However, some TV shows manage to do so in a surprising, yet wholesome way. Here's our list.

Now that it's June, it's officially Pride month, and sadly, with stay-at-home orders still in place, the prospects of any significant Pride parades are bleak.

We may have to celebrate in other ways in an attempt to fill the void. Why not catch up on some of these hidden gems?

Here is our list of LGBTQ storylines that surprised us. Don't forget to add them to your watchlist so you can make sure to cover all your bases in queer TV knowledge.

Continue reading at your own risk as the list contains spoilers if you aren't up-to-date on these shows.

Edie's Late Life Change on Almost Family

Almost Family is a wacky show that sort of feels like a silly and predictable teen drama, but then it throws some fast and hard curveballs.

Edie's the typical later-in-life queer bloomer, and although she may not have gone through the discovery period in the most morally sound way, she's working hard to find herself.

She has the career, a new husband, and the ultimate life, but things are thrown into disarray when she discovers that she has fallen for the prosecuting attorney on the case against her father.

Edie can't seem to make up her mind between what feels right and what feels good, but she'll get there.

Bisexual Awareness on Awkwafina is Nora From Queens

Nora Lum, best known as Awkwafina, shares a semi-autobiographical retelling of her life growing up in New York through this new comedy.

Her character Nora Lim, casually comes out as bisexual through the clever line, "They should have called it 'bi-school,' cause I was bisexual as f*ck back then."

As the show is more of a focus on the struggles of adulthood rather than her love life, there's no love story to follow. So if you're looking for an LGBTQ love story, look elsewhere.

It's the casualness of the line rather than her character having a substantial coming-out moment that makes it a pleasant and sweet surprise.

From Friends to More on Diary of a Future President

Bobby and Liam
(Disney+)

Diary of A Future President is an innocent show about the first female Latina president recounting her childhood and her road to the presidency.

Bobby, her brother, is at the turning point of becoming a teenager and figuring out his role in society.

It's a slow progression, but Bobby figures out that his fondness for his friend Liam goes beyond more than just friendly feelings.

It is an essential portrayal of a young boy going through the steps of figuring out his sexual identity. So many times, sexuality coming-of-age plotlines are female-dominated.

Teddy's Bisexuality on Grey's Anatomy

Teddy appearance - Station 19 Season 3 Episode 11
(Raymond Liu)

Teddy's not Grey's Anatomy's first queer character, but she was the most surprising.

Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 19 revealed that Teddy had an ex-lover named Allison who died in 9/11. It came out of left field, but there was some squealing involved.

The fact that she named her daughter after the love of her life and will never love Owen or Koracick as much as she loved Allison revealed so much about Teddy's character.

It always seemed like she had a secret hiding in the depths of her past, and this bombshell couldn't have been any better.

More Than a Straight-Girl Crush on I Am Not Okay With This

If you're a fan of The End of the Fxxcking World, you'll be struck by this show, too.

Set in the same universe, I Am Not Okay With This follows the story of Sydney, a high schooler who's discovering new powers alongside trying to navigate existing feelings for her best friend, Dina.

After Sydney kissed Dina, Dina immediately pulled back, and it seemed like the all too typical straight girl crush, but to our pleasant surprise, Dina requited the romantic feelings.

Here's hoping the second season furthers the storyline because Dina and Sydney are an adorable pairing.

The Kiss on Killing Eve

Killing Eve kiss
(BBC America)

This one may come as no surprise, as the premise of the show surrounds the rising tension between the two main leads Villanelle and Eve.

However, Killing Eve Season 3 Episode 3 finally gave us what we had all been hoping for — the big and anticipated kiss that should've happened seasons ago.

There would've been a lot of anger had the showrunners been toying with our emotions and not given us a resolution to the building tension.

This final season finished with a mutual fondness between the two women, and we're interested to see if it continues advancing romantically.

Mia's Mysterious Past on Little Fires Everywhere

Mia and Pauline - Little Fires Everywhere
(Hulu)

Hulu's limited series featuring two powerhouses, Kerry Washington and Reese Witherspoon, shared the story of two women and the relatable triumphs and tribulations of motherhood.

Separated by race, economic classes, and seemingly completely different viewpoints on life, the women begin to see their lives intertwine more than they'd care to admit.

Mia's mysterious past is finally resolved on Little Fires Everywhere Season 1 Episode 6. If you've read the books, you might have been surprised to see the pivotal changes made to Mia's sexuality.

In the books, it's implied that Mia's asexual, however, the TV adaption chose to stray away and shift Mia's mentor, Pauline, into her love interest. It's a critical portrayal of a black queer love story.

Coming Out on Never Have I Ever

Fabiola
(Netflix)

An amazing show reminiscent of Jane the Virgin, Never Have I Ever shines the spotlight on an Indian family and their emotional healing after the recent death of their patriarch.

Fabiola, one of Devi's best friends, quietly goes along with the trios' goal of attaining popularity by securing boyfriends.

It's not until she begins to talk to boys that she realizes she fancies one of the girls in her class instead.

Her positive coming-out experience may not be realistic of everyone's experience, but it makes for a happy and positive moment for her character, and we're all here for it.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge Delivers on Run

If you're in love with Phoebe Waller-Bridge and her writing, you must add HBO's Run to your list.

She co-collaborated to create yet another dark comedic romance, and this one won't disappoint.

And the best part is that she has a small role where she portrays Laurel, a lone taxidermist from the middle of a secluded forest.

Laurel begins sleeping with the police officer who initially questions her about a murder, adding yet another queer theme alongside her other hit series Killing Eve.

The Gay Bully Trope on Sex Education

Adam Sex Education
(Netflix)

This one may have been a bit more obvious, as the gay bully trope has been used many times before, but Adam's characterization beautifully shared the painful arc of acceptance.

The writers showcased the intimate and sweet scenes between Adam and Eric and flipped our initial hatred of Adam to that of understanding and sympathy.

Hopefully, Sex Education Season 3 will expand on his journey and his budding relationship with Eric.

Sex Education does not hold back in its portrayal of diverse relationships.

Dex's Bisexuality on Stumptown

Dex - Stumptown
(ABC)

Cobie Smulders plays Dex, a badass army vet turned private investigator, in this recent ABC release.

Dex flips the typical male PI paradigm on its head as she shows the world that a woman can be just as successful and just as messy.

Her struggling love life, gambling debt, and PTSD shape her hardened, yet enigmatic personality.

The writers successfully integrated her bisexuality into the storyline, and Dex's casual correction of her ex's pronouns from "he" to "she" portrays this flawlessly.

It seems TV shows are starting to take a casual approach to identify a character's sexuality, allowing for the overused tropes and overdone storylines to fall by the wayside.

While there remains a generous amount of coming-out stories that can positively resonate with viewers.

We'd love it if you commented down below with any of your thoughts! Were you also surprised by any of these? Which shows did we miss?

Fox has officially canceled Almost Family after one low-rated season. Will you miss the series? Get all the details right here via TV Fanatic.

As we previously teased earlier this year, FOX has canceled Almost Family after one season.

Almost Family stared Brittany Snow, Tim Hutton, Megalyn Echikunwoke, Emily Osment, Mo McRae, Mustafa Elzein, and Victoria Cartagena.

The series focused on Julia Bechley (Snow) whose world turned upside down. She learns that her father, Doctor Leon Benchley (Hutton), a pioneer in fertility, secretly used his own sperm to father over a hundred children.

(JoJo Whilden/FOX)

While still coming to terms with this revelation, Julia discovers that she has two new half-sisters — her former best friend, Edie Palmer (Echikunwoke), and ex-Olympic athlete Roxy Doyle (Osment).

Almost Family Season 1 is averaging just 1.5 million viewers and a 0.4 rating, with the most recent episode coming in at just 0.8 million viewers and a 0.2 rating.

Even before those ratings, the show was losing a significant chunk of The Masked Singer's ratings, meaning that it was earmarked for cancellation shortly after it premiered.

As FOX's lowest-rated series in the demo, the chances of it being renewed were slim. The network previously banished the final two episodes to Saturday nights.

Waking Up - Almost Family Season 1 Episode 1
(JoJo Whilden/FOX)

That's why it seemed the series was effectivly canceled some weeks ago. It's rare for a scripted series to move to Saturdays and survive.

Fox recently trialed unscripted series Lego Masters out of The Masked Singer and it is averaging 3.6 million viewers and a 1.6 rating.

Fox, as a whole, have not made many new renewal or cancellation decisions as of yet, with The Simpsons and Bless The Hearts as the sole renewals thus far.

9-1-1, 9-1-1: Lone Star, Bob's Burgers, Last Man Standing, Family Guy, and The Resident are likely to be renewed.

Deputy, Prodigal Son, Outmatched, and Duncanville are on the bubble for renewal.

FOX has some big decisions to make as we look towards the 2020-21 TV season.

The network is well-known for cutting popular shows, but it will be exciting to see what decisions they make in the coming months.

FOX is starting to lean towards more unscripted content, and given the success of The Masked Singer and WWE Friday Night Smackdown, don't expect that to change.

That makes it difficult to exist as a marginally-rated scripted original series on the network.

Let's take a look at how the current scripted shows are performing and how their results bode for additional episodes and beyond.

Judd in Uniform - 9-1-1: Lone Star Season 1 Episode 2
(Jack Zeman/FOX)

9-1-1: Lone Star – Certain Renewal

9-1-1: Lone Star Season 1 averaged 6.3 million viewers and a 1.2 rating in the demo.

The spinoff is a hit and is pulling in solid DVR ratings, so it will be back for a second season.

A Bloodied Athena - 9-1-1 Season 3 Episode 3
(Aaron Epstein/FOX)

9-1-1 – Certain Renewal

9-1-1 Season 3 kicked off with a tsunami storyline that got viewers talking for all the right reasons. It is currently up year-to-year.

Related: 9-1-1 Season 3 Episode 2 Review: The Searchers

It is averaging 6.8 million total viewers and a 1.4 rating in the demo, making it Fox's number one scripted series in total viewers and the demo.

A Memorial - Tall - 9-1-1 Season 3 Episode 3
(Jack Zeman/FOX)

It's rare for shows to be up these days, but how is 9-1-1 performing on the DVR front?

9-1-1 Season 3 Episode 1 scored 11 million total viewers and a 2.6 rating in the demo when Live+7 was factored. The show remains a success with both viewers and critics and will be around for years to come.

The Simpsons – Renewed

The Simpsons has already been renewed. The show will outlive us all at this stage. As always, though, the ratings are positively affected by football overrun.

Supervising Interns - The Simpsons
(FOX)

To date, The Simpsons Season 31 is averaging 3.5 million total viewers and a 1.3 rating. It is well ahead of last season.

The show doesn't play as well as some others on the DVR front, but it gains around 20% in Live+7.

Reining in the Whitlys - Tall - Prodigal Son Season 1 Episode 14
(David Giesbrecht / FOX)

Prodigal Son – Could Go Either Way

Prodigal Son was the first new series to score a full-season order after two weeks of solid ratings.

But the ratings have slipped from the high ratings it once had.

But First - Tall - Prodigal Son Season 1 Episode 1
(David Giesbrecht / FOX)

Prodigal Son Season 1 is averaging 3.4 million viewers and a 0.8 rating in the demo.

It does lose a lot of the lead-in, but the show has proven to be a decent performer in delayed viewing, meaning there is an audience for it.

Right now, the series is on the bubble, and it will remain there until FOX makes a decision on it.

Bless The Harts – Renewed

FOX has tried to launch new comedies on Sundays over the last few seasons.

Bless The Harts is currently averaging 2.2 million total viewers and a 0.9 rating. That is thanks in large part to the football overruns that are propping up The Simpsons.

The series premiere only got modest boosts with a week of DVR factored in, but FOX believes in it and has already ordered up a second season.

Empire – Ending

FOX's decision to end Empire may have been a surprising one, but after witnessing its ratings on Tuesdays, it's not difficult to understand why.

The Lyon Patriarch - Empire Season 6 Episode 1
(Chuck Hodes/FOX)

The show has been trending downwards for years, and Empire Season 6 is averaging 2.7 million viewers and a 0.8 rating.

Empire still benefits from gains on the DVR front.

The season premiere alone propelled 70% with a week of DVR factored in. Still, given the erosion, the network made the right call in making this the final season.

Bob's Burgers - Certain Renewal
(FOX)

Bob's Burgers – Certain Renewal

This animated series is averaging 2.3 million viewers and a 0.9 rating.

It does still benefit from decent post-airdate gains and has lucrative international deals that will keep it on the air for years.

Losing His Job - Family Guy
(FOX)

Family Guy – Certain Renewal

This once-hot animated series is raking in 2.1 million viewers and a 0.8 rating.

It still commands gains of around 70% on the DVR front. That will keep it safe for another few years.

If FOX wanted to part ways with it, it would move to another destination with ease.

Sewing Him Up - Tall - The Resident Season 3 Episode 3
(Guy D’Alema/FOX)

The Resident – Likely Renewal

The Resident Season 3 got off to a slow start on Tuesdays.

It is averaging 4 million total viewers and a 0.7 rating in the demo but is now showing substantial DVR gains.

FOX has limited places on the schedule, but The Resident is showing stability throughout the season, which is a great thing to have.

The show is still as buzzy as ever, so that's another positive.

Roxy is Happy - Almost Family Season 1 Episode 2
(JoJo Whilden/FOX)

Almost Family – Canceled

Almost Family was given a healthy promotional campaign and even scored the post-Masked Singer slot.

But it could only muster 2.7 million total viewers and a 0.7 rating out of a lead-in of 7 million viewers and a 2.0 rating.

It went on to average just 1.7 million viewers and a 0.5 rating. FOX made its decision clear when it said it would be airing the final two episodes on Saturdays.

Kristen Mike - Last Man Standing Season 7 Episode 3
(Fox)

Last Man Standing – Certain Renewal

After a significant delay between seasons, Last Man Standing moved to Thursdays and is averaging 4.3 million viewers and a 0.8 rating.

It still gets solid post-airdate viewing, so it will be back for another season.

Lost Girl Found - Deputy Season 1 Episode 7
(Karen Kuehn/FOX)

Deputy – Canceled

Deputy was battling the fine line between renewal and cancellation, and it lost.

3.8 million with a 0.6 rating were not enough to save it.

There are a lot of secret siblings on television.

Plenty of TV shows tend to build their foundation on common tropes such as the cringe-worthy love triangle trope and the long lost sibling trope.

If you need to stir up some drama, especially in a campy teen series, there's no better way than by bringing in a secret sibling that's jealous, scorned, vengeful, broken, betrayed, looking for a family, or all of the above.

Some secret siblings are introduced in a sensical way with the serious laying some breadcrumbs leading up to the introduction.

Other reveals come out of left field and frustrate audiences by appearing as mere plot devices thrown in for the sake of it.

And sometimes, the trope works well as the secret siblings become pivotal to the storyline and the main character's development.

We're looking back at some of our favorite secret siblings on television. Which ones would you add to the list?

The 100: Exploring Jordan Green's Worth and His Potential For A Better Existence

Chic/Charles – Riverdale

On Riverdale, Betty and Jughead's first half brother (yes, they're still dating), Chic, was a poser but stirred up enough drama to make the fandom collectively hate him.

Eventually, we met the real Charles, an FBI agent, who bonded with Betty over her mother's time at The Farm.

Unfortunately, Charles turned out to be just as crazy as Chic. The two were revealed to be lovers who are plotting something against the family that abandoned them.

Charles and Betty - Riverdale
(The CW)

Scott Rosson – Gossip Girl

Scott appeared in the second season of Gossip Girl as the love child of Lily van der Woodsen and Rufus Humphrey, thus making romantic couple Serena and Dan half-siblings.

Everyone tried to keep Scott a secret for as long as they could, but eventually, the secret sibling was outed by the one and only Gossip Girl.

XoXo.

Scott Roson - Gossip Girl
(The WB)

Adam – Dynasty

Adam, the kidnapped child of Blake Carrington and Alexis Carrington, appeared early on in Dynasty but was quickly revealed to be a fake hired by Alexis to get her hands on the Carrington money.

The real Adam Carrington made his way to the Manor, though, and he's equally as deranged and way more dangerous as his predecessor.

He had his brother, Steven, committed in Europe after thinking he was having "hallucinations," shoved his mother's face into the fireplace, and continued to sabotage his half-sister, Fallon, daily all while hoping to gain his father's love.

A Contender - Dynasty Season 3 Episode 4
(Bob Mahoney/The CW)

Ari and Ziva – NCIS

After Ari murdered NCIS agent Kate Todd, everyone believed that Ziva David was simply his Mossad control officer.

It’s only after Ziva kills Ari to save Gibbs that we find out that he was her half-brother.

It’s a storyline that took place during NCIS Season 3 and has had repercussions that have lasted until present day NCIS Season 17!

Zelena – Once Upon a Time

Zelena, aka the Wicked Witch of the West (from the Wizard of Oz), arrived in Once Upon a Time Season 3.

She was Regina Mills' (the Evil Queen) half-sister, abandoned as a child. She had wished dearly for a family.

Her jealousy over Regina consumed her and led to plenty of magical wars before the sisters mend their relationship and lived happily ever after.

Anezka – Jane the Virgin

Yael Groblas pulled double duty on Jane the Virgin to portray the main character Petra and her long lost twin, Anezka.

Anezka was a "shy mouse" who grew up in an orphanage in the Czech Republic before being brought to America by their evil mother, Magda.

Though it seemed like she wanted a genuine relationship with Petra, she was later revealed to be conspiring with Magda to steal Rafael's money and flee the country.

Maggie and Meredith – Grey’s Anatomy

In the Grey's Anatomy Season 10 finale, we learned that Maggie and Meredith are half-sisters. Their mother, Ellis, had a fling with Richard when Meredith was very young.

They put Maggie up for adoption, but when she got older, she learned her late mother was a top-notch surgeon at Grace Seattle Hospital.

While the sisters had a strange relationship at first, they later came around and developed a friendship.

Adam – Supernatural

Adam was revealed to be John Winchester's son on Supernatural.

But it was more shocking to find out that John was actually a better father to Adam than our boys, Dean and Sam.

It's no surprise that they left him in hell. The resentment is real.

The Supernatural Brothers
(The CW/SERGEI BACHLAKOV)

Wally – Flash

The Flash Season 2 introduced us to Wally, who was revealed to be Iris' long lost brother from her estranged mother.

Wally hesitated to embrace the familial unit, but eventually joined Team Flash and becomes Kid Flash.

(Katie Yu/The CW)

Alex Drake – Pretty Little Liars

The PLL family tree was more complicated than the one from Game of Thrones , and there were plenty of surprise sibling reveals including Alex Drake as "AD" in the series finale.

Alex was the daughter of Mary Drake and Peter Hastings, and Spencer's identical twin sister.

While Spencer was given to her biological father and his wife, Alex was given up for adoption to an orphanage in the UK where she plotted her insanely complex revenge.

Spencer and Alex
(Freeform)

Charlotte DiLaurentis – Pretty Little Liars

Like I said, the family tree is very complicated. Charlotte was born "Charles" and transitioned into the character we know as CeCe.

Though she was the biological daughter of Mary Drake and Pastor Ted, she was adopted by Jessica and Kenneth DiLaurentis (Jessica's sister is Mary).

That made her Alison and Jason's biological cousin and adoptive sister (and she had a romantic relationship with Jason!), and also, the biological half-sister of Spencer Hastings.

CeCe and Spencer - Pretty Little Liars
(Freeform)

Derek – One Tree Hill

In yet another case where we meet the "fake" secret sibling before meeting the real one, a deranged and broken man named Ian posed as Peyton's half-brother, Derek, to get close to her.

When fake Derek realized that he's losing Peyton, he tried to rape her, but thankfully, Lucas and her real brother, Derek, a US Marine, came to her rescue.

The Real Derek - One Tree Hill
(The WB)

Patrick – Revenge

Patrick (played by This Is Us' Justin Hartley) was Victoria Grayson's long-lost son on Revenge, a child she had after being raped by a neighbor and gave away to a trusted nun at the convent.

She paid him $5 million so that he'd stop searching for her but when they reunited, he was the only child who didn't resent her.

Their relationship was borderline incestual.

Patrick - Revenge
(ABC)

Diana – The Secret Circle

After arriving in Chance Harbour, Cassie Blake began to unravel her family history and learned that her mother was a witch and her father specialized in dark magic and sired several children together thus making her new friend, Diane, her half-sister.

This added to the awkwardness already stemming from the fact that Diane’s boyfriend was “destined” to be with Cassie.

For a series that lasted a mere one season, they managed to squeeze in two popular tropes!

Sister Witches - The Secret Circle
(The CW)

Dawn – Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Dawn simply turned up in season 5 as Buffy’s never before seen younger sister.

Later it was revealed that the girl was actually a mystical "key" to unlocking dimensions and was made into Buffy's sister so the Slayer would protect her.

It was an incredibly odd game-changer that continues to mystify many fans.

Dawn - Buffy the Vampire Slayer
(UPN)

Sutton and Emma – The Lying Game

The premise of The Lying Game found two identical sisters finding out that the other exists.

Upon meeting, they agreed to switch lives for a few days.

But when Sutton failed to show up at the designated meeting place, Emma was torn between coming clean about her identity or figuring out what happened to her sister and the truth behind their separation.

Hermosa – Riverdale

Up until Riverdale Season 4, it was believed that Veronica Lodge was an only child.

After all, she's simultaneously the apple of her father, Hiram Lodge's, eye and the thorn in his side.

But in a plot twist that was a little too convenient, Hermosa came to town to be there for her father when he got out of prison and briefly took the throne as his "new favorite daughter" thus making things messier between Veronica and Hiram.

The introduction didn't make much sense and left many fans scratching their heads.

At least it wasn't as big of a disaster as the Chic/Charles storyline.

(Colin Bentley/The CW)

Morgana – Merlin

Morgana was revealed to be Arthur's sister instead of just Ward of the King.

That was a bit odd, though, since early in the first season there was a tad of romantic tension.

Thankfully, it quickly died and was transformed into brotherly/sisterly love.

Morgona
(BBC)

Paige – Charmed

During Charmed Season 4, Piper and Pheobe found out that their mother had an affair with a Whitelighter and that they had a younger half-sister, Paige, who was the most powerful of them all.

They're united after the death of their eldest sister, Prue.

Charmed One
(The WB)

Emiko – Arrow

Emiko showed up on Arrow Season 7 and was revealed to be Oliver's half-sister who was abandoned by his father.

It was the major storyline for the season as Emiko was the "big bad" and took his position as the Green Arrow.

Her goal was to destroy Oliver's legacy by destroying Star City and framing him for it.

Who Is My Sister? (Tall) - Arrow Season 7 Episode 17
(Shane Harvey/The CW)

Bridget and Siobhan – Ringer

Sarah Michelle Geller plays estranged twins Bridget Kelly and Siobhan Martin on Ringer.

Bridget Kelly was a recovering drug addict and stripper who was under witness protection after witnessing a murder and testifying against her crime lord boss.

When her wealthy, elitist sister appeared to have committed suicide, she assumed her life seamlessly as the family never knew about her existence in the first place.

Sarah Michelle Gellar in Ringer
(The CW)

Missy Cooper – The Big Bang Theory

Missy Cooper only showed up for two episodes in The Big Bang Theory's whole run.

Still, her first appearance was a surprise to Sheldon's friends and was quite disruptive as Leonard, Wolowitz, and Raj competed for her attentions.

Missy Cooper
(CBS)

Freya Mikaelson – The Originals

Freya became a fan favorite, so it's easy to forget that she wasn't part of the family until The Originals Season 2.

Esther told Mikeal that their firstborn daughter died of the plague but instead, gave her to Aunt Dahlia as payment for doing a fertility spell using Dark Magic.

Dahlia put Freya under a spell that locked her in a house and forced her to hibernate and preserve her youth, but she escaped and reunited with her siblings.

Moving On - The Originals
(Bob Mahoney/The CW)

Nadia Santos – Alias

Nadia was the daughter of Arvin Sloane and Irina Derevko making her Sydney Bristow's half-sister.

She was taken from Irina right after birth and grew up in an orphanage in Argentina where she eventually got a job working for Argentinian authorities before her sister sought her out.

Nadia Santos - Alias
(ABC)

Jack Hunter – Boy Meets World

Jack appeared on Boy Meets World Season 5.

It was the first time he'd reconnected with his father, Chet, and his half-brother, Sean.

It took a bit of adjusting for Sean, but eventually, the two bonded and become brothers.

Jack and Sean Hunter - Boy Meets World
(ABC)

 Claire and Jack – Lost

Both Claire and Jack are survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 on Lost when they find out that they are half-siblings.

After Carole, Claire's mother, recovered from a coma, she told her that she had a relationship with Christian, Jack's father.

Claire and Jack
(ABC)

Almost Family

While Almost Family didn't see much success, it centered on only child Julia Bechley who finds out that her father, a fertility doctor, helped hundreds of women get pregnant using his own sperm.

That means Julia had plenty of secret siblings, including the online dating guy who she hooked up with (yikes), but the focus remained on her new half-sisters, former friend, Edie Palmer, and retired Olympic athlete, Roxy Doyle.

On Almost Family Season 1 Episode 2, Julia struggles with her identity while Roxy gets closer to Leon. But what's going on with Edie? Read our review!

The post Almost Family Season 1 Episode 2 Review: Related AF appeared first on TV Fanatic.

]]>
The issue of identity is a strong on on Almost Family Season 1 Episode 2.

Not only is Julie struggling with her new place in a possible sea of siblings, but Roxy is trying to find herself, and Edie is exploring a new side of her.

There's plenty to unpack this hour. So, let's get started.

Shocked at the Situation - Almost Family Season 1 Episode 2
(JoJo Whilden/FOX)

Julia has an identity crisis. She's very upset with her father and rightfully so.

What he did was beyond wrong. Unfortunately, he still doesn't see what he did as wrong; he only sees it as helping people.

Related: Almost Family Season 1 Episode 1 Review: Pilot

Leon can't convince Julia otherwise either.

But on some level, she might be angry at him for the wrong reasons.

She seems angrier that she's not the only little girl in his life anymore.

A New Father - Almost Family Season 1 Episode 2
(JoJo Whilden/FOX)

Now, he has several little girls and possibly even little boys. Who knows how many children he fathered.

However, what is grinding at Julia is that two of these women have become tied up in her life.

Both Edie and Roxy are taking away parts of her relationship with her father.

Julia was always the one who looked after and protected him.

Edie Struggles - Almost Family Season 1 Episode 2
(JoJo Whilden/FOX)

Now, Edie is handling Leon's case, and Roxy is hanging out having fun with Leon.

He's spreading himself around, and Julia doesn't like it.

It's  not that she doesn't want to see her father go free. She knows he's guilty, but it's more complicated than that.

Related: Bluff City Law Review: Season 1 Episode 3: 25 Years to Life

Sure, Leon should have informed his patients of what he was doing. But he gave them all something they've always wanted.

That isn't to say what he did was right, but he did give people a dream.

What's weird though is that he's been tracking the "exceptional" kids. Why is he doing that?

In Trouble - Almost Family Season 1 Episode 2
(JoJo Whilden/FOX)

Did he pick special women to impregnate so he could see how their genes mixed? Was it all an experiment to satisfy his ego?

Leon has some serious mental issues, but he's not curtailing his behavior with any of his daughters.

He wants to repair his relationship with Julia, but he's also diving in deep with Roxy, and even trying to get close to Edie.

So, this is why it has become an issue with Julia.

Bad Dreams - Almost Family Season 1 Episode 2
(JoJo Whilden/FOX)

She's especially jealous of Roxy's sudden closeness with Leon.

Roxy and Leon's relationship is odd and endearing at the same time.

She's messed up big time. She's had her own identity issues and now she's found a piece of herself that she wants to get to know better.

Related: The Blacklist Season 7 Episode 1 Review: Louis T. Steinhil

Roxy's so desperate for attention and for someone to understand her, she's not looking at the situation with clear eyes.

It's clear she's always had a rocky relationship with her parents, but how she lashed out at the man who raised her was unfair.

Roxy doesn't even know Leon other than she carries his blood.

Grey's Anatomy Round Table: Was Jackson's Big Farewell Underwhelming?!

It's perfectly understandable that she's curious and wants to know more, but she's rushing it.

That is her personality, but someone needs to pull her back a bit.

On Leon's part, he should be stepping away completely, not trying to draw her in.

Bluff City Law Season 1 Episode 2 Review: You Don't Need a Weatherman

Not only does he want to get to know her better, but he also wants to help her with her drug problem.

He shouldn't be doing that. He shouldn't have even spent as much time with Roxy as he did eating dinner and playing games.

It's difficult to know how to feel about Leon.

Amanda - Almost Family Season 1 Episode 2
(JoJo Whilden/FOX)

You want to like him, yet, he's not a likable person only in the sense of his actions.

There's nothing he can do to justify taking advantage of his position.

However, the children he's fathered are around, and nobody can take that away. It's confusing as a viewer because you can understand Roxy's feelings and desires, but the big issue is always at the back of the mind.

In Court Again - Almost Family Season 1 Episode 2
(JoJo Whilden/FOX)

It hinders the ability to get on board with any of the relationships. The way the relationships are developing is great, but it's hard to move past how those relationships came about in the first place.

But back to Roxy.

If Leon wants to repair his relationship with Julia, he's going to have to back off on Roxy.

Related: Emergence Season 1 Episode 3 Review: 2 MG CU Bid

Roxy is giving him the attention he wants. He also likes that she's on her side.

It's causing a conflict between Roxy and Julia for two reasons.

First, Julia is having her own issues coming to terms with her father's actions.

Getting Closer - Almost Family Season 1 Episode 2
(JoJo Whilden/FOX)

Second, she doesn't like the idea of how close Roxy and Leon are getting, even if it's only been a short time.

Roxy was right when she told Julia she has competition now. Julia doesn't know how to deal with that.

But Julia is also riding on the coattails of her father. If it wasn't for him, she wouldn't be who she is, especially at the clinic.

Related: Bluff City Law Season 1 Episode 1 Review: Change the World

And now that she's employed once again, she's going to be seeking her father's advice on how to go about things.

She has to know she can't run the clinic by herself.

Even though she doesn't know it yet, she can't trust Isaac, either.

Tim has No Clue - Almost Family Season 1 Episode 2
(JoJo Whilden/FOX.)

That side story will be interesting as it develops. Isaac has his own agenda.

He was looking to take over the clinic, but then Julia got in the way. But now he's going to use his relationship with Leon to get what he wants.

It's a big mess there.

Another big mess is Edie. She's got this thing going on with Amanda which is bizarre in itself.

Related; Emergence Season 1 Episode 2 Review: Camera Wheelbarrow Tiger Pillow

She shouldn't be having a romantic relationship with the other side while she's representing Leon.

That's a conflict of interest. It's surprising how many ethical issues are taking place in such a short period.

And now that Julia knows about Amanda and Edie, it's going to throw more coal into the fire.

Roxy is Happy - Almost Family Season 1 Episode 2
(JoJo Whilden/FOX)

There's so much going on, it's almost hard to keep track.

Still, the complications in everyone's life is interesting to watch.

It's time to take a look at how FOX's shows are holding up in the 2019-20 season. The Resident is already on the bubble, and Almost Family looks DOA.

We are just three weeks into the 2019-20 TV season, and there are already some big surprises.

FOX has some big decisions to make as it looks towards midseason.

With many shows on the bench, it's hard to imagine some of the more marginal performers sticking around for additional seasons.

The Resident Season 3 Cast
(FOX)

On top of that, the network is also leaning towards more unscripted content, and given the success of The Masked Singer and WWE Friday Night Smackdown, don't expect that to change.

That makes it difficult to exist as a scripted original series on the network.

Let's take a look at how the current scripted shows are performing and how their results bode for additional episodes and beyond.

9-1-1 Season 3 kicked off with a tsunami storyline got viewers talking for all the right reasons. It is currently up 19% in the demo and 20% in total viewers year-to-year.

9-1-1 Season 3 Episode 1 scored 11 million total viewers and a 2.6 rating in the demo when Live+7 is factored in. The show remains a success with both viewers and critics and will be around for years to come.

The Simpsons – Renewed

The Simpsons has already been renewed. The show will outlive us all at this stage. As always, however, the ratings are positively affected by football overrun.

Supervising Interns - The Simpsons
(FOX)

To date, The Simpsons Season 31 is averaging 4 million total viewers and a 1.5 rating. It is well ahead of last season by 25%.

The show doesn't play as well as some others on the DVR front, but it gains around 20% in Live+7.

Prodigal Son – Likely Renewal

Prodigal Son was the first new series to score a full-season order after two weeks of solid ratings. It took a minor hit this week, but it is still performing well enough to stick around.

But First - Tall - Prodigal Son Season 1 Episode 1
(David Giesbrecht / FOX)

Prodigal Son Season 1 is averaging 3.9 million viewers and a 1.0 rating in the demo. It does lose a lot of the 9-1-1 lead-in, but the show has proven to be a decent performer in delayed viewing, meaning there is an audience for it.

Prodigal Son Season 1 Episode 1 went from a 1.0 to a 1.8 rating with a week of DVR factored in. That's a big positive, and if the show can remain stable throughout the season, it should be a lock for renewal.

Bless The Harts – On the Bubble

FOX has tried to launch new comedies on Sundays over the last few seasons.

Bless The Harts is currently averaging 2.4 million total viewers and a 1.0 rating. That is thanks in large part to the football overruns that are propping up The Simpsons.

We need more date without overruns to make a firm decision. The series premiere only got modest boosts with a week of DVR factored in.

Empire – Ending

FOX's decision to end Empire may have been a surprising one, but after witnessing its ratings on Tuesdays, it's not difficult to understand why.

The Lyon Patriarch - Empire Season 6 Episode 1
(Chuck Hodes/FOX)

The show has been trending downwards for years, and Empire Season 6 is averaging 3 million viewers and a 0.9 rating. That's not terrible, but it's not great.

Related: Empire: Coming to an End!

This animated series is averaging 2.1 million viewers and a 0.9 rating.

The Resident – On the Bubble

The Resident Season 3 is off to a slow start on Tuesdays.

Related: TV Ratings Report: The Resident Down

It is averaging 3.8 million total viewers and a 0.8 rating in the demo. The show has never been a strong performer on the DVR front, but it could become one.

Unless it is pulling in a lot of viewers via FOX Now or Hulu, it may find itself at risk this season.

FOX has limited places on the schedule, and the fact of the matter is that the series is currently the second lowest-rated scripted one on the network.

Lamar - Tall - The Resident Season 3 Episode 2
(Guy D’Alema/FOX)

It fit like a glove out of 9-1-1 on Mondays, but it faces an uphill battle for a Season 4 renewal at this stage.

Almost Family – Likely Cancellation

Almost Family was given a healthy promotional campaign and even garnered the post-Masked Singer slot.

Related: Almost Family Season 1 Episode 1 Review: Connected

But it could only muster 2.7 million total viewers and a 0.7 rating out of a lead-in of 7 million viewers and a 2.0 rating.

It will not survive very long in that slot with those ratings, not when FOX could be propping up one of the better performing scripted series.

Shocked - Almost Family Season 1 Episode 1
(JoJo Whilden/FOX)

Look for Almost Family to be replaced in the coming weeks unless the ratings make a turnaround.

The Masked Singer – Renewed

We don't usually look at reality series because they are more challenging to predict, but The Masked Singer remains a bonafide hit.

It is currently averaging 7.7 million total viewers and a 2.3 rating in the demo. It is scoring gains of 44% in the demo with a week of DVR factored in.

Ken Jeong on THE MASKED SINGER
(Michael Becker/FOX)

Coming up at Midseason: MasterChef, Hell’s Kitchen, Last Man Standing, 9-1-1: LONE STAR, FILTHY RICH, DEPUTY, NEXT, OUTMATCHED, ULTIMATE TAG, DUNCANVILLE, and THE GREAT NORTH.

On Almost Family Season 1 Episode 1, Julia's life is turned upside down when her father's secrets are exposed. What did she find out? Find out in our review!

Being an only child isn't a bad thing, but when you find out you might have hundreds of siblings, life becomes a bit more complicated.

On Almost Family Season 1 Episode 1, we delve into the world of an unscrupulous fertility doctor and the effects of his actions.

Finding Out the Truth - Almost Family Season 1 Episode 1
(JoJo Whilden/FOX)

Almost Family tries to deal with several issues during it's first hour, but the overall theme is about family and what makes people family.

Julia works for her father, Dr. Leon Bechley, a respected and successful fertilifty doctor.

Related: New Amsterdam Season 2 Episode 2: The Big Picture

She's an only child and seemingly adores her father until she learns that he might have "fathered" hundreds of children to give his clients a better chance at bringing a baby into the world.

It's not an easy pill to swallow. She wants to hate her father but also wants to protect him.

Trying to Explain - Almost Family Season 1 Episode 1
(JoJo Whilden/FOX)

She has several issues of her own like not being in a stable relationship and resorting to lunch dates with guys and then having sex with them in the bathroom.

She's looking for fulfillment in all the wrong places. Maybe it's not a man she needs but friends to help put her on the right track.

Related: Bluff City Law Season 1 Episode 1 Review: Change the World

Rather quickly, she gets her wish in the form of two sisters. One, Edie, is an enemy of sorts because she stole Julia's old boyfriend. The other one is Roxy, an athlete with an attitude.

Julia is quick to accept them both into her world once they learn they're related. However, I'm not necessarily sure I buy how quickly the three become friends.

Get that Cup of JOe - Almost Family Season 1 Episode 1
(JoJo Whilden/FOX)

She barely knows Roxy only having met her in the clinic. And she has a bad history with Edie. Yet, they all come together and by the end of the hour are sitting around the table like old friends.

Along with that, Julia is trying to deal with her father's revelation, Roxy is having problems with her career and her parents, and Edie is having marital problems.

Related: Bluff City Law Season 1 Episode 2: You Don't Need a Weatherman

The story and the characters are interesting enough, but whether or not it can sustain its momentum for an entire season is unclear.

And I hate to say it, but where the story might be going is entirely predictable.

Explaining it All - Almost Family Season 1 Episode 1
(JoJo Whilden/FOX)

Julia and Leon will struggle with their relationship. Julia and Tim might get back together now that Edie has wandered down a different path.

Julia is going to help Roxy with her drug and personality issues. Leon may or may not go to jail.

Related: American Horror Story Season 1 Episode 1 Review: Camp Redwood

There will be lawsuits, and other siblings will enter the three main characters' lives providing some texture.

It's not necessarily bad, but it's not fresh either.

What to Do? - Almost Family Season 1 Episode 1
(JoJo Whilden/FOX)

The theme of what makes a family is the most appealing. And that's going to be a theme that is heavily explored as the three women delve into their new relationships with each other.

They work well together, and they make a great team, but at the end of the day, will we care?

Related: Emergence Season 1 Episode 1 Review: A Compelling Mystery

Julia trying to protect and support her father is understandable. He's her father, and the love a child has for a parent is like no other.

However, as the severity of Leon's activities expand, it might be difficult to have sympathy for her character.

Shocked - Almost Family Season 1 Episode 1
(JoJo Whilden/FOX)

She already has a woe is me complex. She's complained about working for her father, not pursuing her dreams of becoming a doctor herself, and then dealing with her father's current issues.

It's trite and makes her the least interesting out of the three.

Edie isn't any better. Her marriage is faltering. Instead of trying to work things out, she decides to engage in an affair with another woman who turns out to be the prosecuting attorney in Leon's case.

Related: Mayans M.C. Season 2 Episode 5 Review: Xquic

That leaves the door open for Tim and Julia to rekindle their college romance.

Maybe everyone will be happy all around, who knows. But again, who cares?

Roxy is my favorite out of the three, but she's also cliched.

Questioning - Almost Family Season 1 Episode 1
(JoJo Whilden/FOX)

She's a former ex-Olympic athlete with a drug and attitude problem. She doesn't get along with her parents who she thinks are trying to smother her.

Now, she's found two kindred spirits in Julia and Edie who will inevitably help get her life back on track. They might even help her reconnect with her parents.

And in essence, the three of them will become not only blood family but a family — people you can depend on in times of need.

That's not much to chomp on here especially if there isn't a fresh perspective. And it doesn't appear that a fresh perspective is what we're getting with this series.

What did you think of Almost Family?

Good Old Dad - Almost Family Season 1 Episode 1

Are you on board with the story of the three women?

Do you think they became friendly too fast especially considering the history between Edie and Julia?

How will Julia deal with her father's problems?

Are you interested in another morality play about people abusing their positions?
