An unequivocal and unbearable truth of the 90 Day Fiancé franchise is that it has surpassed problematic in enabling and exploiting Angela Deem’s abusive behavior.

And frankly, it needs to stop.

Angela Isn’t the “Queen” of 90 Day Fiancé; She’s a Blight

No, it’s nothing new that reality TV has essentially made stars out of problematic individuals.

It’s par for the course with the genre, and it has become so deeply embedded in the culture of reality television that it’s now treated as a shortcut or fast track to celebritydom.

But 90 Day Fiance has made some twisted form of starlet out of Angela Deem, and we’ve long since surpassed it being acceptable.

The woman should no longer have a platform of any kind, and yet the franchise gleefully lays it out for her, allowing her to be hours late to reunion specials or holding them up, rolling out their rendition of a red carpet for her antics.

But here’s the thing: Her antics were never fun or entertaining.

Angela’s Reign of Abuse and Terror Has Gone on For Too Long

Since her first appearance in 2018, Angela was problematic.

She’s been a part of this franchise and airing her and her family’s dirty laundry for SIX years!

It’s been six years too long since the network found more value in her disturbing behavior as a selling and promotion point rather than realizing that enough is enough and putting their foot down.

For six seasons, we’ve watched this woman dominate the franchise with some of the most grotesque and flagrantly abusive behavior (and there’s no shortage of that).

Angela’s abusive tendencies have become a staple of the series and one of their biggest promotional points for a three-part, dragged-out 90 Day Fiance: Happily Ever After? Tell All reunion special.

The 90 Day Fiance Franchise Exploits Angela’s Abuse for Ratings

For the past two installments from 90: Day Fiance: Happily Ever After After? Season 8 Tell-All, they’ve fixated on the drama of Angela and Michael’s marriage.

The season finally saw Michael arriving in America after a seven-year battle to get to the States.

Unsurprisingly, it was rocky territory, with Angela calling him out for the umpteenth time for verbally cheating on her and accusing him of scamming her.

By then, it had been clear to every soul in America that these two are toxic for one another and that the relationship is abusive.

Yet, the series subjected us to this focus as if it was a celebratory occasion that Michael finally made it to America.

Michael’s Arrival in America Only Highlighted Angela’s Abuse More

From that point forward, it became increasingly more disturbing to witness Michael directly in Angela’s environment with no place to go and having to deal directly with all of her toxicity and negativity.

Michael arrived at an unkept home, and Angela repeatedly joked about his arrival, meaning that he could clean it for her.

The charged nature of that statement and the power dynamic between the two was just another in a million instances over the years that didn’t sit right in one’s spirit.

But alas, it was just another “fun” thing to insert into the season’s edits for entertainment.

The season also seemed to delight in providing a “gasp-worthy” moment: Angela berating Michael and spitting on him for yet another imagined slight and, ironically, for lacking decorum.

There’s a Disturbing Disparity in the Response to Domestic Abuse Against Men

There is an appalling double standard when it comes to the portrayal of domestic abuse against men.

For many years, the series and many of its contestants have casually dismissed Angela’s antics under the guise of “That’s just Angela.”

Their peers’ passive approach and reaction to Angela’s behavior are types of complicity that leave little space to properly address issues.

The series very rarely calls Angela out for her actions; instead, it relies on them to deliver the “OMG” moments and drama that rake in the ratings and money.

Even the reunions and tell-alls accommodate and work around Angela’s aggressive, domineering, and abusive behavior rather than shut it down.

Angela Faces Zero Pushback or Accountability on 90 Day Fiance

The other series stars and even Shaun Robinson tiptoe around Angela’s feelings, giving this woman the impression that if she walks off the stage or decides to opt-out at the barest hint of criticism, then the entire franchise and ratings will fall apart like a house of cards.

It’s so far from the truth that it’s laughable.

For multiple seasons, viewers face the same setup: Angela gets all of this space to truly go off the rails, and no one does anything about it.

Angela shuts down the few stars who challenge her, and most of the others either deem the drama “too much” or openly express that they’re afraid of her.

Angela gets to essentially and emotionally hold everyone else hostage under the guise of providing entertainment, and by now, there’s a severe underestimation of what viewers are willing to tune into for anymore.

The Age of Angela Running Rampant Needs to End

This season, they did something unusual but with the full intent of maximizing viewers’ interest. The thought process behind sticking all of this season’s participants into a Tell-All House was sound.

For fans of the series, seeing everyone together under the same roof before they show up to unpack the season’s drama is a reality TV goldmine.

In many ways, the Tell All house delivered on that, giving us some of the series’s most likable and loathsome interactions.

But in the same vein, much of the buildup revolved around whether Angela and Michael would show up at the Tell All house at all.

We knew they likely would by now, but Angela loves to draw things out, make them dramatic, and have the grand diva entrance.

And the show? Well, they accommodate that in all its glory.

90 Day Fiance’s Complicity in Angela’s Toxic Abuse of Michael is Unacceptable

Once she and Michael showed up, they forced the most toxic exchange between them yet on viewers.

It was uncomfortable to watch Angela display all the classic moves of a narcissistic abuser, including alienating Michael from everyone, trying to control who he spoke to and what he said, and rallying the house against him so that they all sided with her.

She was aggressive, loud, brash, and disregarding his personal space.

What we witnessed was flat-out verbal and emotional abuse on our screens, and everyone in the house bore witness to it.

But very few were willing to call it what it was, tiptoeing around Angela or laughing her off as “crazy” before digging into their own drama.

Commendably, an unexpected supporter arose in the form of Rob, the only other house guest and star of the season, who told Michael directly that what Angela was doing wasn’t right and called her behavior what it was: abuse.

There was one lone voice in the crowd amongst a bunch of individuals either too afraid or too fame-motivated to be honest about what was happening and call things as they were.

We spent so much time watching Angela demean, berate, and assault Michael that it was evident some Quinn King cohort was enthusiastically seeing dollar signs and ratings over safety.

The Unchecked Normalization of Angela’s Abuse is Irresponsible and Dangerous

The lack of intervention as things gradually escalated was abhorrent, yet it was par for the course of Angela and Michael’s entire existence in this series.

The Tell-All couch time was no better, with Michael unable to voice or express himself without Angela shutting him down or overtalking him.

He fielded accusations of scams and infidelity with the tone of the Tell All, somehow implying that his possible actions were somehow a catalyst to Angela’s behavior.

At this point, it doesn’t matter what Michael may or may not have done — nothing about Angela’s behavior is okay, nor should it be condoned.

Yet we’ll be heading into another section of this neverending Tell-All, and the entire hook for it via promotion is Michael taking a lie detector test.

By this point, it’s so sick and twisted that clearly, everyone involved has lost the plot entirely.

We’re privy to all the flagrant abuse and toxicity onscreen and have been for years.

There’s Reality Behind the Entertainment With Reality TV

And it only worsens as we hear bits and pieces about everything that has unfolded offscreen.

There are many bits of information pouring in, including how Michael fled her home without telling her and prompting law enforcement to track him down to ensure that he was okay.

He’s separated himself from her and spoken on social media and in interviews about needing the space and how he didn’t feel wanted, heavily implying he didn’t feel safe in the home with Angela.

He even specifically stated that he felt “scared” and spoke with the knowledge of someone who knows and feels that he doesn’t have much say in how he’s treated here as a Nigerian male immigrant in a relationship with a volatile American white woman.

I’ll call the thing the thing here; he has a valid reason to be wary.

Yet none of this hinders Angela’s presence throughout multiple series in the 90-Day Fiance franchise.

If the roles were reversed, the network would not continue enabling an abuser as a cash cow for the franchise.

We’ve surpassed the point where Angela’s continued presence going unchecked is anything close to acceptable or okay.

The cabler on Friday announced the third couple taking part in 90 Day: Last Resort, and it's a couple in need, for sure.

Angela Deem and Michael Ilesanmi have been a part of the franchise for years, but their relationship has been brimming with toxicity since their debut.

They don't communicate very well, and when they're apart, well, things tend to get worse for them.

Angela and Michael "are in love, but the long-distance relationship has taken a toll on them over the last five years, and now they find themselves a world apart physically and emotionally," TLC says of their relationship on the spinoff. 

"Loneliness has led them to make bad decisions and to be suspicious of one another."

"Can the retreat help them forgive, learn to trust again, bridge the gap in their communication, and figure out how to stay close despite the distance, or will old habits die hard and ultimately lead to the end of Angela and Michael's relationship?"

Many fans of the reality TV franchise have had enough of Angela's antics, but maybe they'll be able to connect with her as she dives into why her relationship with Michael is so fraught.

They have had plenty of laughs on-screen, but recently, it seems like the constant bickering has harmed their marriage.

"In a final attempt to salvage their relationships, each couple will participate in a couples retreat to determine whether or not they can heal old wounds," TLC revealed of the show earlier this month.

"Alongside a team of professionals, they'll actively navigate issues with trust, sex, jealousy, anger, and intimacy."

TLC confirmed Thursday that the rumors are true:

90 Day: The Last Resort is real.

According to the cabler, the series focuses on five couples who have "reached their breaking points."

"In a final attempt to salvage their relationships, each couple will participate in a couples retreat to determine whether or not they can heal old wounds," the promotional material states. 

"Alongside a team of professionals, they'll actively navigate issues with trust, sex, jealousy, anger, and intimacy."

"Explosive group therapies, intense couples' sessions, past life regressions, unique on-and-off-resort activities, and so much more ensue," TLC warns, adding:

"At the end of the retreat, each couple must decide if they will stay together or move on."

In a word? Whoa.

It seems the franchise is channeling Married at First Sight, which features several moments in which the couples can decide to stay together or move on.

Whether their decisions will have any lasting ramifications for their places in the franchise, we don't know.

TLC has yet to confirm which cast members are participating, but our sister site, The Hollywood Gossip, did some sleuthing to get answers.

Angela Deem will be present. There's no telling whether her on-off-again husband, Michael Ilesanmi, will appear in the flesh or if his appearances will be conducted remotely.

Well, we have some good news.

Host Shaun Robinson welcomes 90 Day superfans back for a second season, where personalities from across the franchise and across the world meet face-to-face for unexpected encounters, eclectic segments and in-depth interviews.

"Each fresh episode promises a medley of emotions as Shaun digs deep to go where no one else can, unlocking the most in-depth look ever at the stories and secrets to-date of franchise familiars," reads the logline.

That's a name I want to forget after 90 Day Fiance: Happily Ever After? Season 6 Episode 16.

I'm going to be honest. I was going to cover this season, but many of these couples are just so toxic that I put off watching it for as long as possible.

The initial allure of the franchise was the rotation of couples, but for some reason, TLC thinks we want to see the same couples across every single show in the franchise.

Let's get back to Angela. If you watch 90 Day Fiance: Happily Ever After? online, you know she's one of the most outspoken reality TV personalities out there.

In her prime, she made for good TV, but somewhere along the way, her treatment of Michael has somehow gotten worse, and she's no longer fun to watch.

Her new look blatantly seemed like a redemption arc to bring her back into good graces with the fans, but after witnessing her threaten Michael with divorce, ask to track his phone, and everything else she's done, it's time for the franchise to evolve and stop rewarding bad behavior.

One thing that irked me the most was that she accepted the ride home from the doctor without telling her husband. A week had passed, and I could only imagine the uproar if the roles were reversed.

If Michael doesn't answer the phone or says he's busy, she's quick to point the finger and accuse him of cheating. She gaslights him, plain and simple.

The incident with the psychic solidified that. I know she has so much confidence after her surgery and weight loss, but I don't think the workers on the tell-all are paid enough to have someone expose their breasts in the studio … in front of everyone.

Yes, Angela wanted to make a statement to Michael's family, but did she really need to stoop that low?

Michael can do so much better than Angela. He should find someone that doesn't combat his every word and someone who actually respects his family.

Angela does make for good TV, but she also makes for toxic TV, and it's high time the franchise opted not to reward bad behavior.

As for Natalie, I tried so many times to understand her stance, but every single time there was a glimmer of an issue between her and Michael, she rushed off without confronting it.

How is a relationship supposed to work when there's a lack of communication? In this case, Michael and Natalie were always destined for doom. Every single time a difficult conversation was on the horizon, she was nowhere to be found.

And while Trish would like the world to believe she didn't have anything to do with the breakdown of the relationship, she did. Trish knew straight away there was something off about Natalie, and she couldn't shake it.

Maybe Trish could tell this would end in heartbreak and wanted to shield her son.

Natalie living in Florida was a surprise. She moved so far away from Mike that there was no way they could repair their relationship.

The wider issue with Natalie was the allegations she made about people. We knew about her saying Mike's mom called her a hooker. That's an inflammatory accusation that could ruin someone's life, but Natalie was not open to understanding that Trish said "cooker."

What the tell-all confirmed was that Natalie wanted everyone to think she was a victim. The hooker comment was one thing, but saying that Uncle Beau stole her jewelry was something else.

Trish being on the set was a real shocker, and Natalie clearly realized no one felt sorry for her, so she apologized to Trish. I half-expected Trish to slap her for everything that happened. You never know with this show.

For all intents and purposes, Natalie and Mike are over, and given the rumors, Natalie has been filming for The Single Life, there's a good chance they will end their marriage officially very soon.

Natalie concealing the fact that she had left Mike took me by surprise. Didn't her mom notice that it was way sunnier whenever Natalie video called her?

There was never any sun in Sequim.

All of the other couples took a backseat during the first part of the Tell-All but having them comment on the events playing out made this one of the juiciest episodes in a while.

Jovi exposing Natalie was comical because she desperately wanted everyone to believe that she was playing this devoted wife. I did feel bad when Julia went off on Natalie about whether she would return to Ukraine now that her marriage is over.

Natalie had already been berated multiple times throughout the episode, and she didn't need Julia to kick her when she was down.

Julia loves to comment on other people's lives, and it's part of the reason why she's been in trouble so many times despite her short tenure with the franchise.

Did anyone else pick up on Angela getting close to Mike? Could you imagine these two ended up together? They both have such complicated personalities that you know they'd clash!

The tension is real and raw, but Natalie apologizes to Trish for what she said about her.

We didn't dig into much of the other couple's drama.

Their casting on the spinoff left fans with a bitter taste after it emerged that they split after just one year of marriage.

Mike's Uncle Beau leaked the news to In Touch Weekly, stating that they hadn't been together in months and that he, quite frankly, didn't want to see Natalie again.

But then the couple shot the tell-all for 90 Day Fiance Season 8, proving that they were still together at least to viewers.

If you watch 90 Day Fiance online, you know you could cut the tension between them with a knife on the stage at the reunion.

They were clearly emotionally checked out of the relationship, but there seemed to be a glimmer of hope on 90 Day Fiance Happily Ever After Season 6 Episode 1, which showed them to be happier than ever.

But we need to remember that the series picked up around a year ago, shortly after they first got married, and previews have teased Mike, apparently talking to mysterious women online.

It's been a lot for fans to digest, but fans have been adamant the couple is no more.

We know TLC will not want to leak plot details in advance because effectively it makes their spot on Happily Ever After? redundant.

But Natalie shocked fans everywhere when she seemingly confirmed the breakup.

Natalie asked her Instagram followers to go to a site to make her the next Maxim cover girl, and the bio of the contest page read that she's a part of “’90 day fiancé,’ season 7 and 8, ‘HEA,’ ‘Single life.’”

For those unaware, 90 Day Fiance: The Single Life focuses on the people who didn't find long-lasting love on the series.

Its freshman season features the likes of Fernanda, Danielle, Molly, and Big Ed as they attempt to find a new partner.

The series is a Discovery+ exclusive, but it's not hard to imagine that the second season has already been quietly ordered.

TLC films way in advance, so Natalie may have already filmed her scenes for the second season.

After fans questioned whether it meant the end for Mike and Natalie, the bio was updated to remove the Single Life.

It's possible TLC could cut what Natalie had filmed for the spinoff because they like to keep all of the storylines under wraps until transmission.

The hit 90 Day Fiance spinoff returned to the air on Sunday with an installment that found the couples trying to adjust to married life.

One of the most polarizing couples of 90 Day Fiance Season 8 returned, and took up a considerable amount of screentime.

Mike Youngquist and Natalie Mordovtseva have hardly had a smooth relationship, what with cheating allegations and Mike calling off the wedding on the morning it was supposed to go ahead.

Fans were shocked when they actually got married, and 90 Day Fiance: Happily Ever After Season 6 Episode 1 found them both on a more upbeat note.

They genuinely seemed happy with one another, which seemed like a foreign concept just a few weeks ago.

While it was filled with seemingly happy moments for them on the premiere, a preview for an upcoming episode found them at odds, once again.

The blowout fight appears to stem from Mike apparently getting messages from an unidentified woman, including explicit photos.

What looks like a nice dinner between the couple turned into a wild argument, with the following being said.

Natalie: Do you think I will get along with your friends?

Mike: You sometimes come off a little harsh. Everyone is like family-oriented…

Natalie: Maybe they shouldn't send naked pictures to you, then I will be polite.

Mike: You don't talk anymore. I'm going to take off.

Natalie: [To camera] A girl from Nevada. He said she's his friend, but she kept sending him [photos of] her boobs.

Those are some wild accusations, but given that their relationship was already built on shaky ground, another argument was inevitable.

Mike's Uncle Beau previously revealed that the pair had called it quits after almost a year of marriage, showing how behind in the times the TLC cameras are.

But, the recent tell-all was filmed just weeks ago, suggesting they rekindled their relationship at some point.

Then again, Beau could be baiting viewers, so they stay tuned. We'll only know when we tune in as the episodes play out … or unless either Mike or Natalie reveals what happened.

But they probably have a contract with TLC preventing them from spoiling storylines.

That's not to say they seemed connected at the tell-all. There were some wild accusations thrown around and Natalie didn't seem to want to be anywhere near Mike.

The current season's cast sans Stephanie was spotted in Los Angeles last month to shoot the sitdown that finds them talking about the season's biggest developments.

Stephanie posted a selfie around that time as fans questioned her involvement with the series and wrote the following:

“LA tell all?! I wasn’t there! More about that at a later time.”

As expected, fans have been questioning what went down, but there's a good chance TLC has severed ties the star after a single season on the series.

Earlier this year, Stephanie wrote in an Instagram comment that the people who work for the company deceived her and that she was sexually assaulted while shooting her scenes in Belize.

“These clusterf***s that work for this company are going to wish they never deceived me,” Stephanie wrote.

“I not only was raped while filming, but manipulated to keep filming after I begged to get off set after being bitten hundreds of times by sand flies. But no, they just needed a romantic dinner filmed with Ryan.”

She further added that she spent a great deal of time in the hospital “hooked to IV’s for the inflammation from the allergic reactions I had.”

She says producers “are unwilling to pay all my medical expenses.” She then left the following at the end of the message:

“My attorney started legal action today…stay tuned!!”

It's easy to see that producers did not want to include Stephanie because they are probably investigating her claims.

Fans wanting some closure for Stephanie's storyline will probably be happy to know that she plans on her own iteration of a Tell All.

If you watch 90 Day Fiance online, you know Stephanie started the season off in a relationship with Ryan, but she revealed to producers early on that she had slept with his cousin, Harris.

When Stephanie arrived in Belize, we got to see her reuniting with Ryan, only for the relationship to implode.

In the end, she wound up with Harris and spoke about starting the K1 Visa process to bring him to the U.S., despite him living with the mother of his children.

It's unclear whether the Tell All will include a segment about Stephanie, but if previous Tell Alls are any indication, cast who are not in attendance are typically not spoken about.

Entertainment Tonight broke the news Monday that Mike and Natalie, Julia and Brandon, and Jovi and Yara would appear in the upcoming season of the spin-off series.

The news comes just hours after the 90 Day Fiance Season 8 finale aired, so it's obvious TLC wanted to keep fans questioning which cast members made it down the aisle.

Mike and Natalie's relationship has been the topic of much discussion amongst fans of the series, largely because it feels like there's no connection between them.

Mike actually called their wedding day off two hours before the ceremony, leaving Natalie to pick up the pieces as she reacted to the news that her visa expired in three days.

Just when it seemed like they were calling it quits, Mike had a change of heart, and he and Natalie managed to put the past behind them to get married with mere hours remaining on Natalie's visa.

Those scenes were filmed a year ago, and if you keep up with the 90 Day Fiance news, you already know they've reportedly called it quits.

Uncle Beau did an interview with In Touch Weekly just days ago, in which he said they've been apart for several months.

But eagle-eyed fans noticed they were together in the clip for the two-part Tell All, which begins April 11. Given that the special was filmed weeks ago, it could hint that they are back together.

Either that or they've been asked to make it seem that way by TLC because they have enough footage of the couple post-marriage to include in the next season of Happily Ever After.

Jovi and Yara's relationship hit many snags, but their first season culminated in welcoming their first baby into the world.

Yara struggled due to Jovi being away with work in the early days of COVID-19, but the season ended on a hopeful note for them.

As for Julia and Brandon, the season was widely about Julia's attempt to get through to Brandon that she was not spending her days working on his family farm.

Now that they're married, they will probably move away from the farm and start a life, but I'm not sure Betty will allow them that courtesy.

TLC dropped the premiere date and the first trailer for Happy Ever After? Season 6 last month, while also confirming Elizabeth and Andrei, Kalani and Asuelu, Ronald and Tiffany, and Angela and Michael would all be featured.

Seven couples are a lot for the spin-off, but we're sure it won't be an easy road for any of them.
