We have some bad news for fans of Chapelwaite.

The horror drama will not be returning for a second season.

Co-creator and Executive Producer Jason Filardi took to X to share the sad news.

"I'm afraid Captain Boone's story ends on that beach of weathered, Maine sand," Filardi posted.

"There will be no Season 2. Thank you to all the Chapelwaite fans!"

Rebecca Suited Up - Chapelwaite Season 1 Episode 1
(Chris Reardon/Epix)

Chapelwaite launched in August 2021, with the development of a second season being announced shortly after.

But with a lack of updates, fans were left pondering what would become of the series.

Unfortunately, it's likely that no episodes were produced for the planned second season, and EPIX becoming MGM+ likely changed the streamer's priorities away from making the new season.

Set in the 1850s, the Chapelwaite follows Captain Charles Boone (Adrien Brody), who relocates his family of three children to his ancestral home in the small, seemingly sleepy town of Preacher's Corners, Maine, after his wife dies at sea.

(Chris Reardon/Epix)

However, Charles will soon have to confront the secrets of his family's sordid history and fight to end the darkness that has plagued the Boones for generations.

Emily Hampshire (Schitt's Creek) played Rebecca Morgan, an ambitious young woman who left Preacher's Corners to attend Mount Holyoke College and has returned home with an advance to write a story for the new and prestigious Atlantic Magazine.

Her writer's block lifts when Boone arrives in town with his children, and despite her mother's protests, Rebecca applies to be the governess of the infamous Chapelwaite manor and the Boone family in order to write about them.

In doing so, Rebecca will not only craft the next great gothic novel, she'll unravel a mystery that has plagued her own family for years.

(Chris Reardon/Epix)

In addition to Brody, Chapelwaite was executive produced by Donald De Line (Ready Player One, Wayward Pines), Jason Filardi, Peter Filardi and Burr Steers.

Chapelwaite Season 1 was bursting at the seams with thrills and chills, meaning the decision to end the series with so many loose ends won't sit well with fans.

There was a desire from fans to have a resolution, so, unfortunately, the series has ended.

With the first season ending over two years ago, there were questions about its future.

In other MGM+ news, the streaming service has ordered true-crime docuseries The Wonderland Murders & The Secret History of Hollywood.

The series is based on Michael Connelly's (Bosch; The Lincoln Lawyer) hit Audible podcast of the same name.

Directed by Alison Ellwood (San Francisco Sounds, Laurel Canyon), the four-episode docuseries will be the definitive examination of the infamous Wonderland murder case in 1980s Los Angeles.

The Wonderland Murders & the Secret History of Hollywood was released exclusively on Audible as a limited documentary podcast series, and audiences have spent 150,000 hours listening to Connelly's riveting investigation.

On July 1, 1981, four people were discovered severely beaten to death in a suburban home in Laurel Canyon on Wonderland Avenue.

The murders' aftermath spans two decades and reaches into present day with details, subplots, and investigative twists that prove the old adage that truth is stranger than fiction.

From a bought-off juror to the biggest porn actor of his generation, an alleged corrupt federal agent and a kind of Zelig of Hollywood's dark underbelly, much about the case remains unresolved, and there are people who got away with murder.

"Through explosive in-depth reporting, new developments, rare archival footage, and pivotal testimony from "missing witness" Scott Thorson (best known as Liberace's boyfriend and the writer of the tell-all Behind the Candelabra)," the logline teases, adding:

"Wonderland Murders will delve into the gruesome crime that has captured the public's imagination for nearly half a century, and tell a broader story about Los Angeles, the American dream, and when justice does—and doesn't—work."

The series is produced by Sony Pictures Television's The Intellectual Property Corporation (IPC) and Miziker Content, and executive produced by Michael Connelly, Alison Ellwood, Jen Casey and Nick Gilhool, Eli Holzman and Aaron Saidman for IPC, and Rick Jackson.

Genre TV is always hit or miss, but that doesn't stop them from being made! Check out our list of the best (and worst!) of this year's Super/Sci-Fi series!

2021 brought us a lot of TV, including many new entries for Science Fiction and Fantasy lovers.

There was plenty of new high-profile Fantasy/Sci-Fi series this year (Wheel of Time, Foundation) that were a pleasure to watch.

On the other side of things, some returning series (Rick and Morty, The Walking Dead) continued their reign of popularity.

Collage for Super Sci-Fi Slide
(Syfy/CW/CW)

Check out the list to see if your favorites (or least favorites!) made it!

As always, please share with us in the comments below what you think should've made the list!

School Time - Chucky
(USA Network)

Best – Chucky

Chucky doesn't disappoint, invoking cheer and disgust (only the best kind of disgust!).

Bringing back characters from the film series is a load of treats for fans, and the odd use of Chucky actor Brad Dourif's real-life daughter is brave and creative.

It's gore-alicious!

Under The Lights - Roswell, New Mexico Season 3 Episode 13
(John Golden Britt/The CW)

Best – Roswell, New Mexico

After two seasons that were uneven at best, Roswell came back for season 3 and was on top of their game.

They gave us the series' best villain to date, the deliciously evil Mr. Jones, played to perfection by Nathan Dean, who juggled two very different roles all season long and did it effortlessly.

The season had more sci-fi and more significant action pieces but kept the romance and other little things that fans have come to know and love.

It wasn't a flawless season, but it was their best season to date, and it has us and fans alike excited to see what's next.

Intergalactic
(Peacock/Syfy/Sky)

Worst – Intergalactic

We wanted to love it, but, man, did it get tedious after, say, episode 1.

It held promise and had some crazy characters, but the drama didn't intrigue.

We hoped for something great, but to say that Intergalactic was a disappointment is an understatement.

Midnight Mass
((c) Courtesy of Netflix 2021)

Best – Midnight Mass

Midnight Mass brought us some tremendous religious horror, a genre that intrigues and scares.

From the folks who brought us The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor comes Midnight Mass, a genuinely malicious program.

Midnight Mass, though, is more unique than its predecessors and — for those who are adversely affected by frightening TV — more nightmarish.

The Winx Crew
(Netflix)

Worst – Fate: The Winx Saga

We will never get our fill of adaptations. Still, this one disappointed right out of the gate with its questionable casting that had social media in an uproar and the Riverdale-esque dark, gritty, and more adult take on a fun, upbeat series.

Fate: The Winx Saga is bad because it's boring and unoriginal. The series has way too many characters, barely develops any of them outside of Bloom, and the initial storyline wasn't captivating.

It was a quick binge, but you forgot everything that you watched by the time it was over. It doesn't give you any reason to tune back in, which speaks volumes.

Worse yet, the series takes itself too seriously, which makes all the events you're watching transpire laughable more than intriguing.

Suped Up - Superman & Lois Season 1 Episode 15
(Bettina Strauss/The CW)

Best – Superman & Lois

The CW had a larger budget with this Arrowverse show, and it showed.

With better cinematography and special effects, this version of Superman almost felt like movie quality.

The fight scenes were epic, and we delved into the Kent family dynamics between Clark, Lois, and the boys as Jordan tried to learn how to handle his powers.

Jupiter's Legacy
((c) Courtesy of Netflix 2021)

Worst – Jupiter's Legacy

It's too bad the show's narrative didn't match the budget and star-studded cast.

For a series about superheroes in this day and age when they're a dime a dozen, Jupiter's Legacy failed to deliver anything of substance, quality, or interest.

They had a lot of action sequences, but overall, the dark take on the plight of superherodom and conflict between different generations wasn't the least bit compelling.

And the glacial pacing made an eight-episode season feel like a whole 22 episode order, but sadly, not in a good way. Everyone looked pretty in their costumes, though.

Tall - Hologram Rick and Morty - Rick and Morty Season 4 Episode 1
(Screenshot from “Edge of Tomorty: Rick Die Rickpeat”/Adult Swim)

Best – Rick & Morty

Dan Harmon and Mark Roiland's jaw-dropping, eye-popping, dimension-hopping fever dream hit new levels of insanity with its fifth season.

Zany, frantic, and shockingly deep, Rick and Morty are a psychedelic peek into a universe full of magic, horror, and possibilities.

Don't overthink about it. Just try to keep up and enjoy the ride!

We're always so excited to see what a new season will bring and cannot wait for the future!

Day of the Dead Syfy
(Syfy/Michael Stack)

Worst – Day of the Dead

A horrible horror entry that dares to use the same name as George A. Romero's brilliant 1985 zombie flick, we couldn't get past episode 1.

This show contains everything that screams cheesy Syfy original movie (cheesy acting, worse effects), just made into a depressing full-length series.

Syfy always cancels their great shows to spit out horrible shows like this (*coughs* Wynonna Earp *coughs*), and we hope that this show sees an early death.

Invincible, Mark
(Michael Stack)

Best – Invincible

Invincible took your typical superhero story and spun it on its head. It's gory, grotesque, violent head — and we loved it.

Invincible managed to make an animated superhero show one of the most heartfelt stories of the year while also giving us incredible action.

Creating a unique superhero show in an already oversaturated genre is an impressive feat in itself.

Back in the Donovan House - SurrealEstate Season 1 Episode 10
(Derm Carberry/Blue Ice Pictures/SYFY)

Worst – SurrealEstate

Canadian horror/sci-fi series is hit or miss. Wynonna Earp was a hit, and we wanted Tim Rozon and Susan Levy's latest joint effort to hit the right marks.

While there were building blocks to do things right and a few episodes that tickled the funny bone, the storylines weren't consistent in facts or entertainment value, and it was something to make fun of instead of delight in.

SurrealEstate could have been so much better, but sadly, it dropped the ball.

A Discovery of Witches
(BBC/Michael Stack)

Best – A Discovery of Witches

A Discovery of Witches (based on the book series of the same name) never ceases to impress.

Season two saw some amazing twists that we didn't expect, combined with the growth of the character we love.

We are so excited for the third and final season!

Charles Faces an Unfriendly Bunch - Chapelwaite Season 1 Episode 2
(Chris Reardon/Epix)

Worst – Chapelwaite

Adrien Brody and Emily Hampshire toplining one of the worst shows of the year?

It seems so, and you shouldn't be surprised since this was yet another Stephen King adaptation that fell flat.

At times seeming to tell multiple different stories — grieving family, an ambitious woman feeding off of newcomers, vampires, immigration/racism in small-town America — it meandered thoughtlessly and never got the heart racing. Too bad.

Sun with Gun Black Summer Season 2
((c) Courtesy of Netflix 2021)

Best – Black Summer

The best zombie series you aren't watching is Black Summer, and season two improved on the most entertaining season one.

The second season, set during the apocalypse's first winter, shows what it's like living with it for half a year — and the emotions behind losing people on the way.

It's emotionally powerful and contains some of the best zombie scenes of the year.

We love the performances of all of the actors and hope that we get to see them for at least one more season.

The Expanse Holden and Avasarala
(Amazon Studios)

Best – The Expanse

With the second half of season five and two-thirds of the final season airing in 2021, The Expanse made waves with its 6th season. Initially, on SYFY, Amazon picked up the space-opera for seasons 4-6, and the series has taken off (pun intended).

The Expanse is the perfect space opera, and we cannot wait for the series finale in 2022 (even though the last thing we want is for this show to end).

Led by an incredible cast that has been severely overlooked at significant awards, The Expanse will be the Science Fiction Series to remember from this decade.

The most impressive of the latter half of the fifth season came from Dominique Tipper's stellar portrayal of Naomi Nagata's fight for her life. Brilliant storytelling combined with her outstanding performance made for an incredible season.

Naomi Nagata, Trapped - The Expanse
(Amazon Studios)

Well, Fanatics, did one of your shows make our list?

Are there any that you'd add? Sound off in the comments below!

There's so much more genre TV out there right now, and we can't wait to see where they go from here!

Our review of Chapelwaite Season 1 Episode 2 tries to make sense of Preacher's Corners' miseries, lurking men, and whether Charles moving the family was a good idea.

Perhaps the rumors flowing through Preacher's Corners about the Boone family aren't so far off the mark, after all.

Another foray into town, an unexpected visitor to the house (or two), and an empty grave suggest there is a lot more to Chapelwaite than Charles ever imagined.

If the premiere was our introduction to the house itself, Chapelwaite Season 1 Episode 2 lent credence to some of the negativity surrounding the Boone family.

The Surprise of the Night - Chapelwaite
(Chris Reardon/Epix)
That Scarecrow Didn't Work - Chapelwaite Season 1 Episode 2
(Chris Reardon/Epix)

It seems unlikely that Charles, Honor, Loa, and Tane will find the fresh start they were seeking. Their story is only beginning, but it's impossible to imagine that with what's been uncovered so far, things will get any better the longer they remain.

Charles' plans for the mill included investing in Preacher's Corners with 50 lucrative jobs for those who wanted them, but an increasingly unhinged Samuel and Daniel's wife, Rose, crushed those dreams, leaving Charles standing alone in the dust with a look of defeat on his face.

Things in town are, to say the least, weird. Children dying, odd-looking people reeking of death lurk around, and people go missing without a trace.

That doesn't even count Faith, eager to give birth, discovering her child to be born with more challenges than a little one should have to suffer, either.

Charles Stands Defeated - Chapelwaite Season 1 Episode 2
(Chris Reardon/Epix)

Charles has made one acquaintance in town. The preacher, Martin, holds no malice toward Charles or the Boones, even as his two children perished after befriending Marcella Boone.

His wife, Alice, is more heavily influenced by her father and intense grief for her dead children.

Even if Charles moved mountains to bring prosperity to Preacher's Corners, these people need a bad guy because to believe they are at fault for what's happening around them would be too much to bear.

It would be nice if they would be a little more compassionate in the wake of so much misery. If Rose is concerned about her children, how does she think ruining the lives of the Boone children will do anyone any good?

Some Man of God You Are - Chapelwaite Season 1 Episode 2
(Chris Reardon/Epix)

Alice and Samuel consider themselves God-fearing people, but they don't follow the word of God to treat others.

As if Faith wasn't suffering enough, Alice visited her to berate her and her child, swiftly bringing in the baby's father as a ne'er do well who abandoned Faith when she needed him most.

As she painted an ugly picture of the man who fathered Faith's child, Alice had no idea she was talking about her husband. And she's such an unhappy person. So who could blame Martin for stepping out on her?

Martin really wants to get away from his wife, and he feels quite deeply for Faith, enough that he wants to love and support her and the child, and promises to whisk them away to California at the first opportunity.

Are They Pilgrams? - Chapelwaite Season 1 Episode 2
(Chris Reardon/Epix)

Darkness is chasing Faith, though, and the longer they wait, the more difficult leaving will become. He's smitten and unable to understand the dangers she's professing, so it's not hard to see disaster written all over this situation.

Of course, disaster seems to be Preacher's Corners only asset, such that it is.

Closer to home, a man is lurking in the house. At first, it almost seemed spectral. But after his troubling dream and thoughts of worms and the white as a ghost woman blocking his carriage in the street, Charles dug up the family plot. It was empty.

Whether his family is risen from the dead or trying to pull a con on Charles for reasons he doesn't understand is suddenly on the table. Charles, being an intelligent man, believes it's the latter.

Charles Shares His Plans - Chapelwaite Season 1 Episode 2
(Chris Reardon/Epix)

Recent bloody deaths and the persistent nagging of something evil in his brain that is consistent with what he hears from others, like the apple-bearing girl in the street, should be forcing Charles to dig deeper.

And part of him does, but the other part is trying desperately to provide a stable, loving home for his children. That's not an easy task with their reception or Rebecca's continuing suggestions that they try to fit in.

Her plan for the children to go to school failed, with Loa tripped, and her beloved necklace from her mother destroyed. Even the trip to town in costume to get candy for Hallow's Eve found them candy-less and attacked once again just for being Boones.

Little Susan somehow tramped all the way out to Chapelwaite in her nightgown in the rain to scare the hell out of them looking for Stephen, a calling she carried with her to her death bed. If she was waiting for him, maybe he's who grabbed Mary in her bedroom.

The Boone Children Try School - Chapelwaite Season 1 Episode 2
(Chris Reardon/Epix)

Charles did have one success with the help of a craftsman in town who created a brace that would help Loa walk steadier with more control. Unfortunately, it still didn't seem like enough to soothe her spirits.

At least he's aware and trying. If I was having visions of worm infestation and ripping my own face apart to free them, I'm not sure I'd be able to keep up the pretense.

And, surely, there is something to what Rebecca discovered about her father's work for the Boones. It was more recent than she expected and mentioned Jakub and a book. So let's be on the lookout for those.

Essentially, Chapelwaite is about people in various stages of misery and grief whose lives are impacted by men lurking in the dark and a mysterious illness claiming even their young children.

Rebecca In the Library - Chapelwaite Season 1 Episode 2
(Chris Reardon/Epix)

Sounds peaceful, right?

I bet Charles wishes he's never taken his wife's deathbed wish to heart.

Their life on the water is starting to look downright homey in comparison to all of this.

We've got an exclusive clip for you from Chapelwaite Season 1 Episode 2.

It shows Rebecca's playful side as she escorts the Boone family to town for the Halloween celebration.

Rebecca is doing her best to integrate Charles and the kids into her world, but with her writer's urges, it seems like she may be taking more chances than necessary.

It was just on Chapelwaite Season 1 Episode 1 that the Boone's arrived to a less-than-welcoming Preacher's Corners, so should they be pushing the envelope to fit in?

Rebecca's motives for joining the family aren't exactly clear.

It's pretty clear that she's either not familiar with children or has some sort of ulterior motive for being at Chapelwaite.

You do not tell ghost stories to three children who just lost their mother, moved to a foreign town, and live in a sprawling, creepy mansion.

Living in Preacher's Corners, Rebecca knows that the disdain for the Boones will never abate.

Yet here she is again, taking them to town for some merriment, damned the potential consequences.

True, the children have lived on the water and have never experienced the joy that can come from confronting ghouls and goblins for treats.

But since the Boones ARE the goblins, in this case, it seems less than wise.

Short Lived Merriment - Chapelwaite Season 1 Episode 2
(Chris Reardon/Epix)

And if you think I'm being a tad dramatic, the clip finds Rebecca going the ghoulish route with Charles, even poking the hornets' nest by mentioning the rumored madness associated with Preacher's Corners.

Going a step further, she toys with him about the insanity of the entrepreneur, a type that tosses caution to the wind trying to create and motivate.

Charles has big plans for the town, which will become apparent in this episode. Unfortunately, her words seem foreboding as to how well they'll be received.

If one good thing comes out of the exchange, it's that Charles sees a different side of the townsfolk.

Does She Have Sinister Motives? - Chapelwaite Season 1 Episode 2
(Chris Reardon/Epix)

The normally dour bunch surprises him with their ability to have some fun, which he didn't expect.

Take a look at the clip now, and return here on Sunday for a full review of the new episode after it airs on Epix, beginning at 10/9c.

A girl named Faith is giving birth in town. The baby is in breach, and she's having a tough time. When Mrs. Clores sees the baby, she's freaked out. And the baby sounds super strange.

He's got a cleft palate and other issues.

Rebecca finds a file in the library. Morgan and Mason. She examines it. A letter from her dad mentions Jakub and a historical book.

Charles offers for her to keep the letters, but she doesn't have much regard for her father and passes.

In town, Rose is looking for Edward. He hasn't come home. Daniel is on his way to the mill. If Edward is there, he'll send him home.

Charles is having Loa looked at for her bad leg. Her doctor thinks that her leg is stronger than it looks. He wants to prescribe a tincture, but Charles was hoping for something new.

Loa wants to go home. The kids are going to school, but they are far from welcome. Rebecca hopes they get on fine.

Charles visits the church. The minister, Martin, and his wife, Alice, lost their children two years ago, and they took a death photo of the children that also had Marcella Boone in the photo.

Charles would like to address the congregation with a business proposal. The minister thinks handing him the pulpit wouldn't go over well, but he can address them at a social gathering later today. Martin doesn't believe that the Boone's were responsible for his children's death.

Charles is riding home when the horse is spooked again. There is a feral woman in the street, barefoot, eating an apple. Charles just rides on by, and she returns to the street again. The worm is calling, she says.

The teacher asks Loa to show them where the kingdom of Hawaii is. She gets all of the island territories correct, surprising the teacher.

Walking back to her desk, one of the boys trips her, and then a creep pulls her necklace off.

Rebecca asks the kids if there was anything good about their day. Nope.

The minister's wife is whispering about the deformed baby. He's not impressed. He says she sounds just like her father.

The child was a bastard.

Before they begin their supper, Charles addresses the crowd, much to their dismay.

Charles wants to bring the shipping industry to the town. Samuel tries to toss dirt onto his plan.

Charles will pay top wages to fifty men, and some seem interested.

Minister Burrows visits someone to talk about Faith and the baby. It appears that the baby is his.

He wants to love the child nonetheless, but Faith doesn't want to stay. Nothing good will stay for staying in Preacher's Corners. He says they'll leave. He'll take them to California.

Charles checks on Loa, and when he closes her bedroom door, a man is lurking behind it. He crosses the room to stand before her. His hand is blue. He touches her forehead.

Charles sees the light under Rebecca's door but doesn't approach. She comes out and asks about the meeting. They share a drink.

Charles is having trouble sleeping again. He's recalling the troubling incident from his childhood and hearing knocking. When someone knocks on the door, everyone goes to the door, Charles with his pistol. It's a child.

The child has dirty feet and wet hair. It's Susan Mallory. Is my papa here, she asks?

She was sleepwalking. When they snap her out of it, she's scared to death. Rebecca takes her home.

Charles shaves with a straight-edged razor while the girls ask about the illness. Rebecca gives them details.

While shaving, a worm falls out of Charles's nose. He begins to panic. He slashes his nose with the razor.

But it was all an illusion. He's incredibly relieved.

The kids are upset that their mother's shells are missing.

Alice visits Faith and wonders what man could have abandoned her with such a burden. Just before Alice arrived, the girl from the road was in the yard.

Alice wonders why Faith would protect whoever did this. He doesn't love her. Alice is a pain in the ass and quite rude.

Faith's son has no eyes, either. It's very sad.

Charles visits Joseph Palmer to get something of his own design made by the day's end. Joseph warns Charles that it will be difficult to change minds after what they suffered from his family.

Susan's mother embarrasses herself when Charles is waiting for men to sign up for the jobs. Samuel taunts him. Everyone who was nearby wanders off now. Charles is on his own.

Charles got something for Loa. It's a new brace that he designed for her. She'll have a chance to try it out on All Hallow's Eve.

I think the man with the Mutton Chops, George, the sheriff, is concerned when his wife, Mary, doesn't want to partake in the fun.

Nobody will give the kids treats, so it's another disappointment for them.

Someone gives the kids candy, and Emery tosses flour on them to make them white. Abel helps them, and Emery runs off, saying he will get his pa, who will fix them Boones.

Susan is dying. She says that Stephen will bring Papa. She's sure of it. Martin was like, uh, what? Susan says, here they come. That's them at the window. Papa's here with my friend, Stephen, Susan says and then dies.

Rose says that it was Stephen Boone who killed Susan. They're getting a little hysterical.

The sheriff ends Hallow's Eve with a gunshot to the sky.

At home, Mary hears branches on the window and calls for George. When she closes the bedroom door, the window is open, and a man grabs her from behind.

Charles ushers everyone to their rooms and digs up Stephen.

Rebecca watches through the window. Charles finds the casket padlocked, and when he opens it, it's empty.

Chapelwaite Season 1 Episode 1 introduces us to the Boone family and their new house in Preacher's Corners in this adaptation of a Stephen King short story. Our review.

He doesn't know it yet, but Chapelwaite was always in the future for Charles Boone.

Charles has always believed he'd go crazy like his father, but he had no basis for his belief other than the genetic predilection for it.

On Chapelwaite Season 1 Episode 1, Charles believes that moving to the family estate left to him after his cousin's death will be a fresh start after his wife's death. He's wrong.

The Boones Arrive in Preacher's Corner - Chapelwaite
(Chris Reardon/Epix)

Until his wife passed, Charles was fine raising his three children on his whaler. When she died, and Chapelwaite fell into his lap, Charles decided to abide by her wishes for her children to have a house and a home.

From the moment the Boones set foot in Preacher's Corners, everything is against them.

Charles Looks Over His Shoulder - Chapelwaite Season 1 Episode 1
(Chris Reardon/Epix)

Their excitement to put down roots is soured as they receive a chilly reception in town, and even the house's caretaker hopes to cut and run, leaving Charles and the kids to figure out how everything goes on their own.

Still grieving, the Boones must live in the filthy house on a property far away from other Preacher's Corners residents. The latter is probably for the best given the townsfolk's thoughts on the Boones in general.

From the moment they step into Chapelwaite, things are off. There are portraits ripped out of frames in the portrait gallery, birds kicking up a fuss, troubling scratches on the floor, noises in the walls, and worms in the basement.

Despite that, Charles' eldest daughter, Honor, thinks they'll be happy there. His young son, Tane, is inclined to agree.

(Chris Reardon/Epix)

Middle child, Toa, though, has a different opinion on the matter. She senses the same things that Charles does. While he's trying to wade through them without scaring the kids, Toa is just plain scared.

Toa is the most interesting of the children. Initially refusing to communicate, it gets worse when she does. She's going to keep the family on its toes, and she will not just go along to get along.

Offering a glimmer of hope to the Boones is Rebecca Morgan, an aspiring fiction writer in need of inspiration. With all that she knows of the Boones and all that Charles and his immediate family do not know, she sees an opportunity for inspiration and leaps on it.

It's no surprise that Charles skipped the due diligence in hiring someone to look after things after learning in Preacher's Corners that they'd find no friends because the family reputation wouldn't allow it.

The Boones Visit Preacher's Corner - Chapelwaite Season 1 Episode 1
(Chris Reardon/Epix)

If the townspeople thought that the Boones were the cause of an affliction slowly taking the lives of their friends and family, accepting Rebecca's inquiry might be the best they can do.

And Rebecca is charming, sweet, educated, and she bonds with the family quickly.

Unlike others in Preacher's Corners, she doesn't appear to be spooked by the house or the Boones; otherwise, she wouldn't have been telling the kids ghost stories just after they moved into a dark and moody mansion on the heels of their mother's death.

She might be in over her head, though. Rebecca didn't realize the extent of the animosity for the family she connected with. With a pure heart, she hoped others might accept the family if they attended church and showed themselves to be people of faith.

Rebecca Suited Up - Chapelwaite Season 1 Episode 1
(Chris Reardon/Epix)

But when you're turned away at church, what is there that you can count on?

If anything, Samuel and his daughter, Minister Burrow's wife, are nastier than the others because of their strong faith. It's easier to take that kind of attitude from people prone to superstitions and other lore. People of faith are expected to have more love in their hearts.

So far, the Boones have been rejected by the housekeeper, the mill employees, the constable, and the minister's family. That doesn't even count sick little Susan's father.  Still, the illness isn't a figment of their imagination. They're battling something over which they have no control.

If Charles arrived with the belief that he might wind up like his father, their reception couldn't have helped how he feels.

Charles Hugs Loa - Chapelwaite Season 1 Episode 1
(Chris Reardon/Epix)

But Chapelwaite isn't going to unveil what's happening in Preacher's Corners right out of the gate. The approach is for everything to simmer, with each episode adding a little more fuel to the fire.

We'll watch as Charles hopes to make a go of it. He fully intends to work the mill and find success in Preacher's Corners. Sadly, it might be a pipe dream. There are a few unenthusiastic employees still on the payroll, but they aren't trustworthy or motivated.

Thankfully, Charles does have one man worth his weight in Abel, and he intends to pay him accordingly. Charles seems like a very fair manager, hoping to reward men for production.

What could have happened upon their arrival would have been enough. But what did happen means Charles and his family will be fighting every step of the way to make the most of their new situation.

Something's Seriously Wrong With This Girl - Chapelwaite Season 1 Episode 1
(Chris Reardon/Epix)

Something is out there. Their worst fears will come to light. Just ask Susan's father.

Stephen King adaptations aren't easy to pull off. Taking a short story and extending it as they do here makes the producers' job even harder.

Having binge-watched the season, I can see a satisfactory conclusion. Whether you'll feel the same watching it weekly remains to be seen. Whether you're familiar with the source material could also make a difference.

As much as I love this cast, the incessant whispering does begin to grate after a while. I can't tell if it was a conscious decision for everyone to speak in a harsh whisper, or it just felt right to those playing the characters.

Rebecca Lights the Way - Chapelwaite Season 1 Episode 1
(Chris Reardon/Epix)

It is my single biggest complaint about the production, though. Allowing the story to simmer before revealing what the Boones are up against is a slow burn that works for me. I'm eager to hear your thoughts after the first hour.

What did you think of the premiere? Will you be watching along?

Beginning this Sunday, Chapelwaite is the new Epix series adaptation of Stephen King's short story, Jerusalem's Lot.

Starring Adrien Brody and Emily Hampshire, Chapelwaite takes viewers to Preacher's Corners, where Charles takes his family to reside in his ancestral home.

Produced by Peter Filardi, Jason Filardi, and Donald De Line, Chapelwaite follows the Boone family and their governess, Rebecca, as they try to fit into a hostile environment at home and in town that, despite their best efforts, seems hellbent on making their lives miserable.

We had the opportunity to talk with stars Brody and Hampshire and the producers for an introduction to the series.

We'll be reviewing Chapelwaite weekly, and if you're a fan of King, this might be the adaptation of his work that you've been waiting for.

It's a haunting and heartfelt tale that immerses you in the Boones' experience, bringing Preacher's Corner and the tragedy that defines it to life.

While talking with the producers, we discussed their challenges in taking a short story into the span of ten episodes.

Rebecca Morgan on the Stairs
(Courtesty of EPIX/Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc.)

We also discussed their thought process behind keeping the secrets of Preacher's Corners shrouded in mystery.

Stephen King's works aren't always an easy bet as adaptations, and we discussed how they came to choose Jerusalem's Lot into a TV series.

Their discovery process led them to believe that there is a world of possibilities in this world, and they share their thoughts on moving beyond Chapelwaite Season 1.

Take a look at the interview in full.

With Emily, we talked about how she decided to take the role of Rebecca, and what she reveals are prophetic circumstances that made it practically impossible not to do it.

Rebecca Morgan is a new addition to King's story, and Emily chats about how honored she is to introduce her into this world.

If the series is dark and moody, Emily says the production itself was downright haunted, and she's got a great tale to tell about it.

Allow her to act as your tour guide as you plan your next getaway.

Adrien Brody plays the brooding Captain Charles Boone, and he found many things about doing Chapelwaite alluring. As a fan of Stephen King, he likes the writing style and the show's interpretation.

Charles faces a lot when he takes his family to Preacher's Corners, and Adrien appreciates how Charles deals with his challenges.

After The Pianist (which I called The Piano in the interview because, oh, why not make such a gaffe live?), Adrien has enjoyed finding roles outside of that serious tone before and after and chats about that journey.

Finally, Adrien explains how he views Chapelwaite and what he connects to in the work.

We'll be covering the show weekly, so be here after the premiere for a full review!

Chapelwaite premieres on Epix on Sunday, August 22 at 10/9c.

Massachusetts, 1817

A young boy is sleeping, and they wake to the sound of a shovel hitting the dirt. There is a man outside of his window digging a hole next to a blazing fire. The kid ducks when he's spotted in the window, and the man starts pounding on the door. There is screaming down below as the man begins beating the boy's mother.

Groaning like an animal, the man chokes her to death before going after the boy hiding in a trunk.

His father chases Charles outside, where he bonks him in the head with the shovel and tosses him into the open grave. As he's shoveling dirt onto Charles, Charles' mother shoots dad dead, and he falls next to Charles.

Mom says Charles has to go far, far away.

1850 on the Whaler Narwhal on the Sea of Japan

Charles is an adult who has lost his wife. She didn't want him to raise the girls on the ship. The girls need a home and school. He has been worried that he'll become like his father, but she knew that he wouldn't.

God sent them a gift in his cousin's letter, she told him.

Nobody is sleeping. The kids are outside. Their boy, Tane, thinks that they might have put their mother in the water alive. He heard scratching and thought it was her trying to get back into the ship. Honor and Loa are there, too.

Loa hasn't spoken all day.

When the family gets to Chapelwaite, they cannot believe that it's so big. Bigger than they imagined. Mrs. Clores, the former housekeeper, is there to greet them. Her absence has left the house victim to vandals.

Mrs. Clores isn't thrilled with their arrival and turns down a governess position. She has no desire to be in that house any longer.

Whipperwhils outside kick up a fuss, and she has never seen them during the day.

The house is a mess. Things have been toppled, and it's filthy.

The picture of Charles' father is ripped out of its frame. He tells the kids he was peculiar and not worth mentioning further.

Charles takes some items to the cellar, where he finds scratch marks on the floor. He is disconcerted.

The basement walls are filled with worms.

Charles tells the girls that nobody goes down there as it's not safe.

Honor thinks they're going to like it here.

Charles hears a noise in the walls. He thinks it's rats. He and Loa listen to the wall, but the rats are being clever now.

Charles has asked a man named Mr. Fletcher to bring rat traps, but the man is confused since he doesn't see anything to indicate rats.

Tane is in the weeds with a sickle and finds a cemetery. He screams for his father.

It scares the kids.

Writer, Rebecca Morgan, is pressured to write. She's walking with her mother when they see the new Boones come into town.

Rebecca follows their carriage.

Elsewhere in town, a house is marked quarantine. A minister assures the parents of a girl that she'll pull through.

The neighbors speak poorly of the children, who look like they've just left the reservation. Charles tells them that it's because they don't look like them.

Charles visits the Constable, George. George isn't excited to meet a Boone. He says that people here don't like Chapelwaite. He thinks Charles should sell the mill, take what he can, and move.

The family has a reputation as strange, unpredictable men. Not good people. He says Charles will not find friends in Preacher's Corners. They practically threw a parade when Stephen hanged himself.

Rebecca is following the children. Tane goes into an alley to get a ball. A girl emerges from the backyard, asking if he killed her bunny. She's the sick girl.

Charles is trying to feed the horse, but it's spooked. Hay comes out of the barn door above, freaking out Charles, too.

Rebecca Morgan comes to the house to inquire about being a governess. She's pleased that the children have read literature and learned math from their mother.

Honor didn't know that women could go to college. Rebecca went to Mount Holyoke.

She makes a deal with them. She'll teach them what she learned in college if they teach her about their culture and the wonders they've seen.

The children have arrived at a decision. Tane doesn't think Loa wants her, but Honor and Tane do. Loa refrains from a vote either way.

Rebecca is thrilled. She'll return in the morning with her things. Charles says that his children will need more help on land than they think.

The whippoorwills come out as Charles wonders if he should walk Rebecca home. She's good.

When Charles goes into the house and turns off the lights, he hears the scratching in the walls again, walking with him as he visits each lamp.

Able Stewart has been keeping the ledgers. Charles appreciates his efforts.

Daniel Thompson, though, Charles doesn't appreciate. The ledgers show that production has decreased 60%, and the men gave themselves an increase that Abel didn't take. Charles offers severance to Daniel. Charles has plans for the mill, and he intends for it to work. He's not giving orders; he's offering choices.

He changes the way wages are given to the workers. He splits the lay 100 ways. The foreman gets three, and the workers get two. Able gets one for his job and two for keeping the ledgers. Charles gets 30.

Rebecca wants to help the kids make costumes for All Hallow's Eve. You go door to door and get treats and food. There are also games using a mirror to see your future husband and a pendulum to see spirits. She has one and uses it with the kids.

They're all scared when Honor sneaks up on them. A draft takes out the candle, and when Rebecca closes the window, a whippoorwill smashes into it, breaking its neck. But then the basement door opens, and they hear clattering. Rebecca calls for Mr. Fletcher and locks the door.

She's concerned, though.

Rebecca writes about ghosts in her book. There is a knock at her door. It's Charles. He's like to speak with her privately.

Charles hopes that she won't tell any more ghost stories. She admits her efforts to share a little seasonal fun were misguided.

Rebecca thinks they should go to church the next day, not because she believes or approves, but because it's small-town main and fitting in is paramount.

They meet at the door with a Burrows woman. Her father, Samuel Gallup, wants to speak with him. They want them to leave. Samuel is contrary and rude. Rebecca is embarrassed.

Rebecca says that the town blames Chapelwaite for the illness in town. Two stable hands were the first to get ill, and in the last two years, five others were in the graveyard.

Loa is alone, and Charles thinks it might be since he pulled her from the church. He also admits that their mother might not have died if she'd remained on the island, but she demanded that they stay a family, which meant sailing with Charles.

Charles says Loa cannot stay silent forever. They all miss mom. She launches herself into his arms. He's hiding something inside, and it scares her.

Another annoying town member is whining about the Boones. Daniel shoves a lighter at him. Burn it then, he says.

The nearby kid takes the lighter and gathers large jugs of lamp oil. He's Susan's father. Susan seems not ill but possessed.

Rebecca writes that she could leave, and nobody would care. But she answers to herself and hidden within the timbers of this dark manor lies the truth. She can feel it. Fear gathers, and ignorance spreads from home to home like the illness.,P> She's in the basement when Susan's father is riding up toward the mansion. A man is on the road. He kills the horse and slices the man's throat into a bucket before setting him on fire.

Rebecca wants to know what drove the family to madness, suicide, death. To know, she must know the mystery of Charles Boone.

Charles, who is taking a bath, goes underwater. When he pulls himself out, the water looks like worm-riddled dirt. He shakes himself out of it after hearing a voice… he is coming.
