We root for heroes, but a TV show needs villains.

2022 had plenty of manipulators and monsters to keeping us riveted while make our skin crawl.

These characters are vile, and we wouldn't have them any other way.

2022 Villains We Love To Hate
(Netflix)

Check out TV Fanatic's picks for the villains of 2022 we love to hate.

Monet de Hann – Gossip Girl (HBO Max)

Monet is Annoyed - Gossip Girl (2021) Season 2 Episode 2
(Barbara Nitke/HBO Max)

Monet was on the periphery of the first season of the reboot, but the writers clearly understood Savannah Lee Smith was the strongest cast member and rewarded her with a deliciously villainous arc on Gossip Girl Season 2.

Monet is one of the richest characters on TV, and despite her mean streak on full display, there are some redeeming qualities.

This type of character is difficult to pull off, but I can't wait to see what becomes of Monet beyond the second season.

Hopefully, we get a third season!

Eric Tao – Industry (HBO)

When I'm Gone - Industry Season 1 Episode 5
(Amanda Searle/HBO)

You can argue that either everyone is a villain on Industry or no one is.

It's certainly the case with Harper, who very well may deserve a mention of her own, and her mentor with a deliciously bad streak, Eric Tao.

When Industry got some as incredible as Ken Leung to bring this complex character to life, it was no wonder we'd go mad for Eric and all of his clever backstabbing, undercuts, manipulation, plotting, and scheming.

Eric is playing chess while everyone else is playing checkers, and you never know for sure in this cutthroat, self-serving world if you're supposed to root for him or not, but you want to anyway.

Christine – Astrid and Lilly Save the World (SYFY)

Christine at Her No-Sex Booth - Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 7
(Alex Stead/Blue Ice Pictures/SYFY)

Christine got featured throughout most of the season as someone serving the higher villain and by being an all-around bad mother and person.

Despite her actions throughout the season, we couldn't help but be intrigued by Geri Hall's portrayal of the troubled mother.

She had many of the most memorable scenes from the show, including when she "saved a man's soul" by sleeping with him.

Even though she released the big bag into the world, we still felt devastated for her daughter, Candance, when Christine got killed.

Dr. Cherise Nuland – The Peripheral (Amazon Prime)

Cherise Spying - The Peripheral Season 1 Episode 8
(Prime Video (The Peripheral Official Instagram))

Dr. Nuland intrigued us wither her appearances on The Peripheral Season 1.

Played brilliantly by T'Nia Miller, Dr. Nuland proved to be a constant threat to Flynne and her family.

Although we aren't sure just how powerful she may be, she comes off as one of the most menacing characters on the show — impressive considering the competition.

Her face-off with Flynne — inside of a Peripheral — showed Cherise has some weaknesses. Hopefully, a potential season two will see them battling it out again.

Lupe – Acapluco (Apple TV+)

Unimpressed Lupe
(Apple TV+)

If you're looking for an empathetic department head who will cater to your needs, Lupe isn't the boss for you.

And don't even think about trying to date her niece!

From her tyrannical hold on the lost and found to her low tolerance for fun on the job, Lupe isn't easy on the laundromat workers under her domain, but she's a hoot for the viewers at home.

She also delivers a show-stopping number during the show's Christmas episode and is full of surprises.

John Kresse – Cobra Kai (Netflix)

Kreese in Prison -tall - Cobra Kai Season 5 Episode 5
(CURTIS BONDS BAKER/NETFLIX)

Kreese has been the villain from the very beginning; 1984's The Karate Kid and Cobra Kai would have the authenticity it has without his presence there.

Whereas Johnny Lawrence has become a happenstance and dynamic protagonist, Kreese remains a steadfast and formidable obstacle.

We have learned a lot about his backstory, found sympathy for some of his tragedies, and even rooted in his triumph over Silver's betrayal, but Kreese remains a baddie even though his intentions are well-meant. He may go down, but you can never count him out.

It's no accident his escape on the Cobra Kai Season 5 finale brings to mind Hannibal Lector's prison break-out, and his strolling off screams Tom Ripley or Keyser Soze. John Kreese is a villain cast in the mold of some of the most brilliant scoundrels who always return.

Sunny Balwani – Dropout

A Modern Day Iago
(Hulu)

In this docudrama of notorious fraudster Elizabeth Holmes, Sunny is the idle millionaire who initially forms a friendship with an 18-year-old Elizabeth studying abroad in China.

As the relationship veers from age-inappropriate to worthy of many more red lights, Sunny starts to gradually take control of Elizabeth's better instincts as a CEO.

Docudramas are at their best when they frame true stories in novel ways. In this version, Elizabeth Holmes — who, don't get us wrong, is still responsible for her crimes — is a proverbial Othello having her worst instincts culled by Sunny's Iago figure.

Like all the best villains, there's a dash of sympathy to the character at the start — he's lonely, and he sold his life's invention, so his best years are behind him — before his crimes start to catch up with him.

Adult Misty – Yellowjackets

Misty and the Green Jacket
(Showtime)

The first season hasn't revealed enough to determine the big murderer in the present day, but that's ok because Misty has done enough bad deeds in the B-plots to qualify her as a villain. Holy cow, she's ingenious when it comes to evildoing.

On a show as dark as Yellowjackets, Misty has a playful enough personality to balance out Shauna's resigned trauma and Natalie's unresolved anger.

Without Misty's presence, it would be a completely different show.

Frederick Gideon – Locke and Key

Gen. Gideon
(Netflix)

At times Locke and Key comes off a little hammy and kid-oriented as the actors play the level of danger pretty broadly.

Kevin Durand, however, must not have gotten the memo when he signed up for the part of back-from-the-dead Revolutionary War General Frederick Gideon.

This dude is appropriately bad to the bone for a man who already hated his American counterparts, is currently possessed by demons and has access to modern technology.

His presence also comes with small doses of fish-out-of-water humor as he learns about cars and glass displays for the first time.

Larys Strong – House of the Dragon

Larys Strong - House of the Dragon Season 1 Episode 6
(Ollie Upton/HBO)

House of the Dragon has no shortage of villains we love to hate, so why does Larys stand above them all?

For one, when it comes to spying and manipulation, he could give Game of Thrones Varys and Littlefinger a run for their money.

Larys evil deeds so far include extorting sexual favors from Alicent, destroying Alicent and Rhaenyra's friendship, and ordering the deaths of his father and brother.

Now with the Dance of the Dragons beginning in earnest, we can be sure Larys has many more atrocities up his sleeve.

Vecna – Stranger Things

Reasoning With Vecna - Stranger Things Season 4 Episode 9
(Netflix)

Whether you call him Vecna, Henry Creel, or One, there's no denying he's the big bad we've been waiting for in dread.

Just about every evil thing in the series can be traced back to him.

He's responsible for Barb's death, and Max's comatose state, and he's turning Hawkins Upside Down.

A villain this vile needs to be stopped permanently.

Don't you love a good plot twist? Because we do, and this year was chock full of them. Check out our top picks for the best plot twists of 2022.

Plot twists are the life's blood of drama in entertainment. What makes a good plot twist?

They can be story or character driven. What matters is that it's a real WTF, jaw-dropping moment that the audience did not see coming.

While nothing will ever top Darth Vader being Luke's father, shows keep trying to come close.

2022 Best Plot Twists Collage - The White Lotus
(Screencapped HBO, CBS, NBC,)

Here is our list of the best plot twists from 2022! Check it out below.

Gary DOES have Cancer – Gary Mendez on A Million Little Things

Final Season Cast - A Million Little Things
(ABC)

Any fan of A Million Little Things knows it has been years since the series pulled off an unpredictable and shocking plot twist.

Therefore the season finale had viewers reeling and at a loss for words when via a recording meant for their future child, Gary, with Maggie by his side, revealed that he was dying from cancer.

The Howards were stunned, and so were the viewers. But as the news clicked, we could pinpoint all the breadcrumbs along the way that built to this shocking revelation.

With the series heading into its final season, there's no telling what's in store for the characters and their future. But a good plot twist will leave an emotional impact and have you clamoring for more, and that ensures we would tune in for more.

The Revealing Reason For Why Trevor Doesn't Have Pants – Ghosts (CBS)

Gingerbread Chaos - Ghosts Season 2 Episode 9
(Bertrand Calmeau/CBS)

Woodstone Manor has many mysteries. The one keeping people talking was: why wasn't Trevor wearing pants?

Given his personality as a womanizing Wall Street bro, we expected the answer to be sleazy. Instead, the reason was noble.

Trevor gave his pants away so a young coworker wouldn't freeze to death during a hazing ritual.

There were hints before about Trevor being more than a horndog, but this solidified he was a mensch.

Helly's Outie – Severance (Apple TV+)

Helly's speech - Severance Season 1 Episode 9
(Apple TV+)

In a show full of mind-blowing reveals and clues that went nowhere (we still have no idea what those baby goats were doing), it's difficult to choose just one wild plot twist out of all of them.

Severance's finale episode began with the twist that some fans saw coming but still left our jaws on the floor — Helly, the most vocal detractor of the severance procedure and Lumon Industries, is Helena Eagan, heir to the company.

Unfortunately, the season finale ended on a cliffhanger (which dealt with the OTHER major plot twist), so we don't yet know how Helena will react to her Innie's rebellious streak or how it will impact the rest of the team.

Season 2 can't come soon enough!

Mikey's Secret Sauce – The Bear (FX)

The Bear Cast landscape
(Frank Ockenfels/FX)

With a tip of the hat to Arrested Development's "There's always money in the banana stand" moment, just as things seem their darkest for The Original Beef of Chicagoland, Chef Carmy stumbles on their salvation.

He decides that family is everything and sets out to make a traditional meal, using the recipe his late brother left him.

Building on a brief aside from earlier in the season, when Carmy notes the significant number of cans of tomato sauce Mikey had stockpiled, he opens them to make the sauce.

He discovers his brother had hidden wads of cash inside the cans!

The Bear's Handyman
(Copyright 2022, FX Networks. All rights reserved.)

It was a drug-addled but well-intentioned zeal to secure the restaurant's future. The sudden reversal of fortune means we have a second season to look forward to.

Also, it means Carmy can realize his dream of opening his own restaurant, The Bear, foreshadowed by his actual dream in the opening scene of the premiere, where he's letting a bear out of a cage.

Woah, that's bookending at a higher level.

Tanya Dies After Killing the People Who Wanted to Kill Her – The White Lotus (HBO)

Tanya in a Pickle - The White Lotus
(Photograph by Fabio Lovino/HBO)

Going into the second season, series creator Mike White was vocal about Jennifer Coolidge being front and center for future seasons.

As a result, many viewers discounted Tanya from death predictions ahead of the season finale.

In one of the most shocking scenes in TV history, Tanya unraveled the plot to kill her and took back the power.

Unfortunately, she didn't survive, but at least she went out by killing some of the people who conspired against her.

The Death Date is not just for the passengers – Manifest (Netflix)

The End is Near - Manifest Season 4 Episode 10
(Netflix)

Since the Death Date for the 828 passengers was discovered, everyone has tried their best to beat it, and every season they've been getting closer.

With the date closing in on Season 4, it was discovered that the Death Date is not just for the passengers but for the whole world.

The final shot of the first part saw passenger Angelina bringing literal lava to the city and beginning the inevitable.

Knowing that the passengers not only have to save themselves but now eight billion people left fans wondering just how they'll be able to do it in the final batch of episodes, and it should be as shocking and intense as ever.

Brutus Betrayed Astrid and Lilly – Astrid and Lilly Save the World (SYFY)

Brutus Concerned - Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 7
(Alex Stead/Blue Ice Pictures/SYFY)

Brutus appeared to Astrid and Lilly at the beginning of their monster-hunting quest. He seemed innocent and an excellent ally to have.

He provided the girls with important info about the monsters they needed to defeat and gave them tools to assist in their monster killing.

However, everything changed towards the end of the season. Brutus revealed the monsters he had the girls defeat were to open a portal for himself, not for the girls to save the world.

After being their friend through many gross monster battles, this betrayal hurt the girls. Though with a name like Brutus, maybe they should have seen it coming.

Rashid is a Very Powerful Vampire and Loius' Lover – Interview with the Vampire.

A Family - Interview with the Vampire Season 1 Episode 7
(Alfonso Bresciani/AMC)

Whether you figured it out earlier or had no clue, one or both of these revelations must be a shocker.

Throughout the season, it was easy to dismiss Rashid as a helper to Loius.

He was courteous and dedicated. His slender appearance was not typical of many vampires.

It was a huge twist to learn that he had been there from the start and had more powerful gifts, possibly than Lestat.

Gavin Learns He Was Born in 2076 – La Brea (NBC)

James & Gavin - La Brea Season 2 Episode 6

Gavin spent most of La Brea Season 2 hoping to learn more about his birth parents, only to discover he was from the future and was born in 2076.

That discovery shocked him since he was raised in 10,000 BC and in the 1980s. His birth father, James, had developed a time-traveling device.

However, his mom Caroline wanted to travel back to 10,000 BC and stop the device because every time it was used, it caused another sinkhole.

With Gavin born from the future and all the time-traveling, what will this mean for his family?

Astrid and Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 10 featured the final battle! Find out how the girls dealt with betrayal and The Guardian in our season finale review!

The post Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 10 Review: Guts appeared first on TV Fanatic.

Astrid and Lilly faced off against the final monster: The Guardian.

The final battle commenced, but not before an emotional goodbye rocked the girls' grasp on the truth in Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 10.

Astrid and Lilly got hit with a big slap of betrayal with the Guardian on his way to destroy everything.

Lilly Laughing With Astrid - Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 10
(Alex Stead/Blue Ice Pictures/SYFY)

In Astrid and Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 2, we theorized that Brutus was hiding much of the truth from the girls.

Shortly after that, we dumped that theory because we saw how his relationship evolved with the duo to something akin to family.

Sadly, our original theories were correct: Brutus was hiding something this whole time.

Brutus admitted to stretching the truth with everything while acknowledging that he provided them with the wrong orb.

Sparrow with Astrid At The Dance - Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 10
(Alex Stead/Blue Ice Pictures/SYFY)

This betrayal is devasting for the girls and us!

We love Brutus and his relationship with the girls, so learning the truth hurt.

However, the girls' goal hasn't changed: they still need to defeat The Guardian before he destroys the world.

However, before they stop him, he kills one of the main characters.

The Guardian was about to hurt Candace, but Christine stepped in, claiming that Candace wasn't a part of the deal.

Tate, The King of The Dance - Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 10
(Alex Stead/Blue Ice Pictures/SYFY)

Christine demands he take someone else's intestines, and he obliges.

He reaches into Christine and removes her guts, killing her instantly.

Seeing Christine die may not have been the saddest thing, she was a complete psycho, but her final moments were protecting her daughter.

Christine finally proved that she loved her daughter, but it was too late.

Although often marginalized by her mother, Candace was completely torn up about the loss of her mother.

Candace Happy At The Dance - Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 10
(Alex Stead/Blue Ice Pictures/SYFY)

The finale rounded the series out with the highest quality episode.

"Guts" shows what the quality of the entire show could've (and should've) been.

It had the perfect balance of comedy, emotion, high-school angst, and monster hunting.

The hour featured some of the best characters interacting with each other: Eggs and Val, Lilly and Candace, Astrid and Sparrow, and so many more.

It also highlighted change and evolution with Tate getting the entire school to vote for Lilly to be the dance's queen!

Lilly Dancing With Candace - Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 10
(Alex Stead/Blue Ice Pictures/SYFY)

Tate has proven in the past to have the ability to be a nice person, and this act of kindness shows that he has tried to change.

Sadly, The Guardian ruined the festivities.

He froze all of Astrid and Lilly's classmates (except Eggs, who was in the bathroom), forcing them to watch as he enacted his master plan.

Luckily for the girls, Eggs came in to save the day.

Armed with all of the past devices used to defeat previous monsters, he antagonized The Guardian as Astrid and Lilly stole his pendant: also known as the "Master Key."

Sparrow at The Dance - Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 10
(Alex Stead/Blue Ice Pictures/SYFY)

Lilly then proceeded to stab the Guardian right in the stomach, defeating him once and for all. We can't help but think that it was a little too easy to defeat him, but he was just an ordinary man without his pendant.

The Master Key also has one other (conveniently) helpful function: it can close the portal.

Luckily, despite Brutus's earlier betrayal., he still managed to provide the girls with the information they needed to close the portal.

We are devastated by Brutus's actions, but his reasons seem justified. People do anything for love.

The orb that he provided the girls with during Astrid and Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 1 wasn't to close their portal. It was for him to access the dimension that his soulmate got sent to.

Eggs At The Dance - Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 10
(Alex Stead/Blue Ice Pictures/SYFY)

Luckily, Astrid and Lilly still manage to close the portal independently, even with the betrayal fresh on their minds.

Sadly, even though the main plot wrapped up, that wasn't the end.

Some portal glitches (we're calling them glitches) happened, which caused Lilly to float, and Michelle to get possessed by a monster.

Astrid also claimed that her hands felt weird. We assume that these mysteries will be dealt with if the show receives a second season.

While we wouldn't mind seeing more from the show, the chances for renewal seem unlikely.

Eggs Dancing - Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 10
(Alex Stead/Blue Ice Pictures/SYFY)

For one, the rating and viewership numbers have been abysmal.

According to Nielson, the show has been averaging a .04 rating with less than 250k viewers.

Syfy also has the nasty habit of canceling shows even when they're doing well/have dedicated fanbases (i.e., Wynonna Earp, Defiance, ZNation).

Astrid and Lilly Save the World has some of the strongest diversity we've seen on basic cable, and the stories are always fun and entertaining, even if they become entirely cheesy.

Still, if we get more Astrid and Lilly, we hope that the show's quality will hover around this finale's caliber because if it does, we will most certainly be watching.

Val Dancing - Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 10
(Alex Stead/Blue Ice Pictures/SYFY)

That's the end of Astrid and Lilly this year!

What did you think? Were you surprised that our theories were correct (we sure were)?

Heads rolled on Astrid and Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 9. Read our review to find out who lost their head, and we theorize about what will happen in the season finale!

Astrid and Lilly dealt with this week's monster by chopping off their heads.

A doppelganger monster appeared in Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 9, forcing the girls to cut off their heads (and Val's head).

Obviously, it was not their heads, but it still made for an exciting plot.

Despite being the least-scary monster in terms of looks, the doppelganger monster creeped us out.

Taking on the victim's likeness, the monster aims to replace the person entirely and eat the original.

Lilly ended up becoming the first doppelganger monster, three in total.

Thankfully, the girls made up during this hour instead of the final boss.

Speaking of making up, Candace and Lilly also made some headway in their relationship.

(Alex Stead/Blue Ice Pictures/SYFY)

The doppelgangers were very realistic, as neither Brutus nor Astrid noticed that Lilly was not acting like herself.

Only after Lilly revealed herself to Brutus did he realize that Astrid hung out with the fake Lilly.

Lilly: Who are you?

Doppelganger Lilly: Who are you?

Lilly: I’m Lilly.

Doppelganger Lilly: I’m Lilly.

Lilly: Stop repeating everything I’m saying.

Brutus became overly concerned and decided to go out into the field with real Lilly.

Seeing Brutus venture out of his man cave always delights.

Olivier Renaud impresses as the monster-hunter guide, Brutus.

Why Aren’t You Watching These Excellent Shows?

We said it before, and we will repeat it — the performances in this show shine.

Jana Morrison and Samantha Aucoin show their exceptional acting prowess, and I'm excited to see them in the future.

Everyone else in the cast matches their immaculate energy wonderfully.

The acting saves the show from being a big mess, and we are very grateful for their skill.

Everything gets grounded by the leads, and they portray Astrid and Lilly beautifully.

(Alex Stead/Blue Ice Pictures/SYFY)

Overall, "Doppelkopfel" proved to be the best episode yet, and introduced a promising lead-in to the finale.

We finally got to see what The Guardian looks like!

Interestingly, he looks just like a regular man, specifically a dad.

He's dressed in khakis and a polo shirt, and The Guardian's got a dad bod!

Having The Guardian look like an average human will make finding and defeating him more difficult for the girls.

Candace as Juliet - Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 9
(Alex Stead/Blue Ice Pictures/SYFY)

Luckily, they won't be alone with Brutus's help and his monster guidebook.

But, defeating The Guardian will not be an easy feat, and we hope that Astrid and Lilly can ACTUALLY save the world!

Christine has created a large army for The Guardian with the youth group kids (and some others she kidnapped).

Sparrow, Astrid's semi-boyfriend, got kidnapped by Christine in Astrid and Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 8.

Speaking of relationships: Lilly and Candace made headway with theirs.

13 TV Characters That Got the Worst Sendoffs

Candace professed her love for Lilly, and she didn't want to keep it a secret anymore.

After the terrible (terrible!) school play, they share a kiss publically in the school.

We are delighted to see that Candace wants to embrace her sexuality and love for Lilly.

We couldn't stand her hiding her emotions as she did in the past, so seeing her express her feelings made us incredibly happy for the world to hear.

Michelle: The ending of Romeo and Juliet down under? Too depressing. I rewrote it! They’re not gonna die. They’re going to have a big fat Australian wedding and live happily ever after.

🔗 permalink: They’re not gonna die.

Hopefully, everyone survives the season finale.

Eggs as Romeo - Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 9
(Alex Stead/Blue Ice Pictures/SYFY)

With a show like Astrid and Lilly Save the World, the consequences of failure could lead to a lot of death.

None of the main characters have died before, so we wonder if that means they are saving an emotional death for the tenth episode.

As of right now, the one character in the most danger is Sparrow.

Sparrow seemed to be under the control of The Guardian, and we wonder how Astrid and Lilly will be able to break him (and all the other students) from that control.

Also, we theorize that Christine is in danger.

Poster for Astrid and Lilly Save the World - Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 1
(Alex Stead/Blue Ice Pictures/SYFY)

The Guardian claims to be on her side, but I doubt he's telling the truth.

The Guardian looks pretty self-serving, and she does seem to be slightly mortified when he makes one of the students remove an organ for him.

We wonder if she will come to her senses or die trying to become powerful.

Candace: Mom I’m at school. What’s up?

Christine: Sweetie we need to talk. You have been acting very distant lately. Getting detention? Missing youth group? And I know why.

Candace: You do?

Christine: It’s because I slept with Tate’s dad.

Candace: WHAT?

Christine: Don’t worry honey it was a one-time thing. It is over. We are not going to force you to become step-siblings.

🔗 permalink: I slept with Tate’s dad.

In a show like this, we almost HOPE that there will be a significant loss.

The stakes have been relatively low the past few episodes, with everyone surviving.

Kate, Beth, & Rebecca at Madison's Shower - This Is Us Season 5 Episode 15

Having someone close to Astrid and Lilly (or at least, close to the core characters) get injured or killed will show the true strength of The Guardian.

The show needs to go all-in with the finale because the events have been anticipated since we learned about the mysterious Guardian.

While "Doppelkopfel" ended up being a better episode than any others, we wonder if that momentum can continue.

The big bad himself indeed seem intimidating (even though he's a dad with a dad bod).

We also don't necessarily know The Guardian's exact plan.

Eggs with Romeo's Poison - Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 9
(Alex Stead/Blue Ice Pictures/SYFY)

We know he wants to get monsters in the human dimension, but to what extent?

Astrid mentioned something about monster soup, but that metaphor was not explained to us (or to the REAL Lilly).

Brutus needs to provide the girls with more information to battle The Guardian, and he may need to prepare to join in the battle.

Will Astrid and Lilly be able to stop one more monster? We are anxiously waiting to find out!

Tensions ran high during Astrid and Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 8. Detention brought out the worst in everyone, check out our review to find out who fought whom!

During their Saturday detention, Astrid and Lilly weren't on the best of terms.

Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 8 saw the girls fight over a few things.

We also wonder how the show will handle the fast-approaching end of the season.

Lilly Bored In Detention - Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 8
(Alex Stead/Blue Ice Pictures/SYFY)

A monster kept appearing in Lilly's dreams (nightmares), which caused her to get no sleep, and the beast subsequently appeared in the school.

Astrid and Lilly usually performed in sync (at least, with monster hunting), but their differences got in the way.

One thing that got revealed: Brutus found out that The Guardian's real and in town.

This freaked him out (and he found solace in his stuffed unicorn, Carl).

Eggs In Detention - Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 8
(Alex Stead/Blue Ice Pictures/SYFY)

For the first time in the series, Astrid and Lilly found themselves captured by the monster with all of their friends (and pseudo-acquaintances).

Luckily, they again prevented deaths, but their friendship got put to the test (and essentially failed).

They left detention on a sour note, with their friendship essentially in ruins.

Let's focus on the big thing: Brutus found out The Guardian is real.

This revelation had been a long time coming, and we are glad to see that everyone's finally on the same page (audience and characters).

Astrid Talking With Lilly in Detention - Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 8
(Alex Stead/Blue Ice Pictures/SYFY)

Unluckily, Christine already made her next move: she kidnapped Sparrow (again).

Sparrow fell for her with The Guardian with her, and he saw the Guardian face-to-face.

Luckily, Sparrow found out about monsters during "Hair."

When he, Tate, Eggs, Candace, Lilly, and Astrid all got kidnapped by the monster, the monster hunters were forced to reveal their secret.

Another secret also got out (not voluntarily).

Sparrow Talking to Astrid - Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 8
(Alex Stead/Blue Ice Pictures/SYFY)

Tate outed Lilly and Candace to the group of classmates.

This infuriated Astrid, not because Lilly and Candace kissed, but because he outed them.

Astrid also got pissed off that Candace ended up being Lilly's crush.

Lilly kept her crush on Candace a secret because she knew how Astrid felt about Candace (Astrid calls Candace "C-Bomb").

Astrid and Lilly ended up being entirely at odds with each other.

Candace In Detention - Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 8
(Alex Stead/Blue Ice Pictures/SYFY)

Much to Brutus's confusion, the girls left detention separately.

Lilly still got on Astrid's case from Astrid and Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 7, when Astrid got distracted by Sparrow.

Astrid continued to defend herself, all while she admonished Lilly for not telling her the secret.

Astrid's argument got fueled by the monster's presence.

The monster came out of the nightmares of someone who kept a secret (AKA, Lilly).

Michelle, Detention Proctor - Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 8
(Alex Stead/Blue Ice Pictures/SYFY)

The creature proved to be one of their creepiest to date.

It wrapped its victims into gross hair cocoons, which disintegrated the victims if left in long enough.

Of course, defeating the monster and releasing everyone from their cocoons resulted in plenty of monster goo.

Monster goo has been the most exciting recurring theme on the show, and we are glad they're keeping up with it.

With nothing changing or improving in the quality, we wonder how the season will wrap up.

Tate In Detention - Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 8
(Alex Stead/Blue Ice Pictures/SYFY)

The show consistently showed its most substantial hand, which we consider mediocre at best.

The performances, cheesy effects, and level of fun are all present, but they don't make up for the constant, tired tropes.

Everything Astrid and Lilly Save the World has shown us we've seen somewhere before, usually executed better.

At first, I was hesitant to compare the show to Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Now, I can confidently say that Astrid and Lilly Save the World want what Buffy had. Desperately.

Astrid with Sparrow - Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 8
(Alex Stead/Blue Ice Pictures/SYFY)

The show isn't entirely wrong, there are some delightful parts, and its cheesiness often comes off well.

But they often sacrifice substance for cheese, which only works on sandwiches.

On the one hand, "Hair" had a great monster and exciting interactions between all the leading players.

On the other hand, the episode fell deep into a very annoying trope.

The big bad is coming, but will the girls manage to reforge their friendship in time?

Candace and Tate - Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 8
(Alex Stead/Blue Ice Pictures/SYFY)

They're going through an emotional obstacle RIGHT before the big bad. Of course.

After being the perfect friends for so long, they're going through a friendship fight. Of course.

Their respective romances got in the way. Of course.

Why did the show have to venture into these plot points we've seen so many times in so many similar series?

I know it's set in high school, but the lack of maturity (especially this episode) gets tiring.

Lilly Bored In Detention - Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 8
(Alex Stead/Blue Ice Pictures/SYFY)

Hopefully, the season nicely wraps up the plot because the ratings aren't too hot for this freshman series.

The series does have its dedicated followers, but SYFY notoriously doesn't care (and that's for shows with high ratings).

We'll see! There are many ways it could go, but we hope for a wrap-up.

I think this would serve quite well to stay one season, as the plot could be resolved and have most things go back to normal.

It would provide excellent closure and also keep us sane.

Lilly’s nightmare monster comes to life during detention, but is fighting with her best friend and monster hunter partner Astrid even scarier?

Astrid and Lilly deal with some major personal issues with each other.

Lilly finds Sparrow's nail polish in her car, and figures out that Astrid and he had sex there.

She's offended and disgusted, as well as still angry that Astrid made mistakes with the monster.

They arrive in detention with Candace, Tate, Sparrow, and Michelle greeting them. Eggs is also there, but not for detention, just to study.

Michelle is her usually less-than-lovely self, and demands the students recreate her ruined decorations.

As they work on it, tensions rise.

Tate is still mad at Candace for breaking up with him.

Astrid is still mad at Lilly for keeping a secret from her.

Lilly is still mad at Astrid for getting the information wrong with the last monster.

The monster started attacking, and it went after everyone except Michelle.

Even Astrid and Lilly get captured by the monster.

Astrid and Lilly got forced to tell their classmates (Eggs, Sparrow, Tate, and Candace) that they're monster hunters.

They confess everything to them (of course, Tate already knew).

They manage to escape the monster's clutches and defeat it, without anyone losing their lives.

Astrid and Lilly still cannot get along, and that does not go well for Brutus.

Brutus discovered (with his new stuffed unicorn companion) that The Guardian is real, and is in fact in town.

He warns the girls, but they're more focused on their newfound animosity towards each other.

Sparrow leaves detention first, and on his way home, gets approached by Christine.

He gets in her van, and the voice of The Guardian greets him as Christine drives away.

The monster hunting duo faced off against a monster and his henchbird in Astrid and Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 7. Check out our review of the spicy new episode!

The post Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 7 Review: Lips appeared first on TV Fanatic.

]]>
Astrid and Lilly face off against one of the weakest monsters to date.

For the first time, Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 7 saw the girls face off against the monster, a monster's henchman!

"Lips" also saw many of the main characters' relationships take the next step.

Lilly Talking with Brutus at the School Fair - Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 7
(Alex Stead/Blue Ice Pictures/SYFY)

The monster-of-the-week proved to be pretty easy to defeat (once they found him).

The girls first thought they defeated the monster, but it ended up being the monster's henchbird (it had a beak, so we're calling it a henchbird).

This became their only hurdle, as defeating the pheromone monster and its eggs managed to be simple.

However, it still managed to be something quite gross.

The monster melted into the large (condom-shaped) baggie they trapped it in, and then they smashed the eggs, sending goo everywhere.

Lilly and Astrid Investigating the School Fair - Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 7
(Alex Stead/Blue Ice Pictures/SYFY)

They also made some headway with the supposed "Guardian," although Brutus told them he isn't real, just a folktale.

We, as viewers, know this to be false, as we've seen much of the monster with our own eyes and heard from it quite often.

Brutus assured them he'll find proof that The Guardian doesn't exist, so we are excited to see what happens when they all find out he's real.

Speaking of getting excited over things, all of the main characters got a little excited.

It may have been the excessive pheromones in the air or just a long time coming.

Varshidi at The School Fair - Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 7
(Alex Stead/Blue Ice Pictures/SYFY)

First and foremost, Astrid and Sparrow had their long-awaited sexy times.

Their intimate moment also made a beautiful comment on body positivity, as both Sparrow and Astrid were nervous about their bodies.

They both agreed that they didn't have to do anything, and then the camera cut just as the couple realized they both deeply cared for each other.

A surprising character also got some action in this episode: Christine.

That's right. Religion-obsessed, abstinence-supporting Christine got some action.

Christine with Her Lemonade - Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 7
(Alex Stead/Blue Ice Pictures/SYFY)

Tate's over-bearing dad approached Christine's booth, and they ended up doing the nasty.

Mid-sex, he told her about his atheism, and she asked him to "pray with her."

This "praying" ended up being both of them yelling "Oh God," which provided the hour with some much-needed laughter.

Christine: What denomination are you?

Doug: I’m an atheist!

Christine: No you’re not, no you’re gonna pray with me. Come on, say “Oh God!”

Doug: Oh God.

Christine: Like you mean it!

Doug: Oh God!

Christine: I am saving you dammit.

🔗 permalink: Say Oh God!

The final pair only saw a little bit of action (just kissing!), but it's the pair we've all been waiting for.

Candace kissed Lilly.

Lilly At the School Fair - Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 7
(Alex Stead/Blue Ice Pictures/SYFY)

CANDACE. KISSED. LILLY.

Lilly: You’re kinda hard to ignore with those legs.

Candace: You know what I would’ve voted you? Easiest to talk to.

Lilly: Um

Candace [leaning in]: Screw it.

🔗 permalink: Easiest to talk to.

The two ex-besties have been rekindling their friendship, but Candace's sexuality had been hinted at more than once.

Lilly's sexuality got directly expressed during "Lips," with Astrid excited that she was interested in a woman.

However, Lilly does not tell Astrid which woman she's interested in, as Astrid still does not approve of Lilly becoming friends with Candace again.

This prospective relationship may prove to be a rift in the duo's friendship in the remaining segments of the season.

Sparrow at The School Fair - Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 7
(Alex Stead/Blue Ice Pictures/SYFY)

We were jumping with joy when the two characters locked lips.

Another riff will be created between Candace and her mother, Christine.

Christine doesn't even want Candace to be friends with Lilly.

Hopefully, Christine doesn't find out right away.

We worry about this because Christine has already found out something quite important.

Brutus Concerned - Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 7
(Alex Stead/Blue Ice Pictures/SYFY)

As Christine left the fair with her hair and skirt messed up, she saw Lilly with the orb, leaving a voicemail to Astrid about the henchbird.

Christine immediately told The Guardian about this discovery.

The Guardian didn't seem to be worried, even though Christine did seem to worry a little.

The Guardian: Finally

Christine: Oh My! I had no idea that your final form would be so magnificent!

🔗 permalink: Final Form

One thing that keeps popping into our minds as we watch Christine and her Guardian: How does she still think he's related to her religion?

He's killed people for the sake of growing his power, and Christine seemed to be on board with that.

Brutus Sitting Alone at The School Fair - Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 7
(Alex Stead/Blue Ice Pictures/SYFY)

We are very excited to see Christine's reaction to the real goal of the Guardian (whatever that may be).

The only person without a companion ended up being Brutus.

Luckily, he was at a school fair, so of course, there were prizes: including a giant stuffed unicorn.

Brutus immediately snatched the unicorn for his own, and we just thought it was the sweetest thing.

We know it's childish, but we hope that the giant stuffed unicorn appears in the final three episodes.

Astrid Talking With Sparrow - Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 7
(Alex Stead/Blue Ice Pictures/SYFY)

That's right, Fanatics, Astrid and Lilly Save the World season one only has THREE more segments left!

With the ratings not performing nearly as well as its lead-in Resident Alien, we are starting to wonder if we will have to say goodbye to the monster hunting duo.

Even though it's cheesy, campy, and all-around not the best show, we still love tuning in each week to see what shenanigans occur.

Hopefully, with ten monsters and ten episodes, much of the main plot may wrap up by the end of the season.

The only factor that could cause a problem is The Guardian, as he may not be one of the leading ten monsters.

Christine at Her No-Sex Booth - Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 7
(Alex Stead/Blue Ice Pictures/SYFY)

For now, that's complete speculation. The Guardian could be the tenth monster.

We hope that the series wraps up without (significant) cliffhangers because we'd hate to see another show on SYFY get the boot with a lot of the story remaining.

The showdown between the girls and The Guardian sure seems like it'll be an intense, entertaining, and wild battle.

Three monsters remain for Astrid and Lilly to save the world, and hopefully, they do!

Sparrow Whispering into Astrid's Ear - Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 7
