. 

Cristela is unhappy her family sees her that way and she talks to Maddie about it, causing Maddie to realize how much her father wasn't around as much when she was younger due to his job. 

At the last minute, Cristela changes her mind and ditches the event for Henry's Confirmation and makes it just in time. She discovers that Henry has chosen Chris as his confirmation name, an obvious ode to her.

Meanwhile, Maddie helps Trent at the press conference and the two begin to mend their differences.

When Izzie has the opportunity to join the prestigious program on Cristela Season 1 Episode 15, Cristela does all she can do to make sure Izzie gets in. But is she putting a little too much pressure on the youngster?

Every school has a program for the students who are a bit more advanced than their peers and Cristela is definitely the kind of person I could see desperately wanting to be a part of that group. Unfortunately, she didn't get in and she hasn't forgotten it. 

Cristela: Izzie, I didn’t practice enough and I didn’t get in. I mean, no pressure, but it ruined my life.

Izzie never seemed overly enthusiastic about the whole process, so I wasn't terribly surprised when everyone found out she didn't get in. However, it was surprising to hear she didn't get in to spare Henry's feelings. 

It was a very sweet gesture on Izzie's part and no one seemed too upset about it, except for Cristela. She made a strong case for why it was wrong for Izzie to not give it her all and I was happy to see her insist that Izzie not give up. 

Her dynamic with the soccer coach was cute and I liked that they worked together to come up with a plan that would allow Izzie to retake the test. And while Cristela was happy about this, Natalia was none to pleased. 

When Natalia admitted she'd ripped up Cristela's acceptance letter to the gifted and talented program oh so many years ago, I was initially shocked but then I realized that this falls perfectly in line with what we know about Natalia. 

As a single mother, she fought to give her children a better life. She knew that they would be seen as different because they didn't have the same luxuries as their peers, so she didn't want them to stand out anymore than they needed too. Being part of the "gifted" group would have made Cristela even more different and Natalia wanted to shield her from that ridicule. 

Cristela was upset, as she had every right to be, but a little chat with Josh got her to see her mother was just doing her best back then. 

Josh [to Cristela]: Let’s put it in perspective. I know you had a hard road to get here but I bet it wasn’t as hard as your mom’s.

Love these cute little moments on this show! Natalia didn't fully apologize for her actions, but there's a better understanding between mother and daughter now that can only strengthen their relationship even more. 

The office plot had to do with Maddie getting a job in the mailroom and it couldn't have taken up more than four minutes of the show time total. Maddie was a terrible mailroom attendant, until Josh convinced her to use all the energy she puts into organizing her wardrobe, into organizing the mail. 

She still failed, but it was funny to watch!

Cristela Season 1 Episode 14 found Cristela helping not one, but two married couples who'd lost their way. With Roseanne back as Trent's estranged wife, the two looked to end their marriage once and for all, but were they throwing in the towel too soon?

Cristela sure thought so! When Trent tasked her with getting Veronica to sign a pre-nup, I was just as confused as she was. Who gets someone to sign a pre-nup right before they're about to get divorced? And who would actually sign that?

Veronica is a smart lady and she caught on to Trent's plan rather quickly. But when she talked to Cristela, it was pretty clear that her feelings for Trent weren't exactly gone. 

Cristela: I am saving your marriage because I believe in til death do us part.

Veronica: Well I could kill him if that’d make it easier for you.

When Cristela has an idea, she jumps on it and that's a major part of her charm. She saw Veronica clinging on to that small chance that maybe her and Trent were meant to be and that was enough for Cristela to want to bring them back together. 

I initially thought Trent was going to be completely against it, but it turns out he holds a very special place in his heart for Veronica. Watching Cristela mediate a talk between the two of them was great and it was nice to hear them both open up a little. They're always spewing venom at one another and it reminded me of what kids used to say when I was little; the meaner he is to you, the more he likes you. 

This may not be 100% accurate in this case, but there is a lot of love between the two of them, although a traditional marriage may not be in the cards for them. Instead, they're going to continue spending their time apart and come together for the occasional booty call.

Leave it to Maddie to drop this wise piece of knowledge on Cristela.

Maddie: Cristela, a good marriage is what’s best for the people in it, ya know? If being together means always being apart, well then sometimes it’s just nice knowing that there’s someone out there that’s connected to you. That you’re not alone.

Elsewhere, Daniela found out that a very important part of her history with Felix was built on a lie. I really don't fault Felix for not divulging that he was the dumpee the night he met Daniela and not the dumper. At the end of the day, they met, fell in love and have created a really beautiful life for themselves. 

So Felix didn't exactly pick her over someone else in the way she thought. He did pick her in the way that truly does matter and I'm in agreement with Cristela…

Felix: Cristela, what are you doing?

Cristela: Nothing. You know you’ve ruined marriage for me, because I’m not willing to settle for anything less than what you guys have.

When the test results come in, Cristela is disheartened to learn that Izzie did not pass. But Izzie shocks everyone by admitting she failed on purpose because she overheard her parents saying they were afraid Henry would feel bad if she got in since he had previously failed to do so. 

Cristela is very upset that Izzie didn't give her all and she goes to the advisor of the program and asks if Izzie can re-take the test. After coming up with a plan, Cristela tells everyone the good news but Natalia is not pleased. She believes Izzie does not belong in the group, just like Cristela didn't belong back then. She also admits to tearing up Cristela's acceptance letter the group. 

Cristela and Natalia argue but later Natalia comes around and even helps Izzie study for her makeup test. 

Maddie gets into a fender bender and she asks Trent for help, but he refuses. Instead, he tells her to get a job in the mail room. She doesn't make a good mail room attendant, until Josh tells her to organize the mail like she organizes her wardrobe.

When Cristela goes to Trent, he confirms that he would like to stay married as well. Cristela brings the two of them together and although they are hostile at first, they are both able to say nice things about one another. In the end they agree to stay married, but they will continue living apart and come together for booty calls. 

On date night, Daniela asks Felix to go to the bowling alley where they first met. Felix is hesitant, as the girl he dumped for Daniela still works there, but Daniela insists they go. At the bowling alley, Daniela makes Felix apologize to his ex, but she reveals that she was the one who dumped Felix.

Daniela is devastated, now believing that Felix settled for her. With Cristela's help, Daniela is able to forgive Felix and he buys them passes to go dancing.
