Just one day after ABC dropped the bombshell that the next season of black-ish had been banished to midseason 2021, the network has changed course.

The hit comedy series starring Tracee Ellis Ross and Anthony Anderson will now return in the fall in the Wednesdays at 8:30 p.m. slot.

The series follows Dre Johnson (Anderson) and his wife Rainbow (Ross) as they work and raise their five children.

It also tackles social justice issues — like racism and police brutality — and is loosely based on Barris' own life and his marriage to his wife, Rainbow Barris.

Of the decision to bring Black-ish back, ABC Entertainment President Karey Burke admitted in a statement that after speaking with Barris and the network's "creative partners," they felt it is "important to tell these meaningful stories during this moment in time."

"Black-ish has a long-standing history of shining a light on current events and honoring black voices through the lens of the Johnson family," Burke said.

"After speaking with Kenya and our creative partners, we decided it was important to tell these meaningful stories during this moment in time, so we are adjusting our premiere schedule and are committed to doing whatever it takes to bring this series back as soon as we possibly can," Burke continued in her statement.

Junior and his parents - black-ish
(ABC/ERIC MCCANDLESS.)

"Following recent monumental events, it's imperative that the dialogue continues and empowers viewers to raise their voices. There is no other show that does that like Black-ish."

Barris reacted to the decision, explaining that he is "incredibly grateful to Karey, Dana [Walden] and Peter [Rice] for recognizing the importance of Black-ish in this moment and applaud them for making the necessary shifts to bring the show back as soon as possible."

"While the last few months have felt overwhelming at times, they have also underscored just how important it is that Black voices are not only heard but empowered and amplified as well; and our entire Black-ish team is humbled to be a small part of telling our stories and are excited to get back to these conversations," Barris added.

With the earlier than planned premiere date for black-ish Season 7, ABC has confirmed it is pushing new Kyra Sedgwick comedy series, Call Your Mother, to later in the season.

black-ish spinoff, mixed-ish, however, is staying on the bench and is expected to return in early 2021.

ABC announced earlier this week that it plans to air a business as usual fall schedule that would include more unscripted content.

The Bachelorette, which was originally tipped to launch in May before the Covid-19 outbreak, will now air Tuesdays in the fall.

(ABC)

In doing so, the Tuesday comedy block has officially been canned, with The Conners inheriting Modern Family's slot on Wednesdays.

ABC has yet to reveal when any of its shows will resume production.

For Black History Month, we're commemorating some of our favorite current TV couples who are the perfect representation of black love. Check out our list inside!

The post Current TV Couples Who Perfectly Represent Black Love! appeared first on TV Fanatic.

]]>
Black History Month has come to a close, and we wanted to commemorate some of the best couples who embody Black Love.

They are stable, loving, inspirational, and aspirational couples. They're free of some of the stigmas projected on black couples and many of the problematic elements too.

They are real, loving, beautiful depictions of black couples on television showing how important and amazing representation can be.

We've compiled a list of some of the best black couples currently (or recently) on the air. Check it out below!

Beth and Randall – This is Us

Make-Up After The Fight - This Is Us Season 2 Episode 16
(Ron Batzdorff/NBC)

Beth and Randall are the first couple that comes to mind when you broach the topic. This Is Us continues to be an incredible series that covers many topics and brings people of all shapes, colors, and journeys in life together. The Pearson family resonates with all of its viewers.

And Beth and Randall Pearson are all the goals. They're not a perfect couple. They have their ups and downs, but they balance each other out in a beautiful way. They always get through everything together. Through loss, mental illness, career changes, adoption, and familial plights, they're always by each other's side.

They showed how diverse the black experience is. Randall often had his fair share of identity issues growing up as the only black person in an all-white family, and Beth was the daughter of a Jamaican immigrant, but they found their way to each other.

And via their relationship, a plethora of cultural issues have been explored within the show, and they gave viewers a peek into what it's like in an everyday black relationship and family.

Gina and Rome – A Million Little Things

Keeping Secrets - Tall - A Million Little Things Season 2 Episode 7
(ABC/Jack Rowand)

The Howards are arguably the best and strongest couple on A Million Little Things. They're the couple the others look to and aspire to be. They're the definition of "Goals."

Even when they are at low points or have disagreements and conflicts, there is never any doubt that they'll get through it together. For Rome and Regina, being apart never seems to be an option.

Regina has supported Rome as he has battled depression. They've endured the loss of their friend and Rome's mother. Rome has been Gina's rock as she grappled with traumatic experiences from her past and strained familial relationships.

Communication is at the heart of their relationship, and it's what makes them excel as a couple. It's also gratifying that they're so comfortable within their friendship group, never shying away from sharing their cultural perspective and experiences.

Violet and Hollywood – Queen Sugar

Awaiting the Results - Queen Sugar Season 4 Episode 13
(Skip Bolen/WarnerBros. Ent./OWN)

Queen Sugar is masterful for many reasons. For one, the series gave us a May-December romance between Violet Bordelon and Hollywood, and they never made a mockery of it.

It's no secret there is an age difference between the two, but it's not something that defines them. Their love is so real and raw that it'll bring you to tears and inspire you.

They've faced challenges, from losing loved ones to trying to keep the family farm going and the family intact. Violet is fierce, lively, and passionate. She's a business owner and the family's matriarch. She's vivacious and sexy.

Hollywood treats her like a queen. They're each other's equals, and they have seen each other through their complicated pasts, abusive husbands, autoimmune disorders, and long-distance. They're the touchstone romantic relationship of the series.

Hen and Karen – 9-1-1

On 9-1-1, the mother series, representation matters without them ever bothering to make a big deal about it. When you think about Hen and Karen, you don't think about them as a lesbian couple. They're just another beautiful, realistic, loving couple with a family, and they just so happen to be lesbians.

They have broken down some barriers with their portrayal without even trying. And you cannot celebrate black love without also including some of the most beautiful examples of it via queer relationships too.

It's what makes Hen and Karen one of the best and most underrated couples. By simply being a loving, flawed, normal couple facing the same highs and lows as any other, they're quietly dismantling stigmas both as a black couple and a queer one.

Their love has withstood infidelity, depression, fertility issues, and job woes, and they've done so in a manner that resonates.

Miranda Bailey and Ben Warren – Grey's Anatomy

Stronger Together - Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 13
(ABC/Ali Goldstein)

Couples have thrived and crashed and burned on Grey's Anatomy. It's so many of them that you lose count, but Ben and Miranda are still going strong. They're probably the most stable couple in the show's history.

We've witnessed their love from the beginning, from the flirting and courting process to their marriage, and everything that has come after.

It's hard not to love their love.

Even at their worst, when they separated, they were fighting for their marriage, and the love between them never died. They've been through everything you can imagine in a marriage, and they always come out of it holding hands on the other side.

From career changes to mental illness, and health conditions, and work spats, and so much more, this couple remains one for the ages.

Ralph Angel and Darla- Queen Sugar

A Family Moment - Queen Sugar Season 4 Episode 5
(Skip Bolen/WarnerBros. Ent./OWN)

If you love the type of angst that hurts so good, Queen Sugar's Ralph Angel and Darla are the couple for you. Life has torn them apart and brought them together over and over again, but no matter what obstacles they face, they always find their way to one another.

They share a son, and the long history surrounding Blue is complicated and wrought with pain, but their love story is compelling. The soft-spoken farmer and gentle recovering addict have both overcome trauma, the criminal justice system, and so much pain, but their love story isn't limited to it, which makes all the difference.

They're strong individuals on their own, but they are stronger when they are together. Theirs is a love story that will tug at all of your heartstrings, and their resilience is inspiring.

Dre and Rainbow

Kid Free - black-ish
(ABC/Byron Cohen)

We can be grateful to Blackish for so many things, but one of the big ones is giving us a modern version of the iconic black love found in sitcoms during the '90s.

They are the Martin and Gina, the Kyle and Maxine, the Sinclair and Overton — the Dwayne and Whitley of our era. You don't find couples like them much anymore.

They have the happy, kooky family, and they balance each other out. Sure, they've had some tough times, but for the most part, they're made for each other.

Ruby and Stan Hill – Good Girls

Happy Couple - Good Girls Season 2 Episode 11
(Jordin Althaus/NBC)

Ruby and Stan are that couple. The others on Good Girls can't relate. One of the best parts about the series is watching Ruby navigate a healthy marriage, parenthood, and her life of crime.

She's the one who got into the business for her family, and Stan understood it eventually since he's willing to do anything to help and support their sick daughter too.

They're such a refreshing couple, and they're the bright spot on the show. In the face of infidelity and messy relationships from two-thirds of the Good Girls, we can always count on Ruby and Stan to be the firm, enduring couple with so much real, genuine love it jumps off the screen.

Spencer and Olivia – All American

Fancy Presentation - All American Season 2 Episode 10
(Eddy Chen/The CW)

Once again, they aren't an actual romantic couple, but it doesn't matter. They have become each other's confidant, both of them tending towards putting themselves on the backburner for those around them.

Spencer and Olivia are both nurturers, so the beauty of their relationship is how they take care of each other, giving the other what they need and deserve and don't always get from those around them. Of all the relationships on All American, they're one of the most endearing.

He literally took a bullet for her, and she's always there when he needs a shoulder to lean on.

Roger and Trish Murtaugh- Lethal Weapon

Cute Couple - Lethal Weapon Season 1 Episode 2
(Darren Michaels/FOX)

Look, Lethal Weapon devolved into a heaping mess thanks to all of the behind the scenes drama and cast shakeups, and it eventually led to the show's demise.

However, you cannot deny that Roger and Trish were total marriage goals. The badass attorney and crotchety cop had an enduring love that thawed Riggs' heart and inspired him. They were the happy type of couple that those around them aspire to be.

They had their disagreements and tiffs, but they were strong enough to withstand anything. You never doubted the love between them, and their relationship was built on deep respect and understanding of one another.

Mina and AJ – The Resident

Couple in the Making - The Resident
(Fox)

Who hasn't fallen in love with Mina and the Raptor?

Are they an official couple? No. Are they the best slow-burn on The Resident and television? Maybe.

Do they still deserve to be on this list and embody everything wonderful about black love and what it means? Hell yes.

Mina and AJ are an everythingship. They're friends, colleagues, and mentor/student. They are each other's better half in and outside of the OR, and they complete each other. The only thing they haven't done is freaking kiss already!

But the mutual respect that they share is awe-inspiring. They have become each other's person, uplifting each other, supporting one another, and leaning on each other.

They have a beautiful relationship of give and take. They encourage each other and sacrifice things for one another, and there is this trust between them that is unparalleled.

They're not even an official couple, and they're goals. He calls her his queen. Does it get better than that?

Coop and Patience – All American

Pursuing a New Path - All American Season 2 Episode 3
(Eddy Chen/CBS)

Find you a ride or die person, and you never let them go. The unwavering love and loyalty between Coop and Patience is something of which fans cannot get enough. Their love is sweet and sexy, and when they're together, the rest of the world falls away.

Patience helped Coop through the process of coping with her mother, who initially rejected her daughter for being gay, and Coop mostly supported Patience through her singing career, despite it sometimes coming at her expense.

Even when they're at odds or distant from each other, they gravitate to each other.

Malika and Isaac – Good Trouble

Smiles and Heart-Eyes - Tall - Good Trouble Season 2 Episode 15
(Freeform/Christopher Willard)

While the other characters are dealing with "will they/won't they" situations, love triangles, and pining, Malika and Isaac are the solid and steady couple of the series. And for a diverse series like Good Trouble, it was satisfying and important that the most influential couple happens to be the black one.

It's something we discussed with Sarunas Jackson during an interview. They are a pairing who deal with real issues, and they overcome them in such an authentic manner.

It started with the two of them addressing colorism, and their relationship blossomed from there as they have endured Malika's Black Lives Matter activism and family issues, as well as Isaac's anxiety together. Within their relationship, they have openly discussed a plethora of things, their culture every bit as integral to their relationship as the love between them.

Not only do they get to be #CoupleGoals, but they also get to be unapologetically and authentically black while doing so, and it's invigorating.

Gently and Evan – Cherish the Day

Evan and Gently are just two people from different worlds who are trying to live a happy life together, and the simplicity of it is relatable and precious.

Evan is from an upper-class, socialite family and Gently was raised by her uncles in an urban area, but none of that interferes with the love between them.

We follow their love story through the course of a few years, and they're just your average couple trying to figure out how to love and communicate with one another, and it's lovely.

Jazz and Doug – Grown-ish

Jazz and Doug - grown-ish
(Freeform via Getty Images/Tony Rivetti)

The couples on Grown-ish are all over the place. You don't expect anything less from a bunch of college kids who are sowing their wild oats and living their best lives at school.

But within the group of friends, Jazz and Doug are the goals. They're the type of couple who already feel as if they're married and are probably in it for the long-haul. They serve as sounding boards and relationship gurus to the others, and they're cute as hell.

Jefferson and Lynn – Black Lightning

Lovebirds - Black Lightning Season 2 Episode 1
(Quantrell D. Colbert/The CW)

You would never think a divorced couple will make it onto this list, but they're not just any divorcees. Black Lightning's Lynn and Jefferson are no longer married, but it hasn't changed the very real love between the two of them.

The two of them still operate as heads of their family with superabilities, and they have one of the healthiest relationships on television.

Tiffany and Derek -Insecure

They were so damn good together that fans thought it was too good to be true. It's one of the reasons they made it to this list, and their love was so necessary. It's the reason the series worked hard to depict this couple as such an aspirational one.

The rarity of a black couple on television, devoid of issues, was notable, and on a series about relationships and dating, especially for black women, this couple served as ideal.

Blip and Evelyn – Pitch

Blip and Evelyn - Tall - Pitch
(FOX)

Yes, you will have to pry Pitch from our cold, dead hands. On the long list of things that made this series great, the marriage between Blip and Evelyn is right up there.

They had their issues, but they always figured out how to work through them. They supported each other's dreams, and they stopped at nothing to help the other attain them, and it fits with the theme of the show.

They were allowed to dream, and they made space for each other to do so, and they fit together like puzzle pieces. It's no wonder Ginny and Mike looked to them for guidance, advice, and to be part of their family.

Angela and Cal- Watchmen

They are the definition of a power couple. You can't find a more supportive and loving couple on the air. Of all the things to take away from the series, their love is what was at the center of and grounded it.

Without going into any of the twists and turns of the series, their love was powerful and spellbinding. And given the nature of the series and what it dared to explore and address, it was poignant and provocative too.

February commemorates the celebration of black history in America and the following TV scenes prove why exactly we need this more than ever.

The post Powerful TV Proves We Need Black History Month Now More than Ever appeared first on TV Fanatic.

]]>
The month of February commemorates Black History Month, a time for our country to celebrate the hardships and hurdles the black community has overcome.

Yet, it also serves as a reminder that the fight for equality doesn't stop here, and there's no way 29 days could sufficiently pay homage to the numerous victories achieved.

Even with the abolition of slavery well over a century ago, the black community still fights for freedoms in all aspects of the law and society.

And unfortunately, our country has a history of turning a blind eye to its problematic past riddled with racism and oppression.

Good Trouble - Social Justice
(ABC)

History provides important lessons and acts as a cautionary tale, so we may not repeat it, but it seems America hasn't learned that lesson to the fullest.

Police brutality, poverty-stricken neighborhoods, racial profiling, and other issues facing the black community are all weeds from the deep-seated roots of racism that run strong through the veins of this country.

Many current TV shows, whether comedy or drama, have included narratives that speak these horrific truths.

While the news ran wild of stories involving police brutality and unwarranted killings of black people, TV shows scrambled to impart similar storylines.

The Johnson Family - black-ish
(ABC)

A show centered around a black family living in a typically affluent white neighborhood, black-ish made way for a new branch of TV shows to join the ABC network.

Responding to important topics of police brutality, the history of slavery, and a reaction to Donald Trump's election, the show makes sure to cover a broad range of important topics, and through its comedic lens attempts to put a lighter spin on otherwise depressing facts.

A standout episode of the series that received news coverage on ABC News, black-ish Season 5 Episode 2 set out to tackle the topic of police brutality.

Taking a moment to step aside from the jokes and the laughs, Dre and Bow discoursed over the realities of the world they lived in and the importance of talking them over with Jack and Diane, no matter how young they were.

Dre and Jack - black-ish Season 5 Episode 2
(ABC)

Offering a pause to the typical bantering tone of the sitcom, through teary eyes they memorialized the moment Obama gave his inauguration and offered a bit of hope to the country, alongside the fear of losing said hope.

Following its predecessor, Good Trouble Season 1 focused on Callie's clerkship of the Jamal Thompson case, easily reminiscent of the Michael Brown and Trayvon Martin cases that sparked an entire movement.

The ruthless shootings of black men happen far too often, the statistics easily show that black men are far more likely than white men to be gunned down by the police. As expressed on black-ish, police brutality toward black people is nothing new, the cameras are.

The Black Lives Matter Movement was formed in 2013 in response to the acquittal of Trayvon Martin's killer, George Zimmerman, in hopes to intervene in a racially unjust system.

BLM - tall - Good Trouble
(Freeform/Eric McCandless)

In order to bring awareness and let it be known that every human being no matter their ethnicity, sexual orientation, or gender deserves equal rights.

The scenes of Jamal's mother on Good Trouble Season 1 Episode 3 speaking in front of the courthouse in tears begging for justice for Jamal's murder were heartbreaking.

Easily an empowering moment, but one no mother should ever have to endure. Yet, a moment that is too often heard of.

A tragedy that many black parents have to explain and explicitly warn their children about.

Ben and Bailey hug - Station 19 Season 3 Episode 1
(Tony Rivetti/ABC)

After Bailey and Warren worked on a case on Grey's Anatomy Season 14 Episode 10 of a black child shot by the police after attempting to climb through the window of his own house, they expressed the harsh actualities to young Tuck.

Where most parents know "the talk" as a prepubescent sex discussion, Grey's Anatomy exchanged the term to refer to a lesson in police compliance, a lesson black parents must give to their children.

Accompanied by somber music, Bailey and Warren informed Tuck of the proper way to handle himself if confronted by the police, explaining that he did not have the same privileges as his white friends.

He could not climb through windows, throw rocks, or play with toy guns.

Tuck - Grey's Anatomy
(ABC)

The impressions left behind from the recency of the civil rights movement are visible with the prevalence of beleaguered black neighborhoods. Neighborhoods often left with fewer resources and underfunded school systems.

On This Is Us Season 3 Episode 2 we were brought along Randall's journey as he attempted to achieve what most of the tenants had tried countless times.

As expected, his persistent fight for the Rec Center did not bode well with the tenants.

He saw a run-down building with dead streetlights, warped pipes, and broken water heaters. ChiChi, William's friend, explained to him that the tenants were not the sum of their parts.

The Family Man - This Is Us Season 3 Episode 2
(Ron Batzdorff/NBC)

And, although Randall tried to use his blackness to identify with them, she reminded him he was not one of them.

He was not raised like them, and their issues were deeper than just run down amenities.

Simply changing a lightbulb or fixing a radiator wouldn't ease the pains they were accustomed to. Bandaging the wounds doesn't truly get to the source.

The interaction between ChiChi and Randall opened a conversation, making this powerful scene worthwhile.

(TALL) Struggling With Anxiety - This Is Us Season 4 Episode 11
(NBC/Ron Batzdorff)

Many politicians initially begin their careers for reasons similar to Randall to to impart change and make a difference.

However, just like Randall, most politicians don't come from the same background as the constituents they're trying to aid, offering them a skewed perspective.

Instead of trying to offer help from a desk, they should take time to sit with the people and get to know the place rather than immediately jumping to conclusion about the faults they initially see.

We can all learn about Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr., and Malcolm X in school but still be blinded to the real-time difficulties continuously plaguing the black community.

picket line
(Atsushi Nishijima/Netflix)

However, at the very least, with popularized TV shows taking a stand to highlight these tremendous challenges and heinous situations, we're left with a greater understanding that Black History Month is more than a hasty 29 days to recognize the achievements already made.

But, additionally to remind us of the long journey that still remains.

We'd love it if you left a comment down below with your thoughts and any memorable scenes that moved you.

The real issue of sexism in the workplace has been raised in recent years and is finally being mirrored in many current TV shows. Find out which ones!

The post These TV Shows are Fighting Sexism in the Workplace appeared first on TV Fanatic.

]]>
Even with the start of the new year 2020, we're still hauling around the baggage of sexism into the workplace. Heck, sexism in any capacity, even beyond the workplace!

Women continue fighting for equal pay, a place in politics, and a moment when men aren't seen as superior and more capable simply because of their gender.

It's apparent that this battle is still relevant as many current network TV shows are pushing representation all across the board for this should-be outdated norm.

Midge on stage - The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
(Amazon Prime Video)

Here's our list of TV shows putting in the good fight!

A Million Little Things

Katherine holding Theo's work - A Million Little Things
(ABC/Jack Rowand)

Katherine Saville in A Million Little Things represents the trouble in balancing motherhood and a demanding career.

During her divorce with Eddie, she gets involved with her coworker Hunter, but their relationship quickly dissipates after Hunter takes the job opportunity she turned down after the firm denied her request to take off evenings to spend time with her son Theo.

And yet again, a man receives a job over a working mother, highlighting the anti-mom bias in the workplace.

Black-ish

Dre and his office - black-ish
(ABC)

Any scene of Dre and his coworkers in the conference room at Stevens & Lido is so exaggerated and full of male chauvinism and sexist remarks it's almost laughable.

As a comedy, Black-ish uses outrageous scenarios to tell its stories and call attention to the tribulations of our times. Typically, racial oppression is at the forefront of its messaging, but sexism tends to be a large theme.

Bow's hard work as a successful doctor doesn't go without trouble as she still has to fight for her accomplishments to be seen by other doctors who might mistake her for a nurse.

Good Trouble

Mariana and Raj - Good Trouble
(Freeform)

Mariana's struggle as one of the few female software engineers in a man's world is telling of the current male-dominated culture in the field of engineering.

She's always working twice as hard as her male team members to gain recognition, let alone survive at Speckulate, and as she later learned she was hired to meet a certain "diversity" quota.

The biggest scandal she found herself at the center of was leaking the salaries of the men in an attempt to expose the disparity of pay between genders.

She risked her job and reputation to fight for something she believes in.

Grey's Anatomy

Arriving for the Chaos - Tall - Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 10
(ABC/Christopher Willard)

As a show known to address many social justice issues, Grey's Anatomy hasn't shied away from addressing sexism in the workplace. Here are a few of the best:

Remember the custody battle between Callie and Arizona, and one of the arguments used against Arizona was the unpredictability of her work hours? And Bailey shot back with an all too familiar "Would you ask that if she was a man?"

Cristina constantly reminded us she would much rather be complimented on her brains as a surgeon than her beauty.

And one of the biggest moments came from Grey's Anatomy Season 1 Episode 4 when Izzie stripped down and defended her modeling career as the thing that put her through med school.

Mindhunter

Wendy Carr
(Netflix)

According to an interesting article in New Republic, Mindhunter takes a look at toxic masculinity as the troublesome base of society.

Instead of focusing on class or race, Holden and Bill predominantly research serial killers who feel women have ruined their lives in some way and are the reason they began killing.

Wendy Carr's abilities are demeaned throughout the show as Ford is always taking the lead and she's left to follow the men around. As the show is set in the 1970s, the sexist work environment is supposed to be realistic of the times.

Mixed-ish

Alicia at law - mixed-ish Season 1 Episode 2
(ABC/Richard Cartwright)

Similar to its sequel, Mixed-ish takes on the representation of a woman of color in an all-male work environment.

Alicia is always defending her academic achievement from UC Berekely, while also working tirelessly to avoid others perceiving her hiring as a result of affirmative action.

The family's original life on the commune kept them in a bubble away from the sexism and racism of the world.

However, once the commune got raided, they were forced to undertake the harsh realities of the mid-1980s.

The Bold Type

Jacqueline
(Freeform/Philippe Bosse)

The entirety of the show focuses on a feminist workplace and the women who act as the pillars of Scarlet.

However, this directly leaves room for sexism in the workplace to shine through. Exhibit A, the entire board of directors presiding over Scarlet is a room solely comprised of men.

Scarlet, being a women's magazine, should have at least one woman on the board, but this accurately represents many current boards of directors.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

Midge on stage - The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
(Amazon Prime Video)

Midge Maisel's journey from housewife to a liberated female comic in the 1950s strongly shuts down the patriarchal standards of the era.

She successfully wows crowds with her quick-witted and sometimes crude humor and begins making a name for herself in the field of comedy.

Many times she's mistaken for a singer, but immediately shows that standards are made to be broken.

Younger

Younger's emphasis on ageism, as its name suggests, additionally emphasizes the gendered paradigm in the corporate world.

Liza put her career on hold to raise her daughter, and once she was ready to re-enter the workforce, she realized the only successful way to make it was to lie about her age.

This showcases the unfair scrutiny women receive once they're ready to return to work following a gap in employment. The mommy-gap bias is a real phenomenon and unfairly affects many mothers who had to pause their career to raise a child.

Once Liza's secret was discovered, she received a lot of backlash in response. Women are taught younger is better, especially in the workforce, but this is a sexist ideal that needs to end.

Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist

Zoey, Leif, and Tobin - Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist Season 1 Episode 1
(James Dittiger/NBC)

In this new TV musical, Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist tells the story of a female coder, mimicking the narrative of Good Trouble.

Similarly, Zoey finds herself under the employment of a kickass woman boss, but among a team of all men.

Men, who, unfortunately, are always making microaggressive and sexist comments and constantly questioning her ability as a team leader and the promotion she received on Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist Season 1 Episode 1

Traditionally overpopulated with men, the field of engineering finally sees growth with women in STEM and it's good to see this represented in newer TV shows geared toward younger demographics.

Elizabeth Jennings - The Americans

Many ABC shows look uncertain for renewal as we head into the spring, but which will not survive to the 2020-21 season? Get all the details.

The post ABC Cheat Sheet: Which Shows Will Be Canceled? appeared first on TV Fanatic.

]]>
Now that we're into 2020, the broadcast networks will be making renewal or cancellation decisions in the coming months.

But one show on the network you can count on not returning for a second season is Emergence.

The Alison Tolman-fronted mystery thriller is failing to live up to the hype in the ratings, making it a strong contender to be canceled after just one season.

Scroll down for a look at all of ABC's scripted line-up and what decision we think ABC will make on them based on most up to date ratings and network politics.

Cristina's Package - Tall - Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 9
(ABC/Kelsey McNeal)

Grey's Anatomy – Renewed

Grey's Anatomy continues to be a solid option for ABC, with Grey's Anatomy Season 16 averaging 6.1 million viewers and a 1.3 rating. The series continues to be the network's highest-rated and most-watched scripted series.

It also gets a big boost in delayed viewing, so it will really be on the air for as long as Ellen Pompeo wants to play Meredith Grey. ABC has already locked Pompeo in for next season because the series has been renewed.

There's no telling what the future holds beyond that. Fans reacted negatively to the news of Justin Chambers' exit. Could that be the thing that leads to fans tuning out for good?

Time will tell.

Getting Their Drink On - The Conners Season 2 Episode 9
(ABC/Eric McCandless)

The Conners – Certain Renewal

Despite never reaching Roseanne's level of success, The Conners is a success story for ABC. It is the network's highest-rated and most-watched comedy series, coming in at 5.7 million total viewers and a 1.1 rating.

The fans seem to agree that it is different enough from its predecessor and manages to stand on its own very well. It is a magnet in the DVR department, but it doesn't enjoy the level of success as some other series abroad.

Being a domestic success will be enough to keep this show on the air for the years to come.

Mitch Got This! - Modern Family Season 11 Episode 5
(ABC/Tony Rivetti)

Modern Family – Ending

Modern Family Season 11 is averaging 4.2 million viewers and a 1.0 rating, and the series will sign off for good later this year.

Go Big - The Goldbergs
(ABC)

The Goldbergs – Certain Renewal

This hit comedy is down somewhat from last season, losing 25% in the demo. It is currently averaging 4.1 million viewers and a 0.9 rating, so it is performing well enough to stick around.

It boasts strong increases on the DVR, so there's no reason to suggest it will be winding down any time soon.

(TALL) Severe Swelling - The Good Doctor Season 3 Episode 12
(ABC/Jack Rowand)

The Good Doctor – Certain Renewal

This medical drama has continued to erode in its third season, which is currently averaging 5.7 million viewers and a 0.8 rating.

It has always been a solid performer on the DVR front and remains a top 5 series for ABC, so it will be renewed.

Saville Family Fun - Tall - A Million Little Things Season 2 Episode 10
(ABC/Jack Rowand)

A Million Little Things – Certain Renewal

This ABC drama has been relatively steady, averaging 4.5 million viewers and a 0.8 rating. Like many shows, people watch it post-airdate, meaning that it's looming move back to 10/9c shouldn't have much of an effect on the ratings.

It will be back for a third season.

Paul is making an entrance - mixed-ish Season 1 Episode 3
(ABC)

Mixed-ish – Likely Renewal

This second spinoff of Black-ish has been pulling in passable ratings. Currently averaging 3.3 million viewers and a 0.7 rating in the demo. It also scores well in delayed viewing.

It should be back for a second season.

Schooled – Likely Renewal

This spinoff of The Goldbergs is averaging 3.2 million viewers and a 0.7 rating out of the mothership series. That's a decent hold, and the show should score a renewal unless the ratings drop considerably in the second half of the season.

Bless This Mess – Likely Renewal

Bless This Mess is the only ABC scripted series to rise in the demo year-to-year. It is averaging 3.7 million viewers and a 0.7 rating. Despite dropping a lot from The Conners, it is still a solid performer.

Single Parents – Could Go Either Way

This comedy series is down almost 25% in the demo year-to-year and is averaging 2.7 million viewers and a 0.7 rating in the demo. The series does not get the critical love of Bless This Mess or the same DVR bump.

It could go either way at this stage.

Black-ish – Likely Renewal

Even with diminished on-air ratings, there's no way ABC would cancel black-ish without a pre-planned final season. It is pulling in 2.8 million viewers and a 0.7 rating, but the show has won several awards and kick-started two successful spinoffs.

American Housewife – Likely Renewal

ABC is partly to blame for the downturn in this show's ratings. After moving to Fridays, it slipped to 3.4 million viewers and a 0.6 rating. The network wants to move the show to Wednesdays, and it should perform well enough to stick around.

A Serial Killer - The Rookie Season 2 Episode 10
(ABC)

The Rookie – Likely Renewal

The Rookie moved to Sundays and dropped in the ratings, but 3.6 million viewers and a 0.6 rating, coupled with strong returns on the DVR front means this Nathan Fillion-led series will be back for a third season.

A Recording - Stumptown Season 1 Episode 11
(ABC/Eric McCandless)

Stumptown – Could Go Either Way

Stumptown regularly doubles its Live+SD ratings on the DVR front. Stumptown Season 1 is averaging 3.1 million viewers and a 0.5 rating, but it regularly tops a 1.0 rating in Live+7.

It garnered a back 9 order, so ABC has faith in the series. If it can remain stable, it should be back for another season.

Fatal Exception - Emergence Season 1 Episode 8
(ABC/Patrick Harbron)

Emergence – Likely Cancellation

Emergence started its life as an NBC pilot, and ABC swooped in to pick it up because it believed in the series. However, Emergence Season 1 is averaging 2.8 million viewers and a 0.5 rating.

It does get a minor boost on DVR, but not enough to think it will be on ABC's schedule next season.

Shocking Discovery - How To Get Away With Murder Season 6 Episode 9
(ABC/Eric McCandless)

How to Get Away With Murder – Ending

This long in the tooth drama is averaging 2.3 million viewers and a 0.5 rating in its final season.

Jessica letter writing - Fresh Off the Boat Season 6 Episode 10

Our Favorite Comedies of the Decade https://www.tvfanatic.com/our-favorite-comedies-of-the-decade/ https://www.tvfanatic.com/our-favorite-comedies-of-the-decade/#respond Mon, 30 Dec 2019 18:00:00 +0000 https://www.tvfanatic.com/2019/12/30/our-favorite-comedies-of-the-decade/ There is a large spectrum of comedies that aired on television during the 2010s, and our job was very difficult choosing our favorites. Check them out!

The post Our Favorite Comedies of the Decade appeared first on TV Fanatic.

]]>
If you read TV Fanatic regularly, you know that we lean toward dramas and genre shows much more than comedies, so you'll probably feel the need to supplement the list of our favorite comedies with some of your own!

Please remember that with have almost two dozen favorites lists that we couldn't showcase every show on every list, so we parsed them out a bit to make it more fun.

And these lists are not in any particular order. They're in the order the entries were received by TV Fanatic staff, so don't read into them!

To qualify, a show that began in another decade had to be airing during the decade, run a larger number of seasons from 2010 through 2019 if it started before 2010 or run the entire decade. Here we go!

Roseanne Season 10 – ABC (2017-2018)

Very few sitcoms can be grouped into the all-time best category. We think of I Love Lucy, The Golden Girls, Seinfeld, and, of course, Roseanne.

When it premiered in 1988, it immediately became controversial and worked towards gathering acceptance for the LGBTQ community and broached many hot button taboo topics for its time. But in 2017, the legendary show came back for a 10th season and maintained it’s controversiality.

Now, a whole new list of issues began facing our nation, the most pressing being political division. And who else but Roseanne could attempt to bridge that gap so successfully and with such brilliant comedic delivery.

Roseanne would have been the show to help bring more people together, and that is exactly why it was a huge hit upon its return. Nobody else in Hollywood would touch it. The warring sisters, Roseanne and Jackie, represented the strife planting itself among American families all over.

And most of Hollywood wants to continue pushing an agenda that is not about bridging the divide. Sure, The Conners is still funny. But it can never be Roseanne.

It’s a shame the network felt a need to kill the title character off. Because if any teaching moments could have been had in Hollywood, it was the one surrounding her sudden exit.

Young Sheldon (2017-present)

Amazingly enough, Young Sheldon turned out to be even funnier than its parent show, Big Bang Theory.

Every episode, Sheldon struggles to interact with a world he finds as alien as everyone else finds him, and the results are hilarious.

Plus his parents and grandmother are fully-formed and funny characters in their own right.

Happy Endings – ABC (2011-2013)

We’ll never be over the end of Happy Endings. Consistently hilarious, it was full of likable characters and relatable storylines that were laugh out loud funny. Though it was only on the air for three seasons, there are still lines and phrases from the show people use to this day. That’s the sign of a comedy that was fresh and reverent and its premature cancellation is one of the biggest travesties of the decade.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine – NBC (2013-present)

As a Mike Schur show, Brooklyn Nine-Nine was almost guaranteed to produce many laughs.

But the Andy Samberg lead comedy not only proved to be one of the funniest shows of the decade, it also gave its viewers relatable characters, thoughtful storylines, and relationships that will stay with us forever.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine has touched on subjects such as police brutality, racial profiling and so much more while also making us laugh.

It has earned its praise and will hopefully live on for many more seasons.

black-ish – ABC (2014-present)

Black-ish took the old-sitcom vibe and modernized it bringing it to life with a diverse cast that focused exclusively on an upper-middle-class African-American family and what that means in the present.

It’s a thought-provoking comedy that unabashedly explored black culture in a mainstream format making it accessible to those who may not have otherwise understood or experienced it.

It deeply explores race, identity, socio-economic class, and so much more and has sparked two spin-offs that continue to do the same.

Louie – FX (2010-2015)

Louis C.K. created Louie, a semi-autobiographical look at the life and times of a stand-up comedian. He also wrote, directed, and produced every episode. It was his baby from start to finish.

It didn't fit any particular genre, and it aired on FX when Louie damned well felt like making it.

It was a simple story about a man and father filled to the brim with pathos. Louie wasn't a good man, and he wasn't a bad man, either.

But he rode a wave of faults that made him undeniably human. Louis' self-depricating human played to it very well, and if his faults weren't so eggregious in real life, we'd probably still be loving every minute of Louie whenever Louis C.K. wanted to create them.

Catastrophe – Amazon Prime (2015-2019)

The circumstances of Sharon and Rob’s relationship were, shall we say, unique (one-night-stand resulting in marriage and an unplanned family).

The circumstances were ripe with comedic opportunities, but Sharon Horgan and Rob Delaney also wrote comedy for which they were so well suited that it never seemed like they were acting no matter how drop-dead funny the situations became.

Think of two adults considering their slow walk down the sidewalk a bit of a race who actually break into a full run in dress clothes when the possibility they might “lose” presents itself.

Catastrophe was built around the absurdities of real life but still offered a significant emotional investment.

Watch it as many times as you can because every time you do, you’ll find something new that tickles your funny bone.

Parks & Recreation – NBC (2009-2015)

When Parks and Rec aired, it seemed to be The Office 2.0. But, after a season or two, it found its footing and quickly became a comedic success in its own right.

Every single character with few exceptions (sorry Mark!) was funny and stood out from all the rest.

With all the characters’ severely different personalities and comedic styles, Parks and Rec shouldn’t have worked.

But it did, and it was magical. Parks and Recreation Season 3 Episode 2, “Flu Season,” alone would guarantee the show a spot on this list, but thankfully, there are plentiful hilarious episodes that will go down as the decade’s best.

Veep – HBO (2012-2019)

Politics is funny all the time these days, but Veep’s Vice President turned President turned presidential candidate Selina Meyer was a dream character for Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

She delivered tart dialogue like she was cracking a whip and every character who surrounded Selina matched her step and was as equally delusional about what America needs continually pushed her to do more audacious and hilarious things in her quest for the White House.

Anna Chlumsky, Tony Hale, Matt Walsh, Reid Scott, Timothy Simons, Gary Cole, Kevin Dunn, and Hugh Laurie made Veep consistently funny with what seemed like minimal effort.

The Good Place – NBC (2016-2020)

The Good Place aired its first season as a likable sitcom with a unique universe, creative humor, and a diverse and talented cast.

Then the season ended. After completely blowing up its premise, there was no telling as to how the show would continue to function, and yet the series proved that it was capable of keeping its soul intact while keeping us guessing.

Every three or four episodes, the series reinvented itself with a new setting, new characters, and new storylines. Even if you claim you saw its season one twist coming, no one could have predicted the wild places the plot would go.

With only a few episodes remaining in the series, The Good Place is still taking us to new places, and it never forgets to bring its wonderful characters along for the wild ride.

Better Things – FX (2016-present)

In a similar vein as Louie, Pamela Adlon’s Better Things bridges the divide between comedy and drama as she stars as a single mother of three girls while she tries to maintain a successful career as an actress.

Created and written by Adlon, she tackles issues from childhood to motherhood without pulling punches, and her thoughts on aging are some of the best to air.

It's a uniquely personal comedy that bears Adlon's signature stamp.

She has a way with the mundane and successfully pokes fun at the banalities of life so that everyone can find a part of themselves in Better Things.

What is YOUR favorite comedy of the decade?

One of the best holiday traditions out there is the Secret Santa.

Each year friends, family, and coworkers get together to give presents to someone of their secret choosing, leaving each other with random, wonderful, sometimes horrible, gifts.

Join members of the TV Fanatic team as we discuss what we would give our favorite characters if we got them in Secret Santa.

Secret Santa
(HBO/Netflix/ABC/Freeform)

Sutton and Jane – The Bold Type

Jane and Sutton - The Bold Type
(Freeform)

They're getting monogrammed "personal massagers," so they can avoid any potential ick factor moments in the future.

Friends have got to be close, but there is such thing as too close.

Sutton and Jane had to learn this hard way when Sutton was moving out of their apartment.

The Entire Cast – Daybreak

Daybreak Cast
(Netflix)

The cast of Daybreak needs a second season.

Daybreak was one of the highlights of television this year and finding out that the show had met such an untimely demise was a punch in the gut.

These characters deserve a second season to continue their journey through the apocalypse.

The Perfectionists – PLL: The Perfectionists

Eli, Sydney and Sofia - The Perfectionists
(Freeform/Kurt Iswarienkio)

PLL: The Perfectionists may be over, but that wouldn't stop us from giving them one last parting gift.

A state of the art surveillance system could be exactly what they need to go up against The Professor.

Best way to fight a stalker is to stalk them right back.

Jon – Game of Thrones

Back to the Night's Watch - Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 6
(Helen Sloan/HBO)

We know exactly what to get Jon Snow.

He's getting an iron throne replica because that man deserved to be King of the Seven Kingdoms.

In an unfortunate series finale, Jon being banished to the wall instead of leading the realm into a new age was one of the saddest parts.

Dolores/Wyatt – Westworld

Innocence - Westworld Season 2 Episode 2
(HBO)

Dolores and Wyatt need a pop-culture encyclopedia!

Now that she's out in the real world, she has a lot of catching up to do on what's going on.

Most importantly she needs to get caught up on pop culture so she can have something to talk to people about.

Meredith – Grey's Anatomy

Cristina's Package - Tall - Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 9
(ABC/Kelsey McNeal)

Meredith Grey needs to study up to keep from going to the pokey again.

She's getting a book of Washington's medical laws.

If we learned nothing else from her trial with the medical board, it is that Meredith Grey cannot stop breaking the rules, so she might want to brush up on them to avoid any future issues.

Dustin – Stranger Things

The NeverEnding Story - Stranger Things
(Netflix)

Dustin's gift is also a gift for us.

He's getting a karaoke machine so that we can listen to him sing "The NeverEnding Story" over and over again until the end of time.

Who didn't love Dustin and his girlfriend serenading eachother during Stranger Things Season 3

Chidi – The Good Place

Down to the Wire - The Good Place Season 4 Episode 7
(Colleen Hayes/NBC)

Chidi has a very particular dilemma he faces, and we aim to help him combat it.

He's getting a Magic Eight Ball to help him make decisions since he hates making choices.

Sometimes we all just need a little extra help making the tough choices, and an impartial inanimate object is the perfect solution for someone as indecisive as Chidi.

Kim – Better Call Saul

Kim Wexler - Better Call Saul
(AMC)

We're getting Kim something that will make her time on Better Call Saul Season 5 a lot easier.

She's getting a lie detector because you know that Jimmy is going to lie to her a ton as he becomes the Saul that we all know and love.

You almost have to wonder, though, if Jimmy could manage to pass one with how experienced he is at lying.

Wade – The Unicorn

The Hottest Single Guy - The Unicorn Season 1 Episode 1
(Michael Yarish/CBS)

This one almost makes us cry. Wade is getting the complete DVD set of 8 Simple Rules (for Dating My Teenage Daughter).

That way he can laugh and cry with a family in a similar situation as his.

It also can give him some guidance on how to raise kids in a sitcom setting.

Mary – Young Sheldon

Mary Cooper - Young Sheldon
(CBS)

Mary is the queen of sticking by her religious beliefs.

A Buddy Christ dashboard ornament (ala the movie Dogma), would be a perfect present for her.

After all, Buddy Christ totally is her co-pilot.

Family Gift – black-ish

The Johnson Family - black-ish
(ABC)

What do you get the family that seems to have everything?

They get a set of Hogwarts robes for everyone in the family.

Everyone is sorted into houses, of course. Jack, Junior — Hufflepuff; Diane, Ruby — Slytherin; Zoe, Rainbow — Ravenclaw; Dre, Pops –Gryffindor; and Devante gets to be a House Elf.

Morty – Rick and Morty

Morty - Rick and Morty
(Cartoon Network/Adult Swim)

Poor Morty. Hopefully, this gift will put a smile on his face.

Morty is getting a Back to the Future Board Game so that he can go on an Adventure Through Time with his family without anyone dying for once.

Is an adventure without death too much to ask for?

Christy – Mom

Christy Shrugs - Mom
(Photo by Robert Voets / 2019 Warner Bros.)

Look, taking care of a living creature is tough.

For someone who might not be the most proficient at it, a pet Algae/Marimo (https://www.tofugu.com/japan/marimo/) is a great gift.

Christy deserves something that thrives despite her spotty care.

Delilah – A Million Little Things

Feeling the heat - tall - A Million Little Things Season 2 Episode 9
(ABC)

Oh, Delilah, it's possible nothing can help us forgive you let alone like you.

But, we're gifting you a self-help book because you clearly don't understand that you need help.

Delilah hasn't only caused herself pain, but she has hurt everyone around her.

She needs to get her life together.

Malcolm – Prodigal Son

Normalcy - tall - Prodigal Son Season 1 Episode 9
(Phil Caruso/FOX)

Our gift for Malcolm should make life for those working with him a lot easier, too.

He needs a tracking chip so he can be found whenever he runs off impulsively without telling anyone, or, you know, gets kidnapped by a serial killer

A tracking chip could make everyone else's lives so much simpler.

Alex – Grey's Anatomy

Backing Mer- Tall - Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 8
(ABC/Kelsey McNeal)

Alex Karev has been MIA far too much on Grey's Anatomy Season 16

He needs his position at the hospital back so he can finally have actual screentime and a plot.

With Bailey on the verge of a mental breakdown, now would be the perfect time for him to step up as Chief at Grey Sloan.

Owen – Grey's Anatomy

Owen Speaks Out - tall - Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 8
(ABC/Christopher Willard)

Owne is getting macaroni gifts from all of his kids. We don't even need to pay for anything!

Once it seemed like he might not get the children he wanted so badly, but he sure seems to have enough of them now.

Hopefully, Amelia isn't giving him another one (Oops! Did we say that out loud?).

Maggie – Grey's Anatomy

Maggie's Burden - Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 7
(ABC/Kelsey McNeal)

Maggie is a beautiful, smart, successful woman, but she has no luck when it comes to her love life.

She's getting a matchmaker gift card so that she can find a man who appreciates her.

Prefererbly, she'll find a man who doesn't work at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital!

Liz Ortecho – Roswell, New Mexico

Who Are You? - Roswell, New Mexico
(Ursula Coyote/The CW)

Liz got her sister back during Roswell, New Mexico Season 1, but in turn she lost the man she loves.

You've got to love a no-win situation.

What Liz could use for Christmas this year is an alien remedy to revive Max and age up her sister Rosa.

The Roy Family – Succession

The Roy Family - Succession
(HBO)

The Dale Carnegie series that started with How to Win Friends and Influence People is a great gift for every member of the Roy family.

They need to start with the basics of learning how to treat people better.

Maybe we can wipe the Scrooge-like qualities right out of their lives!

The Dutton Family – Yellowstone

The Dutton Family on Yellowstone
(Paramount Network)

The Dutton Family is still grieving the loss of their family matriarch.

We're going to give them something that they might not be all that willing to accept.

They're getting counseling sessions so that they can start living in the now without continually crushing the souls of those remaining family members they have left.

Conrad and Nic – The Resident

CoNic is Inevitable - Tall - The Resident Season 3 Episode 10
(Guy D’Alema/FOX)

Merry Christmas, Conrad and Nic! We're getting you tickets for a cruise.

They can't vacation at home because the lure of the hospital is too hard for them to ignore, so they need to be held captive on a moving vessel (albeit a luxury vessel) to get some quality alone time. Finally.

And now that Conrad is without a job, they can really use the break (for free!).

Athena and Bobby – 9-1-1

Holding On - 9-1-1 Season 2 Episode 18
(Jack Zeman/FOX)

This romantic pair does so much for the benefit of others.

We're giving them seed money so that they can start their own non-profit counseling fellow first responders.

While they could use a little therapy themselves, they're always called on to restore their coworkers' faith in humanity, and with the number of times they've succeeded so far, why not share the wealth?

Diana and Matthew – A Discovery of Witches

Diana and Matthew - A Discovery of Witches
(AMC)

We'd offer this romantic pair a catalog of DVDs so that they can watch the OG Charmed, The Vampire Diaries, and even Witches of East End.

Those shows could help them navigate being different species of supernatural creatures in love while continuously battling outside forces trying to tear them apart.

It would have been a Netflix subscription, but as fast as these shows bounce from one streamer to another, DVDs are all that we can count on anymore!

Abby Lee Miller – Dance Moms

Abby's Ultimatum - Dance Moms
(Lifetime)

We'd give Abby a new pair of working legs.

She never really did the choreography with the kids, but she should at least have a chance to give it a god.

After serving her year in prison only to get Burkitt lymphoma and almost die, it's the least we can do!

Lifetime Casts Real Couple in First LGBT+ Christmas Film and More!
