Rock of Cashel. The ancient buildings rise from the
rocky foundation of Cashel, overlooking the beautiful plains of the Golden Vale.
In the 4th and 5th century Cashel was the capital of the kingdom of the Eoghanacht,
descendants of the hero Eoghan. One of the relatives, Conall Corc built the
first fortress here. Brian Boru was crowned king here in the 10th century and
it remained the seat of the kings of Munster until 1101 when King Murtagh O'Brien
gave the Rock to the Church. |
