Much like salt and pepper, yin and yang, peanut butter and jelly, we’ll soon associate Bode with Casey — the bromance of a blonde and a brunette.

Fire Country Season 3 Episode 5 spoilers discuss all the nitty-gritty of the episode we’ve been waiting for all fall.

Jared Padalecki is finally making his introductory appearance on Fire Country, and his new role is worlds away from his previous characters.

Camden Casey joins Cal Fire Department
( Eric Milner/CBS)

For months, we’ve talked about Jared Padalecki as SoCal surfer boy firefighter Camden Casey. A bad boy with a good streak that is going to be an acquired taste for the folks of Edgewater and the viewers.

Camden will find a kindred spirit in Bode, although we fully expect to see some sparks fly as the two similar stubborn firefighters clash.

Bode is a hothead with an independent streak, but he’s been limited in what he can do, first from being in prison and now from fire training.

Jake has been working hard to tame Bode’s lone-wolf instincts. Firefighting is very by-the-book, and Bode is famous for doing things his own way.

From the entitled way his grandfather, Pop Leone, acted during Bode’s fire training test in Fire Country Season 3 Episode 3, Bode seems to get it honest. Sharon and Vince feel the same way as Jake and want to keep Bode’s instincts caged.

But Camden will see the raw potential within Bode. Instead of trying to tweak him to fit the CFD mold, Casey will permit Bode to be the heroic, risk-taking rebel he’s meant to become.

Since Bode graduated from Phase 2 fire training in Fire Country Season 3 Episode 4, he is no longer limited to the tight reins that Jake demanded.

( Eric Milner/CBS)

He’s the next instructor’s problem. Enter Captain Camden Casey.

He will be responsible for Bode’s next transformation as Bode tries to carve out his place within the CFD, where his family holds such a legacy.

We know Camden won’t mind getting his hands dirty and walking the walk he expects of other firefighters.

But we predict some tension between the loose-cannon maverick newcomer versus Jake’s more rigid rule-abiding firefighting methods. And between Bode and Casey.

Bode and Casey have a confrontation
( Eric Milner/CBS)

Jake has struggled with separating his personal life from his professional one, as we saw with his abrupt interactions with Bode in Fire Country Season 3 Episode 4.

He’s been going through the wringer as a parent.

And it’s not likely to get any better now that he’s losing his adoptive daughter to her biological dad and his children in another state.

At least Smokie’s is back open after the helicopter crash that interrupted Gabriela and Diego’s wedding in Fire Country Season 3 Episode 1.

So Jake can drink away his woes before returning to his childless home.

( Eric Milner/CBS)

Or maybe Bode and Camden can pull Jake out of his funk and help him return to living his life post-Cara. Jake’s future is wide open for Fire Country Season 3.

Speaking of unclear futures, was now the right time for Sharon and Vince to become entrepreneur bar owners?

Sure, they no longer have to stress about Bode being in prison. He’s out and doing well, so they can finally take a step back from hover parenting.

But just as Vince decided to tear up his early retirement papers, despite his heart problems, the Leones hit another speed bump.

Throughout the heat wave crisis, Sharon attributed her health issues to dehydration. However, the show ended with the cliffhanger that the symptoms could indicate organ rejection.

So, we have a couple with significant health issues who not only fight fires but are also now planning to run a bar.

And do some traveling?

In the previous episode, Jake complained to Bode about Leone’s RV occupying the firehouse space. An RV that Bode and Gabriela put to good use as a hookup spot after the heat wave turned the temperature to irresistible.

Now that the bar is open and operational, will we see Vince and Sharon taking the RV out for some quality traveling time?

Or could the vehicle play a role in Padalecki’s three-episode appearance and potential series spinoff?

Camden Casey makes a case to Bode
( Eric Milner/CBS)

Since Casey is from southern California, it’s possible he and Bode could take a road trip down south in a future episode as they continue to bond over a shared tendency to go rogue.

It’s not like Bode has anything holding him in Edgewater since he and Gabriela are off. Or are they on again?

I’m not sure. And we’re not sure the writers know either.

Maybe if we scream it loud enough, the show will move past Bode and Gabriela as a couple and let Bode explore other options. Like fellow former prison inmate turned firefighter Audrey James.

We’re also hopeful to see more of Eve’s backstory as the season propels her towards a family reunion. Could it be as soon as now?

Eve gets confronted
(Eric Milner/CBS)

The promo photos for “Edgewater’s About to Get Cozy” hint at a possible meeting between Eve and someone she knows personally.

The plaid shirt could be a reference to her family’s ranch.

Sharon put the seed of forgiveness in Eve’s head as she mentioned reuniting with her sister, Mickey Fox. It would be great to see more of the sheriff’s deputy ahead of her spinoff Sheriff Country in 2025.

Wouldn’t an emergency plane landing count as an incident requiring police presence? Then again, the helicopter crash didn’t garner law enforcement involvement either.

Bode holds a baby as he exits the plane
(Eric Milner/CBS)

What is with this show and its vengeance against aircraft for the third season? And what’s next? A drone? Hot air balloon?

So we shouldn’t hold out hope that Fox (Bacarrin) will make a guest appearance this early in the season, if at all.

But it’d be cool if she did!

Until then, we’ll have to enjoy the other new faces in Fire Country Season 3, like Casey, James, and the occasional visit of Pop Leone, who might be around a lot more now that his son owns a bar.

I shudder to think of the emotional turmoil Vince will undergo if he has to endure extended exposure to the toxicity of Walter Leone.

At least he has his music for therapy.

Vince plays guitar
(Eric Milner/CBS)

One benefit of being a bar owner is deciding to put the stage back in so you can play music whenever you want.

We have a lot to look forward to when Fire Country Season 3 Episode 5 airs on Friday. Be sure you’re tuning in live or streaming on Paramount+ the next day, and join our email list to get notified about our Fire Country reviews.

What are your feelings about Jared Padalecki joining Fire Country? Are you looking forward to seeing more of Eve’s personal life? And how are you enjoying the show now that Bode is a free man on his way to becoming a member of the CFD?

Check out this promo trailer to see the chemistry between Jake, Bode, and Camden, and then tell us what you think in the comments!

This episode was a scorcher in all the right ways, and we’re totally here for it. Heat advisory warning!

Fire Country Season 3 Episode 4 review provides an after-action fire report covering all the OMGs and holy craps of the episode, with some rambling commentaries from the friends in my head.

You may not agree with our opinions, and that’s okay! Feel free to share your views in the comments. I love hearing other people’s perspectives.

Vince chats with a colleague
(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)

Let’s start this review by stating the obvious. This episode’s emergency case correlated closely with the personal conflicts of the various firefighters.

First, we had Vince’s out-of-character quoting of his father after the big blowup on Fire Country Season 3 Episode 3. He’s made a big deal of not parenting like his dad until now.

His father-drama bled into his professionalism, skewing his interactions with the struggling apartment building maintenance man who recently lost his father. It was comforting to see him less callous once he learned about the death.

The early retirement letter also seemed to shake him.

I’ve been waiting for the show to pick up the abandoned storyline of his heart condition. Gabriela has stopped hovering, Bode seems unconcerned, and Sharon isn’t acting cautious.

Vince seems to be back in command and attending calls. Everyone has their rightful place within the CFD hierarchy — for now.

Vince exits a vehicle
(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)

Now that we’re back to a full-format season, Fire Country has more room to expand on character conflicts for everyone.

That includes bringing back old storylines, such as Sharon’s health issues, that we didn’t see much of in the show’s short second season.

We saw her struggle with kidney failure throughout the first season, with the story arc of who was going to donate a kidney to her.

Jake was a match, but he backed out. Bode wanted to donate, but he was in prison. Sharon’s kidney came from her sniveling snake of a brother-in-law, Luke, his one act of good in a sea of disgrace.

For the entire second season, Sharon was in full firefighter mode, acting fit as a fiddle and with a precarious disregard for her second chance at life.

Four episodes into Fire Country Season 3, and it looks like we’re picking back up with the abandoned storyline. While Sharon thought she had heat cramps due to extreme heat and power failures, it could be a potential sign of kidney transplant rejection.

Vince looks worried
(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)

The story arc is a great way to remind us that life doesn’t care about your plans. You have to live every day like it’s your last.

So, Vince decided not to take early retirement because he wanted to be around to teach Bode things. But will Sharon have to give up her career for a less risky venture, like running their new bar?

Their AirStream was parked inside the firehouse, much to Jake’s dislike. However, it did come in handy as a hookup spot for Bode and Gabriela.

Speaking of new adventures, if you read our Fire Country Season 3 Episode 4 Spoilers, you’ll know we predicted a resolution for Jake’s baby-daddy drama. While my full wish didn’t come true of seeing Genevieve turn to Uncle Bode for help, the show fulfilled it in a roundabout way.

Gene presented Jake with an organized and insightful presentation to pitch the idea of her transferring to homeschool. Out of state. Alone. At Rick’s home so she can hang with her “sibs.”

Ah, the language of the younger generation.

Jake tutors Bode on firefighting
(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)

Jake instantly said no. Then he spent the whole day in jerk mode, taking his anger out on Bode. Who thinks Jake was taking his power as Bode’s training officer a bit too far?

Bode shows serious character growth and learning to put others ahead of himself.

He advocated for Gene’s plan and agreed it was best for her. She needed a fresh start and deserved to know her siblings and dad. The idea of a movie marathon with Uncle Bode and Daddy Jake to tell her the good news had me all in my feels.

Chime in here, Fire Country Fanatics. Do you agree with Jake’s decision to let her leave? Or should he exert his parental judgment and deny her request until they both have more time to get to know Rick and his family?

It was great to see that Bode and Jake could put aside their differences at work and return to their normal friendship after everything was over.

Jake was pretty harsh the whole episode with Bode. He called him out for his solo acts of heroism that often put others at risk. Not that we blame him there. He claims not to hold any ill will after Bode’s careless theft in Fire Country Season 3 Episode 2.

Vince peeks through a window
(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)

But that’s a lot of distrust and anger for someone not holding a grudge.

However, he’s right about Bode’s reckless stunts, even if they do work out eventually. His self-sacrificing heroism in Fire Country Season 2 Episode 9 got Bode out of prison on an early compassionate release.

But Jake said no Cowboy Bode, and that’s what we saw — someone who listened to his superior and followed orders — mostly without complaint.

He probably wouldn’t have seen any action during his ride along to complete Phase 2 of his fire training if Vince hadn’t stepped in and convinced Jake to let Bode help with the elevator rescue.

Everyone played mediator in this episode.

Vince got Jake to let Bode propel him down the elevator shaft, and he used Bode’s idea for the diabetes medication that Vince had to get to Gabriela inside the elevator.

Gabriela and Manny chat
(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)

Bode did a good job of showing Jake that he could be a team player and that he was someone Jake could captain — exactly what Jake asked of him. Saving Jake’s life was a major influence in thawing Jake towards Bode joining CFD.

Bode is moving on to Phase 3 of fire training. Does anyone else wish we’d seen more of the fire training camp rather than fast-forwarding three weeks to when Bode is on his solo training with Station 42?

I wanted more time with Bode and Audrey to break Gabriela’s hold on him.

Alas, it looks like Bodiela (thanks to the Fanatic who corrected my ‘ship name typo) is a go again. Is it fair for Gabriela to keep toying with Bode, calling them off only to make a move on him in a moment of passion?

Gabriela leans on a medical bag
(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)

Where is the story going with them? Or is Gabriela just using a rendevous with Bode to distract herself from the intense elevator emergency and Manny’s close health scare?

Gabriela doesn’t seem to know what she wants from any of the relationships with the men in her life. She’s not just juggling indecisions about Bode but also Manny.

Eve’s plan to put the two of them in close quarters backfired. Manny got things off his chest. But Gabs still isn’t ready to mend fences.

Eve was in major mediator mode this week. After recently reopening old family wounds, her emotions ran rampant and influenced several of her decisions.

Seeing the Three Rock crew and how well Eve is starting to bond with them was great. At least we’ve got Cole for a little longer. It sucked getting attached to Freddy only to lose him after the entire season. However, his brief visit when Bode got out was a fun way to catch up.

Cole was best friends with Bode, but he’s now tied with Manny as Eve’s right hand. My favorite part of the episode might have been when Cole went missing, and Eve called him her favorite inmate.

Manny Perez ponders
(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)

Does that mean she likes him more than Manny? Or she doesn’t look at Manny as an inmate equal to his peers?

Eve went out of her way to get Cole a face-to-face reunion with his family after his health scare and his determination to make his weekly phone call.

It seems she’s willing to help other families repair their rifts, but she doesn’t want to be the one to initiate an olive branch to her family. Like Sharon said, she has to decide whether to be right or have her family.

After a long delay, we finally have a new mention of Sharon’s sister, Mickey Fox, who is set to have a series spinoff, Sheriff Country, in 2025.

Speaking of spinoffs, make sure you’re subscribed to TV Fanatic for the latest Fire Country spoilers, like news of the major guest appearance in Fire Country Season 3 Episode 5.

If you haven’t heard the news, Jared Padalecki will join Fire Country for three episodes as SoCal surfer firefighter Camden Casey.

(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)

He’ll be a match to Bode’s flame and possibly ruin Jake’s hard work trying to get Bode to control his lone wolf instincts. But as Jake told him, at least he’s no longer in charge of training Bode, so that’s the next instructor’s problem.

Let’s hear from you, Fire Country Fanatics.

What did you think of this episode?

Are you enjoying the storylines, or do you wish for something different? And is anyone else bummed that this episode didn’t include any actual firefighting? Or do you enjoy it when we see Station 42 handle first responder emergency calls that aren’t strictly fire-related?

Do you have any predictions for upcoming episodes of Fire Country Season 3?

Things are pretty hot in the Fire Country universe, and we’re not just talking about what’s left of Bodiela’s smoldering ashes.

Fire Country Season 3 Episode 4 spoilers will get your gears greased for the newest episode to fill your Friday night.

Fans hesitated about Fire Country Season 3 after the show experienced declining ratings during its second season. We wondered if the show’s first-season magic only worked because it was new.

Vince chats with a colleague
(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)

A shortened ten-episode season caused major issues for the budding show, but the CBS network approved the series for a third season anyway.

And as a Fire Country fanatic, this is one viewer who is uber-glad they took the risk!

Fire Country Season 3 returned like a flash fire, searing through its competition like a phoenix rising from the ashes. The action started with the first episode’s opening scene and hasn’t burnt out yet.

There is hope for the show, after all!

First, we might finally be free from the soap opera drama that the show forced us to endure throughout its second season.

From Gabriela breaking her engagement post-wedding ceremony because she was in love with Bode to her ending any chance of a relationship with him in Fire Country Season 3 Episode 3.

Gabriela and Manny chat
(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)

The baby daddy drama involving Jake and his adoptive daughter, Gene, also seems to be winding down. Hopefully.

We just found out Rick is the once-unknown father. Poor Bode.

Gene isn’t happy about that news, and she’s been shutting Jake out. We expect Fire Country Season 3 Episode 4 to push the story towards a resolution. It would be great to see Gene turn to Bode for advice.

Now that Bode doesn’t have prison or Gabriela to restrain him, he’ll need something to keep him grounded. The show made a big deal out of the emotional bond Bode felt towards G during the second season. Yet we haven’t seen him interact with her at all in the third season.

Being Uncle Bode might be the ticket to his redemption.

Especially once Camden Casey makes an impression on Bode’s reckless side in Fire Country Season 3 Episode 5.

(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)

Bode is already in hot water with Jake after his role in the near-death of a fellow firefighter in Fire Country Season 3 Episode 2. The incident itself was not the issue, but Bode stole a medical alert necklace to hide the crucial mistake.

Jake left it up to the victim to take the matter to the bosses, which would have ultimately resulted in Bode being kicked out of fire training and Gabriela being kicked out of the FD.

As we enter Fire Country Season 3 Episode 4, Bode is running on two strikes. One more mistake, and he’s out of fire training despite only being in the program for one training session.

I’m still unsure whether Jake overreacted to Bode using insider news to cheat the fire test. Technically, he wasn’t the one who decided to cheat. He just gave his partner the information and then followed her as she decided to use the cheat to their advantage.

Jake tutors Bode on firefighting
(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)

I’d love to hear your thoughts here, Fire Country Fanatics. I sway between liking and hating Jake with every episode. I don’t want to let my clouded feelings tarnish my perception.

Did Bode deserve to get kicked out of fire training for telling Audrey where to find the fire dummy? His grandfather gave him the tip — not necessarily an exact answer.

The latest promo shows a confrontation between Bode and Jake as they get ready to handle a trapped elevator emergency as the power shuts down due to intense heat overload.

A failing elevator holds Gabriela and Manny inside with bystanders.

With Bode already on thin ice, Jake demands that Bode leave behind his cowboy ways if he’s going to stay in the CFD.

That’s a nice hint at the upcoming guest star joining Fire Country. Jared Padalecki will have a three-episode arc that might lead to a spinoff.

While he’s a surfer SoCal boy in Fire Country, he formerly played cowboy Texas Ranger Cordell Walker in the reboot of Chuck Norris’s Walker, Texas Ranger, aptly named Walker.

Fire Country Season 3 Episode 3 gave us a deeper look at Vince’s tense relationship with his dad and shed a lot of light on Vince’s behaviors with Bode. The whole show is full of fire department family drama.

Will we see more of Pop Leone now that Vince and Sharon own Smokey’s? He seemed like a drinker.

At least Sharon got her job back. Where does that leave Luke?

This season, the family drama isn’t centered solely on the Leones, and I’m enjoying the dynamic. Since Manny was sentenced to time at Three Rock, he’s had a strained relationship with Gabriela.

(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)

Especially since he’s firmly against her having a relationship with Bode. However, it seemed like she finally agreed with him.

We hope that means she’ll come around and forgive Manny for going back to prison. She was so quick to love Bode despite his incarceration. Even when he was behind bars, instead of at Three Rock, she stood by his side.

Where’s that loyalty towards her idol?

It could be my old-school generational mindset, but I’m in full support of Manny’s brash actions, which led him to be the alpha inmate at Three Rock now that Bode’s on the outside.

Hey, we needed someone we love to be on a path of redemption; otherwise, we might struggle to connect with the prison camp this season.

Manny sits on a fire truck and holds his uniform
(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)

Eve’s running the place and finally finding her way. Having Manny as her right hand could lead her to massive professional growth. She’ll need his insights to lead her crew with compassionate authority.

Fire Country Season 3 Episode 3 also set up a fascinating backstory for Eve. After six long years away, Eve might finally go back home.

She and the prison inmate firefighters have been promoting goodwill around Edgewater, trying to build public relations and change opinions.

Given that her family is already angry that she chose firefighting over ranching, it’ll be fun to see how they react now that she’s a firefighter in charge of a camp of prison inmates she wants to bring onto ranch land for controlled burns.

Vince peeks through a window
(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)

There are plenty of stories Fire Country can pick up and run with now or that they put to the side and resume later in the full season. Hit us up in the comments, and let us know what storyline you hope Fire Country focuses on next.

Which character do you want to know more about? I’m excited about Eve.

The best way to find out what’s going to happen is to tune in live on Fridays at 9/8c on CBS or stream it the next day.

Fanatics have been geeking out about Jared Padalecki’s addition to the Fire Country family since the news broke (when).

We’ve finally got pictures and a storyline to fill in the blanks for what we know about Jared’s upcoming three-episode appearance as Camden Casey, a SoCal firefighter.

This is going to be good!

Jake and Camden on Fire Country
(Eric Milner/CBS)

Jared Padalecki is no stranger to playing the hero, whether fighting against evil in Supernatural or against injustice and bad guys in Walker.

Now, he’s on the journey of fighting fires as a Southern California surfer boy with a rebellious streak. The latest promo news released by Tia Napolitano warns fans that not everyone is going to like Camden Casey.

Camden will rub everyone the wrong way, including Bode, as he does his own thing.

It’ll be interesting to see how his maverick casualness interacts with Jake and the Leone golden pair’s more strict, by-the-book behaviors.

He’s going to be a wild card in the small town of Edgewater. While everyone else is worried about keeping Bode on a short leash, Camden wants to help Bode explore his talents, even if it means Bode going off-script from CFD protocols.

If we thought Bode was reckless within the constraints of prison, he could become dangerous now that he’s out and has a twin flame to spread his brazenness.

(Eric Milner/CBS)

Especially now that Gabriela has pumped the brakes on their relationship.

Again.

Camden’s multi-arc appearance will set up the potential third series in the Fire County universe, which will star Casey as the main character.

While currently being called Fire Country: Surf Side, the name has not been officially confirmed. Sheriff Country, the second Fire Country spinoff starring Morena Baccarin, is set to air in 2025.

Mickey Makes a Stand - Fire Country Season 2 Episode 6
(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)

Fire Country is the latest series to experience the awkward growth of trying to support a franchise.

The two spinoffs were planned before Fire Country could redeem itself after its sophomore season’s fiasco.

Given that the show is using several episodes to introduce viewers to Padalecki’s new character, we have to expect some charismatic bromancing between Jared and Max, especially given their real-life friendship.

The introduction for Sheriff Country’s main character lasted only one episode, and it left a lot to be desired.

At this point, it’s hard to judge what Sheriff Country will be about and whether it would be worth our time watching.

Hopefully, three episodes will be enough to gear us up for a full season of Camden Casey and his new southern California (we’re speculating) firefighting.

(Eric Milner/CBS)

Will there be a version of Three Rock in the spinoff? Inquiring minds want to know.

What do you think of Jared Padalecki joining Fire Country and getting his own Fire Country spinoff series? Do you believe Padalecki will play a convincing SoCal surfer dude with a penchant for risky firefighting?

Do you think Bode will get better or worse with the influence of someone who isn’t trying to restrain his behaviors? Do we want a free Bode or a Bode with a leash?

We’re deep in the journey to a full season of Fire Country Season 3, and the show is already redeeming itself from the flop of a second season.

This Fire Country Season 3 Episode 3 review breaks down my thoughts on what transpired during the episode.

And believe me, there is much to discuss!

(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)

So, let’s get down to business and talk about the messy magic in Fire Country Season 3 Episode 3, starting with Bode’s acceptance into the cult.

Sharon was dead on the nose when she likened belonging to the fire department to being in a cult. Both environments consume every moment of one’s life; participation gives you a rush, and not everyone understands your desire to join.

It’s hard for most of us to contemplate doing a job that comes with the daily risk of losing our lives, not to mention having other people’s lives depend on you.

Just look at the guilt Gabriela is feeling for her near-fatal mistake of giving her patient a life-saving drug that nearly killed him. She didn’t make it five seconds after Bode got into the room before she was spilling her guts.

However, if Bode feels bad for his part in the situation, he doesn’t show it.

Jake Confronts Bode and Gabriela
(Eike Schroter/CBS)

He seems unconcerned with his role in nearly killing a man due to negligence and then stealing the man’s medical alert necklace to cover up their mistake. It’s a dumb move leaving the necklace in your locker, bro.

Bode’s behavior rubbed Jake in all the wrong ways. But I get it. Bode loves to play hero, but he doesn’t like to be told he was wrong for his actions.

Show of hands: who loved seeing Jake go alpha-male when Bode tried to act like his actions weren’t a big deal? (Fans self giddily)

We thought Eve would have to find some alpha in her as well when it looked like the Three Rock crew would give Manny a hard time for being an inmate instead of the boss.

Eve in action as boss of Three Rock
(Eike Schroter/CBS)

I’ll admit, I watched that scene twice. Three Rock is what makes Fire Country stand out against all the other fire shows out there. And it just so happens to be where two of my three characters are Manny and Eve, so take me to camp and leave me there.

Does anyone else prefer more of a focus on Three Rock and its inhabitants?

It was fun seeing fire training camp, so I’m not too mad that we didn’t stay at camp the whole episode. School, camp, bullies, rule-breakers — boy, are we back in our childhoods?

Even the three strikes, you’re out rule at fire training was nostalgic. Then again, the World Series just ended after a crazy five-game run, so maybe I have baseball on the brain.

Jake was smart to pair up Bode and Audrey for fire training. Not because they’re both blonde ex-con cadets, but because of their competitive drive.

Jake takes time at fire training
(Eike Schroter/CBS)

It’s interesting news to hear that Audrey James isn’t a first-time fire cadet.

She’s on her third try, which might explain why she was so territorial about those limited spots in the training program.

While Bode wants to be a firefighter for the adrenaline rush, James is on a mission of redemption. She wants to replace the shame of being an inmate with the pride of being a firefighter.

If we were curious to know why Bode has entitlement issues, we must look no further than Silver Fox Grandpa Walter Leone.

(Eike Schroter/CBS)

He’s old-school firefighting, back when you’d do anything for family, regardless of legality or moral code. He thinks Bode should cash in on being a Leone.

I’m so glad to see that Bode wants to pass training on his own merit.

His family connections already got him into Phase 2 of training without completing Phase 1, ahead of other applicants waiting longer.

But just when it looked like Bode and James would get away with their last-second dummy rescue using insider knowledge, Jake’s suspicious mind noticed something odd.

Crud.

Was it alcohol or Leone entitlement that caused Pop Leone to run his mouth to Jake as he tried to do his job and question the cadets? And was he in the right to tell Bode where to find the dummy in the first place?

Vince's dad makes a scene during fire training
(Eike Schroter/CBS)

I say no. Just because he’s a Leone doesn’t mean he should get to cheat.

However, I don’t think his actions warrant the extreme punishment Jake dished out. A three-strike offense for one action? Immediate dismissal from training?

This is especially true since Bod didn’t do the cheating. He told James the information his grandfather had given him. And she took off into the fire, leaving Bode to follow her.

Damn, Bode’s hero complex, once again.

I’ve said time and again how we see massive nepotism in Fire Country, and we weren’t the only ones. Bode tried rationalizing James, calling him a nepo-baby by saying that firefighters breed firefighters.

And the legacy followers are nuggets.

Bode and Audrey talk
(Eike Schroter/CBS)

There are several examples of legacies; Bode and Gabriela are both nuggets. James called Bode a 24k nug. Okay, Bruno Mars.

And Vince is a nugget, too.

Maybe Eve and Jake could also classify since they are unofficial Leones and see Vince and Sharon as pseudo-parents.

Could Jake be going extra hard on Bode because he’s overcompensating for their family ship? Or is he lashing out because of the sucky predicament Bode and Gabs put him in with the necklace knowledge?

James may not be a firefighting legacy, but her time at prison camp corrected her moral compass. We got a deeper understanding of her past, and boy, she and Bode have a lot in common.

Audrey James as a fire cadet and former prison inmate
(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)

She took responsibility, which reversed Jake’s decision for Bode’s future. Now, he and James both have two strikes. But Jake left it up to Gil to decide if Bode had strike three or if he would get to continue with fire training.

It was kismet that Gabriela was stuck at Station 42 when the young nanny came in needing fire advice — and a nonjudgmental ear to confess her guilt.

The situation helped Gabriela decide to tell the truth about the necklace.

Who agrees with Jake’s decision to base Bode’s future in fire training on the patient’s reaction to Bode and Gab’s confession?

Jake talks to fire cadets
(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)

I think it was the right call.

Gil didn’t hold Gabriela and Bode responsible for their negligence, and Jake let the issue go without taking it to command. Bode is back in training camp.

But how will this affect Jake’s strained friendship with Bode and Gabriela?

Is anyone else super confused about what’s happening with the Bodelia relationship? I mean, besides Bode and Gabriela.

Just when we thought the couple were finally going to test the waters — after all, isn’t that why Gabriela didn’t marry Diego? — Gabriela slams on the brakes yet again.

At least she had a good reason this time.

Manny compared his marriage to Gab’s mom and Bode and Gabriela’s relationship on Fire Country Season 3 Episode 2 when he begged Sharon and Vince to keep the couple apart.

(Eike Schroter/CBS)

It seems that Gabriela is now making those same connections, but she’s not willing to follow in her parents’ footsteps. Yay!

Bode claims he can be boring. But once an addict, always an addict.

Only now, the rush of firefighting is his drug. And as Gabriela pointed out, also the chaos of their on-again, off-again relationship, which has been nothing but taking chances and breaking rules.

Go ahead and hate me if you want, but I’m rooting for a hook-up between the two ex-cons versus an out-of-prison relationship attempt from Bodela.

Tell me if you picked up on the chemistry between 24k and Jamesy. Ugh. Now, we need to get Bode on board.

Can someone tell me what’s up with this episode and daddy issues? Poor Vince is fighting with his dad. Gabriela is mad at hers, and Genevive is angry at Jake and her real father, Rick.

(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)

At least Vince and Bode have made up — for now.

As if things weren’t already tense enough between Vince and Walter, the kitchen fire and Walter’s angry outburst accelerated the slow burn into an inferno. Could the accident hint at a more sinister problem with Walter’s health?

We’ve seen Vince with his guitar in hand during the campaign fire in Fire Country Season 2 Episode 9. So, it’s great to hear that we might see more of his musical talents once he and Sharon reno the bar and re-install the stage.

Let’s hear your thoughts on Vince and Sharon becoming entrepreneurs.

Who thinks it’s a good idea for them to keep Smokey’s and re-open it? I’m all for it. However, it feels slightly like taking a page from the book of Chicago Fire.

Molly’s, anyone?

Despite that similarity, I’m all for them having the place. They need to invest their time and energy in something other than firefighting and parenting an adult son.

(Eike Schroter/CBS)

Finding out we’re about to see more of Eve’s past nearly had me jump out of my chair. Mentally. I’m too tired to physically. But it still counts!

I watch A LOT of TV, so it could have just gotten lost in the background — and please correct me if so! — but I don’t recall hearing much about Eve’s family or their ranch. But Fire Country Season 3 seems to be putting quite a focus on it.

Looks like Eve is going home.

Firefighting plus ranching — now that’s a spinoff idea I might be able to get behind. Alas, that’s not the theme for either of Fire Country’s two upcoming spinoffs – Sheriff Country and Fire Country: Surfside.

Does anyone else wonder if Sharon isn’t doing a bit of meddling by convincing Eve to talk to her family about using the ranch for the fire department’s controlled burns?

(Eike Schroter/CBS)

To learn later in the episode that Eve hasn’t talked to her family in six years. Wow. I could never. Will her personal insight make Manny change his mind about adding Gabriela to his visitor list at the camp?

Overall, everything is on track for an exciting and properly paced third season. And it’s just in time, given the less-than-stellar blemish that was Fire Country Season 2.

Let’s get a Fire Country Fanatic check in. Give us your thoughts in the comments.

How do you like the way things are progressing so far this season? Do you feel the show has done a good job wrapping up leftover cliffhangers from last season? And have they set the course for new plots to develop organically this season?

What has been your favorite part so far for Fire Country Season 3? And what was your top moment from Fire Country Season 3 Episode 3?

Should Bode have been kicked out of fire training for cheating?

We’re three episodes into the fall season of Fire Country, and things are already blazing hot.

Fire Country Season 3 Episode 3 spoilers will fan the flames of excitement into a raging inferno, leaving you burning for more.

Even though we’re three episodes into a new season, we’re still caught up in the disasters left behind in Fire Country Season 2. At least we finally have Gabriela’s answer for Diego.

(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)

The bride said no, although all of that happened off-camera. But the tension is stronger than ever between the love triangle of Gabriela, Bode, and Diego.

So, will we finally see Bodelia get their relationship off the ground?

Check-in Fanatics. Do you support the relationship between Bode and Gabriela? Or are you on the Manny train and want to see the two go their separate ways?

Speaking of getting things off the ground, Bode was accepted into Phase 2 of the fire training camp in Fire Country Season 3 Episode 2.

So, we expect to see him in cadet mode from now on.

The first two episodes of the third season immediately followed Fire Country Season 2 fiasco of a wedding and its symbolic but literal crasher — a celebratory helicopter.

We expect to see the third episode move ahead in time a bit, although it can’t jump too far. Jake has a suspicion, and he’s not the type to sit on that for long.

Fire Country Season 3 Episode 2 teased viewers with the tension of a shared secret between Gabriela and Bode. A secret that could cost both of them their careers.

They might have gotten away with a costly mistake with a sloppy fix.

If Jake hadn’t discovered the condemning evidence that Bode did nothing to conceal.

Jake takes time at fire training
(Eike Schroter/CBS)

Dude, you’re a convict. You got away with having a burner phone in prison. You know not to keep a stolen necklace in your work locker where it can be found easily.

A necklace that contradicts what you both put in your reports involving the treatment Gabriela provided for the patient injured after the helicopter explosion at the end of Fire Country Season 3 Episode 1.

Bode and Gabriela were having a hard enough time keeping their secret undiscovered after getting outed by CFD cadet Audrey James (Leven Rambin) during the up and down Bode presented for his application to fire training.

We sense some major tension — maybe competition — between James and Bode.

Sharon and Eve talk at the bar
(Eike Schroter/CBS)

This viewer wants to explore that relationship avenue more than a reunion with Bodelia. I have been there and seen that. Give us something new.

The promo for Fire Country Season 3 Episode 3 shows Jake confronting Bode and Gabriela. The logline hints that the couple’s decision to keep a massive secret is weighing on their conscience, and they’re considering confessing.

So is Jake’s confrontation going to be a blessing in disguise for the couple to clear their minds? Maybe Jake can help them find a way out of their tricky situation.

It will be interesting to see how the writers and Diane Farr — yes, Sharon Leone — handle Jake’s reaction. This episode will be Farr’s first time behind the director’s chair for the Fire Country series.

Jake could listen to their confession and decide to help them keep their secret. After all, if they tell the whole truth to the CFD, Gabriela could lose her job and never get to be a paramedic again.

Bode could also get rejected from the California Fire Department Training Program.

Bode is already dealing with an identity crisis as he tries to acclimate back to life outside of prison. Especially when being out means also being out of firefighting.

If he can’t be in the training program — especially after Luke and Sharon (who’s back to her old job) pulled strings — what is Bode’s purpose? It’s unlikely that his actions could land him back in prison.

At least Manny finally has his fate answered. He was sentenced to prison time, but he’ll serve it at Three Rock.

Vince sits with a friend
(Eike Schroter/CBS)

This gives us our Freaky Friday life swap — father of the bride is in prison while the bride’s ex-boyfriend is out of prison.

It will be interesting to see Manny as the inmate firefighter in the camp he used to run, having to follow orders from someone he once outranked who’s doing his old job.

How do you think he’ll get along with the inmates he once had to boss around?

Viewers might also learn more about Sharon and Vince’s newest life developments. They are now small business owners of a structurally damaged bar.

And they have a fixer-upper RV they’ll likely never have time to use. Could said RV play a role in Bode’s freedom journey?

(CBS/Screenshot)

We know we’ll be meeting a new character in the third season. So-Cal surfer boy Camden, played by Jared Padalecki, will be joining Fire Country as a recurring guest.

We don’t know where or when the firefighting duo will meet.

Given that he’s the subject of the third Fire Country spinoff, this new character will at least appear in more than one episode.

The show did not do as well at setting up Sheriff Country, the second spinoff, starring Sheriff Deputy Mickey Fox as Morena Baccarin.

Now that Fire Country — like our other favorite PrimeTime series — is back to its normal format of over 20 episodes, there is more room to properly set up the spinoffs.

So we hope to see a return of Mickey Fox on Fire Country ahead of her 2025 debut.

Vince and Sharon at the bar
(Eike Schroter/CBS)

Over to you, Fire Country Fanatics. Do you think there’s enough room in the Fire Country universe to support two new spinoffs, especially after the second-season slump the show went through?

What do you think should happen with the necklace Jake found that Bode and Gabs took off their patient to hide the fact that Gabriela administered a medication the patient was allergic to and nearly killed him?

How do you like the storyline of Vince and Sharon finding things to enjoy outside of the fire department, like their RV and Smokey’s bar?

Like any other character-based storytelling format, television is chock full of common tropes.

Sometimes, tropes are overdone or offensive, but they often exist to give the audience a sense of familiarity and relatability.

If I had to choose a favorite trope, it would be the concept of found family, and I wouldn’t even have to think about it.

Christopher Visits - 9-1-1 Season 6 Episode 11
(Jack Zeman/FOX)

A grouchy, tough boss has a soft spot for a rough-around-the-edge intern and becomes a parental figure for them.

A set of childhood best friends grow into adulthood together, sharing all of life’s challenges and celebrations like siblings.

Sometimes, a character gets the “Dirty Uncle Sal” treatment.

As Meredith Grey so eloquently put it on Grey’s Anatomy, this character is “the one who embarrasses everyone at family reunions … but you invite him to the picnic anyway.”

No matter how the relationship dynamic plays out, these platonic friendships that morph into families who do life together will always make me feel warm and fuzzy inside.

There are hundreds of examples of families found on television, but we’ve gathered a few that stand out for us to celebrate the trope.

Meredith Grey and Richard Webber: Grey’s Anatomy

Another Exam
(ABC)

The writers of TV’s longest-running medical drama could host a master class in the art of creating a found family.

Over the years, characters have built families with the coworkers they see constantly.

But one of the most realistic examples of chosen family on Grey’s Anatomy is in the daughter/father dynamic between Meredith and Richard.

The love hasn’t always been reciprocated, but Webber has considered himself responsible for Meredith since her first day as an intern.

Despite the ups and downs in their relationship (and I mean a LOT of them), these two have always been family.

We even saw a glimpse of what life might have been like if Richard had raised Meredith in Grey’s Anatomy Season 8 Episode 13.

Evan “Buck” Buckley and Christopher Diaz: 9-1-1

An Embrace - 9-1-1 Season 3 Episode 2
(Victor Ceballos/FOX)

9-1-1 is another show that doesn’t hold back when it comes to creating a family feel.

Perhaps the most meaningful example of this on the show is the relationship between Buck and Christopher.

Christopher isn’t biologically related to Buck; he’s the son of Buck’s closest friend and partner, Eddie.

But that has never stopped Buck from loving Christopher like his own and stepping in as a parental figure when needed.

In a testament to their bond, Eddie named Buck in his will as Christopher’s legal guardian in the event of Eddie’s death.

Christopher trusts Buck even when he can’t talk to his dad, and Buck has proven time and time again that he’s worthy of that trust.

April Ludgate and Leslie Knope: Parks and Recreation

The Trash Ladies
(Colleen Hayes/NBC)

April may have a snarky attitude and pretend she’s too cool for school, but the love she has for Leslie shines through on Parks and Recreation.

Leslie isn’t old enough to be April’s mother, but she’s certainly acted in a big sister capacity over the years.

As April’s boss, Leslie always did a great job of supporting her professionally.

More importantly, she showed up for April outside of work, supporting her through years of major life changes.

No matter how hard April tried to feign otherwise, she loved and appreciated Leslie’s advice and support and frequently sought it out.

Leslie’s influence is directly responsible for much of April’s growth, and April shows her gratitude in her own way.

Rosa Diaz and Jake Peralta: Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Rosa and Jake - Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 6 Episode 14
(John P. Fleenor/NBC)

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is another one of those shows where everyone feels connected to each other in a familial way.

Jake even slips up more than once and calls Captain Holt “Dad,” if that tells you anything about their relationship.

But one of the most special duos on this show is Jake and Rosa, best friends who act more like siblings.

They bicker and fight, but they always have each other’s backs at work and in their personal lives.

When Rosa came out as bisexual, Jake stood by her side as she navigated coming out to her parents, who were less than supportive.

And for her part, Rosa showed up for Jake to back him up in his many, many shenanigans, often getting him out of messes he created himself.

Stella Kidd and Wallace Boden: Chicago Fire

Boden Listens to Kidd - Chicago Fire Season 12 Episode 3
(Adrian S Burrows Sr/NBC)

Found family in a firehouse is almost a given, so this may be too easy.

Still, no one was more devastated about Chief Boden’s departure from 51 than Stella.

She viewed him as a father figure who was always available for advice and encouragement.

Boden saw Stella as a daughter and would have done anything she needed at any time.

The bond these two shared was just one of many examples of beautiful platonic friendships on Chicago Fire.

Through good times and bad, Boden and Stella set a fantastic example of how powerful chosen family can be.

Billy Baker and Spencer James: All American

Coaching Spencer - All American Season 1 Episode 13
(Erik Voake/The CW)

Billy Baker treated Spencer as another son from the minute he moved him into his house so he could be a star player on the Beverly football team.

While it was originally about the team and Spencer’s potential, they grew to care deeply about each other over the years.

When Billy died during All American Season 5, it devastated Spencer because they had been arguing and had not made peace yet.

When Billy makes a ghostly visit in Season 6, he tries to help all his children, including Spencer.

Amanda Breaks Down - Will Trent
Amanda breaks down when the threats become worse. (Disney/Daniel Delgado Jr.)

Amanda appears as a tough old bird, but she has always considered Will to be part of her family.

At the end of Will Trent Season 1, it was revealed that she found baby Will in the trash can and tried to raise him herself.

However, society didn’t let single African-American women keep infants, and she had to give him back, but she gave him a part of her, his name.

She also gave him a job at the GBI, and Will was always loyal to her.

They have such a strong dynamic, and you can tell there’s a lot of history there that the series hasn’t even begun to dig into.

Vince Leone and Jake Crawford: Fire Country

Jake and Vince Leone share a tense conversation - Fire Country Season 2 Episode 7
(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)

Vince Leone always reads as very paternal when it comes to both Jake and Eve on Fire Country.

He considered both of them his other children, and that especially was solidified when his and Sharon’s daughter died, and Bode went to prison.

In work environments, there is a healthy dose of respect, but you also get the sense that Vince is the dad of the house.

Just as quickly as he extends advice to both Jake and Eve, they also confront him in a way you’d expect from children calling out their parents.

Melinda “Mel” Monroe and Vernon “Doc” Mullins: Virgin River

Doc and Mel Fish - Virgin River Season 5 Episode 8
(COURTESY OF NETFLIX)

Funnily enough, when Mel first got there, Doc seemed to hate her and didn’t want her around at all.

But they eventually settled into a beautiful rhythm and developed this very special filial relationship, which is almost as much at the center of the show as her romance with Jack.

Doc never had the opportunity to raise children, but you can tell he pours all of this fatherly affection and love into Mel. As for Mel, she returns his affection in kind.

The two share a bond that includes confiding in each other, seeking out advice, holding secrets, and comforting each other.

In fact, the upcoming season of Virgin River will be interesting as Mel explores a relationship with her biological father.

Because she and Doc have been so close for the past few years, it makes you wonder if he’ll feel a pang of jealousy or resentment.

Susannah Fisher and Isabel “Belly” Conklin: The Summer I Turned

Resting with Susannah - The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 2 Episode 8
(Erica Doss/Amazon)

Pretty

Sadly, this mother-daughter dynamic on The Summer I Turned Pretty ended in tragedy.

But Belly looked to Susannah as a second mother and, at times, had a stronger relationship with Susannah than she did with her own mom.

And Susannah, given that she only had two sons, always viewed Belly as her daughter.

It made things interesting since Susannah actively rooted for Belly to be with one of her sons; her opinion on this matter adds weight to the already complicated and messy love triangle between Belly and the two brothers.

Still, Belly and Susannah sometimes felt more like mother and daughter than she did with her actual mom.

As a result, Belly’s grief over Susannah’s passing has fundamentally shaped who she is as a young woman moving forward and made her grief story carry just as much weight as that of Conrad and Jeremiah’s.

Fire Country is back on the right path with its junior season, from the action to the soundtrack. Not to mention some rule-breaking from Gabriela and Bode.

This Fire Country Season 3 Episode 2 review breaks down the good, bad, and WTF that happened during our favorite small-town firefighting show.

Once you’ve read my opinions, share your thoughts. I love it when someone notices something I didn’t. We’re all human, right?

Is Manny’s Future Bright?

If we thought Manny would get it easy after Luke went to bat with him against the cops on Fire Country Season 3 Episode 1, our hopes have been dashed. Man, those cops are rude!

Fire Country likes to play with our feelings.

When the episode started, we had high hopes for Manny’s future. It looked like the judge was going to be forgiving, giving Manny a long probation but no jail time for his (justifiable) assault with probation.

The incident seemed to open old wounds for Gabriela, and she didn’t hold back from telling Manny how she felt about his brash behaviors.

Their candid talk about the past allowed Manny to call Gabriela out for her last-minute decision not to go through with her wedding. I’m with Manny on this. Diego did not deserve that embarrassment.

Not when he offered to delay the wedding until Gabriela could figure her crap out. But she turned him down and wanted to go through with it.

(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)

Only to say I don’t instead of her vows. In front of a church packed with spectators, including people they worked with daily. How humiliating for Diego!

It was cold-hearted and cruel.

But later in the episode, we got a massive curveball when we were fully involved in Bode’s fire squad presentation and a rehash of the helicopter crash incident.

Three years in prison if Manny pleads guilty. Or he could take his chances at trial.

Most of us saw that coming. This viewer has been predicting (maybe wishfully thinking) that Manny would do his time at Three Rock. It’s a bit of a role reversal with Bode.

Bode looks at something next to him
(Eric Milner/CBS)

Unfortunately, the DA didn’t seem willing to play ball. WTFH.

At first, Vince thought Manny should take his chances on trial. But then he had a better plan. A massive group of CFD members congregated to confront the DA about letting politics play a role in his punishment decision, except Gabriela.

And just like that, we’re celebrating with another congratulatory cake.

This show has a sweet tooth when it celebrates good news. I mean, Manny getting sent back to prison isn’t good news, but I am dancing a jig that I called it.

Manny will do 12 months of a hard time, and all had served at the Three Rock Prison Camp. Who knew we’d be seeing Freaky Friday on a fire show? At least they stayed in their own bodies, if not their own lives.

Do you agree with Manny that getting sentenced to Three Rock is not the same as going to prison?

Manny stares apprehensively
(CBS/Screenshot)

Three Rock is Back, Baby

Most of us Fire Country Fanatics threw a major fit when we didn’t see our beloved redemption crew helping with any of the episodes’ emergencies. Rest easy, soldiers. FC heard, and they have repented.

Three Rock had several prominent moments in the episode, keeping us firmly tied to the prison camp without being on campus. We even discovered that Three Rock had been on the emergency scene during the season premiere.

They just didn’t show them in action. How rude!

The show made up for it with flashback scenes in the second episode, showing where Three Rock was while everything else was happening, and giving us plenty of them in action with Eve in command.

Eve struggles to move a pillar
(Eric Milner/CBS)

Eve has grown into her leadership position with the inmate crew, and I’m starting to love the dynamic. It’s already a massive improvement from Fire Country Season 2.

But she can’t catch a break.

Just as she finds her footing as a leader and gains her crew’s respect, a rude landowner interferes with that. The neighbor is a piece of work about her bushes.

I don’t wish ill will on anyone, but let that lady’s house catch fire and make her eat crow when Eve saves her.

Although Eve’s action plan might work even better, making the neighborhood force the wicked witch to maintain her property to prevent out-of-control fires.

While the rude neighbor was a PITA, she revealed some new information about Eve’s background. Her threat of calling the Sheriff’s Department might hint at another guest visit from Mickey Fox, Sharon’s sister, whom we met in Fire Country Season 2 Episode 6.

Watching it Burn - Fire Country Season 2 Episode 6
(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)

Seeing more about Eve’s life outside the fire department would be great.

And we really need to see more of Deputy Fox before she gets her own spinoff, Sheriff Country, coming in 2025.

First Look at the Firing Squad and a New Ex-Con Firefighter

Those who read our Fire Country Season 3 Episode 2 spoilers knew Fire Country Season 3 Episode 2 would revolve around fire training. We speculated on whether Bode would get in — and, if he did — what it would cost those around him.

Well, it looks like he did, and from how Eve and Jake sounded, it might be thanks to a lot of nepotism and pulled strings.

Given that Jake is teaching the class, we have to wonder if there will be some growing pains. We already know how Bode is when it comes to taking orders.

Audrey James as a fire cadet and former prison inmate
(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)

Jake will have his hands doubly full now that he’s got the female version of Bode to teach, too. We have to wonder what he did to piss off the heavenly powers that be to give him two obstinate, cocky, selfish ex-cons turned firefighters.

Two words for you, buddy. Sage smudge.

The new girl has a serious attitude. I hope she checks it before she gets brash with the wrong person. I could totally see Sharon or Eve tearing into her.

Ugh, that cockiness. It’s Fire Country Season 1 Bode all over again.

Show of hands — how many people loved seeing Jake as the instructor? He’s a natural.

Jake talks to fire cadets
(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)

I’d also like to know everyone’s thoughts on Bode’s entrance exam to the fire training program.

Is it fair that Bode gets a different Phase 1 test than the other candidates?

Bode’s presentation for the firing squad did not go as smoothly as we’d hoped. He’s new to the rules of emergency response, which didn’t go over well with the head of the Edgewater fire training program.

The new ex-con turned firefighter certainly doesn’t think Bode has the right to be in Phase 2.

It’s a tricky situation. He’s already had actual hands-on training fighting fires, like James. But she still has to go through the entire program, while Bode gets to test ahead of everyone else? Hmmm.

(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)

When presenting his case, Bode made a massive error, which ex-con James noticed immediately. Both Jake and the training program boss seemed satisfied.

Until the Q and A.

Gabs was worried Jake would be able to tell when Bode was lying or holding back. But they should have been more concerned about the female version of Bode instead.

James will be a major game-changer this season, keeping Bode on his toes. Could we finally be seeing more of the female side of the prison inmate firefighters? We got a taste during Fire Country Season 1.

But the shortened Fire Country Season 2 focused solely on the men’s Three Rock prison camp.

After Bode presented his case and Gabriela covered for him, Jake had one thing to say to him. “You’re in.”

(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)

What Did the Firefighters Say?

During the chaos of Fire Country Season 3 Episode 1, Gabriela horrifyingly admitted she made a mistake in treating the injured helicopter pilot.

We never found out what it was, and it seemed like the issue would dissipate in the air, much like several of Fire Country’s exaggerated plot lines.

Until Bode found out he’s the guy in front of the firing squad.

He’ll only pass his test and move to Phase 2 of the training program by presenting the helicopter crash rescue to Jake, the trainees, and the big boss.

While that seems like nothing, it becomes a problem when Jake advises Bode that he won’t get accepted if he scores too low. Bode could lose points by not mentioning something or admitting mistakes.

Gabriela and Bode handle a helicopter explosion
(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)

Dun-dun-duh.

Check out our Fire Country Season 3 Episode 3 spoilers to learn more about the massive secret Bode and Gabriela are withholding.

Bode is willing to keep crucial information that should have gone into the report to himself to protect Gabriela. Even if it means he could get caught or lose his chance at getting into fire training.

Damn that hero persona.

While James tried to make Bode look bad, she may not have known about Bode and Gabriela’s background.

Gabriela and Bode talk in their fire turnouts
(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)

There was no way Gabriela would let Bode get into trouble for her actions. But as Gabriela said, when she presented the facts that shut James down, the information wasn’t in the report, so it wasn’t for Bode to disclose during the up and down.

The argument James thought would prove Bode was a bad firefighter made both Bode and Gabriela look good to the IC.

Take that, Blondie!

Parental Challenges with Adult Children

I love how Fire Country shows the struggles of parenting.

Especially when it comes to adult children. It’s hard to turn off trying to fix everything for them. Sharon is doing a good job of trying to be hands-off, but it will take more for Vince to be able to step back.

Vince leans down for a closer look
(Eric Milner/CBS)

Vince finds himself paternally protective of not only Bode — a grown man of 31 — but also Jake and Eve.

The trio has been tight for years, and they’ve spent plenty of time in the Leone house to classify as his, not to mention the time they’ve spent with Vince in the firehouse, adding to Vince’s protectiveness.

It’s no wonder Jake and Bode find themselves overly protective of those in their orbit.

This episode focused a lot on everyone’s futures, from Bode getting into fire training to Sharon and Vince trying to figure out how to enjoy life without involving parenting or fighting fires.

Have I mentioned in this review how much I love Sharon? If you’ve read any of my previous reviews, you know I say it quite a bit.

I am happy to announce that Sharon still secured her job back from Luke despite getting Luke to pull strings to get Bode into fire training.

Sharon tries to offer emergency help
(Eric Milner/CBS)

How adorable that Sharon bought Smokey’s because she knew losing it to a corporate vegan restaurant would upset Vince. And he bought a fixer-upper AirStream to fulfill Sharon’s dreams of traveling.

Fire Country Season 3 Episode 2 Review Final Thoughts

My favorite part of the episode was the impromptu karaoke concert in Leone’s living room. I never thought I’d see Bode Leone (or Max Thieriot) dancing and singing.

Hootie, my man! You made it to TV! Sorry folks, you might know him as Darius Rucker.

I nearly wanted to take away half the positive ratings I gave the show when I saw the butcher job Bode did to his hair. Those gorgeous blonde locks are no more and this FC fan is distraught with mourning.

And that mustache? No, Bode, no! This isn’t the ’70s, and you aren’t Ron Jeremy.

We found out Gabriela gave Diego his ring back. The couple is officially over. Drat.

(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)

That means we might be in store for more Bodiela drama now that Gabs is single and Bode is out of prison. What’s to stop their relationship anymore?

Well, besides Manny’s adamant disapproval of the union. It sucked seeing the episode end with those two still at odds. They’ve had a close relationship after Manny went straight. But his going back to prison is putting a major strain on things.

But we hopefully have a full season with over 20 episodes to explore the dynamic, and it’s nice to see some family drama that isn’t centered on the Leones.

Head to our comments and tell us how you liked Fire Country Season 3 Episode 2.

What was your favorite part of the episode? What was the worst part?

How will the medical alert necklace storyline unfold? He and Gabriela thought they were in the clear by taking it. But Bode never got rid of it. And now Jake has found it. Ah snap, Fire Country Season 3 Episode 3 will be spicy.

Finally, how do you feel about the Rick storyline, which the episode managed to sneak in on the final moments of the show? Is he Gene’s father? And should she know?

If you’re a fan of broadcast TV dramas (and you know we are, here at TV Fanatic!), then you’re probably aware that the major networks are all about first responders these days.

A quick scan of the year’s top dramas turns up more cops and firefighters than a charity softball game in Central Park.

Throw in doctors, lawyers, lifeguards, and folks with first responder-adjacent jobs (a la Tracker’s Colter Shaw or High Potential‘s Morgan Gillroy), and pretty much every drama on network television is covered.

Chim prepares himself for a rescue during 9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 4.
(Disney/Christopher Willard )

Obviously, TV’s fascination with cops, firefighters, FBI agents, etc. is nothing new.

After all, those people have very interesting jobs, which makes it easy for writers to come up with weekly adventures to enthrall audiences.

And if you’re looking for a hero in 2024, you could do a lot worse than the people who come to the rescue during emergency situations.

That might be especially true when said hero has a checkered past.

Need a redemption arc than can be completed over the course of an hour (44 minutes with commercials)?

Vince Leone Communicates - Fire Country Season 2 Episode 3
(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)

Just have an inmate who’s been convicted of a violent crime save someone’s life by pulling them from a burning building.

It’s a scenario that’s played out several times on Fire Country, and we’re not knocking it in any way. It’s succinct and powerful, and in the age of TikTok-ified attention spans that’s a hell of a combination.

In fact, it’s important for us to note that we’re not dismissing these shows or the brave men and women they depict.

But interestingly, it wasn’t all that long ago that a list of TV’s top shows would’ve also contained oddball entries like Lost, Twin Peaks, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, This Is Us, Parenthood, Gilmore Girls, and the like.

Even The X-Files, while it obviously centered on two FBI agents, was more concerned with matters otherworldly than procedural. And it was a massive hit across every major demo.

Cracking A Case - The X-Files
(Fox)

So what happened?

Why is it that at some point over the past 10 years, the major networks seemingly lost all interest in shows that don’t revolve around the people who show up when you dial 911?

Well, the situation might speak to the current political tensions in America these days.

In case you’ve been living under a rock in a cave on Mars these past few years, we have some sad news to deliver — the US has become pretty divided.

As in “people who are stockpiling canned goods might have the right idea”-level divided.

Jamie and Joe Share a Beat - Blue Bloods Season 14 Episode 9
(CBS / 2023 CBS Broadcasting )

This split is most evident in our politics, but there are signs of it in our pop culture as well.

And it seems that conservatives got custody of broadcast TV in the national divorce. That said, liberals have not been left with an empty nest.

After all, it’s not as if more eccentric, provocative shows aren’t being produced anymore.

A look at the year’s top streaming and premium cable shows reveals a wide array of bold premises on shows like Baby Reindeer, The Penguin, Bridgerton, Only Murders In the Building, etc.

But it’s younger people and more affluent households that are most likely to subscribe to multiple streaming services.

(Ed Miller/Netflix)

Those demographics also tend to be more left-leaning in their politics, which might help to explain why they’re more interested in Scottish comedians and steamy Regency romances than the procedurals that remain popular with older audiences.

Obviously, there’s nothing new about generation and income gaps having an impact on viewing habits.

But the divide is wider than ever these days, as evidenced by a recent Bill Maher monologue in which the comedian joked about never having heard of CBS’ Tracker.

His studio audience — which was likely an affluent, coastal crowd — seemed to agree with his befuddlement at the fact that it’s TV’s most-watched show.

It was a small moment that spoke volumes about the state of television in 2024.

Colter steps into a new case during Tracker Season 2 Episode 1.
(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)

Interestingly, the broadcast sitcom is almost completely dead these days, possibly as a result of the fact that Americans can no longer agree on what’s funny.

Seinfeld and Home Improvement were the top two sitcoms of the 1990s, and they both drew such huge audiences that it’s safe to say their audiences overlapped considerably.

Nowadays, a single, Manhattan-based standup comic and a Midwestern, power-tool-obsessed family man would appeal to very different demographics.

But 30 years ago, a wide swath of the American public was able to appreciate the comedic potential in both scenarios.

Maybe the Tim and Jerry Divide tells us everything that we need to know about the division at the center of American cultural life in 2024.

Or maybe we’re just overthinking TV trends again. That’s sort of what we do here.

Anyway! Over to you TV fanatics!

Do you think modern broadcast television schedules can tell us anything about the US political climate?

Fire Country Season 3 Episode 2 Spoilers

When Fire Country Season 2 ended on a major cliffhanger, fans spent months in agony as we waited to find out if Gabriela said “I do” or “I don’t” to Diego.

If fans hoped we’d have the answer when Fire Country Season 3 returned, we were sadly — and frustratingly — mistaken. Fire Country Season 3 Episode 1 ended on a massive cliffhanger.

Before Gabriela could say her vows, a major crisis occurred.

Instead of Bode crashing her wedding, it was a helicopter, ironically towing a Congrats Diego and Gabriela banner.

Although Gabriela did a good deal of delaying the wedding herself with her awkward moment of silence instead of the excited “I do” expected of a giddy bride rushing to marry the man of her dreams.

As the Fire County Season 3 premiere came to an end, fans had four distinct plotlines still left unresolved. Let’s look at how these cliffhangers could get resolved in Fire Country Season 3 Episode 2.

What Will the Bride Say?

The Bode-Gabriela-Diego love triangle dominated the shortened second season of Fire Country, bordering close to soap opera territory.

Some fans got tired of Gabs and Bode’s “Will they” or “Won’t they” nonsense. This writer falls into the “it’s over, move on” category. I’m ready for fresh drama. Not a continuing storyline from the first season.

Fire Country seems to fall into the habit of creating drawn-out storylines that they eventually abandon without reason. The Bodela relationship being one of them, along with Bode’s prison sentence.

(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)

Just when we thought things would find a new sense of normalcy now that Bode’s out of prison and Gabriela is marrying Diego, a monkey wrench damaged the cogs.

Bode planned to do the right thing and walk away.

But Gabriela made it extremely difficult by asking him why he left her wedding. But how weird was it that he was even there in the first place? She’s getting married. The last thing she should care about was the absence of her ex during the ceremony.

Can I get your thoughts here, folks?

Was it appropriate for Gabby to ask those questions of Bode when she was supposed to marry Diego? What do you think Gabriela was going to say to Diego before the helicopter crashed?

Yay or nay?

(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)

Gabriela might have given Diego her answer as she, he, and Bode worked to rescue the trapped, injured pilot. She admitted the kiss during the campaign fire.

Is Gabs leaving Diego for Bode?

Could the explosion that ended the Fire Country’s third season premiere be symbolic of Gabriela and Diego’s relationship going up in flames?

Manny Will Be Behind Bars Soon

When the second season ended after a delayed too-short season, Manny was sitting with his hands cuffed behind his back in a police car.

He self-surrendered after giving us the scare of a lifetime when we saw him walking away on a solo mission over 100 miles from Edgewater after learning he had an arrest warrant out for him.

Thankfully, he came back in time to walk Gabriela down the aisle.

Gabriela uses her hand-held radio
(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)

Stupid Luke.

When Fire Country returned with its third season, Manny’s situation was worse. Now, he was locked in the back of a cop car with two injured, unconscious police officers. Thank God Sharon came to the rescue.

Would you have uncuffed Manny so he could offer aid? Or would you have stuck to the law and kept him cuffed? I’m with Sharon.

Like Manny said, he’s a firefighter, first and foremost.

It was nice seeing Luke support Manny once some angry cops showed up to take him into custody. Their hostility was unnecessary and ruffled this Manny-lover’s feathers. He helped save their colleagues’ lives.

(CBS/Screenshot)

Show some dang respect.

We’re still speculating on what Fire Country Season 3 looks like for Manny after his incident with Luke. Could he become the newest resident at Three Rock Prison Camp?

Speaking of Three Rock, it was unfortunate that we didn’t see them respond to the multiple emergencies. It’s been a common complaint that we don’t see enough of the camp and its inmates. We hope that changes in this season.

Manny believes he’s a goner, so he’s tried to enlist Sharon and Vince to keep Bode and Gabriela apart. While Sharon and Vince don’t see an issue with their relationship, Manny sees the same obsessive desperation he had with his wife.

Gabriela's mother is at the ball. - Fire Country Season 2 Episode 8
(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)

We admit there are similarities. Overall, their entire relationship has been unhealthy.

Will Bode Join the CFD Training Program?

Fire Country Season 3 has more room to focus on character development than the uber-short previous season.

So it’s not surprising that we instantly picked up with Bode back on his heroic, entitled spiral as he sought a way to feed his newest addiction — firefighting. He even tried to make a deal with the devil himself.

Bode looks at something next to him
(Eric Milner/CBS)

Yes, we’re talking about Luke.

You know your boy is desperate for a fix when he goes to the very uncle who already betrayed him for help.

Luke was okay with Bode returning to prison for the rest of his sentence if the prison fire camp closed like Luke wanted. So, why would Bode think Luke would do anything to get him into the actual fire department?

Given Bode’s disregard for the chain of command and his reckless abandonment of his own life, is firefighting the right fit for him?

Is Bode really a legacy hero firefighter prodigy like his mom, dad, uncle, grandfather, best friends, and even his ex? Or is he a junkie looking for a legal, non-drug method of getting high?

Gabriela and Bode talk in their fire turnouts
(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)

Would Bode have enough self-control to make it through fire training without making a bad impression or stepping on his superiors’ toes?

Could he pass a psych exam?

I mean, would that even matter? It didn’t for Gibbs when he started with NCIS. By the way, who else is loving the NCIS: Origins show?

In Fire Country Season 3 Episode 2, we’ll learn more about the fire training program and meet a new character. Audrey James (Leven Rambin) is a former camp inmate turned training cadet.

(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)

What is Sharon’s Future?

Sharon Leone is a natural mother bear. She protects and supports anyone in her orbit, whether they’re blood or not.

It’s no surprise that she’s advocating so hard for Bode to become an official member of the North California Fire Department division. Why wouldn’t she want to continue working closely with her kid?

Not to mention how easy it would be to keep an eye on him and run interference if he was f’ing up.

Sharon tries to offer emergency help
(Eric Milner/CBS)

But for her to be willing to seek help from Luke is mind-numbingly frustrating.

Not that she decided to try convincing him to pull strings to get Bode into a program with an extensive year waitlist of candidates far more qualified.

As a mother, I can’t say I wouldn’t do the same in her shoes.

And this show has zero problems with nepotism. Perhaps that’s the great thing about TV. We can watch blatant rule-breaking and support it because we know it’s not real. In real life, we’d be demanding lawsuits and resignations.

This viewer wouldn’t half mind seeing a resignation by Luke Leone. Or I could settle for a major demotion.

Speaking of his current title, does anyone else fear that Sharon’s attempts to get him to help out Bode will come with some strings attached? If I were in Luke’s position, I’d use Sharon’s former position as leverage.

(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)

If he tries to help Bode get into fire training, Sharon will change her mind about taking back her Battalion Chief role, which Luke now holds.

The Baby Daddy Drama Continues

It could just be my way of thinking, but Fire Country certainly seems to have it out for all the females in Bode’s orbit.

From his sister to Cara to Gabriela to Genevieve, Bode doesn’t seem to be able to keep a female in his life for long. Even his mother stopped wanting anything to do with him for a short time.

We’ve been engulfed in the baby daddy drama since Jake and Cara started dating. I don’t know who’s had it harder — Jake, Bode, or Gene.

Jake talks to fire cadets
(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)

It seems like Jake and Bode both end up caring for the same female, only for that female to meet her demise. We hope that isn’t a prediction for Gabriela’s eventual future.

While both Jake and Bode lost Cara, at least Jake ended up with Gen. Although that wasn’t the original plan.

Does anyone think it’s wrong that Jake is ignoring Cara’s wishes about her daughter?

Yeah, Jake has a relationship with Genevieve. But even though he was engaged to Cara, she still asked Bode to raise her child. So, is it okay that Jake decided he was going to adopt her instead?

Jake embraces Gene in relief
(Eric Milner/CBS)

That doesn’t seem to be what Cara wanted. Even if it is what Genevieve wants.

Just as everyone was getting accustomed to Jake being Gene’s parental figure, a major plot twist occurred.

Bode’s new boss, Rick — the guy responsible for getting Bode hooked on drugs in high school — is in town to find out if he’s the father to Cara’s orphaned daughter. And maybe take her home with him.

People can change, and the show did a good job of setting up Rick’s redemption story, setting the stage for him to show that he’s in recovery and a good father.

Funny how the universe has a way of setting things in motion. After parts of the helicopter crashed into Smokey’s, Gen found herself trapped with Rick. They bonded during the entrapment, and Rick learned that she was Cara’s daughter, not Jake’s as he’d claimed.

Rick felt an instant paternal instinct towards Genevieve, even before he found out who she was. So it’s unsurprising that he told Jake he wanted a DNA test.

Eve tries to provide comfort to Jake
(Eric Milner/CBS)

Is Jake acting in Gen’s best interests by not wanting anyone else to have her, even her biological dad? We could tell he loved her by how out of his mind he was while she was stuck and hurt.

But if Rick is her father and she has siblings, wouldn’t it be selfish not to let her have that life? What do you think Jake should do?

Maybe he and Rick could work out a joint custody schedule.

Who’s Excited for Fire Country Season 3 Episode 2?

After last season’s flop, this viewer was skeptical of Fire Country Season 3. Especially since they’re already expanding the universe to include two spinoffs.

So, I had guarded hopes of seeing Fire Country return to the firefighting glory of the first season, with awesome fire crisis calls and less soap opera drama. We got more than enough of that with the too-stuffed ten-episode second season.

Gabriela in her firefighting jacket
(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)

Fire Country Season 3 Episode 1 had a nice tempo pace, with exciting emergencies and an adequate amount of tying up Fire Country Season 2 loose ends.

And it set the scene for Fire Country Season 3 Episode 2 perfectly.
