BBC has pulled the plug on Copper after two seasons.

The period drama has been a modest success for the network, but has failed to generate the sort of enormous buzz of Orphan Black, another BBC original series.

Sad BBC America General Manager Perry Simon in a statement:

Copper has been a fascinating and exciting experience for everyone involved. The opportunity to work with Tom Fontana, Barry Levinson, Will Rokos, Thomas Kelly and the extraordinary cast and crew on this journey is one that we are extremely proud of. Their vision to retell the immigrant experience through the melting pot of New York City was an original and fresh idea that melded well with the essence of BBC America’s programming. After 23 episodes, with Lincoln dead and the nation starting to heal, it seems a fitting moment to conclude this American story.”

Copper starred Tom Weston-Jones in the lead role.

Copper kicks off its second season run on Sunday, June 23.

And coming off a critically-acclaimed opening run of episodes, the BBC America original will be beefing up its cast impressively this summer:

Billy Baldwin is on board for the final pair of episodes as a Tammany Hall fixer, while Donal Logue (Terriers, Sons of Anarchy) will make even more of an impact as Brendan Donovan, a general just back from the Civil War who exerts major power in Five Points.

That character is prominently featured in the following promo:

Baldwin will portray a member of the Tammany Hall political machine named William “Wild Bill” Eustace.

In a statement released this morning, BBC America announced that production is underway on Cooper Season 2 – and that Donal Logue has joined the cast of this well-reviewed 1865-based drama.

A TV Fanatic favorite for his roles on Terriers and Sons of Anarchy, the actor will portray Brendan Donovan, a General just back from the Civil War battlefields and stationed in Five Points.

Look for the character to assert himself as one of the most powerful men in New York’s political machine.

Copper stars Tom Weston-Jones as Detective Kevin Corcoran, an Irish-American cop who is after justice in mid-19th century Big Apple.

“Season two is driven by flawed and haunted characters living in explosive times,” says creator Tom Fontana. “Each of them is looking for renewal in the wake of last season’s revelations and violent upheaval. The ongoing storylines follow Detective Corcoran and company on their paths to redemption or ruin.”

Said Perry Simon, General Manager, Channels, BBC Worldwide America, in making the announcement:

Copper has proven to be a perfect fit for the channel. Our viewers have made it our highest-rated series premiere ever and highest-rated drama series ever. Production led by Tom Fontana, Will Rokos, Barry Levinson and Christina Wayne, along with the cast from both sides of the pond, truly captured the boiling pot that was New York City in 1864. We can’t wait to get started on the second season.”

It will be comprised of 13 episodes and debut in the spring of next year.

The Copper Season 1 finale, meanwhile, airs Sunday night.

Better Times are Coming” could be considered part two of “The Hudson River School.”

All the plots pick up where they left off: Morehouse is still infiltrating (or collaborating with) the Southern rebels, Corcoran and Elizabeth are still at odds, the mystery surrounding Mary Lockwood and Maguire deepens and Annie is still unnecessarily disturbing.

Better Times are Coming Scene
(BBC)

What really stood out to me this week was Ryan and Weston-Jones chemistry. Maguire and Corcoran are troubled men and this, among other things, is the foundation of their bond. They look out for each other, especially when it comes to each other’s dark side.

At least that’s what I thought. Then Corky discovered “Mrs. Maguire” – Corky’s wife! – in an asylum for the insane. Maybe Maguire was trying to save Corky from the pain of seeing his wife like that, but I don’t know if I could trust him again.

But Maguire really isn’t looking so trustworthy lately, is he? Hiding Corky’s wife and possibly killing Mary Lockwood? Combined with what Eva said about Molly being afraid of Maguire, he’s turning out to very different than what I first thought.

And then there’s Annie. I know I’ve gone back and forth on her, but I think she’s the most inconsistent character on the show. I want to like her. I want the writers to turn her into a compelling and realistically troubled child, and you can see how they tug at her as they try to mine more depth. Putting on Corcoran’s wife’s clothes was particularly creepy, but it had more weight than her flippant sexual remarks. I put Annie’s most disturbing comment from this week on the Copper quotes page.

With Lincoln reelected, more Greek Fire possibly on the way and the three Booth brothers making an appearance, Copper is going to tangle itself even deeper in the historical events of the time, and that’s something I’m looking forward to. They way the show incorporates historical details, even if it’s just a small mention of “Boss Tweed” like in this week’s episode, is probably my favorite thing about the show.

What’s your favorite thing about Copper?

On Election Day in New York City, another killing hits close to home for the detectives of the Sixth Precinct on this episode of Copper. They discover Mary Lockwood’s body in Central Park. Maguire seems convinced that McLean did it, and in a chase guns the man down before they can interrogate him. Forensic evidence makes Corcoran suspicious of Maguire and he has him tailed.

Corcoran’s investigation of Maguire leads him to an insane asylum where he’s introduced to “Mrs. Maguire”. However, it’s actually Corcoran’s wife and Maguire has known she’s been there all along.

Morehouse is still involved with the Southern rebels, but foils their plan to blow up NYC after Lincoln wins the election.

On Copper: Corcoran catches Elizabeth in her lie about Annie and Morehouse stumbles on an interesting business proposition that has nothing less than the fate of New York City at stake.

This week on Copper, “The Hudson River School” takes on turncoats and petticoats; rebel spies and matters concerning the women of Five Points.

Partying on Copper
(BBC)

Morehouse makes himself useful for the first time in a long time by sniffing out the Confederate spies posing as Canadian businessmen. It’s the kind of task that Morehouse is well-suited for – it involves drinking, frequenting Eva’s establishment and idle but revealing small talk. But Morehouse, as usual, is tempted by the dark side.

Will he help these men if it’s to his advantage? We’ll have to stay tuned to find out.

Meanwhile, Elizabeth and Corky bask in their new found relationship. I’m honestly not a huge fan of them getting together so soon. I wanted more time for their sexual tension to build. But maybe I’ll get my wish. Their relationship quickly finds itself on the rocks when Corky discovers where Elizabeth really sent Annie. Again, Morehouse is waiting in the shadows to take advantage of a wounded Elizabeth.

I actually like that Elizabeth made the mistake of sending Annie with her Reilly. It makes her seriously flawed – the high-minded noblewoman who took in a troubled child more for social martyrdom than the good of the child. She couldn’t really care for Annie or she wouldn’t have given her up so easily. Of course, she gets points for trying to get Annie back, but she’s still not the goody two-shoes she seems to be.

I think Annie has also improved. Over the past two Copper episodes she’s become much more realistic. At least this time she actually had a reaction when she killed a man. Still, it seems the show is determined to make her creepy. Part of thinks the scene where she watches Eva and Corky have sex is an interesting way to depict her infatuation with Corcoran, but the other part of me thinks it’s unnecessary.

Overall, it was a fine episode that feels like it’s building to something bigger. Still, there are two really minor loose ends that I can’t let go of from tonight’s episode:

  1. The title: is it just because Corky chose not to slash the Hudson River School painting?
  2. Corky doing sit ups. Did sit ups exist in the 19th century?
