How can a new teaser for 1923 ramp up excitement for the past when the present-day Yellowstone ranch faces near destruction?

A funny thing has happened in the two years since 1923 first aired: the Dutton fight for their land on Yellowstone has been lost.

Well, almost.

I’m writing this post before the Yellowstone Season 5 (or series) finale, so maybe there is a sliver of happiness to be had. At this point, I seriously doubt it.

(Paramount+/Screenshot)

Sure, there is some hope that a spinoff or continuation of the Dutton saga with Beth and Rip at the wheel will renew the family legacy in some way.

And Kayce’s cockamamie tax scheme to save the land — after already selling off their prized stock, all of their horses, and a family history of wagons and whatnot — could buy them another reprieve.

(Lo Smith/Paramount+)

But the reality is that the Duttons’ century-long fight to save their land loses its luster in prequels when the result is so depressing.

We still don’t know the certainty of John Dutton’s ancestral line, which was one of the fun things about watching 1883 and 1923.

And the love stories have been off the hook.

On 1883, young Elsa Dutton had two swoon-worthy romances during her tragically short life span.

Spencer and Alexandra met under circumstances normally found in romance novels. They traversed the globe, running from human, animal, and natural enemies, trying to tear them apart.

(Trae Patton/Paramount+)

Jack and Elizabeth’s story is a little more grounded but not without its perils. They cling to each other for dear life while their worlds fall apart around them.

Of course, that leads us to Beth and Rip, the de facto fiery romance on Yellowstone, and Kayce and Monica, a more level-headed family-style romantic partnership.

So you’ll have to excuse me when I lose my excitement seeing teasers for 1923 that put the battle for land front and center again. That battle likely can’t be won, at least not as the family imagined it at that time.

Much to Taylor Sheridan’s dismay, it wasn’t the search for or battle for the land that made either the 1883 or 1923 appointment TV — it was the emotional connections promising to keep the fire burning for generations to come.

(Lo Smith/Paramount+)

Here’s the official synopsis for 1923 Season 2:

A cruel winter brings new challenges and unfinished business to Jacob and Cara back at the Dutton ranch.

With harsh conditions and adversaries threatening to end the Dutton legacy, Spencer embarks on an arduous journey home, racing against time to save his family in Montana.

Meanwhile, Alexandra sets off on her own harrowing trans-Atlantic journey to find Spencer and reclaim their love.

So, Spencer and Alexandra, the fiery light that swept over us all while watching 1923 Season 1, will be separated for a good portion of the season, most likely the whole season, with them running into each others arms to close out the series.

If there’s one thing that these short seasons (and short series) rob us of, it’s the joy of experiencing a relationship’s development over time.

Even worse, Sheridan’s shows are soap operas in their truest sense, where star-crossed lovers fight against forces pushing them to their limits and often keeping them out of the arms that give them life.

(Trae Patton/Paramount+)

On Yellowstone, John Dutton, the last man to care as deeply about the land as the family who claimed it, is dead.

No matter how that story ends, the wars waged by previous Dutton generations don’t hold as much weight anymore. The way of life they lived and fought for is at its end.

That really sucks the energy out of the past. Maybe the final eight episodes of 1923 will prove me wrong.

If Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2 has done anything, it’s shown that my optimism is a pipe dream. So, I’ll remain cynical and enjoy the elation of my incorrect assumptions should they come to that.

Here’s the official teaser:

Are you still excited for 1923, or has Yellowstone’s ending tarnished the past as much as the present?

Let me know what you’re thinking in the comments below.

1923 Season 2 premieres on Paramount+ on Sunday, February 23.

Prison Break is returning with a new series on Hulu. With new creatives at the wheel, what's about to go down? We have ideas.

Just when we thought the Prison Break franchise was over, it sounds like we’re getting another series.

Deadline reported around this time last year that Hulu had put a “new incarnation” of the hit drama into development. Today, they reported that it has officially received a pilot order.

Prison Break first aired on FOX in 2005 before being canceled in 2009 after four seasons.

However, FOX aired a limited series revival in 2017, bringing back the show’s key players, including Wentworth Miller, Sarah Wayne Callies, and Dominic Purcell.

The next chapter will be an entirely new concept but will still take place in the universe of the original series.

That’s probably an excellent idea, given how Prison Break Season 5 ended.

If you’re a Prison Break fan, you were likely upset by the end of the show’s original run, which seemingly sealed Michael Scofield’s fate.

The ending didn’t sit well with fans, and for good reason: It was never supposed to be the end.

Another chapter was always planned to bring Michael back to life or, at the very least, reveal he was alive.

By the end of Prison Break Season 5 Episode 9, there was a resolution for all of the key players, something we didn’t get with the 2009 series finale.

As a result, kicking off a new storyline featuring those characters probably wouldn’t work.

There’s also a good chance that Wentworth wouldn’t be interested in returning to that role.

Despite calls from fans for more Prison Break, Miller revealed in 2020 that he was done with the franchise.

I just don’t want to play straight characters. Their stories have been told (and told). So… no more Michael,” he said at the time.

“If you were a fan of the show, hoping for additional seasons… I understand this is disappointing. I’m sorry.”

“Fully support and understand your reasoning. Glad you have made this decision for you health and your truth,” Purcell wrote in the comments at the time.

Callies added, “With gratitude for all the work we did together, and with deep love, I’m voicing my support for that choice.”

Things could have changed in the years since, and there’s always the possibility that Miller could make a cameo.

Taking the franchise in a new direction is interesting because, at one point, a spinoff was in the works at the height of the show’s popularity.

Unfortunately, it never came to pass with the creatives focused on the main series.

There was also an idea for a Prison Break Season 6 that would have brought back the original cast, but from a marketing point of view, a new series with a new cast could drum up some more interest.

Sarah Wayne Callies attends SCAD aTVfest 2020 -

That doesn’t mean we won’t see some familiar faces because we met many people throughout the show’s five-season run.

Mayans M.C. showrunner Elgin James’ attachment to the project is also intriguing.

Mayans M.C. was a fantastic, markedly grittier series than Sons of Anarchy.

A new Prison Break tale would have to be gritty to live up to what came earlier in the franchise, but as far as plot details go, we’re at a loss, and the powers that be are keeping them tightly under wraps.

There was plenty of corruption in the initial series, so there’s a high chance that the world of Prison Break hasn’t changed in the years since.

The natural next step for the franchise would be to set the show at a female prison with a predominantly female ensemble because it would set it apart from the original series.

The final chapter of the original series focused on Sarah (Callies) and Gretchen (Jodi Lyn O’Keefe) in a women’s prison, and there was plenty of drama as Michael tried to save his wife.

The prison setting will always be necessary for the show to succeed because it’s not like a new series can be called “Prison Break” without having a unique spin on the tried and true formula.

The move to streaming will also allow for more freedom in the storytelling department, making an update in this franchise all the more worthwhile.

It’s hard to be excited when story details are being kept under wraps, but having James along for the ride and working with the original creatives should lead to something very good.

Universal is developing a Friday Night Lights reboot for Peacock. But the magic of the original series can never be recaptured.

There are sports dramas, and then there’s Friday Night Lights.

While All American and other series have explored the heightened drama that unfolds on the gridiron and in the locker room, no show in modern history has consistently done so with as much heart as FNL.

ESPN columnist Bill Simmons once hailed it as “the greatest sports-related show ever made.” Many critics would add that the contest is not a particularly close one.

Last month, Variety reported that Universal was developing a reboot of the beloved series, which ran from 2006-2011.

Now, the news has been confirmed, and the spinoff has been picked up by Peacock.

Surely some fans are excited about the prospect of returning to the world of Texas high school football.

But the prevailing mood at the moment is one of utter confusion.

And the question on the minds of many FNL devotees is simply: Why?

Matt Saracen Picture

Network execs often can’t help themselves from messing with perfection by returning to proven properties.

But in this case, the move is particularly baffling for a number of reasons.

For starters, the original Friday Night Lights is simply not that old.

Thirteen years might be an eternity in the entertainment industry, but FNL holds up incredibly well, and it’s still available on Netflix.

Coach Taylor Picture
(NBC Universal, Inc./Virginia Sherwood)

And this is not a situation where the show is of historical interest to young people because it depicts a bygone era of unrecognizable customs and beliefs.

Members of Gen Z might watch Friends or The Office to peer in on a different world, but Friday Night Lights is almost shockingly contemporary in its themes and interests.

Its depiction of small-town life and the challenges of high school are as relevant now as they were during the Bush years.

Speaking of politics, the changing state of the world might have factored into the decision to make the trip back to Dillon, Texas.

Tim and Lyla Photo
(© NBC Universal, Inc./Virginia Sherwood)

But part of the appeal of the original series was its timeless quality.

Friday Night Lights began life as a 1990 non-fiction novel by H.G. Bissinger.

It was then adapted into a short-lived 1993 television series called Against the Grain (starring a young Ben Affleck!)

Then it became a 2004 feature film directed by Peter Berg, who happens to be a cousin of Bissinger’s.

And then it lived on into the Obama years as a series that enjoyed the kind of cross-demographic appeal that we rarely witness nowadays.

In each of these iterations, the names of the characters changed, but the town, the team, and the coaching staff remained focused on winning as a means of preserving the pride of their community.

Yes, the original FNL dealt with timely issues like racism, abortion, and substance abuse, but in many respects, it was a defiantly old-school show.

Would a new series be able to maintain the same level of populist appeal? Can any show pull off that magic trick in these hyper-divided times?

Alamo Freeze is a fast-food TV show restaurant and notorious hangout spot in Friday Night Lights.
(NBC/Netflix Screenshot)

No show should be expected to strive for complete political impartiality, and the original FNL certainly didn’t.

But in the 2020s, the show would likely prompt a thousand irritating thinkpieces along the lines of the current speculation about Yellowstone’s political alignment. And that’s the last thing we need.

Further dampening enthusiasm for today’s news is the rumor that the new version of FNL would focus on an entirely new set of characters.

That means, of course, that Kyle Chandler, Connie Britton, and the rest of the incredibly stacked cast would not be returning.

Connie Britton attends the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards at Peacock Theater on September 15, 2024 in Los Angeles, California.

Britton seemed to confirm that rumor in recent remarks on the subject.

“I heard that they’re making another Friday Night Lights, which I find bizarre,” she told Variety in September.

Needless to say, it sounds like she’s not involved with the project.

So yeah, the remake is definitely happening, and we’re as anxious as a backup QB called in after the star signal-caller got knocked out of the game.

It’s a strange feeling to see such a fantastic show back in the headlines and feel anything less than giddy enthusiasm. But when it comes to this reboot we’re having a hard time summoning our “clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose” mentality.

The Rookie is getting another spinoff, and it's... more of the same. We're underwhelmed, and here's why!

The post Copy & Paste: Franchise Fatigue & Why The Rookie’s New Spinoff Already Lost Us appeared first on TV Fanatic.

]]>
Did we NEED another spinoff of The Rookie?

No, the answer, my dear Rookie Fanatics, is a resounding no!

News sources have been talking today about a second spinoff in the works for ABC’s popular cop drama. Under any other circumstances, it might appeal to fans.

Explosive Targets - The Rookie
(Disney/Raymond Liu (ABC))

However, for those of us still reeling from the mixed bag that was The Rookie: Feds, we’re skeptical about ABC’s attempt to expand a popular franchise.

For starters, franchise fatigue is most certainly real.

Television has built a new era around franchises, spinoffs, revivals, reboots, and adaptations.

It’s not to say that many of them aren’t good or even successful. NCIS: Origins has been one of the most delightful expansions of the NCIS franchise in quite some time.

Austin Stowell as Leroy Jethro Gibbs and Kyle Schmid as Mike Franks
(Erik Voake/CBS)

Dick Wolf pretty much cornered the market on franchises with three different ones across two different networks with Law & Order, One Chicago, and FBI, and, hell, he’ll probably do the same with the upcoming On Call on Prime.

Cop procedurals, in particular, are always wildly and massively successful and are typically a safe bet.

ABC has already realized that franchises or showrunner supremacy serve them well.

The Grey’s Anatomy universe has been the network’s bread and butter, and we’re still lamenting the loss of the Shondaland series primetime domination from many years ago.

Ellen Pompeo as Meredith Grey
(Disney/Ser Baffo)

But now, they’ve focused on making Ryan Murphy productions a network staple, especially after adapting 9-1-1.

The 9-1-1 franchise will expand as well with new series (Sorry, 9-1-1: Lone Star, you had to die so that whatever new locale could thrive in its new home).

And now, ABC is trying their hand at yet another The Rookie spinoff, despite how easily they threw in the towel with Niecy Nash Betts’ The Rookie: Feds.

Some of us are still a bit bitter about things like Suits: LA making its debut soon to capitalize on the renewed success of Suits and expand that franchise all these years later.

And that’s to the chagrin of all four of us Pearson Fanatics, who never got to see the first spinoff get the success it deserved.

Gang War in a Hospital Shocks - tall - The Rookie Season 6 Episode 8
(Disney/Raymond Liu (ABC))

Everywhere you look, and on every network, they’ve opted to produce repeats or extensions of what they feel works instead of taking bolder risks and creating original, fresh content.

It sucks, even as someone who enjoys a spinoff or two or entire franchises; it’s disappointing that everyone is trying to reinvent the wheel instead of taking a big swing at manufacturing something new entirely.

And The Rookie, my dear TV Fanatics, epitomizes “more of the same.” They’re not even attempting to do anything different with this latest spinoff.

Instead, after the unsuccessful spinoff that saw a middle-aged, queer woman of color getting a fresh start as an FBI agent, no matter how implausible it was, the new spinoff intends to stick to the original formatting.

Still Confused - The Rookie Season 6 Episode 7
(Disney/Raymond Liu (ABC))

What is the new spinoff’s premise, you ask?

The spinoff follows a male cop stepping into a new phase of life in his second act.

So, the series will once again be about a middle-aged man who is having a midlife crisis and will become a cop.

Are you blinking as much as I am right now? Isn’t that the exact same format as the original Nathan Fillion-led show?

Oh, wait, you guys. What distinguishes this from the original series is that it will take place somewhere in the state of Washington!

Nolan Takes Point - Tall - The Rookie Season 6 Episode 5
(Disney/Raymond Liu (ABC))

And by Washington, I’ll bet your bottom dollar it’s somewhere in Seattle because, let’s be real, everyone acts like Seattle is the only city in Washington!

Hey, maybe, if we’re lucky, they can somehow finagle a crossover with Grey’s Anatomy or something. Doubtful, but a girl can dream.

So, not only has The Rookie opted to repeat the original series verbatim, but they’re also essentially borrowing from the 9-1-1 franchise.

We’ll just replicate the same show over and over again and place it in a new location!

Training Celina - The Rookie Season 6 Episode 3
(Disney/Raymond Liu (ABC))

It feels like they’re resubmitting an old assignment with a new date and title and keeping their fingers crossed for the best.

The thing is, that works for 9-1-1 as a first responder show that deals more exclusively with firefighters and paramedics responding to a wide array of calls that can be culturally specific to whatever locale they’re in (earthquakes and wildfires in Los Angeles or cowboy-themed foolery in Texas).

It doesn’t have the same feel when you’re exclusively dealing with law enforcement.

While responses were mixed regarding the award-winning Betts leading The Rookie: Feds spinoff, it was genuinely refreshing to explore a woman entering a new stage of her life via a career change.

Sgt Grey - The Rookie Season 5 Episode 22
(Raymond Liu/ABC)

There was nothing wrong with that concept on its own, and it’s a storyline worth exploring because we’ve exhausted storylines about men and their midlife crises for 50 years!

Would it have killed anyone to have at least this latest spinoff be female-led just for some razzle-dazzle?

And that’s where the news of this spinoff elicits more boredom and frustration than excitement.

The Rookie has been on the air for seven years and is still one of the network’s top series. It is massively successful and possibly still has a lot of life left in it.

Harper, Nolan, & the Feds - The Rookie Season 6 Episode 10
(ABC (Youtube Screenshot))

It’s worrisome that Hawley and ABC could stretch themselves thin by devoting their attention to a newer, flashier version of the exact same series rather than focusing on the one they already have.

And if they were going to do that, wouldn’t it be worth it if they actually, you know, switched things up a bit or took a more original approach to this new series?

We can at least feel it’s worth it or understand the purpose.

Given the franchise’s ongoing theme, the irony of potentially replacing The Rookie with a more current, younger version of the exact same series isn’t lost.

I get not knocking what already works, but this is ridiculous and a bit underwhelming.

Nolan Means Business - The Rookie Season 6 Episode 1
(Disney/Raymond Liu (ABC))

But maybe we’re being premature. As new information trickles in about this spinoff, with interesting casting and a more detailed synopsis, we could change our minds about this.

For now, The Rookie, essentially copying and pasting itself to expand its universe, is a prime example of everything wrong, archaic, annoying, and underwhelming about the franchise era and why viewers are over it.

Over to you, The Rookie Fanatics.

Taylor Sheridan’s grip on the small screen went to dizzying heights with 1923, the third chapter in the Yellowstone saga.

Fans immediately connected with the setting, the cast, and the timely storylines that took us back in time to tell another origin story about the Duttons.

Today is the day that we finally have an idea about 1923 Season 2. Paramount+ released new photos, two teasers, and a premiere date.

1923: Has It Been Renewed for Season 2?

Unlike 1883, which was designed as one season to tell a complete story, 1923 is getting a second season.

Michelle Randolph plays Elizabeth and Darren Mann plays Jack in 1923 Season 2 Episode 4. (Trae Patton/Paramount+)

As the writing process was underway, Taylor Sheridan realized he needed more time to wrap up the storylines, which means we’re getting a second season.

It will probably be the final season because the superproducer has been vocal about not wanting to keep the shows on the air beyond their initial storylines.

It’s always good when shows have a clear beginning, middle, and ending because it makes them more satisfying to watch.

How Many Episodes Have Been Ordered for 1923 Season 2?

Brandon Sklenar as Spencer in 1923 Season 2 Episode 4. (Lo Smith/Paramount+)

1923 Season 1 spanned eight episodes, and we’re getting the same again with 1923 Season 2.

Eight-episode seasons mean there’s little time for filler and more time for action, so we can’t wait to see what’s on the horizon for Cara, Jacob, and the rest of the Duttons.

It’s unbelievable how many stories have been brought to the forefront about the Duttons.

The family has a long and storied past; we’re just happy it will continue to be charted.

Julia Schlaepfer as Alexandra in 1923 Season 2 Episode 4. (Lo Smith/Paramount+)

1923 Season 2 Cast: Who’s In?

After the events of 1923 Season 1, it’s easy to tell who will be returning.

Hint: Their characters didn’t die. Take a look at who should be on the roster for 1923 Season 2.

Harrison Ford as Jacob Dutton

Helen Mirren as Cara Dutton

Darren Mann as Jack Dutton

Brian Geraghty as Zane in 1923 Season 2 Episode 7. (Trae Patton/Paramount+)

Michelle Randolph as Elizabeth “Liz” Strafford

Brandon Sklenar as Spencer Dutton

Julia Schlaepfer as Alexandra

Brian Geraghty as Zane Davis

Aminah Nieves as Teonna Rainwater

Jerome Flynn as Banner Creighton and Timothy Dalton as Donald Whitfield in 1923 Season 2 Episode 2. (Trae Patton/Paramount+)

Jerome Flynn as Banner Creighton

Timothy Dalton as Donald Whitfield

1923 Season 2 Cast Additions

Jennifer Carpenter (Dexter) joins 1923 as Mamie Fossett, “a highly capable U.S. Deputy Marshall who serves warrants and makes arrests with confidence ahead of her time.”

Janet Montgomery (New Amsterdam) joins 1923 as Hillary, “a thoughtful woman who does not want to see injustice go unpunished.”

Michelle Randolph as Elizabeth in 1923 Season 2 Episode 7. (Trae Patton/Paramount+)

1923 Season 2: What Will It Be About?

Given that 1923 Season 1 concluded without resolution, plenty of questions are still up in the air, meaning we’ll need to tune into 1923 Season 2 for some answers.

Obviously, Cara and Jacob will take center stage, but the rest of their family and people in their orbit still have a lot of stories to tell.

Helen Mirren as Cara Dutton and Harrison Ford as Jacob Dutton in 1923 Season 2 Episode 1. (Trae Patton/Paramount+)

The bad news? It’s hard to judge what comes next because Sheridan likes to subvert expectations, so there’s a good chance the final eight episodes will go in a completely different direction to what we expect.

That’s why we love these shows so much.

When Will 1923 Season 2 Premiere?

We finally have an answer for that!

The second season will premiere on Sunday, February 23 exclusively on Paramount+

Harrison Ford as Jacob Dutton, Darren Mann as Jack Dutton and Caleb Martin as Dennis in 1923 Season 2 Episode 1. (Trae Patton/Paramount+)

Is There a Trailer for 1923 Season 2?

We’ve got two, count them TWO teasers for the second season.

That’s the good news.

The bad news is that even if you piece them together, they don’t amount to much.

Did we really expect details about a TS show? Uh, no.

Where Can I Watch 1923?

1923 Season 1 aired exclusively on Paramount+.

While the series is a streaming original, Paramount has decided to air the complete first season on Paramount, and the premiere date for 1923 Season 1 Episode 1 is December 8 at 9/8c.

If you want to catch up with this series and its incredibly romantic love stories, that’s the best place to start.

1923 Season 1 was also released on Blu-Ray and DVD in August 2023, so you can own it, as well.

Harrison Ford as Jacob Dutton and Helen Mirren as Cara Dutton in 1923 Season 2 Episode 7. (Lo Smith/Paramount+)

Will the Dutton Family Dynasty Lead to More Yellowstone Spinoffs Set in the Past?

Paramount+ ordered 1944 and The Madison, which is already in production.

We’re also not yet sure if the next two episodes of Yellowstone Season 5 will be their last or if they’re going to continue the present-day Dutton saga beyond its latest “chapter,” as the execs describe it.

Yellowstone’s final episode is also called a season finale, which leads us to believe the present-day Duttons will continue with Beth at the helm.

That’s all we got, 1923 Fanatics. We will update this page as TV news drops, so check regularly.

Ross Crain as Marshall Thomas, Sebastian Roche as Father Renaud, and James McShane as Marshall Kent in 1923 Season 2 Episode 1. (Lo Smith/Paramount+)

Prime Video released the explosive trailer for its upcoming series from the Wolf Universe, On Call. Take a look!

Looking at the whole Wolf Universe of TV, one aspect of the justice system is untouched — cops on the beat, doing the hardest work to bring down the bad guys.

They’re the officers who take chances with unknown suspects, chasing them down and asking tough questions.

With Prime Video’s On Call, those beat cops will get their just reward.

(Elizabeth Morris/Amazon MGM Studios)

Today, Prime Video released the official trailer and key art for On Call, a gripping new half-hour drama series from Wolf Entertainment and Universal Television.

(Courtesy of Prime Video)

Co-created by Tim Walsh and Elliot Wolf, On Call is Wolf Entertainment’s first scripted streaming series and will premiere with all eight episodes on January 9, 2025, exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.

On Call is an adrenalized and visceral police drama that follows a rookie and veteran officer duo as they go on patrol in Long Beach, California.

The innovative series incorporates a mixture of bodycam, dash camera, and cellphone footage to create a cinema verité effect.

It explores the morality of protecting and serving a community.

The series stars Troian Bellisario (Pretty Little Liars) as Officer Traci Harmon, a seasoned twelve-year veteran and training officer with a strong moral compass that has defined her approach to policing, even if that puts her at odds with new law enforcement policies.

(Elizabeth Morris/Prime Video)

Brandon Larracuente (The Good Doctor) stars as Alex Diaz, an ambitious rookie who struggles to maintain his optimistic outlook as he realizes the challenges he’ll face in today’s climate.

We’ve seen all eight episodes, and its storytelling is fresh and propulsive.

You’ll be reminded of many other shows, including On Patrol: Live, The Rookie, and Southland, but there is little room for fluff here, and On Call emerges as something entirely unexpected.

Take a look at the official trailer now:

The cast also includes the following heavy hitters:

The additional cast includes Eriq La Salle (ER, Logan) as Sergeant Lasman, who also serves as an executive producer on the series and directed multiple episodes.

Lori Loughlin (Fuller House) as Lieutenant Bishop.

Rich Ting as Sergeant Koyama (Tulsa King).

(Elizabeth ‘Liz’ Morris)

Dick Wolf (Law & Order, Chicago, FBI-branded series), Tim Walsh (Chicago P.D., Hightown, Night Stalker), Elliot Wolf (Dark Woods, Hunted), Eriq LaSalle (former EP/Director Chicago P.D.), and Peter Jankowski are executive producers.

The series is produced by Universal Television, a division of Universal Studios Group and Amazon MGM Studios, in association with Wolf Entertainment.

What do you think? Take it from me; set aside the day to soak this one in. It’s worth it!

More sad news for long-time Days of Our Lives fans.

Just as we’re reeling from the on-screen death of Doug Williams a year after Bill Hayes’ passing and the more recent off-screen death of Drake Hogestyn, Deadline reports that Wayne Northrop has passed away.

Northrop played an additional role on Days of Our Lives and appeared on Dynasty, but he will forever be known to DAYS fans as the actor who originated the role of Roman Brady.

(NBC/Screenshot [enhanced])

Wayne Northrop Was Roman Twice On Days Of Our Lives

Wayne Northrop’s Roman Brady famously fell off a cliff in a fight with Stefano Dimera in 1984. Soon, Roman was recast with Drake Hogestyn, leading to one of the most famous stories and the one that makes me saddest about both Northrop and Hogestyn passing away within months of each other.

Several years after Hogestyn was hired, it was revealed that he wasn’t Roman — the real Roman had survived the fall from the cliff and taken several years to find his way back home.

This story would not have worked if Northrop had not been willing to come back. Sure, John could have learned he wasn’t really Roman, but it would have been less powerful without Roman in Salem.

I suppose Josh Taylor could have been hired earlier, but having ANOTHER new actor take over the role from the one who thought he was Roman for years would have been silly, especially since Taylor was wrapping up his role as Chris Kositchek on Days of Our Lives at the time.

As it is, there are some fans who consider Wayne Northrop to be the “real” Roman Brady, even though Josh Taylor has played the role since 1997.

In any case, Roman and Marlena fans were devastated by this plot twist because it permanently ended the original super couple, but considering that Hogestyn’s version of Roman/John had played Marlena’s love interest for years and the two had significant chemistry, it was for the best.

(NBC/Screenshot [enhanced])

Wayne Northrop Also Played Another Role On Days Of Our Lives

The actor switcheroo was not over, as 20 years later, Wayne Northrop returned to Days of Our Lives once more to play the villainous Alex North.

I don’t really remember Alex North very well, but from what I’ve heard, he’s considered one of the worst villains.

He appeared in Salem as an amnesia expert who claimed to be trying to help Marlena recover her memory, but in actuality he was an old flame who was supposedly still married to her and wanted to steal her from John.

That sounds like an evil version of Roman, especially because Northrop again ended his run by his character falling to his death off a cliff, this time after a fight with John.

Was this meta-commentary or what?

1982 screenshot of Roman (then played by Wayne Northrop) and Marlena at a party on Days of Our Lives
(NBC / Screenshot)

Wayne Northrop Also Had A Larger Body Of Work

Although Northrop was best known for Days of Our Lives, he also appeared in several other shows.

He was mostly known as a soap star, having appeared on Dynasty and Port Charles, but he also appeared in three episodes of the legal drama LA Law.

Sadly, Alex North was Northrop’s last role, and he disappeared from the TV landscape after that, which might be one reason that he is best known today as the first Roman Brady.

I wish I knew why he had stopped acting. He seemed like he had it made in the 1980s, as he was everywhere then, only to disappear permanently after his last stint on Days of Our Lives.

Wayne Northrop’s Death From Early Onset Alzheimers Is Painful For Days Fans

Northrop died of complications from early-onset Alzheimers at the age of 77, after a six-year battle with the disease, and 18 years after his last performance on Days of Our Lives.

Still, despite how long it has been, his death is heartbreaking for Days of Our Lives fans.

The soap has lost several of its veteran actors in the last few years, which is an occupational hazard of being on for 60 years.

(ABC/Screenshop [enhanced])

Because fans watch these actors day in and day out, it often feels like losing a parent, grandparent, or best friend when one dies.

Even though Wayne Northrop hadn’t been on Days of Our Lives for a long time, it’s still a lot to take so soon after Drake Hogestyn’s passing.

Do you remember Wayne Northrop on Days of Our Lives? What’s your favorite memory of him?

What do you get when you combine Guy Ritchie, Tom Hardy, Pierce Brosnan, and Helen Mirren?

The answer: an upcoming Paramount+ with Showtime series that will keep us breathlessly anticipating each episode.

The untitled Guy Ritchie project, currently titled New Guy Ritchie Project in the context of the below press release, is a global organized crime series centering around two warring families and the loyal fixer charged with protecting them at any cost.

(Courtesy of Paramount+)

With Ritchie at the helm and Hardy, Brosnan, and Mirren leading the charge, how can this possibly go wrong?

Here’s what we know so far.

Production is currently underway in London on Ritchie’s new global crime series with Tom Hardy (Venom: The Last Dance) set to star alongside Pierce Brosnan (Die Another Day) and Helen Mirren (1923) as series regulars.

New Guy Ritchie Project is produced in association with Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios.

The series will debut globally in 2025 on Paramount+ and the Paramount+ with Showtime Plan in the U.S.

Hardy will play “Harry Da Souza,” a professional conciliator on behalf of the Harrigan family, while Brosnan will play “Conrad Harrigan,” the head of a very successful Irish crime family based out of London for whom Harry works.

Mirren will play “Maeve Harrigan,” Conrad’s wife and the Harrigan family matriarch.

“Tom Hardy, Pierce Brosnan, and Helen Mirren are masters at their craft, and we are honored to have them lead the cast for Guy Richie’s new global, original series,” said Chris McCarthy, Paramount Global Co-CEO and President/CEO of SHOWTIME/MTV Entertainment Studios.

“Guy, Jez Butterworth, and Ronan Bennett’s creative prowess, coupled with these gifted actors, is the perfect recipe for what we believe will be the next brand-defining series for Showtime on Paramount+”

“The firepower on and off the screen in this new Guy Ritchie crime series will deliver exactly what audiences expect from Paramount + with Showtime: high-caliber acting, high-impact storylines, and high-level production from some of the best in the business,” said Jeff Grossman, Executive Vice President of programming for Paramount+.

For those of us who caught Kin when it aired in the US and have been desperately awaiting word on seasons two and beyond making their way here, this is fantastic news.

While we don’t know if this will be a present-day endeavor or something from Ireland’s vast history of warring crime families (sorry, Ireland, but we love you!), we have high hopes for the project.

One of my all-time favorite series was Love/Hate out of Ireland. There are so many good storylines to be mined here, and Ritchie is the perfect person to dig into them.

Following In His Father's Footsteps - Taboo

The series is executive produced by Keith Cox, Nina L. Diaz, David C. Glasser, Guy Ritchie, Jez Butterworth, Ronan Bennett, Kris Thykier, Ivan Atkinson, Tom Hardy, Dean Baker, Ron Burkle, David Hutkin, and Bob Yari.

And for those of you who remain confused about the branding, we’re still confused, too.

We’re pretty sure this will be on Showtime cable as well as Paramount+ with Showtime. In other words, if you have Paramount+ without the Showtime addition, you’ll have to watch on cable. If that changes, we’ll let you know!

So, will this be another hit for Paramount+ with Showtime? Shoot us a comment below with your thoughts!

We may soon see a darker side of John Krasinski. The Jack Ryan star is set to star in a serial killer drama opposite Matthew Rhys.

John Krasinski has been a small-screen staple for multiple decades now.

But we’re used to watching him portray unassuming good guys like Jim Halpert or heroic badasses like Jack Ryan.

Now, it seems that we might be on the verge of seeing 2024’s Sexiest Man Alive in a very different light.

According to a new report from The Hollywood Reporter, Krasinski has signed on to join The Americans and Perry Mason star Matthew Rhys in a new serial killer drama for Prime Video.

Both actors will also serve as executive producers on Silent River, which does not yet have a release date.

The details of their roles are unclear at the moment, but we know that the Krasinski and Rhys “will play two men whose lives are more connected than they realize.”

“We are thrilled to continue our work with John Krasinski, Allyson Seeger, and Sunday Night on this gripping series, which delves into the mysteries and secrets of small-town America,“ Vernon Sanders, head of television at Amazon MGM said in a press release.

“With John and Matthew Rhys attached to star in this wonderful story from Aaron Rabin, our global customers will be on the edge of their seats throughout this thought-provoking, psychological thriller.”

Both stars have been on a role lately, with Rhys recently earning acclaim for his performance as George Carlin in Saturday Night.

And in addition to receiving People magazine’s sexiest honor, Krasinski has been absolutely crushing it behind the camera lately.

He recently directed the children’s flick IF, and the Quiet Place franchise that he conceived in 2018 shows no signs of slowing down.

In the past, Krasinski has been accused of playing it a bit safe with his acting choices.

So hopefully he’ll indulge his darker side with this one and drop the nice-guy persona for a bit.

Although we wouldn’t mind if he did one quick glance at the camera, a la Jim Halpert — just for old times’ sake.

Over to you, TV fanatics! Has this project piqued your interest?
