Some shows don't know when to call it quits with polarizing characters. Check out our list of TV Characters Who Overstayed their welcome!

There is nothing more frustrating than a TV character who has overstayed their welcome.

Essentially, those characters go from adding value to the series to severely impacting the quality of a show that we otherwise know and love.

We compiled a list of television characters whose shows didn’t have the good sense to get rid of soon enough. Check it out!

The Faks – The Bear

Theodore Fak (Ricky Staffieri) and Neil Fak (Matty Matheson) on Season 3 of The Bear
(Courtesy of FX )

Seriously, what the fak is up with the Fak obsession on The Bear?

They add some levity to situations when you have a bunch of high-strung and emotional chefs and characters with a wide array of mental health issues or trauma trying to navigate the same space.

A little of the Faks could go a long way toward lightening the series’ tone and sometimes breaking up tension.

But it was painfully evident during the polarizing third season of The Bear that the series dished up a heaping dose of the Faks, and it was too much for many of us to bear.

When the palate cleanser requires its own palate cleanser, it’s no longer effective, right?

Kim Bauer – 24

Kim Bauer is in trouble once again on 24.
(24/ YouTube Screenshot)

Good grief, Kim Bauer was such a nuisance on 24.

No one managed to detract from Jack Bauer and whatever more compelling storylines he had going on than his trouble-magnet daughter.

Her side plots were like side quests that ultimately derailed the series, often throughout her reign.

Her presence often felt forced, and nothing was more grating than hearing Jack call her name because of yet another predicament she had thrown herself into.

Owen Hunt- Grey’s Anatomy

Running an Unusual Trauma - Grey's Anatomy Season 20 Episode 3
(Disney/Anne Marie Fox (ABC))

It’s not exactly an unpopular Grey’s Anatomy opinion that Owen Hunt is either one of the worst, most annoying characters or should’ve been gone long ago.

But some of us don’t have that much of an issue with Owen any more than we do with other characters in the series.

However, while Grey’s Anatomy excels with Kevin McKidd behind-the-camera directing, as he’s often responsible for directing some of the later seasons’ best episodes, there’s not much going for Owen Hunt on camera.

It feels like they don’t know what to do with the guy and have long since run out of storylines for him.

Noreen Fitzgibbons – Sweet Magnolias

Visiting Sullivans - Sweet Magnolias Season 3 Episode 2
(Courtesy of Netflix)

It’s quite apparent that the Magnolia triad is the heart of the series, and others must operate as supporting characters to them.

Frankly, anyone remotely close to an adversary of these ladies often posed a problem amongst fans. But if we’re being honest, Noreen overstayed her welcome after the initial drama of the first season.

Sure, she returned to the series during Sweet Magnolias Season 2 because Maddie felt Kyle needed some help.

However, the storyline felt forced, as did Noreen’s general presence overall.

The series already had a bloated cast, and there’s very little they can do with Noreen anymore, so there’s no real reason for her to be around.

It’s not even that she’s dislikable anymore, as opposed to how she may have come across in the first season, but it’s more so that the series could use any of the screentime they devote to her to focus on so many other characters who deserve it.

Stingray – Cobra Kai

D&D Lord -tall - Cobra Kai Season 5 Episode 9
(CURTIS BONDS BAKER/NETFLIX)

It’s all fun and games until it stops being fun.

Stingray was already an acquired taste and was a character who catered more towards those who appreciated the “cringe dude humor” that Cobra Kai can do so well.

He’s an overgrown man obsessed with all things Cobra Kai and essentially made the dojo his entire personality instead of getting anything that resembles an actual life.

But then the series quickly elevated his shtick to another level, and the frequency with which he appeared throughout the seasons became overkill.

They treated him like a fan favorite that the audience couldn’t wait to see again, shoehorning him into scenes like the bad habit he is and incorporating him in some of the most absurdly ridiculous ways that made you roll your eyes.

Seriously, why is a grown-ass man at a high school fighting teenagers? Enough!

Ani – 13 Reasons Why

The New Kid - 13 Reasons Why
(Phil Bray/Netflix)

Given the 13 Reason Why‘s nature, Ani’s serving as a narrator for the fourth season made little sense.

Ani was a confounding character who didn’t feel adequately written out from the beginning and had shoddy motivations for most of the season when not totally nonexistent.

She dominated a lot of the third season for a character who lacked depth and wasn’t sympathetic in the least.

And she was meddlesome and messy but not in a way that enhanced the plot.

Topper – Outer Banks

Topper - Outer Banks S03E06 (Tall)
(Jackson Lee Davis/Netflix)

Sure, he may or may not be nice to look at for some people, but does Topper add any real value to Outer Banks outside of that?

Nope!

Drew already serves as an antagonist, and Kook will wreak havoc on the Pogues, so they stopped needing Topper to contribute that aspect to the series.

But then they attempted to do this redemption for the character, and he became a begrudging ally for the Pogues sometimes, while also coming across as pathetic for consistently allowing Sara to manipulate and use him or take advantage of his feelings for her.

At this point, there’s no real reason for Topper to be around anymore, and it’s doubtful they’ll find anything worthwhile to do with his character.

Paige Lassiter- Virgin River

Paige Returns -tall - Virgin River Season 4 Episode 11
(Netflix)

It’s not so much that Paige herself has stuck around on Virgin River longer than necessary.

It’s the impact of his presence on the series, specifically Preacher’s story arc.

She was such a non-starter and a love interest for Preacher that it was frustrating to see the tease of something more for him not come to fruition.

But then Preacher had to take care of the child while she was on the run, and he covered for her when she killed her abusive ex. Now, Paige is long gone, and Preacher is facing the possibility of this murder investigation leading back to him and all types of consequences.

Paige’s presence has severely impacted Preacher’s love life, whether it was with Julia or now with Kaia.

We still know very little about Preacher as a character because his entire storyline during the series revolved around Paige.

Elias Voit – Criminal Minds: Evolution

(Michael Yarish/Paramount+)

We can’t help but reiterate that Voit’s presence on Criminal Minds: Evolution has become overkill.

Voit is not a bad villain or anything; he’s certainly interesting in his own right, and he’s provided a lot of content and tension.

Of course, Zach Gilford is great in the role.

However, the series stalls a great deal because this single character monopolizes so much time and space in the narrative at the expense of other great characters.

Maggie MacPherson – The Lincoln Lawyer

Maggie McPherson - The Lincoln Lawyer Season 2 Episode 6
(Lara Solanki/Netflix)

Of all Mickey’s ex-wives with whom he has to cross paths, Maggie continues to be the most frustrating.

Outside of serving as their daughter’s mother, Maggie didn’t offer anything of interest to the series, and it was difficult to connect with or care about her when she felt more adversarial to Mickey than an actual antagonist.

Maggie just doesn’t standout on a series full of interesting and charismatic characters. The love story between Mickey and Maggie is stale, and the show has struggled to incorporate her character in a way that makes her feel overly important.

Even when she was involved more in the first season of The Lincoln Lawyer, she still felt disconnected from everything. And it only got worse in season 2.

It doesn’t help that her character is kind of snooze in general. If the series decided to write her out completely, nothing would really change.

Maggie never should’ve had a significant role in the series in the first place.

Rumplestiltskin – Once Upon a Time

Rumpelstiltskin - Once Upon a Time Season 1 Episode 6
(Courtesy of ABC)

Throughout the Once Upon a Time, Rumplestiltskin evolved from a multidimensional villain to a one-dimensional hero and steadily switched between those roles and everything in between until the end.

While Robert Carlyle was absolutely fantastic in the role, it became evident over time that the desire to keep such a talent on the series surpassed the plot and the necessity of his presence.

After an incredibly long and complicated journey, there was little for the series to do for Rumplestiltskin after he found his son.

Sylar – Heroes

A True Monster
(NBC/Adam Taylor)

Sylar was one of the most fascinating and entertaining villains during the first season of Heroes.

Frankly, Zachary Quinto could do no wrong in the role, and in many ways, the series thrived because of his portrayal of this character.

But it still doesn’t change the fact that Sylar stuck around much longer than necessary.

The mark of a great villain is knowing when to call it quits and maybe even sticking to that original premise in the first place.

Trying to add too much depth to Sylar and having him flip-flop between villain and hero didn’t serve the character or the series well, and it was clear the writers lost sight of what to do with him.

Felicity Smoak – Arrow

Felicity and Barry - Arrow Season 8 Episode 10
(Colin Bentley/The CW)

Once upon a time, Felicity was a decent character who added value to the Arrow and the Arrowverse and the plot.

But then she became a perfect example of what happens when the fans have too much say in a “favorite” character and when a relationship starts to overshadow the rest of the series.

Felicity was shoehorned into way too many plots beyond reason, which began to sour viewers’ experience of the series, even for those who may have once enjoyed the character.

And if it wasn’t enough that she had that effect on Arrow, the issue with her spilled into other series, like The Flash, as well.

Can you think of a TV show that had a perfect ending until the network added on that final season? Check out these series that should've quit while they were ahead.

The post Not All TV Shows Needed That Final Season appeared first on TV Fanatic.

A large part of creating a quality TV show is knowing when to wrap it up.

No writer wants their series to end before the story has been completed, but letting it go on past its natural resolution can tarnish its reputation entirely.

Networks might still get some views, but is the extra season really worth ruining all the excellence that came before it?

We put together some examples of shows that should've quit while they were ahead.

Parks and Recreation

To be fair, there wasn't anything bad about the final season. It was more unnecessary than anything else.

Each viewer is different, and some people need that time jump to see where the characters are headed in the future.

However, it felt off and didn't quite go with the rest of the show. The Parks and Recreation Season 6 finale could have been the perfect stopping point with a few tweaks for closure.

Fringe

The problem with Fringe Season 5 is that it had no impact on the story, whatsoever.

It was cool to see what Peter and Olivia's daughter would be like, but everything that happened in the final season was erased in the series finale.

The only difference is that Walter wasn't there, as he had to sacrifice himself and go to the future during the last few minutes of the show.

There were definitely some entertaining aspects, but we could've done without it.

Chuck

No matter which way you look at it, a lot of fans were unhappy with the ending of Chuck.

Although some hope was offered for Chuck and Sarah in the show's final moments, the last season was heavy with despair.

Due to Sarah's memory loss, which is never fully resolved, it felt like a completely different show than the one the audience had initially invested in.

Once Upon a Time

The majority of the time, viewers become invested in the characters more than the story. We care about the story because it affects the people we've become attached to, and we enjoy watching their ups and downs.

After Once Upon a Time Season 6, the show lost almost all of its essential cast members, making the final season weak and pointless.

The sixth season would have closed out the series perfectly, with either a few minor adjustments or an additional episode to send the characters back to the Enchanted Forest.

13 Reasons Why

Forget about the last season, this one didn't need the last three.

13 Reasons Why should've stayed a mini-series like it was originally intended to be, rather than overstaying its welcome due to its high viewership.

After Hannah's story was over, it seemed as if the writers were scrambling for more ways to make the characters suffer, and we got tired of watching it.

The show was no longer about its title, or title character, and just got more hollow and depressing every season.

The Office

By textbook definition, it was an ensemble, but The Office never should have continued after Steve Carell's departure.

Michael Scott was quite literally the star of the show and the one who forced the characters together in his hilarious attempts at commodity. Although they tried to replace him, no one else could ever live up to Michae's legacy.

The series became boring and bland, and Dwight and Jim's shenanigans were one of the only reasons it didn't fade out completely.

Veronica Mars

Fans everywhere were ecstatic when Hulu announced they would be producing a Veronica Mars revival

However, the internet ended up in a frenzy when the show decided to bring back the series simply to kill off a main and fan-favorite character. The worst part about the ending was that fans funded the Veronica Mars movie in 2014, in the hopes of getting closure for the leading couple.

The revival shattered everything fans rallied so hard for, making us wish that she show never would've started up again, in the first place.

The 100

The series still has two more episodes before it wraps up for good, and fans are already done with it.

Not only was Bellamy missing for almost the entirety of the season, but he was uselessly shot and killed by his best friend, leaving fans shocked and outraged.

For fans who spent the past seven years believing Bellamy and Clarke would end up together, it was a low blow.

The direction that the series took appeared to have more to do with behind the scenes issues than authentic storytelling, which is one of the reasons viewers have trouble accepting the final season, at all.

Pretty Little Liars

There were so many A's we couldn't keep track of them all. It began to reach a point where enough was enough.

Besides a few exceptions, time jumps rarely work well on TV, and Pretty Little Liars was best in a high school setting. The Perfectionists, the Pretty Little Liars spinoff, was set in college, yet only went on for one season.

The show should have given all the shippers their endgames at the end of Pretty Little Liars Season 6 and called it quits.

New Girl

Does anyone actually like the final season of New Girl? Considering that it wasn't even supposed to happen, it felt like a forced mess.

Schmidt and Cece's daughter was probably the only upside, as even Nick and Jess's proposal and wedding was a letdown.

While we did want more of a resolution from Nick and Jess's relationship, after they kissed in what was supposed to be the final shot of the show, their send-off ended up seeming lazy and half-assed.

The Vampire Diaries

You could blame The Vampire Diaries' downward spiral on the loss of Elena Gilbert, but, The Vampire Diaries' drop in quality started the moment that Klaus and his family left for New Orleans.

For many fans, Damon and Elena's relationship kept the show afloat, and Katherine Pierce's presence always upped the entertainment value, but after all that was gone, there was next to nothing left.

And, to be honest, we could've done without the Steroline storyline.

To say that 13 Reasons Why Season 4 was a waste would be the understatement of the century.

The controversial Netflix series had an intricately plotted and emotionally driven freshman season, but the show's purpose died when we learned what led to Hannah Baker's untimely demise.

Hollywood has been known to milk shows for all their worth, and that's why we witnessed Netflix beat a dead horse three seasons in a row.

While it's difficult to forgive the terrible storylines, 13 Reasons Why Season 4 actually got some of the characters right during its final season.

The series had some questionable storylines over the course of its run, but with faux school shootings, Clay completely losing his grip on reality, and other outlandish things, it seemed like all hope for worthwhile developments were dashed.

Alex coming to terms with his sexuality is the type of storyline I would have expected the show to botch. Him falling for Zach, only for Zach to shut him down, and continue to be friends with him was actually a breath of fresh air.

There has been simmering chemistry between them for a while now, but allowing them to navigate their friendship in a platonic way worked as opposed to them being forced together for fan service.

Alex always questioned his place in the world, even when he seemed to have it together in the flashbacks during 13 Reasons Why Season 1.

Despite some major apprehension on his part, he was pursued by not one, but two other men during the final season. Winston, despite his flaws, seemed to have genuine feelings for him.

But Winston was only really added to the regular cast to stir the pot and expose what really happened to Bryce so that he could clear Monty's name.

Charlie, who has spent most of his time on the periphery revealing he had long-held feelings for Alex, took me by surprise, but their connection was undeniable.

As far as genuine people go on this series, Charlie wins by a landslide. Credit where credit is due, this is not a pairing I would have expected going into the season.

But it also didn't feel forced.

The series also got Justin's battle with drugs right. Brandon Flynn deserves awards for his acting throughout those final episodes.

As far as character arcs go, Justin's was the most rounded in the end. It moved along at the right pace throughout all four seasons, but it was inevitable that it would culminate in tragedy.

The pressure of holding on to so many secrets, coupled with the death of his mother, certainly made it seem like he would return to taking drugs.

Going cold turkey could have been a recipe for disaster, and even though it seemed like he was definitely about to die, it did not play out the way I expected it to.

The series goes from zero to 100 quickly, amping up the drama in the process, but Justin dying of AIDS was brutal.

He battled his demons and somehow came out the other end, only to be taken when he had regained control of his life. Flynn played every single beat of this character to perfection.

Clay was in the driving seat for the entire series, but somewhere along the way, Justin became the voice of reason and the person who felt like there was more to life than being filled with hate.

The show highlights that, even in recovery, nothing is guaranteed. Justin recognizing the error of his ways was the first step to recovery.

He had made that first step on countless occasions, and there was no way of telling whether he would continue to straddle that fine line between a clean life or a life that involved him relying on narcotics.

To many, killing Justin off in such a manner is cruel, but to others, it helps to show that there is more to addiction than a lot of people know. Just because you're in recovery, it doesn't mean that the complications are gone.

13 Reasons Why has never veered far away from controversial topics, and although it's painful to admit, Justin's death will help educate more people about the pitfalls about addiction and recovery.

Another big thing the series got right this time was Ani.

She was forced down our throats on 13 Reasons Why Season 3 because of the way the writers hastily introduced her. Grace Saif garnered a lot of backlash as a result, and it all came down to shoddy writing.

The New Kid - 13 Reasons Why
(Phil Bray/Netflix)

Saif seemed much more comfortable throughout the final season in the role, and that's largely because the writing for her character had improved.

Even if people did not like her introduction, Ani was a crucial part of the story after Bryce's murder.

The new and improved Ani felt organically linked to the characters and their struggles, and her actions actually made sense.

Saif brought great vulnerabilty to Ani, and the college interview was particularly telling. She was a teenager dealt a bad hand, and desperate to find her place in the world.

She struggled fitting in and found herself with a group of friends that loved her for who she was, and the character was not the one-dimensional person we met a year ago.

13 Reasons Why - Tony Padilla
(Netflix)

Since we're here and the show has been put out of its misery, we'll talk about something that was frustrating: The tone of the show completely changed vs. Season 3.

Instead of playing out like a teen drama, there were cheap horror tricks thrown in, and it was problematic because it felt like a serial killer was going to pop up at any moment and kill the characters.

I'm all for shows switching things up, but it was too far and put too much emphasis on all of the characters meeting the ghosts of the deceased.

Yes, the people the characters were seeing were haunting them in some way, but we didn't need all of the cast to go toe-to-toe with a ghost to get the gist of what was going on.

23 Actors Saddled with Terrible Roles

Being haunted by your demons is one thing, but the show seemingly went the supernatural route during its final episodes.

13 Reasons Why Season 4 arrives on Netflix in one week, and the streamer has dropped a new sneak peak.

The clip involves Winston (Deaken Bluman) trying to get answers from Ani (Grace Saif) following Monty's death.

"Tell me what really happened and I swear to you I'll never mention it again, to anyone," he sais to a clearly shocked Ani.

"Just tell me what really happened."

Unfortunately for Winston, Ani has the best poker face out there, and gives him the following response:

"I don't know."

It's an awkward scene, for sure, and Winston leaves with the following:

"Why lie to me? What good does that do?"

Indeed, there would be no show if these teenagers told the truth.

Through three seasons, we've had a suicide, an almost school shooting, sexual assault, and murder.

The New Kid - 13 Reasons Why
(Phil Bray/Netflix)

It's been an exhausting series, and with us heading into the final season, there has to be some consequences for the characters.

Alex was the person who killed Bryce, but continues to live a free life. That is something that will change if Winston continues his pursuit of the truth.

"Everything has led to this," reads the official logline from Netflix.

"In the powerful final season of 13 Reasons Why, Liberty High School's Senior Class prepares for graduation."

"But before they can say goodbye, the crew of friends will have to band together one last time to keep a dangerous secret buried, try to make peace with the past four years, and face final, heartbreaking choices that might alter their lives forever."

The cast of 13 Reasons Why includes Dylan Minnette as Clay Jensen, Alisha Boe as Jessica Davis, Brandon Flynn as Justin Foley, Miles Heizer as Alex Standall, Grace Saif as Ani Achola, Christian Navarro as Tony Padilla, Ross Butler as Zach Dempsey, Devin Druid as Tyler Down, Timothy Granaderos as Montgomery de la Cruz, Anne Winters as Chloe, Deaken Bluman as Winston Williams, Tyler Barnhardt as Charlie St. George, Austin Aaron as Luke Holiday, Inde Navarrette as Estela de la Cruz, RJ Brown as Caleb, Steven Weber as Principle Bowen, Brenda Strong as Mrs. Walker, Amy Hargreaves as Mrs. Jensen, Josh Hamilton as Matt Jensen, Mark Pellegrino as Deputy standall, and introducing Jan Luis Castellanos as Diego Torres.

Will Clay Jensen be the first character to crack following the cover-up of Bryce's murder?

Netflix on Wednesday dropped the official trailer for 13 Reasons Why Season 4, and we have our mystery for the final season.

During the show's third season, fans witnessed most of the characters save Alex from the law to pin the murder of Bryce on Monty.

Unfortunately for Monty, he did not get to plead his innocence because he was brutally murdered while in jail.

But fear not, it looks like justice could be served.

Clay Looks for Answers - 13 Reasons Why
(Netflix)

Winston, who slept with Monty on multiple occasions, knows the truth, and the trailer confirms that he is not going to let the teenagers get away with what they did.

Indeed, the teenagers are greeted with writing on the wall that seems to allude that Bryce was not murdered by Monty.

Clay is visiting a psychiatrist, who thinks there is more to Clay than meets the eye, and that appears to be one of the bigger storylines throughout the final episodes.

The characters have been through a lot, but the trailer does not give us the sense that they will all be getting happy endings.

We're not even sure they all deserve happy endings.

It's almost time to say goodbye to 13 Reasons Why.

Netflix today announced that the fourth and final season of the hit drama series would bow on the streamer Friday, June 5.

In the series' final season, Liberty High School's Senior Class prepares for graduation.

Clay Looks for Answers - 13 Reasons Why
(Netflix)

But before they say goodbye, they'll have to keep a dangerous secret buried and face heartbreaking choices that could impact their futures forever.

The Season 4 cast includes Dylan Minnette as Clay Jensen, Alisha Boe as Jessica Davis, Brandon Flynn as Justin Foley, Miles Heizer as Alex Standall, Grace Saif as Ani Achola, Christian Navarro as Tony Padilla, Ross Butler as Zach Dempsey, Devin Druid as Tyler Down, Timothy Granaderos as Montgomery de la Cruz, Anne Winters as Chloe, Deaken Bluman as Winston Williams, Tyler Barnhardt as Charlie St. George, Austin Aaron as Luke Holliday, Inde Navarrette as Estela de la Cruz, RJ Brown as Caleb, Steven Weber as Principle Bowen, Brenda Strong as Mrs. Walker, Amy Hargreaves as Mrs. Jensen, Josh Hamilton as Matt Jensen, Mark Pellegrino as Deputy Standall and introducing Jan Luis Castellanos as Diego Torres.

13 Reasons Why Season 3 wrapped on an ominous note, with Monty taking the fall for Bryce's murder.

However, he was brutally murdered in prison.

The real killer, Alex, walked free, meaning that justice was not served.

Winston, who had a fling with Monty, knows that Monty could not have committed the crime, so there's no telling what will happen in the final episodes.

Jessica's New Job - 13 Reasons Why
(David Moir/Netflix)

13 Reasons Why initially focused on a group of teenagers as they came to terms with the death of Hannah Baker, who also left behind cassette tapes explaining why she came to the decision to end her life.

As the series progressed, it tackled other important topics.

Despite touching on big topics, the series has struggled to maintain the quality of the iteration.

Many fans and critics were unimpressed with the direction of the series, especially the murder mystery surrounding Bryce.

Maybe the series would have been better off in a limited capacity.

13 Reasons Why - Tony Padilla
(Netflix)

Still, there will be a lot of people eager to find out how it ends.

Netflix also dropped a video of a table read of the final season, with the cast assembling one last time to read through the scripts.

Watch it below.

What are your thoughts on the series coming to a close?

Are you ready to say goodbye?

With the new year fast approaching, there are some ships we wish we could forget altogether. What television couples do you want to leave in 2019?

The post These Couples Need To Be Left in 2019 appeared first on TV Fanatic.

]]>
Whether they broke up this year or they're still going strong, there are some couples we want to leave in the past.

They either have a lack of chemistry, a lack of respect for each other, or are simply better off as friends. Whatever the reason is for our dislike, we're ready to embrace some new relationships with the new year.

We created a list below of 13 couples who need to stay in 2019!

Nick and Nancy – Nancy Drew

A Clue - Nancy Drew Season 1 Episode 3
(Dean Buscher/The CW)

Nancy and Nick were cute originally, but the more Nancy Drew Season 1 goes on, the more obvious it is that Nancy will never be able to open up to Nick the way that she needs to.

Nick deserves someone who will be honest with him, and Nancy deserves someone she doesn't feel like she needs to hold back around.

There are characters on the show who would be a better fit for both of them, and it's time to let go and move on to bigger and better things.

Tim and Rachel – The Rookie

Out of all the pairings on The Rookie, Tim and Rachel haven't had much of an impact on the story or the audience.

Rachel isn't a bad character, and her chemistry with Tim isn't horrible, but The Rookie could do better.

Besides, is anyone else hoping for an eventual romance between Tim and Lucy?

Rue and Jules – Euphoria

There's no denying that Rue and Jules were cute at first. All viewers were rooting for them to get together during the beginning of the series.

However, Jules didn't always treat Rue the way that she deserved to be treated, and Rue ended up spending a good amount of time repairing her relationship with Lexi.

It may not be a popular opinion, but Rue and her best friend would make a much better and healthier couple than the alternative.

Jane and Ryan – The Bold Type

Jane and Pinstripe were an incredible couple until Ryan ruined everything.

Our hearts broke for Jane when she found out about Ryan's infidelity, yet she decided to give him a second chance

While we respect Jane's choice, the spark between the couple is gone, and a relationship that was once so beloved feels tainted. Odds are, it'll fizzle out.

Dex and Miles – Stumptown

Dex and Miles's dynamic has been complicated ever since Stumptown Season 1 Episode 1.

We won't deny that the two have had some great moments, but their relationship is based on lies and deceit.

Sorry, but that doesn't usually make for a very healthy couple.

Simone and Chidi – The Good Place

Soulmates - The Good Place Season 4 Episode 5
(Colleen Hayes/NBC)

Simone and Chidi have been together two times too many. They had mild chemistry, but they never worked as a couple.

Their relationship didn't end well the first time, and it definetely didn't end well the second.

Chidi and Eleanor may not have been actual soulmates, but as Michael said himself, soulmates are made, not found. It would be a slap in the face for them to end up with anyone other than each other.

Lucifer and Eve – Lucifer

Very few viewers supported the romance between Lucifer and Eve, given that Lucifer spent the entire show in love with Chloe.

Although they were a trainwreck as a couple and Eve constantly tried to bring out the worst side of Lucifer, Eve was a great addition to the cast.

We may want to leave their relationship in the past, but hopefully, Eve will stick around in the future.

Jackson and Maggie – Grey's Anatomy

Jackson and Maggie's relationship has been off and on, so we're never quite sure where they stand.

But with the new year approaching, we think it's time for Grey's Anatomy to hit the stop button on this couple once and for all.

None of Jackson's relationships have ever come close to matching the chemistry he had with April, so this is us begging the show to bring her back in 2020.

Isobel and Noah – Roswell, New Mexico

We couldn't be more thankful that Noah is out of the picture. Isobel and Noah's marriage is something that we, along with Isobel, long to forget.

Isobel deserves a love interest that doesn't try to kill her, and marries her for love, rather than to carry out his creepy and twisted agenda.

Isobel might benefit from some time alone in Roswell, New Mexico Season 2, but when she's ready, hopefully, the writers have something epic in store for her.

Bellamy and Echo – The 100

It's no secret than Bellamy and Echo aren't the most popular couple among fans. Well, it's for a reason.

These two have been together for long enough, and it's about time for The 100 to stop trying to force chemistry that isn't there.

With the last season premiering in 2020, we're still holding out hope that the writers won't make such a hollow relationship endgame.

Lim and Melendez – The Good Doctor

Lim and Melendez aren't an incredible couple, by any means. While there's nothing inherently wrong with them, it simply feels as if The Good Doctor could find more fulfilling partners for both of them.

They may have broken up because their relationship was interfering with their work dynamic, but their feelings are very obviously still there.

Regardless, it would be best for their work and personal life if they found a way to move on for good next year.

Garrett and Colleen – Superstore

Colleen and Garrett - Superstore Season 5 Episode 3
(Trae Patton/NBC)

Garrett and Colleen didn't last long, and hopefully, it stays that way.

Dina discovering that Garrett was dating Colleen for real, rather than as a prank, would have been like pouring salt on a wound after the whole bird incident.

In 2020, Dina and Garrett need to admit that they still have feelings for each other and become an official couple, once and for all.

Justin and Jessica – 13 Reasons Why

Despite everything that Justin let happen to her, Jessica and Justin rekindled their romance in 13 Reasons Why Season 3.

While Justin had incredible character development and has done everything in his power to right his wrongs, a romantic relationship between them feels as if it should be completely off the table.

It's a shame, given that the characters have chemistry, but there's no excuse for Justin's actions and no reason for the two to give things another shot.

Sometimes the most beautiful things grow out of the greatest tragedies. These TV characters allowed their tragic backstories to strengthen them. Read on to see who!

Our pasts shape who we are as a person.

The good, the bad, the ugly, and the beautiful — they all make us who we are.

Read on as we discuss TV characters who allowed themselves to grow and become stronger, not only despite but because of, the pain and tragedy of their pasts.

Dean and Sam Winchester – Supernatural

Hands Up - Supernatural Season 14 Episode 16
(Dean Buscher/The CW)

Their tragic lives started with the loss of their mother at the hands of Yellow Eyes. Mary Winchester's death set in motion a chain of events that shaped Dean and Sam's lives. The brothers were dealt blow after blow.

From John dragging them into the hunting business instead of letting them live normal lives, to Sam's fiance Jess being murdered by the same demon who killed their mother, to John dying, and that was all before the second episode of Supernatural Season 2.

All of the loss that was thrown at them by the supernatural world only served to make Sam and Dean the strongest hunters around.

Dex Parois – Stumptown

A Sick Dex? - Stumptown Season 1 Episode 2
(ABC/Tony Rivetti)

We are just starting to get to know Dex, but we already know that Dex has been through a lot in her life.

Her ex-boyfriend Benny's mother drove them apart. After joining the military, Benny followed her in hopes of winning her back, only to get killed in the line of duty.

Benny's death, and her experience in the military in general, Dex suffers from PTSD, but her experiences led to an inner strength that has made her the badass that we already love.

Meredith Grey – Grey's Anatomy

Easy and Breezy - Grey's Anatomy Season 15 Episode 12
(ABC/Mitch Haaseth)

There aren't many people on television that have gone through as much trauma as Meredith Grey.

After Meredith's parents split up, Meredith was left to be raised by Ellis alone. Ellis was an absentee mother who left Meredith feeling inadequate, even in her adult years.

As a child, Meredith found Ellis after what appeared to be a failed suicide attempt, but what Meredith later realized through therapy was a cry for help.

As a young intern her streak of bad luck continued.

Finding out the love of her life was married, having her hand on live ammunition, and surviving a near-drowning experience to name a few.

It isn't until Ellis dies and her spirit gives Meredith the push to be extraordinary, that Meredith becomes the strong woman that we see today.

Meredith continues to face obstacles but she always manages to come out stronger.

Jason Street – Friday Night Lights

Jason had everything going for him. He was good looking, popular, and on the way to being a professional football player. Everything changed in an instant, though.

After an improper tackle, Jason is left paralyzed from the waist down, ending his football career and changing his life forever.

Jason's struggles pushed him to the lowest place he had ever been in, but he was eventually able to grow from it and realize that just because he can't play football anymore, doesn't mean that his life is over.

This realization allowed him to become a strong adult and an incredible father to his child.

Veronica Mars – Veronica Mars

Veronica was just a normal teenage girl before her best friend Lily was murdered.

Lily's murder set her on a much different path than she ever could have imagined.

While grieving the death of Lily, she also becomes the victim of sexual assault.

Veronica became hardened by her losses, but as her best friend Wallace reminds us, she is just a marshmallow.

Veronica is arguably one of the strongest female characters ever on television, but that would have never been possible without her tragic past.

Angel – Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel

Angel was turned into a vampire when he was in his mid-twenties.

For over 100 years he killed countless people and was one of the most notorious vampires in existence.

After being cursed with a soul by a gypsy clan, Angel was forced to live with the guilt of the horrors of his past.

For years, Angel let this guilt hold him back from the world before finally finding his calling in being a force of good.

Ryan Atwood – The OC

Ryan enters the lives of the Cohen family after being put in jail thanks to being there when his brother stole a car.

After getting out of jail, Ryan is abandoned by his mom, leaving him with nowhere to go.

Being raised by an alcoholic mom, with no father in the picture, forced Ryan to be independent.

Ryan showed us, though, that sometimes showing that you're strong doesn't mean doing everything alone, but instead being willing to let people in, which he slowly can do with Cohens.

Dylan Mckay – Beverly Hills, 90210

An abusive father raised Dylan due to his absentee mother.

Dylan fended for himself the majority of the time, which wasn't always a bad thing because things were less than perfect when his father was around.

After spending time in prison, Dylan's father fakes his death and joins the witness protection program — a fact that Dylan doesn't learn until years later.

Despite Dylan's upbringing, Dylan was mature beyond his years.

Caleb Rivers – Pretty Little Liars

Caleb got abandoned by both his mother and his father as a child. Caleb spent his life in the foster system, and when he meets the Liars he is living out of the school after a foster situation goes wrong.

Caleb spent his time hacking as a means to an end and even spied on Hanna for Jenna to get money.

Caleb eventually rose above his past, though, and became one of the best assets the Liars had.

Jo Wilson – Grey's Anatomy

Jo's Freedom - Grey's Anatomy Season 14 Episode 10
(ABC)

Jo spent her youth in foster care and then homeless.

In her early adulthood she ended up married to a man who was so abusive that she had to change her name and flee to get away from him.

Jo's past lead her to be incredibly independent.

The recent revelation that she was the product of a sexual assault threw her into a depression. Her storyline showed that no matter how strong someone is, we all can use help sometimes.

It takes real courage to admit that you need help and Jo showed that courage when she checked in for an inpatient psychiatric stay.

Shawn Hunter – Boy Meets World

Shawn's parents went in and out of his life with no sense of responsibility for him whatsoever.

Shawn was never really alone, though, and was taken in as an unofficial member of the Matthews family.

After Shawn's dad's death, Shawn considers running from his life, but eventually, realizes that between the Matthews and his half brother Jack he has everything he needs to stay strong.

Shawn never believed he would amount to much, but we learned in Girl Meets World that he is a successful photojournalist, proving that we do not have to be the products of our upbringing.

Alex Karev – Grey's Anatomy

Handsome Karev Pic
(ABC/Danny Feld)

Alex was raised by a drug addict father and a mother with significant mental health issues.

Alex was not the greatest person when Grey's Anatomy began.

However, after going through what he has on the show like dealing with Ava having a mental breakdown and helping Izzie through cancer only to later be left by her, Alex grew so much as a person.

Alex is one of the rocks of the show now and holds things together.

Sansa Stark – Game of Thrones

It's Time for War - Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 3
(Helen Sloan/HBO)

When we met Sansa, she was an unlikeable spoiled brat who felt entitled to the world.

After watching her father get killed on the orders of Jothri, her betrothed, she was effectively held captive by his family, eventually getting forced into marrying his uncle Tyrion.

Once she finally escapes the clutches of the Lannisters, she thought her troubles would be over, but they were only beginning.

Forced into yet another marriage, she is raped and tortured.

The Sansa we knew during Game of Thrones Season 1 would have never been able to handle such horrors, but Sansa rose like a phoenix from the ashes and eventually become the Queen of the North.

Jessica Davis – 13 Reasons Why

Jessica's New Job - 13 Reasons Why
(David Moir/Netflix)

Hannah may have been the focus of 13 Reasons Why Season 1, but she wasn't the only one who had been hiding a secret that was leading them to terrible pain.

Bryce had raped Jessica, and Justin had let him do it.

Fueled by the loss of Hannah, Jessica found the strength to fight back against her attacker.

Even though Jessica didn't get the retribution she had hoped for in going after Bryce, her experience changed her and she became a leader and a voice for change.

Kelly Taylor – Beverly Hills, 90210/90210

Kelly's mom Jackie was a drug addict alcoholic who didn't do much parenting.

Kelly may have had her fair share of ups and downs, even facing her problems with addiction.

However, she came out the other side as a strong woman and wonderful role model to Silver, who she ends up taking in even though she is already a single mother.

Zoe Benson – AHS: Coven

Zoe's gift that she is cursed with is the ability to make a man die from a hemorrhage during intercourse. When she loses her virginity, oblivious to her gift, she kills her boyfriend.

Zoe is then ripped out of her home and brought to New Orleans to get trained in the ways of witchcraft.

Because of Zoe's powers, she is unable to be physically intimate with anyone unless she wants them to die at her hands. She finds inner strength in her witchcraft, though, and goes on to train the next generation of witches.

Alison Dilaurentis – Pretty Little Liars

Truth Seeking - PLL: The Perfectionists Season 1 Episode 4
(Freeform/Scott Patrick Green)

Alison may have started as Rosewood's resident mean girl, but she went through her fair share of nightmares.

After being tormented by Mona under the guise of "A", Alison is buried alive by her mother. Scared to let her attempted murderer know she is alive, Alison is forced to stay on the run.

Once she returns she is framed for Mona's "murder" and is even found guilty of the murder and goes to jail.

She is then lied to by Charlotte, making her believe that she is her sister. Charlotte's boyfriend Archer tricks Alison into marrying him, and then he has her locked up in a psychiatric institute, and her money gets stolen by Archer and her aunt Mary.

Alison still, after everything that she was put through, ended up coming out as the most changed and most improved Liar.

Daenerys Targaryen – Game of Thrones

Saying Goodbye (Wide) - Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 4
(Helen Sloan/HBO)

Daenerys started Game of Thrones as an orphan who was being married off to a man much older than her to a secure an army for her power-hungry brother.

After losing her husband, who she grew to love, and bringing to life three dragons, Daenerys finds herself the ruler of her own people.

Daenerys faces many threats and betrayals over the years, but all her hardships hardened her and made her a fearless leader.

Say what you will about Daenerys by the end of Game of Thrones, but she was one bad bitch.

Carter Wilson – Finding Carter

Carter spent the majority of her life thinking she was being raised by a loving mother, Lori, only to find out that she had been abducted as a child by her.

Carter is forced back into her birth family where she feels like a stranger and struggles to bond with them.

Just when she finally starts to feel like part of the family, Lori kidnaps her again and reveals she is her biological mother as she was a surrogate for Carter's parents.

To add to Carter's troubles, she witnesses her boyfriend shoot her best friend accidentally, almost killing him, giving her no choice but to help turn him in to the police.

So many other people would have crumbled under the stress of Carter's dramatic life, but Carter remains a strong independent woman.

Jon Snow – Game of Thrones

A Bloody Aftermath - Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 4
(Helen Sloan/HBO)

Jon was raised as a bastard and spent his whole life being treated as such.

After going to the Nightwatch he felt like he had a sense of purpose, but still, he found himself suffering more pain.

Jon had not one, but two of the woman he loved, die in his arms, one at his own hands.

Jon rose from the dead after being murdered by his men. The betrayal only made him an even greater leader though.

As King of the North, he showed his strength, and even would have probably become the King of Westeros if he hadn't been the one to put an end to Daenerys. Not bad former bastard.

Emily Thorne – Revenge

Emily, also known as Amanda, had the only person she loved ripped away from her when her father went to prison for a terrorist act that he got framed for.

Emily finds herself in and out of foster homes and even spending time in juvie.

As strong as she may have felt as a rebellious teenager, her real strength comes when she finds out the truth about her father and his set on a path to avenge his name.

Maeve – Westworld

Maeve may be an AI, but that doesn't mean that she doesn't have feelings.

Living the story of a mother — one who saw her child murdered — left an imprint on her that she couldn't shake, and aided in her becoming aware of her reality.

Maeve's new found consciouness forces her to live out the horrors of being a host.

Maeve finds power in this though and eventually helps to lead a rebellion.

Callie Adams Foster – The Fosters/Good Trouble

Callie spent her childhood being tossed around various foster homes.

Through it all she is forced to be a mother figure to her brother, as just a teenager herself.

During her time in foster care she is faced with abuse.

As she finally finds a safe place to land with the Adams Fosters, she is allowed to deal with her trauma and becomes an advocate for other foster children.

The Orville may be on hiatus for some time before it makes the jump from FOX to Hulu, but it is rounding out its cast in preparation.

Deadline is reporting that Anne Winters will join the cast of the third season as Charly Burke. As is the norm with this series, no other details have been revealed.

The move to Hulu was announced back in July by Seth MacFarlane, who explained that the show would not be back on the air until the end of 2020.

Explaining the move, MacFarlane said, “The Orville has been a labor of love for me, and there are two companies which have supported that vision in a big way: 20th Century Fox Television… and Fox [network], which has been my broadcast home for over 20 years."

"My friends at the network understood what I was trying to do with this series, and they’ve done a spectacular job of marketing, launching and programming it for these past two seasons."

He continued, "But as the show has evolved and become more ambitious production-wise, I determined that I would not be able to deliver episodes until 2020, which would be challenging for the network."

"So we began to discuss how best to support the third season in a way that worked for the show. It’s exactly this kind of willingness to accommodate a show’s creative needs that’s made me want to stick around for so long.”

Winters most recently appeared on ABC's ill-fated Grant Hotel as Ingrid. She also had a highly praised role on Netflix's 13 Reasons Why as Chloe Rice.

13 Reasons Why has a troublesome representation of its LGBTQ+ characters, especially during 13 Reasons Why Season 3, particularly in the portrayal and downfall of Monty de la Cruz.

If we boil it down, Monty and Bryce Walker are one and the same.

Their characterization is built around the same angry toxic masculinity: jocks who are mad at the world and excuse their hateful and distasteful behavior on their challenging upbringing.

The entirety of the third season dedicates itself to Bryce's redemption for all his past wrongdoings.

The show received a lot of backlash for the complete change in narrator and narrative, and rightfully so.

What once was a show focused on teen suicide and the amalgamation of the reasons behind Hannah Baker's death turned into a sob story for the perpetrator of rape.

Perhaps a commentary on how the justice system favors the white upper class.

Bryce's storyline contrasts with Monty's, a kid from a working-class Latino family who gets imprisoned immediately after Tyler Down's statement to the police about the sexual assault from the previous season.

Monty deserved his sentence, but not his untimely death, which was thrown in haphazardly last minute as the final episode was coming to an end.

Monty's death gave way for Ani to pin Bryce's murder on him, fully knowing he had a solid alibi.

During one of the final scenes, Winston approaches Ani confronting her about her lies to the police, reminding her Monty was actually with him the night of Bryce's murder.

Winston: He was a human being, ok. He was a human being. He didn’t deserve to die like that.

Although Monty's death is attributed to his sexual assault crimes against Tyler, his wrongful conviction of Bryce's murder is ridiculous.

The slow finger pointing at each character, suddenly to reveal the truth and a coverup in the final episode was all too fast and anticlimactic.

The unrealistic "resolution" of the investigation in the third season left numerous holes in the plotline, reminiscent of Pretty Little Liars. Yes, it's fiction, but how can a show portray such an nonchalant false solution.

Monty's informal "coming out" got rushed, and we didn't have time to process it before he was instantly killed off. Dare we say the "bury your gays" trope is at play?

His death was an easy scapegoat that could've been dealt with differently. Had the show at least placed more importance on his death or hadn't quickly brushed it under the rug, it would've done his character more justice.

After Lexa's fateful demise in The 100 led to an upheaval in the LGBTQ+ community revealing a larger issue within media, we're baffled any show had the audacity to do the community dirty yet again.

It's become an unfortunate commonality that LGBTQ+ characters are seen as expendable to storylines. They aren't given full depth to their character before they are killed off.

13 Reasons Why, Monty
(Netflix)

Despite Monty's character not receiving enough emotional scenes to invoke sympathy, his final scene with his father spitting in his face was arguably more powerful than Bryce's entire redemptive arc.

It would've strengthened the show had he been kept alive. But instead, the scattered breadcrumbs of the hidden truth were left for the next season to uncover.

Of course, the next season will be used to recover the lost truth all the characters attempted to bury, at least here's hoping.

Albeit, the show isn't going to end in a mass arrest of high schoolers, so the attempted cliffhanger was pretty underwhelming.

Monty's characterization of being the angry closeted jock loses its credibility early on due to its lack of relevance. His sexuality reveal was purely used as shock value for viewers.

Had it been for more than that, he would've received a more thoughtful characterization. Instead, he received a throwaway storyline that was disposed of for the sake of furthering Alex Standall's storyline.

Whereas Bryce and Hannah's deaths received full seasons and reactions, nobody seemed to bat an eye with Monty's death. We weren't even given a small scene of the effect his death had on his family.

Monty in prison - 13 Reasons Why
(Netflix)

Alongside the poor representation of Monty, is Casey Ford, the character who aids Jessica in her fight against rapists.

She falls into the "man-hating lesbian" trope that again is unoriginal and overused. Her hopes to take down the patriarchy are attributed to a lesbian characteristic when in reality could be used for any woman.

Casey - 13 Reasons Why
(Netflix)

These characters are placed in the background where they would fit easiest. Merely woven into the plotline to portray a stronger sense of diversity.

They could've received more dynamic personas. LGBTQ+ characters are more than just stereotypes and should be used to create a dynamic story.

It's unfortunate such a major show chose to lend itself to tropes.

We'll have to wait until next season to see if 13 Reasons Why can redeem itself the way it redeemed Bryce Walker.
