Is Freeland beyond saving?

That's what Jefferson Pierce seems to think in the trailer for Black Lightning Season 4.

If you watch Black Lightning online, you know Henderson was killed off at the close of Black Lightning Season 3, which weighs heavily on Jefferson throughout the trailer.

“No matter how hard I try to protect my family, it will always end in tragedy,” Jefferson declares. “I can no longer be the man I was.”

“Black Lightning is dead,” he adds, eliciting the following response from Gambi:

“Freeland will be lost without Black Lightning!”

That's when Jefferson declares, “Freeland is lost.”

Yep, it's going to be a wild ride to the finish for this beloved CW drama.

The surprising end-date announcement was made in November.

“When we first started the Black Lightning journey, I knew that Jefferson Pierce and his family of powerful Black Women would be a unique addition to the superhero genre,” executive producer Salim Akil said in a statement.

“The love that Blerds and all comic book fans around the globe have shown this series over the past three seasons proved what we imagined, Black People Want To See Themselves in all their complexities.”

(Bob Mahoney/The CW)

“While Season 4 may be the end of one journey,” Akil added, “I’m extremely excited to usher in a new chapter and continued collaboration with The CW as we tell the story of Painkiller” — by way of a spinoff that has been in development, starring Black Lightning vet Jordan Calloway.

The spinoff is still in the works at the network and is set to air as a backdoor pilot during Black Lightning Season 4.

Additionally, China Ann McClain will only appear in a limited amount of episodes, with the actress revealing shortly after the end date announcement that she planned to quit the series during the season.

“What I did know and have known along with the rest of the cast since before we even started shooting this season is that I am leaving the show. And was leaving the show. This was going to be my last season,” she said in November.

Black Lightning returns Monday, February 8.

Santa has a list, he's checked it twice, and he knows exactly which TV characters were naughty or nice. And this bunch was definitely on the naughty list!

'Tis the season for everyone to do their best to convince Santa that they’ve been on their best behavior all year.

But Santa can’t be fooled. He has a list, he's checked it twice, and he knows exactly which TV characters were naughty or nice.

2020 was a tough year for all of us.

But for every character that deserves a nice Christmas gift is a character who has been so bad that all they should get is a lump of coal under the tree.

Murder, corruption, kidnapping, jealousy, and even hero complexes have landed all of these characters on Santa’s naughty list!

You Season 2 premiered towards the backend of 2019, but Joe and Love were so bad that they truly deserve to be on every naughty list until the end of time.

As Joe's body count continued to rise, Love was revealed to be equally as crazy. And the fact that these two are about to become parents doesn’t excuse their stalker-ish and murder-ish behavior.

Even with Love by his side and a baby on the way, Joe has already found his next obsession for You Season 3: the neighbor next door.

You can blame most of the crime in Gotham City on the one and only Alice.

She's a cold-blooded killer who rarely shows any remorse on Batwoman Season 1.

Not even her family is spared from her wrath and paranoia. She has killed her step-mom and the Commander’s wife, Catherine, double-crossed her “brother” Mouse by poisoning him, and hatched an elaborate plan to kill her very own sister Batwoman/Kate Kane.

Choosing - Batwoman Season 1 Episode 20
(Dean Buscher/The CW)

Charmaine was insufferable on Virgin River Season 2. She let her insecurities get the best of her, which resulted in behaviors fueled by jealousy.

She was rude to Mel, who went out of her way to help her during her high-risk pregnancy and constantly made Jack feel guilty for wanting to live his life on his own terms, making it hard to sympathize with her.

And she couldn't take no for an answer. There are theories that she's responsible for shooting Jack, and if that's true, she deserves more than coal!

Unexpected Guest - Virgin River Season 2 Episode 9
(Netflix)

Teddy on Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 deserves some kudos for being on the frontline treating COVID patients, so maybe Santa will go easy on her.

However, she certainly earned herself a place on the naughty list for the naughty, sexy times she had with her ex on her wedding day.

And sadly for her, thanks to a butt dial, she broadcasted it so that Owen, his OR, and the entire North Pole could hear it.

Distance Between Teddy - Tall - Grey's Anatomy Season 17 Episode 6
(ABC)

Chastain has never seen villains quite like Barrett Cain and Logan Kim on The Resident Season 3, and we're talking about a staff that has dealt with Lane Hunter!

Cain has been driven by his ego for much of the season and always prioritized himself, which is why he kept quiet about the superbug and caused innocent patients to fall ill.

Logan Kim co-conspired with Cain to get Conrad booted, had no respect for any of the employees and only saw dollar bills.

And when it came down to it, he turned his back on Cain to save himself and his reputation.

The Call of all Calls- Tall - The Resident Season 3 Episode 18
(Guy D’Alema/FOX)

The show may be titled “good girls,” but the only thing Beth, Annie, and Ruby are good at is being bad to the bone.

They’ve had so many chances to bow out of a life of crime, but instead, they justify their actions by convincing themselves they are doing it all to support their family.

Beth spent so much of her energy hiring a hitman to kill Rio on Good Girls Season 3, but she failed to realize that they’ve become just as bad as Rio, who also takes a spot on the naughty list for killing Lucy (and possibly Boomer).

The only difference between Rio and the girls is that he owns his actions.

Rio Listens - Good Girls Season 3 Episode 4
(Jordin Althaus/NBC)

You'll never see Hiram Lodge's name on a "good list." Ever.

He continues to manipulate and sabotage his daughter at every chance he gets. At this point, it’s petty.

He also broke out of jail by making his wife seem guilty of murder and weaseled his way into becoming Mayor of Riverdale so he could assert his power over the residents.

However, there are some other Riverdale Season 4 residents whose actions have also landed them on the naughty list!

Twisted Mister - Riverdale
(Bettina Strauss/The CW)

Archie snagged a spot on the list for letting his hero complex get the best of him.

He so desperately wants to be in amongst the action, even if it puts everyone he loves in danger.

And who can forget this season’s true villains… the Stonewall Prep Literary Club of Donna Sweett, Joan Berkeley, Bret Weston Wallis, & Jonathan.

These four made it their mission to make Jughead’s life a living hell and dragged Betty Cooper down with them.

Duel - Riverdale Season 4 Episode 12
(Dean Buscher/The CW)

Not only did they constantly act superior to him and his friends, but the quartet also tried to murder our favorite aspiring writer to achieve their sadistic goals.

They played mind-games, blackmailed people, lied constantly, and broke the law on many occasions. All four of them deserve the biggest piles of coal for the pain they caused our Riverdale group!

Faustus Blackwood has always been a thorn in the coven’s side, so much so that his own daughter, Prudence, tried to kill him.

Unfortunately, she was stopped by Ambrose, and it seems that Faustus’ spell in the final moment of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Season 3 will be the catalyst for the eldritch terrors, which culminate in The Void (the end of all things) on Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Season 4.

Faustus Blackwood - Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
(Netflix)

Lucifer was bad on Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, sure, but we never expected the devil himself to be good.

However, Guy LaMontagne (also played by Luke Cook in the sister series) on Katy Keene is a different story.

We expected more from the fashion mogul, but he proved to be the kind of man that succeeds by stealing designs of budding fashion designers.

Katy even found a sketchbook filled with designs stolen from his other apprentices, whom he blacklisted from the industry.

A Nice Guy - Katy Keene Season 1 Episode 8
(Scott McDermott/The CW)

And the worst part is that he preyed on her feelings for him.

The Guiding Hope gang (Murphy, Jess, Felix, and Max) on In the Dark Season 2 also made the cut!

Despite their attempts to get out of the game, Murphy and her friends keep getting sucked into the illegal life.

They're potentially under the thumb of another drug dealer, killed the last one, and now they're on the run. The only one NOT getting coal this year is Pretzel.

Murphy In the Dark
(The CW)

While some may say that the robbers holding a bunch of innocent people hostage on Money Heist Season 4 are the “bad guys,” they don’t hold a candle to Arturito.

He’s a human sludge ball that's hated by audiences alike – which truly speaks to Enrique Arce's talents.

After escaping the first heist, he tried to make money off his hostage survival story by becoming a motivational speaker.

Then, he purposefully locked himself inside the Royal Mint of Spain, tried to get close to his baby momma Stockholm, and drugged and raped/sexually assaulted one of his fellow hostages. Seriously, this guy is the worst!

Arturo Roman - Money Heist
(Netflix)

Why did Agent Odell never treat the Pierce family as equal allies?

At every turn, Agent Odell acted with a secret ulterior motive that hindered the heroes, even though he needed their help to defeat the Markovians on Black Lightning Season 4.

He drugged Lynn and caused her addiction, he manipulated Jennifer into becoming a weapon, he killed Issa Williams and countless meta-humans, and he controlled Freeland with a deadly army.

And what's equally worse is that he tried to justify his evil actions as being for the good of humankind to stop a potential meta-human war.

The ASA's Past - Black Lightning Season 3 Episode 16
(Bob Mahoney/The CW)

The Necromancer is the most obvious choice for Santa’s naughty list as he’s responsible for all the darkness engulfing Mystic Falls on Legacies Season 2.

He recreated the pit to Malivore, brought back Kai, activated "dark Josie," forced her and Lizzie to complete the Merge, and puppeteered Rafael into stabbing Landon with the golden arrow . . . to name a few of his evil deeds.

Unfortunately, Caroline Forbes also isn’t being spared!

It's hard to give someone coal when they haven't appeared on the show in the flesh, but Caroline is a terrible mother.

Hope is Over the Necromancer - Tall - Legacies Season 1 Episode 7
(Jace Downs/The CW)

Her daughters are relentlessly pursued by monsters, psycho family members, and everything else imaginable, but she fails to return to check in on them.

We know Candice King isn't interested in reprising her character. Can they at least recast the character or kill her off? We know this isn't how she would behave!

Hvitserk killed Lagertha on Vikings Season 6. That's about as peak 2020 as you'll get. Granted, it was all down to some preposterous prophecy, but there's just no redeeming him.

Is it Christmas without Frank trying to swindle his entire family on Shameless Season Season 10?

Frank's Back - Shameless Season 11 Episode 1
(Showtime)

He'll never learn, but the family will still somehow find a way to let him back into their lives. Hopefully, something of note makes him change his ways in the final season.

Cassie of The Flight Attendant is an utter trainwreck.

She uses her friends and people who don't even want to be associated with her to get what she wants. It's tiring, but the writing for her is so good that you can’t look away.

Definitely give her some coal, though!

In Her Hands - The Flight Attendant Season 1 Episode 7
(HBO Max)

Bette is the definition of petty and privilege on Tiny Pretty Things.

You feel terrible for her at first because she's undervalued by her mother and living in her more-successful sister's shadow.

However, Bette uses that insecurity to lash out at her friends and do underhanded actions to push herself ahead at her ballet school.

Bette didn't have to talk down to her so-called best friend June or sabotage her duet. Bette didn't need to act superior to the new girl, Neveah.

Bette on Tiny Pretty Things
(Netflix)

And she didn't need to engage in a threesome to get a part or lash out at her boyfriend. Bette has a lot of growing up to do.

We have no idea whether Jamie was involved with the attempted murders of every member of his family on Yellowstone Season 3, but he's definitely veering in an odd direction after finding his birth father.

Since his birth father murdered his birth mother, we're pretty sure that siding with him won't bring him the warm fuzzies he's seeking. For that, he finds himself on the naughty list.

Usually, reality TV characters are spared from this list, but an exception must be made for Yosef Aborady, the villain of The Bachelorette Season 16.

Kill the King - Yellowstone Season 3 Episode 10
(Paramount Network)

Yosef disrespected Clare Crawley before she found love with Dale Moss and was replaced by Tayshia Adams by calling her “classless” over a strip dodgeball date.

The situation escalated with him cutting her off and telling her that she doesn’t set “the right example” for his daughter, as if his behavior somehow did.

He also said he expected more “from the oldest Bachelorette” in history.

During the men-tell all, host Chris Harrison gave him a shot at redemption, but again, Yosef found no issue with how he spoke to Clare and refused to apologize even when countless men called him out for his arrogant behavior.

Yosef on The Bachelorette Season 16 Episode 10
(ABC/Craig Sjodin)

All of us are shaking our heads right along with Harrison, including Santa.

Gretchen on The Wilds. The Wilds is quite the thrill ride, a ride entirely manipulated by Gretchen Klein.

We have no idea about her motivation or what her machinations mean in the long term, but treating people as test subjects gets her a firm spot on the naughty list.

Homelander on The Boys will probably never get off of the naughty list. America's hero, he is not, even though he is admired by people the world over.

Laughter and Despair - The Boys Season 2 Episode 8
(Amazon Prime Video)

He's an angry, troubled little man connected with a genuine Nazi to maintain his top spot.

Will Jen and Judy on Dead to Me start making better decisions in the third and final season? Their lies have gotten them and others in trouble too many times.

They need to stop thinking about themselves and find a better path to get any presents from Santa.

Marty and Wendy Byrde’s actions on Ozark continue landing them in hot water.

Marty and Wendy Byrde
(Tina Rowden/Netflix)

Their little trip into the underbelly of the drug trade gets people killed. While the bodies pile up around them, they continue making bad decisions after bad decisions leading to more and more death. Santa is not visiting Wendy or Marty.

Darlene Snell is a cold-hearted psychopath who killed her husband and pursued a disturbing relationship with a much-younger Wyatt Langmore. Her predatory behavior is unsettling, to say the least.

Big Sky is ABC’s latest drama, and it has no share of characters who would end up on the naughty list.

Of course, Rick Legarski, the Montana trooper, and Ronald Pergman, a blue-collar truck driver, both top the list for murder and kidnapping young girls to sell them into a life of prostitution.

Trooper Rick - Big Sky Season 1 Episode 5
(ABC/Darko Sikman)

It's even worse when they try to justify their behavior by saying they're cleaning up America.

Det. Armstrong started off The Rookie as a detective mourning his wife's death and mentoring rookie Officer John Nolan. Nick was smart, empathetic, and generous with his time and advice, all things that seem to make him a shoo-in for the Nice List.

But Detective Armstrong had a secret… he was a dirty cop. We were shocked when he shot and killed another officer to keep her quiet and horrified when he set up Nolan to look like he was the cop working for the mob.

Even if Armstrong gets away with his crimes, he'll still have a permanent place on Santa's Naughty List.

Nick Looks Broken Up - The Rookie Season 2 Episode 20
(ABC/Kelsey McNeal)

Moff Gideon on The Mandalorian made the list for kidnapping Baby Yoda. That's all it took!

Rupert Manion on Ted Lasso is getting coal for being a womanizer who never misses an opportunity to attack Rebecca — his ex-wife — personally and professionally.

While most of the Intelligence Unit on Chicago PD Season 8 works to make Chicago a safe place, Kenny Nolan has made it his mission to destroy Atwater for sticking up for what he believes in and not standing by as a racist cop gets away with profiling and murdering a black man.

Kenny was a bully who went to great lengths to intimidate and punish Atwater. He deserves all the coal.

Mighty Return - Tall - Filthy Rich Season 1 Episode 10
(Skip Bolen / FOX)

Eugene Monreaux on Filthy Rich was the filthiest of them all.

From his infidelity to impregnating a harem of women, to pretending to be dead, to ripping off the poor, to his penchant for young women, this so-called God-fearing man should be terrified of Santa (and Satan) because he's definitely only getting lumps of coal in his stocking.

He is Cesar no more. After years of fighting against gang life, Cesar has officially taken over his brother's spot as the leader on On My Block.

Lil Spooky won't be seeing that jolly man in red coming down the chimney to leave him anything festive.

Kreese on Cobra Kai
(Netflix)

And lastly, Santa won't be showing Sensei Kreese any mercy in the coal department.

After blowing into town, manipulating Johnny, taking over his dojo, and fostering the worst in the Cobra Kai students, he more than earned himself a spot on that naughty list.

Turning it over to you, festive TV Fanatics!

Which 2020 characters would you add to Santa's naughty list?

Black Lightning star, China Anne McClain has announced she was planning to quit Black Lightning during its fourth season. Get all the details.

The end of Black Lightning was announced by The CW last week.

But one of the stars of the show was gearing up to exit ahead of the announcement.

In an Instagram Video posted on Saturday, China Anne McClain, who plays Jennifer Pierce, announced she was leaving the series "regardless of if it went on or not."

The actress confirmed she did not know the series would be ending with its fourth season until the news was announced.

“What I did know and have known along with the rest of the cast since before we even started shooting this season is that I am leaving the show. And was leaving the show. This was going to be my last season.”

McClain will also not be back as a regular during the final season, announcing she is only signed on for a limited number of episodes.

The actress did not delve into her decision to leave, but did leave some hints.

“There’s been a lot to happen over this quarantine, and I’m not talking about the PC side of it,” she said.

“God is moving me in more than one way than just this show. It’s bigger than this show. I’m doing God’s work now… and I’m not doing anything else.”

She did say, however, that she was not leaving the series because of any on-set drama and said that it was a personal choice to depart.

“I’m not leaving because I had a terrible time working at The CW,” she said.

“I like the CW. I like [CW network president] Mark Pedowitz, I like [Warner Bros. president] Peter Roth, [EP] Greg Berlanti, I love [showrunner] Salim [Akil], I always will. He gets it. And people that actually know me, they know why I make the decisions that I make.”

The actress went on to congragulate Akil and co-star Jordan Calloway following the recent announcement that a spinoff is in development.

“Congratulations to Salim and Jordan, who just got a spinoff. Please support him in that. God did that for him, and he’s going to do great, I know it,” McClain added.

The popular series stars Cress Williams as Jefferson Pierce, McClain as Jennifer Pierce, Nafessa Williams as Anissa Pierce, Christine Adams as Lynn Stewart, Marvin “Krondon” Jones III as Tobias Whale, James Remar as Peter Gambi, Chantal Thuy as Grace Choi, and Calloway as Khalil Payne.

The CW is saying goodbye to another superhero drama this season.

The network announced Monday that the upcoming fourth season of Black Lightning will be its last.

“When we first started the Black Lightning journey, I knew that Jefferson Pierce and his family of powerful Black Women would be a unique addition to the super hero genre,” executive producer Salim Akil said in a statement.

“The love that Blerds and all comic book fans around the globe have shown this series over the past three seasons proved what we imagined, Black People Want To See Themselves in all their complexities.”

He continued, “Thank you to the phenomenal cast, writers and crew without whom none of this would’ve been possible."

Clear Mind, Clear Senses - Black Lightning Season 3 Episode 16
(Bob Mahoney/The CW)

I’m incredibly proud of the work we’ve been able to do and the moments we’ve been able to create in bringing DC’s first African-American family of super heroes to life for the culture.”

“I’m very grateful to Peter Roth, Warner Bros. TV, Mark Pedowitz, The CW Network and Greg Berlanti for their partnership and support of my vision at every step of this journey,” he concluded.

“While Season Four may be the end of one journey, I’m extremely excited to usher in a new chapter and continued collaboration with The CW as we tell the story of Painkiller.”

Black Lightning stars Cress Williams as Jefferson Pierce, China Anne McClain as Jennifer Pierce, Nafessa Williams as Anissa Pierce, Christine Adams as Lynn Stewart, Marvin “Krondon” Jones III as Tobias Whale, James Remar as Peter Gambi, Chantal Thuy as Grace Choi, and Calloway as Khalil Payne.

Testimony - Black Lightning Season 3 Episode 16

The end date announcement for Black Lightning is somewhat surprising, especially considering the series is still pretty early into its run.

Still, it was recently revealed that a spinoff is in the works, starring Calloway, and the backdoor pilot is set to air next year.

“Khalil Payne is a young man ridden with the guilt of his troubled past from his former life in Freeland City, where, as a super-enhanced killing machine known as Painkiller, he was both a member of Tobias Whale’s gang and a weapon of Agent Odell and the shadowy ASA," reads the official description of the series.

"After attempting to bury the darker, devastatingly lethal Painkiller part of his persona, Khalil has distanced himself away from everyone he knows and loves in a new city, Akashic Valley, in order to find peace, but peace never comes easy for men with pasts like Khalil Payne and Painkiller."

Victims of War - Black Lightning Season 3 Episode 16
(Annette Brown/The CW)

"As his violent, destructive history crashes his idyllic new beginning, Khalil is thrusted back into action with a new mission — bring justice where he once gave out punishment — but to do that, he will first have to deal with and harness his darker side, Painkiller.”

The news comes just months after it was announced that Supergirl will be wrapping with its upcoming sixth season.

The CW has a Problem with Representation https://www.tvfanatic.com/the-cw-has-a-problem-with-representation/ https://www.tvfanatic.com/the-cw-has-a-problem-with-representation/#respond Fri, 31 Jul 2020 17:00:00 +0000 https://www.tvfanatic.com/2020/07/31/the-cw-has-a-problem-with-representation/ The CW and Representation

The CW has many shows with all kinds of representation, but having diversity is not enough. In this editorial, we explore why their attempt at diversity fails.

The post The CW has a Problem with Representation appeared first on TV Fanatic.

]]>
If you had to name one television network that has decent diversity, you might say the CW.

After all, how could it not be the CW? There is Riverdale, a show with an interracial lesbian relationship. Supergirl’s Alex Danvers had an incredible coming out storyline. The list goes on forever.

However, having diversity does not automatically make it good representation. Arguably, the CW has largely mishandled both LGBTQ+ and racial diversity on their shows.

The CW and Representation
(the CW)

A prime example is their teen drama, Riverdale, a show that seems to have a lot of representation on the surface. So, that should be okay, right?

Wrong, because their version of “representation” is just tokenism. They queer-baited the audience on Riverdale Season 1 Episode 1 when Betty and Veronica kissed during cheerleading tryouts.

Riverdale tried to play it off as “faux-lesbian kissing,” but this relationship quickly hooked viewers, especially since Betty and Veronica remained close on the following episodes.

However, by Riverdale Season 2, their sensual moments sizzled out, leaving only a genuine friendship.

But Riverdale Season 2 introduced Toni Topaz, and soon enough, she developed a relationship with Cheryl Blossom.

The Maple Club - Riverdale Season 4 Episode 13
(Dean Buscher/The CW)

Affectionately dubbed “Choni,” they became a fan favorite couple, but not without a price.

Cheryl and Toni faded to background noise as the show decided to focus on heterosexual characters and couples.

Furthermore, Vanessa Morgan, who plays Toni Topaz, even criticized how the show’s writers handle their black characters.

Do not forget about Josie McCoy, leader of the band Josie and the Pussycats. She was a prominent character on earlier seasons, but recently, only appeared on Riverdale Season 4 Episode 1, making Toni the only black series regular.

Vanessa Morgan said it best: “Tired of us also being used as sidekick nondimensional characters to our white leads. Or only used in the ads for diversity but not actually in the show. Too bad I’m the only black series regular but also paid the least. Girl, I could go on for days.”

Blossom Curse - Riverdale Season 4 Episode 8
(Jack Rowand/The CW)

Toni Topaz deserves more screentime as a character and with her girlfriend, Cheryl Blossom, and she deserves her own storylines. Black characters and LGBTQ+ relationships are not there to be secondary to white characters and heterosexual relationships.

That is not good representation, and that is not how diversity works.

At this point, Riverdale should not bother if they are going to treat minorities terribly.

Unfortunately, Riverdale is not the only show with a history of queerbaiting. Supergirl is another example, and they also passed off white LGBTQ+ relationships as interracial. Furthermore, they sideline their characters of color.

The obvious queerbaiting example is SuperCorp, the relationship between Kara Danvers and Lena Luthor.

Lena and Kara - Supergirl Season 5 Episode 13
(Katie Yu/The CW)

Kara and Lena are extremely popular among fans, but that is not why they queerbait fans. They fit the description because of how the writers explore their relationship.

Sappy background music? A friendship with romantic undertones? Longing stares? Scenes focused on the tension between the two characters?

Check, check, check, and check.

As time went on, SuperCorp’s relationship only became more intense; their friendship was less platonic with every new season. Just when viewers thought something would happen between Kara and Lena, Supergirl pulled them back to the harsh reality — Kara and Lena are just friends, and nothing romantic is supposed to happen.

At least, there is Alex Danvers, Kara’s sister, who had one of the best coming out arcs in the history of television. Supergirl was praised for Alex’s LGBTQ+ arc, and rightfully so. However, the problem here is not Alex — it is her relationships.

Slow Dance - Supergirl Season 2 Episode 13
(Dean Buscher/The CW)

Fans adored the relationship between Alex Danvers and Maggie Sawyer on Supergirl Season 2. They were heartbroken at Maggie’s sudden exit on Supergirl Season 3 Episode 5.

Maggie Sawyer was a beloved character, but the writers were incredibly wrong to portray her as a woman of color if they could not get a Latina actress. Floriana Lima is not Latina; she is not even a person of color.

It was a grave mistake to portray Alex and Maggie’s relationship, dubbed Sanvers, as an interracial relationship. Furthermore, they wrote Maggie off in a cheap, out-of-the-blue way, letting down fans after heavily promoting this relationship.

Now, Alex is in a relationship with Kelly Olsen, James’s sister. Finally, an interracial sapphic relationship.

But where is their screen time? Alex and Kelly are on-screen plenty, but we barely got to see them as an actual couple, in scenes where it was just the two of them.

Kelly and Alex - Supergirl Season 5 Episode 14
(Sergei Bachlakov/The CW)

Representation is not good if it does not get deserved screen time. So, as long as the writers continue to sideline Alex and Kelly’s relationship, we will have to look elsewhere for a better sapphic interracial relationship.

We should also not forget the original Olsen & Danvers relationship, between James and Kara on Supergirl Season 1. They were a sweet friendship that blossomed into romance on Season 1 Episode 18.

But by the time Supergirl Season 2 rolled around, their romance was shoved to the side in favor of the new basic white boy, Mon-El. He became Kara’s new love interest, leaving James in the background.

Not cool, Supergirl. Not cool at all.

With the show going into its sixth season, the writers did not get the message that the way they write sapphic and interracial relationships is a disservice to LGBTQ+ fans and fans of color.

What to Watch: Outlander, Shining Vale, Upload

Supergirl, please do better.

But Riverdale and Supergirl are not the only examples on the CW. They are not exceptions, but rather, the rule.

Another example is The Vampire Diaries and the way they treat their characters of color.

Bonnie Bennett is one of the best-written characters on the show. She was selfless, strong, and smart — everything you could want in a badass female character.

The only problem? The writers treated her like trash.

Bonnie Casting a Final Spell - The Vampire Diaries
(The CW)

She had a great character arc on The Vampire Diaries Season 1 when she discovered she was a witch and learned how to use her powers. But after that, she was sidelined in favor of Elena and Caroline, the other two female leads.

Throughout the remainder of the show, Elena and Caroline continued to receive their own character arcs, but Bonnie never did. Bonnie was always used to further other character’s storylines, but she got nothing when it came to herself.

The writers pushed Bonnie around, abused her, and neglected her in favor of other white characters. So, while it may seem significant that The Vampire Diaries had a black woman as part of the main cast, they did not do an excellent job treating her as such.

As Vanessa Morgan said, black characters should have their own storylines, and they are worth so much more than a white character’s sidekick, especially if they are a part of the main cast.

One last television show where the CW tried, yet failed, was with their representation is Batwoman.

Taking a Risk - Batwoman Season 1 Episode 20
(Bettina Strauss/The CW)

Kate Kane is supposed to be a Jewish lesbian. The actress who portrays her should be Jewish, a person of color, or both. Furthermore, the casting choice should not appeal to a straight audience, and Ruby Rose was the complete opposite of that.

She is certainly not Jewish or a person of color. While she is a member of the LGBTQ+ community, fans were upset about the casting choice because Ruby Rose is the gay actress that straight audiences like, implying the CW cared more about their heterosexual viewers rather than their LGBTQ+ viewers.

But with her exit at the end of Batwoman Season 1, there is still hope, especially since the CW announced that Javicia Leslie, a black and LGBTQ+ actress. will play the titular role.

Javicia Leslie was everything we wanted for Kate Kane, but unfortunately, she will play a new Batwoman, a character named Ryan Wilder.

Kate Kane deserved better than what she got, but we hope that Ryan Wilder will do the show justice.

Chad Michael Murray and Hilarie Burton - One Tree Hill

It is critical to mention that the CW does have a couple of shows with proper representation. For example, Black Lightning features a black superhero as the main character. The show is all about black empowerment, and it even has an interracial sapphic relationship.

Another CW show that has good representation is The Flash. While there are some ups and downs about their diversity, the essential factor is that the leading lady is a black woman that gets her own storylines.

For the first time, the main character, a white superhero, has a black woman as their love interest. From The Flash Season 1 Episode 1, Barry and Iris have always been endgame.

It took some time for them to get together, but the show’s writers have made it clear time and again that Barry only ever had eyes for Iris. They were always going to end up together, no matter what.

While The Flash is not perfect, the show did a great job of highlighting the importance of Iris West as her own character and as the love of Barry’s life.

May They Live Happily Ever After - Supergirl Season 3 Episode 8
(Bettina Strauss/The CW)

But the few shows where the CW succeeded with representation is not enough. On a larger scale, the CW has got to better with diversity because, as of right now, their version of representation involves sidelining characters of color and LGBTQ+ relationships in favor of white characters and heterosexual relationships.

Not to mention that the queerbaiting takes the cake.

Over to you, Fanatics!

What do you think of the diversity on various CW shows? Do you think they missed the mark completely? Or do you think it is better to have some rather than none at all?

The best crossovers are often the most unexpected crossovers. They prove it's possible to overcome network rivalry and make grounded dramas a little more magical.

The post We Never Saw These TV Crossovers Coming, But They Changed Our Lives Forever appeared first on TV Fanatic.

Shows set in the same universe like Grey's Anatomy and Station 19, the Arrowverse, and One Chicago can frequently crossover.

Crossovers between shows airing on different networks or taking place in incompatible universes are harder to pull off.

Now and then some can cut through the red tape and pull off a mindblowing crossover between shows we never thought could crossover.

Crossover Collage
(The CW)

More then previous Arrowverse crossovers, Crisis On Infinite Earths had a lot to prove. It had to top the previous crossovers. It had to be as epic as the comic it took inspiration from.

Most of all, since Arrow was ending, it had to be a fitting swan song for Oliver Queen.

Great as it was seeing characters from all Arrowverse shows act together, those in charge of making Crisis on Infinite Earths rightly recognized this story needed to be bigger than just the Arrowverse.

They got characters from shows long over — Smallville, Birds of Prey, and Adam West's Batman — to make appearances.

Movie versions of Superman and The Flash showed up, which was surprising because tv verses are usually kept very separate from movie verses.

Lucifer seeing Constantine - The Flash
(The CW)

Best of all, Diggle and Mia accompanied Constantine on a journey to visit the Devil himself — Lucifer, as played by Tom Ellis.

Rumors of it leaked before The Flash Season 6 Episode 9, aired, but it didn't take away what it represented.

Crisis on Infinite Earths was epic enough to cross network lines. Also, even if we didn't know it, we needed to witness Lucifer mispronouncing Constantine's name.

Will the Arrowverse and Lucifer ever cross paths again? It's unknown, but knowing it could happen adds another layer of excitement and possibility to those shows.

My Dinner with Abed - Community
(NBC)

Lucifer isn't the only character who has made the perilous journey across network lines.

Community Season 2 Episode 9 mentioned Abed was watching Cougar Town.

Abed delivered a monologue about being an extra on Cougar Town on Community Season 2 Episode 19. It served as an unexpected vehicle for the exploration of Abed and Jeff's characters and as a payoff to the joke of Abed liking Cougar Town.

Only it wasn't the end of the connection between Community and Cougar Town.

On Community Season 2 Episode 24, Cougar Town actors Busy Philipps and Dan Byrd were spotted in the background of a crowd scene.

Then things really became meta on Cougar Town Season 2 Episode 21 when Danny Pudi, Abed's actor, could be seen sitting near Laurie and Travis until he suddenly makes a run for it.

Obviously (and delightfully), Pudi was playing Abed as an extra on Cougar Town.

These were only cameo appearances, but the crossover was amazing for a few reasons. It happened between two shows on rival networks. It showed the admiration both shows had for the other.

Plus, it was a prime example of how Community and Cougar Town go the extra mile to deliver payoffs to recurring jokes — making you appreciate both shows all the more.

Bones & Crane
(FOX)

Community and Cougar Town are very much distinct, unique shows, but they complement each other well.

Something I wouldn't think to apply to Bones and Sleepy Hollow until the two shows crossed over on Bones Season 11 Episode 5 and Sleepy Hollow Season 3 Episode 5.

Bones takes its share of artistic liberties, but it's a drama centered around using science to solve crimes. Introducing the supernatural would break the rules embedded into the show.

Meanwhile, the supernatural is crucial to Sleepy Hollow. It is, after all, a show about Ichabod Crane waking up in the 21st century to stave off the apocalypse.

How do Bones and Sleepy Hollow crossover without ruining the way their universes work?

When the Bones characters were involved, the crossover did a good job teasing the supernatural without actually revealing the supernatural (and without making Brennan and Booth look stupid for not putting the pieces together).

As fun as it was too see Brennan, Booth, Ichabod, and Abby figure a way out of an Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom-like trap, what makes the crossover special are the character moments.

Brennan and Ichabod debated magic versus science and the pros and cons of mixing work with pleasure.

Booth and Abby bonded over their shared feelings about their jobs and their respective relationships with Sheriff Corbin.

Compelling character dynamics can make even the most unlikely of crossovers work.

Abby and Booth - Bones
(FOX)

The only thing wilder than a crossover between a supernatural show and a non-supernatural show is a crossover between a live-action show and an animated show.

Supernatural proved it was up for the challenge when it crossed over with Scooby-Doo on Supernatural Season 13 Episode 16.

Supernatural balanced both the absurdity of Sam and Dean getting pulled into a Scooby-Doo episode and how freaking awesome it was for the out-of-the-blue (even for them) thing to happen.

It's an intriguing episode because it challenges the characters from both shows. Dean, Sam, and Cas need to adapt to being animated.

Dean teams up with Daphne - Supernatural
(The CW)

The Scooby gang gets confronted with heavier subject matter — like their mortality — than they're used to dealing with while solving mysteries.

It was also a hilarious and affectionate Scooby-Doo tribute.

The risk of doing a crossover with Scooby-Doo paid off for Supernatural.

What could have been a disaster made for a great TV episode and demonstrated how a live-action show could go animated without losing its identity.

TV shows come and go, but one thing remains the same – the crucial need for more sapphic relationships in genre television. Find out why inside.

The post Why We Need More Sapphic Relationships on Genre Shows appeared first on TV Fanatic.

]]>
Those of us who watch genre shows understand the importance of needing an escape when real life gets too crazy.

We live for those few hours a week where we can just sit back, relax, and let the stress from our lives melt away with a new adventure.

Genre shows have always provided that outlet for anyone who needs to get away.

Canon & Non-Canon Sapphic Relationships
(ABC, CW, Hulu)

But lately, it hasn't been enough. There seems to be something missing. Genre shows have great characters and intriguing plots, but their dynamics haven't been up to par.

It's not specifically the dynamics themselves, but rather, their lack of representation.

We just can't help but notice there are plenty of romances between those of the opposite sex, and even several between two men.

But there are very few for sapphic women. We don't even get confirmation that some of these women might be bisexual. They're just presumed to be straight.

Female Characters People Headcanon as LGBTQ+
(ABC, CW)

And yet, headcanons thrive on many female characters being LGBTQ+ or relationships between women to be romantic.

There's a reason why there are so many fanon sapphic relationships – TV viewers want to see them played out in front of their eyes.

They want to watch women make the transition from friends, enemies, co-workers, whatever they may be, into romantic partners — all while on a swashbuckling adventure.

Sapphic relationships have broken more ground in contemporary real-world shows, but it isn't the same.

Genre TV is the most promising for interesting storylines and complex dynamics. It gives promising sapphic relationships their best chance for quality development.

Genre shows these days usually have a perfect sapphic pairing to make canon, and yet, they never take the leap.

Take Once Upon a Time, for example. Emma Swan and Regina Mills were one of fanon's biggest couples, and for good reason. They had amazing potential for one of the most classic tropes – enemies to friends to lovers.

Regina vs. Emma
(ABC/JACK ROWAND)

And let's face it, we all know that if either Emma or Regina were a man, they would have been canon. I mean, come on, they even share a son and built a solid relationship between them and with their son, Henry.

In the end, Once Upon a Time was just one of those shows that presented the best dynamics between women, but fell short of giving them (and their viewers) LGBTQ+ happy endings (it was only in the last season where they had a prominent canon relationship between two women).

We can't forget one of the most popular fanon femslash ships – Kara Danvers and Lena Luthor from Supergirl, dubbed by fans as SuperCorp.

Lena and Kara - Supergirl Season 5 Episode 13
(Katie Yu/The CW)

From Lena's first appearance, sparks flew between the two women.

It isn't even only from the audience's imagination; there's plenty of subtext between the two characters. But clearly, the writers of Supergirl only have plans to bait SuperCorp fans.

But there's still Alex Danvers – who's currently dating Kelly Olsen.

Kelly and Alex - Supergirl Season 5 Episode 14
(Sergei Bachlakov/The CW)

So why is SuperCorp important, especially since Alex and Kelly also have the benefit of racial representation in addition to sapphic representation?

Because neither Alex nor Kelly are the show's leads. Viewers want to see Kara killing it as a badass feminist superhero, and then have her come home to a girlfriend.

Or at least have it canon that she's interested in women.

Supergirl planted the seed for Kara and Lena. They watered it very little and gave it minimal sunlight, but they were never truly given a chance to grow.

Then there's Legacies. At least the show has canon LGBTQ+ characters.

Recently, they revealed that Hope Mikaelson had a crush on Josie Saltzman, making the lead of the show a canon bisexual.

And Josie Saltzman has been openly bisexual since the very beginning of the show.

She even had a tumultuous relationship with Penelope Park during Legacies Season 1.

But Legacies hasn't connected the dots between Hope and Josie.

At one point, they each had a crush on the other, but they were only ever friends. They even both liked Landon in the first half of Legacies Season 2 before he ultimately chose Josie.

Imagine how powerful this relationship could be. All this wasted potential on an overplayed love triangle trope — two friends fighting for the same boy. Boring.

But two best friends realizing they have feelings for each other? Now we're talking!

Getting Pulled Back - Legacies
(Mark Hill/The CW)

Of course, we shouldn't take sapphic representation for granted. There are a few genre TV shows that do have the representation — but it's often at a price.

Take Thundergrace for example — the relationship between Anissa Pierce and Grace Choi on the CW's Black Lightning.

They're the representation we wanted, but just like with Alex and Kelly, neither Anissa nor Grace are the show's leads.

Furthermore, they cannot be considered the show's main couple, especially when so many of their relationship milestones are left out.

Engaged - Black Lightning Season 3 Episode 16
(Annette Brown/The CW)

There's Nico Minoru and Karolina Dean from Marvel's Runaways. Both of them were leads, and together, known as Deanoru, they made up the main romance.

But the show was cut short. After only three seasons, consisting of 33 episodes in total, Marvel's Runaways ended.

One show that comes to mind where a sapphic relationship is not only the main couple but also, one of the characters plays the lead, is in the CW's Batwoman.

But yet again, this show falls short. While the representation is, for the most part, positive, it's like the casting director of the show just chose Hollywood's token lesbian to play Kate Kane/Batwoman, wanting to appeal to straight viewers rather than LGBTQ+ viewers.

And then there's the fact that Kate Kane is supposed to be Jewish, which Ruby Rose, isn't.

Sapphic representation cannot truly be good if the character and/or relationship falls short in ethnic or racial representation.

Secret No More - Batwoman Season 1 Episode 2
(Jeffery Garland/The CW)

In short, it's not enough. We may seem picky in what we look for — but LGBTQ+ viewers just want wholesome representation when it comes to sapphic relationships on genre television.

We want to watch Emma Swan fight villains, and then come home to Regina Mills, the ultimate example of villain-turned-hero.

We want to see Kara Danvers and Lena Luthor fall in love without being baited into watching. We want more screentime for Alex Danvers and Kelly Olsen.

We want Anissa Pierce and Grace Choi to have a spin-off show, focused on them. We want Marvel's Runaways to have at least three more seasons.

And of course, we want casting directors to make wise casting choices, and follow a character's ethnic origins.

First Appearance of Batwoman Season 1 Episode 1
(Kimberley French/CW)

We shouldn't take the LGBTQ+ representation on television these days for granted, but we can also do better. Especially when it comes to genre television.

We still crave for the 'L' and/or 'B' part of the acronym on our screens.

So what do you think, TV Fanatics?

Do you think genre TV shows could use more sapphic relationships? Or do you think other television shows need the representation more?

Leave us your thoughts in the comments below!

Black Lightning faces off against Gravedigger on Black Lightning Season 3 Episode 16. Will Jefferson stop this powerful enemy? Read on to find out.

It's the battle we've all been waiting for: Black Lightning vs. Gravedigger! The titans of the Markovian war met on the battlefield to settle the score on Black Lightning Season 3 Episode 16.

After weeks of political occupation and metahuman kidnappings, a victor stands tall. It's been a hard-fought battle with many casualties along the way. Freeland will never be the same again.

The Gravedigger fight marked a thrilling end for Black Lightning Season 3.

Clearing Their Names - Black Lightning Season 3 Episode 16
(Bob Mahoney/The CW)

Gravedigger seemed like an impossible force to defeat, and in a way, he still is. His collection of metahuman abilities made him stronger than anyone he could face, especially Black Lightning.

In a matter of seconds, Gravedigger could incapacitate anyone. Lightning, Brandon, Grace, nameless alleyway folks … no one was safe.

I love that the show created an enemy who proved to be a worthy match against the Pierces. A tough foil who they could band together against to stop.

Don't get me wrong, Tobias and Lala are great; their personalities pull you in and they have all the fun flair. However, a never-ending onslaught from a powerful metahuman is the type of villain that delivers a super-charged fight.

Black Lightning vs. Gravedigger's battle was electric!

Hostage of War - Black Lightning Season 3 Episode 16
(Bob Mahoney/The CW)

Though, his grandstanding needs to be stopped. (We get it! You're mad at the government for what they did to you and you want to kidnap metahumans.)

Gravedigger loves to hear the sound of his voice at this point.

Also, Jennifer was completely right in her argument against him. Gravedigger was talking nothing but nonsense with his narrow and hurt vision of the world. His debate might've won some soldiers to his side, but that wasn't going to work with people like Jennifer or Anissa.

Gravedigger: I can’t believe you got up! But you can’t do it, can you? You can’t kill for blood, right?

Black Lightning: You and I are blood.

Gravedigger: That’s funny.

🔗 permalink: You and I are blood.

Side-note: If Gravedigger has the temporary ability to control minds/actions, why doesn't he use that to get people to join his side or easily defeat them?

His ego would love that type of power, and he used his power to cause Grace to fight Anissa. However, he didn't use it to control Jennifer, stop Black Lightning, or get the information he needed from people without killing them.

Gravedigger is not using his powers to the best of his abilities.

Clear Mind, Clear Senses - Black Lightning Season 3 Episode 16
(Bob Mahoney/The CW)

Are you surprised that Gravedigger survived the explosion?

I am. He seemed like a goner once Agent Odell triggered the self-destruct function and Lynn/Jefferson left him behind. They barely gave him any time to run.

Gravedigger's chances were low; he should've roasted within that explosion.

One of his powers must've given him the ability to survive a heated blast like that. An explosion of that magnitude is not something easily avoided.

With his return, maybe we'll see him on Black Lightning Season 4? He's a loose end, and since he knows that Jefferson is his nephew, he might want to explore that family connection. Sure, he's still a villain, but there's no way he'll be in hiding for too long.

Another prediction I had gotten wrong was Grace's death. A coma is close, but it's not the right answer, so this point will be conceded to you all.

When Gravedigger had told Grace to kill Thunder, those odds increased since it seemed like she would stop at nothing until the job was done. And Thunder wouldn't just sit back to be killed; she would do something to protect herself.

It's understandable why Thunder had to take action. The breath blast was a defense mechanism to protect herself.

Anissa: Look, so what’s your assessment?

Lynn: She’s in a coma. I’m sorry, Hunny, but you know how this goes. It could be 10 minutes or it could be 10 years. And there’s no data on how the shapeshifting might affect it.

Anissa: Come on, come on, come on! There’s gotta be something you can do?

Lynn: She needs to be someplace where she can have constant care. And we can pray.

🔗 permalink: She’s in a coma.

Hopefully, Grace will wake up from her coma. They just got engaged and wanted to be together; they are so close to living a happy life! We can't have them separated for too long.

Though, let's cross our fingers that Anissa doesn't do any shenanigans and flirting with someone else while Grace is away. Anissa turned over a new leaf and is on the path for better development. She shouldn't slide back into bad habits just because her true love is in a coma.

Rising Forces - Black Lightning Season 3 Episode 16
(Annette Brown/The CW)

Henderson's death wasn't that big of a surprise, especially since the actor had revealed they were leaving the series. However, it was still a heartbreaking moment.

The character served as a moral figure in Freeland, and he did everything he could to protect the town's citizens. His story during Black Lightning Season 3 focused on his struggle between saving Freeland while balancing the noble line. He tried to be the protector when Black Lightning couldn't.

Plus, he's Jefferson's best friend, so it's sad to lose that friendship on the show!

If Henderson had to go out, this was the way to do it. Protecting the people he cared about and fighting against evil was his noble farewell. And he got to say goodbye to his best friend one last time.

He is leaving the series a hero.

Facing The Villain - Black Lightning Season 3 Episode 16
(Bob Mahoney/The CW)

Who else is happy that Khalil got back control of his mind?

The inner struggle against Painkiller had weighed on him ever since he regained consciousness. The assassin held firm control for a while and it seemed like the villain was here to stay.

Thankfully, we're back to having anti-hero Khalil around. We couldn't go another season of evil Painkiller; it's been done to death having him conduct evil crimes for crime bosses, like Tobias or Agent Odell. Khalil should use this newfound freedom to work on himself and find peace.

Agent Odell: [Sighs.]

Khalil: Now, you didn’t really think I would let you get away after making me kill my mom, did you?

[Agent Odell utters trigger phrase]

Khalil: That shutdown only works for Painkiller. I’m Khalil.

[Reloads gun]

Khalil: We haven’t officially met.

🔗 permalink: That shutdown only works for Painkiller. I’m Khalil.

His fight against Painkiller was a tough battle. They used their knowledge of sword-fighting and combat to attack each other. It's a very Khalil thing to do since he has brought up martial arts in the past.

Though, the slow-motion treatment should've been removed. It looked too fuzzy and was somewhat headache-inducing.

Victims of War - Black Lightning Season 3 Episode 16
(Annette Brown/The CW)

Agent Odell's cleanup mission would've worked had he just skipped town earlier. Waiting in the same town as the war until the last possible minute wasn't the smartest decision.

He literally sent all his troops to do his dirty work. Odell didn't need to stick around Freeland any longer, especially since many of them were getting the job done.

In the span of his cleanup crew mission, we lost Dr. Jace, Commander Williams, Major Grey, Lady Eve's henchmen, and plenty of nameless ASA guards.

Beyond the briefcase, there were no other connections that could've tied him together. Except, of course, for Lady Eve's and The Outsiders' testimony. Even then, he would've evaded their capture with his resources.

The ASA's Past - Black Lightning Season 3 Episode 16
(Bob Mahoney/The CW)

Agent Odell cleaned up without lifting a finger himself. He's one of the more efficient villains that Black Lightning has ever had.

I'm not sad to see him go. We've waited two seasons for karmic justice to deliver a swift hammer against him. He deserves everything bad coming his way; the betrayals, kidnapping, torture, murder, and drugging has piled on the need for retribution!

Major Grey: Mr. Gambi, we know you’re in here. We know you have the briefcase.

Gambi: I can’t help but you have your most trusted commandos with you.

Major Grey: Showing off that you’re in our personnel files, tailor? Brag much!

Gambi: Thank you for bringing me the last ASA agents who know the Pierce family secrets.

Major Grey: You’re welcome! They all know you very well. You’re not getting out of here.

Gambi: I’ve seen worse.

[Gambi unleashes bullets from a machine gun]

🔗 permalink: I’ve seen worse.

Agent Odell is finally getting his punishment! Even if we see his future trial or not, at least justice is being made.

Plus, the ASA is no more, so we will never have to deal with that plot ever again. The occupation was an intense ride, but let the past stay in the past now.

Looking To The Future - Black Lightning Season 3 Episode 16
(Annette Brown/The CW)

Last Thoughts Lightning Round:

 • Did anyone else forget about Jamila? She barely appeared after she became Truthteller and then she randomly showed up here.

 • Black Lightning loves making references about Gotham City. Could this be a hint for more crossovers between this series and Batwoman?

 • Seriously, Lynn? You're still taking Green Light?! I can't. I just can't with you right now.

 • Anissa having to leave Grace behind was so heartbreaking. You could feel her pain as she had to complete the mission.

 • Once again, Lala comes through when it benefits him the most. You gotta give him and Lady Eve some kudos; they follow their survival instincts and do whatever it takes to persevere.

 • I do not envy the bill Gambi will face as he has to repair the tailor shop AND the lab. The ASA forces did some damage.

 • Is the Markovia mission where Tobias has been all this time? It seems weird that The Outsiders would've let him skip town for any reason.
