Chance will not be returning for a third season at Hulu.

The Hugh Laurie-fronted drama series has been canceled after just two seasons.

Fury - Chance Season 2 Episode 10
(Hulu)

The news is especially surprising when you consider the fact that it sparked a bidding war amongst the networks. This was likely down to the appeal of Laurie, who appeared on the award-winning drama series House between 2004 and 2012.

Still, the show was poised to be a hit for Hulu, and while critics seemed to love it, it's unclear how it was performing in terms of viewers.

Like many streaming destinations, Hulu does not provide details that include the number of people watching its shows, so it's difficult to judge whether the shows will become hits or misses.

Unlike The Handmaid's Tale and Marvel's Runways, Chance is one of the shows that had minimal buzz, and that should have been confirmation alone that its days were numbered.

When Chance was ordered to series, it was with a two-season order, and that order was completed when the series finale became available to stream on November 29, 2017.

The series found Laurie playing a forensic neuropsychiatrist who is dragged kicking and screaming into a life that included police corruption, manipulation and corruption.

Given how late in the game the cancelation has been announced, it means there will be no wrap-up for the characters.

What did you think of the series?

On Chance Season 2 Episode 10, everyone was on the move — running from their demons or chasing them down. With this season finale, Chance's future and the whole scope of the show took a turn for the brighter.

Attempted Escape - Chance Season 2 Episode 10
(Hulu)

After jumping bail and fleeing to Mexico, for all intents and purposes, Chance was in the clear. But we all know that he can never quite leave things alone…

That's why I wasn't in the least bit shocked when Chance practically begged D to sneak back over the border into California and go after Frank.

D [to Chance]: You can’t fix every fucked-up thing you see, Doc.

🔗 permalink: You can’t fix every fucked-up thing you see, Doc.

It's fascinating that Chance can express regret for the assaults that he committed, but at the same time want to put himself in danger in an attempt to kill Frank — a point that D is all too quick to point out.

What I truly love about D's character is how he responded to this internal battle in Chance — he tried to talk some sense into him, and when that failed, he backed him one hundred percent. He wasn't willing to let his friend walk into the lion's den alone, and that's admirable.

Across the Border - Chance Season 2 Episode 10
(Hulu)

The revelation of Frank's new apprentice was anticlimactic. Rather than a character we know who could have great shock value, we're treated to a smarmy ex-con who lacked even an ounce of the sophistication of Frank or Winter.

Unsurprisingly, it took two minutes facing D and the Doc in a walk-in freezer to give up his new boss.

D: How do I say, “Give me a pound, big dawg,” in Spanish?

🔗 permalink: How do I say, “Give me a pound, big dawg,” in Spanish?

Although out of character, I thought it was a nice touch when D accidentally spooked Frank during his attempted murder of a prostitute.

D's usually in tip top shape when he's "on the job" but since he was still recovering from the stabbing, he made a mistake. It's good to point out that even the most savvy of men can have a bad day.

I was petrified for Christina when Frank took it upon himself to go visit her — almost certain that he would kill her. What a perfect way to fulfill his dark desire and get back at the man who's out to get him.

Confession - Chance Season 2 Episode 10
(Hulu)

On the contrary, Frank just asked a lot of friendly questions about Chance and gave some startlingly mature relationship advice to Christina.

The wisdom and emotional stability that Frank was presenting to her highlighted how much of a sociopath he really was. How can someone so purely evil make themselves sound so normal? It gave me the creeps.

Full of cunning, Frank didn't give up until the very end. I knew something was up when he was so willing to play ball with Chance and D when they demanded he confess on video — and Chance knew it too.

Fury - Chance Season 2 Episode 10
(Hulu)

After several more women that Frank and Winter attacked over the years were revealed, the fury in Chance's face was easy to read. But he wasn't willing to accept the manipulated version of events that Frank was trying to play off.

Chance: I wanted to do this right. But you didn’t confess.

Frank: I’ve been confessing for the last 20 minutes.

Chance: No, no, no, no. You didn’t confess to murder. You confessed to watching. You confessed to being an accessory after the fact. As you know, any half-decent professional could tell from your body language that there’s other people in the room. Which makes this whole thing open to accusations of coercion… duress, threat of violence.

Frank: Listen, you have got so much on that goddamn tape. You’ve got enough to get the ball rolling, okay?

Chance. Yeah, yeah, yeah. There’s enough. There’s enough for you to be able to say that you were joking or that you were drunk. The whiskey was a nice touch. Or you were high, you were pranking. The names of those women you gave us — I don’t know — maybe they weren’t your victims. Maybe they’re not even dead. Maybe they don’t even exist. You gave us enough for you to game your way out again.

🔗 permalink: Listen, you have got so much on that goddamn tape. You’ve got enough to get the ball rolling,…

Chance wanted to do things "the right way" by forcing Frank to face what he did in a court of law and to get vengeance for Hynes, but that clearly wasn't going to work.

The irony of the way Chance chose to take Frank out was not lost on me: the same chokehold move he pulled during that first attack on Winter, but with a hold long enough to end his life. One more monster in the ground.

Unfinished Business - Chance
(Hulu)

The slight time jump that occurred after that moment was a bit of a surprise and it took me a few minutes to catch up.

Suddenly, the darkness, the drama, the noir tone of that this show has encapsulated since the beginning was replaced with sunlight and optimism. It was jarring.

The Future - Chance Season 2 Episode 10
(Hulu)

After so much violence and pain it was heartwarming to see D and Lorena plan their future together, and witness Chance finally fulfill his desire to help people at the clinic.

Unexpected Love - Chance Season 2 Episode 10
(Hulu)

Lorena: You know what I was thinking the other day? That, um… the baby is gonna call you “D,” also, you know? But “D” for “Daddy.”

D: Awesome.

🔗 permalink: D for Daddy

Everyone's stories were wrapped up so neatly, that it was almost unbelievable.

Chance: Thank you.

Christina: For what? I came for the Percodan at a 60% discount.

🔗 permalink: For what? I came for the Percodan at a 60% discount.

D got the money to pay off Carl's debts and start his life with Lorena, Lorena finally freed from Hector, Christina let her anger toward Chance go, Nicole made a plan for her future and returned to her mom, and Chance rid the world of Winter and Frank and found a way to truly help people.

Forgiveness - Chance Season 2 Episode 10
(Hulu)

Christina: Good luck, Eldon. Try not to get extradited.

Chance: It’s good to have goals.

🔗 permalink: It’s good to have goals.

This episode, and this season revolved around the idea, the practice, and the consequences of running away. These characters ran literally back and forth across borders, ran from the law, ran from their consciences, ran with vengeance at heart…

And eventually they all came full circle.

Christina [to Chance]: I really want you to be okay. I really want us all to be okay. I really want to choose to believe that we can.

🔗 permalink: I really want you to be okay. I really want us all to be okay. I really want to choose to…

It's kind of amazing that the show was able to pull off so much happiness in the last few minutes of the finale and not make viewers want to puke. In fact, I found this episode delightful and hilarious, even in its darkest moments, and I still wanted more.

There was so much humor in this hour and the witty one-liners had me actually laughing out loud. D, in particular, has become so much more outgoing than he was even at the beginning of the season. The more his personality shines through, the more I love his big bald self.

Grande - Chance Season 2 Episode 10
(Hulu)

Chance: First of all, what are you wearing? Secondly, you just told me that you weren’t going. And now, what, you’re gonna fly under the radar? What is that?

D: Lorena got it. It was the only thing in grande. And number two, I didn’t say I wasn’t going. I said I didn’t want to.

🔗 permalink: Lorena got it. It was the only thing in grande. And number two, I didn’t say I wasn’t going….

Season 2 of Chance ended on a much lighter note than the murderous cliffhanger of Season 1, and to be honest it feels more like a series end, wrapping up everyone's stories, than it does a season a finale.

Regardless, I do hope we see Chance return for a Season 3 and I know in the meantime I'll be pondering what new mystery or monster they might choose to run after next.

Were you happy that Chance killed Frank? How did you feel about the ending? What are you hoping for in Season 3? Comment your thoughts below!

On Chance Season 2 Episode 9 D shows his sentimental side, Chance battles his conscience, and and Frank drops a bomb. Read on to find out what happened!

On Chance Season 2 Episode 9 Chance comes clean about his crimes with interesting results, Nicole ponders her next move, and D goes all out to protect Lorena.

After being taken into custody, Chance decides to plead guilty to the assault and own up to the decisions that he's made — a move almost the antithesis of everything he has done so far.

Changing Course - Chance
(Hulu)

When explaining this decision to D, Chance talked about the lack of regret he had for his actions, but how he still felt okay about taking responsibility for what he did. This is possibly most self-aware and mature I've seen Chance act in the two-season run of this show.

D, never one to back down to the long arm of the law, of course, thought this move is pretty stupid and even tries to guilt Chance into running away by mentioning how jail time will separate him from Nicole.

Chance: Honestly, I don’t regret it. I don’t regret what I’ve done or what I’ve asked you to do on my behalf. I’m guilty of it. I’m going to take responsibility for it. That’s probably the best thing I can do for Nicole right now.

D: Pretty stupid, getting locked up and leaving her over a fuckin’ moral abstraction.

Chance: Is it? An abstraction, I mean. Because it feels real to me. I felt guilty because I wasn’t able to do more. So, I did more. And I reinforced the cycle of fallout that we’re all trapped in because I wanted to have control. But I didn’t have control because no one has control.

D: So, why you did it doesn’t matter? All intents and purposes, you and Matty Willis are the same? And Wade Pardo and Lambert? Because you’re not.

Chance: Everyone’s got to take responsibility for what we’re doing, for what we’ve done to each other. I can’t ask of other people something that I won’t ask of myself.

🔗 permalink: Everyone’s got to take responsibility for what we’re doing, for what we’ve done to each…

This strategy didn't make that much sense to me because if Chance was caught skipping bail, he'd be given more time and would be away from his daughter longer, he didn't even know where Nicole was at this point, and she wasn't very eager to speak to him either.

Yes, Chance believed that taking ownership of his behavior would set the best example for Nicole and that I could understand. For a moment it seemed that Chance's fall might be the one thing that could set Nicole on the right path.

Two Peas - Chance Season 2 Episode 9
(Hulu)

She, of course, wanted to stay at the runaway teenage hangout — which looked pretty cool, if a little grimy.

Christina: We don’t know where [Nicole] is. And you just got out of jail?

Chance: Well, I think maybe I understand what she might be thinking right now.

Christina: Right, no, you understand. You keep telling her that the dangerous, furious way that she’s acting is — it’s natural. It’s chemical, it’s not even her fault, because… she’s exactly like you.

🔗 permalink: Right, no, you understand. You keep telling her that the dangerous, furious way that she’s…

Rather than sending her back to her mother, Chance left Nicole in Lucy's care which was a surprisingly smart idea. I hope that these two strong young women might be able to help each other work through the crap that they've gone through over the course of Chance Season 2.

Lucy Posts Bail - Chance Season 2 Episode 9
(Hulu)

It's clear how much Lucy cares for Chance and the loyalty she has for him — especially when she went as far as to post his $8,000 bail. You don't spend your entire savings to help someone out unless you feel like you owe them something.

We also FINALLY got a bit of an explanation regarding that random painting that Chance bought with Nicole back on Chance Season 1 Episode 2. Gifting it to Lucy to repay his bail was a sweet gesture.

Chance: Besides the occasional lapse in judgement, I think you could really help people. You deserve that. I think you should go back to school, you should get your degree and get out there, and you can be for patients what you’ve always been for me.

Lucy: Yeah, okay, I will.

Chance: Good.

Lucy: And I want you to figure out how to be in the world in a way that doesn’t hurt you. You deserve that.

🔗 permalink: And I want you to figure out how to be in the world in a way that doesn’t hurt you. You…

D covered a lot of territory throughout this hour, taking out gang members from San Fran all the way to Tijuana, Mexico, and all in the name of love.

D's Beat - Chance Season 2 Episode 9
(Hulu)

I find it incredibly sweet how much D cares for Lorena and is willing to put himself at risk again and again to protect her.

As one of the most complex and interesting characters I've seen on screen, D's probably the only person that could stab a bunch of guys with number 2 pencils and then profess his love with a romantic gesture and be believable in both scenes.

Lorena: This is crazy, you and me, whatever. I don’t even know what this is. It feels like a story or something, it’s not even real.

D: It’s as real as it gets.

🔗 permalink: It’s as real as it gets.

It's clear that Lorena's care for D is reciprocated, particularly when she agreed to try to take Hector out despite the danger of the gang. D trusted her enough to sacrifice himself to Cesar in her place, and to tell her his real name — a very personal and painful thing for him to do.

D: My name is Darius Pringle.

Lorena: Apology accepted.

🔗 permalink: Apology accepted.

D's Heart - Chance Season 2 Episode 9
(Hulu)

Chance certainly cares for D as well, skipping bail to go to Mexico and see D after he was badly wounded killing Hector. But he also had ulterior motives…

At first, I was pretty pissed to see Chance go on the run after everything he touted to both D and Nicole about taking responsibility and doing the right thing. It was incredibly hypocritical and reminded me how everything with this guy had been one step forward and two steps back.

Chance Pleads Guilty Season 2 Episode 9
(Hulu)

He did, however, have an explanation: Frank Lambert. Chance managed to get Sid on his side regarding Frank's involvement in the Winter murders and the even had his DNA to prove it.

Frank's a smart guy, though, and he was able to talk himself out of being arrested and confronted Chance directly about throwing him under the bus.

Frank's Contingency Plan - Chance Season 2 Episode 9
(Hulu)

It was a shock to me when Frank insisted that he had a backup accomplice now that Winter was out of the picture, and it clearly shook Chance to his core — enough to give up on "doing the right thing" once and for all.

It seems that Chance fled because he discovered that Frank is going to continue killing, and I'm sure he'll want to take him down. Easier done from Mexico than a state penitentiary, I'm guessing.

A New Target - Chance Season 2 Episode 9
(Hulu)

To me, Frank declaring he's not going to stop killing just reiterates that there will always be another monster that needs to be taken care of. And Chance's belief that he is the man to do it proves that he still hasn't learned anything from the mess he's created around him.

Frank: When something feels that good, does a person ever just do it once?

Chance: No. Especially if it’s part of a shared psychosis.

Frank: I’m sorry. What’d you call me?

Chance: Folie a deux. Madness of two people. One individual is psychotic, is dominant. The other one is suggestible, susceptible. They’re both operating under the same delusion. Winter’s madness drove him, but you exploited it, you captialized on his trauma for your own purposes. He wanted to get out of it, but you made sure that he wouldn’t. Couldn’t. All the way to the end.

Frank: Why would I do that? Hmm? Why would I do any of that?

Chance: Because you wanted to. Because you like it. Because you’re entire neural network is conditioned to that now. When you were entrenched with Winter, your reactions, sexual and psychological, were all responses to power and terror. Now he’s gone. So you’re alone with you desires, your responses. You’re going to be staring down the barrel of the rest of your life without anyone to help you achieve them. What a thing it is, in life, to find even one person who understands your darkest heart, let alone two.

Frank: You’re right. He is gone, but I’m not alone. I wouldn’t do that to myself. Come on, Doc. You think I don’t know how to plan for contingencies? You know, if there’s one thing that I’ve learned from my job, it’s how to prepare. It’s how to play the long game, right? He is gone, but I’m not alone.

🔗 permalink: You’re right. He is gone, but I’m not alone. I wouldn’t do that to myself. Come on, Doc. You…

With only one episode left in the season, it seems like everyone is at a crossroads and there's no good prediction for where it might go next.

Who do you think Frank's new accomplice might be? Should Chance have gone on the run? Is Lorena safe? Comment your thoughts below!

On Chance Season 2 Episode 8 motivations are exposed, actions defended, and justice sought.

Everyone's standing their ground and no one is winning.

After Winter's bombshell confession, Frank found a way to manipulate the situation to his benefit. Instead of steering clear of the whole case, he immersed himself in it — convincing his boss to choose him as the prosecutor.

Discovering New Information - Chance
(Hulu)

At first I was unsure if Frank's intentions were to help Winter or to put him down for good, but either way, he was sure to be covering his own ass.

Frank's ability to play multiple roles is uncanny, whether it be convincing his boss that he was a friend of Hynes, "helping" Chance try to take Winter down, or sitting in a room with Winter and his lawyer acting as if he knows nothing.

It's seriously impressive, definitely creepy, and totally deserving of his own psychiatric care.

Frank Plays Roles - Chance Season 2 Episode 8
(Hulu)

The way that Chance discovered that Frank was Winter's accomplice by happening upon the old baseball photo of him and Stevie was a little on the nose for me, as was stealing the fork for the DNA test.

Frank seems too smart to leave an incriminating picture like that hanging around his office, and I highly doubt he would leave someone alone in there — especially Chance.

I thought when Chance finally had the big revelation that Frank was the guy it would have been a bit of a more significant moment than this scene allowed.

Even if Chance can prove that it's Frank's DNA under Stevie's fingernails, what exactly does he think he's going to do about it? He tried to take down Winter, and we can see how that has worked out. Chance seems to be all about jumping in with both feet and worrying about the fallout later.

Frank, as much as I dislike the guy, is incredibly smart. By faking Winter's suicide, he's managed to cover his own back, please the higher-ups, and in the public's eye take down a serial murderer. Even D had to admit it was a pretty decent plan.

Winter's End - Chance Season 2 Episode 8
(Hulu)

The moment that Winter got killed was somehow anticlimactic but still satisfying. That's the thing I love about this show — the big things happen suddenly and with no fanfare. Oh, the main villain of the season just drops dead in the middle of an episode? Oh, okay, cool.

The events that you think will make the whole season — Winter getting caught for his crimes, for example — turn out to be pretty minor by the time they come around. When Winter dies, we don't care as much because we already have other fish to fry — Frank.

Frank [to Winter]: I just want you to know, Mr. Winter, that you’re going to have to prove that at the time you committed all those murders, that you were laboring under such a defect of reason, from disease of the mind, as not to know the nature and quality of the act. Basically that you didn’t understand your actions any more than would an infant, a brute, or a wild beast.

🔗 permalink: I just want you to know, Mr. Winter, that you’re going to have to prove that at the time you…

There's no question who has the upper hand in this new battle between Chance and Frank. It seems that our well-intentioned Doctor is always one step behind. Lambert has ridden himself of his Winter problem and now with some unintentional help from Clayton has Chance in custody for assault.

When Clayton first distributed the picture of D to her team as the assault suspect, Chance understandably panicked.

D's response was much more nonchalant, but he made sure to ask Chance if he regretted their actions before he felt they were in danger. The answer was a definitive no. Now that he's been found out by the police I wonder if he'll be singing a different tune.

Clayton Confronts Chance Season 2 Episode 8
(Hulu)

I thoroughly appreciated the total overtness and badassery that Clayton displayed when she confronted Chance about the assaults.

Instead of beating around the bush or putting together a plan of attack like others might, she just called Chance out directly. She has no moral gray area. There's right, there's wrong, and she's not willing to compromise.

Chance: What about us? Who helps us when we sit in so much misery that it starts to leak out around the edges? Don’t tell me you haven’t felt the weight of that.

Clayton: Of course I do. That’s when I go somewhere and sit on a beach and thank my lucky fucking stars.

Chance: I’m not talking about burnout. I’m talking about a fundamental shift in psyche. There are no excuses, there’s only reasons. It’s only a threshold, after which I cannot sit and inhale my patients’ pain without doing something, without at least breathing it out. So yeah, I breathed it out. And in that breath was fire. And I liked it.

🔗 permalink: I’m not talking about burnout. I’m talking about a fundamental shift in psyche. There are no…

This scene proved Clayton to be a voice of reason and resonated with me as a viewer. With this show, it's easy to become immersed in the stories and motivations of these characters, but she reminds us of the reality of what's going on — a reminder that, hey, EVERYTHING THAT CHANCE HAS DONE IS TOTALLY BANANAS CRAZY.

Chance is Confronted by Police Season 2 Episode 8
(Hulu)

I was slightly surprised by how vigorously Chance defended himself to Clayton. I expected him to be overcome with remorse and not vehemently try to justify his actions to the woman whose whole career he's put in jeopardy. It wasn't his most shining moment.

There were undoubtedly parallels to be drawn between Clayton firing Chance and when Chance was forced to close down his practice last season. Then he was two steps away from committing murder, and now he's being questioned by police about an assault.

Chance Visits Winter Season 2 Episode 8
(Hulu)

Chance puts his whole life on the line for these crazy people and repeatedly loses everything that's important to him. And for what? There are just going to be more psychos out there.

He'd be helping far more people if he just stuck to his actual job than he ever could by ridding the world of Blackstone and Winter.

Winter [to Chance]: I just wanted to believe that someone wanted to save me, that you wanted to, more than I wanted to know you were lying. And I was right to do that, because you… you did save me. You hurt me to save me, and now here we are.

🔗 permalink: I just wanted to believe that someone wanted to save me, that you wanted to, more than I…

Chance wasn't the only person to defend their questionable actions this episode.

Christine attempted to explain her reasoning behind sending Nicole off to Clearview. It's obvious she's trying to do what's best for her daughter, but it doesn't mean that the way she goes about it isn't a little off the mark.

Shipping her kid off to a nature therapy program isn't as bad as some of the things other characters have done, but doing it behind Chance's back and without his permission wasn't the best move.

Nicole Adjusts to Nature - Chance Season 2 Episode 8

After arriving at Clearview, Nicole holds her ground as well. When questioned by counselor Bruce, she defends her reasons behind assaulting Pepper, claiming that she needed to "make things right."

The desire to achieve justice through violence is eerily similar to the tactic used Chance and D used with their victims as well.

Nicole: There was this girl. I thought she was my friend. And I found out she was spreading shit about me all over the internet, so I broke her nose with a book. I’m not sorry. And I don’t like this game. Or this place. I’m a straight-A student, not a drug addict. But I would do what put me here again in a hot minute.

Bruce: Okay, so you believe the punishment fit her crime? Your former friend?

Nicole: Yep.

Bruce: So, violence was the answer? Is the answer?

Nicole: Well, if it means making things right…

Bruce: Making things right. What does that mean to you, making things right? Does that mean she should apologize? Take everything back, promise she’ll never do it again? So, is that what happened after you broke her nose? Did she make things right?

Nicole: Well, you tell me what you think I should have done then. Just eat it? What about what she did?

Bruce: What about it? This is not the last time something like this is going to happen to you or to any of us. Terrible, painful, unjust shit will happen again and again and again. And the only part of any of it that you’ll ever be able to control is how you react. You’d do what you did again in a hot minute, that’s what you said. But you said it to me here, in this place. And that girl, whatever her name is? She’s at home, eating hot food and sleeping in a bed. You’re here.

🔗 permalink: What about it? This is not the last time something like this is going to happen to you or to…

Although I did feel awful for Nicole being sent here, at first, the lecture she got from Bruce made a lot of sense. Nicole isn't always going to be able to control the bad things that happen to her — only her response to them.

It was a lesson that Nicole needed to learn, and it seemed like she was making progress when she made her apology to Bruce. I felt hopeful for her — but then she took off. So, no, not quite there yet.

I'm torn between my love of Nicole and how she's learned to stick to her guns no matter what, and wanting her to see the bigger picture. There's no telling where she's going to end up next.

D also made some shady moves this hour — it's not that he hasn't always done morally ambiguous things before, but usually, he goes after everything he does with gusto. In this situation with Lorena, D was determined but not as confident as usual.

D the Protector - Chance Season 2 Episode 8
(Hulu)

Going after a gang leader to protect Lorena from her baby daddy isn't the smartest move, and even she warned him: Don't get yourself mixed up in a war that you can't win. Better just to stay out of the line of fire.

D: I can take care of Hector.

Lorena: I know that you think that you can. But even if you did, it doesn’t work like that.

D: I don’t care how it works.

Lorena: Loz Cazadores, they make people pay, okay? But they pay, too. There’s always somebody getting paid. Here or there or — it doesn’t matter, and you can’t change it. You can’t stop it, so you better not get in the way of it. Not by killing Hector. Not at all. You’re a good man. But I’ll be okay, okay? Just have to hide again. This time long enough for Hector to get tired.

D: I know you think so, but even if you could, that’s not how it works.

🔗 permalink: I know you think so, but even if you could, that’s not how it works.

I always thought D and Lorena might end up together (I still have hope!) but it seems more likely that D's willing to die for her instead.

Lorena Warns D - Chance Season 2 Episode 8
(Hulu)

At the end of the day it seems that despite any amount of risk, warning signs, or confrontation, everyone is just going to do what they're going to do and damn the consequences.

How do you think Chance is going to handle the police questioning? is D going to be okay? And where the hell does Nicole think she's going? Comment your thoughts below!

The drama reaches a boiling point on Chance Season 2 Episode 7. Read on to find out who couldn't stand the heat!

The post Chance Season 2 Episode 7 Review: Define Normal appeared first on TV Fanatic.

]]>
On Chance Season 2 Episode 7 many pressing questions from the season are answered in what may be the most exciting hour of the show so far.

Laying a Trap - Chance
(Hulu)

Unfortunately the two bullets that Frank planted in Hynes at the end of Chance Season 2 Episode 6 did take him out. It says a lot that Hynes death is only a blip on the radar of revelations this hour.

In a series of flashbacks viewers learn just how involved Frank has been in Winter's life of killing. As it turns out: very.

All the way back to their teenage years shoving rocks down Stevie's throat, it seems that Frank's mastermind and Winter's bloodlust mesh together to create the perfect murderous duo.

Frank the Brains - Chance Season 2 Episode 7
(Hulu)

I wasn't shocked to find out Frank was a little dirty, but I never could have predicted that he was just as dark and twisted as Winter.

It almost made me feel a little bit bad for young Matty Webb — a clearly disturbed kid who had been traumatized by his mother and embraced violence with Frank's encouragement instead of getting the psychiatric treatment he desperately needed.

Winter: Those that are good must suffer the same as those who are bad. He has to suffer. Like I have.

🔗 permalink: Those that are good must suffer the same as those who are bad. He has to suffer. Like I have.

Frank's knowledge of the law and ability to spin a story seems to be what's been keeping Winter from getting caught all of these years. He certainly feels a sense of superiority over Winter, telling him what he can and can't do, and manipulating every situation for his own benefit.

Although, Winter isn't totally afraid to break the rules that Frank puts in place…

Winter Apologizes - Chance Season 2 Episode 7
(Hulu)

All of the blame can't be taken off of Winter, of course. He's still responsible for countless murders, and does't seemed bothered by adding Lyndsay to the list.

As convincing as Winter's trust in Chance is, he still goes as far as to apologize for killing Hynes — the one murder he didn't commit. There's certainly still an element of strategy to everything that Winter does.

When Frank reveals to Winter how closely Chance and Hynes were working together to bring him down, Ryan commits to making Chance suffer just as he has.

Lucy: [Chance] is a good person. He’s fucking crazy, but he’s always been there for me. Maybe not exactly when I though he should be, I guess. But times that it turned out to actually matter, looking back. Before I left to have Willow, I never saw it. But going away and being back now, I can’t believe that I didn’t. The burnout. The weight on him. How he hears and sees what he hears and sees everyday, and then he has to just go back to living in the world. I don’t want to give him anything else bad to think about. I don’t want to weigh on him. I won’t.

🔗 permalink: [Chance] is a good person. He’s fucking crazy, but he’s always been there for me. Maybe not…

It seems his strategy for doing so is to go after Lucy — although I'm convinced he was already targeting her anyway. In fact, I was sure that Winter was going to kill Lucy when he attacked her with the knife. She's such a beloved character, but after Hynes' abrupt death, I wouldn't put it past the show.

Lucy's in Danger - Chance Season 2 Episode 7
(Hulu)

It was thrilling to see her escape from him. Although I'm sure it has something to do with having her baby with her, I still think Lucy is a pretty tough chick. It will be heartbreaking, but interesting, to see how she adjusts to being a victim so similar to the people she works with everyday.

Speaking of badass girls, Nicole gets a real taste of the dark side when she spends a night at a juvenile detention center. Even after getting beat up by a fellow inmate she holds her head high, and does self defense training with D even though she's terrified to go back to Juvie.

Nicole Visits Juvie - Chance Season 2 Episode 7
(Hulu)

Dr. Clayton's defense of Nicole in court was sweet and unexpected. Although I think it would have been an cool twist to see Nicole serve time, but the conflict between her and her mother escalated enough fill the drama quota.

Christina: I feel like we don’t eat as well as we should. Maybe. I don’t know. Feel like if we put good stuff in, we’d feel better.

Nicole: No, for sure. If I ate more organic food, no way I would have assaulted Pepper.

🔗 permalink: No, for sure. If I ate more organic food, no way I would have assaulted Pepper.

At first I totally understood Christina's fury at Chance for not telling her about his past. Her entire marriage was basically a lie — that's frightening. I also can accept her desire to put distance between Nicole and her father because of his negative influence.

However, it seemed extremely over-the-top to send Nicole off to wherever she's going with whoever it was that dragged her out of bed in the middle of the night.

Chance Confesses to Christina Season 2 Episode 7
(Hulu)

Sure, Christina is terrified for the path that her daughter has been headed down, but to go as far as bringing strangers into her home to tie her daughter up and take away as she screams and pleads for help is cold. And it was tragic to watch.

Dr. Clayton saw enough good in Nicole to save her from going to jail — how does Christina think that wherever's she's sent her now will be better?

D: Perception is reality. And perception is formed right off the bat. You have to figure out who to impress and who to knock off.

N. How?

D: By paying attention. Who are people afraid of? Who’s the enforcer? Who’s sitting together at meals? And if you’re ever in doubt about if somebody wants to hurt you, hurt them first.

🔗 permalink: By paying attention. Who are people afraid of? Who’s the enforcer? Who’s sitting together at…

Not only did she have time to show up for Nicole, but Dr. C has also been busy digging into the attacks on the people related to her patients.

In fact, one of them has aided a sketch artist in forming a portrait of D and relayed to Kirsten that the person who attacked him knew specific information about his background that was confidential to the office.

Clayton is a smart cookie and she's sure to put two and two together. Chance and D's hit list from earlier this season has definitely taken a backseat, but if Clayton confronts Chance about this in any serious way it could have catastrophic repercussions for him.

But it's not Chance that should be the most worried about being caught for his crimes — it's Frank.

Killers Plot - Chance Season 2 Episode 7
(Hulu)

At the end of "Define Normal" a bomb was dropped on viewers that after his failed attack on Lucy, Winter has officially gone to the police and confessed to all of the murders he's committed.

This is an exciting turn of events as Chance and D might finally get to see Hynes' wish through and put Winter behind bars for good. The new question is will they be able to figure out that Frank is involved, or will his anger at Winter give him away?

Frank Scolds Winter - Chance Season 2 Episode 7
(Hulu)

I think I enjoyed this episode so greatly because it did give us answers we were looking for but still left us with plenty of cliffhangers.

Where was Nicole shipped off to? What will happen to Frank now that Winter has confessed? Is Clayton gonna nail Chance? And where the heck is Lorena??? Comment your predictions below!

On Chance Season 2 Episode 6 Chance pushes Winter to the point of no return, D ties up loose ends with his past, and Nicole's crimes catch up with her. Everyone is on their toes, and no one is backing down.

Winter finally shares the details of his crimes with Chance, admitting to killing several people and providing the name of one of his victims.

Progress Interrupted - Chance
(Hulu/Ali Goldstein)

Chance and Winter both know that this coping mechanism is no longer working, but where do they go from here? Chance tells Winter he intends to help him, tells Hynes he intends to prosecute and tells viewers absolutely nothing about his true intentions.

With Winter's confession, it became clear that his defenses had officially broken and he trusted Chance fully. There is no other way he would admit to his crimes and show Chance his vulnerability if he wasn't confident in his the doctor's ability to help him.

The only thing standing in Chance's way of finally getting proof of Winter's murders is Lyndsay.

Winter's assistant didn't get any less creepy this episode, nor did she reveal how big her piece of the puzzle is. She threatens to press charges against both Hynes and Chance if they don't leave Winter alone.

Lyndsay Threatens - Chance Season 2 Episode 6
(Hulu)

Her loyalty and defense of Winter is still a mystery, but Hynes suggests that she's not in the dark about the kind of person Winter is and what he's done.

Chance and D find a way around Lyndsay and casually kidnap Winter. Chance encourages Winter to turn himself into the police, claiming that he can help him get the psychiatric help that he needs.

It is in this scene that viewers are treated to one of the very few mentions of Jaclyn Blackstone this season.

Winter: I asked you once how someone could consent to let you in their head without knowing what you find there. But I knew what you would find.

Chance: Yeah, you did. But you said yes anyway. You trusted me to bring you to this moment. Nothing worthwhile is ever done through thinking alone. At some point, you have to act.

🔗 permalink: Yeah, you did. But you said yes anyway. You trusted me to bring you to this moment. Nothing…

Chance compares Jaclyn to Winter in both their violent tendencies and abusive pasts. Chance claims that he also helped Jaclyn turn herself in, testified on her behalf in court, and now she resides in a psychiatric hospital getting treatment.

This news took me by surprise. Is this story true? Or did Jaclyn just disappear after Raymond was killed? Why are we only hearing about this now? I assume that Chance just used her story as a strategy to get Winter to confess to his crimes. How could what happened between Chance and Jaclyn have ended so cleanly?

Winter Admits Defeat - Chance Season 2 Episode 6
(Hulu)

After a bit of reluctance Winter seemed to fall victim to Chance's suggestions and claimed that he was going to turn himself in. This admission of defeat and the trust he showed in Chance convinced me even more that Winter had dropped his psychotic games and realized his sickness.

Boy, was I wrong.

Chance: How do you choose? Your victims?

Winter: Sins choose us… according to our weaknesses. But there are people who shine with vulnerability, whether they know it or not. Their faces say “I am afraid of you.” Their faces tell you what they expect you to do to them. They expect to be hurt. They invite it, because they expect it. And if I chose anything, it was because their weakness spoke to mine.

🔗 permalink: Sins choose us… according to our weaknesses. But there are people who shine with…

Hynes enlisted his friend Frank Lambert to help take down Winter. He asked him to look into the death of Katherine and Lyndsay's past. Frank tells Hynes that Winter has agreed to confess after his chat with Chance, but unbeknownst to him, Hynes is being played for a fool.

Frank is Dirty - Chance Season 2 Episode 6
(Hulu)

After heading to Winter's place Hynes finds out that Frank has been dirty all along and that he and Winter had lured him there.

In a dramatic cliffhanger, the episode concluded with Frank shooting Hynes.

I won't say without a shadow of a doubt that Hynes is dead, but after taking two to the chest, a full recovery doesn't seem likely.

D: Fear stops when you kill the thing you’re afraid of. Or it kills you.

🔗 permalink: Fear stops when you kill the thing you’re afraid of. Or it kills you.

Hynes' character was growing on me, and I'll be disappointed if he was killed off. After destroying his life in order to take down Winter, Hynes is the underdog that we're all rooting for. I wanted nothing more than to watch him get his vengeance this season buy finally being able to put Winter away.

Hynes is Fooled - Chance Season 2 Episode 6
(Hulu)

Although, I'm sure that Hynes' death would only intensify everyone else's determination to take Ryan down — especially Chance.

The Winter case wasn't the only battle these characters were fighting this episode, however. On Chance Season 2 Episode 5 D had finally confronted his father about following him.

Rather than killing his dad like we might have thought, D gave a rather articulate plea for his father to leave him alone. It wasn't a conversation that ended with a stab to the chest, but a handshake instead.

D Prepares to Fight - Chance Season 2 Episode 6
(Hulu)

D's tragic relationship with his father has obviously had an enormous impact on D's life. He says "I am who I am because of you," and I'm sure this influenced his decision to help Carl reunite with his own family.

Easily my favorite part of this hour was Nicole's scenes. After witnessing a couple steal a dog from a homeless man, Nicole becomes a sort of vigilante not unlike her father. Instead of letting the encounter go or trying to solve the problem another way, she turns to crime.

Nicole the Martyr - Chance Season 2 Episode 6
(Hulu)

Nicole breaks into the home of the couple, takes the dog, keys their car on her way out, and then returns the little fella to his homeless owner. It's not that Nicole doesn't care, it's that she cares to a fault. She wants justice at any cost. But being a martyr doesn't protect you from the law.

This lesson becomes clear to Nicole toward the end of the episode when she is arrested for assaulting Pepper.

Carl: You know, you may not be a married man with a child, but still. People are going to look at you differently, and that’s fine. If you are strong in yourself. And, Kevin, I see that you are. You are strong. You are ready. Your are a treasure in a jar of clay.

Hynes: Yeah?

Carl: Yes, indeed. Pressed on all sides, but not crushed. Perplexed, but not in despair. Persecuted, but never forsaken. Struck down, but never destroyed.

🔗 permalink: Yes, indeed. Pressed on all sides, but not crushed. Perplexed, but not in despair….

Dr. Clayton looks for her own kind of justice, by investigating Wade Pardo. She reveals to Chance that she know's Pardo was beaten up shortly after punching Chance. In turn, Chance brings up other victim's assailants who have turned up with a less than stellar bill of health.

Clayton Confronts Chance Season 2 Episode 6

This was a clever strategy on Chance's part: by being the one to bring attention to the other assaults, he has taken the spotlight off of he and D as the culprits, even though they are responsible. I'm glad that their hit list from the beginning of the season is still being addressed, despite the focus turning to Winter.

It seemed like every second of this hour found two characters going toe to toe. It's impossible to say who has come out on top when motives are still unclear and facts still hidden.

The most significant question we're left with is whether Ryan Winter is the ultimate con. If he really has been playing Chance this entire time, he has done an exceptionally great job. With Hynes out of the picture, it will be that much harder for Chance to catch Winter without getting more blood on his hands, if he can get him at all.

On Chance Season 2 Episode 5 routines are disrupted and any sense of normalcy eradicated.

Whether their instincts point to violence or justice, each character must find a way to cope with their new circumstances, while battling demons from their past.

Hynes' Investigates - Chance Season 2 Episode 5
(Hulu)

Winter seems to be the most unstable this hour, as the woman's throat he slit might suggest. This is the first time the audience has been privy to his explicit violence, and any shadow of his innocence is erased.

Obviously tormented by the truth of his past, Winter both summons Chance for help and pushes his advances away. After attacking the young mom he met, Winter admits to Chance that his coping mechanism hasn't been working, and admits that he's hurt people "so bad… that they died."

Talking in the Rain - Chance
(Hulu/Ali Goldstein)

This admission suggests that Winter is beginning to trust Chance to an extent, despite how calculated he seemed at the beginning of their relationship. He is a very clearly a sick man and may be reaching out to the only person willing to help him with his demons. Although, Chance's motives are less than straightforward.

Winter's new hobby of stalking Lucy is an interesting, although unsurprising, development.

Chance: I really appreciate this.

Lucy: Which I’m sure will be reflected in the gift you decide to give me.

A stunning directorial decision tricked audience's eye by briefly suggesting Winter may have murdered her. Although he attacked a different woman, it doesn't mean that our green-haired friend is out of the woods, especially since Winter's fascination with moms and Lucy's schedule only seems to be growing.

(Hulu)

Second to Winter, Detective Hynes seems to be struggling the most with his past indiscretions. He is obsessed with Winter, to the extent that he's almost destroyed his own life – twice.

Even after receiving the devastating news that Winter's DNA doesn't match that found under the fingernails of the young boy Stevie murdered years ago and got politely let go from his position as Detective, Hynes is still determined to find a way to "blow the case wide open."

Hynes' Obsession - Chance Season 2 Episode 5
(Hulu)

Hynes' determination would be borderline pathetic if we didn't know that he was right. Winter is exactly the killing demon that Hynes believes him to be. The question is whether there will be anything left of Hynes to take him down when the time comes.

Hynes: The truth is a lion, Doc. You don’t have to defend it. All’s you have to do is let it loose. It defends itself.

Chance: Wait, did you — did you just quote St. Augustine at me?

Hynes: Uh-huh. Who has two thumbs and hidden fucking depths?

D is also thrown into a new environment when he's forced to leave his home at the workshop. His father has hired a PI who has come snooping around Carl's place, and D invites himself to stay with Chance for a while.

Chance prods at D's recent lack-of-action, suggesting that his father is the feeder and D is the receiver, throwing D's metaphors back in his face.

Chance: “War consists of the constant interaction of opposites.” That’s von Clausewitz, isn’t it? It’s difficult to live your life that way. If not impossible.

D: Just ’cause I’m on your couch Doc, doesn’t mean I need my head shrunk.

Chance: You see, that’s what I’m wondering. Why the guy who’s always talking about dictating the action is on my couch right now. Eventually, you’re gonna have to stop running, you know. Even if only ’cause you lose both your feet to diabetes.

🔗 permalink: You see, that’s what I’m wondering. Why the guy who’s always talking about dictating the…

The big guy decides to confront the PI and confirms who is behind the investigation. We see D sneak into his family home and approach his dad with a knife. D isn't one to underestimate, and I wouldn't be surprised if his father isn't with us at the start of the next episode.

D Watches PI - Chance
(Hulu)

However, we did get to see a softer side of D when he had lunch with Lorena.

Not only did she gush about her baby – telling D that she is having a boy and showing him her sonogram picture – but she also brought him a comb from Winter for a sample of his DNA. Her nonchalance regarding her mom-killing boss and D's investigation is still astounding.

Chance himself is still battling his inner darkness. He works himself into a tizzy after not hearing from Winter and then comes very close to beating a guy that he almost hit with his car. Despite these violent urges, Chance manages to keep himself under control and seems to have it together the most out of any of these troubled men.

Chance Worries Season 2 Episode 5
(Hulu)

I'm glad the psyches of the other characters are explored more and more. Although Chance is a fascinating, the extent to which he was focused on last season was almost overkill.

The interaction between the characters now and the motivations behind their actions are the most exciting part of the new season for me.

Aside from Lucy's continued naivety regarding Winter, the women in this episode really had their shit together.

Clayton Plots - Chance Season 2 Episode 5
(Hulu)

Dr. Clayton is given security footage that shows Chance getting punched outside the hospital. Not one to sit on her hands, she questions Nicole about Chance's state of mind, asks a cop friend to look into the attacker, and confronted Chance about his secrecy. Talk about getting things done and staying on the right side of the line.

Nicole: [Dr. Clayton] was asking about you, about how you’re really doing since you got punched in the face by that guy.

Chance: What guy?

Nicole: The one who punched you. In the face, right? When you were trying to walk and read?

🔗 permalink: The one who punched you. In the face, right? When you were trying to walk and read?

Nicole's expulsion from school and her father's job give her the opportunity to work at a conference where patients from the unit will be telling their stories.

Nicole Listens - Chance Season 2 Episode 5
(Hulu)

The words of the victims seem to be hitting a soft spot for Nicole, who has been both victim and victimizer.

She implores D to teach her how to defend herself, and although he refuses out of respect for Chance, she does seem to be taking more control over her life. Self-defense is probably a better tactic than smashing people in the face with books.

Dr. Clayton: I’ve heard great things about you.

Nicole: Like that I broke somebody’s nose with the complete works of William Shakespeare?

🔗 permalink: Like that I broke somebody’s nose with the complete works of William Shakespeare?

The title of this episode – The Collected Works of William Shakespeare – as well as the literary references littered through the episode, and D and Hynes' bond over war trivia and weaponry, speaks to the history that's being wrestled with.

Everyone tries to find peace with their past: D and Winter through violence, Nicole and Hynes through acceptance.

Whose story will end in tragedy? I guess we'll have to keep watching to find out.
