Code Black may not be dead yet.

CBS has confirmed it might bring the series back down the line after the response from fans to it being canceled after three seasons.

“It’s doing incredibly well, it’s a well-done show. We’d like to figure out a way to maybe make it work,” Kelly Kahl said on Sunday at the Television Critics Association summer press tour. “We’re going to take a look.”

The show's cancellation was a surprising one. The series was pushed from the main season to the summer schedule, and while the numbers went down considerably, they were still decent for the time of year it was airing.

Code Black Season 3 averaged 5.7 million viewers and a 0.7 rating among adults 18-49. However, the numbers swelled to 8.4 million viewers and a 1.2 rating.

The positive for the series is that it regularly topped the ratings on Wednesday night, proving the show had a devoted audience.

Considerations - Code Black Season 3 Episode 5

Code Black focused on the Emergency Room at the fictional Angels Memorial, and how the workers of that part of the hospital deal with life or death situations while being understaffed.

It starred Marcia Gay Harden, Boris Kodjoe, William Allen Young, Harry Ford, Benjamin Hollingsworth and Noah Gray-Cabey.

Since the show's cancellation in May, Kodjoe has booked a recurring role on ABC firefighter drama, Station 19, so there's a chance that if the show was to return, there would be some cast changes.

However, the series has changed much of the cast every year since it debuted, so it would not be too much different for fans.

Station 19 is adding a Code Black favorite to its ranks for Season 2!

The Grey's Anatomy spinoff has cast Boris Kodjoe as a recurring player, and his first appearance is slated to air this fall on ABC.

As is always the case with Shondaland casting news, very few details have been revealed about his role.

What we do know is that he will be playing a veteran firefighter with a past that's, well, mysterious. You know, the way most backstories are on soapy dramas.

The Station 19 cast already includes Jaina Lee Ortiz, Jason George, Miguel Sandoval, Grey Damon, Jay Hayden, Alberto Frezza, Danielle Savre, Okieriete Onaodowan and Barrett Doss.

Station 19 Season 1 launched in March as the second spinoff of Grey's Anatomy. It was a decent performer for ABC, with the premiere season pulling in an average of 5.3 million viewers and a 1.1 rating in the demo.

It held enough viewers from its parent series to be deemed a success. Thus, a second season was formally ordered.

In addition, the series helps keep the TGIT brand alive because Shondaland has officially left ABC for Netflix.

The other Shondaland drama on ABC is the low-rated For The People, and that show is expected to return to the air when How to Get Away with Murder wraps its 15-episode fifth season in early 2019.

Boris most recently starred on CBS drama Code Black, which ended its three-year run just last night after the network opted against ordering an additional season.

Code Black Season 3 took a hit in the ratings, averaging 5.7 million viewers and a 0.7 rating among adults 18-49 in love + same day metrics.

While the demo tally may seem soft, the erosion could be attributed to the show spending almost a year off the air before being shunned to the lower-viewed summer schedule.

The series is going out with a bang on Code Black Season 3 Episode 13. Plane crashes, teen overdoses, heartfelt confessions...how did they wrap it all up?!

It's not an easy thing to write a season finale that can double as an unplanned ending to a show.

Not only do all the storylines have to be wrapped up, but the audience needs to get some emotional closure as well. Code Black Season 3 Episode 13 pulled it off.

The Future - Code Black
(CBS/Ron P. Jaffe)

As much as I would love for the show to get picked up by Hulu or Netflix or any other network, I won't be mad if the story gets left where it is. Mario's promotion to attending and Leanne's newly formed family are the perfect bookends to Code Black Season 1 Episode 1.

While the finale wasn't perfect (so few are), it captured the pathos of the series nigh on perfectly. There were plenty of emotional confessions, words of wisdom at surprising moments, and, of course, a Five For Fighting song.

The overall feeling of "The Business of Saving Lives" is what makes it a success. The two best examples of this are the moments shared between Will and Angus and the courthouse scene.

It's been hard to watch Angus' descent into douchery this season, but the way that he stood up for himself with Will made it clear that was a necessary decline so that he could rise victorious, bursting with confidence but also with respect for his position.

Collapse - Code Black Season 3 Episode 13
(CBS)

Angus might not have wrapped up his residency like his bestie Mario, but he is now, without a doubt, a surgeon.

And of course, Will respects him and considers him a friend. How could he not? Angus, even while he's been lost in the dark forest of jackassery, is compassionate and sweet and hopeful. He's easily the most lovable character at Angels.

Will: I’ve learned more from you than you realize.

Angus: You have?

Will: Other than my daughter, you are the most compassionate person I know. I’m proud to call you my student. And my friend.

🔗 permalink: Other than my daughter, you are the most compassionate person I know. I’m proud to call you…

Leanne's impassioned speech to the judge about Ariel being her family was clearly supposed to be the emotional climax, but Jesse and the village showing up was far more tear worthy.

The monologue was important not just because it helped cement Ariel and Leanne as a family but because it so perfectly distilled Leanne's journey over three seasons.

She went from merely surviving the loss of her family to building a new one. Ariel was a major part of that, obviously, but it was also about letting in the rest of the crew from Angel's.

Takes A Village - Code Black Season 3 Episode 13
(CBS)

As flawless as the emotional tenor of the finale was, there were problems.

Like Ethan's ghost brother haunting him about…what exactly? The sudden breakdown of Dr. GI Joe was confusing for a few reasons, and it's hard to say what it achieved exactly.

Ethan had clearly been repressing his feelings for Rox. Was Ghost Robert really necessary to get him to confess his love? Shouldn't your (multiple) near-death experiences be enough impetus?

For that matter, did he ever actually declare his love? Asking somebody to save you isn't the healthiest start to a relationship. Especially when you've just received professional advice that the only person who can fix your mental health issues is you.

Taxi Service - Code Black Season 3 Episode 13
(CBS)

Rox's support would be important, but it's not fair to lay saving him completely at her feet. What is she getting out of that relationship?

These are the kind of questions I don't want to be asking during a finale. Get the couple together, by all means, but maybe in a way that doesn't have us suddenly questioning if we really want it to happen.

Asking For Help - Code Black Season 3 Episode 13
(CBS)

Thank god for Mario and Noa and their possibly-too-healthy relationship. Having a partner whose top priority is what's best for you should be everybody's ideal … and what we should all strive to be.

They helped each other grow, respected each other's professional goals, and were willing to let the other go. #BAEGoals.

Noa: I don’t know if I wanna go anymore. The recruiter swears they wanted me for me, but now the whole thing just feels…tainted.

🔗 permalink: I don’t know if I wanna go anymore. The recruiter swears they wanted me for me, but now the…

Noa's #MeToo story was the plot that made me wish for a Code Black Season 4 more than any other. How is the case against Mr. Avila going to play out? Are there more women? Will Noa face retribution in the medical community?

The story also managed to do the impossible and rehabilitate Diego. He listened to the victim and believed the women and suddenly he doesn't completely suck. Just in time for things to end.

Ariel shows up at Angel's after calling the EMTs when her friend Joy ODs. Because she stayed to take care of her friend, she ends up getting arrested for breaking and entering. Leanne is just relieved to know that she's safe, even though Ariel keeps insisting that she's not really back. Leanne finally agrees to let the cops take Ariel because the building has to be evacuated. At the adoption hearing, the whole team shows up to support Leanne. The judge is not disposed to grant her custody, but Leanne makes an impassioned speech. The judge asks Ariel what she wants, and the girl, moved by Leanne's words, asks to go home with her mom.

Ethan is released from his psych hold but is still hallucinating his dead brother. He's surprised that Martin has come to pick him up, but his father apologizes for their earlier fight and reassures Ethan that he'll always be there for him. Ethan insists on heading to Angels to see Rox. He gets sidelined in the ER with Noa's case but heads up to find Rox after the plane hits the building. His vision of his brother harasses him the entire way. He finally reaches Rox and helps her treat her physical therapist, who has been injured. The three of them head to the roof to be evacuated. Later, he struggles to express his feelings to Rox but ultimately chases down the car as she's about to leave. He is finally able to admit that he needs her.

Mario is struggling with the breakup, but Noa is still determined to pursue her dream of a prestigious OB residency. She heads to dinner with Mr. Avila, thinking that it's another step in the recruitment process and that Diego and a representative from the Philly hospital will be joining them. She's uncomfortable when he mentions that both had to "cancel" and starts to feel woozy. Mr. Avila tries to take her up to his suite, telling a waiter that she's had too much to drink, but she makes a break for it. Unfortunately, she gets into her car and ends up in an accident. Mario is frantic when she's brought in, and outraged when he finds out what happened. Noa ultimately goes to HR about the incident and is surprised when Diego volunteers to accompany her to the police precinct to file charges. She is now hesitant to pursue the program in Philadelphia, but Mario encourages her since it is what's best for her career, but also reassures her that he loves her and that they'll find a way to make the relationship work.

Angus is booted back to the ER after his stunt coercing consent from a patient. He decides to fight for his residency and goes to make his case to Will. He manages to get back on surgical rotation and ends up saving Will after the plane crash. The two share a moment after Will is injured when the older doctor confesses his admiration for Angus and his compassion.

All good things must come to an end.

But first, you have to set up the exit strategy. Code Black Season 3 Episode 12 did an admirable job of that. Maybe a bit too admirable. A missing teenager, a doctor on a psych hold, a floundering surgical resident, an oedipal confrontation…that's a lot to wrap up in a mere forty-five minutes.

Caring For Rox - Code Black
(CBS/Monty Brinton)

It's all about the pacing. We all remember eighth-grade literature, rising and falling action. The penultimate episode of a season is always about climbing the last stage of the last peak. It's all about the setup.

But sometimes writers bite off more than they can chew. Or more than we can swallow anyway. There were several plots that could have been axed for clarity, that did nothing to substantially move the story forward.

First on the chopping block? Angus' neurosurgery.

This is a tough one because Kathleen (Bird) York is amazing. As an OG West Wing stan, I adored her as Congresswoman Andy Wyatt, playing off of Richard Schiff as his ex-wife/baby-mama.

And she has an Oscar nomination! How do you hire a woman with an Oscar nom for best song and then have somebody else sing?!

Meta - Code Black Season 3 Episode 12
(CBS)

But blatantly wasting York's talents wasn't the only offense this storyline committed. It was also just completely pointless. And factually wrong.

In theory, it's about Angus' continued conversion to surgical asshole as illustrated by his failure to properly inform the patient about the risks of surgery. Except that it's mentioned more than once that the family met with the neurosurgeon.

And why was Elliot there? It's great that he's not moping anymore of course, but what was the explanation for his presence? Simply that he's also a Guthrie protege but that he hasn't succumbed to some kind of god complex? That's a stretch.

Leanne: I know you want to protect Ariel, but that’s my job, I’m her mother. No matter what else happens, no matter how short a time we’ve been in each other’s lives, I’m her mother. I need her to be home with me. I need her to be safe. It’s my job to help with what she’s going through. It’s my job to hold her and tell her everything’s going to be okay. And I really, really need to tell her that. And frankly, I need her to tell me that, too.

🔗 permalink: I know you want to protect Ariel, but that’s my job, I’m her mother. No matter what else…

Leanne's search for Ariel was also less than satisfactory. This plot actually held some potential, but the payoff never came. Leanne was in the same situation at minute 60 as she was at minute 1. There was absolutely no movement to her narrative arc.

What's frustrating is that it's such an easy fix. Just have one of the adults searching skid row find Ariel and, boom, cut to black. Or even find the mysterious Joy. Anything to help us feel we're actually a step closer to a resolution.

And to be fair, it's not as if the matter could have been ignored. It just needed more — a resolution of course, and maybe something about how this could impact the adoption proceedings.

Ethan's break with reality came out of nowhere. It served a purpose in that it gave Rob Lowe something to do while he waited for Rox to wake up, but it also wrote the character into a literal box.

It was quite obvious that Ethan was talking to a hallucination the whole time, of course. Why would a patient with hand laceration be hanging around the ICU? And why would he appear in a cloud of smoke?

The implied revelation that the mystery patient was a vision of Robert would only have been more obvious is Chad Lowe had been cast. He must have been too busy filming on Supergirl to make that work.

Extreme Measures - Code Black Season 3 Episode 12
(CBS)

With all the excessive drama incited by Ethan's unacknowledged feelings for Rox, Mario and Noa's breakup was positively refreshing.

These two characters have been great together, but I have total respect for the writers for giving us a story where the woman decides to pursue her own dreams even if it means ending a relationship.

And then double that respect for not having Mario beg and plead and bully and harass her into changing her mind (looking at you, Chicago Med!).

Breaking Up Is Hard To Do - Code Black Season 3 Episode 12
(CBS)

Yes, the breakup is sad. But the reality is that love doesn't always fix everything. There are a million reasons that people who love each other can't be together.

The way the breakup was handled respected the deep feeling of the characters for one another, and the feeling we had for their relationship. The shots of their hands were the perfect way to interpret the emotion of that moment.

It did leave one nagging question though. An irrelevant question given CBS's cancelation, but still nagging…were Seitzman and Co. really going to leat Emily Tyra go?!

Other Thoughts:

  • A super medical nerd nit-pick: That wasn't what receptive aphasia looks like. The general condition affects over two million Americans, and it shouldn't be that hard to get some details right. Major fail by the tech advisor!
  • Diego's dad is a dick, but that doesn't really make me like Diego any better. At a certain point in life, your demanding daddy isn't an excuse for your behavior.
  • Rob Thomas and his crooning seem to have gone the way of Pepper. Have any of you noticed? Or cared?

Mr. Berlinger: What’s wrong with doing things the old-fashioned way?

Keri: I was tired of waiting for someone else to make my best life. I can make it myself.

Ariel is missing and the cops aren't of much use. Leanne tries to distract herself at work when a stage collapses at a local college festival but quickly ends up leaving again. She heads over to Max and Owen's house in desperation. Owen is reluctant to help but ultimately caves to her pleas. Going through the kids' texts, they find out that Ariel was still in contact with a girl she met in foster care. They visit Emily, who tells them that Joy is effectively homeless. She remembers that they once mentioned the 8th street bridge, which is near Angels. Jesse, Owen, and Leanne head down to the homeless encampment, but they don't have any luck locating the errant teen.

Rox is in a medically induced coma, but Ethan is ready for her to wake up. He butts heads with the General in charge of her case and is ordered to leave the hospital and get some rest. Instead, he aids a soldier he meets in the hallway who in return helps him hack into Rox's files. After seeing her MRI, Ethan decides that the general is wrong and that she's ready to wake up. He turns off the machines in her room and sets about waking her. But because of her pneumonia and the time that she's been on a ventilator, her lung collapses. The general enters the room to find Ethan with his hand in Rox's chest. After the chest tube is placed, the general has Ethan arrested by the MPs. The mysterious wounded soldier visits Ethan in the brig…and Ethan realizes that he has the same tattoo as Robert. The general and Will watch a security feed as Ethan yells at an empty room.

Angus talks a patient into risky surgery, and Elliot thinks that he didn't appropriately inform the patient or her family about the risks of the procedure. The surgery seems to go well, and Angus is complimented by the neurosurgeon, but the patient is suffering from aphasia when she awakes. Elliot is the one that is able to connect with her, bringing a piano to her room where she plays a song she wrote for her daughter.

With two of the ER attendings out of the rotation, Mario picks up the slack when a mass casualty hits Angel's His calm under extreme pressure impresses Will, who offers him the attending position. Mario is psyched until he finds out that the program Noa is interested in is in Philadelphia. She doesn't think a long distance relationship is a good idea, and he ends things with her, knowing that she'll get the spot.

Noa works with a pregnant patient who is injured during the stage collapse. Even though the patient dies, it reaffirms her desire to change specialties and pursue the program in Philadelphia.

Diego's father is an even bigger ass than Diego. He's constantly looking for his son to screw up which only ensures such an outcome. He puts the kibosh on the documentary (even though other members of the board liked it) and starts to get a little creepy with Noa. Guthrie picks up on the tension between father and son. He doesn't let Diego continue to use it as an excuse to act like an ass, but he does give the younger doctor additional support, voicing his confidence in the intern.

When one of their own is brought in to the ER on Code Black Season 3 Episode 11, how will the team respond? Will they be able to save Rox? Read on to find out more!

Families are what you make of them.

They're not always what you expect — Code Black Season 3 Episode 11 shows us that repeatedly. Brother's aren't brothers because of DNA, but because of common bonds and shared values.

Family is obviously central to the concept of Code Black. This isn't news. Hell, two of the characters refer to themselves as Mama and Daddy.

Rox Is Injured - Code Black
(CBS/Sonja Flemming)

But as we close in on the end of the series season, it's starting to feel like there's an urgency to prove this thesis. Angus' possible daddy-hood is only one instance of this.

Too bad this story got all kinds of effed up.

Mario's interference was both atrocious and benevolent, Will's advice was total crap and hypocritical to boot, and you can't tell me that Yvonne isn't playing Angus for all she's worth.

Mario did overstep by looking into Angus' records but considering Angus was also treating this child, how in the name of all that is holy did he not pick up on the blood type incongruity? That's something from med school 101.

While it's weirdly refreshing to hear Will tell his male resident the same bs that women are usually subjected to when it comes to a work-life balance, it doesn't make what he's saying any less dumb. All I could think was what if Emily had rolled in on that conversation?

And I'm sorry, I don't care how endearing Dominic is, Angus owes that child and his mother absolutely nothing in terms of a long-term commitment. Yvonne is manipulative as all get out, and I can't believe I care this much when the end is nigh.

Will: Do you mind if I give you some unsolicited advice?

Angus: Do you normally wait to be solicited?

🔗 permalink: Do you normally wait to be solicited?

Mario's overreaching interference might be the most frustrating aspect of this plot though, if only because his other important relationship is clearly headed towards disaster. He's going to need the support of his brother best friend pretty soon.

It's really amazing to me that Mario and Noa are one of the few couples on television that actually communicate with one another and yet they're always having these massive misunderstandings.

Maybe it's because they only talk about their issues while they're at work. If they really want to compartmentalize things, that's probably not a good idea.

Hit & Run - Code Black Season 3 Episode 11
(CBS)

They're not the only ones that could stand to take that advice, of course. Rox and Ethan certainly made a mess of things by mixing up work with their burgeoning romance.

But those lines can be hard to draw, especially when one of you is dealing with some enormous stressors, like, say, your father disowning you after finding out that your brother was responsible for the massacre of school children.

And it's not like Ethan has ever suffered from an abundance of emotional intelligence.

The shock of the hit & run and the emotional wringer that Ethan is put through after definitely work as a way to jolt him out of his stubbornness and stupidity. That doesn't mean I have to like it.

The setup takes away almost all of Rox's agency in their relationship, which is even worse than casting her as the solution to all his problems. Somehow, her life being at risk is really all about him and his redemption.

Having Emo back would have been better if she'd been there to read him the riot act for how he treated her girl.

Ethan: It was mostly me disagreeing with her. She was trying to help me. I said some things…

Jae Eun: It doesn’t matter what you said then. It matters what you say now, when she wakes up.

🔗 permalink: It doesn’t matter what you said then. It matters what you say now, when she wakes up.

At the center of all of these stories, however, we do have a strong family. Leanne and Jesse are always there for each other, and should probably be offering a class on how to work with people you love when there are power dynamic issues.

Leanne certainly went through a roller coaster of emotions from the high of finding out about Ariel's court date, the shock of her friend's accident, then helping those separated twins, to going home and finding her daughter missing.

I'm exhausted just thinking about all that. Not to mention that said adoption is probably in question since she lost her kid. I don't think the court is going to look kindly on that.

Warrantless - Code Black Season 3 Episode 11
(CBS)

Leanne going out to rip the cop who arrested Mama a new one was a great moment…on the surface.

The scene was the first time I can remember this show doing a "ripped from the headlines" story, and I'm sorry to say that they didn't do that great of a job.

I needed more from this than a single scene. The abuse of power and violation of civil rights deserved more commentary than Jesse being arrested and immediately released because he guilted the lady cop.

Especially because this story has been done by other medical dramas before. Chicago Med, it pains me to say, actually did this better on Chicago Med Season 1 Episode 12. Not to mention, because they did it all, and usually did it best, ER

As crazy (and inspiring) as all the Leanne moments were, the one that stood out the most to me was her comment to Will that all the cases are personal. It wasn't really profound, and far from the most emotionally insightful thing she's said.

But it was in direct contrast to Rox's comments to Ethan before their big blowout, a comment that was repeated during his flashbacks after she was injured.

Saying that all cases are personal seems to be in direct opposition to her admonishment that you shouldn't work out your own issues through your patients. Which are we supposed to believe?

Will: Why do you always make things personal?

Leanne: Because it is personal.

🔗 permalink: Because it is personal.

Other Thoughts:

  • The long lost twins bit was so far-fetched and crazy but I LOVED it. The scene with the shots alternating between the two brothers was amazing. Brilliant writing, brilliant editing.
  • Did I miss the requisite Rob Thomas music at the end? Or was it just really forgettable? I feel cheated.
  • Still no Penny. Piper? Pepper? Petra? I don't even care about her at this point, but it bothers me that she just disappeared!

On Code Black Season 3 Episode 11, Rox is hit by a drunk driver and rushed to Angels Memorial, while Leanne is excited about good news concerning the adoption.

Leanne is excited to receive news about the adoption hearing, but can't get ahold of Ariel. When her shift finally ends, she heads home only to be alarmed that Ariel still isn't answering her. Alarm turns to panic when she reaches the girl's room and finds it empty, with her cell phone left on the bed.

Dominic's condition worsens, but Angus is kept out of the OR when he admits to Campbell that the boy may be his son. Mario tries to stop him from telling Campbell because he's been snooping and knows that Angus isn't the boy's father. Angus feels betrayed by his friend, and Noa backs him up to Mario. Angus confronts Yvonne about her deception but she tries to play it off like she really did think he was the baby-daddy. Angus tries to give her and Dominic the cold shoulder, but his warm heart wins out when the boy calls him by name.

Ethan and Rox haven't worked out their differences, but that's all put to the side when Rox get's hit by a drunk driver while they're out on a call. Ethan is frantic about his ex-partner, and his emotions interfere with his treatment of her. After getting her into Campbell's OR, he sits with Jae Eun and tries to explain what went wrong between him and her niece. Jae Eun tells him it doesn't matter what happened in the past, just what he does going forward. Rox wakes up but rejects Ethan's presence. When he and Noa pay her another visit later, she tells them that she can't feel her left hand. An MRI reveals that she has a fistula in her brain and needs invasive neurosurgery to correct the issue. Campbell isn't qualified and doesn't trust any of the surgeons in LA. Ethan finds a doctor in San Diego but Will attempts to veto the idea by saying that Rox isn't stable enough for the medivac trip. After Rox has to be intubated, Jae Eun steps in and insists that the team go with Ethan's plan. He asks why she trusts him and she tells him it's because he loves Rox.

Mario and Noa start to have problems at work, keeping future opportunities from one another and clashing in center stage. Noa takes offense to Mario's brusque teaching style and letting her personal feelings interfere with the work. She's also keeping her interest in switching to an OBGYN residency from him, although Diego finds out and offers to get her an interview with a program she's interested in…a program in Pennsylvania. Mario is frustrated with Noa's refusal to listen to his orders in the ED and doesn't immediately tell her about Leanne's offer to back him as an attending at Angel's. They finally talk to each other and sort out some of their issues, but it's obvious that the problems in their relationship run deeper than either wants to acknowledge.

Why is Ethan lashing out at Rox on Code Black Season 3 Episode 10? And why isn't Ariel speaking to Leanne? At least Elliot got some good news! Read on to find out what!

White lies can help people, but they can also snowball and cause real damage.

The doctors struggled with telling the truth on Code Black Season 3 Episode 10. They weren't trying to sell alternate facts, thank god, just struggling to protect those under their care.

But where do you draw that line? Is it more ethical to betray a confidence than tell a white lie? In the aftermath of a fight with his father, Ethan's struggle with these questions has everybody weighing in.

Diego's Documentary - Code Black
(CBS/Monty Brinton)

Before we dive into the serious stuff, let's talk about Angus! It's a crazy day when a surprise baby (toddler) is the light part of a show.

As much as he protested that he's not ready to be a daddy, I can actually see Angus taking to parenthood like a duck to water. He was naturally good with the kid, and maybe little Dominic is just what he needs to get his attitude back on track.

I did take some exception to his claim that finding out he's a parent would blow up his life. It would be tough, sure, but it's not like he would be the primary caregiver. Hell, he's already missed the physically draining parts of childrearing.

Weirdly, the thing that makes me most suspicious that Mario is right and Yvonne is pulling a con is the fact that she remembers Angus' name.

Granted, Angus isn't exactly a name you hear every day unless you're living in Glasgow or Edinburgh. But I can't remember the name of the guy I dated for three months in spring 2015. Will? John? Steve? Who knows? A one night stand? You're kidding, right?

Angus[arriving]: Who’s this little guy?

Yvonne: Dominic. He’s been sick. I was hoping his father could help. It’s kinda my last resort.

Angus: Oh, when’s he get here?

Yvonne: He just did.

🔗 permalink: He just did.

Good news, bad news: Elliot's lawsuit is over, but now we might have to like Diego. Gag me.

Watching Guthrie finally call the entitled little schmuck on his bad behavior was absolutely glorious. The moment we've all been waiting for minus one thing. The missing link was somebody smashing his overpriced camera.

But then the smarmy little turd had to go and do something altruistic, something that put an abrupt end to the never-ending, never-developing storyline from hell.

Crossing The Line - Code Black Season 3 Episode 10
(CBS)

The only downside to the lawsuit getting resolved is that it may mean we see less of Noah Gray-Cabey. I'd love to see him step up and have another arc, but there are only three more installments in the season.

Unless Michael Seitzman and the team can convince Netflix or another outlet to pick up the show, this may have been Dr. Dixon's last big moment.

Ethan and Rox's story, however, is far from over. You had to know it wasn't going to be smooth sailing though, right, even if the end game has been as obvious as the nose on Rob Lowe's oppressively handsome face.

I'm sure I wasn't the only one more than a little frustrated with Ethan's douchy behavior. Just because it's integral to the basic three-part narrative structure doesn't mean we have to like it.

I did find it hilariously ironic that Rox was condemning Ethan for using patients as a proxy to work out his own issues. That's the basis for every single case on every single medical drama ever.

Rox: Why are you acting like this? I’m just trying to be your friend. You’re in pain and I care —

Ethan: I’m not in pain. And nobody asked you to care.

🔗 permalink: I’m not in pain. And nobody asked you to care.

Other Thoughts:

  • Emily Alyn Lind yet again showed us why there should be a Best Young Actor/Actress category at all awards shows. And kudos to the writing team for giving this character depth instead of just making her a hot mess.

  • A story about a closeted action hero was a crappy way to close out Pride Month. Drake needs to go watch Sens8 and learn how to come out like a real hero.

  • Still no Piper/Pepper. Maybe she had a delayed reaction to the fentanyl? Is she an addict now?

Ethan isn't doing well after the revelation about Robert's time in Afghanistan and his father's denouncement. He keeps pushing Rox away, even lashing out at her when she tries to help him. He finds himself projecting onto a patient who doesn't want to tell her son that her brain cancer is back, feeling that she's not being fair to him and giving him the chance to be with her as she dies. She feels guilty about up-ending his life during her last go-round with cancer and wants to give him the chance to follow his dreams. Ethan goes head to head with Will about informing the son, getting pulled off the case in the end. He goes to apologize to the patient, who tries to give him another perspective on why his father sent his brother away when their mother was ill. The son canceled his plans, having figured out that his mother was sick again and deciding to stay.

Rox shadows Leanne for the day and helps treat an action star and his after they are in a car accident. Their daughter walks on on her father and his agent in an intimate embrace and freaks out, feeling even more betrayed when she finds out that her mom was also in on the secret. Rox counsels the girl, and she eventually ends up forgiving her parents.

Ariel is despondent, so Leanne asks Will if Emily can try to help her with her grief about Max. Ariel isn't happy when she finds out about the plotting, and Emily isn't thrilled that her dad expected her to lie to her friend. Ariel finally talks to Leanne and it's apparent that although she's grieving Max, she's more upset about the possibility of being taken from Leanne and has displaced that as anger at Leanne for supposedly lying to her. Although Leanne has a clearer picture of the problem at the end of the episode, she doesn't have any way to alleviate the girl's fears.

Angus gets the shock of a lifetime when a former one night stand shows up in the ER and tells him that her son is also his. Mario is skeptical about her claim and urges his friend to have a paternity test down, but Angus is bent on helping Yvonne's son regardless. Through his perseverance, they find out that the boy has a hereditary arrhythmia, but his paternity is left unresolved. Angus isn't ready to be a father but tells Mario that he'll "do the right thing" if the test comes back positive.

Elliot's day doesn't start well when the jury in his lawsuit is obviously moved by the widow's testimony. Diego is intent on filming everything about the movie star's case, especially about how he's secretly gay, and Guthrie is pissed when he finds him lurking outside the patient's room, covertly filming. He kicks him out of the hospital, telling him he needs to work on his humanity and compassion. Later, Diego pages Guthrie and Elliot to the lounge, where he's waiting with the lawsuit widow. He's convinced her to drop the case by showing her the footage of her husband's treatment and Elliot's reaction to his death. Guthrie reluctantly gives him another chance, but tells him he still needs to work on his attitude.
