Shows about high school are like the ultimate comfort food for many of us.

Most of us agree that watching others’ high school experiences on the small screen provides a unique form of nostalgia and often even catharsis.

That’s why we at TV Fanatic want to share our favorite shows that help us revisit our high school years.

Beverly Hills, 90210 (Paramount+)

If “Donna Martin Graduates!” and chowing down on pies and burgers at the Peach Pit mean anything to you, you already know there was something incredibly special about Beverly Hills, 90210 (1990-2000).

The show about twin teens relocating from Minnesota to Beverly Hills and dealing with culture shock was so popular that it launched multiple spinoffs and reboots, including BH 90210 (2019), and inspired all the teen dramas that have come since.

Early on, it was obvious that this FOX show was setting out to give us a real look at teenage life and thus let us relive high school in a new and more in-depth way than any shows that came before it.

Related: The 10 Best Reboots We’ve Ever Seen

We went through it all with the gang from Beverly Hills, 90210, from Dylan (Luke Perry) as an alcoholic with abandonment issues to Steve (Ian Ziering) and his infamous legacy key shenanigans.

The core group of friends changed slightly over the years, but the concept remained unchanged. Their lives were often complicated, dramatic, and frequently unbelievable, but their friendships held them together through it all.

They buried a time capsule in one episode, but they also became a time capsule themselves, and rewatching their decade-long adventures is like stepping through a mirror back into our younger selves for those of us who grew up in the ’90s.

Dawson’s Creek (Hulu)

(WB/CW Screenshot)

Dawson’s Creek (1998-2003), at its core, was a tale of two loves. Well, more loves than that, but two central loves.

There was the love between Joey Potter (Katie Holmes) and childhood buddy Dawson Leery (James Van Der Beek), and then there was the love between Joey and Pacey Witter (Joshua Jackson), which came later.

The high school love triangle made us all hold our breath. For five years, we wondered whether Joey would choose Pacey, Dawson, or neither.

Meanwhile, the show also gave us one of the most monumental moments in TV history when Jack and Ethan, as a gay couple, shared a romantic kiss and many other great moments.

It may have been more than a bit whitewashed, and it has taken flack for this over the years. However, it still did a great job in other areas, such as candidly covering subjects like inappropriate student-teacher relations, religious disagreements, and parental affairs.

The original Paula Cole theme song for the show was right. We didn’t want to wait for our lives to be over. We wanted to relive high school right then and watch Joey, Pacey, and the rest of the gangs’ lives unfold.

Saved By the Bell (Roku)

Zack smiles as he plots a new scam. - Saved By the Bell - NBC - Peacock Promo Screenshot
(NBC/Screenshot)

Strictly speaking, we first got to know Zack Morris (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) on Disney when he appeared on the series Good Morning Miss Bliss in 1988. The show was moved to NBC, rebranded Saved By the Bell the next year, and finished its original run in 1992.

Regardless of what it was called, Zack and his friends were unforgettable from day one, with their totally ’80s/’90s fashions, quirky personalities, and weekly zany antics.

But Zack’s constant attempts to outwit Principal Belding (Dennis Haskins) often made for the most laughs.

Related: 17 TV Characters That Make Us LOL

From subliminal advertising techniques to stealing spaghetti sauce recipes, Zack was always out to avoid school work while preferably making easy money.

The show was just funny, and it gave us a break from our own high school lives.

After the original came The College Years and The New Class, Saved By the Bell movies, and eventually the Peacock reboot (2020-2021), but the first series was really the best.

Boy Meets World (Disney+)

The Gang Says Goodbye to Mr. Feeney in the Boy Meets World Finale - ABC Screenshot
(ABC/Screenshot)

The ’90s brought us many funny sitcoms, and Boy Meets World (1993-2000) was one of them.

The show about a high school kid making his way into adulthood with his friends and family backing him up was downright cheesy at times.

Yet, it perfectly captured the relationship between students and “that one teacher” many of us have in life who is more of a life guide.

Mr. Feeney (William Daniels) was clearly not in it for the paycheck. He almost became an extra dad to the Boy Meets World crew, especially Corey and Shawn (Ben Savage and Rider Strong).

If you had your own Feeney, Boy Meets World is one of those shows about high school that will definitely tug at your heart and bring fond memories flooding back.

That’s why fans of the show were so excited to see Corey back again and taking on a semi-Feeney-like role on Girl Meets World (2014-2017).

Switched at Birth (Hulu)

Daphne Vasquez (Katie Leclerc) and Emmett Bledsoe (Sean Berdy) get on Emmett's motorcycle and prepare to leave the house. - Switched at Birth Freeform Promo Screenshot
(Freeform/Screenshot)

Few high school shows have weirder twists than Switched at Birth (2011-2017).

What happens when you find out you were switched at birth, move in with your biological family, have to find a way to get along with the girl who took your place for years, and, oh yeah, you’re deaf?

That’s the question it asked, as it fed our appetites for romantic kisses and teen drama while imparting lessons about deaf culture to help us learn what deaf teens have to deal with daily.

Related: 23 Best First Kisses of All Time

We were even treated to two high schools full of drama for the price of one.

Daphne (Katie Leclerc) attended Carlton School for the Deaf, but Bay (Vanessa Marano) went to Buckner Hall, at least until Daphne’s birth parents decided to try enrolling her in classes at Buckner, too.

Later, the tables were turned when both girls wound up at Carlton.

For us hearing fans of the show, we still related because we knew exactly what it was like to be teens and have curveballs thrown at you all the time, just not those exact curveballs.

Riverdale (Netflix)

The Gang Sitting Together - Riverdale CW Promo Screenshot
(CW/Screenshot)

Almost 30 years after the premiere of Beverly Hills, 90210 came Riverdale (2017-2023), which coincidentally also starred Luke Perry until his untimely death in 2019.

For original 90210 fans, his presence on Riverdale definitely brought back the high school nostalgia, but that’s far from all the show has going for it.

Riverdale is fun to watch for all ages because it has touches of style from different decades, combining past and present.

Pops’ Chock’lit Shoppe, for example, has a ’50s diner vibe and feels like a direct nod to 90210’s Peach Pit diner.

Watching Riverdale makes it feel like viewers are actually walking the high school halls with its teen characters.

If the high school nostalgia factor isn’t enough, Riverdale also brings the spook with its intriguing and often creepy mysteries.

The O.C. (Hulu)

Ryan in Jail Meeting Sandy Cohen - The O.C. Fox Screenshot
(Fox/Screenshot)

It’s time to listen to some great live tunes at The Crab Shack because we’re moving on to The O.C (2003-2007).

Dawson’s Creek was ending just as this little gem about the teens of Newport Beach was kicking off, but there were some parallels between the two.

The O.C. is yet another show from before smart technology was all the rage, which gives it a nostalgia factor of about 5,000 for many of us who grew up in the good old analog days.

Related: 17 Shows That Aged Like Fine Wine

Occasional out-of-control storylines, like Luke (Chris Carmack) sleeping with Marissa’s (Mischa Barton) mom, aside, the teens on the show could be a little pretentious, but they were always relatable.

They got each other through classism, academic stress, bullying, and a whole lot more.

The O.C. also did a great job of portraying parents on the show, making it enjoyable for both teens and adults to watch at the time and allowing many of us to rewatch it fondly with both perspectives in mind.

With its sharp humor and heartfelt moments, Never Have I Ever offers a relatable and entertaining glimpse into the trials of teenage life.

The TV world mourns the loss of a talented actress, author, and director as news broke of the passing of Shannen Doherty after several years of battling cancer.

If you grew up in the ’90s, you might recognize Shannen from the teen coming-of-age drama Beverly Hills, 90210 as Brenda Walsh. But for this viewer, she was another claim to fame for our fair city of Memphis. Greatness grows in the 901 of Tennessee.

While Beverly Hills, 90210 might have given Doherty her biggest acting break, she didn’t stop there once her career took off. We’re here to remember the magic left behind by Shannen’s forty years in the filming industry with this Shannen Doherty career retrospective.

Shannen Doherty Career Retrospective

Shannen Doherty may have been born in the M, but she moved to LA at the tender age of seven, which led to her scoring several smaller gigs before finding success in roles that launched her career.

Related: Shannen Doherty Remembered by Family and Colleagues

Her charm and talents helped her get her first shot at acting in Father Murphy, a two-year family western-style series where Shannen played in two episodes. It gave her the cred to get her first big recurring role in our favorite book-turned-TV series.

Little House on the Prairie

(NBC (YouTube Screenshot))

Before the success of book to film adaptations like Harry Potter and 50 Shades of Grey, TV execs got inspiration from anthology books like Little House on the Prairie.

The TV adaptation of the book featured our beloved Doherty as the cheerful and strong-willed Jenny Wilder in the series’ ninth and last season, which consisted of 18 episodes. She reprised the role in three TV movies made after the series ended.

Headliners Michael Landon (Charles Ingalls) and Karen Grassle (Caroline Quiner Ingalls) left the show after the eighth season, making the ninth season technically a series sequel named Little House: A New Beginning.

Our House

After her success on Little House on the Prairie, Shannen did some random one-off appearances on various TV shows and movies for several years before scoring her next recurring role as Kris Witherspoon on Our House.

Shannen Doherty played in Our House as a grieving teenager experiencing the upheavals of a changing life.
(NBC (YouTube Screenshot))

Fans spent two seasons appreciating the acting chops of a young Shannen as she and her two siblings moved with their mother to live with their paternal grandfather after her father’s death.

She excelled at the role of a coming-of-age preteen struggling with drastic life changes, like a deceased father, a mother recently jumping back into the dating pool, a new school and home, and living with a grandfather she barely knows.

Heathers

Among Doherty’s many movie appearances, she had roles in several popular classics, including Heathers. Shannen played Heather Duke, a member of the popular high school clique at Westerburg High.

Among big names like Christian Slater and Winona Ryder, Doherty and her friends, all named Heather, rule the school as the clique everyone wants to belong to and hates if they don’t.

Shannen Doherty plays as Heather Duke in the '80s cult classic film, Heathers, about a group of clique popular girls named Heather.
(New World Pictures (YouTube Screenshot))

Heather was the perfect role for Shannen to portray, breaking her out of the role of the sweet, curious young girl and putting her on the path to landing some of her most successful roles as a young woman.

Years later, Shannen joined the single season Heathers TV series remake for three episodes. She played Dr. Destiny, the mother of JD, the head jock of the It group.

Beverly Hills, 90210

Brenda Walsh was Doherty’s biggest breakout role, putting her on the map for all generations. Beverly Hills, 90210 is one of those series that takes you back to the amazing times of the last century when things were so much simpler.

Shannen Doherty played Brenda Walsh on the wildly popular '90s teen drama Beverly Hills, 90210
(Fox (YouTube Screenshot))

Not that the crew from the 90210 would agree that things were easy. The coming-of-age drama was full of teen angst, relationship hardships, and friendship frustrations. It captured everything about the teen years for the nation to love.

Brenda was part of a Beverly Hills group of eight high school friends exploring the complexities of young adulthood. During the four years and 111 episodes where Doherty played Walsh, her character had an on-and-off relationship with Dylan McKay, played by the late Luke Perry (Riverdale).

Related: TV’s Most Complicated Father-Son Relationships

Beverly Hills, 90210 jumpstarted numerous careers of the young up-and-coming celebrities of the ’90s, including Shannen’s on-screen twin brother, Brandon, played by Jason Priestley. Other names included Tori Spelling, Brian Austin Green, Jenny Garth, Ian Ziering, and Gabrielle Carteris.

Amid the many nostalgic reboots, The CW launched the remake, titled simply 90210, which did not have as much success as its predecessor. During the reboot, Shannen delighted us as she returned as Brenda for seven of the 114 episodes.

Beverly Hills, 90210 was such a big hit that it even inspired a single-season spinoff, BH90210, about the original seven cast members working on a reboot in an exaggerated reality show setting.

Everyone was as themselves considering resuming their previous 90210 identities, including Doherty as Brenda.

Mallrats

In the ’90s, hanging out at the mall was the thing to do if you wanted to look cool. Those who spent all their free time at the mall came to be known as mall rats.

Comedic genius Kevin Smith decided to create a movie portraying this generation of adolescents and Shannen made the perfect ex-girlfriend of Brodie (played by Jason Lee), Rene.

(Universal Pictures (YouTube Screenshot))

A melting pot of who’s who, Mallrats was a stepping stone for many stars, including the comedy duo Clerks royalty Jay and Silent Bob, played by Jason Mewes and Kevin James. It also featured Ben Affleck, Joey Lauren Adams, and Jeremy London as Quint, as the second male main character.

Young adult audiences loved the slapstick comedy and the unique humor of the best friends as they take refuge in a mall with a ragtag group of friends after getting dumped by their girlfriends.

Charmed

While 90210 was Shannen’s foray into coming-of-age teen dramas, her next largest recurring role caught the interest of a broader audience of supernatural fanatics.

Shannen Doherty plays Prue Halliwell, one of three magical witch sisters who protect the world from evil
(The WB (YouTube Screenshot))

Doherty spent three seasons and 67 episodes playing the role of Prue Halliwell, one of three charmed sister witches who spent their lives protecting the world from evil forces using the Power of Three.

Shannon’s character got killed off at the end of the third season, leaving the show to fill her role with a new sister, played by Rose McGowan, for the remainder of the broadcast.

Doherty addressed her problematic attitude with those she worked with — including her on-screen sisters, Piper and Phoebe, played by Holly Marie Combs and Alyssa Milano — in her 2010 book, “Badass: A Hard-Earned Guide to Living Life with Style and (the Right) Attitude.”

North Shore

Shannen did a short stint of the briefly running romantic drama North Shore for eleven of the show’s 21 episodes. Her role was Alexandra, one of the beautiful, rich, and famous in Hawaii.

Shannen’s character was a snarky bitch estranged sister of Nicole Booth, played by Brooke Burns.

Shannen Doherty plays on North Shore as a rich entitled female visiting her equally entitled rich sister in Hawaii.

The Fox network hoped bringing Shannen onto the show would help save its fledging ratings, despite a cast of beautiful people, like Kristoffer Polaha, Corey Sevier, Christopher McDonald (Happy Gilmore), Dominic Percell (Prison Break), and Jason Momoa (Aquaman).

Unfortunately, her contributions were not enough to extend the show past a single season.

Made for TV Movies

When Shannen wasn’t playing recurring roles on the series, fans enjoyed her talents in several Hollywood films and made-for-TV movies.

As with many TV celebrities, Doherty did several TV film Christmas movies during her career. In Christmas Caper, Cate Dove is a criminal thief who returns to her hometown at Christmas time to lay low and hide from the cops.

But with the Christmas spirit in full effect, combined with the magic of family, Cate changes her naughty ways just in time to make it a Christmas miracle.

Another Christmas movie that featured Doherty in a Christmas capacity was All I Want for Christmas. She is Brenda Patterson, the mother of a young boy who makes the Christmas wish of having different parents for the holiday.

But once his wish comes true, he wonders if it’s worth all that he’s lost. His new version of parents and life isn’t all he’s expected.

Other than Christmas films, other TV movies include His & Hers (1984), Freeze Frame, Obsessed, A Burning Passion: The Margaret Mitchell Story, Sleeping with the Devil, Another Day, Hell on Heels: The Battle of Mary Kay, Kiss Me Deadly, No One Would Tell, and List of a Lifetime.

Shannen Doherty Single Time Appearances

Like most stars, Doherty appeared on various TV series on a one-off basis. We saw her on classic shows like Voyagers!, Magnum, P.I., Highway to Heaven, The New Leave it to Beaver, 21 Jump Street, Rebel Highway, and Riverdale.

Shannen Doherty played a short role in The CW's popular series Riverdale.

It’s always fun when you know a celebrity so well that you can spot them in cameo roles on random shows in simple roles.

Shannen’s first cameo was in 1992 on a largely unknown TV series, Parker Lewis Can’t Lose. She played herself again in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back in 2001.

She also loved popping up in music videos like Slaughter and The Bellamy Brothers. She has a few uncredited roles, like Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult and Love, Inc.

Gone But Eternally Glorified in Everything

While Shannen may no longer be here, fans will continue to remember her in spirit and with all of her work.

We are just weeks away from the debut of Dancing With the Stars Season 30, and more new cast members have been revealed.

Per TMZ, Brian Austin Green is the latest addition to the cast.

The Beverly Hills, 90210 is set to be officially announced as a cast member on GMA next week, alongside the rest of the cast.

But, thanks to TMZ, we can shed light on some more names attached to the reality series.

Lori Loughlin's daughter, Olivia Jade, who was embroiled in the college admissions scandal, is set to star on the series.

The Real Housewives of Atlanta veteran Kenya Moore, is set to join the cast, and it's no surprise.

DWTS loves reality TV stars because producers like the younger demographic those shows pull in.

Moore should be a fun new addition to the show, so we're definitely rooting for her.

NBA Baller Imam Shumpert is also set to join the cast, according to the outlet.

The above cast members join the officially announced JoJo Siwa and USA gymnast Suni Lee, meaning we know just under half the cast so far.

Alas, any of the above could change between now and the official announcement, as well as between the official announcement and premiere date.

COVID-19 has made the TV industry very unpredictable.

News of Siwa and Lee's involvement broke last month during ABC's TCA panel.

"I am so excited about this. I think a lot of people are going to be excited about this," host Tyra Banks said of the news.

"I think it's going to save lives. It's going to change lives. It's going to make a lot of noise and the noise that needs to be made."

"For the first time ever, we're going to have a same-sex couple on the show," executive producer Andrew Llinares revealed.

"JoJo is going to be paired with a female pro dancer, who will be revealed on the premiere. We are so, so excited that JoJo, you're doing this, and for everyone to experience it."

Siwa then opened up about the exciting announcement.

"I think it breaks a wall that's never been broken down before," she said.

"I think it's really special that, not only now do I get to share with the world that you're going to love who you want to love, but also you can dance with who you want to dance with."

"There are a lot of barriers we're going to have to break through. Who leads? How do you dress? What shoes do you wear?" she continued.

"It's all something that I'm looking forward to and doing something that's never been done before. It's going to be tricky but it's going to give so much to people out there."

"People of the LGBTQ community, everyone. People who feel just a little different. It's going to give them a sense of, 'Wait a second? A girl can dance with a girl?' Obviously, why not? I think that's really special that I get to do that on this show. I'm so excited."

Luke Perry's former Beverly Hills, 90210 costars paid tribute to the late actor on what would have been his 54th birthday.

Stars of the FOX hit took to social media Sunday to lead the tributes to their friend Perry, who passed away at 52 on March 4, 2019, after suffering a stroke.

Perry portrayed Dylan McKay on the teen drama for most of its 10-year-run, taking a break between 1995 and 1998.

"Happy Birthday brother!! Love You ❤️," Brian Austin Green shared on Instagram with a throwback photo of himself and Perry.

Green shared another photo, which he described as the last photo Perry ever texted him.

"This has been a really hard day but you positively touched everyone you ever met," Green wrote.

"I love and miss you brother."

Green also spoke about his time with Perry on the show's official podcast on Sunday.

"He was an inspiration for me of just who he was and the choices he would make and how he would handle situations," Green said.

"And he's still very much a voice of conscience for me. He just so led by example that it shifts your way of looking at the world and appreciating the things that are around you.

"It was amazing for me after had passed of hearing all the stories of things he had done for people and never spoken about."

"Lazy Sunday with family… some downtime today gives me a pause for reflection. Grateful to my family and extended family. Loving on them hard right now," said Tori Spelling.

"And, doesn’t feel right not to mention that today is our brother Luke’s bday," she added.

"Thinking about him and missing him. But, that’s everyday. So grateful he got to meet my littlest Beau and snuggle him when he was a babe. #sunday #familyday#familyiswhatyoucreate#loveeverymoment ❤️."

Jennie Garth went for a black-and-white photo with the following caption:

Jason Priestley has opened up about his friend and BH90210 co-star Shannen Doherty's cancer diagnosis.

The actor was recently interviewed by People, and is "heartbroken" over the diagnosis.

“I reached out to her yesterday when the news broke,” he told the outlet at Monte Carlo Television Festival 60th Anniversary Celebration on Wednesday.

“She’s overwhelmed with well wishers and with people reaching out to her. I haven’t heard back from her yet, but I’m sure that I will very soon.”

Priestley starred alongside Doherty on the original Beverly Hills, 90210. The pair played twins, Brandon and Brenda Walsh.

They returned to the Beverly Hills, 90210 world for a weird reboot in 2019 that focused on the actors playing heightened versions of themselves as they try to get a revival of the series off the air.

Despite decent ratings, FOX canceled it after one season, meaning that fans will never know what becomes of the revival.

“Shannen was a big part of my life,” he continued to People.

“Shannen and I will always have a bond that is very meaningful. I’m very heartbroken about the news and I wish her and her family the best in this very difficult time.”

“It’s going to come out in a matter of days or a week that I’m stage 4. So my cancer came back, and that’s why I’m here,” Doherty revealed during an interview with ABC News on Good Morning America.

“I don’t think I’ve processed it. It’s a bitter pill to swallow in a lot of ways.”

“I definitely have days where I say, ‘Why me?’ ” said the actress of the diagnosis.

“And then I go, well, ‘Why not me? Who else? Who else besides me deserves this?’ None of us do.”

Shannen Doherty revealed Tuesday morning during an emotional interview that she is battling stage 4 cancer.

The beloved actress appeared on Good Morning America, and revealed the news, several years after finishing treatment for breast cancer.

The Beverly Hills, 90210 alum revealed that she had been privately living with cancer again over the past year.

The 48-year-old did not reveal what type of cancer she had.

"I don't think that I've processed it," Doherty alum told Good Morning America's Amy Robach.

"It's a bitter pill to swallow in a lot of ways. I definitely have days where I say, 'Why me?' And then I go, 'Well, why not me? Who else besides me deserves this?' None of us do."

Doherty decided to come forward with her diagnosis because she is in a lawsuit against State Farm over claims she was forced to pay out of her pocket after her house was damaged in the 2018 Woolsey fire.

Legal documents would soon be made available that would mention her cancer. The actress wanted the news to come from her.

"I'd rather people hear it from me," she said.

"I don't want it to be twisted; I don't want it to be a court document. I want it to be real and authentic and I want to control the narrative. I want people to know from me."

Doherty recently appeared on the Beverly Hills, 90210 reboot, titled BH90210, and she returned to the show while fighting the condition.

She wanted to join the cast as tribute to the late Luke Perry, and to be an example for others battling cancer.

"I thought… people can look at that and say, 'Oh my God, yeah. She can work and other people with stage 4 can work, too.' Our life doesn't end the minute we get that diagnosis," she added.

Doherty revealed that Brian Austin Green was the only BH90210 co-star to know what she was going through.

"Prior to shooting, he would always call me and say, 'Listen: Whatever happens, I have your back,'" she recalled.

Doherty was diagnosed with breast cancer in March 2015, later revealing that it had spread to her lymph nodes.

BH90210 may be dead, but FOX has finally opened up about why the series was canceled. Get all the details right here via TV Fanatic. This is a good one!

The post BH90210: FOX Boss Reveals Why Series Was Canceled After One Season appeared first on TV Fanatic.

BH90210's cancellation divided TV Fanatic readers when it was announced a few months ago.

Some liked the meta aspect of it all, and others just wanted to check back in with the characters they fell in love with in the first place.

Despite strong buzz, FOX decided against bringing it back for a second season, and now the network is opening up about the controversial decision.

Time for Rewrites - BH90210 Season 1 Episode 4
(Shane Harvey/FOX)

FOX Entertainment Chief Michael Thorn chatted with Deadline about the scenario, admitting that the meta revival was a "ballsy" direction for the creative forces to take the series.

However, he went on to say that it was "brave for the actors" to pull off such a high-concept series and complimented them on a "terrific job."

Thorn followed that up by stating that the idea for the series was to do it as an event. In TV terms, events are one-and-done but have the possibility of returning a couple of years later if there's demand and a story.

While many thought the ratings were the concern, Thorn told the outlet that "it did well," and was "satisfying for fans," but the network didn't want to turn it "into something it wasn't intended to be, which is a long running concept that was not sustainable."

Chillin At The Peach Pit - BH90210 Season 1 Episode 6
(Shane Harvey/FOX)

It makes sense that there would be reservations about it becoming a long-running thing, but it certainly seemed like the cast had other ideas.

Ahead of the premiere, Tori Spelling revealed that production was complete and teased that a Season 2 was in the works. That now seems like false hope for fans who enjoyed the refreshed concept.

Spelling and Jennie Garth worked on the concept with Chris Alberghini and Mike Chessler. It brought back Garth, Spelling, Jason Priestley, Shannen Doherty, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, and Brian Austin Green as they tried to get a revival off the ground.

If you watched BH90210 online, you know the series had a cliffhanger ending, with FOX giving the revival the green light, but revealing that one of the cast members would be cut from the ongoing series.

Making Plans - BH90210 Season 1 Episode 5
(Shane Harvey/FOX)

BH90210 Season 1 averaged 2.5 million viewers and a 0.9 rating among adults 18-49. That was a decent figure, and the numbers only grew higher with DVR and Hulu viewing factored in.

Despite the November cancellation, the cast seemingly hinted that something else BH90210 related could materialize.

Sometimes the most beautiful things grow out of the greatest tragedies. These TV characters allowed their tragic backstories to strengthen them. Read on to see who!

Our pasts shape who we are as a person.

The good, the bad, the ugly, and the beautiful — they all make us who we are.

Read on as we discuss TV characters who allowed themselves to grow and become stronger, not only despite but because of, the pain and tragedy of their pasts.

Dean and Sam Winchester – Supernatural

Hands Up - Supernatural Season 14 Episode 16
(Dean Buscher/The CW)

Their tragic lives started with the loss of their mother at the hands of Yellow Eyes. Mary Winchester's death set in motion a chain of events that shaped Dean and Sam's lives. The brothers were dealt blow after blow.

From John dragging them into the hunting business instead of letting them live normal lives, to Sam's fiance Jess being murdered by the same demon who killed their mother, to John dying, and that was all before the second episode of Supernatural Season 2.

All of the loss that was thrown at them by the supernatural world only served to make Sam and Dean the strongest hunters around.

Dex Parois – Stumptown

A Sick Dex? - Stumptown Season 1 Episode 2
(ABC/Tony Rivetti)

We are just starting to get to know Dex, but we already know that Dex has been through a lot in her life.

Her ex-boyfriend Benny's mother drove them apart. After joining the military, Benny followed her in hopes of winning her back, only to get killed in the line of duty.

Benny's death, and her experience in the military in general, Dex suffers from PTSD, but her experiences led to an inner strength that has made her the badass that we already love.

Meredith Grey – Grey's Anatomy

Easy and Breezy - Grey's Anatomy Season 15 Episode 12
(ABC/Mitch Haaseth)

There aren't many people on television that have gone through as much trauma as Meredith Grey.

After Meredith's parents split up, Meredith was left to be raised by Ellis alone. Ellis was an absentee mother who left Meredith feeling inadequate, even in her adult years.

As a child, Meredith found Ellis after what appeared to be a failed suicide attempt, but what Meredith later realized through therapy was a cry for help.

As a young intern her streak of bad luck continued.

Finding out the love of her life was married, having her hand on live ammunition, and surviving a near-drowning experience to name a few.

It isn't until Ellis dies and her spirit gives Meredith the push to be extraordinary, that Meredith becomes the strong woman that we see today.

Meredith continues to face obstacles but she always manages to come out stronger.

Jason Street – Friday Night Lights

Jason had everything going for him. He was good looking, popular, and on the way to being a professional football player. Everything changed in an instant, though.

After an improper tackle, Jason is left paralyzed from the waist down, ending his football career and changing his life forever.

Jason's struggles pushed him to the lowest place he had ever been in, but he was eventually able to grow from it and realize that just because he can't play football anymore, doesn't mean that his life is over.

This realization allowed him to become a strong adult and an incredible father to his child.

Veronica Mars – Veronica Mars

Veronica was just a normal teenage girl before her best friend Lily was murdered.

Lily's murder set her on a much different path than she ever could have imagined.

While grieving the death of Lily, she also becomes the victim of sexual assault.

Veronica became hardened by her losses, but as her best friend Wallace reminds us, she is just a marshmallow.

Veronica is arguably one of the strongest female characters ever on television, but that would have never been possible without her tragic past.

Angel – Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel

Angel was turned into a vampire when he was in his mid-twenties.

For over 100 years he killed countless people and was one of the most notorious vampires in existence.

After being cursed with a soul by a gypsy clan, Angel was forced to live with the guilt of the horrors of his past.

For years, Angel let this guilt hold him back from the world before finally finding his calling in being a force of good.

Ryan Atwood – The OC

Ryan enters the lives of the Cohen family after being put in jail thanks to being there when his brother stole a car.

After getting out of jail, Ryan is abandoned by his mom, leaving him with nowhere to go.

Being raised by an alcoholic mom, with no father in the picture, forced Ryan to be independent.

Ryan showed us, though, that sometimes showing that you're strong doesn't mean doing everything alone, but instead being willing to let people in, which he slowly can do with Cohens.

Dylan Mckay – Beverly Hills, 90210

An abusive father raised Dylan due to his absentee mother.

Dylan fended for himself the majority of the time, which wasn't always a bad thing because things were less than perfect when his father was around.

After spending time in prison, Dylan's father fakes his death and joins the witness protection program — a fact that Dylan doesn't learn until years later.

Despite Dylan's upbringing, Dylan was mature beyond his years.

Caleb Rivers – Pretty Little Liars

Caleb got abandoned by both his mother and his father as a child. Caleb spent his life in the foster system, and when he meets the Liars he is living out of the school after a foster situation goes wrong.

Caleb spent his time hacking as a means to an end and even spied on Hanna for Jenna to get money.

Caleb eventually rose above his past, though, and became one of the best assets the Liars had.

Jo Wilson – Grey's Anatomy

Jo's Freedom - Grey's Anatomy Season 14 Episode 10
(ABC)

Jo spent her youth in foster care and then homeless.

In her early adulthood she ended up married to a man who was so abusive that she had to change her name and flee to get away from him.

Jo's past lead her to be incredibly independent.

The recent revelation that she was the product of a sexual assault threw her into a depression. Her storyline showed that no matter how strong someone is, we all can use help sometimes.

It takes real courage to admit that you need help and Jo showed that courage when she checked in for an inpatient psychiatric stay.

Shawn Hunter – Boy Meets World

Shawn's parents went in and out of his life with no sense of responsibility for him whatsoever.

Shawn was never really alone, though, and was taken in as an unofficial member of the Matthews family.

After Shawn's dad's death, Shawn considers running from his life, but eventually, realizes that between the Matthews and his half brother Jack he has everything he needs to stay strong.

Shawn never believed he would amount to much, but we learned in Girl Meets World that he is a successful photojournalist, proving that we do not have to be the products of our upbringing.

Alex Karev – Grey's Anatomy

Handsome Karev Pic
(ABC/Danny Feld)

Alex was raised by a drug addict father and a mother with significant mental health issues.

Alex was not the greatest person when Grey's Anatomy began.

However, after going through what he has on the show like dealing with Ava having a mental breakdown and helping Izzie through cancer only to later be left by her, Alex grew so much as a person.

Alex is one of the rocks of the show now and holds things together.

Sansa Stark – Game of Thrones

It's Time for War - Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 3
(Helen Sloan/HBO)

When we met Sansa, she was an unlikeable spoiled brat who felt entitled to the world.

After watching her father get killed on the orders of Jothri, her betrothed, she was effectively held captive by his family, eventually getting forced into marrying his uncle Tyrion.

Once she finally escapes the clutches of the Lannisters, she thought her troubles would be over, but they were only beginning.

Forced into yet another marriage, she is raped and tortured.

The Sansa we knew during Game of Thrones Season 1 would have never been able to handle such horrors, but Sansa rose like a phoenix from the ashes and eventually become the Queen of the North.

Jessica Davis – 13 Reasons Why

Jessica's New Job - 13 Reasons Why
(David Moir/Netflix)

Hannah may have been the focus of 13 Reasons Why Season 1, but she wasn't the only one who had been hiding a secret that was leading them to terrible pain.

Bryce had raped Jessica, and Justin had let him do it.

Fueled by the loss of Hannah, Jessica found the strength to fight back against her attacker.

Even though Jessica didn't get the retribution she had hoped for in going after Bryce, her experience changed her and she became a leader and a voice for change.

Kelly Taylor – Beverly Hills, 90210/90210

Kelly's mom Jackie was a drug addict alcoholic who didn't do much parenting.

Kelly may have had her fair share of ups and downs, even facing her problems with addiction.

However, she came out the other side as a strong woman and wonderful role model to Silver, who she ends up taking in even though she is already a single mother.

Zoe Benson – AHS: Coven

Zoe's gift that she is cursed with is the ability to make a man die from a hemorrhage during intercourse. When she loses her virginity, oblivious to her gift, she kills her boyfriend.

Zoe is then ripped out of her home and brought to New Orleans to get trained in the ways of witchcraft.

Because of Zoe's powers, she is unable to be physically intimate with anyone unless she wants them to die at her hands. She finds inner strength in her witchcraft, though, and goes on to train the next generation of witches.

Alison Dilaurentis – Pretty Little Liars

Truth Seeking - PLL: The Perfectionists Season 1 Episode 4
(Freeform/Scott Patrick Green)

Alison may have started as Rosewood's resident mean girl, but she went through her fair share of nightmares.

After being tormented by Mona under the guise of "A", Alison is buried alive by her mother. Scared to let her attempted murderer know she is alive, Alison is forced to stay on the run.

Once she returns she is framed for Mona's "murder" and is even found guilty of the murder and goes to jail.

She is then lied to by Charlotte, making her believe that she is her sister. Charlotte's boyfriend Archer tricks Alison into marrying him, and then he has her locked up in a psychiatric institute, and her money gets stolen by Archer and her aunt Mary.

Alison still, after everything that she was put through, ended up coming out as the most changed and most improved Liar.

Daenerys Targaryen – Game of Thrones

Saying Goodbye (Wide) - Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 4
(Helen Sloan/HBO)

Daenerys started Game of Thrones as an orphan who was being married off to a man much older than her to a secure an army for her power-hungry brother.

After losing her husband, who she grew to love, and bringing to life three dragons, Daenerys finds herself the ruler of her own people.

Daenerys faces many threats and betrayals over the years, but all her hardships hardened her and made her a fearless leader.

Say what you will about Daenerys by the end of Game of Thrones, but she was one bad bitch.

Carter Wilson – Finding Carter

Carter spent the majority of her life thinking she was being raised by a loving mother, Lori, only to find out that she had been abducted as a child by her.

Carter is forced back into her birth family where she feels like a stranger and struggles to bond with them.

Just when she finally starts to feel like part of the family, Lori kidnaps her again and reveals she is her biological mother as she was a surrogate for Carter's parents.

To add to Carter's troubles, she witnesses her boyfriend shoot her best friend accidentally, almost killing him, giving her no choice but to help turn him in to the police.

So many other people would have crumbled under the stress of Carter's dramatic life, but Carter remains a strong independent woman.

Jon Snow – Game of Thrones

A Bloody Aftermath - Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 4
(Helen Sloan/HBO)

Jon was raised as a bastard and spent his whole life being treated as such.

After going to the Nightwatch he felt like he had a sense of purpose, but still, he found himself suffering more pain.

Jon had not one, but two of the woman he loved, die in his arms, one at his own hands.

Jon rose from the dead after being murdered by his men. The betrayal only made him an even greater leader though.

As King of the North, he showed his strength, and even would have probably become the King of Westeros if he hadn't been the one to put an end to Daenerys. Not bad former bastard.

Emily Thorne – Revenge

Emily, also known as Amanda, had the only person she loved ripped away from her when her father went to prison for a terrorist act that he got framed for.

Emily finds herself in and out of foster homes and even spending time in juvie.

As strong as she may have felt as a rebellious teenager, her real strength comes when she finds out the truth about her father and his set on a path to avenge his name.

Maeve – Westworld

Maeve may be an AI, but that doesn't mean that she doesn't have feelings.

Living the story of a mother — one who saw her child murdered — left an imprint on her that she couldn't shake, and aided in her becoming aware of her reality.

Maeve's new found consciouness forces her to live out the horrors of being a host.

Maeve finds power in this though and eventually helps to lead a rebellion.

Callie Adams Foster – The Fosters/Good Trouble

Callie spent her childhood being tossed around various foster homes.

Through it all she is forced to be a mother figure to her brother, as just a teenager herself.

During her time in foster care she is faced with abuse.

As she finally finds a safe place to land with the Adams Fosters, she is allowed to deal with her trauma and becomes an advocate for other foster children.

Thursday was a dark day for fans of BH90210.

FOX decided to pull the plug on the revival after just one season. The cast took to social media in the aftermath, and it certainly seems like a follow-up or something else entirely could be brewing.

Shaken Up - BH90210 Season 1 Episode 4
(Shane Harvey/FOX)

"Summers highest rated show gets more meta by the minute #bh90210 practically writes itself," Jennie Garth tweeted after the news broke, adding:

"Thank you for the 2nd season material 🤣 You never know what’s really going on behind the scenes! Stay tuned."

Chillin At The Peach Pit - BH90210 Season 1 Episode 6
(Shane Harvey/FOX)

It's certainly a vague statement, especially considering that the show is not being shopped to other outlets.

Tori Spelling's Instagram statement was somewhat lengthier.

3 things happened this past summer…

– 1. #bh90210 was the highest rated show of the summer .

– 2. Our #bh90210 cast proved that after 20 years, you indeed CAN go home again…

– 3. I didn’t cram myself (with 3 pairs of spanx! ) into a red dress I wore on tv when I was 18 years old for nothin…

We’ve proved that to each other and our loyal fans. We ARE better together. – Our show is so meta that all the reality out there just helps us continue to evolve and gives us GREAT new storylines!

It would be nice for the fans who watched it if there was a follow-up of sorts, but the meta revival was so polarizing that it's possible that the next chapter could be an official revival set in the universe of the 1990-2000 OG series.

BH90210 was inspired by the real lives and relationships of Jason Priestley, Shannen Doherty, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green and Tori Spelling.

They reunited when one of them suggested it was time to get a Beverly Hills, 90210 reboot on the air.

Jason Sits Tight - BH90210 Season 1 Episode 6
(Shane Harvey/FOX)

BH90210 Season 1 wrapped with the expectation of continuing, with Christine revealing that the show was being picked up to series by Fox, but that one of the cast members would not be staging a comeback.

“We are so proud to have reunited in a very special summer event one of the network’s legacy series and casts with 90210 fans across the country,” the network said in a statement on Thursday.

“Profound thanks to and respect for Brian [Austin Green], Gabrielle [Carteris], Ian [Ziering], Jason [Priestley], Jennie [Garth], Shannen [Doherty] and Tori [Spelling], who, along with the entire crew and everyone at FOX and CBS Television Studios, poured their hearts and souls into this truly inventive and nostalgic revival.”

Making Plans - BH90210 Season 1 Episode 5
(Shane Harvey/FOX)

BH90210 Season 1 averaged 2.5 million total viewers and a 0.9 rating among adults 18-49. The show started big with a 1.5 rating, but it concluded with a 0.7 rating in September.

Despite the erosion as the series progressed, the show commanded strong gains in post-airdate viewing, meaning that the jury was out on a renewal as a result.

Not all revivals get the time they need to grow.

Although it had a remarkable series premiere, BH90210 struggled to captivate viewers afterward.

Now the news has dropped that the revival is dead in the water.

Bh90210 Cast
(Brian Bowen Smith/FOX)

The show, which suffered from creative issues well before its premiere, actually delivered a lot of soapy, fun goodness for those that understood the concept.

BH 90210 Review: The Reunion

If you kept an eye on social media during premiere night, you know that a large portion of the audience got confused by the show within a show concept.

The idea was that the stars of Beverly Hills, 90210 reunited 30 years after the cultural hit launched to get it rebooted.

Forever Friends - BH90210 Season 1 Episode 1
(Shane Harvey/FOX)

But instead of an actual reboot, BH90210 followed the stars playing exaggerated versions of themselves in mockumentary style while they pursued and kickstarted the revival.

BH90210 Review: The Photo Shoot

Jennie Garth, Tori Spelling, Gabrielle Carteris, Shannen Doherty, Jason Priestley, Brian Austin Green, and Ian Ziering all returned and took generous bites out of their stardom and later years with gusto.

The stars were making $70,000 per episode which equals a base salary of $420,000 per episode in salaries alone.

Unimpressed Jason - BH90210 Season 1 Episode 2
(Shane Harvey/FOX)

Garth and Spelling got an additional $15,000 per episode, and Priestley got an extra $46,000 for his directorial work.

BH90210 Review: The Long Wait

That's not much at all for actors with their credits, but the show still managed to work into its finale that when the revival, which on BH90210 was picked up for a season, returned, one of them wouldn't make the cut for budgetary reasons.

Garth and Spelling shopped the series for almost a year before it landed the series deal with Fox Entertainment, the home of the original teen drama, and Spelling suggested that they had years worth of stories to tell.

Ian Looks On - BH90210 Season 1 Episode 2
(Shane Harvey/FOX)

"We are so proud to have reunited in a very special summer event one of the network’s legacy series and casts with 90210 fans across the country," the network said in a statement.

"Profound thanks to and respect for Brian [Austin Green], Gabrielle [Carteris], Ian [Ziering], Jason [Priestley], Jennie [Garth], Shannen [Doherty] and Tori [Spelling], who, along with the entire crew and everyone at Fox and CBS Television Studios, poured their hearts and souls into this truly inventive and nostalgic revival."
